Du Jazz Dans Le Ravin Serge Gainsbourg $24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed PRE-ORDER

Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991): the original bad boy of French pop, the man all women wanted and all men wanted to be. He updated the French chanson and made it hip again, infusing it with the youth culture of the late 50s and 60s: one that was ruled by jazz, drugs and free love. The music of Gainsbourg heralded in this new era and his earliest songs became the soundtrack for a generation of Parisian youths. Side A features songs that originally appeared in 1959 on his second album (here in stereo), “No. 2”. Here Gainsbourg fronts the Alain Goraguer et Son Orchestre on songs like "Le Claqueur de Doigts", a song about seducing chicks at a jukebox....a standard operating tactic for Gainsbourg! While side B features material from his 1958 debut, “Du Chant a la Lune!”, which featured early hits like “Le Poinconneur Des Lilas” the morbid tale of a Paris Metro ticket man who contemplates suicide to free him from the monotony of his life. Tracks 1-3 on side B were recorded live at the “Theatre des 3 Baudets” in November, 1958, while tracks 8-10 are taken from Gainsbourg's score for Jacques Doniol-Valcroze's 1960 film “L'Eau a la Bouche” (A Game for Six Lovers). While it has always been somewhat difficult for English audiences to appreciate Gainsbourg, due to the language barrier that keeps us from fulling appreciating the sharp wit and raunchy innuendos that permeate his brilliant lyrical style, I find that if I allow the music to carry me to the world of 1960s Parisian vice, my imagination can fill in the rest!

True Blue Tina Brooks $49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Tina Brooks’ star burned with intense brightness before disappearing in the same tragic manner of too many other bop players of the time. Many jazz fans missed Tina Brooks’ recordings, the best of which were extraordinary by any measure. A soulful hard bop tenor-saxophonist with a sound of his own, Brooks (1932-74) had a brief life. Most of his better known recordings as a leader and sideman took place during a four year period from 1958-61. Unsung at the time, Brooks is now considered a true giant of the art. Brooks’ passionate and full sound and forward-looking style, along with his exceptional compositional gifts, combined to make him a powerful force. True Blue has become one of the most sought-after Blue Notes of all time. True Blue, along with the LP Back To The Tracks, contains most of Tina Brooks finest moments on record. Recorded in June of 1960, True Blue showcases Brooks along with the young firebrand trumpeter Freddie Hubbard in a set of highly inventive originals. Driven by an all-star rhythm section, True Blue is exhibit No. 1 for proof of Tina Brooks’ majestic sound and soulful writing prowess. For many aficionados of the Blue Note label, Tina Brooks’ True Blue is the very essence of the Blue Note sound and feel.

Considered one of the great young pianists of the mid-to-late 1950s, Sonny Clark was practically the house pianist at Blue Note during 1957-62 before his premature death in 1963. He led seven albums for Blue Note during that time, appeared on many dates as a sideman, and recorded Cool Struttin, which is considered his main classic. Clark never recorded an unworthy chorus. His playing was full of joyful discoveries, constant swing, and an optimistic creativity that was indescribable and quite infectious. On Cool Struttin from 1958, Clark matches wits and inventive ideas with altoist Jackie McLean and trumpeter Art Farmer. Their four lengthy performances, which include Miles Davis Sippin At Bells and the exotic Deep Night, are filled with magical moments where the five musicians seem to think and create like one. The greatest jazz performances include moments like those heard on Cool Struttin , where the music has a life of its own beyond the individual players. The more one plays Cool Struttin , the more it is obvious that this is one of the truly essential Blue Note recordings.
Track Listing:
1. Cool Struttin'
2. Blue Minor
3. Sippin' at Bells

The pairing of Stan Getz and Chet Baker in 1958 in Chicago for an LP seemed like such a natural thing, both being golden boys enjoying their heydays with lyrically clean, brilliant solo styles. So it is odd that they teamed up in the studio only one other time, twenty-five years later, in their long careers. Which makes this a summit meeting to savor. Their playing on "I'll Remember April" is a study in contrasts: Getz's long lines against Baker's shorter phrases. Baker delivers his best solo here, keeping to a medium tempo, while Getz gives his all on his adaptation of "Cherokee," which he cranks up to a furious tempo. The proceedings are fueled throughout by a solid Chicago rhythm section rarely heard on Verve.

Side By Side Duke Ellington $34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
There’s only one guy who can make an alto saxophone sound like this and superlative after superlative come to mind when you listen to these nine numbers, which were recorded at the close of the '50s. The idea of scaling down Duke Ellington’s band for jam-session-like numbers is absolutely genial because it offers soloists great opportunities to display their artistry. And these wind musicians are the best of the best, masters of their instruments. We have Roy Eldridge, who influenced the transition from swing to be-bop and a modern style of trumpet playing; Harry Edison, whose light and airy Basie-swing style cannot be denied; and Ben Webster, who amalgamates both the Count’s and the Duke’s style of swing. And then there is Johnny 'The Rabbit' Hodges, whose natural feeling for rhythm and gentle tone is brought to optimal expression within this concept.
"Squeeze Me" and "Stompy Jones" both stem from the '40s and are often performed, but in this session they have been rejuvenated in a masterly fashion. The standard "Let’s Fall In Love" demonstrates Lawrence Brown’s highly personal sound on the trombone and then goes on to spotlight Roy Eldridge and Johnny Hodges, both of whom prove that they are at the very zenith of their artistic prowess. "Ruint" and "Going Up" provide a showcase for Johnny Hodges, while "Just A Memory" focuses on the gentle, sometimes rather sentimental sound of Ben Webster.
Just as exceptional is the recording quality of this LP. Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the two sessions, the reissue offers a excellent opportunity to pay homage to the Verve recording engineers.

Live In Paris Frank Sinatra $39.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Live In Paris is Frank Sinatra’s definitive concert album. Yes, there are many good ones—Sinatra at the Sands is also among the finest—but none better captures the essence of the singer’s voice, showmanship, and command than this 1962 session, which remained unreleased until 1994. Backed only by a sextet, the main focus here is on Sinatra’s peerless singing, phrasing, and style. Needless to say, the iconic crooner doesn’t disappoint.
It’s impossible to overstate the magnificence of the interpretations on this set. Looking for the ultimate renditions of “My Funny Valentine,” “In the Still of the Night,” “One for My Baby,” “Night and Day,” and “Ol’ Man River”? Search no more. Sinatra’s readings of these classics exceed his superb studio versions, as well as those that appear on other live albums. And consider the setlist: “The Lady is a Tramp,” “Come Fly With Me,” “Chicago,” “I Could Have Danced All Night.” Superb. And Sinatra is simply “on,” bringing a combination of swinging enthusiasm, reverent charm, and dignified emotion to standards. He triumphs with a powerful voice yet affected by the ravages of time and cigarettes.
Fans of Sinatra at the Sands should take note. Sinatra in Paris is much more intimate, with the scaled-down arrangements and small band allowing songs to bask in the glory of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ voice. Yes, Sinatra’s period onstage comments can seem crude. But they take nothing away from the sheer superiority of this recording.
Ever since its release, the lone drawback to Sinatra in Paris has been that of the inferior sound quality. Lament the shortcoming no more. Half-speed mastered from the original tapes and pressed onto two slabs of quiet 180-gram vinyl, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition 2-LP set lifts the veil on the music and allows it to soar with a richness, texture, openness, and presence that have until now gone missing. You will swoon over the improvements.

Not Too Late Norah Jones $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Clarity Edition - On Clear Vinyl
On this, her sophomore effort, Norah Jones shows how great a vocalist
she really is on tunes such as "Broken", "Wish I Could", "Sinkin' Soon"
and the title track "Not to Late" among others. Its not that Norah
hasn't always been a great vocal talent, it's that, on this record
she is more confidently
out in front vocally exhibiting a control of nuance that she is
famous for live. Would it be presumptuous to say she is securely the
top female Jazzy/Pop
vocalist on the strip, probably, but so what, she lives up to that
badge on this record. Firmly back to the "Come Away with Me" style
songs albeit even more
refined on songs like "My Dear Country", Norah and band are in the
groove on this release and it shows. On "Wake Me Up", Norah delivers
a stirring
Mary - Chapin Carpenter-ish performance accompanied by producer/band
member Lee Alexander on lap steel guitar. If there is any question
about my
assessment of this record, let me be clear, Norah delivers her most
solid and fluid record to date - I can't wait to hear it again -
excuse me while I flip the vinyl over!

Between 1967 and 1981 Detroit’s downriver neighbor Ecorse, Michigan had its very own Harry Smith. Set up in a basement on 18th Avenue, Felton Williams chronicled the musical lives of Ecorse’s citizens and issued them on the Solid Rock, Compose, and Revival labels. Compiled here are 24 of Williams’ most fascinating recordings, covering gospel, group soul, garage-punk, northern, jazz, and funk.
Also included is a DVD with over 200 sound recordings pulled from his archives and compiled into a digital tape vault. This allows you to dig deep into the endless hours of jam sessions, demos, sermons, rehearsals and studio outtakes. The DVD also has an engaging 30 minute documentary on the making of Downriver Revival and gives you further insight into Felton and the artists he recorded at Double-U-Sound.
