 Black Sheep Boy: Definitive Edition
Okkervil River
$21.99
Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
This is the definitive double-album set which brings together Okkervil River’s groundbreaking Black Sheep Boy project in its entirety including the original album, the 7-song Black Sheep Boy Appendix EP, and the song “The Next Four Months” (originally released on the “For Real” CD single).
Black Sheep Boy is a love story and adult fable carved in lacerating rock and roll, desolate late-night country weepers, and a few shining moments of sheer, shameless pop. Along the way, the compositions of Will Sheff evoke the mature songcraft of Leonard Cohen’s New Skin for the Old Ceremony, the sophistication of Scott Walker’s Scott 4, the shambling slow motion bravado of Neil Young’s On the Beach, and the raw nerves and trick effects of Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers.
The Appendix is not just a companion piece to Black Sheep Boy; it’s also a condensed, alternate vision of that record’s imagery and themes, with the ultimate intent to exhaust and destroy both. This ambitious mini-album rounds up and reworks the band’s favorite unfinished songs (tracked for the full-length) and then punctuates and bookends them in brand-new compositions.

1. Black Sheep Boy
2. For Real

 Orphans
Tom Waits

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 7 LPs Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
Orphans has been a genuine phenomenon in the storied career of Tom Waits, a collection of “songs that fell behind the stove while making dinner,” that has been greeted with open arms by thrilled Waits fans. The album quickly became his fastest‐selling release ever, his first certified gold record, and a genuine classic in the Waits cannon. The collection goes far beyond a simple career retrospective, with over 30 newly recorded songs from Waits’ own versions of songs he gave to other artists to some “things I recorded in the garage with the kids.” Over two‐thirds of the material has never been heard before now. In addition to the new work, Orphans features a number of tracks finding a home on a Waits album for the first time. They include Waits’ unique interpretations of songs by such diverse talents as The Ramones, Daniel Johnston, Kurt Weill & Bertolt Brecht, and Leadbelly. Now Waits is bringing Orphans to a glorious‐sounding 7 LP box set, all pressed on 180g vinyl, and housed in a deluxe pull‐out case. In addition, Waits has added six more tracks from the archives, including Tom’s irreverent take on Fats Waller’s “Crazy ‘Bout My Baby.” Longtime Waits fans and the newly converted will want to own this collector’s edition of one of Waits’ most important releases.
Features 7 full length LPs, with 56 tracks, including 6 additional bonus tracks not on the CD and deluxe 12” booklet with Lyrics.

 OCD Go Go Go Girls
Lovvers
$15.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
Although, originally hailing from different parts of the UK, the Lovvers formed while all four members were living in Nottingham in 2005. The group re-calls the spirit of the Germs, the weirdeness of Flipper, the pop-style of the Wipers, and the carefree attitude of The Replacements.
Having released four noisy 7" singles, the band signed to Wichita Recordings in 2008 and released the Think EP that same year. With OCD Go Go Girls the Lovvers set about making a record that in their own words is “an unconventional weird pop record.” The first single of the same name takes the Real Kids or Television and perhaps adds a touch of influence from the Lovvers’ other favorite bands, such as No Age or Times New Viking. The album is new-meets-old but by the end it’s fuzzed out Woodstock. This is vintage stuff; a completely analog recording.
Track Listing:
1. Creepy Crawl
2. Four Count
3. Ad Lib
4. OCD Go Go Girls
5. I Want To (Go)
6. 100 Flowers
7. Golden Bars Blue

Two Fingers are Brazilian beat adventurer pioneer Amon Tobin and Joe "Doubleclick" Chapman. The pair met when Tobin lived in Brighton and bonded over an interest in music that ran way beyond the boundaries of electronica. Together in Montreal, they applied production techniques associated with U.K. styles such as drum & bass to the template of hip hop. U.K. artist, Sway was so taken with what they were doing, he flew straight out to Montreal and recorded seven tracks with them. The remaining rhythms were voiced by some time Missy protege Ms. Jade and dancehall legend Ce'Cile. The result is a project unlike anything that any of the three main players has ever made before. It is a unique, utterly uncompromising, brutal and beautiful record that could only have grown out of the U.K. and the internationalism of those involved.

Where The Wild Things Are: Original Soundrtack
Karen O and the Kids
$15.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
Inside Karen O is a Wild Thing, as singer for the Grammy-nominated Yeah Yeah Yeahs, her wild thing is in your face, vulnerable, obnoxious, tender, exciting... a self-proclaimed "spazoid." To Oscar-nominated Where the Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze, however, Karen O and her music possess something of a child-like innocence, a guileless charm that put her exactly on the right emotional wavelength to sonically capture the film, be it a tender moment or a wild rumpus.
To compose the music, O enlisted friends and fellow musicians she believed had a musical intuition that would bolster her intent to marry sound to vision. Dubbed Karen O and the Kids, these include Tristan Bechet (Services), Tom Biller (co-producer with Karen O and member of Afternoons), Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee), Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), Oscar Michel (Gris Gris), Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska), Nick Zinner, (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and an untrained children's choir.
"I didn't want to make music that was hammering you over the head or go for some kind of pushbutton emotion," O says. "What I initially wanted to do was close to Cat Stevens in Harold & Maude, really simple, but memorably and seamlessly woven into the movie.
"Working with all these highly-empathetic musicians over of a couple of years on this soundtrack was a lesson in the power of collaboration," says O.
Together, Karen O and the Kids created songs that are at times gargantuan and at others stripped-down and bittersweet. Jonze pushed O to pour as much heart and soul as she could muster into the songs, reminding her that the music would play a heavy role in the film. That's saying a lot, considering it's based on the Maurice Sendak classic, one of the most beloved books of all time, with a screenplay co-written by Jonze and author and McSweeney's publisher Dave Eggers. Where the Wild Things Are is ultimately a story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in.

 Manassas
Stephen Stills
$39.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed

|
Between 1970 and 1972, Stephen Stills was busy playing with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and working on a series of solo albums. In addition to all this activity he led the super group that appears on this stunning release. Manassas finds Stills and company (Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor and Al Perkins among others) at the intersection of rock, folk, country and blues. Distinctive styles are noticeable song by song, yet it is the strength and credibility of the mixture that makes Manassas such a great overall experience. The first fourth of the album focuses on '60s rock with Afro-Cuban overtones, followed by a batch of country and bluegrass-oriented material. The folk-rock track "It Doesn't Matter" kicks off the third section and the final section wraps the set up with the rootsy groove of "Blues Man," a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Manassas is a rich and varied collection that is as sophisticated and complex as it is earthy and easy to listen to.

Embryonic is The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album and first double LP. According to ringleader Wayne Coyne, Embryonic was conceived as a double album as a means of forcing the band to become more free and uninhibited. “I believe I was stuck thinking of us as being a group of reckless, sloppy freaks,” he explains “and that, if we weren’t constantly trying to be more disciplined or more refined or more together, maybe our creative luck would elude us.” As the title suggests, Embryonic has an air of being a work in progress rather than a completed action and it makes for some very exciting and liberating music from one of music's most enigmatic performers.
"It sounds like John Lennon but if he got together with Miles Davis and they went back in time, but there was a supercomputer that they could figure out how to work." - Wayne Coyne/NME on Embryonic

Since the release of Mazzy Star's debut album She Hangs Brightly, Hope Sandoval has defined the sound and style of California psychedelic dream pop. The world took notice when the surprise breakthrough single, "Fade Into You," hit the airwaves and heavy rotation at MTV. Sandoval's trademark vocals and beauty helped to make her a modern day music icon. Now the revered singer returns with her long awaited post-Mazzy Star sophomore album, Through The Devil Softly. Since her time with Mazzy Star, the sought after vocalist has collaborated with artists from across the musical landscape: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Air, Death in Vegas, The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack and Bert Jansch.
In 2001 she joined Colm Ó Cíosóig (of My Bloody Valentine), and backing Irish band Dirt Blue Gene, to form Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, and released their debut Bavarian Fruit Bread. Now on Through The Devil Softly, the definitive star of the Paisley Underground scene reignites her trademark sound in an epic journey across the 11 song album. The project continues the laid-back, slowcore sound they are renowned for and places Sandoval's sensuous, hypnotic voice in the forefront. Recorded at home in Berkley, the spare, subtle arrangements reinforce Sandoval's gentle vocal style.

Ranked #1 in Kerrang magazine's "100 Gigs That Shook The World" and voted as "Nirvana's #1 Greatest Moment" by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana's historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK's Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock 'n' roll. Now, fans finally can own a pristine copy of that entire performance complete with remastered audio.
While the show’s centerpiece was a performance of nearly the entire Nevermind tracklist, also noteworthy were early performances of three as yet unrecorded songs which wouldn’t be released until a year later on In Utero: "All Apologies,” “Dumb,” and, in its first ever public performance, “Tourette’s." The career-spanning set list also reached back to the band’s 1989 Sub Pop debut album, Bleach, for “Blew,” “About A Girl,” “School,” “Negative Creep,” and the band's first single “Love Buzz,” and even further back for “Spank Thru.”
Other songs from the Reading set would appear in studio form on the Incesticide compilation later in the year: “Aneurysm,” “Been A Son” and “Sliver.” Additionally, the band played a pair of beloved covers by two bands that helped shape the formative Nirvana sound: “The Money Will Roll Right In” by Fang and “D-7” by The Wipers.

 Battle Studies
John Mayer
$24.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed

|
John Mayer's Battle Studies was co-produced by Mayer and Steve Jordan and debuts three years after his critically acclaimed 2006 album, Continuum. Incorporating the warmth, melodies and simplicity of '70's and '80's California rock/pop, Battle Studies is a confessional, relaxed and liberated album recorded in a private home in California where Mayer lived and worked over the course of six months before wrapping at the famed Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.
The album's first single, "Who Says" challenges conventional standards of what one can accomplish or undertake despite society's constraints. Battle Studies also showcases universal themes on "Heartbreak Warfare," "Assassin," and "War of My Life," while flexing guitar chops on "Rock Song," and a reinterpretation of "Crossroads." The famously collaborative guitar player also invited one of music's brightest new talents, Taylor Swift, to appear on "Half of My Heart."
"I approach music like a director doing a period piece," says Mayer. "Where Continuum was R&B and Soul, Battle Studies was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity."

 Dire Straits
Dire Straits

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Dire Straits’ self-titled debut arrived in the midst of punk’s reign but couldn’t have been further removed from the era’s slash-and-burn style. Here is tasteful, jazz-inflected rock, all smoothly skating on virtuoso guitarist Mark Knopfler’s winding guitar lines and the band’s laidback rhythms. Equally drawing from country, roots, and folk influences, the British quartet’s stripped-down music knew no peers in the 70s, and has never been matched to this day.
Part of the reason for the band’s uniqueness owes to its clean, vibrant sound. Just as Knopfler’s narratives reflect poetic and surrealist texts, the group’s arrangements, an intoxicating combination of easygoing shuffles, bluesy boogies, and pop-honed ballads, mirror the old-fashioned soulfulness and spaciousness inherent in the classic recordings of the late '50s and early '60s. It’s no wonder why Dire Straits has long been a favorite of audiophiles the world over. When it comes to sonic purity, transparent soundstages, and rich tonalities, few, if any bands sound better.
And now, thanks to the meticulous efforts of Warner Bros., Dire Straits’ 1978 breakthrough debut can be experienced like never before. Remastered and cut from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-quality 180g vinyl, Dire Straits is simply out-of-this-world good. Knopfler’s mesmerizing guitar textures and cool vocals appear as if they’re right in front of you. Details, imaging, and presence are on a level associated with the finest audiophile recordings.
As it’s proven for the last few years, Warner Bros. treats vinyl with the ultimate respect, and this must-have Dire Straits record is no exception. Listeners with original copies of the LP, or Simply Vinyl’s pressing, will be absolutely stunned upon hearing the improvements. And the rest of us can simply rejoice in knowing that low-key songs such as “Sultans of Swing” and “Southbound Again” resonate with an airiness, openness, and palpability they’ve never claimed prior. A five-star pressing!

2. Water of Love
3. Setting Me Up
4. Six Blade Knife
5. Southbound Again
6. Sultans of Swing

John Coltrane

These recordings from March 13, 1958 see a 32-year-old John Coltrane playing an obscure date with little known jazz trumpeter/flugelhorn player, Wilbur Harden. These recordings made at the legendary Van Gelder studios also include Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums (while the 2 bonus tracks feature Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ali Jackson on bass, Howard Williams on piano, and Arthur Taylor on drums). The immensely talented, but equally obscure Harden appeared on several Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller records for Savoy as well as leading his own sessions in the late '50s, only to drop out of the jazz scene entirely by 1960 due to health problems (and finally pass away in 1969). In fact, Harden was a great composer and a pioneer on the flugelhorn and all the tracks on this album are Harden compositions. Coltrane, as history has shown, fared much better, and during this period was just on the cusp of super-stardom. He was busy playing around NYC with Thelonious Monk, and had recently rejoined the Miles Davis sextet, and it would not be long before Coltrane would begin leading his own sessions, soon becoming a household name in jazz. Features 2 bonus tracks previously not included on the original album.

Harry Smith's Anthology Of Folk Music Volume 1
Various Artists
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed

The importance of Harry Smith's work can not be overstated. Not only did he single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk revival of the following decade. Not since John and Alan Lomax had anyone paid so much attention to saving the American folk song from extinction, but unlike the Lomaxes, Smith was not a government worker armed with a tape recorder, he was just a guy from Portland, Oregon armed with a love for music and an insatiably curious mind. So, when the U.S. Government began melting down old records to be used as shellac during WWII, Smith kicked into high gear, buying up as many old 78s from the '20s and '30s as he could find. Much of the music found here then, comes from a time before television, arm-in-arm with rock & roll, began beaming its über-culture into every household in America erasing much of what had grown up locally in each area. As can be heard so beautifully on these ballads, prior to WWII America was in many ways no more than a patchwork of territories, with local cultures and musical traditions reaching both far into the immigrant past of each area's inhabitants, but also into the future to create something wonderful and firmly rooted in the newness and adventure of life on this new continent.

And the “social music” that grew up in this time period was both “social” in the sense of “social gathering” (barn dances, religious gatherings, etc.), but also in the sense of “social issues” (labor rights, migration, money troubles, etc.). Their music was, therefore, a reflection of their lives, serving both as respite from their troubles (these were desperate times: the dust bowl, the depression, tenement housing, sweat shops, etc., were all part of the these people's everyday lives), but also as a vehicle for their discontent.

1996’s 12 Golden Country Greats is the Pennsylvania duo’s 5th full-length but the first to stick to just one style which was, surprisingly enough, country music. That said, the title of the album is only half-correct as there’s actually only 10 songs here. Featuring some of Nashville’s greatest session musicians (including "Pig" Robbins, Charlie McCoy, and the Jordanaires), this is one of Ween’s finest records to date, with that classic Ween sense of humor filtered through a distinct countrypolitan sound.

1997’s The Mollusk is yet another sign that Ween just got better and better with each record it's arguably their most concise and well-honed to date. After the previous year’s exercise in country music (12 Golden Country Greats) the duo returns to its usual genre jumping, though there is a heavy focus on prog-rock. Often nautically themed and, as always, way smarter than they’re given credit for, The Mollusk is one of the highest points in a brilliant catalog.

A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector
Various Artists

In 1963, visionary producer Phil Spector, then at the peak of his creativity and cultural influence, created one of the first—and still one of the greatest—rock ’n’ roll Christmas albums. Using the artist roster of his Philles label—the Ronettes, the Crystals, Darlene Love and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans—and the legendary studio musicians of the Wrecking Crew, Spector applied his fabled Wall of Sound to a set of Christmas pop standards and holiday-themed originals.
The resulting album brilliantly merges the holiday spirit with the singular sonic uplift of the Spector sound. Highlights include the Ronettes’ bubbly reworkings of “Sleigh Ride,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” the Crystals’ upbeat renditions of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and Darlene Love’s soulful readings of “Winter Wonderland,” “White Christmas” and the Ellie Greenwich/Jeff Barry/Phil Spector composition “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” A Christmas Gift for You concludes with a rare on-mike appearance by Spector himself, delivering a spoken holiday message to listeners.
A Christmas Gift for You originally had the misfortune of being released on November 22, 1963, the same day as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and was not a major commercial success. In the years since, however, it has been embraced as a beloved pop-culture touchstone, with many of its tracks becoming holiday airplay favorites. In 2003, A Christmas Gift for You was ranked Number 142 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Longtime Spector fan Brian Wilson has named it as his all-time favorite LP. The album’s influence has also been reflected in cover versions by contemporary artists. Bruce Springsteen based his interpretation of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” on the Crystals’ Spectorized version, while U2 closely followed Darlene Love’s original when covering “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”
Sundazed’s new edition of A Christmas Gift for You is sourced directly from the original Philles label mono masters and is pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Listeners can now perfectly re-experience the original magic of this timeless holiday treasure!

These two virtuoso guitarists were coming from different musical worlds when they came together for this unique 1972 project. What they shared, besides the instrument they'd mastered, was profound spirituality; both had taken inspiration from the music of John Coltrane. The core of Love Devotion Surrender is made up of the three magnificent extended guitar jams including Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" which borders on spiritual ecstasy. To hear Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin trading licks and then coming together is a guitar fan's dream come true and while the guitar playing is absolutely stunning in its virtuosity here, the music never loses its focus or its soul.

The Blues Is Where It's At
Otis Spann
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

|
Otis Spann was the leading postwar blues piano player in Chicago. An indispensable member of the Muddy Waters Blues Band, Spann's magnificent rich, frosty voice and his expressive singing style were confined to a handful of gigs and occasional recording projects.
The Blues Is Where It's At was recorded in 1966 at the end of a gig by the Muddy Waters Band in New York City. The band, which backs Spann here, includes Muddy Waters, Sammy Lawhorn and Luther Johnson on guitars and the amazing George "Harmonica" Smith. Word had spread about the record date and an impromptu audience of friends and fans showed up, providing an unintended studio audience. Their presence keeps the band raw and relaxed. Musically, the results sound like a great third set at a club instead of a studio recording. Spann's singing was at its peak and his piano playing is pure blues.
Track Listing:
1. Popcorn Man
2. Brand New House
3. Nobody Knows Chicago Like I Do (Party Blues)
4. Steel Mill Blues
5. Down on Sarah Street
6. T'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do

 Candy-O
The Cars
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
How did the Cars move beyond their smash 1978 debut (also available on Mobile Fidelity 180-gram LP) and secure their status as one of music’s leading bands for years to come? Look no further than the quadruple-platinum Candy-O. Continuing along the streamlined pop paths of its predecessor, the sophomore effort is preoccupied with desirable women that are as mysterious, sexy, and cool as the group’s music—and the record’s pin-up cover.
With rare exception, few new-wave artists enjoyed much of a career outside of a one-hit wonder. Candy-O proves the Cars were anything but. It’s loaded with minimalist atmospherics, pulsing bass lines, catchy refrains, and labyrinthine synthesizers that stick in your mind for days. And while retaining a simplicity that’s a Cars hallmark, the album also takes myriad stylistic detours: the glam-rock accents of “Dangerous Type,” a song whose title references the record’s mysterious and lusty matter; the percolating riffs of the contagious title track; the dizzying garage-rock nature of the upbeat “Got a Lot on My Mind,” complete with a tooting Farfisa organ. Nothing drags or feels out of place.
Through it all, vocalists Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek keep their heads about themselves, singing in direct albeit detached tones that convey the tension, excitement, and risky promise inherent in the lyrics. Hook-laced choruses abound. Yet all is not what it seems.
“Hooks are mechanical by nature, but the affectlessness of these deserves special mention; only listeners who consider "alienation is the craze" a great insight will find much meaning here. On the other hand, only listeners who demand meaning in all things will find this useless. Cold and thin, shiny and hypnotic, it's what [the Cars] do best--rock and roll that is definitely pop without a hint of cuteness.” –Robert Christgau, The Consumer Guide
Half-speed mastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition LP brings the Cars’ distinctive melodies and exotic arrangements to the fore in ways that have never been heard outside of the recording studio. For the first time, Roy Thomas Baker’s vocal production shines, with each member’s contributions rescued from a cold sonic murk that detracted from the music’s impact on both vinyl and the extremely compressed CD. Once you hear the newly uncovered dynamics and rich textures, you’ll be wondering where they were all of these years. Chalk this up as an essential addition to your pop collection.
Track Listing:
1. "Let's Go"
2. "Since I Held You"
3. "It's All I Can Do"
4. "Double Life"
5. "Shoo Be Doo"
6. "Candy-O"
7. "Nightspots"
8. "You Can't Hold On Too Long"

 Waiting For Columbus
Little Feat
$39.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
When you think about great live albums, several immediately come to mind. The Who’s Live at Leeds. James Brown’s Live at the Apollo. The Allman Brothers Band’s Live at Fillmore East. Kiss’ Alive! Nirvana’s Unplugged. And, while it is sometimes unjustifiably forgotten, Little Feat’s Waiting for Columbus. The last essential album the rootsy California band made, it stands as the group’s peak accomplishment—a staggering confluence of energetic performances, skilled improvisations, and thematic expansion.
Joined onstage by the Tower of Power horn section, Little Feat accentuates and remakes familiar arrangements, using the stage as a laboratory for unbridled creativity, New Orleans-spiced fun, and spontaneous interaction. Bursting with enthusiasm and excitement, Waiting for Columbus is truly a live album for the ages—and one of a certain distinctive era.
“The abundance of great music, the culture of drugs, and the politics of Richard Nixon, which had everyone polarized and created more of a sense of community, all contributed to this incredible feeling that somehow we were on a collective journey. Waiting for Columbus is one of the last parts of that journey, and among the last vestiges of that scene.” –Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne, as told to Bud Scoppa
Amazingly, the set came together under less-than-ideal conditions. In the months leading up to the seven 1977 Washington D.C. and London concerts that were taped for the record, leader Lowell George had removed himself from the band’s affairs. The chemistry was fractured, but the shows functioned as a molding agent. And did Little Feat ever respond. With every member of the sextet playing like their life depended on it, and a guest appearance by ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor, this is a must-have set.
Track Listing:
1. Join The Band
2. Fat Man In The Bathtub
3. All That You Dream
4. Oh, Atlanta
5. Old Folks Boogie
6. Time Loves A Hero
7. Day Or Night

 Armed Forces
Elvis Costello
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
Largely written on tour in hotel rooms and on the bus, Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces takes personal politics to a new level. A supremely melodic and hook-laden record, the 1979 set is a showcase of scintillating keyboard lines, sharp guitar work, and the most cohesive arrangements of Costello and the Attractions’ career. In every way, this is a pop masterpiece, defined by hits such as “Accidents Will Happen,” “Oliver’s Army,” and the anthemic “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love and Understanding?” You need this record.
While less musically intense than the preceding This Year’s Model, Armed Forces doesn’t let up in the lyric department. Costello’s narratives are loaded with paranoia, irony, bitterness, and scathing humor. Originally titled Emotional Fascism, the singer’s third consecutive masterpiece is inspired by billboard sign slogans, insular observations, and social behavior that Costello found applicable to his own situation. “Oliver’s Army,” “Green Shirt,” and “Senior Service” address systemic governmental control. “Big Boys,” “Two Little Hitlers,” and “Accidents Will Happen” also concern control and betrayal—but that of the interpersonal nature.
Given the luxury of six weeks in the studio, Costello and the Attractions responded with spacious arrangements and a few extra touches and instrumental colors that add to the songs’ charm. Steve Nieve employs a monophonic Minimoog keyboard and pianos patterned after Abba’s sweet pop; whispers are exaggerated into black comedy shouts on “Goon Squad”; layered and echoed vocals provide the illusion of several Costello voices on multiple tracks. The band is of a piece, constantly in harmony and on the same page.
Half-speed mastered from the original tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition 180-gram LP presents the vibrant dynamics of Armed Forces’ timeless pop songs in the highest possible fidelity. This album has never sounded so full, rich, airy, spacious, detailed, or necessary. The textures and voicings of Nieve’s keyboards are alone worth the investment. This pressing will have you dancing in the aisles and analyzing Costello’s brilliant turns of phrase for years to come.
Track Listing:
1. Accidents Will Happen
2. Senior Service
3. Oliver's Army
4. Big Boys
5. Green Shirt
6. Party Girl
7. Goon Squad
8. Busy Bodies
9. Sunday's Best

 This Year's Model
Elvis Costello
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
PRE-ORDER
|
The first record he made with his legendary backing band the Attractions, This Year’s Model is Elvis Costello’s most explosive and urgent album. Picking up where his fine My Aim Is True left off, the British singer/guitarist blasts through 13 excellent tracks with the fervent purpose and headlong pace of someone who has a cab waiting for him outside.
Stylistically versatile, deeply varied, and melodically catchy, this where Costello came into his own—and where the chemistry between virtuosic keyboardist Steve Nieve, bassist Bruce Thomas, and drummer Pete Thomas produced one of rock’s best groups. A dynamic maelstrom of emotional spite, bitter frustration, sexual angst, and caustic political commentary, the 1978 set boosted Costello’s star and yielded innumerable standards: the undying MOR protest “Radio Radio,” fervent “Pump It Up,” smart “(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea,” and spunky “No Action” are all here.
While often cited as Costello’s “angry” record, This Year’s Model has more to do with disappointments and denials. The album bursts forth with a savage energy not possible without the Attractions, which are responsible for the songs being built from the ground up. Where Costello’s voice and twangy guitar dominate My Aim Is True, here, sizzling rhythms and Nieve’s colorful organ runs anchor the foundations. This is a group effort, with Costello’s biting lyrics taking chances and forcing the listener to mull double meanings all the while the music zooms by at a fast clip.
More than 30 years after its original release, This Year’s Model will still leave you breathless. Railing against unachievable desires, Costello and company delight in the anguish, and spit such torment back out in the form of hook-ridden music that functions as a brilliant form of situational confirmation and emotional catharsis.
Half-speed mastered from the original tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition 180-gram LP brings This Year’s Model’s vicious songs to the forefront like never before. Punchier, gutsier, and livelier than any of the myriad CD remasters, this analog edition offers a transparent window onto the Attractions' loose interplay, Nieve's carnivalesque organ work, and rabid pounce of the Thomas-Thomas rhythm section. Here, for the first time, are previously buried tones, textures, and details. It took years to happen, but this is how This Year’s Model was always supposed to sound.
Track Listing:
1. No Action
2. This Year's Girl
3. The Beat
4. Pump It Up
