Miles 1954 Miles Davis $29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
After playing cool jazz for a few years, Miles Davis recorded an album called Walkin and hard bop was born. The year was 1954. Hard bop was still slower than bebop, but more driving than cool jazz. Where cool jazz is sometimes referred to as chamber jazz, hard bop brought in elements of R&B and gospel. The Walkin album is now considered to be one of Davis most important albums, with his all-star rhythm section playing behind him, Horace Silver on piano, and the one-two punch of Kenny Clarke on drums and Percy Heath on bass delivering the goods, as they always did. Heath and Clarke went on to do another important session that year with Davis, but in addition to Horace Silver on piano there was another genius of the ivories, Thelonious Monk. This, of course, was the infamous Christmas Eve session, which eventually became two albums, Bags Groove (based on Milt Jacksons theme), and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants. These two albums are important because they are one of the few instances of Davis and Monk playing together. 1954 was also a significant year because it was Davis last year in relative obscurity, the following year he played, Well You Neednt at the Newport Jazz Festival and the rest is history. All this happened in 1954.
The double 180g album Miles 1954 collects Davis' seminal releases from that prolific year into one package, combining all the tracks from the landmark albums Walkin', Bag's Groove and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants.

Although Milt Jackson, John Lewis and Kenny Clarke had been playing together since the mid-'40s as the rhythm section for the legendary Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, it was not until 1951, with the addition of Percy Heath, that they became the Modern Jazz Quartet. Although they were very popular, experimenting with many styles, including bebop and Cool Jazz, they became perhaps best known for their formal presentation (in tuxedo) and choice of venues (concert halls), in a self-professed attempt to make jazz serious, like classical music. This collection of recordings from 1954-55 completes the enhanced version of their first 10" and offers an exemplary overview of the combo's beginnings.

Through his work as producer, composer, arranger and consummate session man, New Orleans native Allen Toussaint has truly earned living-legend status. Hes collaborated on landmark recordings for such artists as Ernie K. Doe, Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, the Meters, the Pointer Sisters and Labelle and released acclaimed albums of his own. The 70 year-old pianist, already a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, was the recipient, on the recent Grammy Awards telecast, of the Recording Academys prestigious Trustee Award, honoring a lifetime in the studio, both behind the scenes and in front of the mic.
On The Bright Mississippi, his Nonesuch debut, Toussaint continues to break new ground with his first jazz-oriented set, displaying the same effortless swing and relaxed charm he brought to his classic rock and roll sides. He salutes Big Easy stars of a previous generation, the jazz greats who, in the early 20th century, built the genre from the ground up and turned the ears of the world to New Orleans. Backed by an all-star combo that sounds like a group of old friends, Toussaint reinterprets classic jazz and blues tunes popularized or written by such New Orleans greats as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe King Oliver, as well as pieces composed by fellow travelers Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. He accedes the producers chair to trusted friend Joe Henry, who sat behind the board for Toussaints contributions to Our New Orleans, Nonesuch Records best-selling 2005 benefit release aiding hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast. Henry also produced The River In Reverse, Toussaints 2006 post-Katrina collaboration with Elvis Costello.
Henry assembled a decidedly non-traditional band of backing players for The Bright Mississippi, assuring a fresh take on such venerable tunes as West End Blues, St. James Infirmary, and Dear Old Southland. Joining Toussaint for four days of sessions at Manhattans Avatar Studio were guitarist Marc Ribot (Costello, Tom Waits), bassist David Piltch (k.d. lang), clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant /Alison Krauss, Sam Phillips). Nonesuch label-mates Brad Mehldau (piano) and Joshua Redman (saxophone) stopped by for one tune each.It was wonderful, says Toussaint of these convivial sessions.
Everything is live, of course. This isnt the kind of assembly line music where somebody put the wheels on here and somebody put the top on there. Everything got done at the same time, so everybody fed on eachother, their personality and tonality.

John Coltrane's 1964 release, Crescent brilliantly represents the musical values 'Trane' was reaching for at a very crucial time in the tenor legend's career. The album not only re-emphasizes Coltrane's expressive power as a composer, it further underlines the fact that his lyricism is as direct and as free of posturing as any in jazz history. In excellent support here are Jimmy Garrison on double bass, Elvin Jones on drums and McCoy Tyner on piano. Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Analog Master Tapes and pressed on double 180g 45RPM vinyl. Only 1000 Numbered Limited Edition Copies!

Dial "S" for Sonny, Sonny Clark first session for Blue Note Records and his first session as a leader, is a terrific set of laidback bop, highlighted by Sonny Clark liquid, swinging solos. Sonny Clark leads a first-rate group -- Art Farmer (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Wilbur Ware (bass), Louis Hayes (drums) -- through four originals and two standards, balancing the selections between swinging bop and reflective ballads. There are traces of Bud Powell in Sonny Clark style, but he's beginning to come into his own, developing a style that's alternately edgy and charmingly relaxed. Hank Mobley, Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller have their moments, but Sonny Clark steals the show in this set of fine, straight-ahead bop.

If ever there was an LP to study the perfect art of swing tenor sax playing, then this must be it! In the '60s, fans of a rich, full sound coupled with a flowing style must have been thrilled when this LP by Ben Webster and his associates appeared on the market. Leonard Feather called the trio "heavy weights" and their massive sound certainly matches their corpulence. While it is difficult to single out just one of the musicians, it is easy to distinguish them: Ben (called "The Brute") plays with a raspy, vibrating sound; Coleman (known as "The Bear") is a master of flowing swing; and Budd has an earthy, resonant bluesy sound. The five numbers reflect the jam-like spontaneity of the 1959 session; an Ellington classic by the three in a masterful, inspirational new interpretation; three pieces which are intrinsically ad hoc improvisations; and a classical ballad in which Ben Webster breathes warmth and sentiment into his instrument.

Starry Starry Night Paul Clarvis And Liam Noble $34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
A charming little beauty, Starry Starry Night is a collection of cover versions of mainly familiar material by drummer Paul Clarvis and pianist Liam Noble, two characterful lights of the British jazz scene. The tunes range from classic standards like Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo," the Gershwins' "Embraceable You" and Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag," through to more recent treasures like Gillian Welch's "Dear Someone," Don Maclean's "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" and Moondog's "Paris." The album is as intimate and seductive as the source material and instrumentation promise, Clarvis and Noble are respectful of the composers' original intentions, rarely straying far from the top-lines or basic changes, but the duo bring fresh fascination to even the most well-worn item. Clarvis and Noble met, propitiously, when they both worked in the band put together to accompany composer and multi-instrumentalist Moondog at a London concert in the 1990s. They've since performed and recorded together frequently, and followed singular paths of their own. Clarvis leads the quirky world jazz and folk band Orquestra Mahatma, and has become an in-demand session drummer. A master technician who wears his virtuosity lightly, Clarvis is an unusually melodic drummer. Among his several involvements, Noble, who is equally at home in the lyric songbook tradition and the most uncharted free-improv, performs and records with folkish jazz singer/songwriter Christine Tobin and with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock. His playing on Starry Starry Night is rhapsodic and vivacious. Given the nature of the material, it might be expected that much of the interest on the album would derive from Noble's performances. But Clarvis, heard throughout on brushes, holds his own. He transposes the melody and rhythmic emphases of "Embraceable You" to the drum kit to create one of the highlights of the album. Others are Welch's "Dear Someone," an exquisite "last waltz" with a suggestion of menace in the wings; Ellington's "Mood Indigo," which Noble succeeds in making both spectral and lush; and Moondog's infectiously joyous "Paris." But these are highlights amongst highlights, and Starry Starry Night is a seamless stream of pleasure.

You Won't Believe Your Ears: Half-Speed Mastered Sound from Original Master Tapes is Remarkably Lifelike
Brecker's Last Work: Saxophone Legend's Grammy-Winning 2007 Album is an Acknowledged Masterpiece
Jazz Doesn't Get Better Than This: Limited Edition Pressing Will Test the Limits of Your System
Pilgrimage is the last album saxophone colossus Michael Brecker ever recorded. Released just months after he succumbed to leukemia in January 2007, its also the late instrumentalists hands-down best workand truly, one of the finest jazz records made during the past 30 years. Winner of two Grammy Awards (Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for Anagram), Pilgrimage ranked #2 on the DownBeat critics poll and topped many year-end lists. And for good reason.
Nothing short of transcendent, the music soars on the resplendent playing of an astonishing quintet of jazzs heaviest hitters: pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, drummer Jack DeJohnette, guitarist Pat Metheny, and bassist John Patitucci. No, it doesnt get better than this. Mobile Fidelity is honored to offer this glorious statement on a sonically spectacular half-speed mastered 180-gram 2-LP set that, like Breckers swan song, is without equal. You will not believe your ears.
Devoid of melancholic emotion and self-pitying moods, Pilgrimage is a joyous affirmation of lifean invitation to embrace possibilities rather than a sad farewell. The performances are mesmerizing. None of the musicians here can do wrong, particularly the leader, whose solos both weave melodic yarns (The Mean Time) and create harmonic contrasts (Five Months From Midnight).
Realizing that these sessions would be his last, Brecker's mates match his passion and soul. Absolutely essential listening, Pilgrimage is the energetic sound of John Coltranes legacy, the culmination of a visionary talent high on the upbeat rhythms of life. You will feel better about everything in your world after hearing this album.
On its own terms, Pilgrimage is a stunning achievement: 77 minutes of compelling original music that never loses its edge, solos that soar, dynamic group interplay that communicates wonderfully in the universal language. Steve Greenlee, Boston Globe, May 2007
Half-speed mastered from the original tapes and lovingly pressed onto supremely quiet 180-gram vinyl, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition 2-LP set of Pilgrimage presents the entire tonal spectrum of the music amidst a wide, deep, natural soundstage. This is one of the best-sounding albums you'll ever hear. High and low frequencies are free of limiting ceilings. Instrumental separation and imaging are stunningly lifelike. Natural dynamics and details abound. Waiting for a truly great and great-sounding modern jazz album? This is it. Pilgrimage gets our highest recommendation.

The Thelonious Monk Quartet with Charlie Rouse lasted 11 years. October 31 and November 1, 1964 at the It Club in Los Angeles showcase Monk at particular high point pianistically; in fact, he went into a Los Angeles studio and recorded the album Solo Monk on the afternoons preceding and following the live taping. He is in full force throughout, but his playing is particularly superb on the standards "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and the previously unreleased "Sweet And Lovely."
The band plays standards, many of Monk's famous tunes, a few lesser known items like "Gallop's Gallop" and "Blues Five Spot" and the recent compositions "Teo" and "Bright Mississippi." Propelled by Gales and Riley, Monk and Rouse deliver amazing 10-minute excursions on such Monk classics as "Nutty," "Rhythm-a-ning" and "Blue Monk."
Rouse in his sixth year with Monk had hit his stride, truly becoming Monk's musical alter ego. Remarkably, drummer Ben Riley had joined the quartet at the beginning of 1964 and bassist Larry Gales had only logged in a month at the time of this taping; yet they already show the first signs of collective greatness on these evenings.
Mosaic has returned to the original three-track tapes and mixed them down to beautiful sounding analog stereo masters, presenting the six sets they played that night as they happened.

Out To Lunch Eric Dolphy $49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP 45 RPM - 2 LPs Sealed
In the history of jazz, Eric Dolphy was the first innovator to develop a strikingly original yet different voice on three instruments: alto-sax, flute and bass clarinet. When Dolphy burst upon the New York scene in 1960, he already had over a decade of experience. Originally influenced most by Charlie Parker, Dolphy was part of Los Angeles' Central Avenue scene in the late 1940s. Virtually nothing was heard of him on records in the 1950s before he joined the Chico Hamilton Quintet in 1958, but by then he was ready for the big leagues. His associations with Charles Mingus and John Coltrane along with his series of dynamic recordings for Prestige gave him attention. His speech like solos on alto (which featured wide interval jumps), his pioneering of the bass clarinet as a solo instrument and his flute playing which was inspired by the sound of birds marked him as a major innovator and a true original. His playing was consistently emotional, often-jubilant and always full of passion.
Out To Lunch from 1964, his final studio album before his premature death at the age of 36, has long been considered one of his greatest statements. Not only is Dolphy heard at his most explorative and inventive on each of his instruments but he contributes five very original compositions including an unusual Thelonious Monk tribute ("Hat And Beard") and the eccentric "Straight Up And Down." Utilizing quite an all-star group that features Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and a teen aged Tony Williams, Dolphy maps out a future for jazz that he would never live to experience. One can hear bits of such future greats as Oliver Lake, Anthony Braxton, Bennie Maupin, David Murray and James Newton in Dolphy's playing and writing but, truth be told, there was only one Eric Dolphy. Out To Lunch is his last masterpiece.

Herbie Mann established himself as jazz's most popular flutist for over a decade, and in doing so he also solidified the flute's rightful place in jazz. In 1962, his live album Herbie Mann at the Village Gate was his first major success, selling over half a million copies and making him a true superstar.
The first track on the LP, "Comin' Home Baby," placed in the Top 30 on the pop charts and became Mann's first big hit. Composer Ben Tucker plays second bass on that cut, and Mann's other sidemen include vibraphonist Hagood Hardy, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, drummer Rudy Collins, and Chief Bey and Ray Mantilla on percussion. Next are two great Gershwin songs. Mann's version of "Summertime" deserves a place in any collection. Last is the long "It Ain't Necessarily So," clocking in at almost 20-minutes. Mann's smart solo on the track wails and the crowd goes wild as the flute rises up from the rhythm section over and over.
Here it all is: a base of bebop with the Latin beat, but also Middle Eastern and African influences. There's funk on this album, there's cool, and Bossa Nova and samba. At this legendary moment in Herbie Mann's career, it all held together, and it just swings.

Tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley's smooth tone and hard-swinging style helped define the Blue Note sound. He was considered such a valuable musician by Alfred Lion that Mobley led 25 Blue Note albums during 1955-70, also appearing as a sideman on many others. Part of the Philadelphia jazz scene by the late 1940s, Mobley moved up North in 1951 and worked with Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, and most significantly the original versions of the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet. He was also in the Miles Davis Quintet in 1961. However he will always be best remembered for his string of brilliant Blue Note recordings of which 1960's Roll Call stands at the top. Mobley is heard at his most fiery, matching wits with the young upstart Freddie Hubbard, who was already an incendiary force. Such song titles as "My Groove, Your Move" and "A Baptist Beat" lets one know that Mobley's originals are full of their brand of soul, and the roaring drum rolls of Art Blakey often set the entire session on fire.

Prior to 1959, Jackie McLean was an important young Turk whose sharp tone and intense style on alto grew out of Charlie Parker yet were very much his own. Growing up in New York, his neighbors included such friends as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. By 1951 he was recording with Miles Davis and other associations in the 1950s included Charles Mingus and two years with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. But all of that was a prelude to his recording 21 brilliant, explorative and frequently explosive albums for Blue Note during 1959-67. While McLean became one of the first jazz musicians of his generation to stretch beyond hard bop into freer explorations inspired by Ornette Coleman, Swing, Swang, Swingin' is a straight ahead affair in which he mostly puts his stamp on standards. Few versions of "Let's Face The Music And Dance" and "I Love You" have ever had this much intensity and, when McLean digs into the ballad "What's New," he gives it a fiery passion that had never been heard before. Jackie McLean not only swings and swangs but he burns with the urgency, agony and ecstasy of the 1960s.

Patterns In Jazz Gil Melle $49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Gil Melle was a 20th century renaissance man, a unique individual with wide interests and many talents. In his life he wrote over 125 film scores, was a pioneer in experimenting with electronic music, built computers and synthesizers, was a notable painter, piloted planes, restored automobiles and airplanes, and was a visual artist whose art was used on the cover of records by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk. Musically he never stood still or fit easily into any category. Early on Melle was a highly skilled baritone-saxophonist with his own sound and approach, performing at the Village Vanguard before he was even old enough to have a drivers license. Patterns In Jazz from 1956 is Gil Melle's definitive straight-ahead jazz recording. The music is colorful and adventurous, laidback but eminently approachable. Teamed in a quintet with trombonist Eddie Bert and guitarist Joe Cinderella, the emphasis is on low tones, bright colors and surprising patterns, whether on Melles originals or inventive rearrangements of Moonlight In Vermont and Long Ago And Far Away. Blue Note engineer Rudy Van Gelder seemed to have a special affinity for Melles music since all of the Melle sessions recorded in Van Gelders studio are sonically exceptional, including this one. The music on this rare gem is as unique, unusual and memorable as is Gil Melle himself.

A giant of modern jazz, John Coltrane played in Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra, with Eddie Vinson's band and most notably with Miles Davis. He inspired and influenced many younger musicians with his distinctive and often adventurous playing. This quartet was formed in 1961.
When John Coltrane was asked, "Why a ballads album?", he said "Variety." Meaning a change of pace. And perhaps he wanted to apprise those who haven't discovered that he can be lyrical. John played the tunes straight, in the in-choruses, unless you count his lovely phrase endings as deviations from melody. When the development occurred, he made his musical points quickly and succinctly. I'd never heard him play this tightly. - Gene Lee (liner notes for Ballads)

1965 was one of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations that were full of passion and fury. Just two months after recording A Love Supreme, Trane began recording an album of outside material heard here on The John Coltrane Quartet Plays. Features the classic quartet's stirring versions of the standards "Chim Chim Cheree" and "Nature Boy" along with the Coltrane originals "Brazilia" and "Song of Praise."
