The Most Serene Republic
$19.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed

Out of the serenity of Milton, Ontario returns their most ambitious export, the young sextet known as The Most Serene Republic. Their third full-length, ...And The Ever Expanding Universe is produced by Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Super Furry Animals, Los Campesinos!) and it shows the band confidently striding forward with a more mature, diverse and exhilarating sound.
With two acclaimed albums and an EP already under their belts, these just now 24-year old musicians have already been performing together for a half-dozen years. Very much a product of their wide ranging personalities, the band is led by Ryan Lenssen’s classical piano and obsession with musical history, and singer/lyricist Adrian Jewett’s Joycian stream-of-conscious lyrics and larger then life stage personality. The entire band’s excellence with their instruments is undeniable and is proven both live and on album.

Aim And Ignite is the highly anticipated Nettwerk Music Group debut from Fun. Produced by Redd Kross' Steven McDonald, the debut offers a stunning array of musical diversity from three extraordinary musicians; former front man of The Format Nate Ruess; ex-Anathallo multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost; and Steel Train's Jack Antonoff. When combined, they create an irresistible album that rethinks classic 70s pop, where ornate arrangements and inspired orchestrations meet present-day rock 'n' roll.
From the album opener "Be Calm" which melds finely wrought chamber-pop orchestrations with guitar-fueled rock 'n' roll, to the richly intricate melodic twists and turns of "All The Pretty Girls," to the brash and brassy blue-eyed soul of "Barlights" and the Randy Newman-esque "Light A Roman Candle With Me," Aim And Ignite is an irresistible collection of freewheeling pop songcraft full of passion, imagination and creative vigor.

Production notes:
Clarity Vinyl represents the ultimate in vinyl formulations because it is comprised of over 90% percentage of the highest quality co-polymer available - a key component in vinyl pellets used for manufacturing vinyl records. Further, Clarity Vinyl has no carbon black additive, common in vinyl formulas for LP’s. Carbon Black contains trace metals that become magnetized and cause “electrical distortions” in cartridges during playback that smears the sound. By taking out the Carbon Black, Classic Records is able to dramatically reduce the “electrical distortions” and thus bring more “Clarity” to the playback process, providing a more realistic musical experience to the listener and LP enthusiast.

"Come Away With Me has never sounded better!" - Michael Fremer
2003 Grammy Award Winner for Best New Artitst, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Pop Vocal Album, Song of the Year ("Don't Know Why") and Female Pop Vocal Performance ("Don't Know Why"). Also earned Best Engineered Album and Producer of the Year honors for Arif Mardin.
Norah Jones' debut on Blue Note is a mellow, acoustic pop affair with soul and country overtones, immaculately produced by the great Arif Mardin. Jones is not quite a jazz singer, but she is joined by some highly regarded jazz talent: guitarists Adam Levy, Adam Rogers, Tony Scherr, Bill Frisell, and Kevin Breit; drummers Brian Blade, Dan Rieser, and Kenny Wolleson; organist Sam Yahel; accordionist Rob Burger; and violinist Jenny Scheinman. Her regular guitarist and bassist, Jesse Harris and Lee Alexander, respectively, play on every track and also serve as the chief songwriters. Both have a gift for melody, simple yet elegant progressions, and evocative lyrics. Jones, for her part, wrote the title track and the beautifully restless "Nightingale." She also includes convincing readings of Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart," J.D. Loudermilk's "Turn Me On," and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You."
The definitive version of this recording is pressed on Classic Records Clarity 200g SV-P II as a 45RPM single sided four disc deluxe box set.

 Scott Matthew

180 Gram Audiophile Vigin Vinyl LP + 7" - Sealed

|
Scott Matthew is best known for his work on the John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig & the Angry Inch) film Shortbus (2006). Matthew wrote the theme song, “In the End,” (staged during the film in a long version by Tony-nominated performer Justin Bond), in addition to the songs "Little Bird," "Surgery" and "Upside Down" performed in the film by Scott himself and featured on the soundtrack. For his debut album, in addition to seven original tracks, Scott arranged and recorded new versions of the songs used in Shortbus. Together with his producer Mike Skinner (not of The Streets) he arranges the instruments and stylistic devices with such a lightness and elegance, it seems as though the songs are falling accidentally through space and time. Classical string arrangements in "Balladear," "Habit" and "Abandoned" are juxtaposed with minimalist ensembles like "Little Bird" and "Upside Down" where a ukulele supports his exceptional, soulful voice. This 180g gatefold vinyl version also contains a bonus 7” with the two unreleased tracks “Language” and “For Dick.”

$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP Import - Sealed

|
Naim Label stalwart, and virtuoso acoustic guitarist Antonio Forcione introduces his highly successful Ghetto Paradise on 180g virgin vinyl. Originally released in 1999, Ghetto Paradise was Forcione’s third studio album to be released on the Naim Label. The album has enjoyed the same rigorous quality control of an Abbey Road remaster for the vinyl edition (by Steve Rooke) which has been pressed at the legendary Portalspace Records in the UK.
Ghetto Paradise features the rhythmic midas touch of legendary world jazz percussionist Trilok Gurtu (who has worked with everybody from John McLaughlin to Neneh Cherry), Liberian/German fretless bass extraordinaire Kai Eckhardt (also of John McLaughlin Trio and well known for his work in the 1990s with Billy Cobham) and additional musical textures from saxophonists Roberto Manzin and Ed Jones, bassist Davide Mantovani and percussionist Bosco de Oliveira. Both visually and sonically, Ghetto Paradise was highly inspired by the sight and sounds of Antonio’s upbringing in the Italian hilltop town of Montecilfone and the importance of family oriented life; even the cover photograph is the work of Forcione’s late father, Michele Forcione. Recorded by Peter Williams at September Sounds, London and originally mastered by Julian Vereker.
“Ghetto Paradise is a sophisticated mixture of Antonio’s unique style, and an amazing world class rhythm section. All ten tracks on the album have been written and arranged by Antonio, a glowing testimony to his abilities as a composer and to the fact that Antonio’s already considerable talent is just getting better and better! This album is a true high-point for Antonio’s original and popular guitar playing.” - Notes from Original Press Release

 Afro-Bossa
Duke Ellington
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
In 1962, Duke Ellington's greatest creative achievements lay outside the realm of his orchestra in stunning small-group collaborations with Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Max Roach. But 1963 would prove a different story from the first week of the year when he completed work on Afro-Bossa, which according to the late pianist and Ellington scholar Mark Tucker "ranks among the best albums he ever made." The title is a bit of a misnomer as there is not a bossa nova or samba rhythm anywhere on the album. Instead it is a head-on fusion of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and pure blue-hued Duke.
Despite the inclusion of three older pieces ("Absinthe," "Pyramid" and "Eighth Veil"), the album is a cohesive and startling vivid original 12-part suite. Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Hamilton, Paul Gonsalves, Ray Nance, Cootie Williams and Lawrence Brown are the principal soloists and each are in superb form here. The title tune, "Caline (Silk Lace)" and "Pyramid" found their way into the band's regular performance book and perhaps the greatest composition in the suite, "Purple Gazelle" became a favorite among other musicians. This is Ellington at his best when the compositions, the orchestra and the soloists fuse into a single element that brings rich, colorful music to life.

Polvo
$24.99
Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed

In Prism is the best Polvo record even before you get to the majestic "A Link in the Chain," serene and tempestuous like few other things you'll ever hear. Polvo spent 1990–98 giving voice to a chorus of discrete rock & roll ideas that really hadn't been heard before. While there was nothing wrong before, it's now so much more right, perhaps because after ten years, after other bands and and tours and records and worries (if they had any), none of the peripheral stuff matters anymore. The album was recorded with Brian Paulson and Polvo has never sounded better.

 East of Eden
Taken By Trees
$15.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed

East Of Eden is the new album by Taken By Trees, the result of an extraordinarily adventurous recording process in Pakistan with local musicians. Production skills were handled in Sweden by Dan Lissvik (partner in the Swedish duo ‘Studio”) with guest vocals from Noah Lennox of Animal Collective on “Anna.”
Taken by Trees is the nom de plume of Victoria Bergsman, previously best known for her work with The Concretes and Peter Bjorn & John’s worldwide smash hit single “Young Folks.” This new offering follows in the footsteps of Taken By Trees' critically acclaimed debut album Open Field which was released in 2007.
Victoria wanted to travel to record in a mysterious, relatively uncharted area, and avoid the usual clinical studio experience. In order to provide herself with both an interesting challenge and an inspirational recording environment, she chose Pakistan. The rhythm, drums and flutes of Pakistani music had long captivated Victoria and this coupled with a deep admiration for one of her favorite singers Abida Parveen and the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan helped her choose Pakistan as the place to record her new album.
While it’s practically a miracle that the album was made at all, the experience and environment there has created a masterful work with a depth of expression and feeling that is breathtaking. Victoria is one of the very few, if not the only, Western women, to record in this region, and the bureaucracy, cultural differences and prejudicesshe had to overcome to see this project through are beyond belief.
Track Listing:
1. To Lose Someone
2. Anna
3. Watch The Waves
4. Greyest Love Of All
5. Tidens Gång

 Sound the Alarm
Howie Day

Vinyl LP - Sealed

|
Several years after releasing his million selling album Stop All The World Now, which spawned the #1 smash hit “Collide," singer and songwriter Howie Day breaks his silence with his long-awaited third studio album Sound The Alarm. This album comes after more than a decade of touring, during which the Bangor, Maine native self-released his 2000 debut Australia and became a full-time traveling musician. He became known for his powerful one-man shows, connecting with audiences through his charm, humor, and the strength of his songwriting.
“The new album very obviously echoes my own life, in all of its highs and lows,” Day says. “Some of the songs draw inspiration from people and places I’ve observed, and then bits of my own experiences find their way in. People often ask me what certain songs are about, and it’s like, Well, I don’t know, it’s a story that just happened subconsciously. I didn’t resist it or fight it. In a simple way, the album is a post-coming-of age story about that dream-like period of your early 20s, when you’re trying to figure out how grown up you actually want to be. But in the process of all of that moving around during the recording, the album became a diary of those experiences as well.”

Following upon the success of last year’s Gone, Just Like A Train, Bill Frisell reunites with his much-admired partners from this last outing plus a handful of others for another session of inspired music-making. Joined by renowned drummer Jim Keltner and Lyle Lovett bassist Viktor Krauss, the core band is further expanded to a quintet with the addition of Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang) on dobro, mandolin and steel guitars, Wayne Horvitz on organ and Billy Cox on guitar, with a special guest appearance by Ry Cooder.
With the gut-first feeling of rock, the subtleties of jazz, and the earnestness of country, Bill Frisell continues to create a genre unto himself. As with his last two albums, he continues in a musical vein that has brought him a new level of sales success and radio play, all the while maintaining the respect he has commanded as an innovator for nearly 20 years.
“What Frisell has begun to fashion on his latest releases is a sensibility as unmistakably American as that of Charles Ives or Duke Ellington, with the harmonic and tonal complexity of both and a seductive melancholy all his own.” – L.A. Weekly

"Mingus is also all about the ensemble...this reissue has a life and immediacy I've not heard before with this title, whose stunning music overwhelms any flaws of the recording." - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, June/July 2009
Produced by Impulse! A&R director Bob Thiele in 1963, this recording is a major showcase of the talented Charles Mingus as a bassist, pianist and writer. In his 1963 original liner notes, critic-at-large Nat Hentoff said that of all the musicians, it is impossible to remain indifferent to Mingus. This recording more than any other testifies to Hentoff's claim. More so today than in 60's, there is truly only one Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus.

 New Soil
Jackie McLean
$49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
New Soil wasn't the first session Jackie McLean recorded for Blue Note, but it was the first one released, and as the title suggests, the first glimpses of McLean's desire to push beyond the limits of bop are already apparent. They're subtle, of course, and nowhere near as pronounced, as they would be in just a few years' time, but – as with the 1959 material later issued on Jackie's Bag – hints of Ornette Coleman's stream-of-consciousness melodic freedom are beginning to find their way into McLean's improvisations. His playing is just a touch more angular than the ear expects, especially given the very bluesy nature of pieces like McLean's 11-minute vamp, "Hip Strut," and pianist Walter Davis Jr.'s infectious boogie-woogie "Greasy." Coleman's influence is most apparent on McLean's "Minor Apprehension," where the freewheeling, Coleman-esque main theme is paralleled by trumpeter Donald Byrd in a definite nod to Don Cherry.

The Three Sounds were part of the trio explosion. Begun in 1956 in Benton Harbor, Michigan as the Four Sounds and consisting of Gene Harris on piano, Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums (the saxophonist was dropped by the time the group moved to Washington, D.C. in 1957), the Sounds eventually migrated to New York City where they were "discovered" by Lou Donaldson. After a single record for Riverside with Nat Adderley, the Three Sounds signed an exclusive contract with Alfred Lion on Blue Note Records. Over the course of five years, the Sounds released nine LPs and appeared on albums by Lou Donaldson and Stanley Turrentine.

Although a Blue Note regular at the time on sessions by Donald Byrd, Art Blakey and others, Walter Davis made only one album for the label. With Byrd, Jackie McLean, Sam Jones and Art Taylor, he explores six of his finest compositions. "Minor Mind," "Make It" and "Millie's Delight" are among the album's highlights.

"A soul survivor in every sense of the term, this alto saxophonist is one of the few remaining jazz artists who made a major impact on the jazz community via an extensive run with producer Alfred Lion and the Blue Note label (Horace Silver being another Blue Note legend that comes to mind). From his first recordings for the label with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, it was clear that Lou Donaldson put melody and sound at a premium, coming up with an amalgam that combined the creamy smoothness of Johnny Hodges with the quicksilver bop inflections of Charlie Parker." – All About Jazz

This 1960 trio date was pianist Parlan's first of many great releases for Blue Note. The Pittsburgh native, who overcame polio as a child that left his right hand crippled, had gained some serious props with his contributions on two of Charles Mingus' best albums the year prior (Mingus Ah Um, Blues And Roots), and was now ready to step out on his own. Choosing to tackle mostly standards, Parlan channels his idol Bud Powell's classic trio dates with the able assistance of Blue Note regulars Sam Jones, bass and drummer Al Harewood. The result is an eclectic mix, interpreting the works of Tadd Dameron, Duke Ellington, Milt Jackson and Burke-Van Heussen plus a Parlan original, "Up In Cynthia's Room," which became one of his signature pieces.

His robust and passionate playing styles always seemed to inspire other musicians in his company. In the late fifties and early sixties, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson recorded primarily with his own quartet with pianist Herman Foster or with organ trios. Occasionally, he'd break the mold as he did on this February, 1960 session that was strictly a hard bop affair which includes trumpeter Bill Hardman and pianist Horace Parlan. There's still plenty of funk in evidence as "Goose Grease" bears out, but "Hardman's Politely," "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" and "The Man I Love" find Lou digging deep into his bop roots.

Although for many fans the equation Count Basie = Big Band Jazz is quite undisputable, one has to agree that when one listens to these eight numbers: less is more when it comes to swing. Bob Thiele, Impulse producer, came to the conclusion that even with a meager budget a whole lot of music with a terrific sound could be squeezed into the grooves. As always, the great soloists of the Basie big band are on top form: first and foremost Frank Wess who demonstrates how rightly popular the flute is for its sound-coloring and as a solo instrument. Thad Jones on the trumpet is quite outstanding in all the numbers – and is equally important as composer and arranger. The "All American Rhythm Group Number 1" consisting of the Count, Freddie Green, Eddie Jones and Sonny Payne deliver one adrenaline-like thrill after another – without ever neglecting the jazz beat. All in all this is an important LP from the Impulse label, whose quality is greatly enhanced by the transparent sound.

A 1962 set from the Roy Haynes Quartet – which, at the time, consisted of Haynes, Henry Grimes on bass, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Roland Kirk on saxes, manzello, stritch and flutes. The album is a delightful mix of technique in arrangement and performance, with all of the musicians delivering terrific work – Haynes' drumming is absolutely wonderful here, lightly dancing around the other instruments. Flanagan's piano playing is equally light and delicate, and Grimes' bass work is outstanding. There's not much that can be said about Kirk's sax and flute work that hasn't already been said a hundred times.

 How Big Can You Get?

How Big Can You Get? is a career milestone for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and not only as an illuminating revival of Calloway’s often hilarious songbook, in the most skilled and enthusiastic hands imaginable. It’s also a revelatory moment for the band, whose musicianship, fire and interpretive powers are at an all-time high.
According to bandleader Scotty Morris “making the album was one of our biggest musical moments. Delving into Cab's music made us see the high level that his songs were written and arranged at, and why they've lasted. We went top-to-bottom live in the studio and chose the best takes for the album, because Cab's originals were live performances and radio broadcasts. People got a glimpse of him when he stole the show in the Blues Brothers movie. We want people to know he was more than the King of Hi-De-Ho-we want to put a light on Cab's legacy more fully."
Produced by Morris and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the record includes some of Calloway’s classics including “Minnie the Moocher,” “The Ghost of Smokey Joe” and “The Jumpin’ Jive” alongside some of his less obvious, yet just as powerful tunes like “Reefer Man,” “Calloway Boogie” and “The Old Man of the Mountain” all performed with the band’s usual enthusiastic approach and great interpretation.

Bass player Luke Top and guitarist Lewis Pesacov were longtime friends with a shared love for world music when they started fronting informal African-inspired dance sessions two years ago at Los Angeles clubs such as the famed Spaceland and The Echo. The sound caught on, and soon musicians from across the city were clamoring to sit in with the ever expanding ensembles.
With a current roster of 10 to 12 musicians on any given night, including current and former members of bands such as Foreign Born, The Fall, We Are Scientists, Glasser, Cass McCombs' Band and even the Argentinean pop star, Erica Garcia (who's been nominated for Grammy's and won Rolling Stone Latin America best female singer three years in a row!), Fool's Gold plays a distinctive hybrid of dance sounds from West Africa, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.

Kris Kristofferson returns to the essentials of his finely honed craft on his new album Closer To The Bone. Like the master singer/songwriter's 2006 New West bow This Old Road, this album is produced by Grammy Award winner Don Was. The previous collection was hailed by critics as "one of the finest albums of his storied career" (Rolling Stone), "a stripped-down stunner" (Esquire) and "a return to his best work" (Q).
Closer To The Bone is a deftly observed, honestly executed work about love, separation, loss and mortality. The subject matter ranges from the musician's family ("From Here to Forever," "The Wonder"), to his late friend Johnny Cash ("Good Morning John").
"I like the intimacy of the new album. It has a general mood of reflecting on where we all are at this end of life." - Kris Kristofferson
