In 1958, after a string of critically acclaimed and successful albums, Miles Davis was searching for a new direction to take the music, and signs were pointing him off the chordal highway into a new jazz style: modal. His innovations would open up the world for improvisers. He recruited key players with the potential to solidify his new approach, forming his famed sextet with rising jazz giants John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans & Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Miles hired the little-known Evans because he needed a pianist who was into the modal thing. Davis and Evans both had developed personal voices characterized by a melodic flow that suggested, rather than defined, musical structure. It was his relationship with Evans that created the spark that resulted in the album Kind of Blue.

In only two impromptu sessions in March and April of 1959, Miles Daviss sextet created a tour de force 5 original tunes built on simple scales. Davis is committed to getting something spontaneous out of his musicians. The entire album was composed as a series of modal sketches and was conceived only hours before the recording dates. The outcome? Pure inspiration, and the stuff of legend an album made up of the first full take of each tune, captured at the historic Columbia 30th Street Studio. The album was originally released on Columbia Records in 1959, stunning the jazz world by practically creating a new language of music. Its influence goes far beyond jazz. Kind of Blue is universally considered to be one of the best albums of all time, of any genre. Fifty years later, Kind of Blue the epitome of spontaneous inventionis still the best selling jazz album ever.

Christmas On Mars is a fantastical and disturbing film freakout. You didn't actually expect anything less from The Flaming Lips did you? This is where it all began for these acid casualty reality trippers. Brown Reason To Live is their very first release; it came out in 1983. Here it is on vintage thick wax. 12" vinyl, 7-song ep- their first classic slab o' wax, and still as crazed and lysergic as ever! P.S.- And the answer to the timeless question, "what speed is this meant to be played on?" It's meant to be played at 69 rpm, of course! (But if your turntable doesn't have a "69" setting, try it on 45 instead.) "'I am the ultimate god!' followed by the sounds of a man nearly breaking down in tears- it's one of the most emotional and honest moments in rock history. Oddly enough it's at the end of a song called 'The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave' off of the superb Butthole Surfers debut EP 'Brown Reason To Live.' It's that accidental shift from extreme bravado to mournful regret that most bands only dream of pulling off, and it's all courtesy of some of America's most drug-addled pranksters. The following 6 tracks put experimental punk on the map. No one was quite sure what to make of it. Was it psychedelia, was it punk rock, or was it just crap? But everyone was certain that it was nothing like anything else. Insane, but not cheesy, lyrics that sounded passionate while the music sometimes grooved, rocked, irritated, or just became noise... this sounds brilliant. Duty Now for the Future, Devo's second album captures the group in the midst of a significant stylistic shift. The world's most predictably unpredictable band, The Flaming Lips, have teamed up with their Oklahoma City brethren, Stardeath and White Dwarfs to record their own unique take of Pink Floyd's 1973 classic album The Dark Side Of The Moon, under the title of The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches.

The collaborative project was recorded after several weeks of both bands touring the world together and mutually citing Pink Floyd as one of their favorite bands of all time and The Dark Side Of the Moon as one of their primary influences.

Black Earth is the first album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy. The album was reissued on April 24, 2007 on Regain Records, featuring Losing Faith, two Iron Maiden covers and the video for Bury Me an Angel. During the time of recording Black Earth, Arch Enemy was more of a solo project. Michael Amott wrote all of the songs and played bass guitar on the album. Although Johan Liiva is cited as playing the bass, Michael later stated in an interview that he had it credited that way to make it seem more of a band effort. Christopher Amott, who was attending music college at the time, only contributed his leads on the album, leaving Michael to record all the rhythm tracks.

Gate Fold Blue Vinyl Reissue of Witchfinder Generals second album. Witchfinder General are a doom metal band from Stourbridge, England. They were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene and have been cited as a major influence on the doom metal genre. Death Penalty is the debut album by NWOBHM band Witchfinder General. It was released in 1982 on Heavy Metal Records. The album received some criticism for the cover photograph, which featured topless model Joanne Latham. The photograph had been taken in the yard of St Mary the Blessed Virgin Church in Enville, Staffordshire, without the permission of the local Reverend. The album was originally released on LP and picture disc and was later reissued on CD. Pictured on the cover is Phil Cope, Zeeb Parkes, Graham Ditchfield and a member of the then Road Crew. While Peter Hinton is credited with producing this recording the writers Phil Cope and Zeeb Parkes always felt the credit should have gone to the engineer Robin George.

Founded 1988 in Stockholm/Sweden, Dismember were among those responsible for Death Metal’s big break through. The debut album, “Like An Ever Flowing Stream” from 1991, clearly showed that Dismember are an uncompromising band which resulted in their rise to cult status within a short period of time after the album took the scene by storm. Extensive touring with bands like Death, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse showed that Dismember are a live force to be reckoned with and the number of fans grew steadily. Spurred on by success, it was easy to commence the songwriting for the next album. However, the band then released the 5-track EP, "Pieces", and went out on tour again instead with Napalm Death and Obituary. They played for thousands of fans throughout Europe thus reinforcing their status as one of the best live bands on earth.

The album was recorded live over several German and Japanese dates in late 1976 during the Rising world tour. Many of the tracks were spliced together from different dates by producer Martin Birch, and the running order was changed to more easily fit four sides of vinyl. The recording features the customary introduction to a Rainbow show - the classic quote from the The Wizard of Oz, "Toto: I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the rainbow!" with the last word repeated as an echo, then the actual band plays a musical phrase from the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow before breaking into Kill the King.

Black Diamond Heavies is a self-described punk-ass blues duo from the South consisting of John Wesley Myers on bass keys, fender Rhodes, organ, and lead vocals and Van Campbell on drums, percussion and vocals. "A Touch Of Someone Else's Class" is the follow up to their acclaimed 2007's debut "Every Damn Time" (Alive), and it's a another slab of grungy, dirty, blues punk rock'n'roll with a heavy, greasy, touch of soul. This time the two-piece traveled to Akron, Ohio, to team up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and record in his newly built studio, equipped with vintage gear. The result is everything one would expect, and more. The "blues groove monsters" deliver another blues/soul/rock masterpiece of gothic proportions. Worth mentioning is a guest appearance by Ralph Carney on horns, best known for his long-time association with Tom Waits. "With a sound that's blues-rooted but steeped in Stooges sludge, the Heavies' cranky, cranked-up sets burn black as tire fires. Stylistically, BDH is often lumped in with R.L. Burnside and Tom Waits. That's a fine place to start, but the comparison misses the band's joy and boogie. Instead, think Exile on Main Street recorded in Howlin' Wolf's casket. Nothing smooth or clean here. Members prefer to go by aliases and stay away from normal press photos so the music is always the main focus. Led by Tobacco (Vox), who does most of the writing and production, the band also consists of Ryan Graveface (bass and guitar), The Seven Fields of Aphelion (monosynth) and Iffernaut (drums). Not really coming from any kind of scene, Black Moth Super Rainbow is somewhat of an anomaly in their hometown of Pittsburgh; a place where most people don't even realize BMSR is from. By developing their ideas in near-seclusion and without any local influence, they come across as something feral and without solid comparison.

Dandelion Gum is a loosely based concept record about witches who make candy in the forest. Each of its songs represent a different candy-induced freakout in the gooiest and sweetest ways possible. Songs that are built to stick in your head for hours meet textures that are impossible to scrape off your teeth. You might not even realize that the sunny melody you're humming to yourself all day has so many hidden layers behind it. It's as accessible of a record as it is abstract, and as bright on the surface as it is moody underneath. Dandelion Gum feels as colorful and sticky as its name suggests.

But theres more to this deluxe reissue than the original Dandelion Gum tracks. Graveface Records has added 14 songs that were all recorded during the same time period. Japan, whose members were David Sylvian, guitarist Rob Dean, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, bassist Mick Karn and Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen as a drummer, began as a group of friends, who all studied at the same school and became an alternative glam rock outfit in the mould of David Bowie, T.Rex, and The New York Dolls.
In 1977, the German label Hansa held a contest that elicited entries from over 1000 bands.
The eight winners, including Japan (and an unknown group called the Easy Cure who later became the Cure) received recording contracts and, a year later their debut 'Adolescent Sex' hit the shops.

'Quiet Life' is Japan's third album, originally released in 1980. Musically, the album was a huge change of style for the band since it stepped away from their earlier alternative Glamrock and into New Wave.

Following the breakup of the Experience, Jimi Hendrix took a sabbatical in Woodstock, New York, hooked up with bassist Billy Cox and began jamming with a wide variety of musicians, including R&B drummer Buddy Miles. He had become self-conscious about his image as a showman and rocker and about the limitations of thrashing through the same repertoire night after night. Band Of Gypsys was Hendrix's attempt to redefine himself, and in a way heralded his return to the ethos of the blues and R&B, a return assisted by a powerhouse, groove-oriented rhythm section. Band Of Gypsys was certainly different from Hendrix's work with the Experience, but rivals it in terms of scope, vision and beauty.
