14. Scene Report
It was 35 years ago at about this time that Jimi Hendrix took the stage at the Fillmore East in New York to perform a set that would become, in part, one of the best Live albums ever recorded - entitled simply "Band of Gypsys". In fact, Hendrix played two nights at the Fillmore, the second performance being on New Years day 1970 after a rousing performance on New Years eve 1969. To celebrate the beginning of the new decade, Fillmore East impresario Bill Graham went to great length to ensure a special evening for his patrons, dressing his ushers in special shirts and placing toy tambourines on each of the venue's 2,639 seats. He strode onstage and introduced "some very old friend with a brand-new name" As the sold-out crowd roared in approval, Jimi led his trio through a scintillating 75 minute set. Hendrix was ON this night delivering perhaps his finest live performance. His playing was focused and precise. In fact, for most of the set, Hendrix stood motionless, a far cry from the stage antics that helped establish his reputation as a performer. Equipment problems had plagued him in past live shows as well, but everything was perfect for the Fillmore shows. His absolute mastery of his guitar and effects is even more amazing considering that this was the first time he used the Fuzz Face, wah-wah pedal, Univibe, AND Octavia pedals on stage together. The guitar tones he gets on "Who Knows" and "Power to Love" are powerful and intense, but nowhere is his absolute control more evident than on "Machine Gun," where Hendrix conjures bombs, guns, and other sounds of war from his guitar, all within the context of a coherent musical statement. The solo on "Machine Gun" totally rewrote the book on what a man could do with an electric guitar and is arguably the most groundbreaking and devastating guitar solo ever. At midnight, when the strains of the Guy Lombardo Orchestra's "Auld Lang Syne" filled the theatre, the Band of Gypsys appeared back on stage, Jimi launching into his own arrangement of the traditional year-opener, a beautiful rendition that captivated the audience immediately. Now Classic Records brings back this legendary title for the first time on our Quiex 200g Super Vinyl Profile. George Marino and Eddie Kramer mastered and cut the lacquers from the original analog two track masters at Sterling Sound in New York with Michael Fremer in attendance in 1998. The legend lives on as do our memories of one of Rock's greatest performers - Jimi Hendrix.

On their major-label debut, My Chemical Romance amps up the melodies in favor of a more pop-punk style. Buried amid Gerrard Way's abundant sing-along choruses and the two-guitar attack of Ray Toro and Frank Iero is doom-and-gloom imagery that ranges from the suicidal allusions of the soaring "Cemetery Drive" to the murder and firing squads of the insistent "Give 'Em Hell Kid." Here on Limited Edition red vinyl LP.

It features the # 1 single "A Taste Of Honey", which won three Grammy Awards and the title track, which became famous as the theme song for The Dating Game. Not to mention the eye-catching cover, which defined the era as much as the music on Whipped Cream did.

2001's White Blood Cells is the third release from Detroit's self-professed brother and sister duo, The White Stripes. Recorded at the legendary Easley Studio in Memphis, TN, the album's stripped down back to basic garage sound drew critical acclaim and it is considered to be the band's commercial breakthrough. All the elements that made the subsequent Elephant such a huge success are firmly in place: the insistent, simplicity of Meg White’s drumming fused with Jack White’s intense, rhythmic, blues-based riffing; a vintage sense of pop history and of course their by now well-established red/white branding imagery. Includes the singles "Fell In Love With A Girl," "Hotel Yorba" and "Dead Leaves On The Dirty Ground."

The long awaited follow up from the irrepressible Norwegian duo sees both '80s and modern day influences intertwined to create a landmark release. Red is a thoroughly unashamed love letter from Fredrik and musical partner Ketil Mosnes' to the influences that made Datarock what they are today. DEVO, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Haruki Murakami, Don Delillo's White Noise, Scott Walker and the works of John Hughes and Peter Greenaway are all referenced. The duo does a fine balancing act here of sounding both modern and retro, and altogether funny. Highlights include the album's centerpiece and single "The Pretender" and "Amarillion" among others.

When the band performed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already fairly well known, having performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but it wasn't until Cream that Clapton became a global superstar. Breaking free of the traditional rock and roll song structure for a more improvisational/jazz influenced take, the band's long jams gave birth to a whole new approach to rock music. Don't miss your chance to get these amazing collector's editions of three of the four official Cream studio albums in one vinyl box set. The set includes Fresh Cream on clear red vinyl, Wheels of Fire (studio) on white vinyl and Wheels of Fire (Live) on white vinyl and Goodbye on picture disc

Embryonic is The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album and first double LP. According to ringleader Wayne Coyne, Embryonic was conceived as a double album as a means of forcing the band to become more free and uninhibited. “I believe I was stuck thinking of us as being a group of reckless, sloppy freaks,” he explains “and that, if we weren’t constantly trying to be more disciplined or more refined or more together, maybe our creative luck would elude us.” As the title suggests, Embryonic has an air of being a work in progress rather than a completed action and it makes for some very exciting and liberating music from one of music's most enigmatic performers.
"It sounds like John Lennon but if he got together with Miles Davis and they went back in time, but there was a supercomputer that they could figure out how to work." - Wayne Coyne/NME on Embryonic

Produced by Brian Eno, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! was a seminal touchstone in the development of American new wave. It was one of the first pop albums to use synthesizers as an important textural element, an innovation that began to lay the groundwork for the synth-pop explosion that would follow very shortly. Q: Are We Not Men also revived the absurdist social satire of the Mothers of Invention, claiming punk rock's outsider alienation as a home for freaks and geeks. While Devo's appeal was certainly broader, their sound was tailored well enough to that sensibility that it still resonates with a rabid cult following. The album features some of Devo's most memorable work with "Uncontrollable Urge," the incredible cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Mongoloid" and "Jocko Homo."
Warner Bros. Records released six of Devo's classic albums between the years of 1978 and 1984. To mark the band's new deal, the label will reissue limited-edition colored vinyl versions of Devo's 1978's gold debut Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! and 1980's platinum favorite Freedom of Choice, as well as a seven-inch vinyl single of "Jocko Homo/Mongoloid."
The day the reissues are released, Devo will launch a series of very special live performances in select markets (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City, and Toronto), during which they will play back-to-back nights in each city. One the first night, the band will perform Are We Not Men? in its entirety; on the second night, they will perform Freedom of Choice in its entirety. As a bonus, fans who purchase tickets online to any one of these concerts will receive three demos recently uncovered in the Devo vaults. The three previously unreleased versions, "Whip It," "Red Shark" (later re-titled "It's Not Right" and recorded with different lyrics), and "Turn Around," were all recorded on a four-track in the band's rehearsal space at Modern Music in Hollywood, CA.

White Vinyl LP - Sealed
A reissue of the first full-length album by one of the most well-loved and influential bands of the past 25years. Following in the grand tradition of other great Southwestern psych bands like 13th Floor Elevators and The Red Krayola, The Flaming Lips first act mixed punk, country & western, psychedelia, goth and pure bar-band rock and roll into their own curious creation on classics such as "Jesus Shootin' Heroin," "Trains, Brains, & Rain" and "Charlie Manson Blues." Sharing the weird, slanted pop sensibility of contemporaries like Meat Puppets and Butthole Surfers, this early masterpiece continues to influence bands to this day. Deluxe reissue on white vinyl.

The final pre-major label album from The Flaming Lips brought a huge shift in sound that would define their work over the greater part of the next decade. The first album to feature Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue on guitar, In A Priest Driven Ambulance features more structured songwriting and tighter production. The lyrical wit and insight of Wayne Coyne had never been better as his obsession with religious imagery moved to the forefront. Deluxe reissue on pink vinyl.
Experimental, even by The Flaming Lips standards, the band's third album is a glorious and mind-expanding mix of heavily effected guitar solos, backwards recordings and surrealistic imagery. Again, the classic song titles keep coming with "Chrome Plated Suicide," "Hari-Krishna Stomp Wagon (Fuck Led Zeppelin)" and "Drug Machine in Heaven." Telepathic Surgery became a big influence on many bands such as Mercury Rev, Beck, Granddaddy and The Olivia Tremor Control. Deluxe reissue on blue vinyl.

A Short Break Robert Wyatt $24.99
Colored Vinyl 10" LP - Sealed
As the original drummer for Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt played a fundamental role in bringing the sixties British psychedelic scene in a more interesting and experimental direction. A man with a strong character Wyatt soon left Soft Machine to form his own band, Matching Mole (a pun on machine molle, French for “soft machine”), but a fall from a third story window in the early seventies leaving him paralyzed from the waist down, effectively ending his drumming career. This did not stop Wyatt, however, who continued recording as a solo artist. A Short Break, an EP originally released in 1996 features Wyatt on piano, percussion, organ and vocals. The songs are intimate and melancholy. A glimpse into Wyatt’s private and complex world of ideas and music. Clear green vinyl.

Psychopathy Slayer $9.99
Red Colored Vinyl LP 7" - Sealed
The first new music since 2006's ferocious Christ Illusion, 'Psychopathy Red' is a blast of proper thrash metal by the band that invented it. The track is inspired by the truly heinous Russian serial murderer, Andrei Chikatilo, and if this is any indication of where Slayer's heading with their new album (Summer 2009) then, once again, no one is safe.
A special Russian 'evidence envelope' contains the blood-red vinyl slab in all its glory. This Record Store Day exclusive is Slayer's way of recognizing the importance of independent records stores as the longtime home and supporter of metal music.

1. Psychopathy Red
