Jutta Hipp, a talented German pianist, came to the United States in the
mid-'50s and quickly gained some attention. Hipp's boppish music on the set
is very enjoyable and swinging. Oddly enough, soon after this now impossible
LP to find, she left the jazz world. Teamed up with great tenor Zoot Sims
(who dominates the music), somewhat hesitant trumpeter Jerry Lloyd (who
briefly came out of retirement), bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and drummer Ed
Thigpen, Hipp sounds excellent on a couple of basic originals and such
standards as "Violets for Your Furs," "Almost Like Being in Love," and J.J.
Johnson's "Wee Dot." This rare set is well worth picking up by
straight-ahead jazz collectors. The Classic reissue was cut from the
original full track mono master on our vintage "all tube" mono cutting
system by Bernie "Bebop" Grundman.

The year 1956 documents a new, great chapter in the history of jazz music: Norman Granz founds his third label, VERVE, manages to win Ella Fitzgerald (who has deserted DECCA) and initiates the Songbook Series which not only attracts a totally new listening public, but also establishes Ella’s reputation as the “First Lady of Song”. The Cole Porter Songbook marks the glorious beginning of a series which finally expanded to seven titles. The recording’s success was practically a foregone conclusion. Porter had written hundreds of wonderful songs from which Granz made an initial choice of 50 songs before Ella and the bandleader and arranger Buddy Bregman finally decided upon what was, for them, the crème de la crème. The result was a list of 32 songs, all of which make easy listening not only thanks to their melodic originality and harmonic genius but particularly to the wonderful amalgamation of the text – which Porter always wrote himself – and the music.
Each and every one is a classic in its own right. Bregman’s arrangements never seek to disguise the fact that all these songs originated on Broadway, and Ella proves her greatness by finding something new in such old favourites as Night and Day, I Love Paris and I Get A Kick Out Of You. And as if that wasn’t enough, Bregman’s orchestra sounds absolutely splendid. What a pity, many will say, that all 50 songs weren’t recorded.

As youngsters back in Indianapolis, the three Montgomerys learned to play together. Monk and Buddy, the oldest and youngest, left home first to gain 1950s fame as the core of “The Mastersounds”; a few years later, when Wes was beginning to set the jazz world on its ear, they were again able to work as a unit. It was not a very successful venture, commercially speaking, but their few recordings give off a most noticeable sense of the pride and pleasure these brothers felt in being reunited.

The irony of this Album title is hard to miss. Holly Cole's confident, smoky alto might convey dark humor or cautious optimism, painful regret or self-aware neurosis, but definitely not helplessness. Ms. Cole combines the modern, post-feminist attitude of the Lilith Fair crowd with the sophistication of a pre-rock interpretative singer.
Holly Cole has always been difficult to categorize. Jazz purists have never been taken with Ms. Cole's eagerness to embrace contemporary music forms or her tendency to subvert material from the standard repertoire. Unlike Cassandra Wilson, who transposes rock and pop material into her own unique form of acoustic jazz, Ms. Cole frequently crosses the line that separates jazz and pop. In that respect, Ms. Cole's artistic sensibility is surprisingly close to that of Peggy Lee's. Although their styles and voices are very different, Ms. Cole shares Ms. Lee's affinity for creating deeply personal interpretations out of a wide range of pop material. And like Ms. Lee, Ms. Cole uses jazz as simply one of many interpretive devices for every performance.
Romantically Helpless, the Canadian singer's sixth full-length studio album, brings together the different facets of Ms. Cole's music. Two thirds of the recording mark a return to her early, more jazz-oriented roots. Ms. Cole's highly idiosyncratic interpretations, often set to a stark, minimalist accompaniment, tend to bring out the dark undercurrents of a lyric. She gives envy an edge in a slinky version of Paul Simon's 'One Trick Pony' and transforms 'Dedicated to the One I Love' into a stalker's love song. Ms. Cole extracts bitterness and hurt from Randy Newman's 'Ghosts' and 'The Same Girl' rather than the detached sarcasm usually associated with that composer's songs. In contrast, her respectful, straightforward reading of Stephen Sondheim's 'Loving You' seems oddly stilted and unexpressive.
The three decidedly more upbeat standards offer a welcome respite from the album's melancholy tone. The brassy swing arrangement of 'That Old Black Magic' does not suit Ms. Cole. She is simply not that kind of jazz singer. She is far more appealing on 'Come Fly With Me' where she relaxes the tempo giving this usually hard driving song a feeling of affectionate romanticism. Ms. Cole also has a grand time on a version of 'Don't Fence Me In' that isn't really any more tongue-in-cheek than Bing Crosby's original recording of the song.
The remainder of the album features radio-friendly pop arrangements of songs by both of Ms. Cole's long time collaborators, Aaron Davis and David Piltch. As far as pop music goes, most of these tracks are fine with 'Make It Go Away' the standout.

Alfred Lion considered this his favorite production and well he should have. With the perfect rhythm section of Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins, this tenor giant reinvents standards like "Three O'clock In The Morning," "Second Balcony Jump" and "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" and introduces his most famous composition, "Cheese Cake."

Maiden Voyage is arguably the best in Herbie Hancock's series of fine Blue Note albums from the 60s. Every single cut on this album from the haunting "Maiden Voyage" to the gentle, swinging "Dolphin Dance" has found its way into the standard jazz repertoire. Soul Station, a quartet gem from 1960, is unusual in that Hank Mobley is the only horn, heading a group also including pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Blakey; needless to say, a stellar rhythm section! This album features Hank Mobley at the peak of his powers, taking lengthy solos full of passion and drive. His four originals include his most famous composition, "This I Dig Of You,” which he squeezes for every ounce of its expressive power. The Sidewinder is a jazz classic if there ever was one and it also happens to be Lee Morgan's best-selling album! Sure, you've probably heard "The Sidewinder" enough that you think you know the album already, but the rest of the cuts really open up past the title track groover, into a realm of lyrical, soulful playing that's simply tremendous! In fine support of Morgan on The Sidewinder is Joe Henderson on tenor, Barry Harris on piano, Bob Crenshaw on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Just thirty-one at the time of this 1964 classic, Wayne Shorter had just recorded Night Dreamer and Ju-Ju for Blue Note within the past year and was at one of his major peaks of creativity. The music on Speak No Evil, which includes such future Shorter standards as "Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum" and "Infant Eyes," is often beyond description for it combines the best elements of hard bop, post bop, free jazz and modal music plus Shorter's own individual approach. Not only does Shorter sound inspired by his own challenging pieces but so does Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock. This is not standard bebop or a predictable type of soul jazz but is actually a brand new style of music that has yet to be fully exploited. Over 40 years later, Speak No Evil still sounds fresh, new and futuristic, standing as one of the most important recordings of the mid-1960s. CD versions includes an alternative take bonus track of "Dance Cadaverous."

Song For My Father is an incredible record, the kind of album that only Blue Note could put out and one that will sound wonderful forever! Horace Silver is working here at the height of his powers; lyrical, free, yet also damn soulful, in a style that makes for some of the most evocative jazz-based grooves of all time. Carmell Jones plays some of his best trumpet ever here and Joe Henderson really drives the whole session home with some incredible tenor work. Other group members include Teddy Smith on bass and Roger Humphries on drums. Titles include the instantly famous "Song For My Father" plus "Que Pasa," "The Kicker" and "Calcutta Cutie."

Weather Report's Heavy Weather was the ideal release, a popular and artistic success and for the same reasons. Released in 1977 just as the jazz-rock movement began to run out of steam, this landmark album proved that there was plenty of creative life left in the idiom. The powerhouse supergroup comprised of Joe Zawinul, Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena delivered their only certified-Platinum release with this killer collection.
Legacy Recordings has gone to great lengths to present this classic album exactly the way it was originally intended, with all the warmth and nuance that only vinyl can offer!

The year after he formally disbanded his trio to turn his attention to vocal pop music, Nat King Cole went into the studio with guitarist John Collins, bassist Charlie Harris and drummer Bunny Shawker and recorded Penthouse Serenade, a quiet, reflective set of standards like "Somebody Loves Me" and "Laura" that he performed instrumentally at the piano. The album confirmed that, whatever success he might be having as a singer, he hadn't lost his touch on the ivories.

Miles From India Miles Davis $44.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 3 LPs Sealed
After unanimous acclaim from critics and consumers alike, the ground-breaking album, Miles From India is now available on vinyl. Miles From India is a cross-cultural celebration of the music of Miles Davis by India's foremost musicians collaborating with the legendary musicians who comprised the various Miles Davis Bands over the years. This audiophile 3 x 180g LP collector's set was specially re-mastered for vinyl and no detail is left to chance.
In a startlingly original recreation of music associated with jazz legend Miles Davis, producer-archivist Bob Belden, renowned for his Grammy Award-winning reissue work on a series of Miles Davis boxed sets for Sony/Columbia, along with co-arranger Louiz Banks (celebrated keyboardist from India), has recast familiar themes from such landmark recordings as Bitches Brew, In A Silent Way, and Kind of Blue with an East Meets West sensibility on Miles...From India. An incredibly ambitious project involving two dozen musicians from two separate continents recording in studios around the world, Miles...From India is a cross-cultural summit meeting that puts a provocative pan-global spin on such Miles classics as "All Blues," "Spanish Key," "So What," "It's About That Time" and "Jean Pierre."
Sitar and tablas, ghatam and khanjira, mridangam and Carnatic violin blend seamlessly with muted trumpet and saxophones, screaming electric guitar and grooving electric bass lines, piano, upright bass and drums on this profound fusion of Indian classical and American jazz. Recorded in Mumbai and Madras, India and New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, the music on Miles From India was performed by classical and jazz musicians from India with the addition of musicians who have recorded or performed with Miles Davis over the span of five decades.
The Miles alumni included on the sessions are saxophonists Dave Liebman (1972-74) and Gary Bartz (1970-71), guitarists Mike Stern (1981-84), Pete Cosey (1973-76)
and John McLaughlin (1969-72), bassists Ron Carter (1963-69), Michael Henderson (1970-76), Marcus Miller (1981-1984), Benny Rietveld (1987-91), keyboardists Chick Corea (1968-72), Adam Holzman (1985-87) and Robert Irving III (1980- 88), drummers Jimmy Cobb (1958-63), Leon 'Ndugu' Chancler (1971), Lenny White (1969) and Vince Wilburn (1981, 1984-1987) and tabla player Badal Roy (1972-3). The Indian contingent is represented by keyboardist Louiz Banks, drummer Gino Banks, American-born alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, sitarist Ravi Chari, Vikku Vinayakram (a charter member of Shakti) on ghatam, V. Limited Edition GAIN 2™ Ultra Analog 180g LP From Mobile Fidelity
In 1958, Frank Sinatra recorded Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely, one of five collections recorded for Capitol, consisting of saloon songs and bluesy ballads, lamenting lost love and heartache. Recorded over three days in Capitol's famous Studio A, Only the Lonely features sumptuous arrangements by Nelson Riddle who co-conducts here with Sinatra's resident concertmaster Felix Slatkin. The result is arguably his greatest ballads album.
Sinatra's tour de force versions of “What's New,” “Blues in the Night,” “Spring is Here,” “One For My Baby (and One More for The Road),” “Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry” and “Good-bye,” all became staples hereafter. Never forcing the emotion out of the lyric, 'The Chairman of the Board' let's it all flow naturally here and the result is a heartfelt affair, an ideal late-night album.

Stereophile magazine senior contributing editor and analog expert Michael Fremer presents his almost three hour long Practical Guide to Turntable Set-Up. Fremer sets up three popular turntables from Pro-Ject, Rega and VPI. Using the hands-on phono cartridge installation techniques, tips and basic principles demonstrated with close-ups and flash animation, any turntable from the popular Technics SL-1200 to the most esoteric can be set up to perfection. Also included: an interview with famed Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino, and a 20 page PDF file embedded in the disc's DVD-ROM section that includes even more detailed technical descriptions and an article on record cleaning no vinyl fan should be without. Despite the seemingly dry subject matter, the disc is entertaining. There are even some laughs as Fremer once did stand up comedy (he played legendary Max's Kansas City and even opened for bands like Television and The Jam).
