Although it's more song-driven and acoustic than Kid A, Radiohead's Amnesiac was hulled from the same sessions and it marked the first time in the band's career that a new record didn't bring about a complete shift in artistic priorities. It's nevertheless another brilliant offering from the most musically innovative band in modern music and another fine example of the fact that they're comfortably in a league all their own.

Hail To The Thief Radiohead $25.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
Release Date: August 19, 2008
Radiohead's 2003 release Hail To The Theif borrows equally from OK Computer's epic progressive rock and Kid A's skittering electronic theatrics while using eloquent metaphors and complicated arrangements to express the uncertainty, fear and anger arising from the 2000 U.S. presidential election and a post-9/11 world. The occasional hard-grooving funk rhythm and crazed rock guitar riff keeps even the airiest sentiments well anchored though, making Hail To The Theif as well balanced as it is progressive.

With the near impossible task of following up their critically acclaimed masterpiece OK Computer, Radiohead took another bold leap with Kid A, an experimental album built largely around the union of electronica and mood. Musically, Kid A is as accomplished as anything Radiohead has ever produced and its overflowing with eye-opening musical mosaics which are absolutely stunning in their insight and beauty.

Granted classic album status almost immediately upon its release in 1997, OK Computer transformed Radiohead from a highly promising rock act into The Most Important Band in the World, a label the band has been burdened by ever since. Combining elements of bombastic prog rock with alternating time signatures and traditional pop songwriting, OK Computer was an artistic departure from the sound of the band's previous efforts and it was the first true sign of the band's restless ambition.

Pablo Honey Radiohead $20.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Release Date: September 2, 2008
Radiohead's debut album, Pablo Honey, is a promising collection that blends anthemic rock with long, atmospheric instrumental passages and an enthralling triple-guitar attack. Although it is undoubtedly less slick and accomplished than their subsequent work, Thom Yorke's vulnerable but impressive vocal styling was already in place on songs such as "Stop Whispering" "Anyone Can Play Guitar" and the surprise hit "Creep." In terms of musical maturity, Radiohead were clearly years ahead of their time even at these early stages.
Track Listing:
1. You
2. Creep
3. How Do You?
4. Stop Whispering
5. Thinking About You
6. Anyone Can Play Guitar
7. Ripcord
8. Vegetable

While Radiohead saw its stock rising, it wasn't until their artisic breakthrough, The Bends that the band really began to be realized for their soaring aspirations. Displaying a far more expansive approach than its predecessor, The Bends marries such ambitious and often challenging, instrumental soundscapes to songs that are at their cores hauntingly melodic and accessible. It's one of the most essential albums of the '90s and a spectacular indicator of further greatness to come.

1. Planet Telex

33 1/3 is a series of short books about the making of wide variety of albums, written by a diverse group of authors/artists with titles ranging from Aja by Steely Dan to Zeppelin IV. The series contains over fifty titles and is acclaimed and loved by fans, musicians and scholars alike. These are for the music nuts out there who appreciate fantastic design, and smart, fun writing. Each book in the series takes an important album and breaks it down in startling minutiae. We love these books…you will, too!
Seemingly granted ‘classic album’ status within days of its release in 1997, OK Computer transformed Radiohead from a highly promising rock act into The Most Important Band in the World – a label the band has been burdened by (and has fooled around with) ever since. Through close musical analysis of each song, Dai Griffiths explores the themes and ideas that have made this album resonate so deeply with its audience, and argues that OK Computer is one of the most successfully realized CD albums so far created. EXCERPT But then ‘Karma Police’ changes. After the second chorus the track lifts, in various ways. Harmonically, there’s a key change of sorts (the sheet music charmingly follows the convention of preparing the reader for the new key signature), from E minor to B minor, although in truth both sections use similar chords. Then vocally or melodically, the key change takes Thom Yorke to his angelic register. Texturally, there’s a big shift, with all the instruments doing lighter things. Best to my mind though, there’s the one word, phew. Phew’s great: it’s a cartoon word, like ‘gulp’ or ‘zzzz’ or ‘bah’. Its precision matters, the fact that it’s really there, properly pronounced, not just sort-of-breathed…
This is an evocative and contemporary soundtrack featuring the likes of R.E.M., Radiohead, Sir Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Red House Painters. Josh Rouse, Siqur Ros, Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, Nancy Wilson, and the Chemical Brothers among others. Radiohead are an English rock band from Oxfordshire, initially formed by school friends in 1985. Radiohead's first single "Creep", from their debut album Pablo Honey (1993), became an unexpected worldwide hit, at first branding Radiohead a one-hit wonder. However, the band caught on at home in the UK with their second album, The Bends (1995), earning fans with their dense guitar atmospheres and frontman Thom Yorke's expressive singing, often in falsetto. Radiohead's third album OK Computer (1997) propelled them to greater attention. Popular for its expansive sound and themes of alienation, it has been acclaimed by many critics as one of the landmark albums of the 1990s.
Radiohead's original influences were alternative rock and post-punk bands such as R.E.M., The Smiths, Pixies and Joy Division. With their albums Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001), the band reached their peak global popularity even as their music became less conventional, turning towards influences in electronic music, experimental jazz and avant garde classical, ranging from Autechre and Can to Charles Mingus and Olivier Messiaen. Their latest album Hail to the Thief (2003) was also inspired by Neil Young and The Beatles, and was noted for its mix of guitars, electronic atmospheres and topical lyrics.
Although the band's recent albums have polarized listeners, Radiohead have often been praised as among the most creative musical groups of their era, drawing crowds to their concerts and influencing artists in many genres. Radiohead have enjoyed surprising commercial success for a band of "outsiders" but are seen by some to have maintained a spirit of musical and political independence despite recording for EMI, a major label.
