 The Complete Sessions: The Clown
Charles Mingus
$24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
One of the most controversial and difficult musicians in jazz, Charles Mingus was also one of the most prolific, and perhaps the greatest bass player jazz has ever known. Released shortly after his groundbreaking Pithecanthropus Erectus, which marked the dawning of Mingus' era as a major player in jazz, The Clown took it to the next level and as a result captured some of the finest music Mingus ever made. Listeners can now enjoy the complete sessions for the album, recorded on Feb 13 and March 12, 1957. Uniquely for a jazz player of this period, this album is comprised entirely of Mingus-penned tracks, including the explosive “Haitian Fight Song” and his tribute to Charlie Parker “Reincarnation of a Lovebird,” while the title track features a spoken word piece by Jean Shepherd.
Track Listing:
1. Haitian Fight Song
2. Blue Cee
3. Reincarnation Of A Lovebird
4. The Clown
5. Passions Of A Woman Loved
6. Tonight At Noon

 Undercurrent
Kenny Drew

Kenny Drew was an underrated master of bebop. A brilliant pianist who started with the example of Bud Powell and then developed his own sound within the style, in the '50s Drew worked with the likes of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Buddy DeFranco, Dinah Washington and Art Blakey. By 1960 when he recorded Undercurrent, Drew had already led ten albums of his own, mostly with duos and trios. Oddly enough he only had the opportunity to lead two albums in his life for Blue Note, an early effort from 1953 and the classic Undercurrent. Matched in a quintet with the young firebrand trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and the always-stimulating tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, the 32-year old pianist was ready to truly make his mark. All six compositions are his, and in his accompaniment of the passionate horn men and in his soulful solos, Drew shows that he was one of the major hard bop stylists. He would not make another album as a leader until 1973, nine years after he permanently moved to Europe, but Kenny Drew’s playing on Undercurrent, a superb and very well-recorded Blue Note album that is arguably his finest work, is timeless.
Track Listing:
1. Undercurrent
2. Funk-Cosity
3. Lion's Den
4. The Pot's On
5. Groovin' The Blues
6. Ballade

 LD +3
Lou Donaldson
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Vinyl LP - Sealed

The Three Sounds were a very popular group in the late 1950s/early ‘60s and for good reason. Pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy always knew how to lay down an irresistible groove, they infused every song they played with a heavy dose of the blues and they could outswing any combo while never being stingy with the soul. The same could be said for altoist Lou Donaldson. Influenced by Charlie Parker but a bluesier player, Donaldson in the 1950s held his own on sessions with Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Smith while gaining a strong following with his series of Blue Note recordings. LD + 3 is a very special recording from 1959 featuring Donaldson and the Three Sounds really inspiring and pushing each other. Starting with a passionate version of “Three Little Words,” they dig into such bop classics as “Just Friends” and “Confirmation,” playing with plenty of heat. The mixture of bebop fury with soul makes this a true Blue Note milestone.

03. Jump Up
04. Just Friends

This unique session contains five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne. Both "Take the 'A' Train" and "Cherokee" find the group at times playing two tempos at once and showing that they had heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, "Avalon," was previously available only on a sampler while "Me and Some Drums" features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet with the veteran tenor making his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. The set is rounded out by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises.

Ben Webster's final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the U.S. and would soon permanently move to Europe. Joining Webster on this fine quartet set is Hank Jones and Roger Kellaway on piano, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Osie Johnson. Webster's tone has rarely sounded more beautiful than on "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Our Love Is Here to Stay."

 Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!!

Art Blakey discovered and championed young talented musicians such as Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Keith Jarrett and Wynton Marsalis to name but a few. But he also delivered the "message" of hard bop through thousands of performances at festivals right down to the smallest club. Lively, joyous performances, the very highest technical standards and somnambulistic music-making characterize this recording. Right from the very start it is clear that these jazz ambassadors have a new message for us. The hard-beat recordings win in lyricism thanks to the gentle sound of Curtis Fuller's trombone, something that was often missing in the powerful Blue Note sound. Four jazz evergreens give the musicians the time and opportunity to display their soloistic talents. The real climax, however, is to be found in the harmonic layering of the three winds which lend the themes new appeal. The message was broadcasted many times until the death of Art Blakey, but the history of jazz would have been a great deal poorer without these milestone recordings on the Impulse label. Art Blakey certainly knew how to delight his audience with fire, originality, a wealth of ideas and great humor. All these attributes are applicable to the six titles on this album.

 Today And Now
Coleman Hawkins

45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - 2 LPs Sealed

|
Coleman Hawkins recorded three sessions for Impulse Records in the early to mid '60's. Of the three, Today And Now is the most compelling and the unusual choice of repertoire is what sets the album apart. The Hawk plays with an abandon that is altogether effortless throughout and his versions of the traditional song "Go Li'l Liza" and the fairly obscure Quincy Jones ballad "Quintessence" are creatively rendered. His band consisting of pianist Tommy Flanagan, bass player Major Holley and drummer Eddie Locke, back the tenor king here with a similar imaginative approach. A largely impromptu session, each song develops and evolves with each chorus, and it would serve as one of Hawkins' last great records.
Coleman Hawkins Today And Now Track Listing

3. Don't Love Me
4. Love Song From 'Apache'

Live At The It Club (Mosaic Records)
Thelonious Monk
$99.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 4 LPs

The Thelonious Monk Quartet with Charlie Rouse lasted 11 years. October 31 and November 1, 1964 at the It Club in Los Angeles showcase Monk at particular high point pianistically; in fact, he went into a Los Angeles studio and recorded the album Solo Monk on the afternoons preceding and following the live taping. He is in full force throughout, but his playing is particularly superb on the standards "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and the previously unreleased "Sweet And Lovely."
The band plays standards, many of Monk's famous tunes, a few lesser known items like "Gallop's Gallop" and "Blues Five Spot" and the recent compositions "Teo" and "Bright Mississippi." Propelled by Gales and Riley, Monk and Rouse deliver amazing 10-minute excursions on such Monk classics as "Nutty," "Rhythm-a-ning" and "Blue Monk."
Rouse in his sixth year with Monk had hit his stride, truly becoming Monk's musical alter ego. Remarkably, drummer Ben Riley had joined the quartet at the beginning of 1964 and bassist Larry Gales had only logged in a month at the time of this taping; yet they already show the first signs of collective greatness on these evenings.
Mosaic has returned to the original three-track tapes and mixed them down to beautiful sounding analog stereo masters, presenting the six sets they played that night as they happened.

 Out To Lunch
Eric Dolphy
$49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP 45 RPM - 2 LPs Sealed
|
In the history of jazz, Eric Dolphy was the first innovator to develop a strikingly original yet different voice on three instruments: alto-sax, flute and bass clarinet. When Dolphy burst upon the New York scene in 1960, he already had over a decade of experience. Originally influenced most by Charlie Parker, Dolphy was part of Los Angeles' Central Avenue scene in the late 1940s. Virtually nothing was heard of him on records in the 1950s before he joined the Chico Hamilton Quintet in 1958, but by then he was ready for the big leagues. His associations with Charles Mingus and John Coltrane along with his series of dynamic recordings for Prestige gave him attention. His speech like solos on alto (which featured wide interval jumps), his pioneering of the bass clarinet as a solo instrument and his flute playing which was inspired by the sound of birds marked him as a major innovator and a true original. His playing was consistently emotional, often-jubilant and always full of passion.
Out To Lunch from 1964, his final studio album before his premature death at the age of 36, has long been considered one of his greatest statements. Not only is Dolphy heard at his most explorative and inventive on each of his instruments but he contributes five very original compositions including an unusual Thelonious Monk tribute ("Hat And Beard") and the eccentric "Straight Up And Down." Utilizing quite an all-star group that features Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and a teen aged Tony Williams, Dolphy maps out a future for jazz that he would never live to experience. One can hear bits of such future greats as Oliver Lake, Anthony Braxton, Bennie Maupin, David Murray and James Newton in Dolphy's playing and writing but, truth be told, there was only one Eric Dolphy. Out To Lunch is his last masterpiece.

 Shake Em On Down
Honeyboy Edwards
$24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Author Alex Haley stated that to be raised right in Mississippi meant to sit at the feet of your elders after Sunday dinner and hear stories about the ancestral past. There are precious few elder musicians still alive who were present at the birth of the blues in the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s. Sit and meet 84 year old David Honeyboy Edwards.
If you're thinking the music recorded by this octogenarian might sound like the rehashed stories of the elderly, guess again. There's nothing stale or feeble about the blues Honeyboy plays. Whether he played jukes in the 1930s, Maxwell Street in the 1940s, Houston and Memphis in the 1950s, or travels the globe today, Honeyboy continues to play the same original, first generation country blues he's always played. The only difference is here, he shakes 'em on down using today's cutting edge, DVD recording technology. Whether you listen or view Edwards, APO captured exactly what should happen when traditional meets contemporary. Those who know Honeyboy and the musical paths he has traveled would expect nothing less.
"A succession of grizzled old blues men have passed through the Blue Heaven Studio doors and all without exception have proved worthy of audiophile treatment be it on SACD or 180g LP. Edwards, a magical and quite vigorous guitarist, is another of those who has the Mississippi Delta running through their octogenarian veins...sends out an unmistakably authentic message to all those younger pretenders like the Eric Bibbs and Keb Mos who can't really hope to match these earthy and tightly grained life experiences which inform his every chord."

Herbie Mann At The Village Gate
Herbie Mann
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Herbie Mann established himself as jazz's most popular flutist for over a decade, and in doing so he also solidified the flute's rightful place in jazz. In 1962, his live album Herbie Mann at the Village Gate was his first major success, selling over half a million copies and making him a true superstar.
The first track on the LP, "Comin' Home Baby," placed in the Top 30 on the pop charts and became Mann's first big hit. Composer Ben Tucker plays second bass on that cut, and Mann's other sidemen include vibraphonist Hagood Hardy, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, drummer Rudy Collins, and Chief Bey and Ray Mantilla on percussion. Next are two great Gershwin songs. Mann's version of "Summertime" deserves a place in any collection. Last is the long "It Ain't Necessarily So," clocking in at almost 20-minutes. Mann's smart solo on the track wails and the crowd goes wild as the flute rises up from the rhythm section over and over.
Here it all is: a base of bebop with the Latin beat, but also Middle Eastern and African influences. There's funk on this album, there's cool, and Bossa Nova and samba. At this legendary moment in Herbie Mann's career, it all held together, and it just swings.

Recorded on June 24, 1958 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, these sessions (except for the bonus, “Once In A While” ) feature original compositions by Wilbur Harden (best known for his work with Yusef Lateef and John Coltrane) and hard-bop trombonist Curtis Fuller (best known for his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and appearance on the classic Blue Trane album). Coltrane had only just recorded “Blue Train” a year earlier and it is interesting to hear his style beginning to stretch out, as he makes his musical transition from strict hard bop to the groundbreaking style that would become legendary the following year on Giant Steps, making Coltrane one of the biggest names in jazz.

These recordings from March 13, 1958 see a 32-year-old John Coltrane playing an obscure date with little known jazz trumpeter/flugelhorn player, Wilbur Harden. These recordings made at the legendary Van Gelder studios also include Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums (while the 2 bonus tracks feature Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ali Jackson on bass, Howard Williams on piano, and Arthur Taylor on drums). The immensely talented, but equally obscure Harden appeared on several Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller records for Savoy as well as leading his own sessions in the late '50s, only to drop out of the jazz scene entirely by 1960 due to health problems (and finally pass away in 1969). In fact, Harden was a great composer and a pioneer on the flugelhorn and all the tracks on this album are Harden compositions. Coltrane, as history has shown, fared much better, and during this period was just on the cusp of super-stardom. He was busy playing around NYC with Thelonious Monk, and had recently rejoined the Miles Davis sextet, and it would not be long before Coltrane would begin leading his own sessions, soon becoming a household name in jazz. Features 2 bonus tracks previously not included on the original album.

Hank Mobley
$49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RMP LP - 2 LPs Sealed

Tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley's smooth tone and hard-swinging style helped define the Blue Note sound. He was considered such a valuable musician by Alfred Lion that Mobley led 25 Blue Note albums during 1955-70, also appearing as a sideman on many others. Part of the Philadelphia jazz scene by the late 1940s, Mobley moved up North in 1951 and worked with Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, and most significantly the original versions of the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet. He was also in the Miles Davis Quintet in 1961. However he will always be best remembered for his string of brilliant Blue Note recordings of which 1960's Roll Call stands at the top. Mobley is heard at his most fiery, matching wits with the young upstart Freddie Hubbard, who was already an incendiary force. Such song titles as "My Groove, Your Move" and "A Baptist Beat" lets one know that Mobley's originals are full of their brand of soul, and the roaring drum rolls of Art Blakey often set the entire session on fire.

 Swing, Swang, Swingin'
Jackie McLean
$49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RMP LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Prior to 1959, Jackie McLean was an important young Turk whose sharp tone and intense style on alto grew out of Charlie Parker yet were very much his own. Growing up in New York, his neighbors included such friends as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. By 1951 he was recording with Miles Davis and other associations in the 1950s included Charles Mingus and two years with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. But all of that was a prelude to his recording 21 brilliant, explorative and frequently explosive albums for Blue Note during 1959-67. While McLean became one of the first jazz musicians of his generation to stretch beyond hard bop into freer explorations inspired by Ornette Coleman, Swing, Swang, Swingin' is a straight ahead affair in which he mostly puts his stamp on standards. Few versions of "Let's Face The Music And Dance" and "I Love You" have ever had this much intensity and, when McLean digs into the ballad "What's New," he gives it a fiery passion that had never been heard before. Jackie McLean not only swings and swangs but he burns with the urgency, agony and ecstasy of the 1960s.

 True Blue
Tina Brooks
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Tina Brooks’ star burned with intense brightness before disappearing in the same tragic manner of too many other bop players of the time. Many jazz fans missed Tina Brooks’ recordings, the best of which were extraordinary by any measure. A soulful hard bop tenor-saxophonist with a sound of his own, Brooks (1932-74) had a brief life. Most of his better known recordings as a leader and sideman took place during a four year period from 1958-61. Unsung at the time, Brooks is now considered a true giant of the art. Brooks’ passionate and full sound and forward-looking style, along with his exceptional compositional gifts, combined to make him a powerful force. True Blue has become one of the most sought-after Blue Notes of all time. True Blue, along with the LP Back To The Tracks, contains most of Tina Brooks finest moments on record. Recorded in June of 1960, True Blue showcases Brooks along with the young firebrand trumpeter Freddie Hubbard in a set of highly inventive originals. Driven by an all-star rhythm section, True Blue is exhibit No. 1 for proof of Tina Brooks’ majestic sound and soulful writing prowess. For many aficionados of the Blue Note label, Tina Brooks’ True Blue is the very essence of the Blue Note sound and feel.

 Cool Struttin'
Sonny Clark
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Considered one of the great young pianists of the mid-to-late 1950s, Sonny Clark was practically the house pianist at Blue Note during 1957-62 before his premature death in 1963. He led seven albums for Blue Note during that time, appeared on many dates as a sideman, and recorded Cool Struttin, which is considered his main classic. Clark never recorded an unworthy chorus. His playing was full of joyful discoveries, constant swing, and an optimistic creativity that was indescribable and quite infectious. On Cool Struttin from 1958, Clark matches wits and inventive ideas with altoist Jackie McLean and trumpeter Art Farmer. Their four lengthy performances, which include Miles Davis Sippin At Bells and the exotic Deep Night, are filled with magical moments where the five musicians seem to think and create like one. The greatest jazz performances include moments like those heard on Cool Struttin , where the music has a life of its own beyond the individual players. The more one plays Cool Struttin , the more it is obvious that this is one of the truly essential Blue Note recordings.
Track Listing:
1. Cool Struttin'
2. Blue Minor
3. Sippin' at Bells
4. Deep Night

 Patterns In Jazz
Gil Melle
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Gil Melle was a 20th century renaissance man, a unique individual with wide interests and many talents. In his life he wrote over 125 film scores, was a pioneer in experimenting with electronic music, built computers and synthesizers, was a notable painter, piloted planes, restored automobiles and airplanes, and was a visual artist whose art was used on the cover of records by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk. Musically he never stood still or fit easily into any category. Early on Melle was a highly skilled baritone-saxophonist with his own sound and approach, performing at the Village Vanguard before he was even old enough to have a drivers license. Patterns In Jazz from 1956 is Gil Melle's definitive straight-ahead jazz recording. The music is colorful and adventurous, laidback but eminently approachable. Teamed in a quintet with trombonist Eddie Bert and guitarist Joe Cinderella, the emphasis is on low tones, bright colors and surprising patterns, whether on Melle’s originals or inventive rearrangements of “Moonlight In Vermont” and “Long Ago And Far Away”. Blue Note engineer Rudy Van Gelder seemed to have a special affinity for Melle’s music since all of the Melle sessions recorded in Van Gelder’s studio are sonically exceptional, including this one. The music on this rare gem is as unique, unusual and memorable as is Gil Melle himself.
Track Listing:
1. Set Break
2. Weird Valley
3. Arab Barber Blues
4. Nice Question
5. Moonlight in Vermont
6. Long Ago and Far Away

A giant of modern jazz, John Coltrane played in Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra, with Eddie Vinson's band and most notably with Miles Davis. He inspired and influenced many younger musicians with his distinctive and often adventurous playing. This quartet was formed in 1961.
When John Coltrane was asked, "Why a ballads album?", he said "Variety." Meaning a change of pace. And perhaps he wanted to apprise those who haven't discovered that he can be lyrical. John played the tunes straight, in the in-choruses, unless you count his lovely phrase endings as deviations from melody. When the development occurred, he made his musical points quickly and succinctly. I'd never heard him play this tightly. - Gene Lee (liner notes for Ballads)

Day Trip / Tokyo Day Trip
Pat Metheny
$36.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 3 LPs Sealed w/ 2 CDs

The Day Trip sessions were recorded at Manhattan’s Right Track studio in late October of 2005, sequenced and released into a 10-song set in the winter of 2008. Reviews from the daily U.S. press along the way have been a compendium of superlatives. The Philadelphia Inquirer declared, “Metheny shows why the trio is still relevant...There’s nowhere to hide, and the easy fluency of Metheny’s chops create a unique world. His energy and verve make it fun to follow where he goes.” The Boston Herald concurred, “The trio format brings out the best in guitar virtuoso Pat Metheny, going all the way back to his stir-causing 1975 debut with drummer Bob Moses and late bass legend Jaco Pastorius...But his current ensemble...is arguably his best yet.” And the Louisville Courier Journal summed up the nightly reaction to the trio’s sets, “It was a collaborative tour de force that earned a standing ovation.”
Tokyo Day Trip was originally released in May of 2008 as a 5-track EP recorded live in Tokyo with the Day Trip trio prior to their studio sessions. This 3-disc vinyl release combines the contents of the full-length album and the live EP in a 3-pocket deluxe gatefold package plus 2 CDs in baby jackets.
“The Pat Metheny Trio’s playing conveys a sense of proportion, substance and coherence, along with rigorous clarity; solid benchmarks for any great improvisers at the peak of their game.” – The New York Times

 Side By Side
Duke Ellington
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
There’s only one guy who can make an alto saxophone sound like this and superlative after superlative come to mind when you listen to these nine numbers, which were recorded at the close of the '50s. The idea of scaling down Duke Ellington’s band for jam-session-like numbers is absolutely genial because it offers soloists great opportunities to display their artistry. And these wind musicians are the best of the best, masters of their instruments. We have Roy Eldridge, who influenced the transition from swing to be-bop and a modern style of trumpet playing; Harry Edison, whose light and airy Basie-swing style cannot be denied; and Ben Webster, who amalgamates both the Count’s and the Duke’s style of swing. And then there is Johnny 'The Rabbit' Hodges, whose natural feeling for rhythm and gentle tone is brought to optimal expression within this concept.
"Squeeze Me" and "Stompy Jones" both stem from the '40s and are often performed, but in this session they have been rejuvenated in a masterly fashion. The standard "Let’s Fall In Love" demonstrates Lawrence Brown’s highly personal sound on the trombone and then goes on to spotlight Roy Eldridge and Johnny Hodges, both of whom prove that they are at the very zenith of their artistic prowess. "Ruint" and "Going Up" provide a showcase for Johnny Hodges, while "Just A Memory" focuses on the gentle, sometimes rather sentimental sound of Ben Webster.
Just as exceptional is the recording quality of this LP. Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the two sessions, the reissue offers a excellent opportunity to pay homage to the Verve recording engineers.
Track Listing:
1. Stompy Jones
2. Squeeze Me
3. Big Shoe
4. Going Up
5. Just A Memory
6. Let's Fall In Love
7. Ruint
8. Bend One

 Live In Paris
Frank Sinatra
$39.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Live In Paris is Frank Sinatra’s definitive concert album. Yes, there are many good ones—Sinatra at the Sands is also among the finest—but none better captures the essence of the singer’s voice, showmanship, and command than this 1962 session, which remained unreleased until 1994. Backed only by a sextet, the main focus here is on Sinatra’s peerless singing, phrasing, and style. Needless to say, the iconic crooner doesn’t disappoint.
It’s impossible to overstate the magnificence of the interpretations on this set. Looking for the ultimate renditions of “My Funny Valentine,” “In the Still of the Night,” “One for My Baby,” “Night and Day,” and “Ol’ Man River”? Search no more. Sinatra’s readings of these classics exceed his superb studio versions, as well as those that appear on other live albums. And consider the setlist: “The Lady is a Tramp,” “Come Fly With Me,” “Chicago,” “I Could Have Danced All Night.” Superb. And Sinatra is simply “on,” bringing a combination of swinging enthusiasm, reverent charm, and dignified emotion to standards. He triumphs with a powerful voice yet affected by the ravages of time and cigarettes.
Fans of Sinatra at the Sands should take note. Sinatra in Paris is much more intimate, with the scaled-down arrangements and small band allowing songs to bask in the glory of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ voice. Yes, Sinatra’s period onstage comments can seem crude. But they take nothing away from the sheer superiority of this recording.
Ever since its release, the lone drawback to Sinatra in Paris has been that of the inferior sound quality. Lament the shortcoming no more. Half-speed mastered from the original tapes and pressed onto two slabs of quiet 180-gram vinyl, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition 2-LP set lifts the veil on the music and allows it to soar with a richness, texture, openness, and presence that have until now gone missing. You will swoon over the improvements.

The pairing of Stan Getz and Chet Baker in 1958 in Chicago for an LP seemed like such a natural thing, both being golden boys enjoying their heydays with lyrically clean, brilliant solo styles. So it is odd that they teamed up in the studio only one other time, twenty-five years later, in their long careers. Which makes this a summit meeting to savor. Their playing on "I'll Remember April" is a study in contrasts: Getz's long lines against Baker's shorter phrases. Baker delivers his best solo here, keeping to a medium tempo, while Getz gives his all on his adaptation of "Cherokee," which he cranks up to a furious tempo. The proceedings are fueled throughout by a solid Chicago rhythm section rarely heard on Verve.

After establishing himself as a new star with Miles Davis quintet, the Thelonious Monk quartet, and various Prestige recordings with Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane made his debut as a leader with this LP. It was also the first album on any label to showcase what came to be known as the classic John Coltrane Quartet. That group, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, established itself in its four years of existence as one of the most influential ensembles in jazz, and one of the most popular as well. The quartet offers wonderful readings here of "The Inch Worm" and "Out Of This World" plus the tracks "Soul Eyes," "Tunji" and "Miles' Mode."

1965 was one of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations that were full of passion and fury. Just two months after recording A Love Supreme, Trane began recording an album of outside material heard here on The John Coltrane Quartet Plays. Features the classic quartet's stirring versions of the standards "Chim Chim Cheree" and "Nature Boy" along with the Coltrane originals "Brazilia" and "Song of Praise."

It's hard to believe that in 1956, a 26 year old Bill Evans was still virtually unknown and was still a year away from joining the celebrated Miles Davis Sextet. His debut recording as leader, New Jazz Conceptions introduced the trio format of piano, bass and drums that would become the jazz legend's standard for years to come. It's easy to hear in these highly individual trio and solo treatments a clear prophecy of the rich inventiveness that so deeply influenced Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and an entire generation of jazz pianists.

Throughout his long career as a bandleader, drummer Art Blakey very rarely played with big bands. This Bethlehem date was a one-shot affair, an opportunity for his powerful drumming to be heard propelling a 15-piece orchestra through a set of mostly new material. With arrangers Melba Liston and Al Cohn and such soloists as John Coltrane (who is also featured on two quintet numbers), trombonist Jimmy Cleveland and trumpeters Donald Byrd and Ray Copeland, this was a mighty band indeed!

 Shades Of Redd
Freddy Redd
$49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP 45RPM - 2LPs Sealed
|
Freddie Redd is a name that every jazz collector should know. During 1957-60, he recorded three memorable albums: San Francisco Suite (a trio date for Riverside), The Connection (his score for the famous play) and Shades Of Redd. While he has spent much of the time in obscurity since then, with occasional comebacks, Shades Of Redd is the obvious highpoint of the pianist-composer's recording career. Redd wrote the music specifically for the two mighty horn players featured with his quintet (altoist Jackie McLean and tenor-saxophonist Tina Brooks). While Redd's fine piano playing is an outgrowth of Bud Powell's, his writing style was always quite original and it clearly inspired the two contrasting saxophonists when they met up in 1960. Filled with the optimism of the era and looking forward to freer sounds but staying closely connected to swinging hard bop, this formerly rare gem hints at John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman while sounding very much like Freddie Redd. No jazz collection is complete without Shades Of Redd.

1. Thespian
2. Blues-Blues-Blues

 The Story Of Moondog
Moondog
$19.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Originally released on Prestige in 1957, this is the third LP from NYC street performer and avant-garde/minimalist composer Moondog. Perhaps the least accessible of his early releases, this album is made up of percussive jams, usually on instruments of his own creation, street sounds, poetry, and Far East melodies, despite opening with a swinging number that is, oddly, the most bizarre thing on the album. Another classic from Moondog reissued with its original Andy Warhol artwork.
