 El Chico
Chico Hamilton
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Jazz drummers from the West Coast, whether we are talking about Shelly Manne, Mel Lewis or Chuck Flores, had few opportunities to demonstrate the whole range of their art. And the Chico Hamilton formations of the Fifties were no exception. It was only with the mixture of jazz and Latin music as performed by the new Chico Hamilton Formation in 1965 that percussionists came into the limelight. The Hungarian Gabor Szabo and his electric guitar must surely have been the second great discovery for many jazz fans. Imbued with the adaptability and flexibility of his native land, he was even able to set his own hallmark in the field of Latin-American music. The titles on this LP are well balanced between compositions by Chico Hamilton himself and film and musical hits. “People”, for example, is from “Funny Girl” with Barbra Streisand. This is Chico Hamilton’s first album with Latin percussion and it is to his credit that he was able to get hold of one of the very best musicians as support, namely Willie Bobo.
“El Chico”, the boy who wanders the streets, offering his wares in a loud voice, is the title of the album. But shouting out the virtues of his wares was not for Chico Hamilton and so this album has remained a real hot tip. Luckily things have changed! Latin rhythms are all the rage these days, especially when played by Chico Hamilton and his septet and offered in such excellent quality as on this re-release.

On The Sunny Side Of The Street
Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Birds of a feather flock together! If this adage really held true, then the “grande dame” of swing and the pianist would surely not have waited until they were at the very peaks of their tremendous careers to make this recording. Third in the line-up of top musicians from the American jazz scene is Quincy Jones whose arrangements are uniquely suited to Ella’s unmatched voice and the Count’s big-band sound and which allow each artist’s individuality to shimmer through unhindered.
Classical evergreens such as Honeysuckle Rose, Tea for Two and Ain't Misbehavin’ are the topics of exciting musical conversation here; these and other favourite melodies are enhanced with the gentle sound of the saxophone and razor-sharp screams on the trumpet, lending them a quite new aspect. By no means neglecting the proverbial striking force and precision of the Basie style, the arrangements offer plenty of scope for Ella’s dusky voice and her highly popular “ba-ba-lu-ba” sections.
Fortunately, the sound on this VERVE recording is situated “on the sunny side of the street”. The immediate presence of the vocal part, a fresh instrumental timbre and a pleasantly dry playhouse atmosphere all guarantee sheer delight for listeners to this collector’s item.

 Ella & Louis
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
The very fact that America’s biggest jazz label called one of their albums quite simply “Ella and Louis” indicates that we are talking about something very special here. And surely enough has been said – “Satchmo” and the grande dame of jazz certainly need no further introduction. In the '50s just the mere mention of their forenames was enough to light up the eyes of jazz fans. A glance at the tracklist reveals that tranquility rules the day: wild stomps and improvised scats will neither be sought nor missed. Of prime importance to the jazz-ballad is a feeling of “letting oneself drift” in the inspiration which gushes forth from the minds of genial American songwriters.
This is no contest – for the artists all pursue a common goal with extreme sensitiveness. The background combo, made up of first-class musicians and led by Oscar Peterson, performs with great concentration and almost obtrusive unobtrusiveness. VERVE’s highly successful producer Norman Granz decided quite deliberately to make the recording in the studio instead of at a live session. And success has verified his judgement, for such vocal jazz knows only gentle tones – but the result is all the more intensive for that.

 XO
Elliott Smith
$19.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Following the success and acclaim of his two releases on the Kill Rock Stars label, as well an Oscar nomination for the use of his song Miss Misery in the film Good Will Hunting, the late Elliott Smith signed with Dreamworks for the 1998 release of XO. With a major label budget for this, his fourth full length album, Smith was able to craft a fully realized pop masterpiece, fulfilling the promise of previous releases. Though firmly in the McCartney/Lennon/Rundgren/Davies school of songwriting Elliott Smith was nothing if not an original. Possibly his best record.

 Figure 8
Elliott Smith

His second release for the Dreamworks label, and fifth overall, Figure 8 is a lush and beautiful melancholy collection of pop songs. Gone is the intimate lo-fi feel of his Kill Rock Stars albums, replaced by intricate arrangements and orchestration. One gets the feeling that the sound of his earlier work was not by choice but by economic necessity and Elliott Smith was now, with a major label budget and backing, able to establish himself as a pop craftsman on par with Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney.

 Irving Berlin Songbook (2LP)
Ella Fitzgerald
$59.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
It was a long road for the composer Irving Berlin: beginning with 'Alexander’s Ragtime Band' in 1911, leading him on via 'Cheek To Cheek', right up to 'Change Partners' in 1938 - it was one success after another. The once-heard, never-forgotten tunes found in the musicals 'Follow The Fleet' and 'Puttin’ On The Ritz' were simple little songs - taken from life itself. And Ella’s interpretations are just as simple and straightforward, while the arranger Paul Weston held back his soloists too. With the Irving Berlin Songbook, an album has been created in which the small variations on well-known melodies (such as 'Cheek To Cheek' and 'How Deep Is The Ocean') can be truly appreciated, and magical moments or lesser known songs discovered or hummed along to ('I Used To Be Color Blind' and 'Lazy'). But this is also an album which mirrors the history of the Broadway musical in the 1920s and ’30s, the majority of which were written by the Gershwins, Jerome Kern, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and a good many of them by Irving Berlin. Nobody knew the tricks of the entertainment trade better than Ella: not only a brilliant scat singer, she was also the very best interpreter of the ballad. And should you need any proof of this, just listen to any song contained within this Songbook (my tip: 'Reaction For The Moon' and 'Always'). Ella’s capability of giving a new interpretation to Irving Berlin’s songs doesn’t end there, however. The 'Song Is Ended' and 'Heat Wave' are rare jewels of swing against which singers right up to the present day are measured. Just why should you buy this particular Songbook? There are two simple reasons: to listen to Ella’s voice and her immense variety is sheer pleasure, and Irving Berlin’s songs offer pure entertainment at the highest level.

Rodgers & Hart Songbook 2 LP
Ella Fitzgerald
$64.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
It’s something everyone has experienced: whether at one of the great jazz festivals in Berlin, Montreux or Paris, or in a small, provincial jazz club which exudes the charm of a dingy jazz cavern in the Fifties - you sit, listen, and then rack your brain to remember the name of the number which the young jazz musician is playing with all his heart. Just what was the name?
Put the 'Ella Sings The Rodgers And Hart Song Book' album on your turntable and you’re guaranteed to recall “My Funny Valentine”, “Blue Moon” and “It Never Entered My Mind”. All these and many more excellent ballads flowed out of the pens of the songwriting team - and each and every one of them is a winner.
But don’t make the mistake of associating merely scat singing taken at a cracking pace with the most famous (the name ‘Ella’ is a fully adequate epithet) and the BEST (for that’s what she is and she will remain so!) jazz vocalist between 1930 and 1995: this album more than demonstrates her excellent powers of expression and her brilliant modulations. The ballads are done true justice in these sensitive, almost subdued arrangements by the West Coast film music expert Buddy Bregman, which put Ella’s voice, Richard Rodgers’ melodies and Lorenz Hart’s lyrics in the limelight. With the exception of “Blue Moon”, all the numbers are themes taken from Broadway musicals, virtually none of which will ever have been seen by us, but whose evergreen melodies will remain in our memories for ever.
What is more, there is a special treat for us in store on this album: three titles are now appearing on stereo-LP for the very first time. A further milestone along the road of jazz singing is at last re-released with this song book: it constitutes an important documentation of Ella’s musical path which began with the children’s song “A-tisket, a-tasket”.

Track Listing:
1. A Ship Without Sail
2. Bewitched
3. Blue Moon

8. I Didn't Know What Time It Was
9. Isn't It Romantic

 VS: The Definitive Edition
Mission Of Burma
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs + DVD Sealed
|
Mission of Burma's second and final studio album Vs. was released in the fall of 1982, just months before they broke up when the band was at the pinnacle of their songwriting and performing skills. Vs. is a strange and exciting record, full of depth and harmonic color. Unlike its predecessor, it begins slowly, with a fever dream of guitar workouts, drone and tremelo, in Circles, Trem Two and Dead Pool. The album pivots around the central track, Mica, perhaps the band's finest moment about a woman's descent into unreality and madness. At the end, Vs. expands with the triumphant melodic anthems The Ballad Of Johnny Burma and That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate.
This Definitive Edition of Vs. now on a Deluxe Gatefold 180g Double LP looks and sounds better than ever and it includes four bonus tracks (previously on the Ryko CD); tracks 13-15 were unreleased studio outtakes from the Vs. sessions, and 16 was the B-side of the 1982 ôTrem Twoö 7″ single.

Elvis Presley
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed

In order to comfort all his fans during his forced absence, the record bosses produced an album with a smartly-uniformed Elvis on the cover, smiling widely to let his faithful followers know that he’d be back soon. There was a special 1960 calendar on the back of this gatefold jacket, so that his fans could count off the days until his return. What made this a classic is that most of the tracks were the original Sun Records singles and tracks from his RCA EP’s- all among his best sides. Which takes us back full circle to the date. What better way is there to celebrate the 50th birthday of rock-’n’-roll than with this early album by its 'King'?

Skip James
$34.99
180 Gram audiophile virgin vinyl LP - Sealed

Nehemiah 'Skip' James is one of the Delta Blues giants and one of the genre's earliest recording artists. He was born in Bentonia, Mississippi in 1902 and began his recording career in 1931 for the Paramount Records label – the same Grafton, Wisconsin-based company that cut the ultra-famous sides by Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, Blind Blake and pretty much every other pre-war blues artist that's still remembered today.
After that Paramount session and its resulting 26 sides, James went relatively unheard for the next 33 years. He followed in his father's footsteps and became a Baptist minister. But in 1964, three record collectors went in search of Skip James and found him. The three booked him at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, and James' comeback was born. Thank God for that! This record was recorded shortly after the rediscovery. Amazingly, James' musicianship was still utterly remarkable, even though his health had begun to fail and he would die just five years later. What sets Skip James' talent apart, aside from his equal mastery of both the guitar and piano, is his haunting falsetto singing. You've got to hear it for yourself. This record allows us a glimpse into a long-gone world.

After being rediscovered by the folk-blues community in the early '60s, Son House rose to the occasion and recorded this magnificent set of performances. Allowed to stretch out past the shorter running time of the original 78s, House turns in wonderful, steaming performances of some of his best-known material. On some tracks, House is supplemented by folk-blues researcher/musician Alan Wilson, who would later become a member of the blues-rock group Canned Heat and here plays some nice second guitar and harmonica on several cuts.

 Couldn't Stand The Weather
Stevie Ray Vaughan
$44.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Stevie Ray and Double Trouble's follow up to Texas Flood, Couldn't Stand the Weather further explores Vaughan's ambitious goal of modernizing electric blues. Stevie is heard here at his absolute prime; playing with passion and conviction and the tracklist is just stellar highlighted by his rousing cover of Hendrix's classic 'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)'. 2LP 180g Set including 4 bonus tracks!
With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the ‘80’s. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters and rock & roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre. Vaughan bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late '60s. For the next seven years, Stevie Ray was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence in blues and American rock & roll.
From 1978 and for the next few years, Stevie Ray Vaughan and 'Double Trouble' played the Austin area, becoming one of the most popular bands in Texas. In 1982, the band played the Montreux Festival and their performance caught the attention of David Bowie and Jackson Browne. After 'Double Trouble's' performance, Bowie asked Vaughan to play on his forthcoming album, while Browne offered the group free recording time at his Los Angeles studio, 'Downtown'; both offers were accepted. Stevie Ray laid down the lead guitar tracks for what became Bowie's 'Let's Dance' album in late 1982. Shortly afterward, John Hammond, Sr. landed Vaughan and 'Double Trouble' a record contract with Epic, and the band recorded its debut album, 'Texas Flood', in less than a week at 'Downtown'. Bowie offered Vaughan the lead guitarist role for his 1983 stadium tour, but he turned him down, preferring to play with 'Double Trouble'. Vaughan and 'Double Trouble' set off on a successful tour and quickly recorded their second album, 'Couldn't Stand The Weather', which was released in May of 1984. The album was more successful than its predecessor, reaching number 31 on the charts; by the end of 1985, the album went gold. From the blistering licks of 'Scuttle Buttin' to the bitchin blues of 'Tin Pan Alley' and the cover classic that is 'Voodoo Chile' SRV really delivers on this 1984 recording.
This is classic Stevie Ray Vaughan, now lovingly remastered from the analog tapes by the maestro cutting engineer, Ray Staff, in his Alchemy Mastering Soho studio, with five more tracks not on the original vinyl LP.

T-Bone Walker is one of the all-time greats, an innovator and significant influence on just about every blues guitarist who followed. But his musical legacy is also incredibly enjoyable, full of humor as well as invention. A man who played the blues with flair, sophistication, technical brilliance and a sense of humor. Walker pioneered the electric guitar sound that helped create the blues and thus influenced all popular music that followed. He played one of the first electric guitars in the mid-'30s, recording with it in 1939. His single-string solos influenced blues players like B.B. King and such rockers as Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

 Strangers Almanac
Whiskeytown
$24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Whiskeytown, a highly acclaimed founding band of the alt-country/No Depression scene, launched the solo career of four-time Grammy®-nominated singer-songwriter-guitarist Ryan Adams as well as that of fiddler-singer-songwriter Caitlin Cary. Now the group’s 1997 major label debut album, an overlooked gem from a band considered one of the genre’s most promising, is being released for the first time ever on vinyl.
1997's Strangers Almanac was Whiskeytown's major-label debut and the album that first introduced Ryan Adams to a wide audience, but at the same time it marked the beginning of the end for the group. When Whiskeytown went into the studio to record Strangers Almanac, the band had undergone the first of what would become a long line of personnel shakeups, and in addition to Ryan Adams, the only proper members of the group on hand for the sessions were violinist and vocalist Caitlin Cary and guitarist Phil Wandscher; session musicians filled out the lineup, while the new rhythm section, Jeff Rice (bass) and Steve Terry (drums), was hired only two weeks before recording began. Despite its chaotic creation, Strangers Almanac sounds stronger and more cohesive than its ragged but forceful indie predecessor, Faithless Street, and there's a deeper resonance in Ryan Adams' tales of wasted nights and wasted lives, such as Inn Town, Losering, and Dancing with the Women at the Bar. Strangers Almanac doesn't rock as hard as Whiskeytown's earlier material, but when the guitars kick into high gear on Yesterday's News and Waiting to Derail, it reveals just how good a match Ryan Adams and Wandscher were, and Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight and 16 Days are as strong and moving as their country gestures got. Strangers Almanac captures Whiskeytown when they still had some business calling themselves a band rather than just Ryan Adams' backing musicians, and the glorious world-weariness of its best moments makes it a far more satisfying listen than most of what would follow once Ryan Adams struck out on his own.

Ataulfo Argenta

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed

This re-presssing of the legendary FFSS version features great Spanish music played with precision and lucidity by Ataulfo Argena. One of the best recordings ever made. Sonically, this record – made in 1956/57 – is one of the best ever produced by DECCA. The listener is literally swept off his or her feet. To better enjoy this tremendous experience, we would advise listeners to put their feet up, relax, and listen with rapt attention. A “Do-not-disturb” sign on the door is to be recommended. The tremendous sound emanating from the loudspeakers immediately conveys the rousing nature of the music. Conducted by Ataúlfo Argenta, the London Symphony Orchestra plays with a rare vitality, pure enjoyment, precision and lucidity. This is a carefully chosen medley of Spanish music which, interestingly enough, was mostly written by non-Spanish composers. All in all, this has become a legendary recording, which caused quite a stir even in its mono version. The FFSS version ranks among the very best recordings ever issued.

 The Three-Cornered Hat
Ernest Ansermet
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
The very fact that Manuel de Falla composed his ballet El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) for the ambitious impresario Serge Diaghilev and his epoch-making Ballets Russes indicates the historical importance of this work. Although the Impressionistic character of the musical language reflects his studies with Debussy, the composer never once renounces his native origins. Overflowing with the thrilling rhythms and electrifying melodies of Spanish folkmusic, this work achieved worldwide popularity virtually overnight.
As so often before in this genre, the Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet proves once again in this DECCA recording that he is a power to be reckoned with. The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande executes the slightest nuance, the most exquisite of figures and gentlest lyrical tone with meticulous precision. Powerful rolls of thunder, the click of castanets, lively rhythms and rich sonority conjure up a picture of fiery Spanish temperament so tangibly before our eyes that any comment on the recording quality appears almost superfluous. In a nutshell: this record is, quite simply, incredibly good

 Faure - Pelleas et Melisande
Ernest Ansermet
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Debussy, Fauré, Schoenberg and Sibelius were all under the spell of the Belgian symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck and set his play Pelléas et Mélisande to music in one form or another. Fauré’s incidental music was the second work, following Debussy’s opera, to be based on the tragic story of love, jealousy, death, and forgiveness. Fauré’s veiled, ambiguous harmonies and compositional style reflect in a quite amazing fashion the atmosphere at which Maeterlinck so often only hinted. The Suite op. 80 which Fauré himself put together and orchestrated is quite rightly called his symphonic masterwork. Here, as again in the Prelude to his only complete opera, Pénélope, one can experience the ecstatic, romantic, and – at the same time – refined and delicately woven musical language which often appears somewhat melancholy and veiled. His arching melodies, frequently inspired by Gregorian chant, are tinged with an archaic charm which is also to be found (though less obviously) in his suite Masques et bergamasques. Ernest Ansermet is in his element here conducting the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande who follow their founder’s every wish and let the colours on the composer’s palette shine out with delicate brilliance. Debussy’s Petite Suite is a fitting work to complement Fauré’s little-known symphonic aspect. This recording is like a precious gem and deserves a place on every collector’s shelf.

The Pious Bird of Good Omen
Fleetwood Mac
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Fleetwood Mac's first compilation is a hodgepodge of tracks from their first two albums, singles and sessions where Peter, John and Mick backed up Chicago piano legend Eddie Boyd. Standout tracks include The Sun Is Shining, Jigsaw Puzzle Blues, Albatross and Black Magic Woman.
With songs taken from Fleetwood Mac and Mr. Wonderful, Pious Bird of Good Omen serves as a worthy 12-track compilation of the band's early Peter Green days. Climbing to number 18 in the U.K., the album managed to catapult Fleetwood Mac's version of Little Willie John's Need Your Love So Bad into the English charts for the third time, resting at number 42. The album itself was released by Blue Horizon after the group's contract with them had expired, making it one of the best routes in which to explore their mingling of Chicago and British blues. Albatross, Black Magic Woman, and I Believe My Time Ain't Long are timeless Fleetwood Mac standards, representing some of the band's best pre-Rumours work. Anyone who isn't familiar with Fleetwood Mac's origins should use Pious Bird of Good Omen as a starting point in investigating the first wave of the band, which will almost certainly lead to further interests into albums such as English Rose, Then Play On, and Kiln House, and then into later albums like Bare Trees and Penguin, which reveal subtle yet effective changes in the band's blues sound. But even aside from its purpose as a collection, Pious Bird of Good Omen makes for a terrific laid-back stroll through some of the best British blues music ever made.

 Wagner for Band
Frederick Fennell
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
As is always the case with Wagner’s music and solemn, noble or divine happenings take place on the stage, the large brass instruments in orchestra pits all over the world are called upon to give their utmost. The idea of having a wind ensemble to perform the most magnificent-sounding passages is, therefore, not as far-fetched as it might seem. Wagner too appreciated the colourful sound which a wind-and-brass ensemble can produce, as is proved by the fact that in his 'Ring' cycle he introduced a complete 'wind band' consisting of 33 players.
Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble treat the arrangements with such care and respect that no one will miss the delightfully warm carpet of sound of the strings in the original version. Where lyrical sentiment is called for, the high woodwinds play airily and precisely and are supported by a sonorous, organ-like base which gradually builds up to dramatic musical exuberance. Even when the highest dynamic range has been reached, no particular register is dominantly in the foreground but blends in to produce powerful, harmonious surges of sound. These arrangements bring together dynamic agility, complete transparency and musicality. One really cannot wish for more Wagner than is offered on this LP.

 Winds in Hi-Fi (Mercury)
Frederick Fennell
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

The Eastman Wind Ensemble is a model of a modern wind band and thanks to its flexible instrumental formation it has no problem with performing both older and more modern scores. Thus it is no wonder that four highly different composers are united in this album. Percy Grainger’s gripping arrangements of English folk melodies are happily found alongside Roger’s Japanese Dances and Milhaud’s wanderings through French provinces. And as an encore there are late-Romantic harmonies penned by the young Richard Strauss. Because all these works are original compositions, 'Winds in HiFi' is an excellent introduction to music for wind instruments.

 Drummer Man
Gene Krupa
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
It is highly likely that many of the twelve tracks on this LP will seem familiar. In the 30s and 40s, when Gene Krupa broke away from Benny Goodman and established his own big band, these numbers were heard daily. Indeed, many of them were released by Columbia Records on 78rpm shellac discs. When Krupa signed a lucrative contract which was offered to him by Norman Granz from the Verve jazz label in the mid-Fifties and went on tour with Jazz At The Philharmonics, the idea was born to re-record the numbers using hi-fi. Young arrangers were commissioned to revamp the familiar themes and former stars such as the trumpeter Roy Eldridge and the singer Anita O’Day were brought into the studio. History has it that nothing brought Gene Krupa more pleasure than making this new recording. And his pleasure is clearly discernible on both sides of the album. It begins with 'Let Me Off Uptown', a witty dialogue between voices and trumpet, and ends with 'After You’ve Gone', a number hard to be equalled. In between are ten numbers in which Gene beats his heart out on the drums, Roy shines out on his brilliant trumpet, and Anita with her deep voice drags behind the beat with wonderful timing. Big-band jazz at its very best, not in the least dull or outdated, performed not by veterans but by mature experts – that is what you get a dozen times over with this disc: twelve numbers, well-known for many, many years, but all given a new look.

The Other Side of Abbey Road
George Benson
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

George Benson, influenced by Wes Montgomery, had only just gone from being a well kept secret to a bright star in the celestial jazz firmament. Despite his tender age!! His youthful, happy-go-lucky ways may well have led him and his producer Creed Taylor to turn to this important Beatles album and – without great pathos or standing in awe - they put the music through a mincer as it were, adding a large pinch of jazz spice and a good portion of strings and Latin percussion on the way, and serving up this tasty dish to jazz freaks and beatniks. Today, almost 25 years later, this compilation, which ranges from 'Come Together' to 'The End', has lost nothing of its freshness and certainly need not shy away from comparison with the originals. These are no mere copies but little masterpieces in which the Fab Four’s immortal ideas have been taken up and re-mixed. George Benson’s singing is unobtrusive and reserved, knowing full well that he cannot hope to compete with John and Paul - but as a guitarist he certainly can stand alongside George in every respect.

Gerry Mulligan's sessions with Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges and Paul Desmond belong in every well-stocked LP collection of jazz fans all over the globe. But if you happen to have missed out, then here's the chance to buy a fantastic, top notch re-release and put the needle to the groove as fast as you can. From first to last, you will hear what made jazz what it is from its beginnings around 1900 up to the present day: communication and interaction. Two highly sensitive, top calibre musicians neither of them easy men to deal with were invited into the Verve Studio towards the end of 1959. Here they prepared themselves well, practiced together, and devoted themselves to six numbers in a relaxed atmosphere of mutual respect where neither attempted to blast away the other. The numbers all come from the Duke Ellington Songbook and Gerry Mulligan's own, and are a sure guarantee for the best of the best. It must be mentioned that one of the best rhythm groups of westcoast jazz Jimmy Rowles, Leroy Vinegar and Mel Lewis provide the amazingly sensitive background for these two giants of mainstream jazz. The excellent recording technique of the Verve Studio in Los Angeles ensures that even 50 years later every single note played on baritone and tenor saxophones is sheer pleasure.

 Getz & Gil
Getz Gilberto
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed

Two names spring to mind upon hearing the words jazz and samba, namely those of Stan Getz and Joo Gilberto. But really one should be thinking of Antonio Carlos Jobim, who, with his composition from 1958 Chega de saudade, first created the type of Brazilian samba that is known today as bossa nova. It was with one of Jobim's songs, Desafinado, that the bossa nova began its triumphant conquest of the USA. In 1962, Stan Getz made the work widely known when he recorded the number, together with Charlie Byrd, on his album Jazz Samba (Verve V6-8432). And it was this recording, along with Focus (1961), which was responsible for Getz's definitive comeback in the USA at that same time. Jazz Samba opened the floodgates to a new musical vogue, and although cool jazz had been swept aside by hard bop, the reserved and melancholy touch of Getz's style once again became all the rage. It is really not at all surprising, therefore, that the album Getz/Gilberto, recorded in March 1963 for the Verve label, was a winner right from the very start, bringing together as it did the two godfathers of samba Jobim and Gilberto with their American brother Getz. This music is like a pleasantly warm bath whose water is perfumed with essential oil, or like a mild summer night bathed in golden moonlight. The songs, all of them now classics in their own right, are filled with the joy of life, peace and harmony. What more can one possibly desire?

At last, one might cry, at last these gems are available again after so many years! Strangely enough, connoisseurs of fine sound and music with a difference have been very reserved when it came to expressing their appreciation of the arranger, composer and conductor Gil Evans. Gil's milestones in jazz history (his work with Miles Davis and his melancholy trumpet is now legendary) have become entrenched in our memories thanks to his unusual combination of instruments: waldhorns, tuba, oboe - all played by jazz musicians. Speakers Corner has done it again, not to be missed!

Grant Green

It was often very frustrating for producers at the Blue Note label to have their superstars bought up by other recording companies. Thats precisely what happened to the greatest guitarists of the Sixties Wes Montgomery and Grant Green who is now heard on the present disc. Neither of them were able to enjoy the big money, however, for they both died young. Verves producer Creed Taylor took care to give Grant Green a more up-to-date musical framework, ensured that he had plenty of time in the studio, and that the stereo recording technology was the best of its day. The two themes on the A side are developed tranquilly and provide a basis for long improvisations not only by Grant Green but also by Larry Young. Here, in this soundworld, Young at last manages to throw off his 'Jimmy Smith sound' and develops his own colouring. The tenor sax player Harold Vick is heard only in a few numbers: in particular he lends a new sound colouring to 'The Cantaloupe Woman' where the interplay between wind and strings is of constant interest.

HANDEL/WATER MUSIC/MINUET FROM ''THE FAITHFUL SHEPHERD''/ROYAL FIREWORKS MUSIC/GEOPRGE SZELL - LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
This is an exact reproduction of the 1962 Decca stereo record.
Composed in the spirit of the Baroque, the Water Music and Royal Fireworks Music were written by the highly regarded George Frideric Handel on commissions from Kings George I and George II of England.
The remarkable premiere of the Water Music a suite of instrumental airs, fanfares, dances, and other delights was played in 1717 by musicians in a barge who entertained the King and his entourage on a banquet held on board the royal barge which travelled up and down the river Thames. According to reports at the time, Handel's new work was greeted with unanimous acclaim.
Music appeared equally fitting for the solemn but festive commemoration of a peace treaty. The Royal Fireworks Music originally scored for brass, oboes and bassoons, plus timpani and the bizarre serpent horn was composed in 1749 for the victory gala in London's Green Park celebrating the Peace of Aix-La-Chapelle.
In both pieces Georg Szell and the London Symphony Orchestra conjure up the full splendour of baroque tonality. Orchestra and conductor are clearly in a festive mood. The strings show rare form, lush and radiant. The brass are brilliant but never shrill. The atmosphere is transparent, the spatial effects are impressive.
For the outstanding quality of this recording we are indebted not least to its inspired recording engineer, Kenneth E. Wilkinson.

On a late summer evening in 1963, a show took place at Los Angeles' open-air Greek Theatre in, which had fans flocking to the Hollywood mountains. Those who were not lucky to get a ticket climbed to the surrounding trees to see the Calypso man from a distance at least. Others were waiting, recording equipment at the ready, namely the sound engineers from RCA, and in the following year the eagerly anticipated album was released. Some of the songs, such a the giddy-paced 'Zombie Jamboree,' 'Look Over Yonder' and the delightfully schmaltzy 'Try To Remember,' had only been released as studio recordings. The majority of the other numbers were brand new and were now heard for the very first time in the exciting live atmosphere, something that comes over authentically in this release.

This album provides a wonderful testimony to the Jamaican singer's flexibility. It includes songs such as 'Midnight Special,'A prisoner's nocturnal prayer for freedom, and 'On Top Of Old Smokey,' which Belafonte instills with intricate rhythm and Caribbean flair. And the tailor-made arrangements are no less thrilling: whether possessing all the drive of a stomping big band, filled with the intimacy of a smoochy small ensemble (with Bob Dylan on harmonica) or with an earthy, folksy, bluegrass sound - there's all that and plenty more!

Songs from Africa: Just by reading this subtitle, one might well ask oneself whether an album with such an unpretentious title would ever manage to find its way to the charts. But as soon as the disc is placed on the turntable, all doubts are dispelled that this collection of songs was actually one of the top sellers of its genre in the Sixties. The melodies, all of which stem from South African tribal songs, are treated lovingly to sensitive new arrangements. It goes without saying that the producers only wanted a minimum of background instrumentalists for these two star singers in order to preserve the original character of the songs. A little bit of guitar here, a touch of mouth organ there, and the soft rhythm of drums are all that are needed for the soft springy sound. Central to the authentic sound is a mixed chorus that mostly uses the traditional art of antiphonal singing with the soloists.

 The Music From Peter Gunn
Henry Mancini
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

This is the recording that truly established Henry Mancini as both an innovator and a household name. While he had already nabbed an Oscar nomination, this soundtrack to the hit 1959 television series with its jazz score logged ten weeks at the top of the charts and remained a top seller for almost two years. While Blake Edwards' detective show may not have proved an enduring favorite, the music certainly has. Of course, the memorable Peter Gunn theme is the anchor here. The bass and drums interlocking provided hits for artists as diverse as Ray Anthony, Duane Eddy, Deodato and The Art of Noise. Mancini was working with some of the best musicians in the business with special mention going to trumpeter Pete Candoli, saxman Ronnie Lang and pianist Johnny T. Williams, who would later own his own truckload of awards as composer John Williams.

 London Sessions
Howlin' Wolf
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

With the sixties British blues boom, which included acts such as John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac, and The Rolling Stones, a number of attempts were made to record the original blues masters such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker (actually the tradition was continued in the nineties by John Lee Hooker with his 'The Healer' project) with some of the young upcoming 'white' blues players. Unfortunately many of the projects lacked real impact (usually the recordings were done on the cheap, over short periods, with most of the young musicians simply too intimidated by their idols to offer any real creative input), however these sessions with the great Howlin' Wolf proved to be one of the exceptions. Although pushing 60, and suffering from heart and kidney problems, the 'Wolf' was still in imposing form, and with backing musicians including his own superb guitarist Hubert Sumlin, Eric Clapton (one of the main catalysts of the sessions – along with producer Norman Dayron), Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Ian Stewart, Stevie Winwood, plus numerous drop in guests, the resulting sessions produced 'blues gold'.

 The Cat
Jimmy Smith

The Incredible Jimmy Smith – that’s what is says so confidently on the cover with the black cat! The law demands that what is promised must be delivered – and a record collector is no less demanding. The fact that Smith moved the Hammond organ from the dance floor to the jazz scene and upgraded it to become a fully-fledged improvisation instrument is to be found in every good dictionary of music. But what resulted must be heard to be believed.
No problem for our cat, crouched low and ready to pounce. She slinks along the Rhythm and Blues path, purrs through the night, steps nimbly to the St. Louis Blues, and gives the somewhat aged Basin Street a gentle blow with her paw. In the background is her powerful clan: Kenny Burrell with his firm grip, Don Butterfield with his strong tone, the thundering Grady Tate, and last but not least Lalo Schifrin, who watches over the haunt with a glinting eye. And then of course there is the VERVE gang – who made a recording that is as black as the cat herself. Incredible!

With A Little Help From My Friends
Joe Cocker

This man is living proof that you can be born in Sheffied and still sing like a black man from Mississipi. His performance at the Woodstock Festival made him a cult star in the New World; and the New York Times called him the best singer of all times. His name? Joe Cocker! Joe always needed a little help from his friends to get him back on his feet after an exhausting tour or a drugs trip.It was this cover version of the classic Beatles song that made Joe Cocker and his first album famous, even though the title is the penultimate number on the B side. But no one minds that because all the foregoing songs are so powerful that waiting is sheer pleasure! Cocker’s own compositions are interpolated with dusky ballads such as Peter Dello’s 'Do I Still Figure In Your Life' or Bob Dylan’s 'I Shall Be Released' so that a wide range of emotions are interpreted. Without a doubt, many listeners would define this compilation as 'the very best' of Joe Cocker.
Fortunately, the sound on this VERVE recording is situated “on the sunny side of the street”. The immediate presence of the vocal part, a fresh instrumental timbre and a pleasantly dry playhouse atmosphere all guarantee sheer delight for listeners to this collector’s item.

 Me and the Blues
Joe Williams

When someone such as Joe Williams (not be confused with Big Joe Williams) speaks of himself in one breath with the blues, then he is claiming a privilege, which can only be granted to a very few. But then - Williams, who grew up in the blues metropolis Chicago and performed as early as the Thirties with Jimmie Noones and later with Coleman Hawkins and Lionel Hampton, is one of the first and last of the great big band singers at one and the same time. As one of the permanent great musicians of the Count Basie Band, he helped the ensemble to renewed popularity in the Fifties, but then turned his attention to smaller bands, returning in later years to the all-star ensemble as a 'special guest'.
'Me And The Blues' manifests itself as blues from a modern viewpoint in that it amalgamates the austere, gritty primeval sound of the Southside with a brilliantly arranged big band sound. The result of this extremely pure synthesis of sound (also from a technical standpoint) reveals a variety of blues that integrates such elements of mainstream jazz as were typical of the day. It is no wonder therefore that all the great names such as Thad Jones, Clark Terry, Ben Webster and Kenny Burrell gathered together to participate as soloists or in the background in this recording.

 A Love Supreme
John Coltrane
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Right from the very first hearing, absolutely every single jazzcritic shared the same opinion – whether trained musicians or not, true or would-be jazz expert: “A Love Supreme” is John Coltrane’s most important recording. And the rave reviews which appeared in the magazines Downbeat, Jazz Hot, Jazz Podium and Swingjournal reflected this: critics all over the world, in America, Europe and Japan recognized that Coltrane’s deep religious belief had influenced both his approach to life and his music-making. It not only enabled him to express himself with great intensity but also lent him the necessary inner peace to conceive a work of almost 40 minutes in length and to lead his quartet along the same path as himself.
The first section, entitled “Acknowledgement”, has a forceful bass line which runs throughout the whole work. The powerful sound increases in intensity, whereby the bass motif undergoes constant modulation, with John Coltrane’s meditative singing creating immense tension.
In “Resolution” Coltrane’s powerful, quasi hymnlike expression comes to the fore, with McCoy Tyner achieving equal intensity in his solo.“Pursuance”, with its density, quick-as-lightning runs and block chords, gives us a taste of John Coltrane’s later ‘free’ phase.“Psalm” is filled with the famous, almost static melodies rather like a fervent prayer which are so typical for John Coltrane.“A Love Supreme” has been a faithful companion and teacher of generations of saxophonists and its message goes way beyond Music and is still valid today, in 2001, the year in which John Coltrane would have celebrated his 75th birthday.

This was the album that changed the way people looked at John Coltrane as a jazz artist. Early in his career, Coltrane was generally looked upon as a wild and unbrideled avant-gardist. Johnny Hartman was many a jazzman's favorite singer for his musical acumen, gorgeous voice, and the sheer class that he exuded. This collaboration with saxophonist John Coltrane was a major success in every way for both of them. Be assured that this is no gmere uest star turn for Coltrane since he's working as before with drummer Elvin Jones, bassist Jimmy Garrison and pianist McCoy Tyner.
The list of great performances here extends from the nearly-defnitive version of ''Lush Life'' to ''They Say It’s Wonderful'' which sounds as though it is clad in black silk, to the lyrical ''My One And Only Love.'' right up to the light-footed rumba ''Autumn Serenade.'' Here are six true masterpieces which will get right under your skin. Llisten to how relaxed and self-assuredly the crooner’s great voice carries the melody, which is then taken up and continued by John Coltrane on his instrument. Coltrane's Ballads record and his work with Duke Ellington had already demonstrated that he was a master of slow tempi and in this LP he once again paces slowly down this path.
This production which was produced by Bob Thiele and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in March of 1963 and this is the best vinyl re-issue to date.

 It Serve You Right
John Lee Hooker

John Lee Hooker himself did not know his exact date of birth. If he hadn’t died at around the age of 80, this ageless musician would still be easily pulling the next generation to his gigs. Hooker remains a phenomenon, a mysterious figure of black rhythm and blues, a charismatic king who reigns supreme in rock ‘n’ roll’s Hall of Fame. John W. Peters described his music as a synthesis of scorching emotional ardour, unrelenting rhythmic intensity, and original poetry of a highly personal character. Anyone hearing him for the first time may well be startled at the unfiltered passion and power of his music.
And another surprise is in store for those who compare Hooker’s late recordings with those made in the Sixties. His unmistakable, raw voice has fully matured, but his incantory style of singing appears markedly finer and more flexible. And then there is the perfect gem of a rhythm group whose sinewy sounds fill the grooves with merciless gravitational force. It’s enough to make your spine tingle!

 Johnny Cash At San Quentin
Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash was and will always remain a country music legend. When performing he chose to wear black as a symbol of solidarity with the oppressed and those who had no rights. His chosen outlaw image was just as convincing as the train-like boom-tiddy-boom sound of his rhythm group who lent their typical sound to many of his 500 songs. At the very zenith of his career, Cash (who himself had committed a few minor offenses) had the idea of singing and playing for the bad guys behind the prison walls for nothing. Initially his suggestion to market the live recording was rejected, but finally his record company decided to release the album At Folsom Prison. The surprise success of At Folsom Prison led Columbia Records to release At San Quentin shortly afterwards. The recording, in which Cash and his combo were frequently applauded more or less at the end of each verse, exceeded all expectations. Today it is still considered to be the Man In Black's best live recording.

 Billy Strayhorn & Orchestra
Johnny Hodges
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Unfortunately, jazz fans in this century are forced to enjoy a concert by Johnny Hodges or Duke Ellington from the comfort of their television armchair. The climax of any of these recorded concerts is always found in the lyrical, gentle solos of the first-rate alto saxophonist. And one can see for oneself how seemingly effortlessly the notes just pour out of his instrument and how his restless eyes search contact with the audience. The melodies were almost always penned by Billy Strayhorn, Duke’s friend and alter ego.For the jazz producer Norman Granz, it was a foregone conclusion to record an LP with the two lyricists. And for Johnny Hodges, who had already released more than a dozen LPs to his name, this particular recording was to be the summit of his career. The swinging, schmaltz-free carpet of sound of Duke Ellington’s orchestra might well be better likened to the swell and surge of a calm sea over which the archlike melodies are allowed to unfold. Such a mood is virtually impossible to express in words - which is logical - for if it was easy then musicians would be authors, not musicians ...
One shouldn’t be tempted to first pick out the new titles such as “Your Love Has Faded” or “Tailor Made” in the belief that there is nothing new to discover in such numbers as “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”, “Day Dream” and “I’m Just A Lucky So And So”. That would be a real mistake - for it is precisely these catchy melodies, bedded in amongst the others, that make this album so exciting! And just listen to these wizards from the Ellington Band: they obviously thoroughly enjoyed performing ‘in the background’ for a change instead of playing solo and standing in the limelight.
There is plenty of good to be discovered in Johnny Hodges (even if gossip has it that he was no angel!), but for that you need the recordings being available. Thanks to the top-quality of this re-release of Verve 8452 you certainly don’t have to place top-bids at an auction anymore!

 Feliciano!

In 1969, when Jose Feliciano aroused the American people’s anger by singing live a soul version of their national anthem, the “Star-Spangled Banner”, he assured himself the reputation as one of the most successful cover-version performers of all times. He even carried off two Grammy awards for his soul version of the Doors number 'Light My Fire' which is found on the present recording. But this album, which proudly bears the title 'Feliciano!', does not merely excel for its hits from the Sixties such as 'California Dreamin’', 'Sunny' and three smash hits by the Beatles. It also reveals this entertainer’s stupendous musicianship on the acoustic guitar, and pampers the listener with creamy string arrangements and a thrilling Latino drive.
The very fact that the double bass jazz player Ray Brown can be found in the ensemble listing is an indication of the versatility of the musical concept of this disc. It might defy any attempt to put it in a pigeon hole, but it certainly deserves a place of its own on the record collector’s shelf!

 Spartacvs
Aram Khachaturian
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
This 1967 recording originally released on Decca and reissued by Speakers Corner features the composer himself conducting two of his most popular works. Aram Khachaturian, the most well-known of all Armenian composers, believed that art should be closely bound to the people and indeed it was a pre-requisite for his own creative inspiration. Largely uninfluenced by the manifold trends of the 20th century, Khachaturian’s works reflect the folk heritage of his native country. In the two richly orchestrated ballets, which he himself later arranged into suites, we find the musical spirit and customs of an ancient culture. In particular the unrestrained exuberance of the Sabre Dance from Gayaneh has contributed to the immense popularity of this suite. The ballet Spartacus could be described as a monumental historical drama and made Khachaturian one of the Soviet Union’s most highly honoured composers.
That a slave uprising can not only be expressed in music but can also take place on an international dimension is admirably demonstrated by the maestro personally in this recording where Khachaturian takes on the role of leader of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

 Attack & Release
The Black Keys
$19.99 $18.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Until now, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney of the Black Keys took an extreme do-it-yourself approach to record making, hunkering down in a basement studio or setting up equipment in one of the abandoned factories of their native Akron, Ohio. Their modus operandi was more seance than session. With a minimal set of tools, they conjured up a big, swaggering blues-rock sound, seemingly drawn from some distant time and place yet too weirdly original to ever be called retro. As Rolling Stone put it in a review of their 2006 Nonesuch debut, Magic Potion, Pure blues rock of this caliber is really timeless.
For this album, however, the Black Keys decided not to go it alone: Attack and Release is the result of one of the most audacious and eagerly awaited collaborations in alternative rock history. As producer, Auerbach and Carney chose Danger Mouse, the mega-eclectic sonic mastermind behind the Grammy Award-winning Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere and its multi-format hit, Crazy, as well as the music-industry provocateur who created the mother of all mash-ups, The Grey Album. The Black Keys also deigned to work at an established studio, albeit one within driving distance of Akron. Suma Recording, a legendary spot in northeast Ohio renowned for its supply of great vintage gear, provided just the right ambience for the guys. As Carney put it, with genuine affection, Suma smells like a moldy cabin and looks like a haunted house.
On Attack and Release, Danger Mouse is more creative co-conspirator than traditional figure behind the boards. He doesn't radically alter the duo's sound so much as coax out more of its inherent soulfulness, groove and bittersweet emotion. Two versions of Remember When illustrate how the duo can swing easily from smoldering ballad to thrashing rocker. I'm more pleased with the sound of this record than any one we've ever made, says Carney, and Auerbach concurs: We never let it all go like we did for this one, anything was game. It was just fun to make, and that's why I think it's so successful. The band adds more instrumentation to their mix, including piano, organ and moog synthesizer. Danger Mouse fashions subtle special effects, like the ghostly background choir that surfaces on the moody I Got Mine, which sounds as if it were samples from some old Warner Bros. cartoon. The Black Keys also invited in a few special guests: guitarist Marc Ribot and clarinetist-flautist (and Pat's uncle) Ralph Carney, both veterans of Tom Waits' band and players on countless avant-rock/jazz/noise session. Jessica Lea Mayfield a/k/a Chittlin, an impressive 18 year-old bluegrass/country singer from Kent, Ohio, sings alongside a heart-breakingly plaintive Auerbauch on the slow-dance final cut, Things Ain't Like They Used to Be

 Miles Smiles

Except for the taping of a live performance at the Portland Festival, Miles Davis' 1966 discography only lists Miles Smiles which was unusual considering the large output Miles and his ensembles produced for Columbia Records in the Sixties.
The bass player Ron Carter was best suited for the complicated rhythm part and remained Miles’s 'number one' in a quintet which gave a new interpretation to compositions by Wayne Shorter and jazz hits such as Freedom Jazz Dance by Eddie Harris and Jimmy Heath’s Gingerbread Boy.
Every second of the nine-minute-long Footprints by Shorter is an absolute highlight, while the drumming of the young Tony Williams in Freedom Jazz Dance is full of vitality, with a quick pulse, and even described as threatening in the liner notes. This music is neither 'new stream' nor 'old guard' but good modern jazz according to Anthony Tuttle. That’s exactly what Miles Smiles was upon its release 40 years ago and that’s exactly what it has remained to this day!

 Knappertsbusch Conducts Wagner
Hans Knappertsbusch
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Even today Wagnerites still rave about the legendary Bayreuth recording of Parsifal whose lengthy score when conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch lasted a whole LP more than his fellow conductors’ recordings. But even taken at such a leisurely tempo, no one thought of looking impatiently at the clock. Just sit back and listen to the present recording of Wagner Preludes and you certainly won’t find this surprising. Bar for bar the maestro picks out even the finest particles of the musical structure and gives his Munich ensemble time and space to conjure up a delightful timbre. Just note the warmth and presence of the wind instruments – only Otto Klemperer managed to achieve comparable results in his recordings of the 1960s.
Whatever sort of sound the engineers had had in mind for this recording on the Westminster label, they managed to get fairly close to the acoustical ideal of the Bayreuth Festival opera house. Luckily they were not tempted by the possibility of reproducing spectacular lateral effects which abounded in the early days of stereophony. The Wagner coming out of the loudspeakers is dry, analytical and quite, quite natural.

 Ma Vlast
Rafael Kubelik with Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
$59.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Smetana’s symphonic poem “Má Vlast“ consists of several individual compositions which the composer put together at a later date to form a cycle and is one of the greatest testimonies to Czech national music. The Bohemian countryside and sagas are reflected in the tone poem From “Bohemia’s Woods and Fields“, while the programmatic “Moldau“ occupies a rightful place among the most outstanding works to have been written in the late 19th century. Thanks to its popular folk melodies, its clearly structured and recognizable “programme“, and brilliant orchestration, the work has never failed to arouse the enthusiasm of a wide public. Rafael Kubelik conducted numerous first-class orchestras both in the concert hall and in the recording studio, and won a deserved reputation as the Smetana connoisseur. He is to be congratulated on his choice of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for this recording: gentle and transparent in the gossamer-light orchestral passages, powerful and smooth when playing as a full tutti. This thoroughly satisfying performance is further enhanced by its excellent recording technique and is to be recommended to all collectors.

Haven't we always known that blasphemous laughter will land us in trouble? Just think what happened in the monastic whodunit 'The Name of The Rose' in which a god-fearing monk did his utmost to hide a book about laughter from curious eyes and so turned into a serial killer in old age. Actually, carnival merrymaking monks went unpunished in medieval times when they turned strict Christian values upside down once a year and celebrated a so-called 'Feast of the Ass' in their hallowed halls. First, a Boy-Bishop would be chosen from among the lower orders and choir boys who would read a burlesque, mock mass to hoots of laughter from the revelers. Meanwhile, other monks played cards and dice at the altar, burned incense made of dung and old shoe soles and sang dirty songs. The Clemencic Consort has reconstructed the music for a lifelike 'Asses Mass' from medieval manuscripts. Among profane songs, contrapuntal, polyphonic verses and melodies with an accompaniment based on fifths, we hear Gregorian chant accompanied by the growl, rattle and rasp of historical instruments.

All the composers in the world who write their own Folia don’t keep a close account of what they are doing. They mature patiently like the tree that does not haste his sap; they soak up everything and remain confident in the torments of spring, without anxiety that they might not know another spring. And spring comes and a quiet weariness overcomes them, even if they are patient, carefree and calm, as if all eternity lay before them. They can then love their Folia and their solitude; they endure the pain it causes them and succeed in investing the sound of their complaint with beauty.

The President Plays with the Oscar Peterson Trio
Lester Young
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

4th August 1952: apparently a particularly auspicious day in the life of Lester Young, known as 'Prez'. When he entered the New York studio with the Oscar Peterson Trio, he had absolutely no idea that twelve wonderfully swinging yet totally relaxed numbers would be set down by the producer Norman Granz. Two years previously the boss of Norgran and later of Verve signed a contract with Lester, although the musician’s physical and mental condition (as a result of excess alcohol, drug abuse and other vices) did not really warrant this. But his success at 'Jazz At The Philharmonic' and full concert halls in Europe filled the jazz tenor with new vigour. He lent genial virtuosity to both standard and blues themes; he latched on to the harmonies of the Oscar Peterson with immeasurable creativity. While laboriously earning his daily bread with Fletcher Henderson and Count Basie’s big bands, the jam in the sandwich was provided by the small ensembles where he performed with the singer Billie 'Lady Day'. But the topping on his cake was definitely his long improvisations on blues themes (which were recorded without a time limit), such as the free 'Ad Lib Blues' on this album, and those on standards from the American Songbook. His dry though mature renderings of 'Tea For Two' and 'Almost Like Being In Love' - free of unnecessary ballast, relaxed and without vibrato - have lost nothing of their fascination over the years. The 50-year span is quite unnoticeable, at least in this excellent re-release. There’s not a speck of dust anywhere to dull the shine!

Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsodies / Enesco - Romanian Rhapsodies
Antal Dorati
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Born in 1881, George Enescu led the life of a globetrotter. Although he became acquainted with all manner of schools and styles during his thorough studies in Vienna and Paris, it was invariably folk music that provided him with the most important source of inspiration. Thanks to their freshness and impressive thematic invention, the two Roumanian Rhapsodies have remained firm favourites to this day. Nothing in the music appears to demand great effort or mental struggle. The colourful mixture of lyrical and spirited passages seems completely natural and homogeneous, offering sheer delight for the ears right up to the final chord. Enescu’s carefree ‘hits’ serve as an ideal introduction to two orchestral heavyweights by Franz Liszt, which undoubtedly are to be counted as 'state of the art' works in this particular genre. Antal Dorati conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with a firm hand and complete concentration – as is demanded by this tightly knit score –, always managing to find the perfect balance between timbral force and transparency. Of course one can find elsewhere these compositions being performed faster, louder and with questionable sensational effects. But if you are looking for a faithful interpretation of the score, musicality and natural sound, then this is the recording for you.

 The Best of Little Walter

Little Walter's ascent to becoming one of the greatest exponents of the sound known as Chicago blues began in 1951 when he became a fixed member of Muddy Waters' band. Two years later he established his own group and rocketed to the top of the rhythm-and-blues charts with smash hits such as 'Juke', 'Sad Hours' and 'My Babe'. Along with his virtuoso technique and his love of experimenting with echo effects, Walter is noted for his clear, unfussed style which occasionally brings back memories of Louis Jordans saxophone melodies, thereby taking up influences from popular jazz.It is astonishing that Walter's heritage is so small. Of the 100 recorded titles he recorded, only about half of them were ever released. The present album offers a portrait of the 'King of the pocket organ' and covers the whole spectrum of his playing, his instrument sometimes sounding like the human voice, a saxophone, or a snarling electric guitar. Harp fans and lovers of traditional blues certainly shouldn't hesitate to secure their copy of this album

Lou Reed

Appearing just a few months after the somewhat unsuccessful release of Lou Reed’s fairly underground first album and rocketing straight into the charts, this production had two British guardian angels to help it on its way, namely David Bowie and Mick Ronson, both of whom obviously knew how to steer Reed’s songwriting qualities into safe waters, without watering down his biting sarcasm and humorous provocation. And that’s why grating guitar rock ('Vicious') is found alongside a bittersweet, tender ballad ('Perfect Day') and even an old-time jazz parody ('Goodnight Ladies') which is sung with a tongue a heavy as lead. Why then compare this highly original music mix with others, when it’s so much easier to hear this record for what it is - a truly cult album?

Luiz Bonfa Plays and Sings Bossa Nova
Luiz Bonfa

With bossa simply everything goes and everything goes simply! A solitary voice, a simple wooden block or a solo guitar are all that are needed to conjure up the elementary forces of Brazilian music. But the great names didn’t necessarily love a one-man show with a nameless band in the background but often wrote recording history by getting their individual teams together and combining their creative powers. In Lalo Schifrin and Oscar Castro Neves, the guitar virtuoso and singer Luiz Bonfa had two top musicians at his side who all left their handwriting on this album. Schifrin worked on the large string arrangements while Bonfa put his pen to the songs for smaller ensembles. Well over the half of the numbers recorded here are by Bonfa, who even shared his work with himself in that he lent his voice to side one of the record and his instrumental skills to side two. And though he proves that he can go it alone, as in the popular 'One Note Samba', the less well-known but hear-worthy 'Samba De Duas Notas' tells us that with more of a crowd things get even better.

 Mahler - Symphony #3
Sir Georg Solti conducts London Symphony Orchestra
$64.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
“My symphony will be something the world has never heard before. The whole of Nature will be lent a voice in it and will impart such deep secrets as those one might imagine in one's dreams.” Mahler’s vision of music which reflects the world finds its monumental culmination in his Third Symphony. The god Pan awakes to dull drum beats and rumbling basses. From afar a lied theme feels its way to the fore. The mild season of Spring dawns with song, sounds of nature and the budding of vegetation; then at last Summer marches in, grotesquely distorted in its exuberance, expressing the dualism of the innocence of Nature and its terrifying primeval force. Only in the finale are these contrarieties united in glorious harmony – although an undercurrent of doubt is always present.
Sir Georg Solti and the London Symphony Orchestra are absolutely ideal for performing this mammoth, highly complex, multi-layered work. With fairly brisk tempi, clearly differentiated strings, and the usual excellent brass, Solti gives a gripping performance which no Mahler fan should miss - even if already has other recordings of the work in his collection.

 Mahler - Symphony #1

“What kind of a world is this which produces such sounds and forms to portray itself?” said Mahler of his First Symphony and gave the world his answer in the music. What at first sounds like “endless Spring” is transformed grotesquely to become an irreal collage. Just how deceptive is this idyllic landscape through which the wayfarer wanders? Distant fanfares, furtive melodies and strange cuckoo calls disturb the seemingly peaceful depiction of Nature before the cheerful theme melody pushes to the fore. But this peace is transient too. The wayfarer begins to increase his pace, he is not the hunter but the hunted in a hostile world. This symphony neither portrays nor describes – it presents the esthetic counterpart of reality. In view of the recent revival of Mahler and the resultant new recordings of his works, this early DECCA recording cannot be too highly praised. The disc guarantees not only a masterly performance but sumptuous sound and transparency. The owner of this particular recording of the Titan Symphony certainly needs no other and has every right to ask, “What kind of a record is this which produces such sounds...?”

 Mahler - Symphony #2

The search for the extra-musical world in Gustav Mahler’s philosophical and programmatic works will doubtless continue to occupy future generations of music scholars. Today’s music lovers, however, are wholly satisfied with the highly varied interpretations and impressive sound reproduction – which is precisely what Mahler himself wished for his rugged works. For decades Mahler’s dramatic musical masterpieces were misunderstood and scorned as “kapellmeister music”. Luckily interest in his works was revived and all nine symphonies were recorded in the 1960s by the recently deceased conductor Sir Georg Solti. Right up to this very day, his cycle has clearly lost nothing of its aura, its reputation for “never having been surpassed” – how could it otherwise have been so successful for so many years in the light of all the highly competitive, more recent recordings?
After the success of the new pressing of Mahler’s First Symphony (MUSD-SC-6113), it was high time that the Resurrection-Symphony became available on LP once more. And the result is most impressive. One can only hope that the complete Mahler cycle will one day be resurrected in vinyl.

Mantovani creates such a lush and intense violin sound that that many critics believed it was the result of recording tricks, an assumption that Mantovani easily disproved with his numerous concerts. This record demonstrates the whole spectrum of one of the 20th century's most genial arrangers: 'I Dream Of Jeannie' is a wonderful example of the truly remarkable strings which is counterbalanced by such numbers as the sparkling 'Camp town Races' for example. Arranging folk songs for large orchestra can be somewhat perilous in that they easily become insignificant but Mantovani is in no danger of this here.

 Organ Recital

The organ, queen of instruments, stood for centuries solely in the service of church music. Widor, who as an organist felt himself bound to follow the traditions of Johann Sebastian Bach, was daring enough to undertake an historically significant step by founding the French organ school. Its representatives strove for the authentic performance of Bach’s works and redefined the almost boundless possibilities of their instrument in their own compositions. Widor’s Organ Symphonies, which were certainly intended to incorporate orchestral characteristics, are notable for their finely worked counterpoint, prominent rhythm, sure sense of form, and massive tonal effects, as is impressively demonstrated here in this performance of the Allegro from Symphony No. 6. The introvert 'Salve Regina' is in a very different vein, conjuring up mystic spheres with its Gregorian melodies. Likewise, Dupré’s Prelude and Fugue is imbued with a sacral character, whereby the scurrying Prelude culminates in a powerful main section. His 'Triptyque' provides a rather more worldly contrast with its dance-like nature, and nicely rounds off this record which offers an excellent cross-section of the art of two giants of the organ. What is more, the 6,900 organ pipes of New York’s St. Thomas Church ensure that the listener will enjoy a truly powerful sound.

 Mel Torme Swings Shubert Alley
Mel Torme
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed

The musical collaboration between the pianist and arranger Marty Paich and the drummer and singer Mel Tormé was particularly fruitful. Among the dozen LPs they made for various labels, 'Swings Shubert Alley' for Verve is an absolute highlight. This is no wonder, if one takes a look at the old favorites it contains. All are composed by top musical composers ranging from Oscar Hammerstein, Cole Porter up to Leonard Bernstein. Not to forget 'On The Street Where You Live' from 'My Fair Lady'!
Born in 1925, Mel Tormé was a professional drummer before he could be persuaded to try out another instrument – and to be sure, it is his rhythm, his beat, characterized by the relaxed swing of a west coast drummer, which makes him so special. All the song titles come from the two decades between 1940 and 1960, and according to Marty Paich one of the main criteria for their selection was whether or not they had jazz potential. All twelve titles certainly do and they all offer great opportunities for soloists Art Pepper, Frank Rosolino and Bill Perkins to show off their prowess. However the songs must suit the singer too, and have suitable lyrics – and it must be said: they fit swinging Mel like a glove. Just listen to 'Hello, Young Lovers' and 'Just In Time' for confirmation of that! Although both numbers only have a very simple melodic line, they are greatly enhanced by Mel Tormé’s improvisational talents. There’s not a single number among these twelve tried and tested old favorites which could be considered a flop. Tormé and Paich prove that simple melodies can come up a winner if given attractive and thrilling arrangements. The listener will appreciate the excellent stereo recording technique which captures a broad range of timbres and allows the solo voice to swing on a soft bed of sound.

 In Scotland (2 LPs - 45RPM)
Peter Maag with London Symphony Orchestra

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP 45RPM - 2 LPs Sealed

Richard Wagner once described his fellow composer Felix Mendelssohn as a painter of landscapes in music. Mendelssohn obviously had no objections to this judgment when he set off for England with the intention of »raking together« folk melodies that he heard there.
What he harvested during his travels only came to fruition twelve years later in the form of his “Scottish” Symphony, now heard in this wonderful performance by Peter Maag and the London Symphony Orchestra. Maag’s intelligent conducting retains a balance between magical romantic timbre and analytical objectivity, whereby a wholly intentional underlying elegiac mood even spreads its veil over the hymnal third movement and the thrilling finale. His well-moulded interpretation is supported by a clearly stratified orchestral sound which is a real joy to hear, remaining pure and refined, even in the sonorous tutti. And what could be more fitting to round off this “Scottish” programme than the concert overture “The Hebrides“?
Many a Mendelssohn lover would say that this recording should be cast in iron for posterity. But instead, here it is on four 45rpm discs – a real collectors item!

Felix Mendelssohn composed the concert overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1826 while the remaining incidental music, composed for a performance of Shakespeare’s famous play, was written many years later. His well known Wedding March and the other important numbers of A Midsummer Night’s Dream are included in this sought-after DECCA recording. This composition is Mendelssohn’s most important stage works and a great favourite, which explains why it is so frequently performed (especially the overture) and recorded. World-class musicians like the soloists Jennifer Vyvyan, Marion Lowe and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Peter Maag, and supported by the Women’s Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, give a masterly performance of this delightful work which offers an insight into Mendelssohn’s early and late compositional styles. The quality of the performance leaves nothing to be desired and the listener is carried away to a world of dreams, not only during a summer night.

Charles Mingus’s name appears no less than five times on the record sleeve! His vanity may be open to criticism, but in the case of this particular disc, the Impulse record company was quite right to place him so forcefully in the limelight: Charles Mingus, who died in 1979, is here composer, bass player, arranger, leader and ‘animal tamer’.
He composed six of the seven numbers - if you can call it ‘composing’, that is, when he sings the harmonies over the telephone or plays them to his musicians, only to demand exactly the opposite from them in the recording studio!
As a bass player, his meaty sound drives the soloists onwards, only for him to change the tempo abruptly at the very next moment, and forcing them to change their well-trodden improvisational path.
He learned to arrange music from Duke Ellington, whose way of working he adopted: notes are not set down for just anyone to play, but for a specific musician. And here we have the crème de la crème: Booker Ervin, Eric Dolphy and Charlie Mariano.
As a leader, Mingus created his own special moments such as when he forces the whole ensemble to follow him in his spontaneous, contrapuntal ideas.
And during the whole of his life he felt like an animal tamer in the music pit. At these recording sessions in January and September 1963, real personalities sat on the stools - and Messrs. Byard, Williams, Preston and Richmond were by no means meek little creatures.
Looking for a tip as to which title to play first? What else can one say but ‘try them all’. They’re all great! And the pressing too, is absolutely first rate, with none of the streaks that the old Impulse vinyl records always had. One is only too willing to forego the wishy-washy sound that is found on so many of the cheap re-releases - you’ll find that the playing of the ensemble is crystal-clear on this album!

Inimitable Singer-Songwriter-Pianist's Incredible Debut
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: You Will Not Find a Better-Sounding Version!
The Heart of Saturday Night, Nighthawks at the Diner, and Small Change Also Available on 180g LP from Warner Bros.
The cover of Tom Waits' 1973 debut seems to say it all: Perched next to a piano, his head resting on his left arm, and a look of tired regret on his face, the singer-songwriter sets the tone for an album steeped in late-night soliloquy, liquor-addled reflections, and barroom stories. If ever a prototype saloon pianist who has seen and done it all came to life, it's Waits. And Closing Time marks the beginning of one of the most interesting, rewarding careers in music history.
Throughout the album, Waits is both melancholic and amusing, revealing flashes of the carefree wit and sinister humor that, along with his deep, gruff baritone, became trademarks of his inimitable style. True to its title, Closing Time is meant for post-midnight listening sessions and goes great with your favorite cocktail. Along the way, Waits impresses with garrulous tales of mischief, losers, malcontents, loneliness, love, and loss. His transmissions from Los Angeles' underbelly resonate with the same power of those of Charles Bukowski, whose Beat-inspired prose Waits heavily borrows and spins into a musical language of his own. Rustic folk, lounge jazz, and minor-key pop arrangements function as the cherries that flavor Waits' bourbon-shot lyrics.
An artist whose popularity spans generations and is equally prized by both older and younger audiences, Waits' records remain in constant demand, particularly on vinyl, where they fetch top dollar on the used market. Despite several import LP versions, no edition of Closing Time has ever claimed audiophile-quality sound. Which is reason enough why Warner Bros.' reissues of the singer's first four albums on 180g vinyl are worth celebrating and immediately owning.
Mastered from the original master tapes, this is the first time that any of Waits' formative work has been upgraded and comes on with a presence, immediacy, and detail that have always been missing. Do not miss this incredible pressing!

 Days of Future Past
Moody Blues
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Compositions and arrangements for pop group and symphony orchestra belong to the British pop scene like the Queen to the Commonwealth. The Moody Blues, one of a seemingly never-ending number of groups which sprang up in the North of England, ventured early into new territory in that they undertook an ambitious project which sought to mediate between classical tradition and modern music and which might very well be described as real “crossover”.
Their very first long-playing record, made in 1967, was a smash hit right from the start. The album Days of Future Passed jumped into the US charts within a few weeks and remained there for almost two years, bringing the group their first Gold Disc. As the title suggests, the six individual recordings fit together within the programmatic framework of a passing day. This synthesis of orchestral music and original “flower power sound”, where the past melts with the future, results in Nights in White Satin, a timeless super-hit. What is more, the brilliant tonal definition of DECCA’s patented “Deramic Sound System” does not cease to amaze and certainly does justice to this extraordinary recording.

Mozart - Clarinet Concerto - Horn Concerto
Peter Maag and London Symphony Orchestra
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
The amazing skill of two great virtuosos, Joseph Leutgeb and Anton Stadler, inspired Mozart to compose the concertos heard here. Recorded November1959 at London's Kingsway Hall, this DECCA recording gives us an excellent idea of how the concertos would have sounded in Mozart's day, thanks to two of today's very best instrumentalists – the clarinettist Gervase de Peyer and the horn player Barry Tuckwell.
Amazing lightness, warmth of tone and perfect intonation are the hallmarks of the soloist and London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Maag in the clarinet concerto, which Mozart completed only a few weeks before his death. The two horn concertos heard here were also written during Mozart’s final creative period in Vienna. Just one hearing is enough to let them be remembered for all time – for these concertos employ to the full the horn’s rich and widely varied range of expression. Broad arching melodies, tripping runs and merry hunting calls in the final movements guarantee musical enjoyment, and for this we owe our thanks to both the past and present masters of their instruments in this delightful recording.

 Mozart - Eine Klein
Karl Munchinger and London Symphony Orchestra
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Mozart wrote the Divertimento No. 1 at the age of six, while A Musical Joke and Eine kleine Nachtmusik were composed shortly before his death.
From what one hears, apparently only a few music lovers enjoy listening to Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Far too often has it been performed routinely rather than being filled with life. This recording is quite different: living up to his reputation, Karl Münchinger proves that this favourite can be imbued with significance.
The historical roote of the serenade lie in the suite which consists of varied contrasting dance movements. In the spirit of this tradition, Münchinger offers a clear and unfussed interpretation which is absolutely credible and has a freshness rarely heard. The ensemble plays both cheerfully and and wittily. In A Musical Joke, Mozart parodies amateurish composers of his own era, and the orchestra quite obviously participates in the fun.
This LP is distinguished by its musical and tonal balance and is one of DECCA’s best sound recordings.

 Mozart - Mass No. 18
Ferenc Fricsay
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
It is not often that incomplete works enjoy great popularity. And it is even rarer that a torso should exercise such great importance in music history, but this is the case with Mozart’s Great Mass, K. 427. The C minor Mass is always spoken of as if it were complete: it is spoken of with reverence, eyes looking towards Heaven, lost in the beauty of the music, transported to celestial heights. Mozart combines the compositional style of the Baroque masters with the more modern style of the Viennese Classic. Lofty arioso sections alternate with tremendous choral sections for up to eight parts whose splendid and spectacular timbre broke the bounds of tradition and set new standards for the genre.
This Mass is, of course, not merely performed but celebrated, as the Berlin RSO under its Principal Conductor Ferenc Fricsay has so admirably demonstrated in this recording. Precise entries, strict tempi, a polished orchestral timbre and vocal soloists so brilliant one might think they were standing in one’s own front room lend this recording top marks for musical quality and repertoire value.

 Mozart - Piano Concerto 20 & 21
Friedrich Gulda
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Friedrich Gulda is known to all. He is the musical wizard with the embroidered cap, an artist who is equally at home in jazz, the Viennese lied, or the works of the Viennese Classic. Gulda might have only performed a small number of his Austrian compatriot?s 27 piano concerto ? but with these few he certainly created a sensation. That the present recording of the Concertos Nos. 20 and 21, even after 25 years, is still regarded as ranking among the very best performances is something that can be heard after just a few bars. The minor-key first movement of No. 20 begins with a measured tempo and precise articulation, then the piano joins in with almost sober clarity and proceeds to lead a concentrated, tightly enmeshed conversation with the orchestra.
The C major Concerto sparkles brightly with its thrilling, virtuoso part-writing and transparent, almost chamber-like instrumental ensemble. Details left only fleetingly touched and casual phrasing will be sought in vain in this highly analytical interpretation of Mozart?s musical intentions. The listener will do well here to forget the popular concept of a fun-loving, high-spirited Mozart and to recognize the ardent, passionate side of the composer.

 Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante
Kyril Kondrashin with Igor and David Oistrakh
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
“Now I am going to compose a Sinfonia concertante”, wrote Mozart to his father, quite unsuspecting that his contribution to this hybrid of concerto and symphony would not bring the immediate approval and success to which he was accustomed. But opinions have changed drastically since then, especially since the Sinfonia concertante K. 364 has far greater depth to it than its title suggests. The wealth of melodic ideas, subtly allotted alternately to the soloist and the orchestra, testifies to the fact that this is one of Mozart’s mature orchestral masterpieces which he composed while in Vienna. The superb performers in this DECCA recording guarantee that the listener will not only enjoy the deceptive merriment of the outer movements but will be deeply moved by the sad Andante. What bad luck for rival performances! But when father and son take up their bows, this is the recording to beat all recordings! On the B side, the Duo for Violin and Viola, K. 423 is a welcome bonus since it offers a wonderful opportunity for a display of virtuosity and counterpoint. And of course the old question pops up once again as to who is the better master of his instrument: father or son? The answer is simple: neither the one nor the other! – Both, of course!

 Mozart - Symphony 40 & 41
Carlo Giulini, New Philharmonia
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Like all the works he composed during his extremely productive years in Vienna, Mozart’s last two symphonies are remarkable for their ambitious and demanding individuality, despite the fact that they were written in the amazingly short space of only six weeks. Any inference to the dire circumstances in which the composer was living at the time might possibly be detected in the grave character of Symphony No. 40 in G minor. The so-called Jupiter-Symphony, however, which owes its name to the Roman god, brims over with an endless joy of life. The powerful final movement with its combination of fugal technique, rondo and sonata form is quite rightly regarded as a unique compositional achievement in the classical era. The Mozart specialist Carlo Maria Giulini, who only enters the recording studio when he is quite totally sure of a thing, has set down a performance here which does without orchestral fireworks and concentrates on a seemingly endless flow of melody. The orchestral playing is light, airy and unpretentious, the strings as soft as silk – what more could Mozart have wished for.

The Original Studio Album PLUS a Bonus LP of Live Material!
On the cover is Michelangelo's 'The Creation Of Man,' where God reaches out his hand: the intentions of the makers of Fathers And Sons could hardly be more illustrative. The enigmatic message of this album is clearly that these prodigal sons, these one-time gods of the Chicago blues, are to be given a helping hand to their comeback. And this was sorely needed, for although the Chess label had achieved good sales figures one year previously with the LP Electric Mud, they didn't really produce a convincing blues session. In order not to land once again in the pseudo-psychedelic outback with distorted electronic sound and wah-wah effects, the two legendary artists Muddy Waters and Otis Spann were joined by the three musicians who made up the Butterfield Blues Band. With this artistic core of fathers and sons and a few choice side musicians, the resulting blues recording rolled along without a hitch. A whole set of pieces were set down, enough to fill an LP, and a 30-minute live session adds further luster to the excellent studio recordings. The characteristic crisp and raw Waters studio sound is followed by a charismatic stage show which bubbles and boils with a red-hot blues atmosphere.

 Muddy Waters Sings Big Bill
Muddy Waters

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

In 1960, when Muddy Waters recorded this album as a tribute to Big Bill Broonzy two years after his death, he could be sure of Broonzy’s approval. »Oh yeah, Muddy is a real singer of the Blues«, Big Bill, that Mississippi foundation stone, was heard to say early on in Muddy Waters’ career, although the sound of the man 15 years his junior could be likened to new shoots coming out of the gnarled root named the Blues.
Full of confidence after a “Best Of” compilation released on the Chess label in 1959 and his legendary appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, Muddy set down his own Broonzy songs. It goes almost without saying that such successful numbers as “I Feel So Good“ and “Tell Me Baby“ are overflowing with a ‘Chicago feeling‘ which gets right under your skin. Pulsating with the metallic heartbeat of the electric guitar and the gyrating licks which James Cotton conjures out of his harmonica, the cover title amalgamates the individual styles of two top-notch Blues musicians to produce a highly emotional mixture. And let’s not forget the band formed around keyboarder Otis Spann, their fellow musician of many years’ standing. Just listen carefully to this small but excellent ensemble and you will certainly forget the banal term ‘rhythm group‘!

 The Best of Muddy Waters

By the end of the Fifties Muddy Waters had become famous enough to release a record with his own name on the cover. But that it was to be a 'Best of' album was certainly a surprise because the ink had hardly dried on his recording contract with Chess. It was as though the producers had known that with such titles as 'Hoochie Coochie (Man)', 'Honey Bee' and 'I Want You To Love Me Muddy' had come up with blues music which would provide him and numerous cover bands with material for years to come. In those days Waters’ blues did not bow to any particular fashion of the times. Dry and raw, he tells his tales to the crystal-clear, metallic sound of the electric guitar. A rhythm group builds the foundation, the melodic counterpart to the vocals is provided by the harp with cuttingly sharp intrusions or whimpering background. Nothing more is needed to experience a truly original blues feeling and one can be both sad and happy that such authentic blues music is available only on record. That’s how it was in the Seventies, when Chess released a remake of this record. Now here is the 'original'!

MUSSORGSKY/PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION/BYRON JANIS/MINNEAPOLIS SYM ORC (2LP 180g)
This two-LP set includes as a very special bonus the piano-only version of Pictures at an Exhibition cut at 45 RPM. This is how this work was originally composed though no recording of that version has previously been released. The full symphonic version of Pictures at an Exhibition is cut here at 33 1/3. The orchestral version of Mussorgsky’s musical picture gallery has always been one of the most popular works ever heard in concert halls all over the world. Originally written for the piano, the unsuccessful composer never heard the work in all its symphonic glory, although many of his contemporaries had often been tempted to arrange his works. As early as 1891, ten years after his death, Mikhail Tushmalov – a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov – presented a first version. However, it is Maurice Ravel’s orchestral version from 1922 that remains unsurpassed to this day. His arrangement amalgamates the original force and angularity of the piano with the brilliance of a modern orchestra. The transparent and powerful performance by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra is complemented by an equally fascinating version from one of Mercury’s main pianists, Byron Janis. In listening to the two interpretations one after the other it becomes clear as to how closely Ravel remained true to the original version while still managing to imbue his genial orchestral version with his own tonal conception. The solo piano recording, released for the first time on vinyl, will certainly be of special interest to record collectors.

 Emergency Ward
Nina Simone

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed

We can thank our lucky stars that Nina Simone was well aware of her musical environment and enjoyed experimenting with it, despite her notorious eccentric personality. This was the only reason that so much basic repertoire, traditional blues numbers, black work songs and favorite white show melodies – all filled with a deep soul feeling – reached her fans. Emergency Ward! Is no exception. First there is the explosive medley, recorded live, of George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' and David Nelson's 'Today Is A Killer.' Accompanied by a small combo and a gospel choir, Nina Simone ignites an 18-minute blazing bonfire, which loses none of its spiritual fire for even a second. In contrast to the gentle 'Poppies,' extravagantly produced with strings, woodwinds and chorus, is the questioning 'Isn't It A Pity,' arranged for piano. Here, simple, throbbing harmonies are occasionally allowed to swell into clouds of chords, giving Nina Simone the opportunity to show off her highly diversified vocal timbre, which fades away into nothing like an unanswered question. This is an exceptional album filled with a wealth of feeling and one which will leave no one untouched.

Musicians certainly don't have it easy with record companies. First of all they must struggle to even get a contract. Then, when their debut release has proved a success, they are bandied around from one arranger to another in all the recording studios imaginable. But having been treated with such sounds as a snappy combo, meaty bigband, and smoochy string orchestra, there at last comes an opportunity for some artists to be themselves again.
This album wholly concentrates on Nina Simone and demonstrates that she does not need help from anyone else in order to bring her strikingly expressive voice into the limelight. Accompanying her in her songs about loneliness, identity crises, and desires is her faithful friend, the piano, which she masters equally as well as her voice. The piano parts are far more than just casual accompaniments. Varying from number to number, they range from a classical, bluesy sound, to late-Romantic fervour, right up to avantgarde aggression. And yet all these pieces have something in common: filled with bizarre beauty, they portray a complex personality with all its ups and downs.

 Odetta Sings Dylan
Odetta
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

The present album rings in the era of cover versions and appeared at the time when Bob Dylan’s departed from the path of folk singer to travel down the road of ‘electrified’ rocker. The needle barely has to touch the groove before it become quite clear just why this record tops the list of early Dylan cover productions. Two acoustic guitars and a bass are all that Odetta would tolerate to provide a stage for her now swinging, now bluesy ‘original instrument’ - as the black singer described her voice. The rest was taken care of by the genial arrangements which most certainly contributed to the rather taxed 'Tambourine Man' giving a ten-minute long peak performance.
In addition, Odetta renders songs which the great man himself never ever set down. Original versions of 'Baby, I’m In The Mood For You', 'Walking Down The Line' and 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' never appeared in the Sixties. And the songs 'Long Ago, Far Away' and 'Long Time Gone' were never released on any of the official Bob Dylan records. But who needs all this background knowledge to enjoy this music to the full?

Oscar Petersen himself claimed to have made his best recordings MPS. In the label's archives for were lost tapes from Peterson’s heydey. And lo and behold, a number of previously unreleased recordings were discovered which had been taped ''exclusively for my friends'' in the private studio in Villingen in 1965-1968.
These live sessions before a mere handful of listeners proves once again just how at home the musicians felt in the Black Forest villa – as is borne out by the fact that Peterson’s usual trio formation alternated with his stand-in musicians of bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham.
These amazing tracks are available for the very first time on an LP filled with glorious sound.

 Night Train
Oscar Peterson
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed

Real fans have always been in the know: the Oscar Peterson Trio was never better than in the Sixties. Enough said! Quite undeniably it was during this time that the pianist and his partners Ray Brown (bass) and Ed Thipgen (drums) achieved their greatest success – and this success was never quite repeated with a different team of musicians. One of the albums to emerge from this era was Night Train, an album which still today is to be found right at the top of the “best of the best“ lists.
As is only right and proper for a formation made up of black musicians, blues – the bedrock of American jazz – is right at the heart of this music. In addition to a whole series of well-known, swinging numbers which will set your pulse racing such as the peppy C-Jam-Blues or the breathless, racing Honey-Dripper, this album also contains several dreamy ballads of extraordinary beauty. And if your spine isn’t set deliciously tingling when listening to Georgia On My Mind or the famous Hymn of Freedom, then it’s high time to visit a doctor! This auspicious compilation containing Peterson’s most important numbers also deserves praise for its excellent tonal quality and the high standard of the pressing. But why waste words – the fans know all that anyway!

When the contract with Verve was terminated at the beginning of 1964, Mercury’s producers and owners endeavored to find new openings for Oscar Peterson who was committed to the piano trio. Flamenco Puro Live

The Germans have their male-voice choirs, the French the musette, the Scottish the bagpipes, and the Spanish their fandangillo, solear and tango – or to put it more concisely – flamenco. This music is far more than just folkmusic passed down from generation to generation for it combines strict dance form with a free vocal melody and virtuoso guitar playing. Fame equal to that of a toreador is reaped by the few who have mastered this form of art.
Paco Peña and his Ensemble rank among these few, and it goes without saying that no recording studio in the world can do real justice to the fascination of flamenco. As the short sub-title “puro” suggests, this LP certainly lives up to expectations in encapturing an electrifying live atmosphere. Thrilling flourishes on the guitar, the sharp clack of the castanets, the rapid zapateados (heeltaps), and the typical, almost harsh singing are reproduced so clearly and spatially that one cannot help looking around to see where the musicians are standing. Those of a suspicious nature can be sure here that the “Phase-4” Process is anything but a publicity stunt.

It isn't hard to make the case for Patti Smith as a punk rock progenitor based on her debut album, which anticipated the new wave by a year or so: the simple, crudely played rock & roll, featuring Lenny Kaye's rudimentary guitar work, the anarchic spirit of Smith's vocals, and the emotional and imaginative nature of her lyrics - all prefigure the coming movement as it evolved on both sides of the Atlantic.

 Summertime
Paul Desmond

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed

Seventeen years a member of the Dave Burbeck Quartet, a long and highly successful career, thousands of miles of travelling all over the globe, more than 50 LPs, and that all-time favourite “Take Five” to boot - and then Paul Desmond decides to go it alone in 1967! Unfortunately, he was granted only a few years in which to concentrate on his solo career before his untimely death - and we fans have only a few LPs to listen to and enjoy his soft and gentle timbre and his rhythmic qualities which, thank heavens, are not dominated by the ‘man at the piano’.
Don Sebesky knew how to enhance the highly varied compilation “Summertime” with Paul Desmond’s tenor saxophone. The numbers range from Louis Armstrong’s “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” (Satchmo would probably have some trouble in recognizing his theme!) to the Beatles’ White Album and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”. Film music such as “Lady In Cement” and the waltz “Someday My Prince Will Come” offer Paul Desmond an opportunity to display his talents and to sparkle with his special hallmark of playing tricky 5/4 and 7/4 metres. The climax he has reserved for the final number: his version of Gershwin’s “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess” is one of the most lovely and lyrical ever – and completely free of schmaltz.
This CTI album from Paul Desmond is, despite the large number of horns, a real pleasure - thanks to that magician in the recording studio, Rudy von Gelder, whose genius has captured this large ensemble on tape for our enjoyment.

Paul Desmond

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed

When Paul Desmond wanted to create a sequel to the monster hit “Take Five,” he did just that! The title tune of from this 1963 recording is a reworking of the classic theme in 10/8 time. Certainly this should be taken as a hint that it was not Dave Brubeck but Paul Desmond who was the composer of this 'million seller'. Desmond and Jim Hall’s collaboration on this quartet project is one of the finest recordings they ever produced. These guys all listen so well; never stepping on each other and always adding a touch or a texture that really defines great jazz! All the while, one is curious as to the clear part-writing, and the wealth of ideas emanating from the soloists. The atmosphere is relaxed, and this conveys itself to the listener even after almost half a century. This Speakers Corner re-issue is first class all the way and tremendous sonic upgrade from the original LP we had on hand. Take Ten is a must have LP…a truly great re-mastering on ultra quiet vinyl.

Universally known as the King of the Mambo, Pérez Prado created a unique style that appealed to dancers from all backgrounds.
Prado played the piano, but was often more in his element as the focal point of the audience's excitement; he leaped, kicked, danced, shouted, grunted, and exhorted his musicians with a dynamic stage presence that put many more sedate conductors and bandleaders to shame.

PROKOFIEV/ROMEO & JULIET SUITES 1 & 2/STANISLAW SKROWACZIEWSKI - MINNEAPOLIS SYMPHONY (MERCURY)
As is widely known, ballet suites are the 'little sisters' of large ballet compositions that have been compiled by the composer mostly at a later date for performance in the concert hall. Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet is another story however. Strangely enough, his two Suites were given their first performance before the premiere of the complete ballet. The applause can still be heard echoing through the world of music. This music is one of the pillars of a good record collection - and with good reason. Both Suites contain a wealth of delightful melodies that are given substance by colorful harmonic writing. Just how ideal Prokofiev can sound is brought to us by Stanislaw Skrowacziewski and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. In the first Suite he lets his musicians sweep with elan through the Burlesque, the splendor of the Love Theme is full of lyrical intensity and rises to a forceful climax filled with sharp dissonances in Death of Tybalt. The Second Suite, too, is of the very highest standard, both from an artistic and recording point of view. The characteristic themes and motifs are well contoured and brought to the fore while embedded in a fresh and natural carpet of sound which is sometimes filled with immense warmth. It is clearly noticeable that all participants have given much time and thought to this first-rate production. And the listener will certainly enjoy giving over a good portion of his leisure time to this delightful music.
