This unique session contains five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne. Both "Take the 'A' Train" and "Cherokee" find the group at times playing two tempos at once and showing that they had heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, "Avalon," was previously available only on a sampler while "Me and Some Drums" features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet with the veteran tenor making his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. The set is rounded out by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises.

See You At The Fair Ben Webster $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Ben Webster's final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the U.S. and would soon permanently move to Europe. Joining Webster on this fine quartet set is Hank Jones and Roger Kellaway on piano, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Osie Johnson. Webster's tone has rarely sounded more beautiful than on "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Our Love Is Here to Stay."

Art Blakey discovered and championed young talented musicians such as Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Keith Jarrett and Wynton Marsalis to name but a few. But he also delivered the "message" of hard bop through thousands of performances at festivals right down to the smallest club. Lively, joyous performances, the very highest technical standards and somnambulistic music-making characterize this recording. Right from the very start it is clear that these jazz ambassadors have a new message for us. The hard-beat recordings win in lyricism thanks to the gentle sound of Curtis Fuller's trombone, something that was often missing in the powerful Blue Note sound. Four jazz evergreens give the musicians the time and opportunity to display their soloistic talents. The real climax, however, is to be found in the harmonic layering of the three winds which lend the themes new appeal. The message was broadcasted many times until the death of Art Blakey, but the history of jazz would have been a great deal poorer without these milestone recordings on the Impulse label. Art Blakey certainly knew how to delight his audience with fire, originality, a wealth of ideas and great humor. All these attributes are applicable to the six titles on this album.

Today And Now Coleman Hawkins $49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl - 2 LPs Sealed PRE-ORDER
Coleman Hawkins recorded three sessions for Impulse Records in the early to mid '60's. Of the three, Today And Now is the most compelling and the unusual choice of repertoire is what sets the album apart. The Hawk plays with an abandon that is altogether effortless throughout and his versions of the traditional song "Go Li'l Liza" and the fairly obscure Quincy Jones ballad "Quintessence" are creatively rendered. His band consisting of pianist Tommy Flanagan, bass player Major Holley and drummer Eddie Locke, back the tenor king here with a similar imaginative approach. A largely impromptu session, each song develops and evolves with each chorus, and it would serve as one of Hawkins' last great records.

2. Quintessence
3. Don't Love Me
4. Love Song From 'Apache'

Coleman Hawkins' last strong recording finds the veteran, 43 years after his recording debut with Mamie Smith's Jazz Hounds, improvising creatively on a wide variety of material ranging from adventurous versions of "Out of Nowhere" and "Wrapped Tight" to "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" and "Indian Summer."

In 1955, Louis Armstrong, along with vocalist Velma Middleton, got into the studio to pay tribute to the late Fats Waller. Armstrong's trumpet is superb and his voice carries the good-time spirit of Waller's music.

Those familiar with the dense, percussive style that pianist McCoy Tyner has cultivated since the 1970s onwards may be surprised by what they hear on Inception. Like Reaching Fourth and Nights of Ballads and Blues, this album gives listeners the chance to hear what a very young Tyner sounded like outside the confines of the classic John Coltrane quartet of the early '60s; it reveals a lyrical approach to jazz piano that seems a far cry from Tyner's mature style. The choice of material is fairly evenly split between modal pieces like "Inception" and more harmonically involved tunes like "Speak Low," and the pianist's treatment of both demonstrates the extent to which his early work was rooted in bebop. Tyner had yet to develop the massive orchestral sound and highly distinctive vocabulary of modal licks that would mark his later style, and throughout this album he spins dizzyingly long and singing lines with an exquisitely light touch. The irresistible rush of forward momentum that he maintains on tracks like "Effendi" and "Blues for Gwen" is breathtaking, and there is an exuberant, almost athletic quality to much of his solo work. Bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones provide superb accompaniment throughout, and they lay a solid rhythmic foundation for Tyner's sparkling melodic flights. The pianist's penchant for drama, which asserts itself more strongly in his later work, is on brief display in the original ballad "Sunset"; his skills as an arranger, though evident on several tracks, are perhaps best illustrated by the intricate contrapuntal treatment of "There Is No Greater Love."

McCoy Tyner, in his third album under his own name, vividly illustrates he is one of those rare jazz musicians with the kind of creative talent that bridges the gap between erudite jazz and lyrical commercial appeal. Out Of The Cool Gil Evans $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
This is the Gil Evans Orchestra that made its initial appearance at the Jazz Gallery in New York City toward the end of 1960. After having experimented with many different instrumentational formats, Gil has settled on this one as affording the most flexible outlet for his musical ideas. His taste for developments in all music is evidenced by his choice of material, his selection of personnel and by his compositional style. While some composer-arrangers in the jazz field tend to over-write in proportion to the time they spend and the techniques they learn, Evans seems to be headed in the opposite direction. Always aware of the importance of the improvised solo, his supporting material is never over-bearing.

Dear John C. Elvin Jones $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed PRE-ORDER
Elvin Jones was nearing the end of his long stay with John Coltrane when he led these sessions in 1965, and while the style is small-group post-bop, the music is very different from the thick textures of the Coltrane quartet. The core band is a trio with the Charlie Parker-influenced alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and the brilliant bassist Richard Davis. Mariano soars overhead on a series of lyrical standards, including "Everything Happens to Me" and "This Love of Mine." Roland Hanna joins the group for the first three selections, and Elvin's brother, Hank for the last four. Of the Hanna tracks, Charles Mingus's "Love Bird" stands out, while Hank Jones' crisp and inventive lines shine on the classic bop of "Anthropology" and Ellington's "Fantazm."

It was also the first album on any label to showcase what came to be known as the classic John Coltrane Quartet. That group, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, established itself in its four years of existence as one of the most influential ensembles in jazz, and one of the most popular as well. Originally released in 1957 on the Bethlehem label, this obscure album shows Charles Mingus exploring new territory with his sextet while incorporating vocals into his work. On the opening track, "Scenes In The City," Mel Stewart performs a spoken word piece written by actor and playwright Lonne Elder III and the legendary Langston Hughes. The track is a snapshot of Harlem and NYC in the 1950s and for that alone this album stands out in the Mingus repertoire. Although the rest of the album features no spoken word or poetry, the performances here are top notch.

Although Milt Jackson, John Lewis and Kenny Clarke had been playing together since the mid-'40s as the rhythm section for the legendary Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, it was not until 1951, with the addition of Percy Heath, that they became the Modern Jazz Quartet. Experimenting with many styles, including bebop and Cool Jazz, they became perhaps best known for their formal presentation (in tuxedo) and choice of venues (concert halls), in a self-professed attempt to make jazz "serious," like classical music. Although their debut LP released in 1952 as a 10" is now a classic in jazz, the music still feels very immediate and features the earliest versions of their best known compositions. This version also features extra tracks from 1952-1954.
This album is composed of three different sessions. The first session was recorded at WOR Studios in New York in May of 1953 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, John Lewis on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and piano, Percy Heath on bass and Max Roach on drums, while the second session was recorded at New York's Beltone studios in March of 1954 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. "I'll Remember April" was recorded at a third session the following month at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Dave Schildkraut on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. All three sessions hail from Miles' Prestige period which stretched from 1951-1955.

Many musical guests would appear each week to showcase their songs under the tableau of this funky and soulful environment and on more than one occasion found themselves caught up in the whole spirit of emotion regardless of any religious belief. The Mike Farris experience can only be realized live and this recording over a period of 4 Sunday nights is a testament to that. This music is not limited or defined by any one genre as evidenced by his audience that ranges from the teen to the baby boomer.
Mike Farris & the Roseland Rhythm Revue spent the majority of 2008 performing at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Creation, Austin City Limits Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Cornerstone in addition to his sold out residencies in Nashville. In the spring of 2009 Mike and the band will resume the next wave of Sunday Night Shout! residency gigs and will hit the summer festival circuit.

Way Out West Sonny Rollins $14.99
Vinyl LP Reissue - Sealed
Mastered off the original 2-track tape recorded with a tube AKG-C12 microphone on a tube Ampex 350 machine. Features Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics.
The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now."
Mastered by Doug Sax.
"Way Out West is a piano-less trio - another va-va-vivid Roy DuNann production - with Rollins spinning quirky geometric patterns through odd standards like 'I'm an Old Cow Hand.'" - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's "Best-Sounding Jazz LPs")
1. I'm An Old Cowhand
2. Solitude
3. Come, Gone

Freddie Redd is a name that every jazz collector should know. During 1957-60, he recorded three memorable albums: San Francisco Suite (a trio date for Riverside), The Connection (his score for the famous play) and Shades Of Redd. While he has spent much of the time in obscurity since then, with occasional comebacks, Shades Of Redd is the obvious highpoint of the pianist-composer's recording career. Redd wrote the music specifically for the two mighty horn players featured with his quintet (altoist Jackie McLean and tenor-saxophonist Tina Brooks). While Redd's fine piano playing is an outgrowth of Bud Powell's, his writing style was always quite original and it clearly inspired the two contrasting saxophonists when they met up in 1960. Filled with the optimism of the era and looking forward to freer sounds but staying closely connected to swinging hard bop, this formerly rare gem hints at John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman while sounding very much like Freddie Redd. No jazz collection is complete without Shades Of Redd.

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Originally released on Prestige in 1957, this is the third LP from NYC street performer and avant-garde/minimalist composer Moondog. Perhaps the least accessible of his early releases, this album is made up of percussive jams, usually on instruments of his own creation, street sounds, poetry, and Far East melodies, despite opening with a swinging number that is, oddly, the most bizarre thing on the album. Another classic from Moondog reissued with its original Andy Warhol artwork.

This reissue of MoodSwing is Joshua Redman’s third recording as a band leader and his first featuring all-original compositions. The young saxophonist sought to change what he believed to be the public perception of jazz, a largely academic and overly intellectualized form of music devoid of the emotional themes that drive many other genres. As he explains in the original liner notes, jazz was seen as, “an elite art form, reserved for a sophisticated intelligentsia who rendezvous in secret.” With MoodSwing, Redman makes the case that jazz can be an accessible musical medium that could evoke basic and visceral emotional reactions.
From the playfully coy “Chill” to the urgent energy of “Rejoice,” Redman offers up a communicative and inspired record of emotional diversity. Joining him in this task was a young band of his peers, all of whom have since become established and esteemed figures in jazz. MoodSwing was one of the first exposures the jazz community had to young pianist Brad Mehldau, then beginning his career in Redman’s quartet. Mehldau anchors these compositions behind Redman’s lyrical playing, occasionally stepping out front to show his talents in “The Oneness of Two” and “Past in the Present.” The band’s rhythm section has since been recognized as one of jazz’s best, with Christian McBride on bass, and then little-known Brian Blade on the drums. As the follow-up to his breakout Wish, MoodSwing was universally praised by critics and enjoyed commercial success and many of these compositions are still featured in the saxophonist’s live sets today.
Track Listing:
1. Sweet Sorrow
2. Chill
3. Rejoice
4. Faith
5. Alone in the Morning
6. Mischief
7. Dialogue

By the time this LP was released, Sonny Rollins already had such albums under his name as Worktime (OJCCD-007-2) and Sonny Rollins Plus 4 (OJCCD-243-2), in addition to his sideman exploits with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. Tenor Madness, in which he was joined by the rhythm section from the Miles Davis Quintet, further substantiated and underlined his rapidly rising stature. The material is an effective mixture of Rollins' playing attitudes with an intriguing original, "Paul's Pal," and the mining of unusual material such as "My Reverie" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." And, of course, there is the celebrated title track featuring the two titans to emerge in the '50s, Rollins and his guest, visiting in the studio that day, John Coltrane.
Track Listing:
1. Tenor Madness
2. When Your Lover Has Gone
3. Paul's Pal
4. My Reverie
5. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

Yes, who else? Can you imagine Hollywood's best 1950's musicals without Norma Jean's voice, or late 1950's comedies without her incredibly charismatic and sizzling humor. Maybe you're stuck with her Playboy's centerfold when she was not yet famous, but don't get tricked: Norma Jean was much, much more than that. You don't get so much attention from Camelot, anyway, if you're not a magnetic diva like she was. These tunes, taken from the motion pictures she starred in, or simply resulting from “staged” happenings like the infamous, 'nude look' performance of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" that still generates some heart failures, are some of the best performances of this never forgotten lady, also known as the quintessence of men's desire.
