With over 25 years of touring and recording Venom returns with Hell, the follow up to their 2006 album Black Metal. If success was measured by influence wielded on those that follow, then Venom would be one of the biggest acts in the world. Lauded as inventors of thrash, speed and power metal, the band even created a new genre of metal, death metal and were major influences on the likes of Metallica and Slayer. The nature of Venom’s high-pitch guitars, harsh vocals, use of pseudonyms and unrelenting emphasis on satanic lyrics and imagery is considered the template for the subgenre’s later successes, and arguably for the broader extreme metal movement in general.
Venom formed in late 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Coming to prominence towards the end of the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal,' Venom are widely regarded as highly influential, particularly for their first two albums, Welcome To Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982). The title of Venom’s second album would become influential and definitive enough to describe an entire subgenre called black metal, a category under which the band is most commonly referred.

After participating in classic releases with both Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Black Sabbath n the late '70s and early '80s, it seemed that singer Ronnie James Dio could do no wrong. And with the release of his self-titled debut album, Holy Diver, in 1983, Dio struck gold once again by injecting catchy melodies into the classic metal riffery of his previous groups. Besides Dio's inspired songwriting, the album's consistency owes a lot to his carefully chosen bandmates, including veteran bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Vinny Appice and young guitarist Vivian Campbell. The album opens in full-tilt metal mode with the frenetic "Stand Up and Shout," which segues into the epic title track, an album highlight thanks to it's hypnotic, mid-paced riff. Dio himself plays keyboards on the hit single "Rainbow in the Dark," and the remaining cuts range from further stabs at pop-metal ("Gypsy," "Caught in the Middle") to metal anthems ("Straight Through the Heart," "Invisible").

Filosofem (somber) is the fifth album from Varg Vikernes, recorded right before he was imprisoned for the murder of Mayhem's guitarist/leader Euronymous. The album expands on the synth/keyboard ideas put forth on Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, culminating in in the melancholy ode "Dunkelheit," which was sort of a breakthrough song for this one-man band. Whereas the earlier Burzum albums still tended to reference traditional black metal, by the time of this recording Varg was off on a tangent by himself, and it shows in the chilling, otherworldly and occult melodies on display here. This also marks what was probably the true beginning of his obsession with minimalistic composing. "Jesus' Tod," is an absolutely mesmerizing piece that centers around a single series of raw guitar riffs repeated until you are deeply lost inside the echoing hallways of this artist's iconoclastic genius for dark music. Many consider this recording to be his finest hour.

The Lost Tracks of Danzig is a veritable goldmine for the casual or frenetic Danzig devotee. The collection is comprised of two-dozen-plus previously unreleased tracks spanning the band's entire career that were recorded during the seven-album arc that begain with 1983's Danzig. The Lost Tracks of Danzig is all about the gems that were recorded, but never released, during the Danzig I-VII sessions. When Glenn Danzig began the project, the songs were in various stages of completion, some were still in demo form, some had no vocals, some needed a different mix, a new bass or guitar track, or some other type of tweaking. After tracking down and reviewing the original tapes, Glenn entered the studio and completed the tracks, handling the vocals and finishing all the instrumental recording himself.
The two-dozen-plus songs on The Lost Tracks of Danzig are presented in chronological order: two of the first cuts are "Pain Like An Animal" and "When Death Had No Name," both songs that have their roots in late Samhain, but evolved into two of the very first Danzig tracks that were intended for the band's self-titled debut. Fans will also find a song entitled "Angels of the Seventh Dawn," originally recorded for the 1990 album Danzig II: Lucifuge, "Crawl Across Your Killing Floor," considered for Danzig 6: Satan's Child and the controversial "White Devil Rise," which was recorded for 1994's Danzig 4p and is Glenn's conjecture as to what would happen if Louis Faracon incited the passive white race to rise up against and start a race war with the Black Islamic movement.
Danzig also liked to include cover songs on their albums, so Lost Tracks will feature T-Rex's "Buick Mackane" (1992's Danzig III: How the God's Kill), David Bowie's "Cat People" (Danzig 7) and "Caught In My Eye" by The Germs (Danzig 6). One of the collection's true treasures is a sparse acoustic version of "Come to Silver," a song that Glenn originally wrote for Johnny Cash (who reportedly loved it), then recorded it with Jerry Cantrell for 1996's Danzig 5: Blackacidevil.
The Lost Tracks of Danzig also contains a special 10-page booklet with a forward personally written by Glenn Danzig, anecdotes for each track and plenty of vintage photos. Available here on Limited Edition Colored Vinyl!

With their second full length album and third overall, Slayer upped the ante in every way possible. Breakneck tempos, gruesome lyrics and proper production gave the band a progressive and distinct sound that was becoming all their own. Hell Awaits is where the band began to sound truly sinister and evil and Dave Lombardo's famous double bass drumming brilliantly propells the lightspeed riffing and twisted solos of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman here. Bassist Tom Araya's dark and demonic lyrics touched on everything from the mind of a serial killer in "Kill Again" to vampires on "At Dawn They Sleep" and the unhinged lust of "Necrophiliac." Hell Awaits stands as one of best black and thrash metal documents of the '80s and its influence is vast and undeniable. Availabe here on Limited Edition Splatterd Gold Colored Vinyl!

Grow-housing the traditional 'heavy' sounds cultivated by heroes of the ?90s Floridian death metal scene, Richmond, Virginia?s Cannabis Corpse brings that same sickening metal crunch back in an overt homage to Cannibal Corpse and the sacred green plant that?s fueled nearly 20 years of deviant metallic riffage and skull-smashing drumming. Their sophomore release, Tube of the Resinated, collects evil shredding and devilish melodies of ghoulish hunger, balanced out with steamrolling death metal grooves and set to an old-school battery of blasts and kick-work. Spidery bass lines and growling vocals relate ironic weed-laced tales of gore and murder (with a bit of heavy-handed humor), creating a reality that includes the existence of bloodthirsty bud monsters and mysterious death-dealing weed-cults.

Overcome All That Remains $14.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
Produced by Jason Suecof (Trivium, Sevendust, Chimaira), All That Remains' fourth album Overcome finds the Massachusetts quintet continuing to refine the trademark mixture of musical excellence, captivating melodies and aggressive, yet memorable riffs that has earned the act international acclaim. Mastered by Ryan Smith (Lamb of God, Mudvayne) at New York's legendary Sterling Sound, Overcome sees All That Remains firing on all cylinders, from the blistering "Relinquish" and "Before The Damned," to the defiant mission statement "Do Not Obey," to self-empowerment anthem "Chiron," to the poignant (though still musically powerful) "Two Weeks" and "Forever In Your Hands." Additionally, the album acknowledges the band's metal roots through ATR's first-ever cover song, a stirring rendition of the power ballad "Believe In Nothing" by underground metal legends Nevermore. It's clear that Overcome is the culmination of the original ideals, ideas and elements upon which All That Remains was initially founded. Blending sharp riffs, unrelenting rhythms, virtuosic soloing and memorable melodies with Labonte's strongest and most diverse vocal performance yet, the album displays the band's strong desire to continually evolve their trademark sound.

Once again proving its indestructible, eternal appeal, metal is in yet another renaissance, be it the aggressive marriage of rap and metal or the expansive sound scapes of "stoner rock". From the nightmarish theatrics and irresistible hooks of the nine-member band Slipknot to the buzzsaw aggression of Korn to the anarchic party vibe of Limp Bizkit, metal continues to change with the times, picking up seemingly disparate styles and making them new again. Guitar World has never failed to offer the best coverage of this enduring explosive scene, and the pieces collected here are a must for any metal fan.
After 8 menacing albums, the kings of black metal return with their most dastardly tale yet. Chronicling the story of the world's first serial killer, French nobleman and soldier of Joan of Arc, Gilles De Rais. Like they had done with the story of Elizabeth Bathory, Cradle of Filth weave a tale of murder, the occult, and sinister deed around their trademark metal sound. Fueled by breakneck speed, crushing guitars, and haunting vocals- the band has delivered their hardest most aggressive and chilling piece yet.

With catchy songs, a brutal delivery, and a great gimmick, this is as good as underground metal gets. Cradle Of Filth really helped the black metal genre to reappear after the death metal craze of the early '90s and Dusk and Her Embrace is arguably their finest moment. The tracks "Heaven Torn Asunder" and "Malice Through the Looking Glass" are some of the most important black metal songs ever made.
Track Listing:
1. Humana Inspired to Nightmare
2. Heaven Torn Asunder
3. Funeral in Carpathia
4. A Gothic Romance (Red Roses for the Devil's Whore)
5. Malice Through the Looking Glass
6. Dusk and Her Embrace
7. The Graveyard by Moonlight
8. Beauty Slept in Sodom
9. Haunted Shores
Cradle of Filth are a black metal ensemble from Suffolk, England, who've managed to keep it extreme, while being wildly popular internationally. They never veer drastically from the usual black metal staples: movie monster-type vocals, lots of high-pitched screams, indecipherable lyrics and relentless, punishing riffs. But Midian has its fair share of melody too. The album begins with a chorus of what sounds like some evil monks chanting and is at its very best when the ominous, classical-style keyboards kick in.
Track Listing:
1. At the Gates of Midian
2. Cthulhu Dawn
3. Saffron's Curse
4. Death Magick for Adepts
5. Lord Abortion
6. Amor E Morte
7. Creatures That Kissed in Cold Mirrors
8. Her Ghost in the Fog
9. Satanic Mantra
10. Tearing the Veil from Grace

Age Of Nero Satyricon $18.99
High-Definition Vinyl LP - Sealed
Release Date: January 2009
Largely written in a remote cabin deep in the Norwegian woods by Satyr in collaboration with his old friend Snorre Ruch (of Thornsl), Age Of Nero features eight of the heaviest songs in Satyricon's history. From the unstoppable urgency that marks "Black Crow On A Tombstone" to the epic frenzy of "Die By My Hand" and the bleak nihilism of "Den Siste," each title demands the utmost sonic intensity. This is metal music in its most mature form, not as simple escapism or a form of anger management, but as a profound experience of what it's like to live in an increasingly dark age.

3. Black Crow on a Tombstone
4. Die by My Hand
