Sunn O))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled Monoliths & Dimensions. The album showcases the core guitar duo, Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the Sunn O))) sound to epic new levels. The band also collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang (notable for his work with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players on the album include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as a brass section: Steve Moore (of Earth), Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra in the 50s, John Coltrane’s African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock’s Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There’s also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman’s choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney.

The album is not “Sunn O))) with strings” or “metal meets orchestra” material. The band took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear, stating that the end product is “the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we’ve laid to tape” The album was recorded and mixed by Randall Dunn and Mell Dettmer.

1996’s 12 Golden Country Greats is the Pennsylvania duo’s 5th full-length but the first to stick to just one style which was, surprisingly enough, country music. That said, the title of the album is only half-correct as there’s actually only 10 songs here. Featuring some of Nashville’s greatest session musicians (including "Pig" Robbins, Charlie McCoy, and the Jordanaires), this is one of Ween’s finest records to date, with that classic Ween sense of humor filtered through a distinct countrypolitan sound.

On Cool Cat Blues in 1990 Ben Sidran assembled some of the coolest jazz cats around to record on an album with the famed Georgie Fame. Although 'Live At Last', the first official Black Sabbath live album, --featuring Ozzy before he left the band--was released in the UK in 1980, WB operatives in the US curiously ignored it and launched 1982's 'Live Evil'--with new singer Ronnie James dio--as the band's first official live album. Soon afterward Warner, now eager to put out a non-bootleg live performance with Osbourne on vocals released it in North America.

Originally released in 1970, Forca Bruta is an absolute classic from one of Brazil's most consistently great artists. Despite being embraced by the Tropicalia movement (with Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa both covering his songs) there is no psychedelic meandering to be found within these grooves, this set is pure samba-soul. Jorge Ben is backed here by the innovative Trio Mocotó who never overplay and allow his soulful vocal delivery and samba guitar to be the centerpieces.

Just Won't Burn, Susan Tedeschi's 1998 debut, alerted blues and rock fans that there was a new chick on the scene. She was very good looking, and she could wail – on vocals and guitar. What an incredible talent! People took serious notice, and a new, deserving star was born. Tedeschi can flat out play guitar, and her singing is accurate, passionate but perfectly restrained. Everything is proportionate on this album, a true masterpiece. Tedeschi turns in seven outstanding originals and four well-chosen covers.

Kenny Drew was an underrated master of bebop. A brilliant pianist who started with the example of Bud Powell and then developed his own sound within the style, in the '50s Drew worked with the likes of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Buddy DeFranco, Dinah Washington and Art Blakey. By 1960 when he recorded Undercurrent, Drew had already led ten albums of his own, mostly with duos and trios. Oddly enough he only had the opportunity to lead two albums in his life for Blue Note, an early effort from 1953 and the classic Undercurrent. Matched in a quintet with the young firebrand trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and the always-stimulating tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, the 32-year old pianist was ready to truly make his mark. All six compositions are his, and in his accompaniment of the passionate horn men and in his soulful solos, Drew shows that he was one of the major hard bop stylists. He would not make another album as a leader until 1973, nine years after he permanently moved to Europe, but Kenny Drew’s playing on Undercurrent, a superb and very well-recorded Blue Note album that is arguably his finest work, is timeless.

The Three Sounds were a very popular group in the late 1950s/early ‘60s and for good reason. Pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy always knew how to lay down an irresistible groove, they infused every song they played with a heavy dose of the blues and they could outswing any combo while never being stingy with the soul. The same could be said for altoist Lou Donaldson. Influenced by Charlie Parker but a bluesier player, Donaldson in the 1950s held his own on sessions with Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Smith while gaining a strong following with his series of Blue Note recordings. LD + 3 is a very special recording from 1959 featuring Donaldson and the Three Sounds really inspiring and pushing each other. Starting with a passionate version of “Three Little Words,” they dig into such bop classics as “Just Friends” and “Confirmation,” playing with plenty of heat. The mixture of bebop fury with soul makes this a true Blue Note milestone.

Nick Drake's final album, Pink Moon, is the record that made Drake the cult figure he remains today. Recorded over two late nights in November of 1971, the intimate album features a captivating and stirring Drake alone on vocals, acoustic guitar and piano. 1965 was one of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations that were full of passion and fury. Just two months after recording A Love Supreme, Trane began recording an album of outside material heard here on The John Coltrane Quartet Plays. Features the classic quartet's stirring versions of the standards "Chim Chim Cheree" and "Nature Boy" along with the Coltrane originals "Brazilia" and "Song of Praise."

Established from the ashes of alt-country legends Uncle Tupelo by Jeff Tweedy and other former members, Wilco was an apple that initially didn't fall too far from the tree. Their debut album, A.M. builds on the former group's brand of updated country-rock and emotionally charged songwriting, albeit with a more noticeable emphasis on the rock here. 1989's Mother's Milk is the album that broke the Red Hot Chili Peppers into the rock mainstream. Bob Marley's 1974 album Natty Dread is his first without former bandmates Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston and it captures the reggae legend's transition from a member of the Wailers to auteur, where his singing and writing were now front and center. The Wailers' rhythm section of bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett and drummer Carlton "Carlie" Barrett remains intact here and Marley adds a female vocal trio and additional instrumentation to flesh out the sound. The album kicks things off with the enduring classics "Lively Up Yourself" and "No Woman No Cry" and is then anchored with a strong set of material that includes "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)," "Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock)," "Natty Dread" and "Revolution."
