Dear John C. Elvin Jones $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed PRE-ORDER
Elvin Jones was nearing the end of his long stay with John Coltrane when he led these sessions in 1965, and while the style is small-group post-bop, the music is very different from the thick textures of the Coltrane quartet. The core band is a trio with the Charlie Parker-influenced alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and the brilliant bassist Richard Davis. Mariano soars overhead on a series of lyrical standards, including "Everything Happens to Me" and "This Love of Mine." Roland Hanna joins the group for the first three selections, and Elvin's brother, Hank for the last four. Of the Hanna tracks, Charles Mingus's "Love Bird" stands out, while Hank Jones' crisp and inventive lines shine on the classic bop of "Anthropology" and Ellington's "Fantazm."

After establishing himself as a new star with Miles Davis quintet, the Thelonious Monk quartet, and various Prestige recordings with Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane made his debut as a leader with this LP. It was also the first album on any label to showcase what came to be known as the classic John Coltrane Quartet. That group, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, established itself in its four years of existence as one of the most influential ensembles in jazz, and one of the most popular as well. The quartet offers wonderful readings here of "The Inch Worm" and "Out Of This World" plus the tracks "Soul Eyes," "Tunji" and "Miles' Mode."

It's hard to believe that in 1956, a 26 year old Bill Evans was still virtually unknown and was still a year away from joining the celebrated Miles Davis Sextet. His debut recording as leader, New Jazz Conceptions introduced the trio format of piano, bass and drums that would become the jazz legend's standard for years to come. It's easy to hear in these highly individual trio and solo treatments a clear prophecy of the rich inventiveness that so deeply influenced Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and an entire generation of jazz pianists.

Originally released in 1957 on the Bethlehem label, this obscure album shows Charles Mingus exploring new territory with his sextet while incorporating vocals into his work. On the opening track, "Scenes In The City," Mel Stewart performs a spoken word piece written by actor and playwright Lonne Elder III and the legendary Langston Hughes. The track is a snapshot of Harlem and NYC in the 1950s and for that alone this album stands out in the Mingus repertoire. Although the rest of the album features no spoken word or poetry, the performances here are top notch.

Throughout his long career as a bandleader, drummer Art Blakey very rarely played with big bands. This Bethlehem date was a one-shot affair, an opportunity for his powerful drumming to be heard propelling a 15-piece orchestra through a set of mostly new material. With arrangers Melba Liston and Al Cohn and such soloists as John Coltrane (who is also featured on two quintet numbers), trombonist Jimmy Cleveland and trumpeters Donald Byrd and Ray Copeland, this was a mighty band indeed!

Although Milt Jackson, John Lewis and Kenny Clarke had been playing together since the mid-'40s as the rhythm section for the legendary Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, it was not until 1951, with the addition of Percy Heath, that they became the Modern Jazz Quartet. Experimenting with many styles, including bebop and Cool Jazz, they became perhaps best known for their formal presentation (in tuxedo) and choice of venues (concert halls), in a self-professed attempt to make jazz "serious," like classical music. Although their debut LP released in 1952 as a 10" is now a classic in jazz, the music still feels very immediate and features the earliest versions of their best known compositions. This version also features extra tracks from 1952-1954.
This album is composed of three different sessions. The first session was recorded at WOR Studios in New York in May of 1953 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, John Lewis on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and piano, Percy Heath on bass and Max Roach on drums, while the second session was recorded at New York's Beltone studios in March of 1954 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. "I'll Remember April" was recorded at a third session the following month at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Dave Schildkraut on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. All three sessions hail from Miles' Prestige period which stretched from 1951-1955.

Way Out West Sonny Rollins $14.99
Vinyl LP Reissue - Sealed
Mastered off the original 2-track tape recorded with a tube AKG-C12 microphone on a tube Ampex 350 machine. Features Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics.
The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now."
Mastered by Doug Sax.
"Way Out West is a piano-less trio - another va-va-vivid Roy DuNann production - with Rollins spinning quirky geometric patterns through odd standards like 'I'm an Old Cow Hand.'" - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's "Best-Sounding Jazz LPs")

Freddie Redd is a name that every jazz collector should know. During 1957-60, he recorded three memorable albums: San Francisco Suite (a trio date for Riverside), The Connection (his score for the famous play) and Shades Of Redd. While he has spent much of the time in obscurity since then, with occasional comebacks, Shades Of Redd is the obvious highpoint of the pianist-composer's recording career. Redd wrote the music specifically for the two mighty horn players featured with his quintet (altoist Jackie McLean and tenor-saxophonist Tina Brooks). While Redd's fine piano playing is an outgrowth of Bud Powell's, his writing style was always quite original and it clearly inspired the two contrasting saxophonists when they met up in 1960. Filled with the optimism of the era and looking forward to freer sounds but staying closely connected to swinging hard bop, this formerly rare gem hints at John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman while sounding very much like Freddie Redd. No jazz collection is complete without Shades Of Redd.

Originally released on Prestige in 1957, this is the third LP from NYC street performer and avant-garde/minimalist composer Moondog. This reissue of MoodSwing is Joshua Redman’s third recording as a band leader and his first featuring all-original compositions. The young saxophonist sought to change what he believed to be the public perception of jazz, a largely academic and overly intellectualized form of music devoid of the emotional themes that drive many other genres. As he explains in the original liner notes, jazz was seen as, “an elite art form, reserved for a sophisticated intelligentsia who rendezvous in secret.” With MoodSwing, Redman makes the case that jazz can be an accessible musical medium that could evoke basic and visceral emotional reactions.
From the playfully coy “Chill” to the urgent energy of “Rejoice,” Redman offers up a communicative and inspired record of emotional diversity. Joining him in this task was a young band of his peers, all of whom have since become established and esteemed figures in jazz. MoodSwing was one of the first exposures the jazz community had to young pianist Brad Mehldau, then beginning his career in Redman’s quartet. Mehldau anchors these compositions behind Redman’s lyrical playing, occasionally stepping out front to show his talents in “The Oneness of Two” and “Past in the Present.” The band’s rhythm section has since been recognized as one of jazz’s best, with Christian McBride on bass, and then little-known Brian Blade on the drums. As the follow-up to his breakout Wish, MoodSwing was universally praised by critics and enjoyed commercial success and many of these compositions are still featured in the saxophonist’s live sets today.

By the time this LP was released, Sonny Rollins already had such albums under his name as Worktime (OJCCD-007-2) and Sonny Rollins Plus 4 (OJCCD-243-2), in addition to his sideman exploits with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. Tenor Madness, in which he was joined by the rhythm section from the Miles Davis Quintet, further substantiated and underlined his rapidly rising stature. The material is an effective mixture of Rollins' playing attitudes with an intriguing original, "Paul's Pal," and the mining of unusual material such as "My Reverie" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." And, of course, there is the celebrated title track featuring the two titans to emerge in the '50s, Rollins and his guest, visiting in the studio that day, John Coltrane.

Yes, who else? Can you imagine Hollywood's best 1950's musicals without Norma Jean's voice, or late 1950's comedies without her incredibly charismatic and sizzling humor. Maybe you're stuck with her Playboy's centerfold when she was not yet famous, but don't get tricked: Norma Jean was much, much more than that. You don't get so much attention from Camelot, anyway, if you're not a magnetic diva like she was. These tunes, taken from the motion pictures she starred in, or simply resulting from “staged” happenings like the infamous, 'nude look' performance of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" that still generates some heart failures, are some of the best performances of this never forgotten lady, also known as the quintessence of men's desire.

In early 1965, just as the West African High-life scene was starting to get repetitive, the revolutionary sound of Fela Kuti & His Koola Lobitos burst upon us. A strikingly original and very talented musician, Fela was trained at the Trinity College of Music in London and despite his primary instrument being the trumpet, he was an excellent pianist, composer, arranger and vocalist. To maintain his reputation as West Africa's leading musician, Fela continuously experimented with varying forms of High-life and other exotic rhythm patterns. This is the very first full length album by Fela, recorded in 1965.

Blue Train John Coltrane $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
"...Blue Train remains a superb achievement both musically and sonically, and Acoustic Sounds' pressing knocks off all other reissues...The sound is immediate, with superb instrumental balance, and a big, airy, coherent soundstage. The bass and drums are well captured, serving as deep anchors that allow the horn players to blow away with a sense of controlled yet astonishing freedom." - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, June/July 2009
"These are simply amazing pressings. I have no regrets whatsoever about signing up for this subscription. The folks I'd invited over last Saturday are by no means audiophiles, but they couldn't believe that they were listening to vinyl, or that recordings that were 40+ years old could sound so good. I'm working hard to turn them into vinyl converts. These discs are the icing on the cake!" – Tim Bingaman, Acoustic Sounds customer
"The new LPs, as with the others, superb in their production and packaging. The quality of the sleeves and printing is unsurpassed and is a real indicator of the attention spent to the new 45rpm pressings inside. There are many hours of good listening ahead with this series." – Barry Paulson, Acoustic Sounds customer
"…As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their hands…Back home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent me…I hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud." – Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

"Mingus is also all about the ensemble...this reissue has a life and immediacy I've not heard before with this title, whose stunning music overwhelms any flaws of the recording." - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, June/July 2009
Produced by Impulse! A&R director Bob Thiele in 1963, this recording is a major showcase of the talented Charles Mingus as a bassist, pianist and writer. In his 1963 original liner notes, critic-at-large Nat Hentoff said that of all the musicians, it is impossible to remain indifferent to Mingus. This recording more than any other testifies to Hentoff's claim. More so today than in 60's, there is truly only one Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus.

That's My Story John Lee Hooker $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45RPM LP - Sealed
"The spot-free vinyl pressing has fantastic presence and three-dimensional studio echoes. When Hooker bends, pulls, or hammers-on strings, the timbre is true and technique obvious...Magnified on LP, these and other subtleties enhance the artist's intent. While extremely pricey, the set is representative of why Analogue Productions' line of 45rpm LPs is currently the cat's pajamas in audiophile software." - Bob Gendron, The Absolute Sound, June/July 2005, Issue 154
“Hooker’s earliest Riverside albums presented him playing solo acoustic guitar, in a conscious effort to direct his work to listeners outside the R&B audience. Opinions differ on the matter, but this outing is more interesting than his solo acoustic Riverside records, due to the presence of a supporting rhythm section on most of the tracks. The liner notes (in the fashion of the day) are almost apologetic about this, emphasizing that it’s not to create R&B rhythms, but “to free Hooker from the burden of carrying the full rhythm load.” To make matters more palatable for the purists, maybe that’s why a couple of jazz players were chosen for the job (bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, who formed the rhythm section for Cannonball Adderley at the time). What’s important is not how pure the music is, but that it’s a decent album, striking a good midpoint between his acoustic and electric sound.” — All Music Guide

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
A direct link to the styles of Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, veteran stride pianist Ralph Sutton is featured here, at 61 years young, in an elegant showcase of traditional jazz music. The quartet is completed with Australian brothers Bob and Len Bernard on trumpet and drums respectively. This 1983 session, with it's great live feel, will catapult the listener to a table "down front" at The Famous Door, 52nd Street circa 1941. Despite various reissue formats over several decades, the seven original LPs contained in Thelonious Monk -- The Riverside Tenor Sessions stood perfectly well on their own at the time of initial release and remain among the highest achievements of a truly golden age. Recorded and released between 1956 and 1961, these seven Monk combo albums were critical in Monk's emergence from a decade of ridicule and neglect to his status at the pinnacle of the jazz pantheon. In addition to some of his best recorded piano performances and more than two dozen of his profoundly personal compositions, these albums provide an overview of the era's major tenor saxophonists, with contributions by Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Charlie Rouse and Harold Land. Max Roach, Art Blakely, Roy Haynes and Thad Jones are among the other jazz immortals featured on the essential Brilliant Corners, Monk's Music, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, Thelonious in Action, Misterioso, 5 by Monk by 5 and Quartet Plus Two at the Blackhawk. Like the Miles Davis quintet records contained in Analogue Productions' Miles Davis Quintet: The Prestige Recordings, these Monk albums are among the pinnacle of the LP art -- and they have never sounded better.
The critics who had been slow in recognizing what fellow jazzmen already knew-that here was a young giant in our midst-could not help see the light. Tenor Madness, in which Sonny Rollins was joined by the rhythm section from the Miles Davis Quintet, further substantiated his rapidly rising stature. The material is an effective mixture of Rollins' playing attitudes with an intriguing original, "Paul's Pal," and the mining of unusual material such as "My Reverie" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." The celebrated title track features John Coltrane. Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray.
Track Listing:
1. My Reverie
2. Paul's Pal
3. The Most Beautiful Girl In the World
4. When Your Lover Has Gone
5. Tenor Madness
Few albums in the history of contemporary American music can be more deserving than this one of the designation Original Jazz Classic. It is the first of two Riverside albums derived from the legendary final appearance of the first Bill Evans trio - taped during the last day of a Village Vanguard engagement, barely ten days before the tragic death of bassist Scott LaFaro. The recordings have long been recognized as capturing the essence of the unique three-way interaction that characterized the trio. This album is further distinguished by its emphasis on the solo work and compositions of the innovative LaFaro.
Track Listing:
1. Gloria's Step
2. My Man's Gone Now
3. Solar
4. Alice in Wonderland
5. All Of You
6. Jade Visions
A longtime audiophile demonstration disc. Hope will show off your system's dynamic range as well as any record ever released. Hugh Masekela, the outstanding South African trumpeter, assembled a seven-piece group and recorded this great set live at Washington, D.C.'s Blues Alley. The songs stretch over a period of nearly five decades and serve as an informal guided tour of Masekela's life. The songs are honest and bare, and as for the sound – WOW!
Track Listing:
1. Abangoma (The Healers)
2. Languta
3. Grazin' In The Grass
4. Nomali
5. Marketplace
6. Ntyilo Ntyilo (The Love Bird)
7. Stimela (The Coal Train)
Bryan's honesty in her approach to song writing has created a stylization that defies category. Neon Angel is a unique and personal body of work. In it, her lyrics are visual and socially relevant, yet intimate, poetic and immediate. Her music ranges from the ethereal to a plaintive earthiness, and at times both expressions are grasped in the same moment. This recording is as classic and as powerful as Joni Mitchell's legendary Blue.
The setting for Nancy's songs is specific, yet timeless. Blame It On The Moon is a Southern swamplife spiritual sung against an undulating bass line. Pulse and Time is as light as whipped cream in the confluence of dobro, ukulele and D-tuned acoustic guitar. And you can almost see the cold blue November sky behind a silhouette of skyscrapers in the melancholy Chicago Skyline and feel the singer's loneliness as her soaring vocals cry out for an irredeemable past.
Neon Angel was recorded live, direct-to-two-track at Blue Heaven Studios, the converted 77-year-old church in Salina, Kansas. This 13-song, all-acoustic album emphasizes the church's natural acoustics, bringing to life the massive, vaulted ceiling and Nancy on the altar.
Though this is only her second solo release, Nancy has won acclaim for several songs she's written and sung for Disney, including a track for the Grammy-nominated and now-gold record Take My Hand. Her songs have also appeared on MTV's popular shows The Real World and Road Rules.
Every track on this record is naked and essential and is an equally integral part of a brilliant mosaic.

2. Blame it On The Moon
3. Pulse and Time
4. Chicago Skyline
5. Neon Angel

Introducing The 3 Sounds The 3 Sounds $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed PRE-ORDER
What's remarkable about Introducing The 3 Sounds is how the trio's lightly swinging sound arrived fully intact. From the basis of this album, it sounds as if pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins and drummer William Dowdy have been playing together for years. There's empathetic, nearly intuitive interplay between the three musicians and Harris' deft style already sounds mature and entirely distinctive.

Andrew Simpkins, bass

New Soil wasn't the first session Jackie McLean recorded for Blue Note, but it was the first one released, and as the title suggests, the first glimpses of McLean's desire to push beyond the limits of bop are already apparent. They're subtle, of course, and nowhere near as pronounced, as they would be in just a few years' time, but – as with the 1959 material later issued on Jackie's Bag – hints of Ornette Coleman's stream-of-consciousness melodic freedom are beginning to find their way into McLean's improvisations. His playing is just a touch more angular than the ear expects, especially given the very bluesy nature of pieces like McLean's 11-minute vamp, "Hip Strut," and pianist Walter Davis Jr.'s infectious boogie-woogie "Greasy." Coleman's influence is most apparent on McLean's "Minor Apprehension," where the freewheeling, Coleman-esque main theme is paralleled by trumpeter Donald Byrd in a definite nod to Don Cherry.

Davis Cup Walter Davis Jr. $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed PRE-ORDER
Although a Blue Note regular at the time on sessions by Donald Byrd, Art Blakey and others, Walter Davis made only one album for the label. With Byrd, Jackie McLean, Sam Jones and Art Taylor, he explores six of his finest compositions. Davis possessed the ability to write music that was funky and catchy, but still progressive, which explains why he was one of Art Blakey's favorite pianists and composers. "Minor Mind," "Make It" and "Millie's Delight" are among the album's highlights.
