In a Silent Way Miles Davis $18.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Miles Davis' famous mid-1960s quintet, featuring saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock, was intact until just a few weeks before his new, electric ensemble recorded In a Silent Way. Legendary as a kind of line in the sand release that challenged jazz fans during the ascendance of electric, psychedelic rock, In a Silent Way hinted at the repetitive polyrhythms Davis would employ throughout the early 1970s. It also partook generously of electric piano and bass and rekindled the tonal palette that Davis had explored famously with Kind of Blue. But In a Silent Way remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient color exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Davis takes many long, breathy solos, and they glisten in a burnished blue against his new group's strange admixture of musical moods.
On In A Silent Way, Miles Davis replaced the rhythms and harmonies of bebop with a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. It resulted in one of the most daringly beautiful and enduring creations of his career.

CARMEN McRAE MISS JAZZ recounts the colorful life and countless musical accomplishments of one of the finest song stylists in jazz.
Carmen McRae is a musical legend, grouped alongside Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan as one of the great jazz singers of her time. She was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master in 1993.
David Amram has played and rambled and galloped and staggered through a remarkably broad sweep of American life, experience, and creative struggle. 'The Boston Globe' has described him as "the Renaissance man of American Music." Amram and Jack Kerouac collaborated on the first-ever jazz poetry reading in New York City in 1957 as well as the subsequent legendary film 'Pull My Daisy' in 1959, combining Amram's music with Kerouac's narration. Amram, honored as the first Composer-in-Residence of the New York Philharmonic, as composed over 100 orchestral and chamber works, written two operas, and has collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, Dustin Hoffman, Thelonious Monk, Willie Nelson, Betty Carter, Odetta, Elia Kazan, Arthur Miller, and Tito Puente.
VIBRATIONS is the story of one boy's adventures growing up on a farm in Pennsylvania, working odd jobs, misfitting in the Army, barnstorming through Europe with the famous Seventh Army Symphony, exiling in Paris, scuffling on the Lower East Side, day-laboring--often down but never out--finally beginning to emerge as a major musical force.
The voice of Jimmy Scott is one of the world's most mesmerizing instrument, transcending gender and age, vocalizing pure heartbreak. But its beauty was hard-earned, inextricably entwined with personal and professional pain and an almost operatic life story of hardship and tragedy--yet Scott's resilience and optimism have also made his life a story of triumph.
Acclaimed biographer David Ritz, with Scott's cooperation, has created a poignant portrait of a man whose voice cuts to the sadness and hope within us all. FAITH IN TIME, like a haunting melody, is unforgettable.

Buddy Collette has been a key figure in American jazz since the early 1940s. He is particularly noted as a principal participant in the Central Avenue jazz scene of Los Angeles, which rivals Harlem and New Orleans in its influence on the development of jazz. Collette worked closely with Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy and went on to join the Chico Hamilton Quintet. He has led his own bands for thirty years as well as writing, arranging and playing on film soundtracks. In this fascinating autobiography, he illuminates the world of the studio musician and charts the developing jazz and social scene on the West Coast from the 1930s, through the Watts upheavals in the 1960s, to the present. He offers moving, first-hand portraits of his friends Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, and Chico Hamilton, as well as personal accounts of Frank Sinatra, Paul Robeson, and Charlie Parker. The book concludes with a fascinating review of Collette's recent activities as a teacher and performer.
An accessible combination of serious study and exciting pop reference, THE LATIN BEAT explains each of the wildly varied Latin Musical forms--bossa nova, cumbia, merengue, tango, ranchera, rumba, son, salsa--in the context of the countries in which they arose (Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Domincan Republic, Mexico). Morales then traces each of these forms as they migrated north, and explains how they were absorbed into the American mix. He travels from the Latin ballad to the cocktail-lounge bossa nova to Latin jazz, chronicles the development of the samba in Brazil and salsa in New York, explores the connection between the mambo craze of the '40s and '50s with the Cuban craze of today, and uncovers the hidden history of Latinos in '80s and '90s rock and hip hop. THE LATIN BEAT explores where the music has come from, and celebrates all of the directions it is going.

Duke Ellington And Louis Armstrong Recorded Together For The First Time
45 RPM 4 LP Box Set
The Ellington band is superb and Louis just blows and sings to your heart's content. Transfered, for the first time, directly from the 3 track session masters. You can hear everything! If you had to take one record to a desert island with you this would be one of the top choices. Now this wonderful recording is available for the first time as a part of the CLASSIC CLARITY VINYL 45 RPM SERIES – all pressed on our Super Vinyl Profile II.
Clarity Vinyl represents the ultimate in vinyl formulations because it is comprised of over 90% percentage of the highest quality co-polymer available - a key component in vinyl pellets used for manufacturing vinyl records. Further, Clarity Vinyl has no carbon black additive, common in vinyl formulas for LP’s. Carbon Black contains trace metals that become magnetized and cause “electrical distortions” in cartridges during playback that smears the sound. By taking out the Carbon Black, Classic Records is able to dramatically reduce the “electrical distortions” and thus bring more “Clarity” to the playback process, providing a more realistic musical experience to the listener and LP enthusiast.
45 RPM records have long been recognized as providing a higher fidelity musical experience resulting purely from the cartridge being able to extract more of the nuance from the complex vertical and horizontal groove modulations in stereo LP’s. Further, Classic Records 45 RPM “single sided” pressings dramatically reduce the mechanical resonances created by the cartridge during playback by allowing these resonances to be more fully transmitted to and absorbed by the turntable platter. Classic Records Clarity Vinyl 45 rpm pressings are designed and manufactured to provide the “LOWEST DISTORTION” in every aspect of LP playback resulting in putting the listener as close to the music as possible.

Released as a second volume of recordings by Roulette Records from a 1961 summit between two jazz icons, after hearing this collaboration you'll wish they had recorded ten volumes. And with the musical talent and knowledge between them, they could have! Using Louis Armstrong's regulars plus Duke Ellington at the piano (who performs exceptionally well, comping understatedly behind the vocals), the duo romps through seven of the Duke's most famous and popular compositions. And when Satchmo decides to blow, he shapes his solos perfectly into the tasteful arrangements. With Trummy Young on trombone and Barney Bigard on clarinet plus a rhythm section of Mort Herbert on bass and Danny Barcelona on drums, these recordings are a once-in-a-lifetime dream summit meeting that thank God producer Bob Thiele was brilliantly astute enough to arrange and capture on tape. Selections include "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," "Solitude," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "I'm Beginning To See The Light," "Just Squeeze Me," "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" and "Azalea." While 1937 came to a close on the notes of the virtuoso Tea For Two, 1938 began with the first appearance of the Quintette du Hot Club de France in England, an even greater sell-out event than Duke Ellington. The London recording sessions for Decca took place a few days after that event. Django played his own compositions, some jazz hits, and accompanied solos, the sound being now improved and more mature. The British episode was short but intense, and three more titles were recorded later, in August. In-between Django also recorded three sides with Benny Carter, who had widely played around Europe beginning in 1935. Before Carter left Paris for Harlem at the end of 1938, a recording session was arranged with Django on guitar, and not surprisingly, one of the tunes, "I'm Coming Virginia," was a success. Packaged in 78 RPM style deluxe plain white cardboard sleeve with outer dust sleeve.
From December of1934 to late September of 1935, the Quintette du Hot Club de France, founded by gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stéphane Grappelli, cut nearly 20 titles for the Parisian based branch of the German Ultraphone label. During the nine months they spent under contract with Ultraphone, their repertoire included some original compositions by members of the band, as well as classic jazz gems. The selections proposed here offer a sample of Django's early genius, who showed the jazz community that the 'American way' of playing jazz was not the only one. Although the guitar and violin playing of Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti during the 1920s had planted the seeds of a so-called "chamber jazz" style, Django and Grappelli's approach was entirely new and innovative, opening a sound concept never before explored. Packaged in 78 RPM style deluxe plain white cardboard sleeve with outer dust sleeve.
The British Decca company, who had distributed the early Ultraphone sides in England, was attracted by the sudden success of the band and decided to start, in the autumn of 1935, with new recording sessions, now at the enhanced Polydor studios in Paris. Although dealing with such musicians was often quite challenging for the German Polydor technical engineers some of the results were musically remarkable, despite some low figure sales. Even during his Polydor/Decca phase Django Reinhardt recorded for other companies, including French Gramophone, and in November 1935 he met modern pianist Garnet Clark and US trumpeter Bill Coleman. With the Spanish Civil war increasing the temperature of the European political scene, the Quintette du Hot Club de France went on recording with success until the spring of 1937, commonly considered the last year of peace. 78 RPM style deluxe plain white cardboard sleeve with clear protective outer dust sleeve

One of the many alto players deemed a Charlie Parker descendant; Donaldson did indeed help carry the torch from the post-bop era but gradually infused more blues and eventually what was to become soul-jazz into his playing. This June 1957 session cut in Hackensack was a distinct departure from his previous dates for Blue Note. Pianist Herman Foster and conga-player Ray Barretto both of whom he would utilize on future recordings are joined by the tasteful drummer Dave Bailey and bassist Peck Morrison to complete the quintet. This was one of Donaldson’s last sessions to incorporate piano, choosing in the future to replace it with an organ, which fellow label-mate Jimmy Smith was making very popular. Not forsaking his bop roots altogether, Lou and crew mix it up on this set, with three originals, a mambo arrangement plus a literally perfect rendition of “There Will Never Be Another You”. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible.

Continuing the major groove that pianist Silver had established at Blue Note, this 1958 release finds trumpeter-extraordinaire Art Farmer and Clifford Jordan’s tenor sax on the front-line assault. Rounding out the five are drummer Louis Hayes and bassist Teddy Kotick. Silver penned five new exciting pieces for these sessions including The Outlaw, Melancholy Mood, Pyramid, Moon Rays and Safari while also tailoring a personal arrangement of the Arlen-Koehler standard Ill Wind. Both hornists get the chance to really stretch out in Silver’s writing. Farmer’s prowess was already well established but both Jordan’s time and recordings with Silver jump-started his career to other echelons including as leader on his own recordings for Blue Note. Mastered and cut from the original FULL TRACK mono master tapes using a full track mono tape head and ALL TUBE tape electronics and cutting system allowed Bernie "BeBop" Grundman to extract every nuance on the tapes which adds to the magic of this Rudy Van Gelder recording. This is the real deal and it is done perfectly from mastering through to the authentic laminated cover art (front only) to the "deep groove" in the center label. If you didn't know better you would think that a copy of this reissue is a perfect original that has been locked in a time capsule instead of another installment in the acclaimed Classic Records Signature Blue Note Mono LP series pressed on Classic’s 200g Super Vinyl Profile.
This classic piano trio date from May, 1958 is considered one of absolute best from Powell’s late period. Bouts of mental disease resulted in highs and lows in his final discography, but the majority of his titles cut for Blue Note in the late 1950’s stand out. Showing he still possessed what listeners and critics called ‘the bounce’, this album in particular reinforces Powell as a first-rate composer, with the debut of seven originals including the magnificent “John’s Abbey” and the title tune. Bassist Sam Jones and drummer Philly Joe Jones know how to stay out of his way and their contributions are nothing short of perfection. All three truly nail it on the remainder; “Sub City”, Dry Soul”, “Marmalade”, “Monopoly” and the Afro-Latin groove of “Buster Rides Again”. One of the more unique recordings in the Blue Note 1500 series, trombonist Bennie Green oversees a cool mix of swing, blues and mambo arrangements, including vocal contributions by the leader himself and the great Babs Gonzales. With his bone tone still rooted in the swing era, Green was starting to take notice and become influenced by the emergence of soul and rhythm and blues. Case in point; inviting Gene Ammons to sit in on tenor. Adding Billy Root as a second tenor creates a front line like no other while the legendary Sonny Clark handles the piano. Ike Isaac’s bass and the brute-drumming of Elvin Jones round out the sextet. Highlights include a forceful “We Wanna’ Cook”, plus heartbreaking takes of the ballads “That’s All” and “Lullaby Of The Doomed”. Blues Walk (MONO) Lou Donaldson $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
An alto player originally deep-rooted in bop, who by the late fifties was beginning to shed his Charlie Parker influences and take a more bluesy/soul approach. Blues Walk, from a one-day session in July of 58 has attained unanimous five-star status with the title track itself becoming one the leaders signature tunes. Surrounding himself not with the usual all-stars found on many Blue Note dates from this period, Donaldson carefully chose his cohorts personally for their cohesiveness as a unit. Never one to engage frequently in wide-open blowing sessions, the results are powerful yet melodic and in one case, Autumn Nocturne, fairly romantic without causing full-blown diabetes. Pianist Herman Fosters intense pianistics almost steal the show while Peck Morrisons bass and the often-overlooked Dave Bai! leys d rumming augment to perfection. The addition of Ray Barrettos congas (a regular on many of Donaldsons sessions from this period) is tasteful and a nice touch without turning every song into a Latin re-write. Play, Ray is an arrangement dedicated to the congist while The Masquerade Is Over, Calling All Cats and Move complete the set. This live date broken into two volumes has never sounded better! Upon its original release, critics and fans alike marveled at the recording quality and the moderate amount of audience noise that can distract from crucial moments of music. Recorded just two years after moving to New York, at the Manhattan Towers on May 14, 1958, leader Burrell decided to eschew a small ensemble and super-size the bandstand. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder for Signal and released in 1957 (ah, you figured that out!), the sound on this set is highly indicative of the Blue Note stereo spread Van Gelder was developing. Ex-Parker alum trumpeter Rodney and his all-star support blow up a storm on the six varied selections. With Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ira Sullivan on tenor sax and second trumpet, Oscar Pettiford's bass, and Philly Joe Jones and Elvin Jones splitting time behind the drums.

Five Feet Soul Jimmy Rushing $32.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
A one-off recording for the Colpix label in 1963, this set by "Mr. Five-By-Five"
further demonstrates the man could swing and sell a ballad, all with the same
conviction and style. A veteran of the Blue Devils, Benny Moten's band and the
early Count Basie ensembles, he became along with Big Joe Turner, one of the top
"blues shouters" in the Kansas City mode. As with most of the now-collectable
Colpix/Colgems recordings of the 1960s, the sound on this Rushing set is incredible, having been transferred
directly from the original 3 track masters, capturing the intimacy of his phrasing while letting the backing musicians cut
through in a crystal clear accompaniment. Highlights abound in jazz chestnuts and
newer tunes alike: Just Because, 'Tain't Nobody's Biz-Ness If I Do, Heartaches, I'm
Walkin' Through Heaven With You, Trouble In Mind, Please Come Home, You Always Hurt
The One You Love, My Bucket's Got A Hole In It and more.
Birth of the Cool Miles Davis $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
So dubbed because these three sessions two from early 1949, one from March
1950 are where the sound known as cool jazz essentially formed, The Birth
of the Cool remains one of the defining, pivotal moments in jazz. This is
where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful, big-band arrangements
and a relaxed, subdued mood that made it all seem easy, even at its most
intricate. After all, there's a reason why this music was called cool; it
has a hip, detached elegance, never getting too hot, even as the rhythms
skip and jump. Indeed, the most remarkable thing about these sessions
arranged by Gil Evans and featuring such heavy-hitters as Kai Winding, Gerry
Mulligan, Lee Konitz, and Max Roach is that they sound intimate, as the
nonet never pushes too hard, never sounds like the work of nine musicians.
Furthermore, the group keeps things short and concise (probably the result
of the running time of singles, but the results are the same), which keeps
the focus on the tones and tunes. The virtuosity led to relaxing, stylish
mood music as the end result the very thing that came to define West Coast
or "cool" jazz but this music is so inventive, it remains alluring even
after its influence has been thoroughly absorbed into the mainstream

Just a glance at the original cover is enough – the ‘King of the Trumpet’ and the ‘King of the Keyboard’ must have thoroughly enjoyed making this album back in 1957. Musical sparks obviously flashed right from the very first title. Well, that’s not really surprising since the two musicians were the ‘dream team’ of the Fifties, and only the producer Norman Granz, who had both artists under contract, could make that dream come true. Louis Armstrong is at the centre of most titles as singer, but his crystal-clear, brilliant trumpet sound had lost nothing of its fascination in the Fifties.
Naturally Oscar Peterson does not let himself be restricted to the mere role of accompanist – he’s far too genial, too full of imagination and technically accomplished for that. “You Go To My Head”, in the version as sung by Billie Holiday, can match hers any day, filled as it is with unspent freshness and clarity. This title provides a good example of how Armstrong and the Peterson Quartet breathed new life into the old war horses of the “American Songbook” and set new standards for the art of improvisation. ‘There’s No You’, in which Louis is joined by Herb Ellis, is a jewel of a performance and deserves special mention. The old MGM/Verve pressings often had the drawback that the high notes tended to hiss, which of course spoiled listening to Armstrong’s voice. Luckily this defect has been ironed out in this new pressing.

Out to Lunch Eric Dolphy $11.99
Vinyl LP Reissue - Sealed
Out To Lunch is one of Eric Dolphy's lasting classics and most forward looking statements featuring Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Tony Williams. Although Dolphy's reed playing is as amazing as you'd expect, the real surprise here is Hutcherson, whose vibes ring out with a cold harsh tone that provides the perfect edge to the set. Despite a large number of later recordings, he almost never hit this level again and it's his playing that gives the set such a unique sound. Includes the tracks; "Straight Up & Down," "Gazzelloni," "Hat And Beard," "Out To Lunch" and "Something Sweet, Something Tender." Out To Lunch is an innovative document by one of the most emotional, resourceful reedmen in jazz history.
