Desert Rain (Not Sealed Seam Split)
The Darrow Mosley Band
$24.99
Vinyl EP 10"
|
VERY limited 10" on Shagrat featuring three tracks from the Darrow Mosley Band. A collaboration between Bob Mosley (Moby Grape) and Chris Darrow (Kaleidoscope) recorded in 1973. Packaged in a suitably mind-blowing sleeve by legendary psychedelic designer John Hurford (IT, OZ, Dandelion Records etc) and complete with inserts from Chris Darrow this EP is an absolute must for fans of Moby Grape and Kaleidoscope everywhere.
The band was a vehicle for the prodigious talents of Bob Mosley (lead vocals, bass guitar) and Chris Darrow (lead vocals, guitar).
Mosley had been an integral member of Moby Grape, one of the greatest California bands of the late 60s. A quintet comprising five talented musicians who not could play like demons, but were also equally skilled as singers and songwriters - joining Bob, were guitarists Peter Lewis and Skip Spence, Jerry Miller on lead guitar and Don Stevenson on drums. After a superb but sadly over-hyped debut LP that captured better than most the brief psychedelic glory of the Haight Ashbury era (and is now rightly regarded as a classic), they had spectacularly blown apart during the making of their sophomore set WOW, which saw the exit of the visionary Spence. Regrouping in its aftermath as a quartet, they had released the undervalued 69 which saw them mining a more country vein, but following a tour of Europe Mosley quit and in a surprise move briefly joined the US marines!
In 1971 the original members got back together to record the excellent 20 Granite Creek which opened in fine style with Bob's classic,'Gypsy Wedding' - sadly the reunion was brief with all the old wounds and rivalries soon stymiing any chance of recapturing any former glories and Mose quit again releasing a fine debut solo LP on Reprise.
Darrow had been a founding member of the wildly exotic Kaleidoscope, the hugely talented Claremont-based quintet that subsequently has been recognised as one of the first rock groups to play 'world music' - an outfit that blended many different styles from pyschedelic rock, blues and folk with country, cajun, turkish and cab calloway flavours. Chris played guitar, fiddle, bass and mandolin in a combo of multi-instrumentalists, that also featured the likes of soloman feldthouse and david lindley.
Chris quit Kaleidoscope after their second LP, A Beacon From Mars and joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band just in time to appear in the musical Western Paint Your Wagon with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. He then formed the Corvettes who backed up Linda Ronstadt.. As well as playing in these bands and releasing a series of fine solo albums, Chris had also made a name for himself as a sideman for the likes of Leonard Cohen and John Fahey.
In 1973 both Chris and Bob decided they wanted to be in a band again and their mutual manager Michael O'Connor suggested they form a group together - drawing on the energy and style of vintage Stones and Faces and adding more than a dash of the prevalent SoCal country rock scene to the mix, Bob and Chris were joined by lead guitarist Frank Reckard (subsequently in Emmylou Harris's Band for 14 years), keyboard player Loren Newkirk and drummer Johnny Craviotto (Ry Cooder, Arlo Guthrie, Buffy St Marie) - they cut 3 songs to try and get Warner Bros interested.
Sadly Warner passed on the demos and they have lain unheard till now - the A-side, 'Albuquerque rainbow' is a crunchy rocker featuring Darrow on lead vocals and originally debuted on his eponymous second album done for UA. The flipside has Bob Mosley as lead vocalist - a treat for all those who already know what a masterful singer this norse god can be - first up is a soulful, smouldering version of the Temptations' 'i wish it would rain' that also boasts some dexterous picking from Reckard. the EP closes with a new version of Bob's exquisite 'Beautiful Day' originally done for the Grape's 69 record.
The band split soon after but these recordings are an integral link in the chain that binds Moby Grape with Fine Wine and the Ducks (Neil Young's legendary summer of 77 Santa Cruz bar band)- Darrow would go on to record a series of excellent solo albums and participate in a couple of Kaleidoscope reunions. Bob and John Craviotta would hook up with Jerry Miller for Fine Wine and then form the rhythm section of the aforementioned Ducks.

Venom

With over 25 years of touring and recording Venom returns with Hell, the follow up to their 2006 album Black Metal. If success was measured by influence wielded on those that follow, then Venom would be one of the biggest acts in the world. Lauded as inventors of thrash, speed and power metal, the band even created a new genre of metal, death metal and were major influences on the likes of Metallica and Slayer. The nature of Venoms high-pitch guitars, harsh vocals, use of pseudonyms and unrelenting emphasis on satanic lyrics and imagery is considered the template for the subgenres later successes, and arguably for the broader extreme metal movement in general.
Venom formed in late 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Coming to prominence towards the end of the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal,' Venom are widely regarded as highly influential, particularly for their first two albums, Welcome To Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982). The title of Venom's second album would become influential and definitive enough to describe an entire subgenre called black metal, a category under which the band is most commonly referred.

Jack Yarber began his professional music career in high school, appearing alongside high school friend and future Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Jimbo Mathus in the Corinth, Mississippi, based Johnny Vomit % the Dry Heaves. Yarber played drums in the outfit, which credited him as Johnny Goopa.
In the summer of 1987, Yarber moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to play music with his cousin. Yarber and his cousin played together using a number of band names, eventually releasing a new-wave 7 under the name, The End. The tracks You Never Called and People Talk were recorded at Phillips Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. That vinyl single marked Yarber's first appearance on record. By 1989 the two had diverged musically and Yarber's cousin left town, effectively ending their partnership.
Following the breakup of The End, Yarber's encounter with fellow musician Greg Cartwright led to the formation of the Compulsive Gamblers. Desptie recording two 7 albums and a handful of home recordings, the band was unable to garner record lable interest until after he success of their next band, the Oblivians. The Oblivians formed in 1993 as as side project to the Compulsive Gamblers, and included former Gambler Greg Cartwright, as well as future Goner Records founder, Eric Friedl. The members of the Oblivians all shared writing and recording responsibilities. Each member supplied vocals, guitar work, and percussion on albums and switched between instruments during live shows. The Oblivians lasted from 1993 until 1998, at which time Yarber and Cartwright left the band to reform the Compulsive Gamblers. The second incarnation of the Gamblers lasted form 1998 to 2003, when the bandmembers again went seperate ways.
After pursuing a brief solo career, Yarber teamed up with Scott Bomar to form the Tearjerkers. As Bomar became more and more involved with film scoring, Yarber began to take a more active role in the band, ultimately taking over as lead songwriter after Bomar's departure. With Yarber in control of the group, the band was rechristened the Tennessee Tearjerkers. At the same time as Yarber was writing songs with the Tearjerkers, he was also contributing in various ways to a number of side projects including, the Knaughty Knights, the Limes, and South Filthy which included collaborations with longtime associates Walter Daniels and Monsieur Jeffrey Evans.

Lou Donaldson

Vinyl LP Reissue - Sealed

This album is from 1967 same year as Lou recorded the classic "Alligator Bogaloo" and this album stands the comparison with the Bogaloo album. The only change here is that George Benson was replaced by a young Jimmy Ponder. Ponder is still ,sadly enough, quite unknown to the big audience..his playing here is extremely pleasing and he "lifts" the sometimes to often played "The shadow of your smile" to another level with a beautiful solo.
Idris Muhammad is recorded slightly more upfront than on the other albums which gives this recording some extra pulse and groove.Blue Mitchell on trumpet has that laid back bounce that give his solos that "lift".

1. Ode to Billie Joe
2. The Humpback

Portraits In Blues Volume 6 (Pure Pleasure) (Bend In Cover)
Lonnie Johnson
$27.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Blues guitar simply would not have developed in the manner that it did if not for the prolific brilliance of Lonnie Johnson. He was there to help define the instrument's future within the genre and the genre's future itself at the very beginning, his melodic conception so far advanced from most of his pre-war peers as to inhabit a plane all his own. For more than 40 years, Johnson played blues, jazz, and ballads his way; he was a true blues originator whose influence hung heavy on a host of subsequent blues immortals.
Johnson's influence was massive, touching everyone from Robert Johnson, whose seminal approach bore strong resemblance to that of his older namesake, to Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, who each paid heartfelt tribute with versions of "Tomorrow Night" while at Sun.
Musicians:
- Lonnie Johnson (voc, g)
- Otis Spann (p)
Recording: October 1963 in Copenhagen, Denmark
About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s – or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Snowbound (Pure Pleasure) (Bend In Cover)
Sarah Vaughan
$28.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Wrapped in the soothing strings of arranger Don Costa, Sarah Vaughan recorded an unsurprisingly dreamy ballads collection titled "Snowbound". Despite the peaceful atmosphere and strolling tempo, Vaughan hardly treats the material as a cinch for her voice; all of these 11 songs find her searching for different ways to present timeworn standards. The opening title track is one of the warmest, most romantic songs on the LP, Vaughan plumbing the depths of her alto and nearly perfecting her humming vibrato. She also selects an obscure tune from the Gershwins ("Blah, Blah, Blah", understandably overlooked but fun nevertheless) and, near the end, turns from cozy ballads into a mini-suite of forlorn material: "I Fall in Love Too Easily", "Glad to Be Unhappy", and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most". "Snowbound" is an overlooked gem from Sarah Vaughan's Roulette years.
Musicians:
- Sarah Vaughan (vocal)
- Orchestra
- Don Costa (arranger, conductor)
Recording: July 1962 in New York City
Production: Teddy Reig

If indeed "you blows who you is," as Louis Armstrong once famously said, then Stephen Bruner's bass is a mainline to the soul of a man whose DNA was transcribed from the stars onto staff paper. His Flying Lotus-produced debut, The Golden Age of Apocalypse , offers both stone-cold skill and uncanny astrality, picking up where the pair left off on 2010's Cosmogramma and further distilling the jazz current running through that landmark Lotus release.

The Clash begat Big Audio Dynamite.
Big Audio Dynamite begat Dreadzone and so it began with Greg Dread and Leo Williams (B.A.D.'s rhythm section) along with Tim Bran forming the band in 1992.
They were baptised as 'Dreadzone;' the cultural gatekeepers of the bass line.
Respecting the past and embracing the future these brothers were dealing with the right now, creating the perfect blend somewhere between the technological and the organic.
It's a sound that leaves room for the listener to put themselves in the mix and dance like nobody's watching
The Roberts/Letts & Williams compositions continued the themes and parameters laid down by B.A.D.; a cinematic break beat dub regggae soundtrack that moves the head and the feet.
Basically if you're standing still at the end of this 180 grams double audiophile vinyl, you're dead!

Born out of restlessness and a steady hunt for inspiration, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a career-defining album, filled with the band's signature melding of synthetics and organics, sharp, danceable rhythms, infectious choruses with a considerable dose of aural panache, and candy-colored pop sensibilities. Staying true to what makes Phoenix so special, a sense of whimsical breeziness envelopes these songs in a state of utter pop perfection.
After a triumphant worldwide tour behind It's Never Been Like That, Phoenix, comprised of Thomas Mars (vocals), Laurent 'Branco' Brancowitz (guitars), Christian Mazzalai (guitars) and Deck D'Arcy (keyboards), decided to head out to the Montmartre house of friend, Philip Zdar of Cassius, to record in his studio. From opener and first single Lisztomania, it's clear that Phoenix is light-year's beyond anything they've done before. 1901 leaps out of the speakers with its fizzy power synths, rollicking drums and anthemic chours. Fences is velvet-smooth and soulful, with shimmering keys, chugging acoustic guitars and Thomas' lovelorn croon. Closing track Armistice is coiled and sinister, ending the album with staggered keyboard notes left hanging in the balance.

Man Of The World (On Sale)
Alo
$17.99 $13.49
Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
ALO is not a band that dwells in the past. Their latest adventure, Man of the World finds the CA collective flexing their considerable creative powers to craft their finest album yet. Recorded almost entirely live, the 11-song collection is the sound of four players who have truly found their groove together. This is ALO at their most natural, their most organic and their most pure.
Man of the World was engineered by the bands steady studio partner Dave Simon-Baker and produced by none other than Jack Johnson, a longtime friend and musical collaborator. The singer/songwriter/producer was a natural fit with ALO. It felt like he joined the band for the album, drummer Dave Brogan admits. He was very hands on. If he thought he could add something to a track, he was willing to go for it. And we were more than happy to let him. For the recording, the quartet packed their bags, said goodbye to their friends and families, and headed off to Johnsons home studio on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
As they always have, they shared the songwriting and the vocal duties. Though all four members came to the studio with arrangements and parts of songs fleshed out, everything got scrambled as soon as everyone was together. There was a real workshop vibe, guitarist Lebo affirms. Arrangements were being torn apart and put back together in ways nobody could have imagined. The band had traditionally built their songs up track by track, but they abandoned that approach for a rawer, more organic, one. Songs that sprang out of the bands new recording approach span the sonic spectrum in classic ALO fashion.

Pixies
$24.99 $18.74
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Before the indie rock scene was blown wide open by Nirvana in the early '90s, the Pixies loomed large on college radio. By taking standard pop formats and turning them inside out, the band laid out the new Commandments of alterna-rock for a whole new generation of would-be grunge rockers. In March of 1987, as the Pixies were just beginning to gain a reputation around the Boston area, they recorded their first demo (known by Pixies fans as The Purple Tape). This demo landed the group their first record deal with 4AD, and the 8 songs that appear on their first album Come On Pilgrim were culled from this same demo. However, there were 9 more songs that didn't make the cut, and these are the songs that are found here. It is both musically satisfying and interesting to hear the Pixies at their very beginnings, before they crossed paths with the mighty Steve Albini.

The album title All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu is both a reference to Shakespeares Sonnet 43 and Rufus own concept of Lulu, which he describes as a dark, brooding, dangerous woman that lives within all of us. Lulu is Louise Brooks who starred in the film, Pandoras Box.

I Didn't Know I Was Singing (On Sale)
Sursiks
$18.99 $14.24
Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
The Sursiks, the masters of musical reverse-engineering, have taken 16 phone messages from the answering machines of family members and friends and set them to music, largely unaltered. The messages are not simply slapped on top of pre-existing music for the sake of novelty, but they are the melodic material from which the rest of the music is born. The result is a truly brilliant, hilarious and mind-altering concept album. The musicians include 3 members of legendary American ska band Gangster Fun and the musical style and instrumentation varies throughout, making for an interesting listen.
Track Listing:

 Angola Prisoners' Blues (On Sale)
Robert Pete Williams
$29.99 $22.49
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
In 1959, a young folklorist and musicologist, Harry Oster, traveled to the State Prison in
Angola, Louisiana to collect folksongs. He made a number of field recordings while at the
prison, but his biggest discovery was undoubtedly the Louisiana Blues Hall of Famer, Robert
Pete Williams, a truly gifted musician and blues writer, who was serving a life sentence. Of
the 9 songs on this album, four are by Williams, who sings heart-wrenchingly about prison
life and being down and out. Thanks to Oster, Williams was eventually released from prison,
and was able to have a fairly successful career as a bluesman in the 60s and 70s, appearing
at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival and touring the US and Europe. The other musicians
featured here, fellow inmates Robert Guitar Welch and Matthew Hogman Maxey, are both
extremely gifted musicians, but in the words of Dr. Oster (who would go on to write the
Penguin Guide to American Folklore in 2000), they are primarily the heirs of a clearly
defined and standardized blues tradition, rather than innovators. In any case, this is acoustic
prison blues at its finest, and includes such detailed liner notes as well as an annotated track
listing that it is equal parts musical and historical document.
Track Listing:
1. Levee Camp Blues (Robert Pete Williams)
2. Stagolee (Hogman Maxey)
3. Electric Chair Blues (Guitar Welch)
4. Prisoner's Talking Blues (Robert Pete Williams)
5. Motherless Children Have A Hard Time (Robert Pete Williams)
6. Black Night Fallin' (Hogman Maxey)
7. Some Got Six Months (Robert Pete Williams)
8. I'm Gonna Leave You Mama (Guitar Welch)
9. I'm Lonesome Blues (Robert Pete Williams)

 Diamonds (Picture Disc) (On Sale)
Enforcer
$19.99 $14.99
Picture Disc Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Following the release of their 2008 debut Into the Night, Enforcer added a new bass player in the form of the Rickenbacker-wielding Tobias Lindqvist, with former bassist Joseph Tholl joining shredder Adam Zaars for a dual lead guitar attack. During their relentless worldwide tour schedule of 2008 and 2009, Enforcer managed to finish writing their second full-length album. The band spent the remainder of the year polishing the material before hitting the studio in late December of 2009 to lay down the tracks with renown Swedish producer Rikard Lofgren.
After the release of such a stellar debut album, many fans and critics were left wondering if Enforcer could ever top or even equal their iconic debut album. Proving themselves more than up to the challenge, Enforcer emerged in February of 2010 with their latest masterpiece, aptly entitled Diamonds. A pure old-school heavy metal album of the highest caliber, Diamonds is Enforcer at their best. Recorded, mixed and mastered 100% analog with no triggers, samples or any other phony modern studio techniques to deliver an old-school heavy metal album the way it was intended to sound!

1. Midnight Vice
2. Roll the Dice
3. Katana
4. Running in Menace
5. High Roller
6. Diamonds
7. Live for the Night

Live In Munich 1977 (On Sale)
Rainbow
$34.99 $26.24
Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Import
The concert was recorded in Munich on October 20, 1977, originally filmed to air on the German TV "Rockpalast" show. Repeated airings have led to numerous bootleg video and audio tapes of the show being available through the 80's and 90's. Although some fans believed that this set came from the same tour as the previously released On Stage (which was mostly culled from their 1976 Japanese tour), the performance on this release is actually from their 1977 European tour, a few months prior to the release of "Long Live Rock n' Roll", and thus features a different bass-player and keyboardist.
Track Listing:
1. Kill The King
2. Mistreated
3. Sixteenth Century Greensleeves
4. Catch The Rainbow
5. Long Live Rock 'n' Roll
6. Man On The Silver Mountain
7. Do You Close Your Eyes
