Cookin' was the first album to be released of the famed extended recording sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet, wherein they taped the band's basic repertoire (and what a marvelous mixture of jazz originals and standards) in the manner of nightclub sets rather than the repetition of the usual studio takes. The album excited listeners not only with its contents but with its promise of more to come. Davis, Coltrane, Garland, Chambers and Philly Joe Jones; one of the classic groups in the history of jazz. It established a level of excellence that was to foster a long, successive line of outstanding Davis quintets and sextets through the 50s and 60s.
From the muted eloquence of My Funny Valentine, through the finger-poppin' Blues By Five, to the urgent swing of Airegin and Tune Up, Cookin' has the ability to thrill the listener no matter how many times it is played - the mark of an all-time great performance.

Yes, that's right, "Kind of Blue", the most successful Jazz
album in history is back in print from Classic Records. To
commemorate the official introduction of Classic Quiex SV -
Super Vinyl, we thought it appropriate that "Kind of Blue"
should be one of the titles to debut on the new vinyl
formulation. We have also taken the opportunity to reissue
"Kind of Blue", as it should have been in 1959 - completely
at the proper speed!

Birth of the Cool Miles Davis $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
So dubbed because these three sessions two from early 1949, one from March
1950 are where the sound known as cool jazz essentially formed, The Birth
of the Cool remains one of the defining, pivotal moments in jazz. This is
where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful, big-band arrangements
and a relaxed, subdued mood that made it all seem easy, even at its most
intricate. After all, there's a reason why this music was called cool; it
has a hip, detached elegance, never getting too hot, even as the rhythms
skip and jump. Indeed, the most remarkable thing about these sessions
arranged by Gil Evans and featuring such heavy-hitters as Kai Winding, Gerry
Mulligan, Lee Konitz, and Max Roach is that they sound intimate, as the
nonet never pushes too hard, never sounds like the work of nine musicians.
Furthermore, the group keeps things short and concise (probably the result
of the running time of singles, but the results are the same), which keeps
the focus on the tones and tunes. The virtuosity led to relaxing, stylish
mood music as the end result the very thing that came to define West Coast
or "cool" jazz but this music is so inventive, it remains alluring even
after its influence has been thoroughly absorbed into the mainstream

This is Miles Davis' first Blue Note recording released in 1952 as a 10" LP with the title apparently borrowed from a 1950 movie of the same name starring Kirk Douglas. The line up on the six song LP features Jay Jay Johnson, Jackie McLean, Gil Coggins, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clark backing up the Young Man with a Horn. This record swings and the playing is obviously from a more romantic Miles trying to find his way. The authentic "deep groove" non-groove guard pressing in an authentic tip on jacket will fool even the best collectors. Cut on the newly restored Classic Mono Cutting System at Bernie Grundman mastering by Mr Be Bop himself! Even if you don't own a record player you have to have this record if you want to be cool.
Includes Mono 10" Disc 33.3rpms and 45rpms 12" QUIEX SV-P 200g double sided disc.
Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio on March 6, 1954, this was the emerging trumpeter's third session recorded for Blue Note. Originally released on a 10" pressing (BLP-5040), Classic Records is proud to once again make this collectable available in this original format. With the assistance of EMI/Blue Note, Classic has been given access to recently discovered original source materials on the Blue Note sessions and along with the upgraded sound, has painstakingly worked to deliver a high-quality 10" pressing and also faithfully reproduce the original 10" jacket. Original 1954 first-pressings in mint condition have been known to bring a minimum of $300.00 on the collector's market. The set features the leader Miles with some of his finest playing. His support includes Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey behind the drums. The original six selections include Take Off, Lazy Susan, The Leap, Well You Needn't, Weirdo and It Never Entered My Mind.

In a Silent Way Miles Davis $25.99$24.99

Miles Davis's famous mid-1960s quintet, featuring saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock, was intact until just a few weeks before his new, electric ensemble recorded In a Silent Way. Legendary as a kind of line in the sand challenging jazz fans during the ascendance of electric, psychedelic rock, In a Silent Way hinted at the repetitive polyrhythms Davis would employ throughout the early 1970s. It also partook generously of electric piano and bass and rekindled the tonal palette that Davis had explored famously with Kind of Blue. But In a Silent Way remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient color exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Davis takes many long, breathy solos, and they glisten in a burnished blue against his new group's strange admixture of musical moods.
In a Silent Way is a one of kind record that mixed the late-'60s pop and underground movement into the jazz realm. On this record Miles began to hook into the late '60s sounds that flowed from the bands in San Francisco. They would never make a record like it again, an absolutely timeless work that proves that Miles Davis and crew were some of the most innovative thinkers in modern music.
Featuring John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The greatest small group in the history of jazz recorded at their peak in 1956. Featuring joyous, straight-ahead swinging and melodic improvisation, this is a near-perfect album. Contains 'If I Were A Bell,' 'It Could Happen To You,' 'I Could Write A Book' and several others.

Except for the taping of a live performance at the Portland Festival, Miles Davis' 1966 discography only lists Miles Smiles which was unusual considering the large output Miles and his ensembles produced for Columbia Records in the Sixties.
The bass player Ron Carter was best suited for the complicated rhythm part and remained Miles’s 'number one' in a quintet which gave a new interpretation to compositions by Wayne Shorter and jazz hits such as "Freedom Jazz Dance" by Eddie Harris and Jimmy Heath’s "Gingerbread Boy".
Every second of the nine-minute-long "Footprints" by Shorter is an absolute highlight, while the drumming of the young Tony Williams in "Freedom Jazz Dance" is full of vitality, with a quick pulse, and even described as threatening in the liner notes. This music is neither 'new stream' nor 'old guard' but good modern jazz according to Anthony Tuttle. That’s exactly what Miles Smiles was upon its release 40 years ago and that’s exactly what it has remained to this day!

Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the 3rd in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia, producing music of high energy and immediacy. This is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, "Ahmad's Blues." Miles is the sole survivor of this quintet but the music made in the mid-50's period will live forever. The excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Miles' poignancy and intense swing. Here are four tunes from one of the classic sessions of all time when a combination of giants gathered in Rudy Van Gelder's studio for a historic meeting on Christmas Eve afternoon, 1954. With Thelonious Monk and three-quarters of the Modern Jazz Quartet (Jackson, Heath and Clarke) as his accomplices, Miles blends sophisticated harmonic knowledge with raw, spontaneous invention to produce extraordinary music. The two takes of "The Man I Love" are quite different within their basic similarity.
“The latest round of Acoustic Sounds’ ‘Fantasy 45 series’ – albums from Fantasy’s Original Jazz Classics catalogue, each reissued on two 180-gram LPs cut at 45rpm – includes two mid-‘50s masterworks…The Miles session, Christmas Eve ’54, was famously tense. Miles apparently yelled at Monk not to play during his solos…Every song, every bar, crackles with electricity. Miles’ solos, especially on ‘Bemsha Swing,’ are explosively creative…Jackson, freed from the MJQ chamber, storms the vibes with unmatched verve and precision. This was one of Rudy Van Gelder’s first recordings, and it already displays his hallmark traits…the trumpet blares and the vibes gleam with as much fidelity as on any modern recording. And listen to those juicy high-plucked bass strings during Heath’s solos. During his solo on ‘The Man I Love,’ Monk loses himself and stops playing; Miles assists by playing a few notes of the theme. He’s off-mike, and you can hear those notes bouncing off the studio walls. It’s a spooky, time-travel moment; you’re there!” – Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, January 2006, Issue 158

1955's 'Round Midnight was Miles Davis' debut release for the jazz powerhouse Columbia Records. Featuring a phenomenal supporting cast that included alto and tenor saxophonists Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, drummer Philly Joe Jones, bassist Paul Chambers and pianist Red Garland, 'Round About Midnight marked the origins of what would become known as post-bop modern jazz. The music here ranges from the sublime Cole Porter standard "All Of You" with Davis employing the Harmon mute sound, to the restrained bop of "Ah-Leu-Cha" which features a Dixieland counterpoint at beginning and end, to the Paul Chambers bass showcase of "Dear Old Stockholm" and the universally loved "'Round Midnight."

In 1958, after a string of critically acclaimed and successful albums, Miles Davis was searching for a new direction to take the music, and signs were pointing him off the chordal highway into a new jazz style: modal. His innovations would open up the world for improvisers. He recruited key players with the potential to solidify his new approach, forming his famed sextet with rising jazz giants John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans & Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Miles hired the little-known Evans because he needed a pianist who was into the modal thing. Davis and Evans both had developed personal voices characterized by a melodic flow that suggested, rather than defined, musical structure. It was his relationship with Evans that created the spark that resulted in the album Kind of Blue.
In only two impromptu sessions in March and April of 1959, Miles Davis’s sextet created a tour de force — 5 original tunes built on simple scales. Davis is committed to getting something spontaneous out of his musicians. The entire album was composed as a series of modal sketches and was conceived only hours before the recording dates. The outcome? Pure inspiration, and the stuff of legend — an album made up of the first full take of each tune, captured at the historic Columbia 30th Street Studio. The album was originally released on Columbia Records in 1959, stunning the jazz world by practically creating a new language of music. Its influence goes far beyond jazz. Kind of Blue is universally considered to be one of the best albums of all time, of any genre. Fifty years later, Kind of Blue — the epitome of spontaneous invention—is still the best selling jazz album ever.
This Collector’s Edition marks the 50th Anniversary with an unprecedented presentation of music, images, insight and history to celebrate the album that is essential to any music collection, the ideal gift item for any jazz lover, especially fans of Miles Davis … a true collector’s set.

Bitches Brew Miles Davis $24.99

The mercurial Bitches Brew is thought by many to be one of the most revolutionary albums in jazz history, having virtually created the genre known as jazz-rock fusion. Miles adds to his In A Silent Way concept here with soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, additional drums and percussion, plus African, Indian and Brazilian instruments. The result was unlike any music heard before or since. A complete rejection of traditional songs, chord progressions, or even melodic conventions, the album signified that music could be just layers of texture and sound. Bitches Brew is not just an important recording, it's an essential one!

Miles From India Miles Davis $44.99

After unanimous acclaim from critics and consumers alike, the ground-breaking album, Miles From India is now available on vinyl. Miles From India is a cross-cultural celebration of the music of Miles Davis by India's foremost musicians collaborating with the legendary musicians who comprised the various Miles Davis Bands over the years. This audiophile 3 x 180g LP collector's set was specially re-mastered for vinyl and no detail is left to chance.
In a startlingly original recreation of music associated with jazz legend Miles Davis, producer-archivist Bob Belden, renowned for his Grammy Award-winning reissue work on a series of Miles Davis boxed sets for Sony/Columbia, along with co-arranger Louiz Banks (celebrated keyboardist from India), has recast familiar themes from such landmark recordings as Bitches Brew, In A Silent Way, and Kind of Blue with an East Meets West sensibility on Miles...From India. An incredibly ambitious project involving two dozen musicians from two separate continents recording in studios around the world, Miles...From India is a cross-cultural summit meeting that puts a provocative pan-global spin on such Miles classics as "All Blues," "Spanish Key," "So What," "It's About That Time" and "Jean Pierre."
Sitar and tablas, ghatam and khanjira, mridangam and Carnatic violin blend seamlessly with muted trumpet and saxophones, screaming electric guitar and grooving electric bass lines, piano, upright bass and drums on this profound fusion of Indian classical and American jazz. Recorded in Mumbai and Madras, India and New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, the music on Miles From India was performed by classical and jazz musicians from India with the addition of musicians who have recorded or performed with Miles Davis over the span of five decades.
The Miles alumni included on the sessions are saxophonists Dave Liebman (1972-74) and Gary Bartz (1970-71), guitarists Mike Stern (1981-84), Pete Cosey (1973-76)
and John McLaughlin (1969-72), bassists Ron Carter (1963-69), Michael Henderson (1970-76), Marcus Miller (1981-1984), Benny Rietveld (1987-91), keyboardists Chick Corea (1968-72), Adam Holzman (1985-87) and Robert Irving III (1980- 88), drummers Jimmy Cobb (1958-63), Leon 'Ndugu' Chancler (1971), Lenny White (1969) and Vince Wilburn (1981, 1984-1987) and tabla player Badal Roy (1972-3). All of the stylistic elements that made Miles Davis’ 1956 quintet one of the immortal bands in jazz history are on display in this collection. “Surrey with the Fringe on Top” and “Diane” are medium-tempo standards that highlight the contrast between the leader’s Harmon-muted horn, the explorations of John Coltrane’s tenor sax and Red Garland’s sparkling piano. “Salt Peanuts” and “Well, You Needn’t,” each a modern jazz classic, allow for intense swinging over the beat of Paul Chambers’ bass and Philly Joe Jones’ drums. And “Something I Dreamed Last Night” and “When I Fall in Love” give us vulnerable, visceral ballad playing by Davis that remains unsurpassed

Hard bop was still slower than bebop, but more driving than cool jazz. Where cool jazz is sometimes referred to as ‘chamber jazz’, hard bop brought in elements of R&B and gospel. The Walkin’ album is now considered to be one of Davis’ most important albums, with his all-star rhythm section playing behind him, Horace Silver on piano, and the one-two punch of Kenny Clarke on drums and Percy Heath on bass delivering the goods, as they always did. Heath and Clarke went on to do another important session that year with Davis, but in addition to Horace Silver on piano there was another genius of the ivories, Thelonious Monk. This, of course, was the infamous Christmas Eve session, which eventually became two albums, Bags’ Groove (based on Milt Jackson’s theme), and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants. These two albums are important because they are one of the few instances of Davis and Monk playing together. 1954 was also a significant year because it was Davis’ last year in relative obscurity, the following year he played, “Well You Needn’t” at the Newport Jazz Festival and the rest is history. All this happened in 1954.
The double 180g album Miles 1954 collects Davis' seminal releases from that prolific year into one package, combining all the tracks from the landmark albums Walkin', Bag's Groove and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants.

When producer Bob Weinstock founded Prestige Records in 1949, little did he know that his tiny independent recording company would become iconic in documenting an era when jazz was in its golden age. While the label also recorded blues and folk music in its lifetime, Prestige was primarily known as the label that stood for high-premium jazz throughout its active history. Its legacy continued first as a reissue imprint with Fantasy Records and today with the Concord Music Group.
The Very Best of Prestige Records opens a wide window on a 20-year period when jazz made great evolutionary strides, from bebop to soul jazz. Phillips says, “As we toast the 60th anniversary of Prestige, we offer this collection as an appetizer, knowing full well that it can’t help but whet your appetite for much, much more of the tasty and ageless musical offerings available from the iconic label.”
Produced by Nick Phillips, the compilation of instrumental imporvisational music features music by a who's who of the jazz world in the '50s and '60s. Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was one of the most distinguished jazz musicians of the latter half of the 20th century. A trumpeter, bandleader and composer, Davis was at the forefront of almost every major development in jazz from World War II to the 1990s. He played on various early bebop records and recorded one of the first cool jazz records. He was partially responsible for the development of modal jazz, and jazz fusion arose from his work with other musicians in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Free jazz was the only post-war jazz style not significantly influenced by Davis, although some musicians from his bands later pursued this style. His recordings, along with the live performances of his many influential bands, were vital in jazz's acceptance as music with lasting artistic value. A popularizer as well as an innovator, Davis became famous for his languid, melodic style and his laconic, and at times confrontational, personality. As an increasingly well-paid and fashionably-dressed jazz musician, Davis was also a symbol of jazz music's commercial potential.
Davis was late in a line of jazz trumpeters that started with Buddy Bolden and ran through Joe "King" Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie. He has been compared to Duke Ellington as a musical innovator: both were skillful players on their instruments, but were not considered technical virtuosos. Ellington's main strength was as a composer and leader of a large band, while Davis had a talent for drawing together talented musicians in small groups and allowing them space to develop. Many of the major figures in post-war jazz played in one of Davis's groups at some point in their career.
Davis was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006. He has also been inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame, and the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame. There are plans to make a biopic about Davis starring Don Cheadle
