"…As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their hands…Back home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent me…I hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud." – Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008
Hank Mobley was a perfect artist for Blue Note in the 1960s. On this LP, which is a straight reissue of the 1965 session, Mobley is joined by trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins (a typically remarkable Blue Note lineup) for the infectious title cut, three other lesser-known but superior originals, plus Wayne Shorter's "Venus Di Mildew."

One of the best known record dates in the history of modern jazz, the chemistry among Adderley, Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey is amazing. Their reworkings of "Autumn Leaves" and "Love For Sale" are masterpieces. Miles' title tune and Nat Adderley's "One For Daddy-O" are classics.

"...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge. The 45 rpm pressings that I received were all super quiet with every last drop of resolution from the master tapes. I had almost forgotten just how good Paul Chambers and Phil Joe were together as the backbone of these groups. I've always loved this music but I didn't remember it sounding this good! Hank Mobley offers us some brilliant sax bits on one of Kenny Dorham's finest recordings, Whistle Stop and Dexter Gordon's performance blew me away as well. The biggest surprise were the Lee Morgan records. I suggest turning these up loud, since they possess unlimited energy and some hooks that will knock you out. Amazing! Just a small warning: Once you start playing these Blue Note recordings you will be hooked. The good news is that Acoustic Sounds is working on at least 20 more of these jazz gems. So make sure your turntable has a setting for 45 rpm, clean your stylus occassionally, and get ready to be transported to nirvana." - Dan Babineau, Tone Audio, No. 14 2008, www.tonepublications.com
In terms of composition, leadership and playing, this is probably Jackie McLean's greatest album, culled from two different sessions, separated by 20 months. A sextet session with Tina Brooks and Blue Mitchell.

Time is suspended on these haunting, extended tunes by this brilliant guitarist with the aid of an all-star cast. Unique in Green's discography for its relaxed, lengthy performances and almost dream-like lyricism, this Blue Note classic could well be called Ballads for the Ages.

The Three Sounds were part of the trio explosion. Begun in 1956 in Benton Harbor, Michigan as the Four Sounds and consisting of Gene Harris on piano, Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums (the saxophonist was dropped by the time the group moved to Washington, D.C. in 1957), the Sounds eventually migrated to New York City where they were "discovered" by Lou Donaldson. After a single record for Riverside with Nat Adderley, the Three Sounds signed an exclusive contract with Alfred Lion on Blue Note Records. Over the course of five years, the Sounds released nine LPs and appeared on albums by Lou Donaldson and Stanley Turrentine.

Green Street, recorded on April 1, 1961, was Grant Green's second Blue Note album as a leader and remains one of the finest albums of his prolific Blue Note output. Supported by just Ben Tucker's bass and Dave Bailey's drums, the guitarist seems inspired by the absence of any other chordal instrument. His harmonic and interpretive imagination is in high gear on this unique masterpiece in his discography.

This program of sultry, minor key music with a Brazilian tinge seems inspired by Ike Quebec, who was suffering from advanced cancer that would claim his life three months later. But here is big-toned, impassioned tenor is in tact. Quebec's take on the bossa nova craze that explored that year (1962) is more muscular than Stan Getz's and doesn't rely on the familiar Jobim and Gilberto songs of the day. He and Kenny Burrell solo on the sly, subtle rhythms of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo and Garvin Masseaux.

These releases are iconic, not just for the music inside, but also for the stunning, legendary album covers, which are works of art in themselves.
Just thirty-one at the time of this 1964 classic, Wayne Shorter had just recorded Night Dreamer and Ju-Ju for Blue Note within the past year and was at one of his major peaks of creativity. The music on Speak No Evil, which includes such future Shorter standards as "Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum" and "Infant Eyes," is often beyond description for it combines the best elements of hard bop, post bop, free jazz and modal music plus Shorter's own individual approach. Not only does Shorter sound inspired by his own challenging pieces but so does Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock. This is not standard bebop or a predictable type of soul jazz but is actually a brand new style of music that has yet to be fully exploited. Over 40 years later, Speak No Evil still sounds fresh, new and futuristic, standing as one of the most important recordings of the mid-1960s. CD versions includes an alternative take bonus track of "Dance Cadaverous."

and "Midnight Blue" among others. Burrell is quoted as saying to Alfred Lion "I have always had a Love for the blues. In my earliest days in Detroit, I worked with groups

On the Spur of the Moment (MONO)
Horace Parlan

200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed

Classic reissued this title a few years ago in stereo from the original two track master tapes cut on our all tube cutting system by Bernie "Be-Bop" Grundman and pressed on a conventional 180g profile. Now we've gone back and cut it in Mono on our all tube MONO cutting system. Why? Because many argue persuasively that Van Gelder really recorded to two channels not for the stereo effect but for more control in the final MONO mix of the two channels. This recording features Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Stanley
Turrentine (brother) on tenor Sax, Horace on piano, George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums. Tunes include the title track, and "Shoo Chee", "And that I am so in Love", "Al's Tune", "Ray C." (for Mr. Charles) and "Pyramid". Cut in Mono cut from the same two track master tape with the channels folded 50/50 as per Rudy's original notes to do so on the tape box.
Also available in stereo from the same tapes. Both Pressed on Classic's uniquely better sounding 200g Super Vinyl Profile.

Ironically, this album entitled: "Introducing Johnny Griffin"
does not have tenor saxophonist Johnny, as a leader , but it
gained Griffin a great deal of attention. Soon billed as "the
world's fastest saxophonist," Griffin was also a superior ballad
interpreter with a fairly distinctive tone of his own. With strong
support given by pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Curly Russell, and
drummer Max Roach, Griffin romps through: Mil Dew (Griffin)
Chicago Calling (Griffin), These Foolish Things, The Boy Next Door,
Nice and Easy, It's Alright With Me and Lover Man. Recorded April
17, 1956 by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder directly to 1/4" Mono
analog tape which was used at Bernie Grundman Mastering on Classic's

 Dial S for Sonny
Sonny Clark
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
|
Dial "S" for Sonny, Sonny Clark first session for Blue Note Records and his first session as a leader, is a terrific set of laidback bop, highlighted by Sonny Clark liquid, swinging solos. Sonny Clark leads a first-rate group -- Art Farmer (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Wilbur Ware (bass), Louis Hayes (drums) -- through four originals and two standards, balancing the selections between swinging bop and reflective ballads. There are traces of Bud Powell in Sonny Clark style, but he's beginning to come into his own, developing a style that's alternately edgy and charmingly relaxed. Hank Mobley, Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller have their moments, but Sonny Clark steals the show in this set of fine, straight-ahead bop.

$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed

Jutta Hipp, a talented German pianist, came to the United States in the
mid-'50s and quickly gained some attention. Hipp's boppish music on the set
is very enjoyable and swinging. Oddly enough, soon after this now impossible
LP to find, she left the jazz world. Teamed up with great tenor Zoot Sims
(who dominates the music), somewhat hesitant trumpeter Jerry Lloyd (who
briefly came out of retirement), bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and drummer Ed
Thigpen, Hipp sounds excellent on a couple of basic originals and such
standards as "Violets for Your Furs," "Almost Like Being in Love," and J.J.
Johnson's "Wee Dot." This rare set is well worth picking up by
straight-ahead jazz collectors. The Classic reissue was cut from the

 Lee Morgan Sextet (MONO)
Lee Morgan
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed

Continuing where his debut left off, Morgan’s second LP in 1956 as a leader for Blue Note, finds the teen prodigy (still only 18) slowly emerging out from the long shadow of his idol and mentor Clifford Brown and feeling his own way among giants. You can hear his confidence growing in his solos, energized and fed by the company he has been keeping rather than any intimidation or hesitation at all. Excellent ensemble work must be credited to Benny Golson, who arranged four of the six numbers on the date. Led by a three-horn assault of Morgan’s trumpet, BN regular Hank Mobley on tenor and the fairly obscure altoist Kenny Rodgers, they cruise through a variety of tempos and moods, the highlights being their memorable takes on “Whisper Not” and “Where Am I”? As expected, Horace Silver’s piano, Paul Chambers’ bass and the drumming of Charlie Persip ! is both impeccable and tasteful throughout. Other selections include “Latin Hangover”, “His Sister”, “D’s Funk” and “Slightly Hep” Extremely hep is more like it. Mastered and cut by Bernie Grundman on Classic's "ALL TUBE PURE MONO" cutting system (not like others who
use a stereo cutting head which imparts "crosstalk" onto the groove cut) and pressed onto 200 gram QUIEX Super Vinyl Profile for maximum fidelity. Jackets are authentic "tip-on" and laminated (front only) as were the originals - and the labels have the desirable "deep groove". The Cooker (MONO)
Lee Morgan
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
This September 1957 session, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack, finds the still young Morgan (age 19) in the company of an interesting mix of players and not your Blue Note supporting regulars. Yes, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones are present on bass and drums respectively but asking Pepper Adams in on baritone sax and the inclusion of pianist Bobby Timmons, both usually associated with rival Riverside (but no strangers to Van Gelder), give these particular sides a nice edge.
Morgan’s interplay with Adams’ throatier horn gives a new perspective to his patented rapid-fire lines. Having assumed his place in the majors from his childhood idol, the late Clifford Brown (d. 1956), Morgan was on the assent in ’57 with what was to be a series of recordings for Blue Note that would help establish him in his short lifetime (33 years) as one of the greatest bop trumpeters.
The Cooker contains two Morgan originals “Heavy Dipper” and “New-Ma”, with standards “Just One Of Those Things”, “A Night In Tunisia” and “Lover Man” completing the album. Mastered and cut by Bernie Grundman on Classic's "ALL TUBE PURE MONO" cutting system (not like others who use a stereo cutting head which imparts "crosstalk" onto the groove cut) and pressed onto 200 gram QUIEX Super Vinyl Profile for maximum fidelity. Hank Mobley
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl MONO LP - Sealed
|
This stunning mono set was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and originally
released on Blue Note Records in June of 1957. The original Jazz
Messengers, who Mobley had help found, had just disbanded and the heavyweight
tenor-man was splitting time between Horace Silver's new group and as an
exclusive Blue Note recording artist. Calling on some of the cream of NYC's
finest, Mobley opted for a sextet setting and the results became a classic.
Including another sax player in Curtis Porter on alto and second tenor
was a unique thought and added to the front-line punch of Bill Hardman's trumpet.
The rhythm of Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers at the bass and Art Taylor behind
the drums is an all-star adhesive holding the group tightly together. Mobley's "dry
and intimate" tone shines through in a subtle approach to the harmonies and cadence
set in each selection. Mastered from the original first-generation monaural master
tapes and cut with Classic Record's custom-built mono cutting head. Included are
Falling In Love With Love, Mighty Moe and Joe, Bags' Groove, Double Exposure and News.

 Candy (200 Gram)
Lee Morgan
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl MONO LP - Sealed
|
This classic Blue Note session finds trumpeter Morgan not having to battle
other horns, just front-and-center with an all-star trio behind him. It was
his only quartet recording as a leader, for Blue Note. The exquisite Sonny
Clark on piano, Doug Watkins' solid bass and the ever-tasteful Art Taylor
behind the drums complete these sessions recorded in Hackensack by RVG in
Nov. '57 and Feb. '58. Loaded with standards, it's a hard-bop masterpiece
that both swings and shows the ballad side of one of the defining young
trumpeters from the late 50s - early 60s. Not discounting the contributions
from the rhythm section, the high-caliber interplay between just trumpet
and
piano is a rare treat and a marvel to behold. Selections include Since I

 Volume 1 Comparison Package
Miles Davis
$54.99
Vinyl LP 10" 33 RPM Disc + 45 RPM 12" 200G Disc - Sealed
|
This is Miles Davis' first Blue Note recording released in 1952 as a 10" LP with the title apparently borrowed from a 1950 movie of the same name starring Kirk Douglas. The line up on the six song LP features Jay Jay Johnson, Jackie McLean, Gil Coggins, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clark backing up the Young Man with a Horn. This record swings and the playing is obviously from a more romantic Miles trying to find his way. The authentic "deep groove" non-groove guard pressing in an authentic tip on jacket will fool even the best collectors. Cut on the newly restored Classic Mono Cutting System at Bernie Grundman mastering by Mr Be Bop himself! Even if you don't own a record player you have to have this record if you want to be cool.
Includes Mono 10" Disc 33.3rpms and 45rpms 12" QUIEX SV-P 200g double sided disc.

Sonny Clark
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
A Blue Note catalog mainstay from it's debut in 1958,
this was another early 12" originally released as "mono only."
Now, transferred from the first-generation mono masters,
the quintet sound is wide-open and spacious. The phrase "all star"
does not begin to describe this recording collective. Complimenting Clark's
piano are Art Farmer on trumpet. Jackie McLean handling alto,
and a rhythm section consisting of Paul Chambers on bass and Phily Joe Jones
behind the drums.
