Pressed on 180-gram HQ vinyl, mastered from the original analog tapes. Features all original packaging.

Austin's Shearwater returns with their hugely ambitious followup to 2006's Palo Santo. Rook meditates on man's intersection with the natural world. Images of animals and landscapes act as metaphors for human relationships, a dark fairy tale encased in a cycle of songs.
Jonathan Meiburg's bold, soaring voice, occasionally falsetto, still anchors the songs, which broaden his pastoral pro-folk chaotic celestial mindbend into new realms. Beyond the continuing touchstones of late Talk Talk, Nico and John Cale, there are now allusions to Van Morrison and hints of Joni Mitchell. All this is set in a newly lush sonic gorgeousness of harp, strings and woodwinds atop the magnificent rhythm section of Thor Harris and Kim Burke. This LP version comes on 180g Vinyl in a Stoughton gatefold jacket and includes MP3s and a bonus track.

Mahalia Jackson's deep soulfulness, the passion of her Christian conviction and a belief in the power of her music led her to breakthrough in the U.S. where she appeared at Carnegie Hall and took her to Europe where she performed at the Vatican. It did not, however, though many had wished it so, lead her to jazz, blues and rock ’n’ roll. The public’s wide acceptance of her music proved her right in pursuing her own spiritual path first and foremost, although some critical listeners claimed to have spotted commercial undertones in her inimitable, highly expressive singing.
This live recording from the Newport Festival from 1958 cannot be accused of having been made for commercial reasons because it by no means reflects the common cliches of gospel singing. There is no rhythm group, no chorus and no clapping of hands so no sound is left unheard here. Mahalia’s soft, raucous voice retains its volume and warmth in moments of drama as well as in whispered passages. In this performance she is accompanied only by a piano or occasionally a Hammond organ with a cloud of chords. This is a pure, authentic musical experience that is free of style and trends, making it all the more meaningful and rare all these years later. Hear it in all its sonic glory here on this 180g Import LP!

Three famous and famous-sounding Ballets by Stravinsky, all conducted by Antal Dorati and packaged together here by Speakers Corner. This extensive 180g Import 3 LP Box Set also includes a slip case and deluxe 12 page booklet.
Stravinsky Ballets Dorati Included Works:
Mercury SR90216
Stravinsky: Petrouchka/Dorati/The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.
Petrushka was born of Stravinsky’s vision of a long-haired musician hammering indiscriminately at the piano keys and engaging in a furious contest with the orchestra answering with vehement protests and acoustic fisticuffs. As was the case with The Rite of Spring and The Firebird, Sergei Diaghilev and his Russian ballet had their share in ensuring that the “burlesque” in the four scenes would be suitable for the stage.
The clown-doll Petrushka revels in his spiteful teasing and pranks at the Shrovetide fair. The orchestra contributes swirling dance figures, blaring brass and scurrying strings to his high-spirited clownery but then the Moor enters and dances with the Ballerina, arousing jealousy in Petrushka. Although the clown-doll does not survive this bitter-sweet story, he triumphs at the end, his ghost mocking the crowd at the fair.
This highly inventive music combines folksong, popular music and the waltz, all bounded together by exhilating rhythms which are often taken to thunderous extremes. With its outstanding sound, this recording is a must-have in any Stravinsky collection.
Mercury SR90226
Stravinsky: The Firebird/Dorati/The London Symphony Orchestra.
The Firebird can almost be described as a work of fate, since it is not only the first of several ballets that Stravinsky wrote for Sergei Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes but also marks his international breakthrough as a composer. In comparison with his other earlier stage works, the ecstatic, sharply contoured Rite of Spring for example, The Firebird, with its melodic character, is a far gentler work altogether. There are unmistakable reminiscences of the musical language of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky as well as snatches of late-Romantic harmonies; all this lends the music the charm of the Russian tradition.
In his performance, Dorati chooses the golden mean in that he has his ensemble produce a highly colorful but by no means glaring sound. Thus the listener is given the opportunity to follow the development of the finely chiselled motifs which are so characteristic of this early composition. Happily, the chamber-music-like transparency is preserved even in the loud, more exposed passages and the sound leaves the loudspeakers with a sprightly, athletic tread.
Mercury SR90253
Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring/Dorati/The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.
While he was finishing the score of The Firebird, the idea came to Stravinsky for a pagan, ritual scenario. The background history of Le Sacre du printemps is well known: while the modernists praised the work, the conservative public thought they were being hoaxed. The reason for their irritation and the scandalous fiasco of the premiere is still audible to this day. Stravinsky carries the aggressive, hammering rhythms to the extreme, casting them in atonal harmonies which feed on the alternation between a red-hot and a mild mixture, as Stravinsky put it.
Dorati urges on his ensemble with robust tempi, and the orchestra is quick to respond to all the refinements of the tightly knit movement. It appears to cope effortlessly with the extremes of contrast and manages to amalgamate the rhythmic excesses with the tenderness of the numerous tiny motifs and figures which seem to sprout like flowers out of hard rock. The excellent recording technique captures both the extreme loudness and the finely pulsating tones, resulting in a sound in which no detail goes unheard. The listener can be sure that this Stravinsky deserves the rating "excellent" both for the interpretation and for the sound.
One of Stevie Wonder's best albums and most important works, Innervisions swings between delicate and airy ballads, Latin-influenced rhythms and synth-heavy funk-soul, all while addressing the themes of love, drugs, spirituality and the American dream. This masterpiece includes the smash hits "Too High," "Higher Ground" and "Living for the City." Now available on this 180g Import LP.
The Jam's second album, This Is The Modern World, was released in 1977 just after their In The City debut. Despite generally bad reviews from critics at the time, the album does have its shining moments including "Life From a Window" and the “The Modern World.” But it's also interesting as a piece of history for its lyrical content, which, as the album’s title promised, is a snapshot of a day in the life of the declining British Empire during the late 1970s. This 180g Import Vinyl version is housed in a gatefold cover and contains 8 bonus tracks from the BBC sessions.

Released in 1970, this was the third album from Os Mutantes, the geniuses of wacked out Brazilian psychedelic rock. They may have been trying to pay homage to their better known icons back in the States, but in doing so they created something that went beyond all that until, 30 years later, they became the ones that everyone was trying to imitate. This album, further testimony to their limitless creativity and considered by many to be their best, was recorded during the height of the Brazilian military regime’s crack down on artists, and fellow members of the Tropicalia movement, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil had already been sent into exile in the U.K. Available here on 180g Import LP.

Along with the Stooges, the New York Dolls were largely responsible for pioneering the sound and attitude of punk, and this, their self-titled debut, is one of the founding documents of post-'60s rock. Outrageous, shambolic and bursting with energy, the Dolls borrowed from the amped-up, bluesy swagger of the Rolling Stones, the pop confections of Phil Spector, and the campy theatrics that would flower with the glam movement, yet brought it all together with a visceral impact that recalled the jolt of early rock & roll. Released shortly after Stevie Wonder completed his 1972 tour with the Rolling Stones, Talking Book went on to reach #3 in the U.S. and it serves as the second release in what is widely regarded as his classic period. Despite the strong initial disapproval from label execs, Wonder broke completely from the Motown sound and philosophy here and the record's phenomenal success forced Motown to grant him complete artistic freedom over his work. Talking Book also helped prove to the music industry that R&B artists could find widespread appeal with rock audiences. Features the #1 pop and R&B staple, “Superstition.” Now available on this 180g Import LP housed in a gatefold jacket.

Rid of Me PJ Harvey $16.99

PJ Harvey’s second album, 1993’s Rid Of Me, is an art-punk classic that pushes the genre and the listener to extremes. Alternating between searing noise/feedback and sparse open spaces, Rid Of Me is truly an emotional experience. As usual, legendary producer Steve Albini maximizes every space and sound, working with that exacting, mechanical precision that he has become known for, the perfect complement to Harvey’s harsh, stark, disturbed songwriting. #52 on Pitchfork’s 'Top 100 Albums of the 1990s,' PJ Harvey’s best album is back in print here on 180g vinyl for the first time in years!

Keb' Mo's self-titled debut is an edgy, ambitious collection of gritty country blues. His gutsy guitar playing and impassioned vocals, as well as his surprisingly accomplished songwriting, make Keb' Mo' a debut to remember.

The 1970 self titled debut from Detroit's nastiest, most shredding funk-rock group. Arising from the ashes of George Clinton's Plainfield, New Jersey-led R&B group, The Parliments, Funkadelic formed in the late '60s and, in addition to Clinton, included the blazing guitar of Eddie Hazel, organist Mickey Atkins, rhythm guitarist Tawl Ross and drummer Tiki Fulwood. Though firmly rooted in funk and soul, Funkadelic incorporated a dark psychedelic element, influenced by Hendrix and Sly Stone, to create a sound that was unparalleled at the time and since. Sampled by everyone from DJ Shadow to Ice Cube, De La Soul and the Beastie Boys, Funkadelic still sounds fresh today and is the first solid example of George Clinton's eccentric genius.

Maggot Brain, released in 1971, is Funkadelic's all-out masterpiece. Absolutely no one working in soul and funk at the time had the scope, vision and, let's be honest, sheer lunacy to pull off the kind of record that George Clinton and his collaborators have made here. Eccentric funk jams are bookended with tracks like "Maggot Brain" and "Wars Of Armageddon," which are some of the heaviest tracks ever committed to tape. The title track and album opener are nothing short of mind-blowing. An essential classic and the deepest album to come out of the Parliament-Funkadelic canon.

Newman's second album from 1970 finds him much more comfortable performing his own material in the studio and as an artist. Opposite of his debut, the songs on this album were cut with a small combo (featuring Ry Cooder) allowing more of Newman's blusey vocal style. The songs are much stronger than his first album and 'Have You Seen My Baby', 'Let's Burn Down the Cornfield', 'Mama Told Me Not To Come' and 'Suzanne' particularly shine.

The Healer John Lee Hooker $33.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
The Healer was oddly a major mainstream breakthrough for John Lee Hooker. The album was one of the first to feature a wide array of guest stars, including Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos and Carlos Santana. The album immediately captured widespread media attention because of all the superstar musicians involved in its production and has to date been John Lee's most successful release. Recorded in analog and mixed to 1/4" 15ips analog tape, the sound is better than almost any other Hooker recording. Transferred from the original 1/4" analog tapes by Bernie Grundman using Classic's "all tube" cutting system, gives this release a warmth and comfort it has never had. If you're a John Lee Hooker fan then this a must! Great sound and classic Hooker guitar and vocal performances.

MIKE OLDFIELD's TUBULAR BELLS: A quintessential "studio production" in pop music lore, Mike Oldfield conceived an eclectic mix of both standard and odd instruments, along with classical and rock elements, to achieve a steadily building, layered texture, totally unheard of at the time. After being shopped and rejected at other labels, Richard Branson chose it as the first release for his Virgin Records in 1972. Originally tagged with the working title Opus 1, Oldfield, who had been playing and recording professional since his teens, oversaw the entire production and played most of the parts himself, eventually layering over thirty different instruments and sounds. Listeners had fun trying to identify each and remember the order they appeared, as the late Vivian Stanshall (Bonzo Dog Band) ceremoniously announced each as it joined the mix. The original LP eventually sold over 16 million copies and topped the UK charts for weeks. The eerie opening section was famously featured in the soundtrack to the motion-picture The Exorcist, winning the Grammy in 1974 for Best Instrumental Composition. The original master tapes were used to cut both the original issue and this reissue making the original issue hard to best. With Chris Bellman doing the mastering honors using Classic's "all tube"ť cutting system and being pressed on Classic's proprietary Super Vinyl Profile sheds new light on, and a slight nod to the Classic reissue of, this longstanding audiophile favorite.

All I Intended To Be Emmylou Harris $24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Includes Bonus CD!
On her third Nonesuch disc, Emmylou Harris assembles an extraordinary cast of veteran musicians and fellow singers, all of them longtime friends, for a set that indeed showcases this Nashville icon, and 2008 CMA Hall of Fame inductee, as all she has intended to be, a singularly expressive vocalist, a brilliant interpreter of other people’s songs and a graceful and confident songwriter. In particular, the album displays Harris’s ability to bring new life to songs that may have been overlooked, forgotten or lost along the way. Some of the most affecting material here may be the least well-known, though not for long: John Wesley Routh’s celtic/country “Shores Of White Sands” and trucker-poet Michael Germino’s heartrending story-song, “Broken Man’s Lament.” Harris has chosen these songs with conceptual care. Like much of the gently uplifting All I Intended To Be, the stories may be bittersweet, the characters may be downtrodden, but somehow a sense of redemption always vanquishes regret.
The shared history of all the artists involved deepens the feeling of hard-won wisdom that informs All I Intended To Be. Producer Brian Ahern was behind the boards for such early Harris classics as Elite Hotel, Pieces of the Sky and Blue Kentucky Girl. The players and guest stars are not only a veritable who’s-who from the worlds of country, bluegrass and folk, but they have each intersected with Harris throughout her four-decade career as a recording artist. They include Dolly Parton, singers Pam Rose and Maryann Kennedy, dobro player (and longtime Seldom Scene member) Mike Auldredge, keyboardists Glenn D. Hardin (of Harris’s Hot Band and Elvis Presley’s legendary TCB combo) and Bill Payne (of Little Feat). Two songs; the June Carter tribute, “How She Could Sing The Wildwood Flower” and the breathtakingly beautiful “Sailing Round the Room,” were co-written by and performed with Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Singer-songwriter Karen Brooks, whose own eighties-era version of “Shores of White Sands” was the inspiration and thematic jumping-off point for this entire album, contributes backing vocals throughout; Randy Sharp, Brooks’ singing partner, did the vocal arranging. (Harris won a 2005 Best Country Vocal Performance Grammy for her rendition of Sharp’s “The Connection.”)
Harris’s own songs, like the heartache ballad “Gold” and the elegiac “Not Enough,” blend seamlessly with work by Patty Griffin (“Moon Song”), Merle Haggard (“Kern River”) and Billy Joe Shaver (“Old Five and Dimers,” from which the album title is taken). Harris revives what is arguably Tracy Chapman’s most eloquent song, “Fast Car” notwithstanding, “All That You Have Is Your Soul,” a cautionary tale with a simple but profound prayer of a chorus. Displaying the maturity, elegance and ease that distinguished All The Road Running, her best-selling 2006 collaboration with Mark Knopfler, All That I Intended To Be is everything a listener and fan could hope for.

Back To The Country Johnny Shines & Snooky Pryor $20.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
In the early 1950's, Snooky Pryor and Johnny Shines recorded sides for the J.O.B. label that helped lay the groundwork for Chicago's electrified, small band blues. Reunited four decades later in the Texas hill country, they took the opposite approach with a set of acoustic, country blues that returned them to their roots in the Mississippi delta. Robert Johnson, the proud, tormented genius of Delta blues, is the spirit hovering over Back To The Country. In the forty years since Snooky and Johnny first recorded together, blues has undergone unlikely transformations, growing first into popular music, then disappearing almost entirely, before being revived several times. Back To The Country remains as close as you're likely to get to the source, the Delta. Released by Blind Pig in 1991, the recording went on to win the Living Blues "Country Blues Record Of the Year" award among many other accolades. Now availabe here on 180g Vinyl.
