R.E.M.'s 1987 album Docment was the Georgia quartet's commercial breakthrough driven by the hit singles "The One I Love" and "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." It was the first to be produced by Scott Litt who would go on to produce every R.E.M. album for the next decade. Featuring Michael Stipe’s increasingly political lyrics and distinctive vocals, combined with Peter Buck's elegantly twisted guitar lines and the superb rhythm section of Mike Mills and Bill Berry, Document showcases a band at the top of their game.

R.E.M.’s debut album, released in 1983, was so far removed from the prevailing trends of American popular music that it still sounds miraculous and out of time today. J. Niimi tells the story of the album’s genesis – with fascinating input from Don Dixon and Mitch Easter. He also investigates Michael Stipe’s hypnotic, mysterious lyrics, and makes the case for Murmur as a work of Southern Gothic art. EXCEPRT: In the course of an interview that took place some twenty years ago, Michael Stipe made passing reference to an essay that had a deep impact on him. It’s what came to his mind when, after having been harangued by fans and journalists alike about Murmur’s lyrics, already grown weary from having to continually entertain their broad speculations, he finally threw up his hands. “Anyone who really wants to figure out the words to our songs should probably read this essay, then go back and listen,” Stipe told the interviewer. “It talks about how people misinterpret something that’s being said, and come up with a little phrase or word that actually defines the essence of what the original was better than the original did.” What Stipe was trying to say is that if you want answers to R.E.M., you’re not only looking in the wrong place, you’re also asking the wrong questions.

R.E.M. developed a strangely subdued variation of their trademark sound for their full-length debut album, Murmur by de-emphasizing the backbeat and accentuating the ambience of the guitars. Even though it's firmly rooted in the tradition of American folk-rock, post-punk, and garage rock, Murmur sounds eerily timeless, as if it appeared out of nowhere. Part of the distinctiveness lies in the atmospheric production, which exudes a detached sense of mystery, but it also comes from the remarkably accomplished songwriting. R.E.M. went on to produce a few albums that may have been on par with Murmur, but they never made anything that sounded quite like it. Reissued here on audiophile quality 180g vinyl with original packaging.

Live At The Olympia Special Edition 4 LP/2 CD/DVD Box Set features 39 tracks from the band's acclaimed 2007 working rehearsals in Dublin, Ireland where the band set up camp at Ireland's capital city and tested new material over five nights before passionate, capacity crowds.
