The quintet delivers beautiful strong renditions of Autumn Leaves, Love For Sale, One For Daddy-O, Dancing In The Dark, and the title tune. Cut from the original first generation analog masters, it sizzles.

Ironically, this album entitled: "Introducing Johnny Griffin"
does not have tenor saxophonist Johnny, as a leader , but it
gained Griffin a great deal of attention. Soon billed as "the
world's fastest saxophonist," Griffin was also a superior ballad
interpreter with a fairly distinctive tone of his own. With strong
support given by pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Curly Russell, and
drummer Max Roach, Griffin romps through: Mil Dew (Griffin)
Chicago Calling (Griffin), These Foolish Things, The Boy Next Door,
Nice and Easy, It's Alright With Me and Lover Man. Recorded April
17, 1956 by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder directly to 1/4" Mono
analog tape which was used at Bernie Grundman Mastering on Classic's
all tube Mono cutting system. This is as close to the original as
you'll ever likely get and it is pressed on Classic's proprietary
200g QUIEX SV- P (SUPER VINYL PROFILE).

Originally released in 1959 on Roulette, this meeting
finds Count Basie and his band in a peak period: a
fantastic rhythm section, tight and powerful brass,
silky reeds and skillful arrangers like Neal Hefti doing
his charts. And you can hear the glee in his piano
playing, to boot. Tony Bennett's vocals seem propelled
along with such support and swings right into line on
such tunes as "Jeepers Creepers", "Anything Goes" and
"I'll Guess I'll Have To Change My Plans". Ballads and
up tempo tunes alike are perfect blends for these two
masters, who make them all sound fresh. Other songs
include Life is A Song, With Plenty of Money and You,

I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face, Poor Little Rich

Blue Train (200 Gram) John Coltrane $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl MONO LP - Sealed
Arguably one of the most influential titles from Coltrane and one of the greatest Blue Note releases ever. In 1957, right at the very start of his prestige recording period, 'Trane did this one-off set in New Jersey with Rudy Van Gelder with historic results. The recent reissue abundance of the title, re-packaged and enhanced in many ways, reveals the reverence put upon these sides.
Transferred from the first-generation full track mono masters.
1. Blue Train 2. Moment's Notice 3. Locomotion 4. I'm Old Fashioned 5. Lazy Bird
This stunning mono set was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and originally
released on Blue Note Records in June of 1957. The original Jazz
Messengers, who Mobley had help found, had just disbanded and the heavyweight
tenor-man was splitting time between Horace Silver's new group and as an
exclusive Blue Note recording artist. Calling on some of the cream of NYC's
finest, Mobley opted for a sextet setting and the results became a classic.
Including another sax player in Curtis Porter on alto and second tenor
was a unique thought and added to the front-line punch of Bill Hardman's trumpet.
The rhythm of Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers at the bass and Art Taylor behind
the drums is an all-star adhesive holding the group tightly together. Mobley's "dry
and intimate" tone shines through in a subtle approach to the harmonies and cadence
set in each selection. Mastered from the original first-generation monaural master
tapes and cut with Classic Record's custom-built mono cutting head. Included are
Falling In Love With Love, Mighty Moe and Joe, Bags' Groove, Double Exposure and News.

Dial S for Sonny Sonny Clark $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
Dial "S" for Sonny, Sonny Clark first session for Blue Note Records and his first session as a leader, is a terrific set of laidback bop, highlighted by Sonny Clark liquid, swinging solos. Sonny Clark leads a first-rate group -- Art Farmer (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Wilbur Ware (bass), Louis Hayes (drums) -- through four originals and two standards, balancing the selections between swinging bop and reflective ballads. There are traces of Bud Powell in Sonny Clark style, but he's beginning to come into his own, developing a style that's alternately edgy and charmingly relaxed. Hank Mobley, Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller have their moments, but Sonny Clark steals the show in this set of fine, straight-ahead bop.
1. Dial S For Sonny
2. Bootin' It
3. It Could Happen To You
4. Sonny's Mood
5. Shoutin' At A Riff

Candy (200 Gram) Lee Morgan $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl MONO LP - Sealed
This classic Blue Note session finds trumpeter Morgan not having to battle
other horns, just front-and-center with an all-star trio behind him. It was
his only quartet recording as a leader, for Blue Note. The exquisite Sonny
Clark on piano, Doug Watkins' solid bass and the ever-tasteful Art Taylor
behind the drums complete these sessions recorded in Hackensack by RVG in
Nov. '57 and Feb. '58. Loaded with standards, it's a hard-bop masterpiece
that both swings and shows the ballad side of one of the defining young
trumpeters from the late 50s - early 60s. Not discounting the contributions
from the rhythm section, the high-caliber interplay between just trumpet
and
piano is a rare treat and a marvel to behold. Selections include Since I
Fell For You, C.T.A., All The Way, Who Do You Love, I Hope?, Personality,
All At Once You Love Her and the title tune.
This is a particularly strong set from trumpeter Kenny Dorham, for it has
the debut versions of "Lotus Flower," "Minor Holiday," and "La Villa," three
of his most rewarding compositions. The first half of the set is Afro-Cuban
in nature due to the inclusion of Carlos "Potato" Valdes' conga; also on the
album are trombonist J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley on tenor, baritonist Cecil
Payne, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Art
Blakey. Dorham has an all-star group of young hard boppers eager to play
his challenging and memorable originals.
Transferred from the first-generation full track mono masters.

Little Johnny C Johnny Coles $49.99
180 Gram Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Trumpeter Johnny Coles, a distinctive and passionate player best known for his associations with Gil Evans, the remarkable Charles Mingus Quintet of 1964, and Herbie Hancock’s late 60’s Sextet, led relatively few albums of his own, and only two before 1982. Recorded in 1963, Little Johnny C is universally recognized as Johnny Coles’ finest recording. Cole’s soulful trumpet is heard in superb form as he pushes the hard bop mainstream forward. Duke Pearson, who was both a very skilled pianist, as well as one of the top arrangers of the 1960s, contributes five very fresh originals to the set. Notably, Little Johnny C is also one of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson’s finest early recordings – his round sound and innovative phrasing clearly evident at this early point in his career. With the superb title cut, the ballad “So Sweet My Little Girl”, and “Jano” being high-points, in addition to beautiful flute and alto solos contributed by Leo Wright, “Little Johnny C” is an masterful album by an artist at his creative peak. This is a set to be savored again and again.

In 1962, Duke Ellington's greatest creative achievements lay outside the realm of his orchestra in stunning small-group collaborations with Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Max Roach. But 1963 would prove a different story from the first week of the year when he completed work on Afro-Bossa, which according to the late pianist and Ellington scholar Mark Tucker "ranks among the best albums he ever made." The title is a bit of a misnomer as there is not a bossa nova or samba rhythm anywhere on the album. Instead it is a head-on fusion of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and pure blue-hued Duke.
Despite the inclusion of three older pieces ("Absinthe," "Pyramid" and "Eighth Veil"), the album is a cohesive and startling vivid original 12-part suite. Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Hamilton, Paul Gonsalves, Ray Nance, Cootie Williams and Lawrence Brown are the principal soloists and each are in superb form here. The title tune, "Caline (Silk Lace)" and "Pyramid" found their way into the band's regular performance book and perhaps the greatest composition in the suite, "Purple Gazelle" became a favorite among other musicians. This is Ellington at his best when the compositions, the orchestra and the soloists fuse into a single element that brings rich, colorful music to life.

Satchmo Plays King Oliver is one of those titles that audiophiles have known about for years and a favorite at hi-fi shows for demonstration. The first cut "St. James Infirmary" is out of this world and the excellent renditions of "I Ain't Got Nobody" and "Frankie and Johnny" aren't too far behind. Originally issued on Audio Fidelity, this Classic reissue is available for the first time on Classic Records 200g 45RPM Clarity Vinyl. Not to be missed!
Clarity Vinyl represents the ultimate in vinyl formulations because it is comprised of over 90% of the highest quality co-polymer available, a key component in vinyl pellets used for manufacturing vinyl records. Further, Clarity Vinyl has no carbon black additive, common in vinyl formulas for LPs. Carbon Black contains trace metals that become magnetized and cause electrical distortions in cartridges during playback that smears the sound. By taking out the Carbon Black, Classic Records is able to dramatically reduce the electrical distortions and thus bring more clarity to the playback process, providing a more realistic musical experience to the listener and LP enthusiast.

Freddie Hubbard arrived in New York in 1960 and set the jazz scene on its ear with a gorgeous tone, perfect technique and great ideas. This was his third album in less than a year and it yielded several masterpieces including the title tune and a powerful reading of Randy Weston's "Cry Me Not."

Already the most formidable new trumpeter in jazz in 1962, Freddie Hubbard came into his own as a composer with this album with great originals that range from the complex, ferocious swinger "Hub-Tones" to his poignant "Lament For Booker," written for the later Booker Little. James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Clifford Jarvis are all at their peak, bringing the brilliant music to life with artistry and feeling.

One of the most controversial and difficult musicians in jazz, Charles Mingus was also one of the most prolific, and perhaps the greatest bass player jazz has ever known. Released shortly after his groundbreaking Pithecanthropus Erectus, which marked the dawning of Mingus' era as a major player in jazz, The Clown took it to the next level and as a result captured some of the finest music Mingus ever made. Listeners can now enjoy the complete sessions for the album, recorded on Feb 13 and March 12, 1957. Uniquely for a jazz player of this period, this album is comprised entirely of Mingus-penned tracks, including the explosive “Haitian Fight Song” and his tribute to Charlie Parker “Reincarnation of a Lovebird,” while the title track features a spoken word piece by Jean Shepherd.

Caravan Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers $50.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Art Blakey led many editions of his Jazz Messengers over more than three decades, but a strong argument can be made that the Messengers of his Riverside period constituted his strongest unit. With Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller in the front line, with Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman as Blakey’s rhythm-section mates, its combination of musicianship and sheer swinging force has rarely been equaled in a small band. Caravan was the first of Blakey’s Riverside albums and endures as a living monument to his nonpareil drumming and leadership. His solo on the title tune is one of the finest recorded examples of Blakey’s unique melding of precision and power. Hubbard and Shorter contributed memorable compositions and, with Fuller and Walton, some of the greatest soloing of the 1960s.

During the autumn of his illustrious career, Dexter Gordon (1923-1990) was on a winning streak. In 1976, the sophisticated giant of the tenor saxophone had returned to America after 14 successful years in Europe (with occasional visits to his native country); when he played a homecoming engagement at New York's fabled Village Vanguard, the seats were filled each night with adoring fans and enraptured critics. Two years later, Gordon recorded Manhattan Symphonie, his third album for Columbia and the first with his exceptional working rhythm section of pianist George Cables, bassist Rufus Reid, and drummer Eddie Gladden. From the opening notes of the classic ballad "As Time Goes By," we are fully aware that we're in the presence of a master. The tone is luminous; the placement of the notes, impeccable; the feeling profoundly affecting. More than almost any other improviser of his caliber, Gordon understands exactly why “the fundamental things apply”. The rest of the set combines bright new material, such as Gordon’s jauntily bopping blues "LTD" (which stands for "Long Tall Dexter") and Cables' samba "I Told You So" with updates of two post-bop staples: Donald Byrd's "Tanya" (which Gordon had recorded for Blue Note in 1964) and John Coltrane's propulsive "Moment's Notice." But the masterpiece herein - indeed one of Gordon's all-time surpassing performances - is "Body and Soul," in which Gordon, an early crucial influence on Coltrane's approach to the tenor, returns the favour by taking a page out of Coltrane’s (and McCoy Tyner’s) harmonic book. This expanded issue of Manhattan Symphonie includes two bonus tracks, also from 1978: Thelonius Monk’s lustrous “Ruby My Dear”, and a previously unreleased on vinyl rendition of “Secret Love”, a Dexter favourite. In addition to the acclaimed writer Pete Hamill’s wonderful original liner notes, there is a lovely reminiscence from pianist George Cables. Personnel: Dexter Gordon, tenor saxophone/ George Cables, piano/ Rufus Reid, bass/ Eddie Gladden, drums

Tom Cat Lee Morgan $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
The most common reaction after hearing Lee Morgan’s Tom Cat is “why on earth didn’t Blue Note release this at the time!”. The great trumpeter, only 26 at the time of this recording, and his all-star cast with Jackie McLean, Art Blakey, Curtis Fuller and McCoy Tyner are a who's who of the mid-1960s hard bop scene. Quite simply, this is one of Lee Morgans’ finest sessions. Even Blue Note owner Alfred Lion, when asked, was hard pressed to understand why a session of this caliber was held back. However Morgan was recording so frequently for Blue Note during this era that several of his finest recordings were lost in the shuffle as the label looked for another hit to rival the massive success of Lee’s The Sidewinder. The reasons are somewhat obscure but in any case, this classic outing sat in the vaults as Blue Note slowly declined, became inactive and by 1981 was reduced to being a reissue company focusing on its past glories. With Morgan no longer around (having been shot in 1972 by a jealous lover while performing at Slugs night club in NYC), it’s as if Lee Morgan is speaking from the grave, pointing out future directions for younger musicians. This memorable, innovative and soulful music is for many listeners one of Lee Morgan’s best recordings.

Lee Morgan - trumpet
Jackie McLean - alto saxophone
Art Blakey - drums
Curtis Fuller - trombone
McCoy Tyner - piano

Leapin' And Lopin' Sonny Clark $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
It is some jazz musicians fate to be better known after their death then they were during their lifetime, to be considered a legend today when they were actually overshadowed by others during their prime. Sonny Clark, who died in January 1963 at the age of 31 due to self-abuse was well documented during 1957-62 but he never achieved the headlines of Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck, to name just three more famous pianists from the time. Blue Note fans have always known about Clark since he led seven superb albums for the label. Fans of Bud Powell knew that Clark was one of his top disciples, and collectors of Buddy DeFranco's records of the early 1950s were aware of his contributions to the clarinetist's recordings. But to a general public that bought Erroll Garner and George Shearing records, Sonny Clark was an unknown name. It was not until after his death that the music world seemed to finally realize what it had lost. On Leapin And Lopin, his last recording as a leader, Clark for the first and only time leads a quintet featuring trumpeter Tommy Turrentine and tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse. The pianist introduces a few of his final originals, takes many sparkling solos, and is heard at the peak of his powers, carving out his place in jazz history. This is timeless music and, although Sonny Clark may have been taken for granted during his life, he is now rightfully considered one of jazz's irreplaceable immortals.
Musicians:
Sonny Clark - piano
Tommy Turrentine - trumpet
Charlie Rouse - tenor saxophone
Butch Warren - bass
Billy Higgins - drums
Track Listing:
1. Somethin' Special
2. Deep in a Dream

Jazz has had its share of archival discoveries, not the least of which were Dean Benedetti's recordings of Charlie Parker. But the discovery of more music from the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane is made all the more extraordinary because so few knew it existed and the only official recordings by this band were made in its first weeks of existence. Now, a forgotten November 1957 Carnegie Hall concert taped by Voice of America radio has been discovered by the Library of Congress with two appearances by the quartet.
These two 25-minute, five-tune sets feature the quartet in great fidelity and unbelievable form. The empathy and invention of the group here far surpasses the Riverside session, made months earlier. Playing together every night for 18 weeks sharpened the skills and interaction of these brilliant musicians. Monk's piano playing has never sounded like this; his arpeggios are virtuosic and each note rings with clarity on the Carnegie Hall piano. Coltrane had fully mastered Monk's music by this time. In the confines of short playing times (most tunes are four to six minutes in duration), he plays with a fervid intensity trying to cram all his ideas into a brief amount of time. Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Shadow Wilson play the intricate arrangements with fluidity and push the soloists to great heights. Thanks to the clarity and presence of Wilson's drums on this recording, his work will be a revelation to anyone who had not had the fortune to see him live.
This LP was mastered from the original 15-inches-per-second analog tapes by Kevin Hodge at the Master Cutting Room and pressed at RTI on 200-gram virgin vinyl.

The third and final of the great Miles Davis-Gil Evans collaborations of 1957-59 was also their most ambitious. This set finds Davis in the forefront improvising on two numbers associated with Spanish music and three Evans compositions in that idiom. Much of the music is quite dramatic and emotional (notably Saeta) and plays at his best throughout, really stretching the boundaries of jazz.

Tenor-great Dexter Gordon and trumpeter Donald Byrd make for an excellent team on this 1964 hard bop quintet date with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels Pedersen (then only 18) and drummer Art Taylor.
One of the main weapons in sax legend Stanley Turrentine's arsenal was the knowledge that a real groove requires just the right amount of energy without hitting the listener over the head. That knowledge is put to practical use throughout Turrentine's first recording for CTI, Sugar. Aided by the subtly soulful organ of Butch Cornell and the smoldering sensuality of George Benson's guitar, Turrentine churns out solidly grooving tunes that employ blues-based economy. The fiery trumpet interjections of Freddie Hubbard keep things moving, but Turrentine's mastery of the mid-tempo groove is exemplified throughout, whether on the down-and-dirty jam "Sunshine Alley" or a soulful take on John Coltrane's "Impressions."
Sonny Rollins' mid-sixties experiment with bossa nova was completely different than was Stan Getz Jazz Samba. Rollins stayed true to his bop and avant garde roots, using bossa nova as a surgeon uses a scalpel, to dissect and deconstruct familiar melodies and turn them into something new. This hip reinterpretation of standards is Sonny's trademark, and in this album it's uncompromising. The whole album is interesting and highly original, but I will only comment on one cut, Rollin's deconstruction of a sentimental broadway ballad from Camelot. He takes the kitch out of this tune and turns it into a fierce meditation on the origins of jazz, the mystery of rhythm, and the fundamental particles of melody. Rollin's version of "If Ever I Would Leave You" is nothing less than this: one of the greatest tenor solos in the history of jazz.
