By the end of the Fifties Muddy Waters had become famous enough to release a record with his own name on the cover. But that it was to be a 'Best of' album was certainly a surprise because the ink had hardly dried on his recording contract with Chess. It was as though the producers had known that with such titles as 'Hoochie Coochie (Man)', 'Honey Bee' and 'I Want You To Love Me Muddy' had come up with blues music which would provide him and numerous cover bands with material for years to come. In those days Waters’ blues did not bow to any particular fashion of the times. Dry and raw, he tells his tales to the crystal-clear, metallic sound of the electric guitar. A rhythm group builds the foundation, the melodic counterpart to the vocals is provided by the harp with cuttingly sharp intrusions or whimpering background. Nothing more is needed to experience a truly original blues feeling and one can be both sad and happy that such authentic blues music is available only on record. That’s how it was in the Seventies, when Chess released a remake of this record. Now here is the 'original'!

I Know You Hubert Sumlin $24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
If you are a blues fan, you know Howlin' Wolf. And if you know Wolf, you already know Hubert Sumlin. Over a span of almost 25 years together, Hubert and Wolf recorded a slew of acknowledged blues classics (in addition to knocking each other's teach out!) That's Hubert's hair-raising guitar behind the original versions of Spoonful, Back Door Man, and Killing Floor. Along the way, Hubert became an acknowledged guitar hero too, among others, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, who proclaimed Hubert's style as "just the weirdest."
Yet as influential as he has been, Hubert Sumlin has recorded relative few solo albums. And when he has, he has often been obscured by a mountain of production. On I Know You, surrounded by old friends such a fellow Wolf bandmate Sam Lay on drums and the great Carey Bell on harmonica, Hubert felt free to create in an intimate setting that captured the spirit of the great Chess recordings from the '50's. APO is proud to present Hubert Sumlin's I Know You. It's 100 percent pure unadultered wild and wooly Hubert!

The Lost Tapes Muddy Waters $20.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
In concert in the late '60s and early '70s, Muddy Waters was still tearing it up in his grand old style, as is evident on this previously unreleased concert recording from 1971. Muddy had not yet begun to bring the younger generation into his band, so bona fide Chicago blues vets like pianist Pinetop Perkins and drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith are on hand to provide that classic '50s Chess sound on a program of gems from Muddy's glory days. The urgency and fire of his earlier recordings is replaced here by a more seasoned, understated approach but instead of detracting from the performances, it adds a deeper level of ominous insinuation to Muddy's sultry tales of lust.

During his seventeen year career, Tommy Castro has established himself as one of the most popular artists on the blues scene. For his latest release Painkiller, Castro teamed up with producer John Porter, renowned for his work with a who’s who list of artists such as Los Lonely Boys, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Santana, B.B. King, Elvis Costello and Buddy Guy. Said Castro, "When I started looking for a producer, I realized that John had produced some of my favorite records of the last ten years. After working with him in the studio, I understand now why that is. With John, everything just seems to be right, all the parts work and flow together."
Everything indeed just seems right on Painkiller. With the Tommy Castro Band; rhythm mainstay Randy McDonald on bass, saxophonist extraordinaire Keith Crossan and drummer Chris Sandoval anchoring the sessions, Porter has fashioned a most tasteful album from the many talented parts of Castro’s patented rock ‘n’ soul music. Special guests Coco Montoya, Angela Strehli, David Maxwell and Teresa James join in the fun.
Painkiller was voted 2007's Album of the Year by the readers of BluesWax. This release is part of the Blind Pig Records Vinyl Masters Series, a new line of remastered, high-quality, 180 gram virgin vinyl LPs!

Blue Bird Jimmy Rogers $24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Analogue Productions is proud to present the definitive album by Jimmy Rogers, one of the three founders of Muddy Water's first and greatest band, and a Chicago blues giant in his own right.
Jimmy, whose evocative and earthy guitar sound embodies Chicago Blues, is recognized as a writer of Chicago blues songs second only to Willie Dixon and is regarded as one of the greatest Chicago blues singers by fans and musical legends alike, including Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, who credits Jimmy as being one of his three greatest musical influences along with Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry.
As the musical genre Jimmy pioneered is gaining mass popularity in the nineties, Jimmy's classic guitar work has been heard by millions in television commercials featuring songs such as Rock Me by Muddy Waters and I Ain't Superstitious by Howlin' Wolf.
Jimmy is joined on this album by an all-star group comprised of the legendary pianist Johnnie Johnson, who was the backbone of all Chuck Berry's greatest hits, harmonica virtuoso Carey Bell, bassist Dave Myers, drummer Ted Harvey and lead guitarist Jimmy D. Lane. This recording won a W.C. Handy Award for the Best Traditional Blues Album in 1995.

Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall was the first blues album to truly cross over and influence a whole generation and continues to spread its influence today. Everyone from Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds and countless others, were influenced by Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall. This album includes all of his greatest hits. Jimmy not only had hits on the R&B charts but also crossed over 11 times on Billboard’s Hot 100, unheard of for a blues musician. This is not a live recording. Rather, Jimmy Reed recorded in Carnegie Hall the same set list he had performed there just a night or two previously.
Mastered at AcousTech by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman.
"Analogue Productions' cleanly pressed 45rpm version of Reed's most famous release is not the first audiophile edition. Mobile Fidelity released a fine-sounding gold disc in the '90s, and Audio Fidelity recently transferred it onto SACD. But there's magic lurking within these grooves that digital has never fully reproduced; the album has never sounded better. Reed's lazy rhythmic sway, loose-limbed strumming, and unmannered singing fill the soundstage...Guitar timbres teem with purity, and there's ample separation between Reed's elementary harmonica solos and Earl Phillips' rocking-chair percussion. While the album has never been a dynamic standout, it's hard to imagine a future incarnation getting more from the music." - Bob Gendron, The Absolute Sound, April/May 2005

Mahalia Jackson's deep soulfulness, the passion of her Christian conviction and a belief in the power of her music led her to breakthrough in the U.S. where she appeared at Carnegie Hall and took her to Europe where she performed at the Vatican. It did not, however, though many had wished it so, lead her to jazz, blues and rock ’n’ roll. The public’s wide acceptance of her music proved her right in pursuing her own spiritual path first and foremost, although some critical listeners claimed to have spotted commercial undertones in her inimitable, highly expressive singing.
This live recording from the Newport Festival from 1958 cannot be accused of having been made for commercial reasons because it by no means reflects the common cliches of gospel singing. There is no rhythm group, no chorus and no clapping of hands so no sound is left unheard here. Mahalia’s soft, raucous voice retains its volume and warmth in moments of drama as well as in whispered passages. In this performance she is accompanied only by a piano or occasionally a Hammond organ with a cloud of chords. This is a pure, authentic musical experience that is free of style and trends, making it all the more meaningful and rare all these years later. Hear it in all its sonic glory here on this 180g Import LP!

These astounding recordings started R.L. Burnside's storied career. The intensity of these songs fortells well the power of his great records that followed. R.L. Burnside's way of doing things or Burnside Style, as the man himself has written on the hood of his old van, has often been mistaken as indifference. Rather, he regards the music-making machine with polite amusement. The songs on First Recordings capture Burnside at his home in 1968, when he was farming for a living, and only playing for family and friends.

Keb' Mo's self-titled debut is an edgy, ambitious collection of gritty country blues. The contemporary blues-based artist pursues new ground here, trying to incorporate some of the sensibilities of the slacker revolution without losing touch of the tradition that makes the blues the breathing, vital art form it is. His gutsy guitar playing and impassioned vocals, as well as his surprisingly accomplished songwriting, make Keb' Mo' a debut to remember.

Back To The Country Johnny Shines & Snooky Pryor $20.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
In the early 1950's, Snooky Pryor and Johnny Shines recorded sides for the J.O.B. label that helped lay the groundwork for Chicago's electrified, small band blues. Reunited four decades later in the Texas hill country, they took the opposite approach with a set of acoustic, country blues that returned them to their roots in the Mississippi delta. Robert Johnson, the proud, tormented genius of Delta blues, is the spirit hovering over Back To The Country. In the forty years since Snooky and Johnny first recorded together, blues has undergone unlikely transformations, growing first into popular music, then disappearing almost entirely, before being revived several times. Back To The Country remains as close as you're likely to get to the source, the Delta. Released by Blind Pig in 1991, the recording went on to win the Living Blues "Country Blues Record Of the Year" award among many other accolades. Now availabe here on 180g Vinyl.

Skin Deep Buddy Guy $19.99
Vinyl LP Reissue - Sealed
Buddy Guy's new album, Skin Deep is his 10th Silvertone/Zomba studio release and it features all original material as well as collaborations with fellow guitar luminaries Eric Clapton, Robert Randolph, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.
Elaborating on his inspiration for the album title and song Skin Deep, Guy touches upon a powerful series of personal memories and observations on the ways in which we’re all the same underneath it all. “I used to play with this boy, ride horses, down close to where I was born,” he says. “Then when we were 13, his parents made us stop. They used to say you had black blood or white blood, but we’d get a flashlight and hold it up to our skin and we’d just see red blood. That’s what I mean by 'Skin Deep.'
In a career spanning more than 45 years, Buddy Guy continues to add to his ever-growing legacy. At the age of 72, he graced the cover of Rolling Stone, as part of the magazine’s recent '100 Greatest Guitar Songs' issue (his cataclysmic 1961 recording of “Stone Crazy” made the list) and he also turned in a show-stopping performance in Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert film, Shine A Light. Guy has won five Grammy Awards, 23 W.C. Handy 'wards (the most any one blues artist has received), a Congressional Medal of Arts and Billboard Magazine's prestigious The Century Award for 'distinguished artistic achievement.” In 2005 Buddy Guy was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by friends Eric Clapton and B.B. King.

Porgy & Bess (200 Gram) Ray Charles $49.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Temporarily out of stock
This is the famous version of Porgy and Bess that was supposed to have Gladys Knight singing the part of Bess. When Ray Charles offered the part to Gladys, having just come of the hit "Midnight train to Georgia", her manager at the time, would only allow her to participate if she owned the masters. According to Ray, he said, "well now you know that just won't be possible" to which her manager responded that she wouldn't be available. Ray told me that his mother taught him the meaning of "NO" and hence he asked Cleo Laine, who did a beautiful job of singing the part. Ray was also in top form as this 2 LP edition mastered from the original analog masters shows very clearly. Now available on 200g Quiex Super Vinyl Profile for the first time. A must have!

Life Is Splendid
For Alison Krauss, musical collaboration has been a way of life. Her latest musical collaboration, Raising Sand, is an astonishing album recorded in tandem with rock vocalist and songwriter Robert Plant. Raising Sand is their first recorded endeavor, and will prove revelatory to fans and the media on two counts: first that it happened at all, and, more importantly, that it is as successful and illuminating as it is.
From its embryonic, conceptual stages – well before any music materialized – the mere idea of Raising Sand held infinite fascination for both its creators and those around them. As word spread of an impending musical collaboration between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, imaginations ran wild. Two artists, each at the pinnacle of their respective pantheons, Robert and Alison have seemingly little in common. But just below the surface, an elemental understanding flowed between them, waiting to be tapped...
Under the careful sonic stewardship of producer T Bone Burnett, Raising Sand is pitched three steps beyond some cosmic collision of early urban blues, spacious West Texas country, and the unrealized potential of the folk-rock revolution. Shockingly evocative, it is an album that uncovers popular music’s elemental roots while sounding effortlessly, breathtakingly modern. Despite hailing from distinctly different backgrounds, Plant and Krauss share a maverick spirit and willingness to extend the boundaries of their respective genres. Raising Sand finds Plant and Krauss functioning as sympathetic equals: creating a powerful new sound from both their common musical ground and their unrivaled sense of empathy

Until now, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney of the Black Keys took an extreme do-it-yourself approach to record making, hunkering down in a basement studio or setting up equipment in one of the abandoned factories of their native Akron, Ohio. Their modus operandi was more seance than session. With a minimal set of tools, they conjured up a big, swaggering blues-rock sound, seemingly drawn from some distant time and place yet too weirdly original to ever be called retro. As Rolling Stone put it in a review of their 2006 Nonesuch debut, Magic Potion, "Pure blues rock of this caliber is really timeless."
For this album, however, the Black Keys decided not to go it alone: Attack and Release is the result of one of the most audacious and eagerly awaited collaborations in alternative rock history. As producer, Auerbach and Carney chose Danger Mouse, the mega-eclectic sonic mastermind behind the Grammy Award-winning Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere and its multi-format hit, "Crazy", as well as the music-industry provocateur who created the mother of all mash-ups, The Grey Album. The Black Keys also deigned to work at an established studio, albeit one within driving distance of Akron. Suma Recording, a legendary spot in northeast Ohio renowned for its supply of great vintage gear, provided just the right ambience for the guys. As Carney put it, with genuine affection, Suma "smells like a moldy cabin and looks like a haunted house."
On Attack and Release, Danger Mouse is more creative co-conspirator than traditional figure behind the boards. He doesn't radically alter the duo's sound so much as coax out more of its inherent soulfulness, groove and bittersweet emotion. Two versions of "Remember When" illustrate how the duo can swing easily from smoldering ballad to thrashing rocker. "I'm more pleased with the sound of this record than any one we've ever made," says Carney, and Auerbach concurs: "We never let it all go like we did for this one, anything was game. It was just fun to make, and that's why I think it's so successful." The band adds more instrumentation to their mix, including piano, organ and moog synthesizer. Danger Mouse fashions subtle special effects, like the ghostly background choir that surfaces on the moody "I Got Mine", which sounds as if it were samples from some old Warner Bros. cartoon. The Black Keys also invited in a few special guests: guitarist Marc Ribot and clarinetist-flautist (and Pat's uncle) Ralph Carney, both veterans of Tom Waits' band and players on countless avant-rock/jazz/noise session. Jessica Lea Mayfield a/k/a Chittlin, an impressive 18 year-old bluegrass/country singer from Kent, Ohio, sings alongside a heart-breakingly plaintive Auerbauch on the slow-dance final cut, "Things Ain't Like They Used to Be"

In Session Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan $49.99
45 RPM Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
In Session, recorded in 1983, is the only known recording of Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan performing together. Its long-overdue commercial release (the album didn't come out until 1999) stands as a fitting tribute to the genius of two of the greatest musicians ever to have played the blues on electric guitar. Now, it's available on vinyl for the first time.
Anyone who's witnessed a much-anticipated jam session only to be disappointed - with each participant deferring to the other, the end result being that neither ever got out of first gear — will welcome this pairing of two giants of blues guitar. Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan obviously shared a mutual admiration, but it simply wasn't in either one's makeup to a) be intimidated or b) take a backseat to anyone. Not without kicking up a little dust.
This is such a precious set to any fan of either of these blues giants. In addition to the free-spirited jams, there are priceless episodes of conversation between each song, both men exchanging accolades and King giving the much younger Vaughan (though tragically it was Vaughan who died first) some sage advice. This simply is a must-have.

These are the earliest-known recordings of Canned Heat with the primordial lineup of Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Stuart Brotman (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals), and either Keith Sawyer (drums), or perhaps his replacement, Frank Cook (drums), who joined circa 1966. Another notable name among the personnel listed on the original LP jacket is rhythm and blues legend, Johnny Otis as producer. This is certainly fitting, as the Heat wind their way through compact, high-energy versions of a variety of selections, directly contrasting the longer psychedelic showcases that would evolve over the next few years. Their almost cerebral respect for their predecessors would have suggested that the band hailed from anywhere other than their Topanga Canyon digs. However, Wilson, Vestine, and Hite were consummate students of authentic R&B, as evidenced by their practically note-for-note transcriptions of tunes from Chicago icons such as Muddy Waters ("Got My Mojo Working"), Willie Dixon ("Spoonful" and "Pretty Thing"), John Lee Hooker ("Louise" and "Dimples"), and Elmore James ("Rollin' and Tumblin'.") The latter cut is actually presented in two distinct renderings — with and without Wilson's hard-hitting harmonica leads, closely resembling the sound of their self-titled debut, Canned Heat (1967) from the following year. A second holdover is "Big Road Blues," which is also given a similar driving beat and an otherwise solid reading.

The Healer John Lee Hooker $33.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
The Healer was oddly a major mainstream breakthrough for John Lee Hooker. The album was one of the first to feature a wide array of guest stars, including Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos and Carlos Santana. The album immediately captured widespread media attention because of all the superstar musicians involved in its production and has to date been John Lee's most successful release. Recorded in analog and mixed to 1/4" 15ips analog tape, the sound is better than almost any other Hooker recording. Transferred from the original 1/4" analog tapes by Bernie Grundman using Classic's "all tube" cutting system, gives this release a warmth and comfort it has never had. If you're a John Lee Hooker fan then this a must! Great sound and classic Hooker guitar and vocal performances.

"Lightnin' is among the rewarding acoustic dates Lightnin' Hopkins delivered in the early '60s. The session has an informal, relaxed quality, and this approach serves a 48-year-old Hopkins impressively well on both originals like 'Thinkin' 'Bout an Old Friend' and the familiar 'Katie Mae' and enjoyable interpretations of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee's 'Back to New Orleans' and Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup's 'Mean Old Frisco.' Hopkins' only accompaniment consists of bassist Leonard Gaskin and drummer Belton Evans, both of whom play in an understated fashion and do their part to make this intimate setting successful. From the remorseful 'Come Back Baby' to more lighthearted, fun numbers like 'You Better Watch Yourself' and 'Automobile Blues,' Lightnin' is a lot like being in a small club with Hopkins as he shares his experiences, insights and humor with you." - All Music Guide

Burning Hell John Lee Hooker $49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
When Riverside Records recorded this John Lee Hooker session in 1959, producer Bill Grauer asked the Mississippi moaner to play acoustic guitar, much in the manner he had years earlier, before coming North, plugging in, and creating "boogie lightnin'." The result, on which Hooker put his distinct stamp on tunes associated with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins and Big Bill Broonzy, as well as a number of his own highly personal compositions, is a country blues classic.

Two Men With The Blues Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis $19.99
Vinyl LP Reissue - 2 LPs Sealed
The event was simply billed as "Willie Nelson Sings the Blues," but the historic two-night stand on January 12 and 13, 2007 at Jazz at Lincoln Center was far more than that. Call it a summit meeting between two American icons, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis, two of the most significant figures in modern-day country and jazz, who discovered common ground in their love for jazz standards and the blues. Their performance stirred the sounds of New Orleans, Nashville, Austin and New York City into a brilliantly programmed mix that was equal parts down-home and cosmopolitan, with plenty of swing and just a touch of melancholy. To say that these shows were a hot ticket would be an understatement. Luckily, the tapes were rolling and the results of this unique collaboration now constitute the Blue Note album Two Men With The Blues for everyone who couldn't cram into The Allen Room. Featuring great playing from one of the hottest bands around these classic tracks are given new life by the extraordinary dual talents of Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis. At a time when most people are thinking of retirement, Willie has never been busier. His profile has been high in recent weeks with his various career retrospective releases and sold out tour and this album can rightly stake it's place alongside anything else he has done. Wynton rarely sounds so relaxed and both of these musical giants are clearly having the time of their lives together on these new interpretations of some of the greatest songs of the 20th century.

Limited edition vinyl LP pressing of the uber-successful album from this UK vocalist. 'Back To Black' is the second album from London-based chanteuse Amy Winehouse. Although her 2003 debut was a success, her rowdy offstage behavior became the focus of tabloids and critics instead of the music. Because of this, Winehouse stepped out of the spotlight and concentrated on putting the focus back on her music. Three years later, her sophomore release has surprised critics and excited her fanbase. Combining a strong, Jazzy vocal style with often frank lyrical content recounting tales of love and loss, Winehouse is a truly talented songwriter with a good ear for melody, making this album an essential purchase. The mythology of American blues is filled with images of the lone musician standing at the crossroads, caught in that gray area between light and shadow, cutting impossible deals with dark forces, offering up nothing less than his soul as collateral. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal, a two-time Grammy winner and one of the most influential American blues and roots artists of the past half-century, has made no Faustian deals in his long and distinguished career, but he stands at an important crossroads nonetheless. In his never-ending exploration of the complex origins and underpinnings of American music, he has forged a four-decade career by gathering and distilling countless musical traditions from a range of geographical and cultural sources: the Mississippi Delta, the Appalachian backwoods, the African continent, the Hawaiian islands, Europe, the Caribbean and so much more.
Maestro, his first U.S. release in five years, marks the 40th Anniversary of Taj’s rich and varied recording career by mixing original material with chestnuts from vintage sources and newcomers alike. But Maestro is much more than just a tribute to past glories. It captures the same level of intensity and depth that has characterized every one of Taj’s recordings since his self-titled debut album in 1968. Simply put, four decades have done nothing to dilute his energy quotient. “The one thing I’ve always demanded of the records I’ve made is that they be danceable,” he says. “This record is danceable, it’s listenable, it has lots of different rhythms, it’s accessible, it’s all right in front of you. It’s a lot of fun, and it represents where I am at this particular moment in my life.” Also features special guest appearances from Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Angelique Kidjo, Los Lobos, Ziggy Marley and the Phantom Blues Band among others.

For the middle album of his Johnny Winter-produced, late-'70s music trilogy, blues giant Muddy Waters brought a new spirit to some familiar material. Starting with members of Waters' touring band: Pinetop Perkins, Bob Margolin and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Winter added underrated guitarist (and longtime Waters foil) Jimmy Rogers and extraordinary harp player Big Walter Horton to the mix. The songs recorded for I'm Ready offer a mix of new material and vintage hit singles like the title cut, the mid-'60s jewel "Screamin' and Cryin' " and the Willie Dixon-penned classic "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man."
