Bob Dylan Live 1964 (200 Gram)
Bob Dylan
$79.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - 3 LPs Box Set Sealed
Temporarily out of stock
|
Another in the series of Classic Legacy Bob Dylan Bootleg series on Vinyl. This edition was cut from the 1/2" analog master tape on the Classic all tube cutting system by Bernie Grundman and features a deluxe box housing three LP's - each in unique jackets. Also included is a 60 pg 12 x 12 perfect bound booklet, and a custom 12" x 8" letter pressed vintage tour poster. Available in both 140g conventional profile and 200g QUIEX SV-P editions. It does seem strange, very strange indeed, to be hearing an official release of this historic concert, which has been available as a bootleg for decades. The Halloween gig at Philharmonic Hall in New York was a special part of the tour for Another Side of Bob Dylan, arguably his greatest acoustic recording. What's more poignant, however, is how it previews the material on Bringing It All Back Home. While the songs on Another Side hinted at things to come, nothing could have prepared audiences for the dreamy surrealism of "Mr. Tambourine Man," or the nightmarish abstract poetry of "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)," and "Gates Of Eden" all of which appear on Disc One The remainder of the material comes from Dylan's preceding catalog; there are stirring protest and topical songs, folk songs, humorous narratives, love songs, great wisecracks, and talking blues ("Talking John Birch Paranoid Blues!"), most of them classics "With God on Our Side," "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," "Times They Are A-Changin'," "Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll," "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," "Mama You've Been on My Mind," "All I Really Want to Do," "It Ain't Me Babe," etc. All of these songs and many others (there are 17 in all) are delivered with the confidence of the seasoned performer; a man who knows his audience and how to handle them. It's not cynical, not detached, just masterful. For those unfamiliar with this set, Joan Baez makes an appearance near the end of the show, and duets with Dylan on four cuts including an amazing read of "Silver Dagger." It is true that if you possess the boot, you have all the music here, and chances are, it has some pretty good sound. But you'll need this version, too. For starters, the sound is spectacular, wonderfully warm and immediate, and the transfer is extremely clean with wonderful dynamics. Secondly, the package is deluxe. In addition to a fine essay by Princeton historian and author Sean Wilentz (he made the gig when he was 13), there are a truckload of killer photos from the show and the period, along with complete discographical information that puts the bootleg packages to shame. For those interested in the acoustic Bob Dylan, this concert is like the grail; his voice is in impeccable shape, and his delivery is revelatory. For those interested in the transition from acoustic to electric, this show is the seam, and for who are diehard fans, this is another welcome item in the official catalog. Thom Jurek.

Bob Dylan
$99.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - 3 LPs Box Set Sealed
Temporarily out of stock
|
This is the second in the series of Classic Dylan, over the top,
LP boxed sets. On the
heals of the January 1975 release of "Blood on the Tracks", Dylan
decided to assemble an Old Timey Medicine Show troupe of performers
and mount the now historic tour. Originally the tour was to be
called the Montezuma Revue but was changed to the Rolling Thunder
Revue and includes the likes of Joan Baez who performs on "Blowin'
In The Wind" and "Mama" and Roger McGuinn who performs on "Knockin'
On Heaven's Door" along with Joni Mitchell and Ramblin' Jack Elliott
who add vocal and guitar support. This release was mixed from the
original 24 track tapes down to 1/2" analog tapes from which the 3
LP's are cut. In addition the set includes a 7"45 rpm blue vinyl
single of a never before released alternate version of "Tangled Up
in Blue" coupled with the alternate version of "Isis" as a B-side.
The 3 LP's, 7" single, 70+ page perfect bound 12" x 12" book along
with a reproduction of the original tour poster, two show tickets,
and the hand bill are housed in a deluxe Gold foil embossed slip
case. It is one of the most insane packages we've ever put
together and is a must have for any serious music fan.
Also includes 70 page book

This is the soundtrack from the Movie,
starring, along with an all star cast including Jessica Lange, John Goodman,
Melanie Cruse, Ed Harris, Jeff Bridges among many others, the Dylan Man
himself. The Movie has received mixed reviews which means it is probably
worth seeing but the soundtrack is great featuring a myriad of Dylan tunes
covered by an international cast of musicians in a host of styles. There
are also four tunes that Dylan himself covers, two of which are brand new
versions. This is a must have for any serious Dylan fan or music lover.
This package is a two LP set with a gorgeous gatefold jacket and printed
inner sleeves. A top recommendation.

 Scoop
Pete Townshend
$29.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Pete Townshend's demos had grown legendary among Who collectors well before
the official release of the double-album Scoop in 1983. On each demo,
Townshend worked out full arrangements, which the Who would often follow
exactly. He also recorded a wealth of songs and instrumental pieces that
never made it to record. Over the course of two albums, Scoop features 25 of
these demos, including both classic Who songs ("So Sad About Us," "Bargain,"
"Behind Blue Eyes," "Magic Bus," "Love Reign O'er Me") and unreleased gems
("Politician," "Melancholia," "To Barney Kessell," "Mary"). Occasionally,
the songs sound better in their demo versions, particularly on latter-day
Who songs, which were over-wrought in their official incarnations. But what
makes Scoop so fascinating is its revelation of the depth and detail of
Townshend's imagination, and how he refined his ideas. But even casual fans
will find the sheer musicality of the record worthwhile it's one of the
most focused and impressive albums he has ever released.

 Scoop Three
Pete Townshend
$54.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - 3 LPs Sealed
|
In a world of trendy popsters, the "King of Rock Royalty" emerges solo with a new masterpiece. Scoop 3 is a continuation of Townshend's infamous "Scoop" projects, proving that carefully orchestrated lullabys, such as I Think I Like It the Way It Is, can co-exist with the cutting, raw power of bedroom style recording in Dirty Water. Townshend miraculously brings to life a notebook of his art in a fashion that may seem a bit unorthodox to some, but fully realized to devoted music lovers of all ages. This three LP set offers many moods to travel through, only to realize that Townshend is still a sure bet when it comes to pleasure, beauty, and intensity.

Recorded by Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix) while Peter Frampton was still in the band, Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore captures an early performance by Humble Pie where Steve Marriot's lyricism and ideas where balanced by Frampton's searing lead guitar. This is a document of a band at a pivotal point in their existence, this is valuable and at times insightful. Boomtown
David and David
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - Sealed
|
David & David's Boomtown is a hard look at urban life in the 1980s, a time when many were fulfilling the American Dream of financial success and upward mobility. It is not an easy album to listen to, as the characters depicted in the songs are often dealing with major problems such as drugs and domestic violence. But it is an artful record, full of poetry and convincing stories of the hard times that many silently endured. At times the record is full of pop hooks, and at other stages a more bleak sound dominates. The vocals of David & David are also effective in telling the tales, as often there is a shrill, despondent quality that complements what is being related to the listener. In particular, the drums have kind of a hushed sound to them, and the guitars often purvey sounds of doom through distortion or other means. "Welcome to the Boomtown" is the hit off the album, and is one of various cuts that convincingly detail the many trials of the characters such as Kevin, who "deals dope out of Denny's keeps a table in the back." Although there are often hints of hope and seemingly a sense of compassion toward the subjects in the songs, it is not apparent that most will eventually pull themselves out of their predicaments. One may not want to listen to this record to lift the spirit, but it is a strong reminder of difficult situations faced during what can be perceived by many as the best of times.

3. Ain't So Easy

 Who Came First
Pete Townshend
$24.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - Sealed
|
Pete Townshend's first solo album is a homespun, charming forum for low-key, personal songs that weren't deemed suitable for The Who, as well as spiritual paeans (direct and indirect) to his spiritual guru Meher Baba. Who fans will be immediately attracted by the presence of a couple of songs from the aborted Who concept album Lifehouse (much of which ended up on Who's Next), "Pure & Easy" and "Let's See Action." The Who did eventually release their own versions of both those songs. This record shows a folkier and gentler side to The Who's chief muse. "Sheraton Gibson" is a neat tune about rock & roll road life, and "Time Is Passing" takes very subtle inspiration from Baba. Most of the rest of the album contains some of the most unusual pieces Townshend has released: his acoustic cover of Jim Reeves' "There's A Heartache Following Me" (recorded because it was one of Baba's favorite tunes), "Evolution" (which is actually pretty much a solo track by his buddy Ronnie Lane of The Faces), "Parvardigar" (adapted from Baba's Universal Prayer), and "Content" (a philosophical poem by Maud Kennedy that Townshend put to music). Transferred from the two track 1/4 analog masters on the Bernie Grundman all tube cutting system and pressed on Classic s 200g QUIEX Super Vinyl Profile.

 Warm Your Heart
Aaron Neville
$32.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - Sealed
|
Warm Your Heart - A star studded effort on Neville's part, collaborating
with Linda Ronstadt, Rita Coolidge, Dr. John, David Lindley among others.
The album starts with a great version of Randy Newman's "Louisiana" and also
includes "Feels Like Rain", "Ave Maria", "Please Stay", "Feels Like Rain",
"Angola Bound" as well as the hit "Close Your Eyes" as a duet with Ronstadt.
This longtime audiophile favorite was produced by Neville, Ronstadt and
George Massenburg who also engineered and mixed the tracks. This is one of
those records that gets to the end of a side too quickly; but what a delight
when you turn it over to play the other side! Mastered from the original
master tapes and cut on an "all tube" cutting system by Bernie "The Wizard"
Grundman. Not to be missed.

 Life for Rent
Dido
$32.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Life for Rent doesn't offer anything that drastically different from Dido's debut album, No Angel the dance beats are fresher, the production is clean and new Dido is successful at modest songs. She has a sweet, warm voice and a knack for tuneful modern folk-pop that sounds intimate while being confidently catchy and nicely atmospheric. In other words, it retains the feel of No Angel but contributing songs like "White Flag," "Stoned," "Life for Rent," and "Do You Have a Little Time," which are all memorable efforts. The appeal of Life for Rent is what makes Dido appealing she's unassuming and gentle, but her songs are so melodic and atmospheric they easily work their way into the subconscious, and the records are well-crafted enough to be engaging on repeated plays. So, Life for Rent isn't much different than its predecessor, but that's a very good thing in this case as this will surely become an audiophile favorite, cut from the original master on the Bernie Grundman all tube cutting system and pressed on Classic s 180g QUIEX Super Vinyl Profile.

Bridge Over Troubled Water was one of the biggest selling albums of its
decade, and it hasn't fallen too far down on the list in the 30-plus years
since. The album was perhaps the most delicately textured album to close out
the 1960s from any major rock act. Bridge Over Troubled Water, at its most
ambitious and bold, on its title track, was a quietly reassuring album; at
other times, it was personal yet soothing; and at other times, it was just
plain fun.

Ray Charles
$49.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Temporarily out of stock

This is the famous version of Porgy and Bess that was supposed to have Gladys Knight singing the part of Bess. When Ray Charles offered the part to Gladys, having just come of the hit "Midnight train to Georgia", her manager at the time, would only allow her to participate if she owned the masters. According to Ray, he said, "well now you know that just won't be possible" to which her manager responded that she wouldn't be available. Ray told me that his mother taught him the meaning of "NO" and hence he asked Cleo Laine, who did a beautiful job of singing the part. Ray was also in top form as this 2 LP edition mastered from the original analog masters shows very clearly. Now available on 200g Quiex Super Vinyl Profile for the first time. A must have!

 Birdy
Peter Gabriel
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Peter Gabriel's first foray into soundtracks was for Alan Parker's
contemplative film Birdy and is a successful companion piece, providing a
backdrop that is moody and evocative. Nearly half of the album's dozen
tracks incorporate threads from material found on Gabriel's 1982 Security
set, including "Close Up," which makes use of keyboard passages from "Family
Snapshot," and "The Heat," which is a reworking of "The Rhythm of the Heat"
and builds to a frenzied percussive crescendo. Material specially written
for this project includes the murky opening track, "At Night," the tribal
"Floating Dogs," and "Slow Marimbas," a track which would become part of
future live performances. The fact that Birdy is comprised of all
instrumentals and its meditative nature makes it fine, reflective listening
for the more adventurous. The transfer was from the original two track 1/2"
analog master tapes provided by Peter Gabriel's Real World for cutting the
master lacquers. The detail, clarity and bottom octave weight are superb!

One of the most debated over and sought after audiophile
titles, Casino Royale has graced many "Top Ten" lists for
decades. This quirky soundtrack, to the equally zany James
Bond spoof, features music and arrangements by the prolific
and very hip Burt Bacharach. The highlight of the set is a
breathy rendition of The Look of Love, by the late Dusty
Springfield. The main theme and supporting incidental
music are by Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass. The sound
captured by the young engineer (but soon-to-be Super Producer,
Phil Ramone) is still stunning, more than 30 years later.

Belafonte at Carnegie Hall (200 Gram)
Harry Belafonte
$124.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Classic Records is proud to announce the reintroduction of the long out of
print best selling Classic - Belafonte at Carnegie Hall. This two LP
gatefold edition features authentic original artwork and labels and was
transferred from the original three track session master tapes. Using the
original Classic metal parts Classic has now re-released this legendary
title on our proprietary 200 gram QUIEX Super Vinyl Profile. What are the
differences between our original 180g conventional profile pressings and the
new QUIEX SV-P pressings? For one, the clarity is greatly enhanced.
Belafonte feels more "in the room" because of the added low level spatial
information that now comes through. The new QUIEX SV-P pressing is flat
across the record profile which provides better coupling to the platter
surface thereby reducing resonant feedback. Also, the flat profile greatly
reduces "groove distortion" that is present in conventional concave profiles
- this makes the playback level seem louder due to the reduced groove
distortion. All things considered this 200 gram QUIEX SV-P pressing is the
closet to the sound on the master tape as we have ever been able to achieve!
Alas, it is too bad that it is not at 45 rpm.....maybe next year!

Diana Krall sings like she truly loves the holidays and holiday songs. On this beautiful production by Tommy LiPuma and Al Schmidt, Diana is accompanied by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra
on tunes including holiday standards like "Jingle Bells" , "Let it Snow", "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "White Christmas." and "I'll Be Home for Christmas". Diana Krall swings like nobody's business on what will likely be the best holiday jazz record of the season. What makes this album truly special is the fact that it holds up as both a Christmas album and as a jazz record. It's perfect for chestnut-roasting weather, but you could also see spinning it in mid-July just for kicks. It's not mere hyperbole to say that this record sounds like an instant classic - appealing to everyone -- not just jazz fans. Mastered from the original two track 1/2" analog masters by Bernie Grundman on Classic's "All Tube" cutting system and pressed for optimal playback on Classic's Vinyl Profile the sound is fantastic - Diana is in the house. Lee Morgan Sextet (MONO)
Lee Morgan
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
|
Continuing where his debut left off, Morgan’s second LP in 1956 as a leader for Blue Note, finds the teen prodigy (still only 18) slowly emerging out from the long shadow of his idol and mentor Clifford Brown and feeling his own way among giants. You can hear his confidence growing in his solos, energized and fed by the company he has been keeping rather than any intimidation or hesitation at all. Excellent ensemble work must be credited to Benny Golson, who arranged four of the six numbers on the date. Led by a three-horn assault of Morgan’s trumpet, BN regular Hank Mobley on tenor and the fairly obscure altoist Kenny Rodgers, they cruise through a variety of tempos and moods, the highlights being their memorable takes on “Whisper Not” and “Where Am I”? As expected, Horace Silver’s piano, Paul Chambers’ bass and the drumming of Charlie Persip ! is both impeccable and tasteful throughout. Other selections include “Latin Hangover”, “His Sister”, “D’s Funk” and “Slightly Hep” Extremely hep is more like it. Mastered and cut by Bernie Grundman on Classic's "ALL TUBE PURE MONO" cutting system (not like others who
use a stereo cutting head which imparts "crosstalk" onto the groove cut) and pressed onto 200 gram QUIEX Super Vinyl Profile for maximum fidelity. Jackets are authentic "tip-on" and laminated (front only) as were the originals - and the labels have the desirable "deep groove". Another installment in the Classic Blue Note Signature Mono LP Series.

Come Away With Me (200 Gram)
Norah Jones
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Norah Jones's debut on Blue Note is a mellow, acoustic pop affair with soul
and country overtones, immaculately produced by the great Arif Mardin. (It's
pretty much an open secret that the 22-year-old vocalist and pianist is the
daughter of Ravi Shankar.) Jones is not quite a jazz singer, but she is
joined by some highly regarded jazz talent: guitarists Adam Levy, Adam
Rogers, Tony Scherr, Bill Frisell, and Kevin Breit; drummers Brian Blade,
Dan Rieser, and Kenny Wolleson; organist Sam Yahel; accordionist Rob Burger;
and violinist Jenny Scheinman. Her regular guitarist and bassist, Jesse
Harris and Lee Alexander, respectively, play on every track and also serve
as the chief songwriters. Both have a gift for melody, simple yet elegant
progressions, and evocative lyrics. (Harris made an intriguing guest
appearance on Seamus Blake's Stranger Things Have Happened.) Jones, for her
part, wrote the title track and the pretty but slightly restless
"Nightingale." She also includes convincing readings of Hank Williams's
"Cold Cold Heart," J.D. Loudermilk's "Turn Me On," and Hoagy Carmichael's
"The Nearness of You." There's a touch of Rickie Lee Jones in Jones's voice,
a touch of Bonnie Raitt in the arrangements; her youth and her piano skills
could lead one to call her an Alicia Keys for grown-ups. While the mood of
this record stagnates after a few songs, it does give a strong indication of
Jones' alluring talents.

Jimmy Rushing
$32.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
A one-off recording for the Colpix label in 1963, this set by "Mr. Five-By-Five"
further demonstrates the man could swing and sell a ballad, all with the same
conviction and style. A veteran of the Blue Devils, Benny Moten's band and the
early Count Basie ensembles, he became along with Big Joe Turner, one of the top
"blues shouters" in the Kansas City mode. As with most of the now-collectable
Colpix/Colgems recordings of the 1960s, the sound on this Rushing set is incredible, having been transferred
directly from the original 3 track masters, capturing the intimacy of his phrasing while letting the backing musicians cut
through in a crystal clear accompaniment. Highlights abound in jazz chestnuts and
newer tunes alike: Just Because, 'Tain't Nobody's Biz-Ness If I Do, Heartaches, I'm
Walkin' Through Heaven With You, Trouble In Mind, Please Come Home, You Always Hurt
The One You Love, My Bucket's Got A Hole In It and more.

 Double Bass
Gary Karr
$43.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Gary Karr became an audiophile favorite largely as a result of the King Super Analogue recording of Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor played by Gary Karr on solo bass with organ accompaniment. In 1959, Gary Karr made his first record entitled “Gary Karr Plays Double Bass” a collection of pieces from Eccles, Ravel, Bloch and others for Golden Crest Records. A few years later a second recording of Alec Wilder compositions for Bass and Piano and Bass and Guitar was also released on Golden Crest. On this outstanding second effort Gary Karr is accompanied by Bernie Leighton on piano and Fredrick Hand on guitar. After auditioning the master tapes we decided that these two wonderful recordings by a stellar bass musician needed to be reissued which is what we have done here by combining the recordings into a two disc set as part of the “Classic Records Presents…” Series. Both titles were mastered and transferred by Bernie Grundman in Hollywood California from the original analog master tapes and cut on Classic Records’ “All Tube” cutting system. If you are a Gary Karr fan then this is a must have release, If you are unfamiliar with “Mr. Bass” then these recording are a great place to start.

 Capuchin Swing
Jackie McLean
$33.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl MONO LP - Sealed
|
Considered one of his strongest Blue Note outings, Capuchin Swing basically forced McLean to bring in some heavyweights to help define and deliver his vision. First and foremost was Blue Mitchell’s forceful trumpet, chosen to counterpoint the leader’s alto, that was in a feisty mood of it’s own throughout the sessions. Having Walter Bishop, Jr. on piano, Paul Chambers’ bass and Art Taylor banging skins frees the leader’s mind of worry rhythm-wise, allowing him and Mitchell to co-explore new heights of interplay. The intensity on McLean originals such as “Francisco”, “Condition Blue” and the title tune are both riveting and sometimes draining, while Bishop contributes both “Just For Now” plus another dedication to the label founder, “On The Lion”. This Classic Blue Note Signature LP Reissue Series release was mastered and cut on Classic’s ALL TUBE MONO cutting system allowing the listener to hear the music as Rudy Van Gelder mixed and intended it to be heard – in PURE MONO with no “faux stereo” artifacts from using a stereo cutter head! As always this release features authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. Try and find an original that looks and sounds this good at any price!

Another one of Blue Note’s multi-talents who, as did label-mate Ike Quebec, besides recording a cadre of well-received albums, went on to produce titles for the label. On this, his second album for Blue Note, Atlanta native Pearson goes the trio route, giving the selections a relaxed but also highly lyrical keyboard approach. Gene Taylor’s bass and Lex Humphries’ drumming perfectly complete and balance the triad, with strong arrangements of “On Green Dolphin Street”, “When Sunny Gets Blue” and “I’m A Fool To Want You”. Sunny Side Up
Lou Donaldson
$33.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl MONO LP - Sealed
|
An excellent 1960 get-together with some fresh faces joining altoist LD. Long under-valued trumpeter Bill Hardman and especially pianist Duke Pearson assist in infusing probably more soul than even Donaldson expected into the arrangements. Augmented by Al Harewood’s impeccable timekeeping and Sam Jones and Laymon Jackson splitting time at the bass, the result is a fine mix, with strong writing contributions all-around. Attention should be paid to the originals offered up by Donaldson (“The Truth”, “Goose Grease”), Parlan (“Blues for J.P”) and Hardman (“Politely”), as should the smooth takes on the commonalities “Softly”, “As In A Morning Sunrise”, “The Man I Love” and “It’s You Or No One”. Mastered and cut on Classic’s ALL TUBE MONO cutting system and cutter head makes this the definitive version of this LP and possibly better than impossible to find original copies!

The Healer was oddly a major mainstream breakthrough for John Lee Hooker. The album was one of the first to feature a wide array of guest stars, including Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos and Carlos Santana. The album immediately captured widespread media attention because of all the superstar musicians involved in its production and has to date been John Lee's most successful release. Recorded in analog and mixed to 1/4" 15ips analog tape, the sound is better than almost any other Hooker recording. Transferred from the original 1/4" analog tapes by Bernie Grundman using Classic's "all tube" cutting system, gives this release a warmth and comfort it has never had. Tubular Bells
Mike Oldfield
$33.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed
|
MIKE OLDFIELD's TUBULAR BELLS: A quintessential "studio production" in pop music lore, Mike Oldfield conceived an eclectic mix of both standard and odd instruments, along with classical and rock elements, to achieve a steadily building, layered texture, totally unheard of at the time. After being shopped and rejected at other labels, Richard Branson chose it as the first release for his Virgin Records in 1972. Originally tagged with the working title Opus 1, Oldfield, who had been playing and recording professional since his teens, oversaw the entire production and played most of the parts himself, eventually layering over thirty different instruments and sounds. Listeners had fun trying to identify each and remember the order they appeared, as the late Vivian Stanshall (Bonzo Dog Band) ceremoniously announced each as it joined the mix. The original LP eventually sold over 16 million copies and topped the UK charts for weeks. The eerie opening section was famously featured in the soundtrack to the motion-picture The Exorcist, winning the Grammy in 1974 for Best Instrumental Composition. The original master tapes were used to cut both the original issue and this reissue making the original issue hard to best. With Chris Bellman doing the mastering honors using Classic's "all tube"ť cutting system and being pressed on Classic's proprietary Super Vinyl Profile sheds new light on, and a slight nod to the Classic reissue of, this longstanding audiophile favorite.

 Aqualung
Jethro Tull
$33.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP -Sealed

1971 saw the release of some of the greatest pop/rock albums of all time. Imagine, Pearl, Sticky Fingers, Who’s Next, Tupelo Honey, Surf’s Up, Fragile, Led Zep’s IV, Muswell Hillbillies, Tapestry, What’s Going On? and both Madman Across the Water and Tumbleweed Connection are just some of the iconic titles that hit the stores that year. Add Aqualung and that’s quite an output for a twelve month span. Generally considered the pinnacle of the band’s recorded output, front-man Ian Anderson’s songwriting was quickly evolving from British folk-blues roots and helping define prog-rock. While definitely pushing the envelope for the era in taking on the subjects of God and organized religion, it was guitarist Martin Barre who was establishing equal ground with Anderson’s flute as an instrumental voice of the band. Joining Tull after Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath) who himself had replaced original guitarist Mick Abrahams (Blodwyn Pig, Mick Abrahams Band) departed after only a few days, both Barre’s opening riffs and lead breaks became indelibly imprinted to generations of classic rock. Songs such as My God, Hymn 43, Locomotive Breath, Cross-Eyed Mary, Wind Up and of course the title tune became FM radio staples and are in-demand concert favorites to this day. The Classic Records reissue of Aqualung was cut from the original analog master tapes obtained from Ian Anderson on Classic's "all tube" cutting system by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman mastering. This version features, for the first time since the original Chrysalis release, an authentic faux linen textured gatefold jacket and original label art.

Lou Donaldson With The Three Sounds
$33.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed

A perfect pairing from 1959 of fellow Blue Note roster mates that result in one of Donaldson’s finest pure bop sessions. The trio, anchored by pianist Gene Harris, is a cool departure from standard quintets the front man normally had been booking. Lou’s tenor is the focal point, front and center of course but the threesome, completed by Andy Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy behind the drum kit, takes a backseat to no one. With ample support and balance, they assist LD in re-defining Tin Pan Alley ditties such as Blue Moon and Three Little Words into hardened jazz romps while bringing plenty to the table on Donaldson originals such as Smooth Groove and Jump Up. Blowin' The Blues Away (MONO)
The Horace Silver Quintet & Trio
$33.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
|
Along with his “Songs For My Father”, Blowin’ The Blues Away constantly ranks as one of pianist Horace Silver’s finest group of original compositions. For decades, only former band-mate in the original Jazz Messengers ensemble, Art Blakey, could match Silver in ears for talent and the feeding grounds their groups became, spawning players who later became jazz giants. The group assembled here is no exception. This exact line-up would eventually stay in-tack, becoming the incarnation of the first Blue Mitchell Quintet, with Chick Corea replacing Silver. The afore-mentioned Blue Mitchell along with Junior Cook on tenor, Gene Taylor’s bass and drummer Louis Hayes help Silver deliver a fine mix of tempos including the ballad Peace and the gospel/soul-tinged Sister Sadie, both of which became jazz standards. On The St. Vitus Dance and Melancholy Mood, Silver reverts back to his early trio days with confidence and imagination. As part of the Classic Blue Note Signature LP reissue Series this reissue was mastered and cut on Classic’s ALL TUBE MONO cutting system from tape head to cutter head and featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. Great record – highly recommended!

 By Numbers
The Who
$33.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Having to follow four monumental releases in succession, The Who By Numbers is often overlooked and unfairly overshadowed. Produced again by Glyn Johns and released in 1975, the album is a more modest, simple affair, certainly withstanding the test of time by its own merits. In what might be his most personal tell-all collection (outside of some of his future solo albums), Pete Townshend lays it out there in lyrics of brutal honesty regarding battles with alcoholism and womanizing. Probably best known for the radio-friendly ditty Squeeze Box, the set also contains patented Who in the terms of Slip Kid, Blue Red and Grey plus one of bassist John Entwistle’s best compositions, Success Story. London studio regular Nicky Hopkins adds tasteful keyboard fills throughout. As part of the Classic Who LP reissue series, this title was mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering from the original Ľ” analog master tapes sourced directly from The Who. The lacquers were cut on Classic Records ALL ANALOG TUBE cutting system with LP’s pressed on Classic’s Super Vinyl Profile for maximum playback fidelity. Authentic UK artwork and labels are meticulously reproduced making this another MUST HAVE Classic reissue!

This 1959 12” is made up of two distinct sessions, including Jackie McLean’s first as a leader for the label. These sides helped establish him as one of the finest young alto voices on the jazz scene. Although a strong album through-and-through, the strongest material lay in the interplay between the altoist and the still under-appreciated tenor Tina Brooks. A great and unique alto/tenor tandem was born and sadly short-lived, due to Brook’s demise at a young age. But the handful of selections they were able to create on this and a few other Blue Note releases are superb. Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, Sonny Clark, Kenny Drew and Billy Mitchell collectively make McLean’s album debut, memorable. As part of the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Reissue Series this reissue was mastered and cut from the original analog master tapes on Classic’s ALL TUBE MONO cutting system and featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. This release like all in the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Series is pressed in our proprietary non-groove guard flat profile featuring the “deep groove” in the center label!

 Aqualung

Excuse me, is this 1969, during the time when Rock bands released an
album every nine to twelve months and they
were all great? Last summer Neil Young recorded what will likely be
remembered as one of his best albums ever in
"Prairie Wind" and then eight months later delivers a new protest
album that will make, even the most conservative thinkers,
rethink the state of the world. Maybe it takes the wisdom of time
and experience to drill down to the heart of
issues these days instead of the open mindedness of youth as in the
past. It isn't one of the newer bands on the scene shining
a light on the ugly side of human nature, they are all trying to sell
a million records ( make that five million records) so that they
buy that house in the Hills. Instead it is the old man of ROCK AND
ROLL that delivers the familiar one two punch that makes
people question the course we are on. Regardless of your politics,
"Living WIth War" will rock your world and hit a chord that
needs to be struck.

 Who's Next (140 Gram)
The Who
$19.99
140 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
At the beginning of the 70s, the impact of Tommy weighed heavily on Pete Townshend's shoulders. How on earth would he and the Who top such a successful and important album? The guitarist-songwriter felt he had to take his music and its conceptual strains one step further. He began writing a futuristic fable that would transcend itself beyond the usual conventions of modern music. Intended to be a film, a play, a concert, a mega multimedia and cerebral experience - Townshend called his new project Lifehouse. And although Lifehouse would stay frozen on the blocks for another 30 years, its seeds sprouted the Who's most cohesive and consistent effort, Who's Next. How Townshend's ambitious follow-up ended up as Who's Next isn't easy to discern. After several false starts and a break with Who manager/mentor, Kit Lambert, the record was eventually rescued and shaped by producer/engineer, Glyn Johns. Much of Townshend's vision was contained within his extensive demos -- bits and pieces of a loosely constructed storyline set against experimental melodies and basic backbeats. The album's opening track, "Baba O'Riley," was originally an elongated cycle of synthesizer loops. What it became was an anthem, highlighted by a tumultuous build, Dave Arbus' rambling violin and Roger Daltrey's acclamation of a "Teenage Wasteland." The thunder is sustained by the contagious "Bargain" - now, like so much of the Who's music, a commercial jingle. "Love Ain't For Keeping" chugs away against a fierce acoustic rhythm while John Entwistle's sole contribution of "My Wife" remains one of his most electrifying songs. "This Song Is Over" features Nicky Hopkins' incomparable piano work and ends with a chorus pulled from "Pure And Easy," the central number of Lifehouse that failed to make the final cut, but would resurface three years later on the Odds And Sods compilation. The theme is maintained on "Getting In Tune," reintroduced during the Who's most recent tour, and "Going Mobile," a track with Townshend on lead vocals that recounts a couple of Lifehouse's characters cruising the streets in a Cadillac. It's the album's two singles that set up the grand finale. "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" are adrenaline-filled powder kegs that capture the Who in their most primal state. Keith Moon's drumming is as wild as ever, yet enduringly steady. Entwistle's sturdy bass and Townshend's barking guitar rise and shift as Daltrey's signature scream radiates with emotion and authority during the climax. This is arguably one of the Who's greatest triumphs ever put on record. And indisputably one of the most definitive moments in all of rock and roll. - Review by Shawn Perry Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman mastering from the original two track 1/4" analog master tapes, cut on the Classic "All Tube" cutting system, and pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g Quiex Super Vinyl Profile. This release also features original Track labels and artwork. Arguably one of Rock's greatest recordings - enough said! NOW AVAILABLE 140gm Vinyl

Generally considered one of rocks first concept™ albums, this December 1967 release was preceded by two months with its first single release, the monster hit “I Can See For Miles”. Recorded in London, New York and Los Angeles including some post-production at the famed Gold Star Studios, this album was a turning point in the band’s progression, weaving pure pop power with minor psychedelia
in both a humorous mockery and tribute to Britain’s pirate radio scene, complete with faux commercials written and performed by the band, interspersed between songs. Also included is their second single “Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand” plus the mini-drama “Rael”, featuring Al Kooper on organ, which was originally intended as a full scale rock-opera by itself and propelled Pete Townsend to the realizations of both Tommy and Quadrophenia. The Stereo version was mastered and cut at Bernie Grundman Mastering by Chris Bellman on Classic's "all tube" Stereo cutting system from the original Stereo master tapes provided by The Who. This deluxe reissue package includes original TRACK artwork and labels and an authentic reproduction of the "Psychedelic Poster" included in original pressings of this title which are now nearly impossible to find other than on eBay for many hundreds of dollars.

 The Experience Sessions
Noel Redding
$14.99
Vinyl LP (Burgandy) - Sealed
|
Noel Redding: The Experience Sessions presents a
collection of rare and previously unreleased studio recordings made by
Redding during his two-and-threequarter-year tenure with the Jimi Hendrix
Experience, and also contains the master takes of his two stand-out original
compositions, Electric LadylandLittle Miss Strange and Axis: Bold As
Love. Previously unreleased alternate recordings of these
two essential tracks are included, offering fascinating insight into the
inner-workings of the group in the studio. This disc is also a cause for
celebration simply for the fact that three of the tracks, the previously
unissued Nothing Wrong Noel˘â€s?‰â€z?¢???s Tune [Take  plus an
out-of-print live rendition of Red House, feature blistering guitar work
from Jimi Hendrix. The basic rhythm track of the album opener, There Aint Nothing Wrong, was recorded December 28, 1967 by Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell,
and Traffic guitarist Dave Mason during the Electric Ladyland sessions, and
it is a thrill to hear previously unearthed examples of Jimis genius
during this highly creative period for himself and the band. This recording
is particularly unique in that Noel, under the direction of former Jimi
Hendrix Experience producer Chas Chandler in 1989, composed lyrics, recorded
a lead vocal, and added new bass parts to this previously unissued Jimi
Hendrix session. Noel s Tune [Take1], recorded days after the Experiences historic February 24, 1969 performance at London s Royal Albert
Hall, is a rave-up rocker featuring Noel pounding away on funky rhythm
guitar while Jimi adds appropriately intense guitar work. Red House recorded live at the Olympia Theater in Paris on January 29, 1968, is a rare
example of Noel recreating the studio take by forgoing the use of the bass
in favor of bass-heavy rhythm guitar; Jimi s playing on this high-energy
track is simply spectacular. It was in the aftermath of the release of
Axis: Bold As Love that Noel began to develop new solo material in earnest.
Noel Redding: The Experience Sessions presents the much sought-after
unreleased tracks Dream and Walking Through the Garden, both of which
feature Noel on guitar and Jimi on bass, plus a previously unissued demo of How Can I Live? Noel would later re-record the song without Hendrix and
include the new version as part of his first post-Experience release, Fat
Mattress. Mastered from the original analog master tapes, under the
supervision of Eddie Kramer, by George Marino at Sterling Sound in New York
and released in cooperation with Experience Hendrix by Classic on our

It was 35 years ago at about this time that Jimi Hendrix took the stage at the Fillmore East in New York to perform a set that would become, in part, one of the best Live albums ever recorded - entitled simply "Band of Gypsys". In fact, Hendrix played two nights at the Fillmore, the second performance being on New Years day 1970 after a rousing performance on New Years eve 1969. To celebrate the beginning of the new decade, Fillmore East impresario Bill Graham went to great length to ensure a special evening for his patrons, dressing his ushers in special shirts and placing toy tambourines on each of the venue's 2,639 seats. He strode onstage and introduced "some very old friend with a brand-new name" As the sold-out crowd roared in approval, Jimi led his trio through a scintillating 75 minute set. Hendrix was ON this night delivering perhaps his finest live performance. His playing was focused and precise. In fact, for most of the set, Hendrix stood motionless, a far cry from the stage antics that helped establish his reputation as a performer. Equipment problems had plagued him in past live shows as well, but everything was perfect for the Fillmore shows. His absolute mastery of his guitar and effects is even more amazing considering that this was the first time he used the Fuzz Face, wah-wah pedal, Univibe, AND Octavia pedals on stage together. The guitar tones he gets on "Who Knows" and "Power to Love" are powerful and intense, but nowhere is his absolute control more evident than on "Machine Gun," where Hendrix conjures bombs, guns, and other sounds of war from his guitar, all within the context of a coherent musical statement. The solo on "Machine Gun" totally rewrote the book on what a man could do with an electric guitar and is arguably the most groundbreaking and devastating guitar solo ever. At midnight, when the strains of the Guy Lombardo Orchestra's "Auld Lang Syne" filled the theatre, the Band of Gypsys appeared back on stage, Jimi launching into his own arrangement of the traditional year-opener, a beautiful rendition that captivated the audience immediately. Now Classic Records brings back this legendary title for the first time on our Quiex 200g Super Vinyl Profile. George Marino and Eddie Kramer mastered and cut the lacquers from the original analog two track masters at Sterling Sound in New York with Michael Fremer in attendance in 1998. The legend lives on as do our memories of one of Rock's greatest performers - Jimi Hendrix.

The first of three solo albums by the ex-Genesis singer,
all to be officially released as only "Peter Gabriel". In
time, the three would take on "also-known-as" nicknames
based on the front-cover artwork of each. This volume is
usually referred to as Peter Gabriel (I, Car). In 1977
there was much anticipation for the first solo effort from
the flamboyant Gabriel. Three years had passed since his
swan song with Genesis. He had certainly exited on a high
note indeed with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. While fans
shouldn't have worried about the survival of Genesis without
their original lead singer, neither would they be disappointed
in his solo debut. Produced by Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice
Cooper), he addressed the split with his band mates in the
allegoric hit "Solsbury Hill", while retaining the art-rock
sensibilities he had pioneered. The balance of the album,
transferred from the artist's personal original master tapes,
includes other concert favorites, such as Moribund The
Burgermeister, Modern Love, Excuse Me, Humdrum, Slowburn,
Waiting For the Big One, Down The Dolce Vita (featuring the

A Stereo copy of Lonely and Blue, Orbison's first Monument release in 1961,

truely compare the Mono and Stereo versions of the titles cut from the same
two track original masters that were originally used for the first issues.
The Mono is cut from a folding of the stereo channels as specified by Porter
originally. The stereo versions have historically been more sought after
because of their relative scarcity but which is really better? Many would

are also four tunes that Dylan himself covers, two of which are brand new

A second collected volume of demo versions of songs destined to be considered for recording by The Who, this 1987 release on Atco Records is as an even stronger collection than it's 1983 predecessor. It (again) contains rough, acoustic workups of many Who standards in their infant form such as You Better You Bet, Pinball Wizard, Happy Jack, Substitute, Pictures of Lily and The Kids Are Alright among others. The curiosity lies solely in the head-arrangements on songs that were to become associated with time and enveloped within, Roger Daltry's vocal gymnastics. Here, sung by Townshend himself, one can sense the writer's distinct persona. . The comparison to eventual "more famous" versions is fascinating in most cases. The exposure of these workups reveals how great these songs really are, stripped down. Other selections include Girl In A Suitcase, Brooklyn Kids, Football Fugue, Long Live Rock, Call me Lightning, Holly Like Ivy, Begin The Beguine, Vicious Interlude, La-La-Lies, Cat Snatch, Prelude ##556, Baroque Ippenese, Praying The Game, Drifting Blues, Christmas, Don't Let Go The Coat, Prelude: The Right To Write, Never Ask Me, Ask Yourself, The Ferryman and The Shout.
