Many jazz fans missed Tina Brooks’ recordings, the best of which were extraordinary by any measure. A soulful hard bop tenor-saxophonist with a sound of his own, Brooks (1932-74) had a brief life. Most of his better known recordings as a leader and sideman took place during a four year period from 1958-61. Unsung at the time, Brooks is now considered a true giant of the art. Considered one of the great young pianists of the mid-to-late 1950s, Sonny Clark was practically the house pianist at Blue Note during 1957-62 before his premature death in 1963. He led seven albums for Blue Note during that time, appeared on many dates as a sideman, and recorded Cool Struttin, which is considered his main classic. Clark never recorded an unworthy chorus. His playing was full of joyful discoveries, constant swing, and an optimistic creativity that was indescribable and quite infectious. On Cool Struttin from 1958, Clark matches wits and inventive ideas with altoist Jackie McLean and trumpeter Art Farmer. Their four lengthy performances, which include Miles Davis Sippin At Bells and the exotic Deep Night, are filled with magical moments where the five musicians seem to think and create like one. The greatest jazz performances include moments like those heard on Cool Struttin , where the music has a life of its own beyond the individual players. The more one plays Cool Struttin , the more it is obvious that this is one of the truly essential Blue Note recordings.

Ben Harper's first official live album, Live From Mars was culled from two years worth of shows between 1998 and 2000 with no two songs taken from the same concert. The 25 song set surveys each of Harper's first four albums and adds in a couple of covers for good measure. There Will Be Light began as a series of rehearsals for Ben Harper's collaboration on a Blind Boys of Alabama record. Recorded in two sessions, the two acts ended up with an album of collaborative material for joint releases. These set of tunes, with seven Ben Harper originals written specifically for the sessions, the rest traditional gospel tunes and covers, showcase Harper and the Innocent Criminals alongside the Blind Boys of Alabama. The album kicks off with Harper's "Take My Hand," a funky gospel tune underscored by a call and response from the Blind Boys. "Wicked Man" is a Southern soul tune that has a Muscle Shoals groove and a beautiful vocal weave on the refrain. "Church House Steps" is pure gospel groove with a Hammond B3 and a duet between the Blind Boys' layered harmonies and Harper on the verses. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab has obtained the master tapes of this landmark album and for the first time What’s Going On will be released on 180g UTLRA ANALOG LP. As with all Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab releases, meticulous attention to detail is paid during the transfer process.

Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On was a landmark recording and is considered one of the greatest albums ever made. Rolling Stone named it Album Of The Year when it came out and, in 2003, it was ranked number 6, the highest for a non-rock album, in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. Originally, the title cut was recorded as a single, and Motown chief Berry Gordy refused to release it, citing that it was too personal and political. "What's Going On" became Motown's fastest-selling single at that point, going to the number one spot on the R&B charts for five weeks and number two for three weeks on the Pop listings, which lead Gordy to request a full album's worth of material.

“What's Going On”, the single, was recorded in June of 1970. The remainder of the album was recorded in March-May of 1971 and was released on May 21st of that year. It was produced entirely by Marvin Gaye.

One of the main weapons in sax legend Stanley Turrentine's arsenal was the knowledge that a real groove requires just the right amount of energy without hitting the listener over the head. That knowledge is put to practical use throughout Turrentine's first recording for CTI, Sugar. Aided by the subtly soulful organ of Butch Cornell and the smoldering sensuality of George Benson's guitar, Turrentine churns out solidly grooving tunes that employ blues-based economy. The fiery trumpet interjections of Freddie Hubbard keep things moving, but Turrentine's mastery of the mid-tempo groove is exemplified throughout, whether on the down-and-dirty jam "Sunshine Alley" or a soulful take on John Coltrane's "Impressions."

Sonny Rollins' mid-sixties experiment with bossa nova was completely different than was Stan Getz Jazz Samba. Rollins stayed true to his bop and avant garde roots, using bossa nova as a surgeon uses a scalpel, to dissect and deconstruct familiar melodies and turn them into something new. This hip reinterpretation of standards is Sonny's trademark, and in this album it's uncompromising. The whole album is interesting and highly original, but I will only comment on one cut, Rollin's deconstruction of a sentimental broadway ballad from Camelot. He takes the kitch out of this tune and turns it into a fierce meditation on the origins of jazz, the mystery of rhythm, and the fundamental particles of melody. Rollin's version of "If Ever I Would Leave You" is nothing less than this: one of the greatest tenor solos in the history of jazz.

This unique session contains five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne. Both "Take the 'A' Train" and "Cherokee" find the group at times playing two tempos at once and showing that they had heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, "Avalon," was previously available only on a sampler while "Me and Some Drums" features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet with the veteran tenor making his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. The set is rounded out by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises.

Ben Webster's final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the U.S. and would soon permanently move to Europe. Joining Webster on this fine quartet set is Hank Jones and Roger Kellaway on piano, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Osie Johnson. The real climax, however, is to be found in the harmonic layering of the three winds which lend the themes new appeal. The message was broadcasted many times until the death of Art Blakey, but the history of jazz would have been a great deal poorer without these milestone recordings on the Impulse label. Art Blakey certainly knew how to delight his audience with fire, originality, a wealth of ideas and great humor. All these attributes are applicable to the six titles on this album.

Coleman Hawkins recorded three sessions for Impulse Records in the early to mid '60's. Of the three, Today And Now is the most compelling and the unusual choice of repertoire is what sets the album apart. The Hawk plays with an abandon that is altogether effortless throughout and his versions of the traditional song "Go Li'l Liza" and the fairly obscure Quincy Jones ballad "Quintessence" are creatively rendered. His band consisting of pianist Tommy Flanagan, bass player Major Holley and drummer Eddie Locke, back the tenor king here with a similar imaginative approach. A largely impromptu session, each song develops and evolves with each chorus, and it would serve as one of Hawkins' last great records.

In 1955, Louis Armstrong, along with vocalist Velma Middleton, got into the studio to pay tribute to the late Fats Waller. All the standards are here: "Honeysuckle Rose," "Squeeze Me," "Ain't Misbehavin," rendered in fine and mellow but gently, genially swinging fashion. Those familiar with the dense, percussive style that pianist McCoy Tyner has cultivated since the 1970s onwards may be surprised by what they hear on Inception. Like Reaching Fourth and Nights of Ballads and Blues, this album gives listeners the chance to hear what a very young Tyner sounded like outside the confines of the classic John Coltrane quartet of the early '60s; it reveals a lyrical approach to jazz piano that seems a far cry from Tyner's mature style. The choice of material is fairly evenly split between modal pieces like "Inception" and more harmonically involved tunes like "Speak Low," and the pianist's treatment of both demonstrates the extent to which his early work was rooted in bebop. Tyner had yet to develop the massive orchestral sound and highly distinctive vocabulary of modal licks that would mark his later style, and throughout this album he spins dizzyingly long and singing lines with an exquisitely light touch. The irresistible rush of forward momentum that he maintains on tracks like "Effendi" and "Blues for Gwen" is breathtaking, and there is an exuberant, almost athletic quality to much of his solo work. Bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones provide superb accompaniment throughout, and they lay a solid rhythmic foundation for Tyner's sparkling melodic flights. The pianist's penchant for drama, which asserts itself more strongly in his later work, is on brief display in the original ballad "Sunset"; his skills as an arranger, though evident on several tracks, are perhaps best illustrated by the intricate contrapuntal treatment of "There Is No Greater Love."

This is the Gil Evans Orchestra that made its initial appearance at the Jazz Gallery in New York City toward the end of 1960. After having experimented with many different instrumentational formats, Gil has settled on this one as affording the most flexible outlet for his musical ideas. His taste for developments in all music is evidenced by his choice of material, his selection of personnel and by his compositional style. While some composer-arrangers in the jazz field tend to over-write in proportion to the time they spend and the techniques they learn, Evans seems to be headed in the opposite direction. Always aware of the importance of the improvised solo, his supporting material is never over-bearing.

Elvin Jones was nearing the end of his long stay with John Coltrane when he led these sessions in 1965, and while the style is small-group post-bop, the music is very different from the thick textures of the Coltrane quartet. The core band is a trio with the Charlie Parker-influenced alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and the brilliant bassist Richard Davis. Mariano soars overhead on a series of lyrical standards, including "Everything Happens to Me" and "This Love of Mine." Roland Hanna joins the group for the first three selections, and Elvin's brother, Hank for the last four. Of the Hanna tracks, Charles Mingus's "Love Bird" stands out, while Hank Jones' crisp and inventive lines shine on the classic bop of "Anthropology" and Ellington's "Fantazm."

Robert Pete Williams is the most avant-garde blues performer ever recorded. No punk rock band has ever matched the jagged, acerbic fury of the riffs Williams played 35 years ago. No rapper has approached his ability to evoke the torment of life in prison or bend language to cast an eerie spell over a chance encounter with a seductive woman. His blues was extremely original, sometimes even hard to understand. No other performer has captured the emotional effect of a desperate situation like he did. He had never been recorded when he was discovered in Angola Penitentiary in Louisiana, convicted of murder. Robert Pete probably has the most unique blues style of all bluesmen. One of the most enigmatic figures in pop music history, Scott Walker first saw massive success in England with his band The Walker Brothers in 1965. Not really brothers, nor were they British, the trio left Hollywood seeking fame in England, and they found it there for a time with their particular brand of orchestrated pop. Following the groups demise in 1967, Walker set out to pursue solo stardom in perhaps the most peculiar way possible, with over-the-top baroque pop songs owing more to his idol Jacques Brel, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra than they did to the Beatles or the Stones. This is his first solo LP from 1967 and features 3 of his own compositions along with covers of songs by Brel, Tim Hardin and the Brill Building team of Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.

Originally released in 1969, Scott 3 marked a big change in Scott Walker's approach to albums as, for the first time, the record is dominated by his original compositions. In fact, the only other songwriter that makes it onto the album is Walker's idol, Belgium's legendary singer/songwriter Jacques Brel. Scott 3 again features string heavy production courtesy of Wally Scott, though it occasionally moves out of pop ballad territory into a more cinematic feel influenced by Ennio Morricone among others.

Despite being the first of his solo albums not to reach the British Top 10, Scott 4 was perhaps Scott Walker's best and most ambitious. Originally released in 1969, the album was his first to feature only self-penned originals. The album was also unique in that it backed off a bit from the heavily string laden production of his past releases, allowing other sonic influences to shine through, from country to folk to soul. The lyrical content remains intense as Walker tackles everything from war to Stalinism to heartbreak with equal aplomb.

A founder member of the fabled Kaleidoscope, this versatile multi-instrumentalist left the band in 1968 to join the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Chris Darrow also helped form the Corvettes, an underrated country rock group who later backed Linda Ronstadt on a tour to promote her Hand Sown ... Home Grown album. Darrow then began a solo career with Artist Proof, and also found employment as a studio musician. He contributed to releases by John Stewart, John Fahey and others, as well as appearing on several Tamla/Motown Records sessions. A second album, Chris Darrow, reaffirmed his eclectic nature and featured cameos by Dolly Collins and Alan Stivell. The equally well-crafted Under My Own Disguise followed in 1974.

The Phantom Limb's sound is an indefinable blend of classic southern soul and country blues. They blend modern songwriting and rich acoustic music with powerful gospel-inflected vocals. Already comparisons are being made to Mavis Staples, Aretha Franklin and The Band. Their honest, melancholic, Bristolian edge creates one of the most original and compelling new propositions of recent years. The group is epitomised by the fantastically bold yet intimately soulful vocals of the 23-year old Yolanda Quarty who also provided vocals on half of Massive Attack’s forthcoming album, the majority of which was incidentally co-written and produced by Robot Club (Phantom Limb’s guitarist Stew Jackson and bassist Dan Brown). Phantom Limb's self-titled debut album was the brainchild of the Robot Club production team, whose recent writing/production credits also include Will Young, Skin (Skunk Anansie) and Fortune Drive. The album was recorded at their very own Robot Club Studios (Bristol) as well as Rockfields Studio (Monmouth) and Caveman Studios (Bristol). The album was mastered and cut for vinyl at Optimum Studios, Bristol by Shawn Joseph and Timothy Dennen.

The six-piece’s unique sound has made an instant ascension within the industry. In March of 2008 they played the famous SXSW in Austin, Texas, which led to countless festival offers including Glastonbury’s Jazz World Stage in June 2008 and a record deal with Naim Edge! In that year he was not only England's premier bluesman, but was also one of the first rock'n'roll stars in the mode of Elvis Presley. He had invented a new style of music called skiffle and every teenager in Britain was racing out to the record shops to snap up anything Lonnie recorded.

The Hazards of Love is the follow-up to the The Decemberists’ 2006 breakthrough, The Crane Wife, voted favorite album of the year by NPR listeners. With their fifth full-length album, the Portland-based quintet of Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query and John Moen solidifies its standing as one of the most innovative creative forces in music today. In an age when singles rule and the death of the album has been pronounced by many, The Decemberists have fashioned an anomaly: a record that demands to be listened to from start to finish and reveals more with each subsequent play. The 17-song suite, recorded with the band’s longtime producer, Tucker Martine, is rooted in ancient language and imagery, yet entirely modern and accessible. The Hazards of Love tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake. Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden deliver the lead vocals for the female characters, while My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock, and the Spinanes’ Rebecca Gates appear in supporting roles.

Buddy collects two great pieces of rock history: his 1958 debut album originally released as Buddy Holly as well as Nashville studio recordings Holly made in 1956 just before he became a superstar. Buddy Holly was the last album to be released in the music legend's lifetime and it features many of the songs for which he is best remembered including "Peggy Sue," "I'm Gonna Love You Too," "Everyday" and "Rave On." The earlier 1956 material found here is notably slower and much more country oriented highlighted by great versions of "That'll Be The Day" and the long lost rock & roll classic, "Rock Around With Ollie Vee."
