Metallica's debut album--originally released in 1983--is a masterpiece of thrash metal, and as good a marker as any for the debut of the genre. Originally the lyrics and musical landscape were sketched out by Lou for a theatrical production in Berlin, but after coming together with the 'Tallica boys for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York in 2009 all guilty parties knew they wanted to make more music together. Lou was inspired enough by that performance to recently ask the band to join him in taking his theatrical Lulu piece to the next level and so starting in early May of this year they were all camped out recording at HQ studios in Northern California, bringing us to today and ten complete songs.

Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to Fight Fire with Fire fool you, Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. This early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view; nuclear war on Fight Fire with Fire, electric-chair execution on Ride the Lightning and drowning on Trapped Under Ice. Interestingly enough, the best track on this album is probably Fade to Black, a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There's also Creeping Death, which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended.
