Kenya Machito & His Orchestra $34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - LP Sealed
As its title implies, on this 1957 release, Machito turns an ear towards the African side of the Afro-Cuban jazz style he helped to pioneer. The energy level on Kenya is astounding, and there's virtually no let up all the way through. Under the direction of Machito and his brother-in-law/right-hand man Mario Bauza, the ensemble tears through a dozen cuts with such disciplined ferocity it's a wonder anyone was left standing at the end of the session. The electrifying big-band arrangements are typified by tight structures, forcefully executed ensemble lines, and of course, a percolating bed of percussion that keeps the groove constant no matter how sophisticated the harmonic intercourse becomes. From rhumba to bata to mambo, the rhythmic drive is invigorating. The contributions of non-Latin jazzmen such as Doc Cheatham and Cannonball Adderley only adds to the mix in this piping-hot musical stew.

Wave Antonio Carlos Jobim $34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Regard as one of the most artistic bossa nova records ever, perhaps because Jobim rides the gentlest of waves in this particular recording. While the large instrumental ensemble might lead one to suspect that sensationalism was the aim here, listening to the music proves that Jobim has remained true to his clear melodies and his simple, sensitive style. A relaxed carpet of sound is rolled out which enhances and refines the essence of Jobim’s musical roots, turning them into miniature tone poems.

With bossa simply everything goes and everything goes simply! A solitary voice, a simple wooden block or a solo guitar are all that are needed to conjure up the elementary forces of Brazilian music. But the great names didn’t necessarily love a one-man show with a nameless band in the background but often wrote recording history by getting their individual teams together and combining their creative powers. In Lalo Schifrin and Oscar Castro Neves, the guitar virtuoso and singer Luiz Bonfa had two top musicians at his side who all left their handwriting on this album. Schifrin worked on the large string arrangements while Bonfa put his pen to the songs for smaller ensembles. Well over the half of the numbers recorded here are by Bonfa, who even shared his work with himself in that he lent his voice to side one of the record and his instrumental skills to side two. And though he proves that he can go it alone, as in the popular 'One Note Samba', the less well-known but hear-worthy 'Samba De Duas Notas' tells us that with more of a crowd things get even better.

The Germans have their male-voice choirs, the French the musette, the Scottish the bagpipes, and the Spanish their fandangillo, solear and tango – or to put it more concisely – flamenco. This music is far more than just folkmusic passed down from generation to generation for it combines strict dance form with a free vocal melody and virtuoso guitar playing. Fame equal to that of a toreador is reaped by the few who have mastered this form of art.
Paco Peña and his Ensemble rank among these few, and it goes without saying that no recording studio in the world can do real justice to the fascination of flamenco. As the short sub-title “puro” suggests, this LP certainly lives up to expectations in encapturing an electrifying live atmosphere. Thrilling flourishes on the guitar, the sharp clack of the castanets, the rapid zapateados (heeltaps), and the typical, almost harsh singing are reproduced so clearly and spatially that one cannot help looking around to see where the musicians are standing. Those of a suspicious nature can be sure here that the “Phase-4” Process is anything but a publicity stunt.

Herb Albert Presents Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 $34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
“How about a Sergio Mendes Brasil ‘66?” Whoever greets this tempting offer with the words “No thank you, I don't smoke” is quite on the wrong track for we’re not talking about a select brand of cigar here. Imported from Latin America, this music is certainly black and powerful; and it exercises a strong impact on the nervous system and extremities when inhaled deeply. An addict’s symptoms are triggered off by a pleasantly mild and fragrant vocal fine cut grown in the tablelands; even when breathed in deeply, the rich bouquet given off by the rhythmic fermentation of the background is never pungent or overbearing. On the contrary: the mellowness will bring your day to a perfect end.
Needless to say, this quality blend, delivered in its natural cover(ing), really ought to be covered by the Drug Offences Act, for the longer one listens to the music, the greater the danger of becoming hopelessly addicted to it. Perhaps it would be wise to consult your physician – or dancing tutor or record dealer! Full enjoyment is however guaranteed.

2-LP Set of the Best Recorded, Best Performed Flemnco Guitar Music from the Mercury Vaults!
The Royal Family of the Guitar…The Romeros are a veritable institution in the world of classical music, a group that has dazzled countless audiences and won the raves of reviewers worldwide. World of Flemenco is an audiophile and a music lover's favorite! Celedonio Romero, founder and creator of The Romeros guitar dynasty, died in 1996. As the family says, the spirit of the quartet is him; his sons and grandsons continue Celedonio's legacy. This Mercury Living Presence record captures the quartet in its prime.
Released in 1970, this was the third album from Os Mutantes, the geniuses of wacked out Brazilian psychedelic rock. They may have been trying to pay homage to their better known icons back in the States, but in doing so they created something that went beyond all that until, 30 years later, they became the ones that everyone was trying to imitate. This album, further testimony to their limitless creativity and considered by many to be their best, was recorded during the height of the Brazilian military regime’s crack down on artists, and fellow members of the Tropicalia movement, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil had already been sent into exile in the U.K. Available here on 180g Import LP.

NEW 180G PRESSING EXPECTED IN MAY! ACCEPTING PRE-ORDERS NOW!
This is a beautiful collaboration between two brilliant guitarists that recalls the sound of late '50's/early '60's pop instrumentals with a Cuban jazz influence. Many of the ballads evoke the feel of classic slow surf-guitar instrumentals. The recording expertly captures the electric guitar sound cleanly and with great detail.
Ry Cooder is best-known these days for his monumental Buena Vista Social Club project but should also be remembered for his fabulous emotive soundtracks and his series of eclectic albums ranging from country to blues to Hawaiian music. This new album re-introduces the pianist, organist, and guitarist extraordinaire, Manuel Galbán. In the 1950's, he pioneered a tough, rocking guitar style full of reverb and bent notes that is considered by Cuban musicians to be unique in their music. More than the American pop-jazz of the time, this collaboration hearkens back to the futuristic creations of modern Cuban composers of the period.
Says Cooder, ''Galbán and I felt that there was a sound that had not been explored a Cuban electric-guitar band that could re-interpret the atmosphere of the 1950s with beauty, agility, and simplicity. We decided on two electrics, two drum sets, congas and bass: a sexteto that could swing like a big band and penetrate the mysteries of the classic tunes. This music is powerful, lyrical, and funny; what more could you ask? Mambo Sinuendo is Cuban soul and high-performance.''
For the album, Cooder has enlisted the bassist for all the Buena Vista Social Club sessions, Orlando Cachaíto López. The percussionists include longtime collaborator Jim Keltner; Cooder's son, Joachim Cooder, another Buena Vista veteran; and the conga master Miguel Angá Díaz.

The Grammy Award-winning 1997 release, Buena Vista Social Club was the biggest-selling world music album ever, with more than eight million records sold to date. The Cuban musicians from the album played a sold-out, one-night-only concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall on July 1, 1998. That show became the climax of the acclaimed 1999 Wim Wenders documentary about the musicians, also called Buena Vista Social Club. Ten years later, that evening’s performance is finally being released as Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall, meticulously mixed, edited and mastered by Ry Cooder and World Circuit label head Nick Gold (who executive produced the 1997 album). It features amazing performances by the original Buena Vista Social Club musicians including Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Ruben González, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, Cachaíto López and Guajiro Mirabal. Though all of these musicians subsequently went on to resurrect great solo careers, the intervening years have brought the loss of Ferrer, Segundo, and González. Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall is only the second release for the original members, whose legendary studio album became a phenomenon all over the world. This Double 180g Vinyl Version comes in Tri-fold double sleeve packaging with a gatefold Ivy Hill baby jacket that includes a bonus CD.
“The concert was more than a musical occasion. Musicians from Cuba in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, some emerging from retirement, were making their United States debuts at no less than Carnegie Hall. With the bittersweet delicacy of a classic bolero, the Buena Vista Social Club simultaneously celebrated the vitality and virtuosity of its musicians and mourned the era they embody.” - The New York Times

Shortly after Puerto Ricans were granted U.S. citizenship in 1917, they began moving into the uptown Manhattan neighborhood that would become known as Spanish Harlem. By 1930, Afro-Cuban music had gained a firm foothold in the city, setting the stage for the mambo, pachanga, boogaloo, and salsa scenes that followed. In this collection of profiles and essays, Max Salazar tells the story of the music and the musicians who made it happen, including Rafael Hernandez, Miguelito Valdes, Noro Morales, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Charlie Palmieri, Joe Cuba, Hector Lavoe, and many others.
Stereophile magazine senior contributing editor and analog expert Michael Fremer presents his almost three hour long Practical Guide to Turntable Set-Up. Fremer sets up three popular turntables from Pro-Ject, Rega and VPI. Using the hands-on phono cartridge installation techniques, tips and basic principles demonstrated with close-ups and flash animation, any turntable from the popular Technics SL-1200 to the most esoteric can be set up to perfection. Also included: an interview with famed Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino, and a 20 page PDF file embedded in the disc's DVD-ROM section that includes even more detailed technical descriptions and an article on record cleaning no vinyl fan should be without. Despite the seemingly dry subject matter, the disc is entertaining. There are even some laughs as Fremer once did stand up comedy (he played legendary Max's Kansas City and even opened for bands like Television and The Jam).

Whipped Cream & Other Delights was the best-selling album by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, spending 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Charts and an incredible 41 weeks in the Top 40. It features the # 1 single "A Taste Of Honey", which won three Grammy Awards and the title track, which became famous as the theme song for The Dating Game. Not to mention the eye-catching cover, which defined the era as much as the music on Whipped Cream did.

An accessible combination of serious study and exciting pop reference, THE LATIN BEAT explains each of the wildly varied Latin Musical forms--bossa nova, cumbia, merengue, tango, ranchera, rumba, son, salsa--in the context of the countries in which they arose (Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Domincan Republic, Mexico). Morales then traces each of these forms as they migrated north, and explains how they were absorbed into the American mix. He travels from the Latin ballad to the cocktail-lounge bossa nova to Latin jazz, chronicles the development of the samba in Brazil and salsa in New York, explores the connection between the mambo craze of the '40s and '50s with the Cuban craze of today, and uncovers the hidden history of Latinos in '80s and '90s rock and hip hop. THE LATIN BEAT explores where the music has come from, and celebrates all of the directions it is going.
