 Armstrong Meets Peterson
Louis Armstrong
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Just a glance at the original cover is enough the King of the Trumpet and the King of the Keyboard must have thoroughly enjoyed making this album back in 1957. Musical sparks obviously flashed right from the very first title. Well, thats not really surprising since the two musicians were the dream team of the Fifties, and only the producer Norman Granz, who had both artists under contract, could make that dream come true. Louis Armstrong is at the centre of most titles as singer, but his crystal-clear, brilliant trumpet sound had lost nothing of its fascination in the Fifties.
Naturally Oscar Peterson does not let himself be restricted to the mere role of accompanist hes far too genial, too full of imagination and technically accomplished for that. You Go To My Head, in the version as sung by Billie Holiday, can match hers any day, filled as it is with unspent freshness and clarity. This title provides a good example of how Armstrong and the Peterson Quartet breathed new life into the old war horses of the American Songbook and set new standards for the art of improvisation. Theres No You, in which Louis is joined by Herb Ellis, is a jewel of a performance and deserves special mention. The old MGM/Verve pressings often had the drawback that the high notes tended to hiss, which of course spoiled listening to Armstrongs voice. Luckily this defect has been ironed out in this new pressing.

 Out to Lunch
Eric Dolphy
$11.99
Vinyl LP Reissue - Sealed
|
Out To Lunch is one of Eric Dolphy's lasting classics and most forward looking statements featuring Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Tony Williams. Although Dolphy's reed playing is as amazing as you'd expect, the real surprise here is Hutcherson, whose vibes ring out with a cold harsh tone that provides the perfect edge to the set. Despite a large number of later recordings, he almost never hit this level again and it's his playing that gives the set such a unique sound. Includes the tracks; Straight Up & Down, Gazzelloni, Hat And Beard, Out To Lunch and Something Sweet, Something Tender. Out To Lunch is an innovative document by one of the most emotional, resourceful reedmen in jazz history.

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Charles Mingus
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Impulse, the new record company founded by Bob Thiele, was where Charlie Mingus made his musical home at the end of 1962. And with his very first album, entitled The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady, the double bass player produced a masterwork of the very highest order; this time it was his compositional talent rather than his instrument which was in the limelight. He added a good portion of rhythmic variety to the melodiousness of his hero Duke Ellington and then added a touch of politics, for even in 1963 slavery had by no means been fully abolished in American Society! That is the explanation for the title of the suite a harking back to African roots, the struggle for human rights for black people on all levels of political and cultural society, and a vision of Freedom Day!Though Charlie Marianos tenor saxophone is spotlighted soloistically, it is really the varying timbres and changes in tempo that make all 39 minutes of this LP a sheer pleasure to listen to.
But Charlie Mingus does not demand that his public merely sit and listen to his music; he wants them to get up and dance to it. No, its not ballet music more an inspiration for expressing oneself in movement.
The old Impulse pressings with their wonderful gatefold sleeves were almost always disappointing from a technical point of view because the LPs contained too much re-cycled vinyl. Now, after almost 40 years, we have the opportunity to bestow the studio technique with the recognition it deserves. This is the music that everyone always wanted to take with them on their desert island.

This 1960 trio date was pianist Parlan’s first of many great releases for Blue Note. The Pittsburgh native, who overcame polio as a child that left his right hand crippled, had gained some serious props with his contributions on two of Charles Mingus’ best albums the year prior (Mingus Ah Um, Blues And Roots), and was now ready to step out on his own. Choosing to tackle mostly standards, Parlan channels his idol Bud Powell’s classic trio dates with the able assistance of Blue Note regulars Sam Jones, bass, and drummer Al Harewood. The result is an eclectic mix, interpreting the works of Tadd Dameron, Duke Ellington, Milt Jackson, and Burke-Van Heusen plus a Parlan original, “Up In Cynthia’s Room”, which became one of his signature pieces. This Classic Blue Note Signature LP Reissue Series release was mastered and cut on Classic’s ALL TUBE MONO cutting system allowing the listener to hear the music as Rudy Van Gelder mixed and intended it to be heard – in PURE MONO with no “faux stereo” artifacts from using a stereo cutter head! As always this release features authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. Try and find an original that looks and sounds this good at any price!

Maybe not exactly the first Dizzy that comes to mind when discussing jazz, this Jamaican-born, British-raised trumpeter overcame whatever burdens that nickname may have wrought, to become a highly respected player in the New York scene. He enhanced that rep by recording some truly excellent albums for the Savoy, Blue Note and Prestige labels among others. Christened Alphonso Son Reece, his robust and passionate playing styles always seemed to inspire other musicians in his company. The contributions by the esteemed trio invited; pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor unilaterally match the front-mans fire and bold approach to each tune. Straight-ahead bop versions of American Song Book greats Our Love Is Here To Stay, Once In A While and (I Dont Stand A) Ghost Of A Chance standout, as does the Reeces original composition, Blue Streak. Another installment in the Classic Blue Note Signature LP reissue Series featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. Mastered and cut on Classics ALL TUBE MONO cutting system and cutter head makes this the definitive version of this LP and possibly better than impossible to find original copies!

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

John Coltrane's development as an improviser accelerated in the mid-1950s when he was with Miles Davis. During six months of 1957 with Thelonious Monk in a celebrated engagement at New York's Five Spot Cafe, it went into overdrive. Coltrane said later, Working with Monk brought me close to a musical architect of the highest order. I felt I learned from him in every way - through the senses, theoretically, technically. Because of the artists' conflicting contractual agreements, Jazzland (Riverside's sister label) was unable to capture the Monk quartet live a the Five Spot. Producer Orrin Keepnews managed to record three studio tracks that did not see the light of day until the sixties. Ruby, My Dear, Trinkle, Tinkle and Nutty let us hear what all the excitement was about. Off Minor and Epistrophy find Monk and Coltrane in a septet that included the great Coleman Hawkins. This record also includes Functional, an unforgettable Monk solo blues.

Sonny Clark was ubiquitous at Blue Note sessions and led a handful of great albums of his own along the way. Cool Struttin' has a wonderful after-hours feel, especially on the extended title blues and it is undoubtedly the highlight of Clark's prolific career. The recording opens with the aptly named title cut, as Clark's jaunty, forward-leaning piano drives the tune with crisp precision. The rest of the album is a sterling example of a late-50s, finger-poppin' bop session featuring a virtual who's who of Blue Note's then-rising young crop of hard-bop stars including trumpeter Art Farmer, saxophonist Jackie McClean, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. I have my two new Blue Note LPs here and as I sit writing this I am listening to the Dexter Gordon, WOW!sitting here listening to this wonderful music, just clean, no background noise, a black background, like the studio that they recorded this in, it is wonderful. The instruments coming out of the sound stage positioned as they were recorded, this is a real treat. Miller Steel, Acoustic Sounds customer
...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge. The 45 rpm pressings that I received were all super quiet with every last drop of resolution from the master tapes. I had almost forgotten just how good Paul Chambers and Phil Joe were together as the backbone of these groups. I've always loved this music but I didn't remember it sounding this good! Hank Mobley offers us some brilliant sax bits on one of Kenny Dorham's finest recordings, Whistle Stop and Dexter Gordon's performance blew me away as well. The biggest surprise were the Lee Morgan records. I suggest turning these up loud, since they possess unlimited energy and some hooks that will knock you out. Amazing! Just a small warning: Once you start playing these Blue Note recordings you will be hooked. The good news is that Acoustic Sounds is working on at least 20 more of these jazz gems. So make sure your turntable has a setting for 45 rpm, clean your stylus occassionally, and get ready to be transported to nirvana. - Dan Babineau, Tone Audio, No. 14 2008, www.tonepublications.com
I have just listened, in succession, to my mono and early stereo versions of each LP. I have purchased other similar reissues over the years, but find the engineering and pressing of this 45rpm/180 series to be superior to all to others. This is particularly since I find many new releases to be of inferior quality or handling during manufacture, despite being re-engineered and of heavier vinyl. Barry Paulson, Acoustic Sounds customer
Dexter Gordon connects immediately with the sublime rhythm section of Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on this, his second Blue Note album. The material ranges from Drew originals to pieces from Gordon's score for the Los Angeles production of The Connection to stunning performances of the standards The End Of A Love Affair and Smile.

Blue Note Reissue
How do these new deluxe re-issues stack up to the alternatives? Not surprisingly, the big difference comes from the 45-RPM cutting. The faster cutting speed creates greater dynamic range and the sense of more air around the instruments, which stand out in better relief and give that you-are-there feel. The tradeoff requires you to flip the record twice as often, a small price to pay for this level of enhanced realism. These new issues maintain that timbral accuracy and at the same time bring out the piano sound like never before, for the first time Blue Note re-issues sound right. Dennis D. Davis, Hi-Fi+, Issue 57

This album is unique within Lee Morgan's vast and rich Blue Note discography. With then current employer Art Blakey, band mate Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, the trumpeter abandons time constraints and stretches out on four, soulful, hard-bop compositions (the first and the last are by Cal Massey). These hard bop masters are constantly inspired by Blakey's explosive grooves.

Two weeks after Ike Quebec recorded his comeback album Heavy Soul for Blue Note, he was back at the Van Gelder Studio with the same band (Freddie Roach, Milt Hinton and Al Harewood), making a second album. The confidence paid off because It Might As Well Be Spring is every bit the classic the first album proved to be. Quebec's big-toned, vulnerable tenor playing is a thing to behold, as his heart-stopping version of the title tune, Lover Man and Willow Weep For Me attest. Easy Don't Hurt is one of his blues masterpieces.

Tokyo Blues, a quintessential mid-'60s Blue Note session, is Horace Silver's tribute to the Japanese people who have long supported his funky, Latin-flavored modern jazz. American jazz has always been wildly popular in Japan, and this album is Silver's homage to the many fans that he has encountered on various triumphant tours of the island nation. While Silver's trademark funky Latin/swing is at the forefront, the inspiration of eastern delights is clearly evident in all aspects of this grooving date.

John Patton, Grant Green and Ben Dixon were introduced to Blue Note by Lou Donaldson and quickly became the quintessential rhythm section for Blue Note's funkier session. They came together for this, John Patton's first album, with two of the label's tenor saxophonists Fred Jackson and Harold Vick. The double tenors and organ trio make an unbeatable combination for some soulful, swinging music. Lou Donaldson's undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, marks the point where the altoist began to decisively modify his heavy Charlie Parker influence and add a smoky, bluesy flavor of his own. The material is still firmly in the bebop style, and the mellower moments aren't as sleepy as some of Donaldson's subsequent work, so the album sounds vital and distinctive even as it slows down and loosens things up. What elevates Blues Walk to classic status is its inviting warmth. Donaldson's sweetly singing horn is melodic throughout the six selections, making even his most advanced ideas sound utterly good-natured and accessible. The easy-swinging title cut is arguably Donaldson's signature tune even above his late-'60s soul-jazz hits, and his other two originals, Play Ray and Callin' All Cats, are in largely the same vein.

Dexter Gordon considered this his finest album, and few would disagree. With the perfect rhythm section of Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins, this tenor giant reinvents standards like Three O'clock In The Morning, Second Balcony Jump and Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry and introduces his most famous composition, Cheese Cake.

Hank Mobley was a perfect artist for Blue Note in the 1960s. On this LP, which is a straight reissue of the 1965 session, Mobley is joined by trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins (a typically remarkable Blue Note lineup) for the infectious title cut, three other lesser-known but superior originals, plus Wayne Shorter's Venus Di Mildew.

...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge.

Green Street, recorded on April 1, 1961, was Grant Green's second Blue Note album as a leader and remains one of the finest albums of his prolific Blue Note output. This program of sultry, minor key music with a Brazilian tinge seems inspired by Ike Quebec, who was suffering from advanced cancer that would claim his life three months later. But here is big-toned, impassioned tenor is in tact. Quebec's take on the bossa nova craze that explored that year (1962) is more muscular than Stan Getz's and doesn't rely on the familiar Jobim and Gilberto songs of the day. He and Kenny Burrell solo on the sly, subtle rhythms of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo and Garvin Masseaux.

This session is a model of the emotionally intense ballad programs featured on Prestige's Moodsville subsidiary. The great Kenny Burrell receives a major assist from saxophone patriarch Coleman Hawkins (who is in exemplary early-Sixties form), Hawkins' rhythm section of the time (made up exclusively of natives of Burrell's hometown Detroit) and conga drummer Ray Barretto. The choice of material and variety of settings are inspired, with Burrell heard solo on No More, over just bass and drums on Guilty, in two different settings and on three titles by the full sextet. Each soloist is fully engaged throughout, with things shifting into even higher gear when Burrell and Hawkins converse on Montono Blues and I Thought About You.

A tireless showman and an underrated musical talent, Louis Prima swung his way to iconic status thanks to an irresistible, infectious sound thats appeal has translated across generations. Normally a swing artist, Prima's distinctive sound also encompassed New Orleans-style jazz, boogie-woogie, jump blues, R&B, early rock and roll, and even the occasional Italian tarantella. Regardless of what form his music took, it swung hard and fast, with a rolling, up-tempo shuffle beat. His greatest period of popularity coincided with his marriage to singer Keely Smith, whose coolly sophisticated vocals and detached stage manner made a perfect counterpoint to Prima's boisterous presence. A veritable greatest-hits album, The Wildest is an absolute gem in Louis Prima's catalog.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey re-emerges with their most mind-expanding album yet, Lil Tae Rides Again. The fearless trio from Tulsa, Oklahoma appeared for only a handful of tour dates and summer festivals in 2007. Rumors swirled among fans regarding the reasons for such scarcity. They simply went underground to create music on their own terms, in their own universe, on their own timetable.
The trio enlisted eccentric electronic music futurist Tae Meyulks to produce. He shared in the trio's vision to record an album awash in sprawling soundscapes, minimalist melodies and subliminal themes. Lil Tae Rides Again achieves its intent, an Eno-esque masterwork that offers a sustaining aura of psychedelic splendor. As on previous efforts, JFJO define themselves as a mercurial musical force in a constant state of re-imagining their creative horizons. The beauty in JFJO's self-definition is that they are utterly un-definable. Lil Tae Rides Again, but better still, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey rides again.

Considered one of his strongest Blue Note outings, Capuchin Swing basically forced McLean to bring in some heavyweights to help define and deliver his vision. First and foremost was Blue Mitchells forceful trumpet, chosen to counterpoint the leaders alto, that was in a feisty mood of its own throughout the sessions. Having Walter Bishop, Jr. on piano, Paul Chambers bass and Art Taylor banging skins frees the leaders mind of worry rhythm-wise, allowing him and Mitchell to co-explore new heights of interplay. The intensity on McLean originals such as Francisco, Condition Blue and the title tune are both riveting and sometimes draining, while Bishop contributes both Just For Now plus another dedication to the label founder, On The Lion. An excellent 1960 get-together with some fresh faces joining altoist LD. Long under-valued trumpeter Bill Hardman and especially pianist Duke Pearson assist in infusing probably more soul than even Donaldson expected into the arrangements. Augmented by Al Harewoods impeccable timekeeping and Sam Jones and Laymon Jackson splitting time at the bass, the result is a fine mix, with strong writing contributions all-around. Attention should be paid to the originals offered up by Donaldson (The Truth, Goose Grease), Parlan (Blues for J.P) and Hardman (Politely), as should the smooth takes on the commonalities Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise, The Man I Love and Its You Or No One. Lou Donaldson With The Three Sounds

A perfect pairing from 1959 of fellow Blue Note roster mates that result in one of Donaldsons finest pure bop sessions. The trio, anchored by pianist Gene Harris, is a cool departure from standard quintets the front man normally had been booking. Lous tenor is the focal point, front and center of course but the threesome, completed by Andy Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy behind the drum kit, takes a backseat to no one. With ample support and balance, they assist LD in re-defining Tin Pan Alley ditties such as Blue Moon and Three Little Words into hardened jazz romps while bringing plenty to the table on Donaldson originals such as Smooth Groove and Jump Up. The Horace Silver Quintet & Trio
$33.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed

Along with his Songs For My Father, Blowin The Blues Away constantly ranks as one of pianist Horace Silvers finest group of original compositions. For decades, only former band-mate in the original Jazz Messengers ensemble, Art Blakey, could match Silver in ears for talent and the feeding grounds their groups became, spawning players who later became jazz giants. The group assembled here is no exception. This exact line-up would eventually stay in-tack, becoming the incarnation of the first Blue Mitchell Quintet, with Chick Corea replacing Silver. The afore-mentioned Blue Mitchell along with Junior Cook on tenor, Gene Taylors bass and drummer Louis Hayes help Silver deliver a fine mix of tempos including the ballad Peace and the gospel/soul-tinged Sister Sadie, both of which became jazz standards. On The St. Vitus Dance and Melancholy Mood, Silver reverts back to his early trio days with confidence and imagination. As part of the Classic Blue Note Signature LP reissue Series this reissue was mastered and cut on Classics ALL TUBE MONO cutting system from tape head to cutter head and featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers.

Each had redefined the technical and expressive capacities of their respective instruments, displayed limitless melodic invention and rhythmic resourcefulness, and provided models of honest, unaffected soul. Their pairing occurred when Jackson joined Montgomery as a Riverside recording artist in 1961 and placed them amidst what amounted to the label’s house rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones. Included in the program of standards and originals is a classic line by each leader, Montgomery’s “Jingles” (one of three tracks also heard in alternate takes) and Jackson’s saucy blues “S.K.J.” The entire session is a model of relaxed, conversational blowing by five masters.

 Saxophone Colossus
Sonny Rollins
$19.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
One of the pivotal recordings in bringing about the widespread acceptance of Sonny Rollins as a major figure, Saxophone Colossus inspired critics to write scholarly analysis and fans to revel in the hard-swinging invention, humor, and tender-strength balladry. Up to this album, while most musicians recognized Rollins as one of the new influential forces in the jazz of the Fifties, most critics were carping at Rollins or damning him with faint praise. St. Thomas, a traditional West Indian melody which Mal Waldron remembered as The Carnival, was recorded by many artists after Sonny introduced it here, and it remains a jazz standard today. The contributions of Tommy Flanagan's elegant swing, Doug Watkins' steady lift and Max Roach's most musical accompaniment and soloing (hear Blue 7) make this a landmark album. Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray.

 Django
The Modern Jazz Quartet
$50.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP 45 RPM - 2 LPs Sealed
|
The Modern Jazz Quartets origins, like so much in postwar jazz, were in Dizzy Gillespies 1946 big band. Vibraharpist Milt Jackson often joined the rhythm section so that the four could perform as a quartet and give the brass section a rest from Gillespies demanding arrangements. Later, they worked as the Milt Jackson Quartet. In the early 1950s, they changed the name to the Modern Jazz Quartet and over the next three and a half decades were one of the most successful and acclaimed small bands in the history of jazz. The MJQ was a leaderless group, but John Lewis functioned as musical director and wrote much of the groups repertoire. Many of his compositions reflected musical traditions going back to Bach and the Italian renaissance. One of them, Django, the stately piece named for the virtuoso French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, became an instant jazz classic.
Django was one of the group's finest albums, and is a welcome addition to the re-issue market. While not audiophile grade recordings, these sessions provide quite good sound given their early provenance. Rudy Van Gelder recorded the later sessions, but the uncreditied 1953 session does not suffer by comparison. I compared the Van Gelder recorded sessions to the original 10 LP. The remastered LP wins hands down, the purity of the vibes being the most conspicuous evidence. I will return to this LP many times. Recording = 7/10; Music = 8/10 Dennis Davis, Hi-Fi+, Issue 43
The latest round of Acoustic Sounds Fantasy 45 series albums from Fantasys Original Jazz Classics catalogue, each reissued on two 180-gram LPs cut at 45rpm includes two mid-50s masterworksThe better part of Django was recorded the day before the Miles session, and John Lewis piano sounds fine and present, while Jacksons vibes seem a bit recessed which tells you who was in charge. Heaths bass, once again, is spot-on; you can smell the wood. Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, January 2006, Issue 158

 In San Francisco
The Cannonball Adderley Quintet
$49.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
The quintet on this LP was not the first operated by Cannonball Adderley. The gregarious alto saxophonist and his cornetist brother Nat had a band earlier in the 1950s. They formed it shortly after they burst onto the New York scene from Florida, but hard economic breaks forced them to disband and seek work elsewhere. Cannonball went with Miles Davis, Nat with Woody Herman. As the decade wound down, Cannonballs success with Davis and increased popularity with the public led him to think he was ready to retrieve Nat and again try leadership. He was right. The new Adderley quintet quickly became beloved of listeners in clubs across the country. Nowhere was it more enthusiastically received than at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. In the fall of 1959, Adderley called his producer, Orrin Keepnews, and said now was the time and the Workshop was the place to record the quintet live. Keepnews sprang into action. The result was this album, one of the most spectacularly successful and enjoyable live recordings in the jazz canon.
These master tapes, now owned by Fantasy (now part of the Concord Record Group) are in superb condition, mostly because jazz titles never sold in large numbers and Scotch 111 tape was almost indestructible and held the signal extremely well. Anyone thinking original Riversides were some kind of sonic holy grail, is pulling your stylus: these 45rpm reissues beat originals in most of the ways that count, in my opinion: they are more dynamic, by far, are pressed on better vinyl and offer greater transparency. No wonder certain titles from the first series are already collector's itemsI regret not having bought every Riverside title available to me at $1.98 back in 1964, just as thousands of jazz fans will regret missing out on these limited edition double 45rpm LPs from Analog Productions, so if you're even thinking about buying this one, get it while you can! Music = 9/11; Sound = 9/11 Michael Fremer, musicangle.com
Im a big fan of this series, and were now into the third set of 25 Jazz titles from the Fantasy catalogue (now owned by Concord) and re-issued by Chad Kassems Analogue Productions as 180g 45rpm releases. Issuing 45s with music on both sides makes so much more sense than single-sided releases. (Especially as they dont warp the way single-sided 45s tend to.) I love the work Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray perform with these tapes. Masters the pair!I can tell you that you wont get the sound quality and the quiet surfaces this recording offers for $50. The musicians here are playing spontaneously at the Jazz Workshop and youve got that club atmosphere going for you as well as the master players in the Quintet. Art Pepper
$50.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Art Pepper left a legacy of innumerable appearances on records, but his sessions for Contemporary always seemed to find him in the best company and in the best shape. Here his impassioned alto sax is appropriately applied to the compositions of six saxophonists, among them Benny Carter, Ornette Coleman, and Pepper himself. The presence of Jack Sheldon in a rare performance as a small-group trumpeter was another important factor in the album's success.
The soundstage is spacious and the imaging precise. Pepper is almost in the room (separated by only the thinnest of curtains); you can practically see the air swirling through his alto sax. Pete Jolly's piano is a bit closed-off (as if the lid were shut), but Jimmy Bond's bass thumps and Frank Butler's drumset smacks and sizzles. Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, March 2006
Art Pepper's 'Las Cuevas De Mario' is a wonderfully subtle and convoluted track, built entirely on a subtly insistent rhythm motif that's set up by the bass and piano, before the drums start to add accent and prompts. Against the background foundation Pepper's sax and Jack Sheldon's trumpet play beautiful chorus and call and response melodies. Superbly understated, there's a lot going at once yet the instrumentation stays sparse. A longtime collectible record Roy Gregory, Hi-Fi+, Issue 45

Another of the mid-1950s Ammons studio jam sessions for Prestige, Blue Gene lives up to its title by utilizing blues changes as the basis for three of its four selections. Pianist Mal Waldron wrote all these lines and the minor-key ballad, Hip Tip. Ammons was one of the most expressive saxophonists and, in Idrees Sulieman and Pepper Adams, he found soulmates among the other horns. Each man had jammed with Gene on Prestige previously.

The relationship between Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Brown goes back to the mid 1940s when Brown was the bassist in Gillespie's magnificent big band. Joe Pass and Mickey Rocker came along somewhat later. When he heard them, Dizzy understood immediately that they were worthy of admission into the inner circle of musicians whose artistic life was centered in the bebop tradition that he and Charlie Parker had established. The core of that tradition is perfectly expressed in this blistering version of Be Bop, a piece Dizzy wrote in 1942 that still tests musicians' ability to express themselves at high velocity. Gillespie's tender side and harmonic wisdom are disclosed in Hurry Home and September Song, his blues expressiveness in his classic Birks Works. Pass solos beautifully and rounds out a stunning rhythm section.

One of the best efforts from Ammons' extensive catalog. A fat, warm, rich sax tone - you know, the one you immediately identify as Jug - is on display in all its glory on this great Moodsville release.
Feeling tired and stressed out? Give Uncle Gene a spin. Besides perfect pitch, Ammons' other special gift was a melodic sense that allowed him to effectively convey feelings at slow tempos. John Coltrane brought a new sound and style to jazz, and he applied it in his own unique way to the standard material of the storehouse of American music gathered from Broadway, Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley. With the excellent rhythm team of Red Garland, Paul Chambers (both of whom had done so many concert, club and recording dates with him) and Jimmy Cobb and the Miles-directed flugelhorn of Wilbur Harden, Trane puts his personal stamp on numbers not done that often like Henry Nemo's Don't Take Your Love from Me, Fred Ahlert's I'll Get By and two more familiar yet still not overdone songs, Richard Rodgers' Spring Is Here and Bronislau Kaper's Invitation.

Of this set of 25 albums being doled out over the next year, this is my favorite title of the bunchThis is the place to start for music lovers who would like to explore something a little more avant-garde, but are not feeling comfortable enough to leap straight in at the deep end of the poolHoffman and Gray have spun gold with these tapesLike most of the titles in the Fantasy 45 Series, this new version takes the sound quality up a couple notches from the original. Top recommendation. Dennis D. Davis, Hi-Fi+, Issue 51
Dolphy had left his native California and come east as part of Chico Hamilton's group, settling in New York in 1960 and becoming part of Charles Mingus's group. This first recording as a leader brought comparisons with Ornette Coleman but the two were really parallel figures in the then-emerging avant-garde. Dolphy did not eschew changes, as Coleman did, but he used them in new ways. This LP was significant not only for his alto saxophone but introduced his individual approach to the flute and, particularly, the bass clarinet.

 A Dynamic New Sound
Wes Montgomery
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
When Cannonball and Nat Adderley heard Wes Montgomery in an Indianapolis after-hours club in the fall of 1959, Cannonball decided that this remarkable talent had to be exposed to the world. He then not so much persuaded, as ordered, Riversides Orrin Keepnews to record Montgomery. Soon, Keepnews flew to Indianapolis, listened, and signed Montgomery before the night ended. At the age of 37, this mild, teetotaling father of six was on his way to becoming the most influential jazz guitarist since Charlie Christian. What we hear on this SACD of Montgomerys first album is essentially what the Adderleys and Keepnews heard, Wes at the helm of his trio playing his thrilling, melodic single-note lines, revolutionary octaves and block chords. After 12 Riverside albums, Montgomery switched to another label and had huge commercial success. But it was during the Riverside period that he astonished the jazz world with his technique, musicianship and soul. This is the record that started it all.

Monk's second album for Riverside continued the label's initial plan to broaden his audience by the use of recognizable standard tunes instead of his somewhat frightening originals. Thelonious' uncompromising performances, along with major league support (Art Blakey and Oscar Pettiford) and strong material, helped to turn this concept into lastingly superior jazz. Particularly notable are Monk's sharp thrusts of humor on such well-worn pieces as Honeysuckle Rose and Tea for Two. The album's impact was strengthened by one of the most unique covers ever devised. Riverside went so far as to print near-postage-sized Monk stamps, quite a few of which reportedly found their way through the actual mail.

Shakey Jake - Mouth Harp Blues The late James Harris earned the moniker Shakey Jake due to his proficiency at dice, but he was equally adept at the blues game. The Arkansas-born, Chicago-based singer and harmonica blower traveled to Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio in November 1960 to record this, his second album for the Bluesville label. Jake brought along Jimmie Lee Robinson, the brilliant, fast-fingered guitarist best known for his work with Little Walter's band. Also making tasty contributions to the session was Robert Banks, the New York R&B and gospel studio organist who, in this case, ably appointed himself as a two-fisted blues piano stylist. Among the 10 selections is the distinctively loping Easy Baby, a tune also associated with Jake's nephew Magic Sam.
Guitarist Jimmie Lee Robinson, who died in 2002, was the soul of Acoustic Sounds' own APO Records. He was the first to record at Blue Heaven Studios, having made three records (one still unreleased) in the converted church, and he was there several more times to perform. A Chicago native and lifelong resident, Robinson began playing guitar in the open-air market on Maxwell Street in 1942 with the likes of Big Bill Broonzy and Robert Nighthawk. He later teamed with Freddie King for a four-year partnership and went on to play guitar and bass with Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Eddie Taylor, Elmore James, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Reed, Magic Sam and of course Shakey Jake.

Anyone who ever heard Count Basie launch his band into a blues with several choruses of effortless piano has lamented that there is far too little of Basie the soloist among his recorded legacy. This shortage was rectified to a certain extent by the trio albums Basie made with Ray Brown and Louis Bellson in the Seventies, of which this is the sequel to the For the First Time set of the previous year. Once again, Basies poetic introductions, precise calibrations of touch and coloration and definitive swing create a joyous program of four venerable standards and an equal number of new blues. Bellson is empathetic throughout and dances with his brushes on Sandman, while Browns robust tone and earth-moving walking lines bring out the best in Basie the soloist and accompanist.

To a great many people, the name of Charlie Byrd and the updated samba beat known as bossa nova will always be intertwined. The guitarist did play a most important role in the introduction into this country of the compelling Brazilian rhythm-first on that major hit with Stan Getz and then on his own Bossa Nova Pelos Passaros. But before, during, and after the craze, Byrd was capable of much more-a remarkable impoviser and a richly versatile in-person performer. Here are four tunes from one of the classic sessions of all time when a combination of giants gathered in Rudy Van Gelder's studio for a historic meeting on Christmas Eve afternoon, 1954. With Thelonious Monk and three-quarters of the Modern Jazz Quartet (Jackson, Heath and Clarke) as his accomplices, Miles blends sophisticated harmonic knowledge with raw, spontaneous invention to produce extraordinary music. The two takes of The Man I Love are quite different within their basic similarity.
The latest round of Acoustic Sounds Fantasy 45 series albums from Fantasys Original Jazz Classics catalogue, each reissued on two 180-gram LPs cut at 45rpm includes two mid-50s masterworksThe Miles session, Christmas Eve 54, was famously tense. Miles apparently yelled at Monk not to play during his solosEvery song, every bar, crackles with electricity. Miles solos, especially on Bemsha Swing, are explosively creativeJackson, freed from the MJQ chamber, storms the vibes with unmatched verve and precision. This was one of Rudy Van Gelders first recordings, and it already displays his hallmark traitsthe trumpet blares and the vibes gleam with as much fidelity as on any modern recording. And listen to those juicy high-plucked bass strings during Heaths solos. During his solo on The Man I Love, Monk loses himself and stops playing; Miles assists by playing a few notes of the theme. Hes off-mike, and you can hear those notes bouncing off the studio walls. Its a spooky, time-travel moment; youre there! Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, January 2006, Issue 158

 The Hawk Relaxes
Coleman Hawkins
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Despite the inherent modesty of its title, The Hawk Relaxes is far more than merely a tenor saxophonist albeit one of the greatest who ever lived at his ease. Recorded for Prestige's Moodsville subsidiary, the album presents Coleman Hawkins, paterfamilias of the tenor and one of its master balladeers. As he grew older, Hawkins often made it a point to perform with much younger musicians, in order to keep his work fresh. Pianist Ronnell Bright, 30 years old at the time of this recording, was the oldest of Hawkins' accompanists herein, while drummer Andrew Cyrille was, at just 21, the junior partner. With the multifaceted guitarist Kenny Burrell and bassist Ron Carter, at the dawn of what would be a ubiquitously brilliant career, rounding out a highly simpatico group, Hawkins adroitly weaves his way rhapsodically through seven timeless popular songs that lend themselves to his signature harmonic brilliance.

Jazz impression of Black Orpheus. In the early 60s, the Brazilian import called bossa nova swept through jazz. The music's most prominent composer was Antoinio Carlos Jobim, and his score for the 1959 motion picture Black Orpheus was packed with songs adopted by jazz musicians. Vince Guaraldi was one of the earliest to grasp the possibilities of bossa nova and recorded four of the Black Orpheus pieces in this 1962 album. He also played two standards and two of his own compositions. One of those originals was a pleasantly rhythmic little melody called Cast Your Fate to the Wind, which cut like a beam of sunshine through the pop music gloom of the day, beat the odds against quality music and illuminated the upper regions of the national sales charts for nearly half a year.

Red Garland and Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles' group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland's talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige's Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, and New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads and just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove.

 Blue's Moods
Blue Mitchell
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Blue Mitchell possessed one of the truly individual trumpet sounds: richly melodic but always strong clearly in the tradition of Clifford Brown, but very much his own voice. The series of Riverside albums that established him on the jazz scene, beginning at the end of the 1950s, usually presented him in at least three-horn ensembles; this was his only quartet set. Fully in the spotlight, Mitchell moves most effectively through a widely varied repertoire that covers standards, blues, originals and a Charlie Parker classic. There is flawless rhythm support from all-stars Wynton Kelly and Sam Jones and drummer Roy Brooks (Blues bandmate during part of his many years with the Horace Silver Quintet).

 The Sound of Sonny
Sonny Rollins
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Sonny Rollins was only 26 years old when he recorded this, his first Riverside album, but he was an eight-year veteran of the jazz big leagues. He had worked with Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Group, among others. His style, personal and eccentric but deeply rooted in the jazz tradition and in American popular song, made him the most talked-about young tenor saxophonist in the mid-1950s. Like all great jazz improvisers, he communicated through his instrument in a way that made listeners feel he was speaking to them. The stories he told were delivered with energy, swing and wry good humor. He gave the layman a frame of reference by using familiar material like the standard songs here for explorations full of excitement and adventure. Supported by a blue-ribbon rhythm section, this is young Sonny Rollins at his best.

You Get More Bounce With Curtis Counce
Curtis Counce
$49.99
45 RPM 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
In the 1950s, the Curtis Counce Group was the West Coast answer to the East Coast hard bop, epitomized by groups such as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet. The brilliant pianist Carl Perkins, an early casualty of the jazz life, and who Miles Davis once identified as his favorite pianist, was at the core of this exceptional band. Harold Land, who was fresh from the Clifford Brown/ Max Roach band, and who has gone on in the nearly forty years since this album was recorded to international acclaim, and the vastly underrated trumpeter Jack Sheldon round out the front line. The fiery Frank Butler (who the legendary Count Basie drummer Jo Jones once called the greatest living jazz drummer) and Kansas City native, Curtis Counce, who had had recent stints with Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Art Pepper and Gerald Wilson formed the rock-solid rhythmic underpinnings that propelled the band. Characterized by the solid musical concept and sound quality normally associated with Contemporary, this album is sonically, musically, and historically outstanding.

Rarely has a singer and a songwriter been so perfectly matched. Johnny Adams possesses one of the most remarkable and expressive voices in popular music today, while the late Doc Pomus wrote some of the most succinctly elegant and enduring songs of the rhythm and blues era. Johnny's interpretations of Doc's lyrics are as deep and true as the songs themselves. While this album may be regarded as a retrospective of Doc's work, many of the songs are new, written expressively for this project. The supporting musicians comprise a New Orleans dream band, with outstanding contributions from arranger/ saxophonist Alvin Red Tyler, guitarist Duke Robillard and pianist/ co-producer Mac Dr. John Rebennack.

The Definitive 45RPM Blue Note Reissue Series!
Jackie McLean's slightly acidic tone on alto can be instantly identified. He perfectly symbolizes the intensity, passion, excitement and urgency of New York in the 1960s. Born in 1932 and part of the musical generation that matured in the shadow of Charlie Parker, McLean served his apprenticeship at the very top, recording with the likes of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Art Blakey. However, Jackie McLean is best known for a brilliant series of Blue Note albums recorded from 1959-67. Bluesnik is, on the surface, one of McLean's most accessible recordings, since the six songs are all blues-based. However, McLean remains quite explorative here, clearly inspired by his excellent sidemen (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Pete La Roca). McLean stretches himself, showing every side of the blues. The results are exceptional to say the least. One listen to Bluesnik tells you that this is one of Jackie McLean's masterpiece recordings. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder was up to the challenge of this fine session, getting all of this passionate soul on tape with exceptional fidelity. Bluesnik is essential! Here on Limited Edition 180g 45RPM Double Vinyl.

This 1959 12 is made up of two distinct sessions, including Jackie McLeans first as a leader for the label. These sides helped establish him as one of the finest young alto voices on the jazz scene. Although a strong album through-and-through, the strongest material lay in the interplay between the altoist and the still under-appreciated tenor Tina Brooks. A great and unique alto/tenor tandem was born and sadly short-lived, due to Brooks demise at a young age. But the handful of selections they were able to create on this and a few other Blue Note releases are superb. Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, Sonny Clark, Kenny Drew and Billy Mitchell collectively make McLeans album debut, memorable. As part of the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Reissue Series this reissue was mastered and cut from the original analog master tapes on Classics ALL TUBE MONO cutting system and featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. Here To Stay
Freddie Hubbard
$49.99
180 Gram Virgin Vinyl 45 RPM LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
One of the acknowledged giants of jazz trumpet, Freddie Hubbard recorded many albums for Blue Note in the 1960s. Due to the incredible quantity and quality of Blue Note recording sessions in the 50s and 60s, several of Hubbards most stirring albums went unissued at the time. There were times when the reason for Alfred Lions decision to hold back a session were quite clear. But there were many others, such as this gem, where one can only gather that the Blue Note office, in the early 60s was simply too busy and chaotic to keep track of every session. Here to Stay, a true rare find, was first released as part of a two-LP set in 1979 after languishing in the vaults for over 15 years. It features a Hubbard in his early twenties, and most definitely in his prime. Freddie was a member of Art Blakelys Jazz Messengers at this time. In fact, the lineup of musicians is comprised of the Jazz Messengers of the day (with Wayne Shorter on tenor, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman) with drummer Philly Joe Jones filling in for Blakey. The music is fiery, brilliant and full of excitement, including a particularly memorable version of Body and Soul. Here to Stay is a hard bop rarity (now heard in stunning fidelity) from some of the top young lions of the 1960s. It is, quite simply, one of the most inspired albums of Hubbards career.

During the 1930s in the vast region of the American Southwest, particularly in Texas and Oklahoma, a younger generation gave birth to a new form of popular dance music. In the hard years of the depression, both rural enthusiasts who played by ear, and others who had basic notions of written music joined together and participated in the development of the so-called western swing. The elements which flow into this music are easily detectable on recordings by Western Swing groups, melting white and black swing across the country (Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, etc.), together with blues, fiddle music and ragtime, which was particularly strong in the regional heritage of Texas. This is the famous version of Porgy and Bess that was supposed to have Gladys Knight singing the part of Bess. When Ray Charles offered the part to Gladys, having just come of the hit Midnight train to Georgia, her manager at the time, would only allow her to participate if she owned the masters. According to Ray, he said, well now you know that just won't be possible to which her manager responded that she wouldn't be available. Ray told me that his mother taught him the meaning of NO and hence he asked Cleo Laine, who did a beautiful job of singing the part. Ray was also in top form as this 2 LP edition mastered from the original analog masters shows very clearly. Now available on 200g Quiex Super Vinyl Profile for the first time. A must have!

 Blues Walk (200 Gram)
Lou Donaldson
$34.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
An alto player originally deep-rooted in bop, who by the late fifties was beginning to shed his Charlie Parker influences and take a more bluesy/soul approach. Blues Walk, from a one-day session in July of '58 has attained unanimous five-star status with the title track itself becoming one the leader's signature tunes. Surrounding himself not with the usual all-stars found on many Blue Note dates from this period, Donaldson carefully chose his cohorts personally for their cohesiveness as a unit. Never one to engage frequently in wide-open blowing sessions, the results are powerful yet melodic and in one case, Autumn Nocturne, fairly romantic without causing full-blown diabetes. Mastered and cut from the original TWO TRACK master tapes (running simultaneously with the full track mono master) using ALL TUBE tape electronics and cutting system allowed Bernie BeBop Grundman to extract every nuance on the tapes which adds to the magic of this Rudy Van Gelder recording. This is the real deal and it is done perfectly from mastering through to the authentic laminated cover art (front only) to the deep groove in the center label. In a few cases, when the two track master is done just right as with this recording, Classic complements the MONO release with a stereo offering. If you have to choose one over the other, you should go for the MONO as this was Rudy's focus in mixing live to MONO but if you can't resist comparing the two versions recorded at the same time with the same equipment or you can get a deal, then buy both - you won't be unhappy!
Track Listing:
1. Blues Walk
2. Move
3. The Masquerade is Over
4. Play Ray
5. Autumn Nocturne
6. Callin' All Cats

A Night at the Village Vanguard
Sonny Rollins
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
Temporarily out of stock
|
Between March 1956 and November 1957, Sonny Rollins recorded two albums that would cement forever his rightful place as a jazz icon. Saxophone Colossus for Prestige in 56 would become a jazz masterpiece while the live trio recordings for Blue Note in late 1957 at the Village Vanguard would show another side of Rollins altogether. His some-what daring use of basically replacing the piano with his tenor, was not new for him nor, would it be the last time; his Way Out West in early 1957 was a breakthrough landmark and later, Freedom Suite in 1958 would be his return to the triad. Operating at his creative peak, Rollins was making the art of extended soloing his own and was able to both focus and stretch each song out in extemporaneous thoughts and whims. From an! aftern oon set he locked horn with bassist Don Bailey and drummer Pete LaRoca on the famous rendition of A Night In Tunisia. The evening set found the highly underrated Wilbur Ware on bass and the great Elvin Jones behind the skins, resulting in The Ol Devil Moon, Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise, Sonnymoon For Two, I Cant Get Started, and Strivers Row. Simply one of the greatest and most powerful live dates in the history of recorded jazz. Mastered and cut by Bernie Grundman on Classic's "ALL TUBE PURE MONO" cutting system (not like others who
use a stereo cutting head which imparts "crosstalk" onto the groove cut) and pressed onto 200 gram QUIEX Super Vinyl Profile for maximum fidelity. Jackets are authentic "tip-on" and laminated (front only) as were the originals - and the labels have the desirable "deep groove". Another installment in the Classic Blue Note Signature Mono LP Series.
Track Listing:
1. Old Devil Moon
2. Softly As in a Morning Sunrise
3. Striver's Row
4. Sonnymoon For Two

Signed to the label when he only eighteen years old, this jazz prodigy, who cut his teeth as a Jazz Messengers with the great Art Blakey, proceeded to record a stream of impressive records as a leader for Blue Note. At the ripe old age nineteen, Morgan helmed the City Lights sessions in August of 1957 at Rudy Van Gelders Hackensack site. The all-star sextet tackles arrangements provided by the likes of Benny Golson and Gigi Gryce that are a perfect fit to their collective playing. Curtis Fuller on trombone, George Coleman blowing both alto and tenor, Ray Bryant at the piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylors drumming add to Morgans trumpet that produced a classic of 50s modern jazz. Cut on Classic's all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie "be-bop" Grundman from

 Bud (MONO)
Bud Powell
$34.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
|
The third and quite possibly the best, of a trio of recordings for Blue Note that are considered a triumph for this tortured artist. One of the true architects of be-bop,
Powells recording history, like his personal life, experienced extreme highs and lows. Before moving to Europe, Blue Note was able to capture him in variety of groupings. This August 3, 1957 date from Rudy Van Gelders Hackensack studio is damn near sheer perfection. Trio-mates Art Taylor on drums and Paul Chambers bass offer the perfect compliment to Powells five original compositions, with an outpouring of swing, blues and improvisation. A unique choice of a complimenting horn finds a quite young Curtis Fuller on trombone on three standards. Powell adds a fun break in the action with his s! olo, ba roque-bop Bud On Bach. Cut on Classic's all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie "be-bop" Grundman from
the original full track mono master tapes and pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g Super Vinyl Profile. Another "must have" installment in Classic Blue Note Signature Mono LP Series.

2. Blue Pearl
3. Frantic Fancies
4. Bud On Bach
5. Keepin' in the Groove

Over his twenty-five year tenure on Blue Note, pianist Silver employed some great horn men to record with but arguably none blended better with his arranging than the group he assembled for this May 1957 session. Hank Mobleys tenor and Art Farmers trumpet become the right and left hands to Silvers body of work and set a standard for small-ensemble writing and playing. No slouches themselves, Teddy Koticks bass and Louis Hayes drum work help produce a stellar collection including a version of Home Cookin that became a jazz classic. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible.

 Bossa Nova Bacchanal (MONO)
Charlie Rouse
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed
Temporarily out of stock
|
Recorded in 1962 by Rudy Van Gelder at the Englewood Cliffs studio,
Rouse and Co. departed from the normal hard-bop that as Monks main tenorman he had earned his New York rep with and took the recent bossa nova / calypso craze, started by Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd and even Sonny Rollins to another place. With great grooves from the rhythm section, including augmentation with conga and chekere, the result is a great collection, rooted in various Afro-Caribbean styles and not American jazzmen trying to sound Brazilian. Among others, guitarist Kenny Burrells and especially drummer Willie Bobos playing makes this not just another bossa nova fad date. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible.

 Volume Two (MONO)
Sonny Rollins

Outside of Paul Chambers, who was employed as Miles Daviss bassist at this time, all of the other players on these April 1957 RVG Hackensack dates were leaders of their own renowned groups; a reflection of the respect they all shared for the date leader, Sonny Rollins. Besides Chambers, with J.J. Johnson on trombone, Art Blakey behind the drums and alternating pianists Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver, who both play on the now-famous version of Misterioso, the words All-Star seem almost demeaning to this conclave. The resulting recordings burst forth with confidence and enthusiasm, capturing a fire and passion usually found only with uninhibited live dates and not the constraints of a recording studio. Exceptional versions of Poor Butterfly and You Stepped Out Of a Dream elevate this record to monumental status. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible

2. Wail March

 The Magnificent (MONO)
Thad Jones

200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Mono LP - Sealed

Two separate sessions, from July 1956 and February 1957 make up this 12 release, recorded by RVG at his Hackensack studio. Trumpeter Jones decided to utilize two distinct groups of supporting players and the results are interesting contrasts in structure. Rounding out the quartet date with just a rhythm section of Barry Harriss piano, Percy Heath on bass and drummer Max Roach, Thads trumpet is the main focal point. On the quintet date, Jones adds Benny Powells trombone and Gigi Gryce on alto sax for the front line, with Tommy Flanagan at the piano, George Duvivier on bass and his brother Elvin banging the skins. Sharp, tight playing from both groups, especially on Ive Got A Crush On You and Ill Wind highlight this collection. Mastered and cut on an all tube pure mono cutting system by Bernie Grundman. Pressed on Classic's proprietary 200g super vinyl profile for the best and most authentic sound possible
Track Listing:
1. Slipped Again
2. Ill Wind

 At Large
Doug Watkins

200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Transistion was a very small and obscure Jazz label for about two seconds in the mid - Fifties but they did a couple of great Jazz records and Watkins
at Large is one of them. This is Watkins on bass as leader of a band consisting of Duke Jordan on piano, Arthur Taylor on drums, Kenny Burrell on Guitar,
Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Hank Mobley on tenor sax. Watkins plays a seven foot Italian bass on tunes including his own Panonica and a 13 minute
version of Tiomkin's Return to Paradise. According to Tom Wilson who produced the session and wrote the notes, Watkins at Large is one of those rare
sessions where everyone falls immediately into the groove from the opening minute. The result of such a 'hang-upless' date is freely constructed, intensely
personal jazz without pretention or frills. As always, this True MONO recording was transferred from the original full track Mono master tapes on Classic's
ALL TUBE, MONO cutting system - no Mono cut on a stereo lathe here. Pressed on Classic's 200g Super Vinyl Profile and presented with original artwork
and eight page booklet provided by Jeff Barr of Jeff Barr Rare records. This is a record that is so impossibly rare that if we didn't reissue it then most people
would never know of its existence. We got the tip on this gem from Ron Rambach who has helped Classic over the years to consistently choose winning Jazz titles -
Roe Baby this one's for you!

Sings Songs from the movie "Let No Man Write My Epitaph" is one of those rare recordings that is often overlooked because of its relative obscurity.
Of the thirteen songs recorded and presented on this LP, only three were actually used in the film. Ella is accompanied by Paul Smith on piano and is performs tunes
like "Misty", "Angel Eyes", "Black Coffee" and a host of others with breathtaking finesse and sensitivity. If you had to have one Ella Fitzgerald record, as everyone should,
this would surely be a worthy candidate. Transferred from the original two track analog master tape by Bernie Grundman and back for the first time on Classic's Quiex 200g Super

Monk Quartet with John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall
Thelonious Monk
$32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Temporarily out of stock

What is so grand about the Carnegie tapes is that those tunes Trane was struggling with (the first couple of weeks he was near-pitiful, with the heads, but Monk pounded away at the chords) - say, "Evidence," "Monk's Mood," "Epistrophy" which grew steadily more finished and exquisite during that Summer of wonder - by time of the concert a few months later, not only was Trane peerless with the heads, but now sailed off into his own furtherness and the band itself was tight as Dick's hat band.
Of even more curious delight is that one can see now how Trane's residency with that great band influenced the teacher as well. Check Monk's expansive backup arpeggio's on "Monk's Mood," matching Trane's multi-noted zoom. "Epistrophy" shows the exactness the well-honed match that playing together over an extended period can produce. - Amiri Baraka, liner notes
Jazz has had its share of great archival discoveries, not the least of which were Dean Benedetti's recordings of Charlie Parker. But the discovery of more music from the Thelonious Monk quartet with John Coltrane is made all the more extraordinary because so few knew it existed and the only official recordings by this band were made in its first weeks of existence.
Now a forgotten November 1957 Carnegie Hall concert taped by Voice Of America radio has been discovered by the Library of Congress with two appearances by the quartet.
These two 25-minute, five-tune sets feature the quartet in great fidelity and unbelievable form. The empathy and invention of the group here far surpasses the Riverside session, made months earlier. Playing together every night for 18 weeks sharpened the skills and interaction of these brilliant musicians. Monk's piano playing has never sound like this; his arpeggios are virtuosic and each note rings with clarity on the Carnegie Hall piano. Coltrane had fully mastered Monk's music by this time. In the confines of short playing times (most tunes are 4 to 6 minutes in duration), he plays with a fervid intensity trying to cram all his ideas into a brief amount of time. Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Shadow Wilson play the intricate arrangements with fluidity and push the soloists to great heights. Thanks to the clarity and presence of Wilson's drums on this recording, his work will be a revelation to anyone who had not had the fortune to see him live.
This LP was mastered from the original 15 ips mono analog tapes by
Kevin
Hodge at the Master Cutting Room and pressed on Classic Records proprietary 200 gram Quiex Super Vinyl Profile virgin vinyl.

One of the FIVE recordings the Basie Band made for its new label
in 1959 and in hindsight the one many call his best. By this time, stereo
recording had developed significantly and it shows in the spaciousness of

recorded in stereo and this original two track is BIG BAND Stereo! This one
gets top recommendations.
