Elvin Jones was nearing the end of his long stay with John Coltrane when he led these sessions in 1965, and while the style is small-group post-bop, the music is very different from the thick textures of the Coltrane quartet. The core band is a trio with the Charlie Parker-influenced alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and the brilliant bassist Richard Davis. Mariano soars overhead on a series of lyrical standards, including "Everything Happens to Me" and "This Love of Mine." Roland Hanna joins the group for the first three selections, and Elvin's brother, Hank for the last four. Of the Hanna tracks, Charles Mingus's "Love Bird" stands out, while Hank Jones' crisp and inventive lines shine on the classic bop of "Anthropology" and Ellington's "Fantazm."

Originally released in 1957 on the Bethlehem label, this obscure album shows Charles Mingus exploring new territory with his sextet while incorporating vocals into his work. On the opening track, "Scenes In The City," Mel Stewart performs a spoken word piece written by actor and playwright Lonne Elder III and the legendary Langston Hughes. The track is a snapshot of Harlem and NYC in the 1950s and for that alone this album stands out in the Mingus repertoire. Although the rest of the album features no spoken word or poetry, the performances here are top notch.

Composer and bass player Charles Mingus recorded East Coasting for Bethlehem in 1957, in between such classics as Tijuana Moods and Mingus Ah Um. Throughout his long career as a bandleader, drummer Art Blakey very rarely played with big bands. This Bethlehem date was a one-shot affair, an opportunity for his powerful drumming to be heard propelling a 15-piece orchestra through a set of mostly new material. With arrangers Melba Liston and Al Cohn and such soloists as John Coltrane (who is also featured on two quintet numbers), trombonist Jimmy Cleveland and trumpeters Donald Byrd and Ray Copeland, this was a mighty band indeed!

Although Milt Jackson, John Lewis and Kenny Clarke had been playing together since the mid-'40s as the rhythm section for the legendary Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, it was not until 1951, with the addition of Percy Heath, that they became the Modern Jazz Quartet. Experimenting with many styles, including bebop and Cool Jazz, they became perhaps best known for their formal presentation (in tuxedo) and choice of venues (concert halls), in a self-professed attempt to make jazz "serious," like classical music. Although their debut LP released in 1952 as a 10" is now a classic in jazz, the music still feels very immediate and features the earliest versions of their best known compositions. This version also features extra tracks from 1952-1954.

This album is composed of three different sessions. The first session was recorded at WOR Studios in New York in May of 1953 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, John Lewis on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and piano, Percy Heath on bass and Max Roach on drums, while the second session was recorded at New York's Beltone studios in March of 1954 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. "I'll Remember April" was recorded at a third session the following month at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Dave Schildkraut on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. All three sessions hail from Miles' Prestige period which stretched from 1951-1955.

Over the course of several months at the legendary Station Inn, Sunday Night Shout! became a staple of must see entertainment for the people of Nashville and beyond. Mike Farris working off the critical acclaim and strength of his 2007 INO/Columbia debut Salvation In Lights, created a musical and spiritual celebration that combined traditional southern black gospel mixed with Stax R&B and old fashioned roots music into a sound that has become uniquely his own.

Backed by a solid 10 piece band including the old time sound of the McCrary Sisters this powerhouse left all who saw it moved and energized for the weeks to come. Many musical guests would appear each week to showcase their songs under the tableau of this funky and soulful environment and on more than one occasion found themselves caught up in the whole spirit of emotion regardless of any religious belief. The Mike Farris experience can only be realized live and this recording over a period of 4 Sunday nights is a testament to that. This music is not limited or defined by any one genre as evidenced by his audience that ranges from the teen to the baby boomer.

Mike Farris & the Roseland Rhythm Revue spent the majority of 2008 performing at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Creation, Austin City Limits Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Cornerstone in addition to his sold out residencies in Nashville. In the spring of 2009 Mike and the band will resume the next wave of Sunday Night Shout! residency gigs and will hit the summer festival circuit.

The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now."

Freddie Redd is a name that every jazz collector should know. During 1957-60, he recorded three memorable albums: San Francisco Suite (a trio date for Riverside), The Connection (his score for the famous play) and Shades Of Redd. While he has spent much of the time in obscurity since then, with occasional comebacks, Shades Of Redd is the obvious highpoint of the pianist-composer's recording career. Redd wrote the music specifically for the two mighty horn players featured with his quintet (altoist Jackie McLean and tenor-saxophonist Tina Brooks). While Redd's fine piano playing is an outgrowth of Bud Powell's, his writing style was always quite original and it clearly inspired the two contrasting saxophonists when they met up in 1960. Filled with the optimism of the era and looking forward to freer sounds but staying closely connected to swinging hard bop, this formerly rare gem hints at John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman while sounding very much like Freddie Redd. No jazz collection is complete without Shades Of Redd.

This reissue of MoodSwing is Joshua Redman’s third recording as a band leader and his first featuring all-original compositions. The young saxophonist sought to change what he believed to be the public perception of jazz, a largely academic and overly intellectualized form of music devoid of the emotional themes that drive many other genres. As he explains in the original liner notes, jazz was seen as, “an elite art form, reserved for a sophisticated intelligentsia who rendezvous in secret.” With MoodSwing, Redman makes the case that jazz can be an accessible musical medium that could evoke basic and visceral emotional reactions.

From the playfully coy “Chill” to the urgent energy of “Rejoice,” Redman offers up a communicative and inspired record of emotional diversity. Joining him in this task was a young band of his peers, all of whom have since become established and esteemed figures in jazz. MoodSwing was one of the first exposures the jazz community had to young pianist Brad Mehldau, then beginning his career in Redman’s quartet. Mehldau anchors these compositions behind Redman’s lyrical playing, occasionally stepping out front to show his talents in “The Oneness of Two” and “Past in the Present.” The band’s rhythm section has since been recognized as one of jazz’s best, with Christian McBride on bass, and then little-known Brian Blade on the drums. Ella Fitzgerald was in prime form during her 1960 tour of Europe and her Berlin concert, which opened the tour, won her critical acclaim and two Grammys (Best Female Vocal Performance (Single) and Best Vocal Performance (Album). It's most remembered for her hilariously inventive performance of "Mack the Knife," during which she forgot the lyrics and substituted her own without losing stride. In early 1965, just as the West African High-life scene was starting to get repetitive, the revolutionary sound of Fela Kuti & His Koola Lobitos burst upon us. A strikingly original and very talented musician, Fela was trained at the Trinity College of Music in London and despite his primary instrument being the trumpet, he was an excellent pianist, composer, arranger and vocalist. To maintain his reputation as West Africa's leading musician, Fela continuously experimented with varying forms of High-life and other exotic rhythm patterns. This is the very first full length album by Fela, recorded in 1965.

A direct link to the styles of Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, veteran stride pianist Ralph Sutton is featured here, at 61 years young, in an elegant showcase of traditional jazz music. After early training with Jack Teagarden and Eddie Condon, Sutton continues to carry the flame, here partnered with a legend in his own right, Milt Hinton on bass. The quartet is completed with Australian brothers Bob and Len Bernard on trumpet and drums respectively. This 1983 session, with it's great live feel, will catapult the listener to a table "down front" at The Famous Door, 52nd Street circa 1941. Despite various reissue formats over several decades, the seven original LPs contained in Thelonious Monk -- The Riverside Tenor Sessions stood perfectly well on their own at the time of initial release and remain among the highest achievements of a truly golden age. Recorded and released between 1956 and 1961, these seven Monk combo albums were critical in Monk's emergence from a decade of ridicule and neglect to his status at the pinnacle of the jazz pantheon. It is the first of two Riverside albums derived from the legendary final appearance of the first Bill Evans trio - taped during the last day of a Village Vanguard engagement, barely ten days before the tragic death of bassist Scott LaFaro. Bryan's honesty in her approach to song writing has created a stylization that defies category. Neon Angel is a unique and personal body of work. In it, her lyrics are visual and socially relevant, yet intimate, poetic and immediate. Her music ranges from the ethereal to a plaintive earthiness, and at times both expressions are grasped in the same moment. This recording is as classic and as powerful as Joni Mitchell's legendary Blue.

The setting for Nancy's songs is specific, yet timeless. Blame It On The Moon is a Southern swamplife spiritual sung against an undulating bass line. Pulse and Time is as light as whipped cream in the confluence of dobro, ukulele and D-tuned acoustic guitar. And you can almost see the cold blue November sky behind a silhouette of skyscrapers in the melancholy Chicago Skyline and feel the singer's loneliness as her soaring vocals cry out for an irredeemable past.

Neon Angel was recorded live, direct-to-two-track at Blue Heaven Studios, the converted 77-year-old church in Salina, Kansas. This 13-song, all-acoustic album emphasizes the church's natural acoustics, bringing to life the massive, vaulted ceiling and Nancy on the altar.

Though this is only her second solo release, Nancy has won acclaim for several songs she's written and sung for Disney, including a track for the Grammy-nominated and now-gold record Take My Hand. Her songs have also appeared on MTV's popular shows The Real World and Road Rules.

Every track on this record is naked and essential and is an equally integral part of a brilliant mosaic.

Jordan and Gilmore were big guns in Chicago and unknown elsewhere when they made this album with the dream team of Horace Silver, Curly Russell and Art Blakey. Jordan would become a kingpin of the New York hard bop scene and Gilmore would immerse himself in the world of Sun Ra, but these tenor masters were completely in sync for this great Blue Note session.

What's remarkable about Introducing The 3 Sounds is how the trio's lightly swinging sound arrived fully intact. From the basis of this album, it sounds as if pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins and drummer William Dowdy have been playing together for years. There's empathetic, nearly intuitive interplay between the three musicians and Harris' deft style already sounds mature and entirely distinctive.

New Soil wasn't the first session Jackie McLean recorded for Blue Note, but it was the first one released, and as the title suggests, the first glimpses of McLean's desire to push beyond the limits of bop are already apparent. They're subtle, of course, and nowhere near as pronounced, as they would be in just a few years' time, but – as with the 1959 material later issued on Jackie's Bag – hints of Ornette Coleman's stream-of-consciousness melodic freedom are beginning to find their way into McLean's improvisations. His playing is just a touch more angular than the ear expects, especially given the very bluesy nature of pieces like McLean's 11-minute vamp, "Hip Strut," and pianist Walter Davis Jr.'s infectious boogie-woogie "Greasy." Coleman's influence is most apparent on McLean's "Minor Apprehension," where the freewheeling, Coleman-esque main theme is paralleled by trumpeter Donald Byrd in a definite nod to Don Cherry.

Although a Blue Note regular at the time on sessions by Donald Byrd, Art Blakey and others, Walter Davis made only one album for the label. With Byrd, Jackie McLean, Sam Jones and Art Taylor, he explores six of his finest compositions. Davis possessed the ability to write music that was funky and catchy, but still progressive, which explains why he was one of Art Blakey's favorite pianists and composers. "Minor Mind," "Make It" and "Millie's Delight" are among the album's highlights.
