M. Ward's Transfiguration of Vincent is nothing less than spectacular. From the buoyant, late-Beatlesque "Vincent O'Brien" to the dank, shuffling, south of the border groove on "Sad, Sad Song," the troubadour manages to capture a timeless folkiness and match it with a surreal and sparkling sense of nostalgia that clearly echoes Tom Waits. Recorded with the Old Joe Clarks as the backup band, Transfiguration is rooted firmly in old-time Americana, yet M. Ward's take on country and particularly his vocals somehow fit perfectly with Giant Sand, Sparklehorse, and California's surreal, pastoral psych-pop outfit Grandaddy (whose Jason Lytle contributed some field recordings). Just check M. Ward's stunning transformation of Bowie's "Let's Dance," which proves there's some deeply buried pop beneath these honest folk tunes. Transfiguration is a quiet record and might lose some listeners in it's sleepy summer melancholy, but M. Southern Lord proudly announces the reissue of the vinyl version of the only recordings by Thorrs’ Hammer, Dommedagsnatt. This beautiful release was pressed on 180g clear vinyl and packaged in a heavy gatefold sleeve with metallic silver embossing and printed innersleeve. Thorr's Hammer was formed in Ballard, Washington by Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley during winter of 1994-1995. Soon after, Runhild Gammelsæter, then 17-year-old Norwegian exchange student, joined the band as vocalist/lyricist. The band reached its final form when Jamie Sykes and James Hale joined. The band was active only for six weeks during which it played two gigs and recorded a demo and an EP entitled Dommedagsnatt. The band disbanded after Runhild's return to Oslo, Norway. It was not only the very first album released on Southern Lord it was the catalyst for the majority of the output from both Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson (sunn 0))), Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, etc.).

As you begin to listen to Dawes' debut album and especially songs like the bittersweet "That Western Skyline" and the patient "Love Is All I Am," you start to realize that this band isn't interested in the bells and whistles. The Los Angeles quartet, Taylor Goldsmith (vocals, guitar), Griffin Goldsmith (drums, vocals), Wylie Gelber (bass) and Tay Strathairn (piano, vocals) seem to get all their musicianship and expression across through the inherent nature of the instruments. Port O'Brien began as the bedroom recording project of Van Pierszalowski and Cambria Goodwin. As the songs grew legs and spread among friends, live performances became inevitable. Sprouting from the isolated coastal village of Cambria, CA, the band collected kindred spirits along the way and blossomed into a full band. The band released All We Could Do Was Sing in the summer of 2008 which captured the life Van and Cambria lived throughout their never-ending summers in Alaska. Van is a commercial fisherman, spending every summer on his father's fishing boat off the coast of Kodiak Island. Cambria is the head baker at the cannery in Larson Bay, supplying pastries, breads, and deserts for the entire seasonal fishing community. They're seasonal lives changed with the release of their first album however and their inspirations shifted from the desolation of Alaska to the experience of seeing the world.

As 2009 began, the band started to prepare songs for what was to become Threadbare. What started as a light-hearted and loose effort quickly turned into a dense, introspective work following the tragic loss of Cambria's younger brother. Recording in friend Jason Quever's living room studio in San Francisco, the songs were given a certain warmth and intimacy that couldn't be achieved in a larger space. The sense of comfort they found gave them the ability to fully realize the weight of the songs. "In the Meantime" explores the desire for contentment in tumultuous times. "High Without Hope" bookends the album, illuminating the emotion and sense of loss that was felt throughout the recording process.

The 1965 album Today! was the Beach Boys' eighth studio album and the first of three to be released that year. The album marked a major turning point for the band, and especially the exhausted Brian Wilson. It was around this time where Wilson gave up touring, and many consider this the beginning of his artistic maturation. The majority of Aladdin Sane, the follow-up to David Bowie's breakthrough The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, was culled from his 1972 U.S. tour and it finds Bowie still exploring science fiction styled alter-egos. Seminal alternative country-rock group Uncle Tupelo was formed in the Midwestern backwater of Belleville, Illinois, by high school friends Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy, and Mike Heldorn. Their marriage of punk rock animus with the simplicity of American roots music ignited a major movement heralding rock's return to traditional country origins. Heldorn had departed, Ken Coomer signed on, and in 1993 the band released one final album, Anodyne, widely considered their definitive work. Recorded live in an Austin studio, the album reinterprets country, rock, and folk idioms with the compelling vision that was Tupelo's own. After parting ways, members went on to found Wilco and Son Volt, but the brief and shining moment that was Uncle Tupelo will forever cast a long shadow on American roots rock.

Nowadays the Small Faces are criminally overlooked and often thought of as only the preamble to the Faces and, of course, Rod Stewart. At the time of their debut's original release back in 1966 however, they were one of the absolute greatest rock bands in the UK, with the Who and Rolling Stones being their only real competition. And lead vocalist Steve Marriott could sing circles around both Jagger and Daltrey. Reissued here in all its soul-influenced garage-rock glory is the Small Faces masterful debut.

Originally released in 1964 this is the debut album from Greenwich Village's strangest folk revivalists. Formed in 1930 as a trio of guitar and fiddle music, the original lineup was composed of Lonnie, Sam and Armenter Chatmon, the latter best known as Bo Carter, who was also a solo star of the period. The Mississippi Sheiks took their name from Rudolph Valentino's movie The Sheik and became extremely popular in the 1930s despite the fact that the famous country music artists of the day were almost all solo artists. Their first single, "Sittin' On Top of The World," was also their biggest success. It went on to become a standard country blues song covered by many artists of the caliber of Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Bob Dylan and Cream.

Between 1970 and 1972, Stephen Stills was busy playing with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and working on a series of solo albums. In addition to all this activity he led the super group that appears on this stunning release. Manassas finds Stills and company (Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor and Al Perkins among others) at the intersection of rock, folk, country and blues. Distinctive styles are noticeable song by song, yet it is the strength and credibility of the mixture that makes Manassas such a great overall experience. Leonard Cohen Live At The Isle of Wight 1970 is a fascinating and timely portrait of the artist as a young man, just three years into his recording career (though he was already a published poet and novelist for 15 years). As he mesmerizes the Isle Of Wight audience, Cohen intersperses a baker's dozen songs with tales both real and apocryphal, as well as a handful of his poems.

This double 180g vinyl LP edition of Live At The Isle of Wight 1970 represents the 77-minute concert set as performed by Cohen and his backup band: Bob Johnston (Cohen's Nashville-based Columbia A&R staff producer), and Nashville musicians Charlie Daniels (electric bass, fiddle), Ron Cornelius (lead guitar), and Elkin 'Bubba' Fowler (bass, banjo). They were joined by backup singers Corlynn Hanney, Susan Musmanno, and Donna Washburn. During the course of their European tour, which Cohen only agreed to undertake if Johnston (producer of Cohen's most recent LP, Songs From A Room) would manage him and organize the band, the group began to call themselves The Army, owing to the battles they were subjected to by audiences on the road.

All but three of the songs on Live At The Isle of Wight 1970 originated on Cohen's first two LPs, his debut Songs Of Leonard Cohen from 1967 ("So Long, Marianne," "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong," "The Stranger Song," "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye," "Suzanne"); and Songs From A Room from 1969 ("Bird On The Wire," "You Know Who I Am," "Tonight Will Be Fine," "The Partisan," "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy"). The three other songs "Diamonds In The Mine," "Sing Another Song Boys," and "Famous Blue Raincoat" were destined for Cohen's third album, 1971's Songs of Love and Hate.

Toronto group Little Girls (aka Josh McIntyre and Co.) announce their proper album debut, Concepts. The album's 11 tracks span from the very first Little Girls track ever written to brand new material. Concepts was recorded only at night in a home studio with most of the songs contributing to an ongoing theme of growing up.

It all started when McIntyre recorded a few songs in his home studio as a side project in early 2009. Seeking the unbiased opinions from friends and musical peers he anonymously posted the music on the internet under the name Little Girls, a name he believed least likely to reveal his identity. His influences come from the '80s no-wave post-punk scene, and the early '80s golden era of hip-hop. Equally influential are the late hip-hop artist J. Dilla, as well as Can, Joy Division, Wire and The Clean.

Originally released in 1998, Of Montreal’s second full-length features uncredited appearances by members of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Late B.P. Helium. The album was the first in which Of Montreal built characters around concepts. Although not as developed as later Of Montreal concept albums, The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy is infused with Vaudevillian elements that foreshadowed the group's break-out albums The Gay Parade and Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies. Originally released in 1997 (and never before released on vinyl) The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit’s Flower is not an EP but rather an eight-song mini-album that was released shortly after Of Montreal’s debut album. The highlight of the album is a cover of The Who’s “Disguises” and the album serves as a foundation from which other Of Montreal full-lengths would manifest themselves.

African American singer and guitar player who got his start playing on the streets of Memphis around the turn of the century. His enormous repertoire of early folk, blues, old time country and popular music, along with his influence on local musicians has made many point to him as the true father of Memphis blues. He began touring the South with a black face Medicine Show comedian in the 1910s where it is said he met and influenced Jimmie Rodgers, among others. He then moved to Tennessee where he began playing with musician Dan Sane with whom he made his first recordings as the Beale Street Sheiks for Paramount in 1927. Throughout this period Stokes recorded a number of sides for Paramount and Victor until his old time style began to lose popularity with the record buying public.

Leaning even more towards the jazz idiom than her previous release, Court and Spark, the collection features the introduction of the great Burundi on drums and is highlighted by the excellent guitar playing of frequent session collaborators Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. Court And Spark completed Joni Mitchell's transition from folk-singer to sophisticated rock auteur. In addition to her meticulously crafted melodies and evocative, image-rich lyrics, the songs here are breezy and immediately appealing. This is in part due to Tom Scott's L.A. Express, a sinuous jazz-based combo, but also to Mitchell's knack for pop hooks. The album's accessibility made it Mitchell's most commercially successful, yet the personal intensity and insight of her songwriting never wavers. Court And Spark confirmed her standing as one of the most important and subtle talents of the rock era.
