Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to Fight Fire with Fire fool you, Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. This early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view; nuclear war on Fight Fire with Fire, electric-chair execution on Ride the Lightning and drowning on Trapped Under Ice. Interestingly enough, the best track on this album is probably Fade to Black, a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There's also Creeping Death, which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended.

Venom formed in late 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Coming to prominence towards the end of the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal,' Venom are widely regarded as highly influential, particularly for their first two albums, Welcome To Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982). Released on May 25, 1983, the album has been hailed by critics as Dio's best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre. The album was eventually certified Gold in the US on September 12, 1984 and Platinum on March 21, 1989. Filosofem (somber) is the fifth album from Varg Vikernes, recorded right before he was imprisoned for the murder of Mayhem's guitarist/leader Euronymous. The album expands on the synth/keyboard ideas put forth on Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, culminating in in the melancholy ode Dunkelheit, which was sort of a breakthrough song for this one-man band. Whereas the earlier Burzum albums still tended to reference traditional black metal, by the time of this recording Varg was off on a tangent by himself, and it shows in the chilling, otherworldly and occult melodies on display here. This also marks what was probably the true beginning of his obsession with minimalistic composing. Jesus' Tod, is an absolutely mesmerizing piece that centers around a single series of raw guitar riffs repeated until you are deeply lost inside the echoing hallways of this artist's iconoclastic genius for dark music. Many consider this recording to be his finest hour.

Witchfinder General are a doom metal band from Stourbridge, England. They were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene and have been cited as a major influence on the doom metal genre. Death Penalty is the debut album by NWOBHM band Witchfinder General. It was released in 1982 on Heavy Metal Records. The album received some criticism for the cover photograph, which featured topless model Joanne Latham. The photograph had been taken in the yard of St Mary the Blessed Virgin Church in Enville, Staffordshire, without the permission of the local Reverend. The album was originally released on LP and picture disc and was later reissued on CD. Pictured on the cover is Phil Cope, Zeeb Parkes, Graham Ditchfield and a member of the then Road Crew. While Peter Hinton is credited with producing this recording the writers Phil Cope and Zeeb Parkes always felt the credit should have gone to the engineer Robin George.

Before Acid Bath dismantled in 1997 they created their second and final full-length album Paegan Terrorism Tactics which futher established the band's unique Southern hybrid of metal with a more melodic songwriting approach. The songs are stylistically all over the map, but bound together in part by frontman Dax Riggs' powerful singing and dark lyrics. Remastered on vinyl for the first time!

They released their second album “Witch Hunter” in 1985. After this album was completed, Eckardt left the band; he was replaced by C.F. Brank. Further festival appearances, a tour as the supporting act for Helloween, and a triple headlining tour with Celtic Frost and Helloween, followed before the release of the third album “War Games” in January 1986. Thereafter, Peter Masson gave way to Uwe Lulis; in 1987 the band's name was changed to Digger, the name under which they released the album “Stronger than Ever”.

This album hardly had anything in common with the earlier music of Grave Digger. It was more an attempt to reach the masses with mainstream rock like that of Bon Jovi or Van Halen. The album flopped, as it was not readily accepted by fans nor the mainstream. As a result, Chris Boltendahl declared the break up of the band at the end of 1987.

However, the band partially reformed in 1991. Chris Boltendahl and Uwe Lulis, along with two newcomers, Tomi Göttlich and Jörg Michael, who had been the drummers for Rage and Running Wild, released a comeback record, “The Reaper”. The title song returned to the true roots of Grave Digger. In the same year, the album “Best of the Eighties” was released and comprised a quasi Best-of-Album of their earlier songs.

The album “Symphony of Death” followed in 1994. In the meantime, Grave Digger, now with a new drummer, Frank Ullrich, toured Germany, playing as the supporting act for Manowar. In 1995, the album “Heart of Darkness” was released—a very dark album influenced by the early works of Annihilator.

This German black metal/thrash trio was formed in 1983 by Tom Angelripper (bass, vocals), Aggressor (vocals, guitar) and Chris Witchhunter (drums), drawing inspiration from bands such as Motrhead, Anvil and Venom. Aggressor was replaced by the similarly pseudonymous Grave Violator on the agenda-setting debut EP, In The Sign Of Evil. By the time Obsessed By Cruelty emerged in 1986, Grave Violator had been replaced by Destructor. The latter was in turn replaced by Frank `Blackfire` Gosdzik on 1987`s Expurse Of Sodomy EP. Persecution Mania followed in the same year and marked a vast improvement over their debut, though lyrics had not moved on from obsessions with war, bloodlust and the black arts. Produced by Harris Johns, it had a crisp and powerful sound and was to become the band`s bestselling release.

Sodom toured Europe in 1988 with Whiplash and recorded Mortal Way Of Live, the first ever double live thrash album. Agent Orange followed in 1989 and they were supported by Sepultura on a European tour to help promote it. Michael Hoffman was recruited as the new guitarist when Blackfire left for Kreator in 1990, but was in turn replaced by Andy Brings on 1992`s Tapping The Vein. Following the release of this album long-time drummer Witchhunter was replaced by Atomic Steif. Further personnel changes included yet another guitar players, Strahli, on 1995`s Masquerade In Blood. The band`s first album for the Gun label, 1997`s `Til Death Do Us Unite, saw Angelripper joined by Bernemann (guitar) and Bobby Schottkowski (drums). The band continued to release a steady flow of albums during the late 90s and into the new millennium.

Fallen is the 9th studio album from Burzum, and follows the highly critically acclaimed 2010 release Belus which put Burzum straight back at the top of the chain as one of the most innovative and creative metal artists of our time. Fallen follows Belus in sound and structure, and can also be compared to the music on the groundbreaking DET SOM ENGANG VAR. Fallen is more dynamic and hard hitting then Belus and has an even bigger sound, but still carries the same trademark melody lines throughout that make Burzum sound so iconic and unique. Burzum says of the new album and his style of music: "Musically FALLEN is like a cross between BELUS and something new, inspired more by the debut album DET SOM ENGANG VAR than by HVIS LYSET TAR OSS or FILOSOFEM. The sound is more dynamic we mastered the album as if it was classical music and I was more experimental than I was on BELUS in all respects. Lyric-wise it is similar to the debut album, in the way that it is more personal and focuses on existential issues, but the mythological undertone known from BELUS is still there. I have also included some ambient tracks - a short introduction and a longer conclusion."

Brilliant and innovative, Fire Down Under is the third album by Riot, one of the hardest metal albums produced by an American band in the early '80s before it went big hair or thrash. The 1981 release finds the band at the peak of their melodic, riff-heavy and hard rockin' power. Every song is like a greatest hit with soaring guitars and great vocals. The combination of Mark Reale's Les Paul with Rick Ventura's bright-sounding Strat makes terrific use of the difference in sound between the two instruments. Pure early 1980's raunch, just nasty sounding stuff, gloriously thick, tight and exciting.

Guy Speranza's vocals are absolutely amazing, full of soul and demotion, a great vehicle for his vocal pyrotechnics. Standout tracks include the driving opening song "Swords and Tequila," the breakneck, breathless riff of the title track, the brilliant "Outlaw," one of the best hard rock songs ever written, the catchy, melodic relief of "Feel the Same" and the mighty "Altar of the King." Fire Down Under is one of the most revered metal albums ever made and a true classic for the ages!

If noise music, the genre to which Prurient has most often been assigned, is about confrontation, exploration, and defying expectations, this release measures up on all counts. Yet, much of what made past work identifiable as noise music harsh textures, screams washed in seas of static, clanging unidentified percussion is now gone. Those elements which formerly provided a valuable counterpoint to the harsh din of Prurient's core sound buried melodies, passages of relative serenity, and occasional spoken word bits have come to the fore. A sense of naked clarity and uncomfortable intimacy now brings the listener closer to the world as described the music, rather than pushing away the would-be voyeuristic observer. This is best illustrated on the title track of the EP, "Times Arrow," where a glistening synth melody lays atop an undeniably dancey beat, over which a fragmented, but clearly discernable narrative is intoned - sinister in character to be sure, but also clearly without any element that could be described as overtly aggressive.

I would say that this album is the result of pure anger (note: I destroyed 3 microphones during the production). Following our experiences with I'm A Rebel, we made it our goal not to be influenced musically by anyone outside of the band this time. One example are the lyrics of Son of a Bitch that are absolutely anti record company. With this album you can say that the Accept sound was born and brought us attention across Europe and a tour with Judas Priest.
