Ella Fitzgerald was in prime form during her 1960 tour of Europe and her Berlin concert, which opened the tour, won her critical acclaim and two Grammys (Best Female Vocal Performance (Single) and Best Vocal Performance (Album). It's most remembered for her hilariously inventive performance of "Mack the Knife," during which she forgot the lyrics and substituted her own without losing stride. Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes.

Coltrane Time John Coltrane & Cecil Taylor $24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Recorded in NYC on Oct 13, 1958, Coltrane Time was originally released as Hard Driving Jazz (mono version)/Stereo Drive (stereo version) and the then 29-year-old pianist Cecil Taylor (not John Coltrane) originally got top billing on this date. This session is interesting because it is the only one Taylor ever did with Coltrane, and considering Taylor’s status as one of the true founders of free jazz and Coltrane’s status as a jazz legend, it is a kind of missing link in the history of jazz. Here the group plays two originals (one by trumpet player Kenny Dorham and one by bass man Chuck Israels), while the other two tracks “Just Friends” and “Like Someone In Love” are standards, an interesting look into early Taylor, because by the early '60s he was playing almost exclusively original compositions. One of the most uncompromising and unique pianists in jazz, his difficult and percussive style has placed him in a class of his own, making him one of those artists you either love or hate…but love or hate him, there is no denying his contribution to jazz, and that his visionary music is still ahead of its time.

Caravan Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers $50.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Art Blakey led many editions of his Jazz Messengers over more than three decades, but a strong argument can be made that the Messengers of his Riverside period constituted his strongest unit. With Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller in the front line, with Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman as Blakey’s rhythm-section mates, its combination of musicianship and sheer swinging force has rarely been equaled in a small band. Caravan was the first of Blakey’s Riverside albums and endures as a living monument to his nonpareil drumming and leadership. His solo on the title tune is one of the finest recorded examples of Blakey’s unique melding of precision and power. Hubbard and Shorter contributed memorable compositions and, with Fuller and Walton, some of the greatest soloing of the 1960s.

In 1955, Louis Armstrong, along with vocalist Velma Middleton, got into the studio to pay tribute to the late Fats Waller. All the standards are here: "Honeysuckle Rose," "Squeeze Me," "Ain't Misbehavin," rendered in fine and mellow but gently, genially swinging fashion. Armstrong's trumpet is superb and his voice carries the good-time spirit of Waller's music.

Those familiar with the dense, percussive style that pianist McCoy Tyner has cultivated since the 1970s onwards may be surprised by what they hear on Inception. Like Reaching Fourth and Nights of Ballads and Blues, this album gives listeners the chance to hear what a very young Tyner sounded like outside the confines of the classic John Coltrane quartet of the early '60s; it reveals a lyrical approach to jazz piano that seems a far cry from Tyner's mature style. The choice of material is fairly evenly split between modal pieces like "Inception" and more harmonically involved tunes like "Speak Low," and the pianist's treatment of both demonstrates the extent to which his early work was rooted in bebop. Tyner had yet to develop the massive orchestral sound and highly distinctive vocabulary of modal licks that would mark his later style, and throughout this album he spins dizzyingly long and singing lines with an exquisitely light touch. The irresistible rush of forward momentum that he maintains on tracks like "Effendi" and "Blues for Gwen" is breathtaking, and there is an exuberant, almost athletic quality to much of his solo work. Bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones provide superb accompaniment throughout, and they lay a solid rhythmic foundation for Tyner's sparkling melodic flights. The pianist's penchant for drama, which asserts itself more strongly in his later work, is on brief display in the original ballad "Sunset"; his skills as an arranger, though evident on several tracks, are perhaps best illustrated by the intricate contrapuntal treatment of "There Is No Greater Love."

Out Of The Cool Gil Evans $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
This is the Gil Evans Orchestra that made its initial appearance at the Jazz Gallery in New York City toward the end of 1960. After having experimented with many different instrumentational formats, Gil has settled on this one as affording the most flexible outlet for his musical ideas. His taste for developments in all music is evidenced by his choice of material, his selection of personnel and by his compositional style. While some composer-arrangers in the jazz field tend to over-write in proportion to the time they spend and the techniques they learn, Evans seems to be headed in the opposite direction. Always aware of the importance of the improvised solo, his supporting material is never over-bearing.

Dear John C. Elvin Jones $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed PRE-ORDER
Elvin Jones was nearing the end of his long stay with John Coltrane when he led these sessions in 1965, and while the style is small-group post-bop, the music is very different from the thick textures of the Coltrane quartet. The core band is a trio with the Charlie Parker-influenced alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and the brilliant bassist Richard Davis. Mariano soars overhead on a series of lyrical standards, including "Everything Happens to Me" and "This Love of Mine." Roland Hanna joins the group for the first three selections, and Elvin's brother, Hank for the last four. Of the Hanna tracks, Charles Mingus's "Love Bird" stands out, while Hank Jones' crisp and inventive lines shine on the classic bop of "Anthropology" and Ellington's "Fantazm."

This legendary 1961 date has a friendly after-hours feel, with the Ellington crew in the right channel and the Basie band in the left. They both deliver the type of no-nonsense straight-ahead jazz that characterized the best of the big-band sound. The sparring here between soloists of both bands is a pure delight, especially the gentle conversations between the two leaders-pianists, who finish each other's thoughts as if all four hands were attached to one unified torso. Highlights include two engaging new Duke compositions, the blistering opener "Battle Royal" and the impulsive "Wild Man" and the closing Basie chestnut "Jumpin' at the Woodside."

For years Duke Ellington and tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins promised each other that they would one day find a way to collaborate on an album. Finally, in 1962, they recorded at the famed Rudy Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey, with a small personnel from the Ellington band. The event was marked by the combination of the guest tenor's distinctive and expansive tones, the rich ensemble sound, and of course, the extraordinary Ellington compositions. Duke Ellington covered the piano and brought with him Aaron Bell, brass; Lawrence Brown, trombone; Sam Woodyard, drums; and Ray Nance, cornet and violin. What became obvious almost immediately was the interplay of Hawkin's tenor and Harry Carney on alto saxophone and the alto voicing of Johnny Hodges. Highlights include the infectious calypso-like opening of "Limbo Jazz" that moves from solos by Hodges, Ray Nance and Lawrence Brown to a solo by Coleman Hawkins. Ellington's classic "Mood Indigo" is the perfect vehicle for Hawkins with his rich, resonant phrasing. "Wanderlust," which was first recorded in 1938, is revived here with Lawrence Brown and Ray Nance contributing to the blues mood of the piece. Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins features two legendary masters of jazz in a meeting that remains as masterful and thrilling as it did when it first took place in 1962.

Salt And Pepper Sonny Stitt And Paul Gonsalves $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed PRE-ORDER
One of the underrated gems of the 1960s, Salt And Pepper is an exciting matchup of tenors Sonny Stitt and Paul Gonsalves. It is very much a jam session set, with "Salt And Pepper" being a heated medium-tempo blues and the two competitive tenors stretching out on "S'posin'" and a lengthy "Perdido." The most memorable selection from the date is the one on which Stitt switches to alto, "Stardust." His beautiful playing behind Gonsalves' warm melody statement raises the session to the classic level. Also included on this consistently exciting release is a Sonny Stitt quartet set. Although Stitt (doubling on alto and tenor) recorded scores of quartet sessions, he sounds particularly inspired here, especially on such offbeat material as "Estralita," the Dixieland standard "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" and "My Mother's Eyes." Highly recommended to bebop and straight-ahead jazz fans.

Robert Pete Williams is the most avant-garde blues performer ever recorded. No punk rock band has ever matched the jagged, acerbic fury of the riffs Williams played 35 years ago. No rapper has approached his ability to evoke the torment of life in prison or bend language to cast an eerie spell over a chance encounter with a seductive woman. His blues was extremely original, sometimes even hard to understand. No other performer has captured the emotional effect of a desperate situation like he did. He had never been recorded when he was discovered in Angola Penitentiary in Louisiana, convicted of murder. Robert Pete probably has the most unique blues style of all bluesmen. Neither his guitar work nor his singing can be categorized into any established regional style such as East Coast, Mississippi Delta or Texas Blues. His music and lyrics are spontaneous and original. No major influence of other bluesmen can be found in his idiosyncratic, intensely personal performances. Blues scholar Pete Welding described his music as "tough, mean, and, above all, impassioned like the man himself."

Originally released in 1957 on the Bethlehem label, this obscure album shows Charles Mingus exploring new territory with his sextet while incorporating vocals into his work. On the opening track, "Scenes In The City," Mel Stewart performs a spoken word piece written by actor and playwright Lonne Elder III and the legendary Langston Hughes. The track is a snapshot of Harlem and NYC in the 1950s and for that alone this album stands out in the Mingus repertoire. Although the rest of the album features no spoken word or poetry, the performances here are top notch.

Although Milt Jackson, John Lewis and Kenny Clarke had been playing together since the mid-'40s as the rhythm section for the legendary Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, it was not until 1951, with the addition of Percy Heath, that they became the Modern Jazz Quartet. Experimenting with many styles, including bebop and Cool Jazz, they became perhaps best known for their formal presentation (in tuxedo) and choice of venues (concert halls), in a self-professed attempt to make jazz "serious," like classical music. Although their debut LP released in 1952 as a 10" is now a classic in jazz, the music still feels very immediate and features the earliest versions of their best known compositions. This version also features extra tracks from 1952-1954.

Miles 1954 Miles Davis $29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
After playing cool jazz for a few years, Miles Davis recorded an album called Walkin’ and “hard bop” was born. The year was 1954. Hard bop was still slower than bebop, but more driving than cool jazz. Where cool jazz is sometimes referred to as ‘chamber jazz’, hard bop brought in elements of R&B and gospel. The Walkin’ album is now considered to be one of Davis’ most important albums, with his all-star rhythm section playing behind him, Horace Silver on piano, and the one-two punch of Kenny Clarke on drums and Percy Heath on bass delivering the goods, as they always did. Heath and Clarke went on to do another important session that year with Davis, but in addition to Horace Silver on piano there was another genius of the ivories, Thelonious Monk. This, of course, was the infamous Christmas Eve session, which eventually became two albums, Bags’ Groove (based on Milt Jackson’s theme), and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants. These two albums are important because they are one of the few instances of Davis and Monk playing together. 1954 was also a significant year because it was Davis’ last year in relative obscurity, the following year he played, “Well You Needn’t” at the Newport Jazz Festival and the rest is history. All this happened in 1954.
The double 180g album Miles 1954 collects Davis' seminal releases from that prolific year into one package, combining all the tracks from the landmark albums Walkin', Bag's Groove and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants.

John Coltrane's 1964 release, Crescent brilliantly represents the musical values 'Trane' was reaching for at a very crucial time in the tenor legend's career. The album not only re-emphasizes Coltrane's expressive power as a composer, it further underlines the fact that his lyricism is as direct and as free of posturing as any in jazz history. In excellent support here are Jimmy Garrison on double bass, Elvin Jones on drums and McCoy Tyner on piano. Starry Starry Night Paul Clarvis And Liam Noble $34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
A charming little beauty, Starry Starry Night is a collection of cover versions of mainly familiar material by drummer Paul Clarvis and pianist Liam Noble, two characterful lights of the British jazz scene. The tunes range from classic standards like Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo," the Gershwins' "Embraceable You" and Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag," through to more recent treasures like Gillian Welch's "Dear Someone," Don Maclean's "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" and Moondog's "Paris." The album is as intimate and seductive as the source material and instrumentation promise, Clarvis and Noble are respectful of the composers' original intentions, rarely straying far from the top-lines or basic changes, but the duo bring fresh fascination to even the most well-worn item. Clarvis and Noble met, propitiously, when they both worked in the band put together to accompany composer and multi-instrumentalist Moondog at a London concert in the 1990s. They've since performed and recorded together frequently, and followed singular paths of their own. Clarvis leads the quirky world jazz and folk band Orquestra Mahatma, and has become an in-demand session drummer. A master technician who wears his virtuosity lightly, Clarvis is an unusually melodic drummer. Among his several involvements, Noble, who is equally at home in the lyric songbook tradition and the most uncharted free-improv, performs and records with folkish jazz singer/songwriter Christine Tobin and with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock. His playing on Starry Starry Night is rhapsodic and vivacious. Given the nature of the material, it might be expected that much of the interest on the album would derive from Noble's performances. But Clarvis, heard throughout on brushes, holds his own. He transposes the melody and rhythmic emphases of "Embraceable You" to the drum kit to create one of the highlights of the album. Others are Welch's "Dear Someone," an exquisite "last waltz" with a suggestion of menace in the wings; Ellington's "Mood Indigo," which Noble succeeds in making both spectral and lush; and Moondog's infectiously joyous "Paris." But these are highlights amongst highlights, and Starry Starry Night is a seamless stream of pleasure.

The Groundhogs, lead by British guitar hero Tony McPhee, worshipped in the church of American blues and R&B. Devotees of John Lee Hooker, the band name comes from one of Hookers songs, but they proved their chops in the mid sixties when Hooker selected them to back him on his British tours. However, while the Groundhogs played a derivative sound, they were a solid band in their own right, with an especially electrifying live presence, as proven in their Hoggin’ the Stage release. Originally released in 1984, this album is a collection of live recordings from 1971, in London and Leeds, during a Stones tour, where Mick Jagger personally requested the Groundhogs to perform, and a gig in Stockholm in 1976 shortly before they disbanded. If you missed them live during these years, here is your chance to bask in their glory.

Jazz In The Garden The Stanley Clarke Trio $24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
In a career that spans nearly four decades and includes gigs with Return to Forever, Rite of Strings and a variety of other solo and collaborative projects along the way, bassist Stanley Clarke, one of the most prominent voices in electric jazz and fusion, had seemingly covered every possible corner of the jazz landscape. But there was one avenue he had yet to explore. “I had never done an acoustic bass record, ever,” he says. “There’s a long list of people on whose records I’ve played acoustic bass, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson and many others, but I’d never done an acoustic jazz trio record of my own. So I wanted to record one that would just feature the piano and the acoustic bass in a way that you could really hear the bass.”
This long-overdue dream project becomes a reality with Jazz In The Garden. For his first straight-a-head acoustic jazz trio recording, Clarke assembles two brilliant collaborators at the top of their respective games: pianist Hiromi Uehara and drummer Lenny White. Each represents a distinctly different generational and cultural perspective, but given the range and versatility of both, the net effect is superb. Indeed, the synergy resulting from all three of these luminaries makes for one of the most refreshing Stanley Clarke recordings in recent years.

Moondog’s debut release, originally on the Prestige label, came out in 1956, long after he’d become a legendary New York City street performer. The blind Kansas native showcases his talent for the minimal and avant-garde here, with compositions driven by percussion and Japanese-inspired melodies, complimented by street sounds, recitations, and animal noises. Bizarre even for today’s standards, it’s a wonder this was released over a half-century ago. A brilliant debut.

This is the second Moondog LP, originally released on Prestige in 1956. It continues the NYC street performer’s exploration of minimalist composition and field recording, mixing percussion and sparse melodies with piano solos, street sounds, and monologues. Surprisingly accessible despite it’s avant-garde nature, bridging the gap between the familiar and the bizarre. Another all out masterwork from one of 20th century America’s most unique minds.

Naim Label stalwart, and virtuoso acoustic guitarist Antonio Forcione introduces his highly successful Ghetto Paradise on 180g virgin vinyl. Originally released in 1999, Ghetto Paradise was Forcione’s third studio album to be released on the Naim Label. The album has enjoyed the same rigorous quality control of an Abbey Road remaster for the vinyl edition (by Steve Rooke) which has been pressed at the legendary Portalspace Records in the UK.
Ghetto Paradise features the rhythmic midas touch of legendary world jazz percussionist Trilok Gurtu (who has worked with everybody from John McLaughlin to Neneh Cherry), Liberian/German fretless bass extraordinaire Kai Eckhardt (also of John McLaughlin Trio and well known for his work in the 1990s with Billy Cobham) and additional musical textures from saxophonists Roberto Manzin and Ed Jones, bassist Davide Mantovani and percussionist Bosco de Oliveira. Both visually and sonically, Ghetto Paradise was highly inspired by the sight and sounds of Antonio’s upbringing in the Italian hilltop town of Montecilfone and the importance of family oriented life; even the cover photograph is the work of Forcione’s late father, Michele Forcione. Recorded by Peter Williams at September Sounds, London and originally mastered by Julian Vereker.
“Ghetto Paradise is a sophisticated mixture of Antonio’s unique style, and an amazing world class rhythm section. All ten tracks on the album have been written and arranged by Antonio, a glowing testimony to his abilities as a composer and to the fact that Antonio’s already considerable talent is just getting better and better! This album is a true high-point for Antonio’s original and popular guitar playing.” - Notes from Original Press Release
