Out To Lunch is one of Eric Dolphy's lasting classics and most forward looking statements featuring Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Tony Williams. Although Dolphy's reed playing is as amazing as you'd expect, the real surprise here is Hutcherson, whose vibes ring out with a cold harsh tone that provides the perfect edge to the set. Despite a large number of later recordings, he almost never hit this level again and it's his playing that gives the set such a unique sound. Includes the tracks; "Straight Up & Down," "Gazzelloni," "Hat And Beard," "Out To Lunch" and "Something Sweet, Something Tender." Out To Lunch is an innovative document by one of the most emotional, resourceful reedmen in jazz history.

"…As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their hands…Back home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent me…I hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud." – Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008
Since his days with the Bud Powell Trio, drummer Art Taylor was an invaluable member of the Blue Note recording family. A.T.'s Delight is the only album made under his own name for the label and it is a remarkable one. Choosing great compositions by Coltrane, Monk, Denzil Best and Kenny Dorham, Taylor assembled a great quintet fronted by Dave Burns and Stanley Turrentine, often adding Patato's congas to the proceedings. The unique and varied arrangements and great playing pay tribute to the drummer's exceptional song selection.

No music label represented the classic era better than Blue Note Records and now they're proudly unveiling the first group in their series of Vinyl + Bonus CD reissues of the cream of the crop classics from the Blue Note Vaults! Each LP is mastered from the original analog tapes by Ron McMaster. Each state-of-the-art CD is mastered in 24-bit by Rudy Van Gelder, the original recording engineer of these historic sessions. These releases are iconic, not just for the music inside, but also for the stunning, legendary album covers, which are works of art in themselves.
Arguably one of the most influential titles from Coltrane and one of the greatest Blue Note releases ever. In 1957, right at the very start of his Prestige recording period, Trane did this one-off set in New Jersey with Rudy Van Gelder and the results have gone down in history. CD version includes two alternative take bonus tracks not found on the original LP.

Here To Stay Freddie Hubbard $49.99
180 Gram Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
One of the acknowledged giants of jazz trumpet, Freddie Hubbard recorded many albums for Blue Note in the 1960s. Due to the incredible quantity and quality of Blue Note recording sessions in the ‘50s and ‘60s, several of Hubbard’s’ most stirring albums went unissued at the time. There were times when the reason for Alfred Lion’s decision to hold back a session were quite clear. But there were many others, such as this gem, where one can only gather that the Blue Note office, in the early 60’s was simply too busy and chaotic to keep track of every session. Here to Stay, a true rare find, was first released as part of a two-LP set in 1979 after languishing in the vaults for over 15 years. It features a Hubbard in his early twenties, and most definitely in his prime. Freddie was a member of Art Blakely’s Jazz Messengers at this time. In fact, the lineup of musicians is comprised of the Jazz Messengers of the day (with Wayne Shorter on tenor, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman) with drummer Philly Joe Jones filling in for Blakey. The music is fiery, brilliant and full of excitement, including a particularly memorable version of “Body and Soul”. Here to Stay is a hard bop rarity (now heard in stunning fidelity) from some of the top young lions of the 1960s. It is, quite simply, one of the most inspired albums of Hubbard’s career.

Over his twenty-five year tenure on Blue Note, pianist Silver employed some great horn men to record with but arguably none blended better with his arranging than the group he assembled for this May 1957 session. Hank Mobley’s tenor and Art Farmer’s trumpet become the right and left hands to Silver’s body of work and set a standard for small-ensemble writing and playing. No slouches themselves, Teddy Kotick’s bass and Louis Hayes’ drum work help produce a stellar collection including a version of “Home Cookin” that became a jazz classic. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible.

Recorded in 1962 by Rudy Van Gelder at the Englewood Cliffs studio,
Rouse and Co. departed from the normal hard-bop that as Monk’s main tenorman he had earned his New York rep with and took the recent bossa nova / calypso craze, started by Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd and even Sonny Rollins to another place. With great grooves from the rhythm section, including augmentation with conga and chekere, the result is a great collection, rooted in various Afro-Caribbean styles and not American jazzmen trying to sound Brazilian. Among others, guitarist Kenny Burrell’s and especially drummer Willie Bobo’s playing makes this not just another bossa nova fad date. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible.

Outside of Paul Chambers, who was employed as Miles Davis’s bassist at this time, all of the other players on these April 1957 RVG Hackensack dates were leaders of their own renowned groups; a reflection of the respect they all shared for the date leader, Sonny Rollins. Besides Chambers, with J.J. Johnson on trombone, Art Blakey behind the drums and alternating pianists Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver, who both play on the now-famous version of “Misterioso”, the words All-Star seem almost demeaning to this conclave. The resulting recordings burst forth with confidence and enthusiasm, capturing a fire and passion usually found only with uninhibited live dates and not the constraints of a recording studio. Exceptional versions of “Poor Butterfly” and “You Stepped Out Of a Dream” elevate this record to monumental status. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. The Magnificent (MONO) Thad Jones $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
Two separate sessions, from July 1956 and February 1957 make up this 12” release, recorded by RVG at his Hackensack studio. Trumpeter Jones decided to utilize two distinct groups of supporting players and the results are interesting contrasts in structure. Rounding out the quartet date with just a rhythm section of Barry Harris’s piano, Percy Heath on bass and drummer Max Roach, Thad’s trumpet is the main focal point. On the quintet date, Jones adds Benny Powell’s trombone and Gigi Gryce on alto sax for the front line, with Tommy Flanagan at the piano, George Duvivier on bass and his brother Elvin banging the skins. Sharp, tight playing from both groups, especially on “I’ve Got A Crush On You” and “I’ll Wind” highlight this collection. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible

This is one of those Blue Note Records as that Larry Cohn would say,
should have come out in 1960 when it was recorded but not released which
was common for Blue Note. Tina on tenor sax is accompanied by Jackie
McLean on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano,
Paul Chambers on bass,
and Art Taylor on drums doing tunes like "Back to the Tracks",
"Street Singer" and "The Blues and I" all penned by Brooks as well as
other tunes. The first
issue of this recording was in Japan and it has only subsequently
been issued in the US in stereo and as such this constitutes the
first MONO LP issue
as it would have been if it had been put out in 1960. This first US
Blue Note Mono issue on LP has been faithfully
reproduced and transferred from the original full track Mono master
tapes on Classic's ALL TUBE, MONO cutting system - no Mono cut
on a stereo lathe here. Another in the Classic Blue Note Signature
Mono LP reissue series pressed with the authentic "deep groove" on
Classic's proprietary 200g Super Vinyl Profile.
1. Back to the Tracks
2. Street Singer
3. The Blues and I
4. For Heavens Sake
5. The Ruby and the Pearl
Why do this title in STEREO when the MONO is generally the way the Classic Blue Note Signature Series titles are released and given that we've made such
a big deal about how Van Gelder intended his recordings to be listened to in Mono? The answer is simply that the 2 - track tape sounds great and like
"Somethin' Else" and "Blue Train" deserves its own treatment in addition to the mono release. The transfer by Bernie Grundman was done on Classic's "All Tube"
Stereo cutting system from the original 2 - track master tape (the same tape used for the MONO release). Midnight Blue
is one of those records that you just put on, sit back and relax. Burrell and a great band including Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, Bill English on drums, Ray Barretto on conga
and Major Holley Jr. on bass lay down tunes including "Mule", "Soul Lament", "Wavy Gravy", "Gee Baby Ain't I good for You"
and "Midnight Blue" among others. Burrell is quoted as saying to Alfred Lion "I have always had a Love for the blues. In my earliest days in Detroit, I worked with groups
that concentrated a great deal on the blues. And I wanted to get a group together for this session that can feel the blues the way I do." Pressed on Classic's own Quiex Super Vinyl Profile,
this release, as part of the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Series is a must have. Also available in MONO cut from the same 2 - channel master tapes - summed into MONO per Rudy's instructions!

Wynton Kelly, and Paul Chambers sit in on "Roll Call", "My Groove Your Move", "Take Your Pick", "A Baptist Beat", "The More I see You", and
"The Breakdown". This Van Gelder recording was transferred from the original two track master tape (same as for the mono) with cutting as usual done by
Bernie "Be Bop" Grundman using Classic's "all tube" stereo cutting system and pressed on Quiex 200g Super Vinyl Profile.

This is a particularly strong set from trumpeter Kenny Dorham, for it has
the debut versions of "Lotus Flower," "Minor Holiday," and "La Villa," three
of his most rewarding compositions. The first half of the set is Afro-Cuban
in nature due to the inclusion of Carlos "Potato" Valdes' conga; also on the
album are trombonist J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley on tenor, baritonist Cecil
Payne, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Art
Blakey. Dorham has an all-star group of young hard boppers eager to play
his challenging and memorable originals.

Phil Talks with Quill Phil Woods $32.99

Another '59 release, this is one of three official duet dates released on LP by these two. As usual, sparks fly between the dueling alto saxes when the "heir apparent" Woods is joined by the seemingly unknown and definitely under-recorded Quill. Arrangements pay homage to the masters with material from Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie, none of which is foreign territory for any of the players. Another great Epic "Stereo-Rama" recording from producer Mike Berniker.

"I have my two new Blue Note LPs here and as I sit writing this I am listening to the Dexter Gordon, WOW!…sitting here listening to this wonderful music, just clean, no background noise, a black background, like the studio that they recorded this in, it is wonderful. The instruments coming out of the sound stage positioned as they were recorded, this is a real treat." – Miller Steel, Acoustic Sounds customer
"...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge. The 45 rpm pressings that I received were all super quiet with every last drop of resolution from the master tapes. I had almost forgotten just how good Paul Chambers and Phil Joe were together as the backbone of these groups. I've always loved this music but I didn't remember it sounding this good! Hank Mobley offers us some brilliant sax bits on one of Kenny Dorham's finest recordings, Whistle Stop and Dexter Gordon's performance blew me away as well. The biggest surprise were the Lee Morgan records. I suggest turning these up loud, since they possess unlimited energy and some hooks that will knock you out. Amazing! Just a small warning: Once you start playing these Blue Note recordings you will be hooked. The good news is that Acoustic Sounds is working on at least 20 more of these jazz gems. So make sure your turntable has a setting for 45 rpm, clean your stylus occassionally, and get ready to be transported to nirvana." - Dan Babineau, Tone Audio, No. 14 2008, www.tonepublications.com
"I have just listened, in succession, to my mono and early stereo versions of each LP. I have purchased other similar reissues over the years, but find the engineering and pressing of this 45rpm/180 series to be superior to all to others. This is particularly since I find many new releases to be of inferior quality or handling during manufacture, despite being re-engineered and of heavier vinyl." – Barry Paulson, Acoustic Sounds customer
Dexter Gordon connects immediately with the sublime rhythm section of Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on this, his second Blue Note album. The material ranges from Drew originals to pieces from Gordon's score for the Los Angeles production of "The Connection" to stunning performances of the standards "The End Of A Love Affair" and "Smile."

"How do these new deluxe re-issues stack up to the alternatives? Not surprisingly, the big difference comes from the 45-RPM cutting. The faster cutting speed creates greater dynamic range and the sense of more air around the instruments, which stand out in better relief and give that you-are-there feel. The tradeoff requires you to flip the record twice as often, a small price to pay for this level of enhanced realism. These new issues maintain that timbral accuracy and at the same time bring out the piano sound like never before, for the first time Blue Note re-issues sound right." Dennis D. Davis, Hi-Fi+, Issue 57

This album is unique within Lee Morgan's vast and rich Blue Note discography. With then current employer Art Blakey, band mate Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, the trumpeter abandons time constraints and stretches out on four, soulful, hard-bop compositions (the first and the last are by Cal Massey). These hard bop masters are constantly inspired by Blakey's explosive grooves.

Rightfully considered one of Kenny Dorham's best, this album features great originals and great trumpet playing. The superb cast consists of Hank Mobley, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The title tune and "Philly Twist" are often heard, but the entire album represents a great composing achievement for KD.

A dedicated disciple of Charlie Parker, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson focused his energies on the bluesier aspects of his hero's playing and rendered it with a sweeter edge that fashioned him a viable career for decades. His work for Blue Note showed his impressive mastery of the bop style.

Two weeks after Ike Quebec recorded his comeback album Heavy Soul for Blue Note, he was back at the Van Gelder Studio with the same band (Freddie Roach, Milt Hinton and Al Harewood), making a second album. The confidence paid off because It Might As Well Be Spring is every bit the classic the first album proved to be. Quebec's big-toned, vulnerable tenor playing is a thing to behold, as his heart-stopping version of the title tune, "Lover Man" and "Willow Weep For Me" attest. "Easy – Don't Hurt" is one of his blues masterpieces.

Tokyo Blues, a quintessential mid-'60s Blue Note session, is Horace Silver's tribute to the Japanese people who have long supported his funky, Latin-flavored modern jazz. American jazz has always been wildly popular in Japan, and this album is Silver's homage to the many fans that he has encountered on various triumphant tours of the island nation. While Silver's trademark funky Latin/swing is at the forefront, the inspiration of eastern delights is clearly evident in all aspects of this grooving date.

John Patton, Grant Green and Ben Dixon were introduced to Blue Note by Lou Donaldson and quickly became the quintessential rhythm section for Blue Note's funkier session. They came together for this, John Patton's first album, with two of the label's tenor saxophonists Fred Jackson and Harold Vick. The double tenors and organ trio make an unbeatable combination for some soulful, swinging music. The title tune and "The Silver Meter" were radio hits that remain among the most popular of Patton's recorded performances.

Lou Donaldson's undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, marks the point where the altoist began to decisively modify his heavy Charlie Parker influence and add a smoky, bluesy flavor of his own. The material is still firmly in the bebop style, and the mellower moments aren't as sleepy as some of Donaldson's subsequent work, so the album sounds vital and distinctive even as it slows down and loosens things up. What elevates Blues Walk to classic status is its inviting warmth. Donaldson's sweetly singing horn is melodic throughout the six selections, making even his most advanced ideas sound utterly good-natured and accessible. The easy-swinging title cut is arguably Donaldson's signature tune even above his late-'60s soul-jazz hits, and his other two originals, "Play Ray" and "Callin' All Cats," are in largely the same vein.

Dexter Gordon considered this his finest album, and few would disagree. With the perfect rhythm section of Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins, this tenor giant reinvents standards like "Three O'clock In The Morning," "Second Balcony Jump" and "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" and introduces his most famous composition, "Cheese Cake."

J.J. Johnson shared the front line with his tenor master for an exceptional session that features a unique reworking of "Poor Butterfly" and a great original "Why Don't I." Horace Silver is the pianist, but Thelonious Monk replaces him on "Reflections" and both pianists alternate throughout a stunning version of "Misterioso."
