Ranked 6/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Marvin Gayes Whats Going On was a landmark recording and is considered one of the greatest albums ever made. Rolling Stone named it Album Of The Year when it came out and, in 2003, it was ranked number 6, the highest for a non-rock album, in Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. Originally, the title cut was recorded as a single, and Motown chief Berry Gordy refused to release it, citing that it was too personal and political. What's Going On became Motown's fastest-selling single at that point, going to the number one spot on the R&B charts for five weeks and number two for three weeks on the Pop listings, which lead Gordy to request a full album's worth of material.
What's Going On, the single, was recorded in June of 1970. The remainder of the album was recorded in March-May of 1971 and was released on May 21st of that year. It was produced entirely by Marvin Gaye.

Ranked 90/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Stevie Wonder established an incredible precedent between 1971 and 1976, releasing six of the most groundbreaking, genre-blurring, genius albums ever made. Composed and written at a time when his marriage was his collapsing, the largely uplifting and eminently soulful Talking Book is arguably the best of those trailblazing records. Wonder manages to not only to restore faith in love, he also includes smart political commentary, personal-is-political messages, empowering statements, and exorcises the frustrations associated with heartbreak. Few efforts are more emotionally intense and consistently enriching.
In addition to striking diversity and passionate reach, Talking Book continues to speak to listeners nearly 40 years later because of how much of Wonder himself is invested in the songs. With everlasting proclamations like “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will be Forever)” and “You and I (We Can Conquer the World,” Wonder transcends his excruciating pain and clung to the concept of love as a higher power. Similarly, he stakes an equal part of himself in fare that confronts woe head-on (“Tuesday Heartbreak”) and reels off one of the most famous ballads (“You Are the Sunshine of My Life”) in history.
Musically, Wonder is clearly tapped into a spiritual plane, the arrangements encompassing an array of moods and styles: rocking and funky (“Superstition”), mellow and poignant, grooving and exuberant. Jeff Beck’s guitar solo on “Lookin’ for Another Pure Love” takes the song to a new level, and guests David Sanborn, Buzzy Fenton, and Ray Parker Jr. round out what’s an almost impossibly perfectly unified album.
Track Listing:
1. You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
2. Maybe Your Baby
3. You And I (We Can Conquer The World)

5. You've Got It Bad Girl

 Innervisions
Stevie Wonder

Ranked 23/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The sixteenth album by American musician Stevie Wonder, released August 3, 1973 on Motown Records; a landmark recording of his "classic period".The nine tracks of Innervisions encompass a wide range of themes and issues: from drug abuse in "Too High," through social anger in "Living for the City," to love in the ballads "All in Love is Fair" and "Golden Lady."
As with many of Stevie Wonder's albums the lyrics, composition and production are almost entirely his own work, with the ARP synthesizer used prominently throughout the album. This instrument was a common motif among musicians of the time because of its ability to construct a complete sound environment. Wonder was the first black artist to experiment with this technology on a mass scale, and Innervisions was hugely influential on the subsequent future of commercial black music. He also played all or virtually all instruments on six of the album's nine tracks, making most of Innervisions a representative one-man band.

The Velvet Underground's self-titled third album was in many ways the debut of a new band as John Cale had departed by this time and was replaced by Doug Yule. Cale's more experimental style was replaced by Sterling Morrison's eloquent guitar accompaniment which allowed the human side of Lou Reed's songwriting to emerge like never before. Unobstructed by walls of sonic noise, Reed's insight and genius really shines here.

Captain Beefheart
$14.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed

Beefheart's first proper studio album is a much more accessible, pop-inflected brand of blues-rock than the efforts that followed in the late '60s -- which isn't to say that it's exactly normal and straightforward. Featuring Ry Cooder on guitar, this is blues-rock gone slightly askew, with jagged, fractured rhythms, soulful, twisting vocals from Van Vliet, and more doo wop, soul, straight blues, and folk-rock influences than he would employ on his more avant-garde outings. "Zig Zag Wanderer," "Call on Me," and "Yellow Brick Road" are some of his most enduring and riff-driven songs, although there's plenty of weirdness on tracks like "Electricity" and "Abba Zaba."

For their second release and first out of the shadow of Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground stripped production values down to a minimum and turned out a primitive rock & roll masterpiece. Mirror Man
Captain Beefheart

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed

The fifth studio album by Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band. It contains material which was recorded in 1967 for Buddah Records, and which was originally intended for release as part of an abandoned project entitled It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper. Much of the material from this project was subsequently re-recorded and released through a different label as Strictly Personal (1968). The tapes from the original sessions, however, remained under the care of Buddah, who took four of the unissued tunes and released them as Mirror Man in 1971. The record sleeve features an erroneous claim that it had been "recorded one night in Los Angeles in 1965."
The album is dominated by three long, blues-rooted jams featuring uncharacteristically sparse lyrical accompaniment from Beefheart. A fourth tune, the eight-minute "Kandy Korn", is an earlier version of a track that appears on Strictly Personal. In 1999, Buddha Records issued an expanded version of the album entitled The Mirror Man Sessions, which features five additional tracks taken from the abandoned tapes

Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) is the first official compilation album by The Rolling Stones, released on 28 March 1966, on London Records in the US and on 4 November 1966, by Decca Records in the UK. The two releases featured different cover art and track listing. The front cover for the American release was used for the rear photo on the UK edition.
The album cover photo (US edition) was shot at Franklin Canyon Park in Los Angeles, California.
Reaching #3 on the US charts, where it remained for two years, Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) proved to be a big smash and currently remains a popular Rolling Stones retrospective.
The UK Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) includes tracks released after the American edition appeared. The Rolling Stones' debut 1963 single, a cover of Chuck Berry's "Come On", was included, but its more successful follow-up, "I Wanna Be Your Man" — composed by rivals (although in reality as friends) Lennon–McCartney — was left off the album.

The Rolling Stones is the debut album by The Rolling Stones, released by Decca Records in the UK on 16 April 1964. The American edition of the LP, with a slightly different track list, came out on London Records on 30 May 1964, with the added title England's Newest Hit Makers.
Recorded at Regent Sound Studios in London over the course of five days in January and February 1964, The Rolling Stones was produced by then-managers Andrew Loog Oldham and Eric Easton.
The majority of the tracks reflect the band's love for R&B. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (whose professional name until 1978 omitted the "s" in his surname) were fledgling songwriters during early 1964, contributing only one original composition to the album: "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)". Two songs are credited to "Nanker Phelge" - a pseudonym the band used for group compositions from 1963 to 1965. Phil Spector and Gene Pitney both contributed to the recording sessions, and are referred to as "Uncle Phil and Uncle Gene" in the subtitle of the Phelge instrumental "Now I've Got a Witness."
The album cover photo was taken by Nicholas Wright. The cover bears no title or identifying information other than the photo and the Decca logo - an "unheard of" design concept originated by manager Andrew Oldham.
Upon its release, The Rolling Stones became one of 1964's biggest sellers in the UK, staying at #1 for twelve weeks.
Track Listing:
1. Not Fade Away 2. Route 66 3. I Just Want to Make Love to You 4. Honest I Do 5. Now I've Got a Witness 6. Little by Little 7. I'm a King Bee 8. Carol 9. Tell Me 10. Can I Get a Witness 11. You Can Make It If You Try 12. Walking the Dog

The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by American rock band The Velvet Underground and vocal collaborator Nico. It was originally released in March 1967 by Verve Records. Recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, The Velvet Underground & Nico would gain notoriety for its experimentalist performance sensibilities, as well as the focus on controversial subject matter expressed in many of their songs including drug abuse, prostitution, sadism and masochism and sexual deviancy.
Though a commercial failure upon release, the record has since become one of the most influential and critically acclaimed rock albums in history, appearing at number thirteen on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time as well as being added to the 2006 National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.

Ranked 69/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Arguably the best and most notorious of the blaxploitation films of the '70s, starring Ron O'Neal as a Harlem drug dealer out to make one last big score before he cleans up his act for good. You could say Curtis Mayfield's accompanying landmark 1972 soundtrack is the real star here though. Superfly is a gripping morality tale set to funky grooves and plaintive vocals, the absolute zenith of Mayfield's socially aware songwriting.

Track Listing:
1. Too High

3. Living For The City
4. Golden Lady
5. Higher Ground
6. Jesus Children of America

Captain Beefheart

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed

The fourth album by Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band, released in 1970 on Frank Zappa's Straight Records label. The follow-up to Trout Mask Replica (1969), it is regarded by some critics and listeners as superior, and was Van Vliet's personal favorite. Don Van Vliet said that the title is an encouragement to "get rid of the labels", and to evaluate things according to their merits rather than according to superficial labels (or "decals"). Musicians on the album were Don Van Vliet, vocals; Bill Harkleroad, guitar; Mark Boston, bass; Art Tripp, marimba, drums, and percussion; and John French, drums. French had been arranger and musical director on Trout Mask Replica. Van Vliet ejected French from the group—both figuratively and literally, by throwing him down a flight of stairs—shortly after Trout Mask Replica was completed, and these roles passed to guitarist Bill Harkleroad. French returned to the group shortly before recording began.

Ranked 33/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Ever since they rocketed out of Queens in 1974, the Ramones have inspired countless kids worldwide to pick up guitars and rock. Bringing a bubblegum sensibility to the fast-and-hard mentality, their primal sound is considered a blueprint for all things resembling snotty, catchy, ear-bleeding punk rock.
This is the album that started it all! Recorded in around a week for a little over $6,000, the Ramones self-titled 1976 debut is loud, fast, hook laden and unadorned, all characteristics that help make it arguably the best and most influential album to come out of New York's heralded '70s punk scene. With tracks like "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Beat on the Brat," "Judy Is A Punk" and "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," for its first four songs, it's hard to argue otherwise.

Ranked 58/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The third album by Captain Beefheart (a.k.a. Don Van Vliet) and his Magic Band, released in June 1969. Produced by Beefheart's friend and former schoolmate Frank Zappa, it was originally released as a double album on Zappa's Straight Records label. Combining elements of blues, avant-garde, free jazz and other genres of American music, the album is regarded as an important work of experimental music and a major influence on genres such as alternative rock and post-punk.
Most of Trout Mask Replica was recorded in March 1969 at Whitney Studios in Los Angeles, California. The lineup of The Magic Band at this time consisted of Bill Harkleroad and Jeff Cotton on guitar, Mark Boston on bass guitar, Victor Hayden on bass clarinet, and John French on drums and percussion. Beefheart played several brass and woodwind instruments (including saxophone, musette, and hunting horn) and contributed most of the vocal parts, with Zappa and various members of the band providing occasional vocals and narration. The well-rehearsed Magic Band recorded all instrumental tracks[a 1] for Trout Mask Replica in a single six-hour recording session; Van Vliet's vocal and horn tracks were laid down over the next few days. Upon release in the US, Trout Mask Replica sold poorly and failed to chart. It was more successful in the UK, where it spent a week on the charts, at #21

 Shiny Beast
Captain Beefheart
$14.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed
|
So titled because the original album, simply titled Bat Chain Puller, had to be ditched and rerecorded after a legal tuzzle involving Frank Zappa's manager, Shiny Beast turned out to be manna from heaven for those feeling Beefheart had lost his way on his two Mercury albums. Then again, what else could be assumed with a song titled "Tropical Hot Dog Night" that sounds like what happened when Beefheart encountered Miami disco and decided to make something of it? When it comes to singing, though, he's still the atypical growler, snarler and more of lore, conjuring up more wonderfully odd lyrical stories than can easily be measured, while the album as a whole gets steadily more and more bent. "You Know You're a Man" is at once straightforward and incredibly weird when it comes to love and gender, while other standouts include "Bat Chain Puller," a steady chugger that feels like a goofy death march, and the nervy freak of "Owed T'Alex." As for the Magic Band in general, keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman, guitarists Jeff Tepper and Richard Redus and drummer Robert Williams lay down the business with appropriately gone aplomb, as a listen to "Suction Prints" will demonstrate.
Track Listing:
1. The Floppy Boot Stomp 2. Tropical Hot Dog Night 3. Ice Rose 4. Harry Irene 5. You Know You're A Man 6. Bat Chain Puller 7. When I See Mommy I Feel Like A Mummy 8. Owed T'Alex 9. Candle mambo 10. Love Lies 11. Suction Prints 12. Apes-Ma

 Release Of An Oath
Electric Prunes

The second album on which composer David Axelrod and producer Dave Hassinger usurped the name of the Electric Prunes (the band which recorded "I Had Too Much Too Dream Last Night" had long since split -- their names and likenesses are nowhere to be found on this LP) is much less notorious than its predecessor, Mass in F Minor. This is a shame, because it's actually the better album by far. Mass in F Minor is a halting, muddy attempt at combining rock and classical instrumentation, an idea that's better explored on Release of an Oath. Songs like the liturgical "Holy Are You" and the mostly instrumental "General Confessional" combine swirling string and woodwind parts with heavy guitar and organ in a more organic and cohesive fashion than before. Musically complex and intriguing without being nearly as pretentious as a capsule description might indicate, Release of an Oath is a remarkable piece of early American progressive rock.

3. General confessional
4. Individual confessional

Road to Ruin shows a more "classic" pop sound as well as a shift to a more serious personality to the music, a theme that would remain in later albums, most notably the band's fifth album End of the Century (1980). Leave Home
Ramones
$14.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed
|
Ever since they rocketed out of Queens in 1974, the Ramones have inspired countless kids worldwide to pick up guitars and rock. Bringing a bubblegum sensibility to the fast-and-hard mentality, their primal sound is considered a blueprint for all things resembling snotty, catchy, ear-bleeding punk rock.
The Ramones' follow-up to their astounding self-titled debut showcases a slightly poppier sound but with the same winning results. Originally released in 1977, Leave Home features the classic Ramone's cuts "Pinhead," "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" and "Commando."

 Mirror Man
Captain Beefheart
$13.99
Vinyl LP Reissue - Sealed
|
Track Listing:
1. Tarotplane 19:00
2. Kandy Korn 8:00
3. 25th Century Quaker 9:50
4. Mirror Man 15:38

Ranked 292/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
For their second release and first out of the shadow of Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground stripped production values down to a minimum and turned out a primitive rock & roll masterpiece. Under its distorted and abrasive sound are some of Lou Reed's greatest songs including the title track and Here She Comes Now and the album went on to become a major influence on punk and experimental rock.

The fifth studio album by the American punk rock band The Ramones. It was released on February 4, 1980 and was produced by Phil Spector. After Spector became interested in the band, he offered to produce their next record. Vocalist Joey Ramone was an avid fan of Spector's early work, including albums by many girl groups and Let It Be by The Beatles. As an attempt at a Top 40 record and mainstream acceptance, the songs are more "produced" and longer in duration, averaging around three minutes.

 Think (about it)
Lyn Collins
$14.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
At the time of the release of Think (About It) in 1972, Lyn Collins had been a member of James Brown's performing revue for about two years. Her full-throated voice had earned her the nickname "the Female Preacher" and a shot to record her own album. Of course, the Godfather was in the producer's chair, writing four of the nine tracks, directing the J.B.'s as they laid down their usual funky grooves, and liberally adding vocals throughout. The title track is the main point of interest here; from Collins' throat-ripping vocals to the track's nasty groove to Brown's background interjections, this is a killer. "Just Won't Do Right" is a good doo wop-ish ballad with some churchy organ and great vocals by Collins and Brown, "Wheels of Life" is a nice little groove that sounds like vintage Aretha Franklin, and "Women's Lib" is a very slow ballad that lets Collins show off her anguished yowl of a vocal to its fullest.--Allmusic

 I Want You
Marvin Gaye
$14.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed
|
The thirteenth studio album by American soul musician Marvin Gaye, released March 16, 1976, on Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place throughout 1975 and 1976 at Motown Recording Studios, also known as Hitsville West, and Gaye's personal studio Marvin's Room in Los Angeles, California. The album has often been noted by critics for producer Leon Ware's exotic, low-key production and the erotic, sexual themes in his and Gaye's songwriting. The album's cover artwork adapts neo-mannerist artist Ernie Barnes's famous painting The Sugar Shack (1971).
I Want You consisted of Marvin Gaye's first recorded studio material since his highly successful and well-received album Let's Get It On (1973). While it marked a change in musical direction for Gaye, departing from his trademark Motown and doo-wop-influenced sound for funky, light-disco soul, the album maintained and expanded on his previous work's sexual themes. I Want You has earned retrospective recognition from writers and music critics as one of Gaye's most controversial works and influential to such musical styles as disco, quiet storm, R&B, and neo soul.
Track Listing:
1 I Want You - (vocal)
2 Come Live With Me Angel
3 After The Dance - (instrumental)
4 Feel All My Love Inside
5 I Want You (intro jam)
6 All the Way Around

 Across 110th Street
Bobby Womack
$14.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed
|
One of the few surviving links to the pre-Soul/R&B era, Bobby Womack - who was originally discovered as a teenager singing Gospel music by the late Sam Cooke - nowadays enjoys full-blown “Living Legend” status. Blessed with one of the warmest, most readily-identifiable voices in Soul music, he carved out his reputation with a series of classic albums and singles in the early 70s, re-emerging again in the 80s with his career masterpieces, The Poet and The Poet II, the latter achieving platinum status in Europe alone.
This unique package concentrates on the early 70s, and is built around the iconic, award-winning original soundtrack to Across 110th Street (1972), the critically-acclaimed - albeit violent, bloodthirsty and deeply disturbing - Blaxploitation movie which starred Anthony Quinn, Yaphet Kotto and Anthony Franciosa. Perhaps Womack’s most celebrated album, this compelling OST remains the most important soundtrack of the genre, the powerful title song later featuring heavily in both Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 homage to Blaxploitation, Jackie Brown, and Ridley Scott’s 2007 opus, American Gangster.
Womack has enjoyed a long, rich career and still retains a strong cult status in the UK and Europe. He continues to record and tour sporadically and after battling ill-health in recent years, a new album is scheduled for release in June. The album is co-produced by Damon Albarn and Richard Russell, who also produced Gil Scott Heron's acclaimed final album.

 Careless Love
Madeleine Peyroux
$29.99
Gain 2 Ultra Analog 1/2 Speed Mastered 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin High Definition Vinyl LP -Sealed
|
Peyroux is the real deal. She brushes off comparisons to Billie Holiday, but it's certainly not bad company to keep. This is a beautiful record flowing with sparse arrangements and sultry vocals. If you like Norah...wait until you hear this! The 12 songs found on Carless Love feature a mix of acoustic blues, country ballads and torch songs showcasing Peyroux's sultry alto. Highlights include Dont' Wait Too Long composed by Perouyx, producer Larry Klien (of Joni Mitchell fame) and Jesse Harris (best know for his contributions to Norah Jones' hit album, Come Away With Me). Also exemplary are Peyroux's warm renditions of Leonard Cohen's Dance Me to the End of Love and a lightly-swinging arrangement of Bob Dylan's You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You go.
Track Listing:
1. Dance Me To The End Of Love
2. Don't Wait Too Long
3. Don't Cry Baby
4. You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go

Curtis Mayfield

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed

Curtis/Live! is Curtis Mayfield’s first live album, after leaving The Impressions. Originally released in May 1971 as a double LP on Mayfield's Curtom label (distributed through Neil Bogart's Buddah Records), the album's twelve tracks, along with Mayfield's interstitial raps on the politics of the day — were recorded at Paul Colby's Bitter End nightclub in New York City. According to John Abbey, who at the beginning of the 1970s was editor of the UK magazine Blues & Soul, Mayfield and his band's first set at a Bitter End date in January 1971 comprised the bulk of the music presented here. Mixed primarily with Eddie Kramer at Electric Lady Studios, the album features Master Henry Gibson playing percussion, Craig McMullen on rhythm guitar, Joseph "Lucky" Scott on bass, and Tyrone McCullen on drums.

Curtis Mayfield - vocals, guitar

Ranked 73/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Back in Black is the seventh Australian and sixth internationally released studio album by the band.
Released on 25 July 1980, Back in Black was the first AC/DC album recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who died on 19 February 1980 at the age of 33, and was dedicated to him. The band considered disbanding following Scott's death, but they ultimately decided to continue, with encouragement from Scott's parents, and shortly thereafter hired Brian Johnson as their new lead singer and lyricist. Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had previously worked with AC/DC on Highway to Hell, was again brought in to produce. The album was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and Electric Lady Studios in New York, where the album was also mixed.

The Meters' third album for Reprise, Fire on the Bayou, is their best record for the label for a variety of reasons, not least of which is the high quality of material throughout the record and a focus from the band that keeps the music simmering, even if it never quite reaches a boil. That's not a bad thing, because the music IS simmering, always hot and enticing, never lukewarm or too cool. --Stephen Thomas Erlewine.

The Meters

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, New Orleans's Meters churned out irresistible funk instrumentals that were distilled to their essence and intended to get people up and shaking. When the Josie label went bankrupt in 1971, the band moved over to the Reprise label and began to broaden their horizons, expanding their sonic palette and putting more emphasis on vocals. Cabbage Alley, their Reprise debut, finds them experimenting with tropical sounds ("Soul Island"), Allman Brothers-style guitar leads ("Stay Away"), Neil Young covers ("Birds"), and socially conscious lyrics ("Lonesome and Unwanted People"). --Marc Greilsamer.

 So Long So Wrong
Alison Krauss
$39.99
Gain 2 Ultra Analog 1/2 Speed Mastered 180 Gram Audiophile High Definition Vinyl LP -2 LPs Sealed
|
Available for the very first time on vinyl. This is the best AKUS album to date. (AKUS is the band's own acronym for Alison Krauss & Union Station). The best songs, the best playing, the best singing and the best sound! This must have 2-LP set gets more addictive with every play. Call it bluegrass or call it acoustic pop, either way Alison Krauss and Union Station have created an incredible montage of music. As usual, it is Alison's beautiful vocals that gives it that high, lonesome sound.
There are thirteen vocal songs and one instrumental on this two-record set. Krauss is the lead vocalist on eight of the songs and Union Station members share the other lead vocals. The virtuoso musicians comprising the group are Barry Bales (acoustic bass), Ron Block (banjo, guitar), Adam Steffey (mandolin), and Dan Tyminski (guitar). Of course Krauss started her career as a violinist (fiddler to the bluegrass world) and she doesn't leave that instrument out either. Due to the unmatched resolution of the Gain 2 Ultra Analog Cutting System, all the acoustic instruments and voices on the record are reproduced with an exceptional sense of space and clarity.
The tunes are mostly new material and alternate from bluegrass to acoustic pop. The standouts on the album are Alison's numbers: It Doesn't Matter, Looking in the Eyes of Love, and the gospel There is a Reason. These are all quiet, reflective pieces with the haunting, almost angelic quality of Krauss' voice demonstrated to its fullest. The harmony singing on every cut shows off the vocal prowess of the entire ensemble. The title track in particular stands out for its use of harmony and incredible accurate presentation of acoustic instruments. The male vocalists are superb in their own right and each of the band members has the spotlight somewhere on the album. MFSL

 Raising Sand
Robert Plant/Alison Krauss
$19.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
For Alison Krauss, musical collaboration has been a way of life. Her latest musical collaboration, Raising Sand, is an astonishing album recorded in tandem with rock vocalist and songwriter Robert Plant. Raising Sand is their first recorded endeavor, and will prove revelatory to fans and the media on two counts: first that it happened at all, and, more importantly, that it is as successful and illuminating as it is.
From its embryonic, conceptual stages well before any music materialized the mere idea of Raising Sand held infinite fascination for both its creators and those around them. As word spread of an impending musical collaboration between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, imaginations ran wild. Two artists, each at the pinnacle of their respective pantheons, Robert and Alison have seemingly little in common. But just below the surface, an elemental understanding flowed between them, waiting to be tapped...
Under the careful sonic stewardship of producer T Bone Burnett, Raising Sand is pitched three steps beyond some cosmic collision of early urban blues, spacious West Texas country, and the unrealized potential of the folk-rock revolution. Shockingly evocative, it is an album that uncovers popular musics elemental roots while sounding effortlessly, breathtakingly modern. Despite hailing from distinctly different backgrounds, Plant and Krauss share a maverick spirit and willingness to extend the boundaries of their respective genres. Raising Sand finds Plant and Krauss functioning as sympathetic equals: creating a powerful new sound from both their common musical ground and their unrivaled sense of empathy

Eye in the Sky (Speakers Corner)
The Alan Parsons Project
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Unimpressed and untouched by the glorification of individuals so typical for the music business, the Alan Parsons Project proved that even without spectacular light shows, rock celebrities in the band or self-composed songs it was possible to rise to stardom. Alan Parsons, who first took up an apprenticeship as a sound engineer at EMI and was later responsible for several Paul McCartney productions and the Pink Floyd album 'Dark Side Of The Moon' at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, drew upon his experience in order to further his solo career. While the co-producer Eric Woolfson wrote songs, Parsons who had an uncanny feeling for sound conjured up synthetic and natural sounds.
As with all albums from the early years, 'Eye In The Sky' is inspired by important topics of the times. True to the 'no-future lifestyle' of the 80s, the songs impart a somewhat depressive character which serves as a stark contrast to the steely rock rhythms, free from electronic gimmicks. In addition one finds addictive harmony in the vocal polyphony ('Gemini'), blaring brass with a Spanish rhythm ('Silence And I') and a velvety string sound ('Old And Wise'). All in all a great achievement by the British wizard of sound at the mixing console.
Musicians:
- Alan Parsons (keyboards)
- Eric Woolfson (keyboards, vocal)
- Andrew Powell (arranger, conductor)
- Ian Bairnson (guitar)
- Mel Collins (saxophone)
- David Paton (bass, guitar, vocal)
- Stuart Elliot (drums, percussion)
Recording: 1981 at Abbey Road Studios, London, by Alan Parsons
Production: Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson
About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s – or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky“), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects – excluding the exception above – and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.
