De La Soul Is Dead De La Soul $19.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Release Date: July 2008
De La Soul’s second album, originally released in 1991, was initially received poorly by the press and their fans due to its immediate rejection of the “daisy-age” image created by their debut LP. In the years since, however, it has come to be accepted as a stone classic that may even surpass the feel-good jams of Three Feet High And Rising with its expansive scope and more diverse subject matter such as drug addiction, incest, poseurs, in addition to the more expected, light-hearted material. Prince Paul’s production is, again, nothing short of brilliant and De La Soul brings the flow that has made them, rightfully, hip-hop legends.

When a pair of intelligent, visionary emcees joins forces with a battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, a classically trained violist, and a jazz trumpet player, the result is a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop. Progressive in both style and message, the band's ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned Flobots a reputation for both originality and authenticity. After originally forming as a side project in 2005, Flobots brought together Emcees Jonny 5 and Brer Rabbit with violist Mackenzie Roberts, guitarist Andy Guerrero, bassist Jesse Walker, trumpet player Joe Ferrone, and drummer Kenny Ortiz. By the end of the year, it was clear that the band's refreshingly positive message and nontraditional instrumentation gave it both a universal appeal and a marketable buzz factor. Whether sharing the stage with jam bands, indie rock acts, or hip-hop groups, Flobots connected with audiences and quickly reached a tipping point to became one of Denver's most influential bands.

T.I. has become of his generation’s most captivating personalities and audiences are immediately engrossed by the King of the South’s lyrics and swagger. With Paper Trail, he promises to deliver his most potent and important LP to date. Its title is a direct reference to T.I.’s return to literally writing down his lyrics, a practice he hasn’t engaged in since his 2001 debut, I’m Serious. Ironically, he found that going back to the basics has helped him evolve into a better MC. The album features guest appearances and production by Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Usher, The Dream, Fall Out Boy, Kanye West, B.O.B., John Legend, DJ Toomp, Swizz Beatz, Drumma Boy & Danja.
“I’m not doing too much pre-hype on the album,” Tip says of his new project. “I just want everyone to know that it’s coming out in a few months and that I’m going to answer a lot of questions in the music. It’s intense and insightful; it’s gonna shake up the game and it’s me at my best.”

MUSIQ SOULCHILD, raised (mostly) in PHILADELPHIA, PA., a soulstar who has developed a sound uniquely his own, by fusing together the essence of "Soul Music" with "Funk" rules and "Hip Hop" swagger, all while making his mark on the charts with his first hit single entitled "JUST FRIENDS" (SUNNY)" from his platinum DEF SOUL release "AIJUSWANASEING" (I just want to sing). And made us ponder the meaning of true affection with second hit simply entitled "LOVE" Now, in his new home as an ATLANTIC RECORDS recording artist, he's just finished working on his fourth album "LUVANMUSIQ" expecting a March 13th, 2007 release, while making plans to venture into and break new creative ground. Who knows, might not be too long before you see this soulstar in a theatre near you.

Perhaps it?s the way he keeps backsides bouncing with energetic, clubjumping anthems like ?Shut Up? and ?Take It to Da House.? Or maybe it?s his foul-mouthed, triple-X antics on such hood hits like ?Na?an N****? and last year?s candy licking summer single ?Sugar (Gimme Some).? Or it could be the way his deep, soul-drenched baritone unapologetically reveals honest, first-hand accounts of life inside the ugly underbelly of America?s inner cities on the heart-wrenching prophecies ''America'' and ''Thug Holiday.'' Whatever the reason behind the unmatched success of his six-album solo career, Trick Daddy has become one of the most diverse and recognizable voices in hip-hop today. Not only has Trick been able to appeal to mainstream masses with a handful of platinum albums, but he also kept his grassroots fan base satisfi ed with true-to-life lyrics and trunk-rattling beats. Now after continually reporting from the mean streets of his Miami-Dade County stomping grounds to a loyal following, Trick Daddy returns with a fl awless seventh album aptly titled Back By Thug Demand. Whether reporting on the brutalities of everyday people, keeping the club crunk or putting his peers in their places, Trick Daddy has never been afraid to expose himself (or others) to the world around us. For Trick, nothing less will do. ''People say keeping it real is a hard thing to do. Keeping it real is easy,'' says Trick. ''Being fake and being soft is hard to do. For me not to keep it real or sell you a record that is fake, my luck will probably be bad for the rest of my life.''

Black Rob is certainly no stranger to making classics. After guest appearing on a string of timeless bad boy cuts from P.Diddy and Mase, Rob landed a hit in late 1999 with 'Whoa!'. It's been five years since Black Rob dropped his classic debut Life's Story on the heels of the aforementioned groundbreaking single 'Whoa', still B.R. has proven that not only is he getting better at dismantling mics, but his fans have an undying allegiance for him. The Black Rob report not only details some of the author's trials, tribulations and ultimate triumphs, it finds B.R. returning to form as one of hip-hop's premier gutter griots, never relinquishing his mastery of slick word play and story telling. Eminem's masterful second record has the chops and the credentials to go along with it. The Marshall Mathers LP won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, "The Real Slim Shady" won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance and the record was also nominated for the Grammy for Album Of The Year. Expanding upon his debut, Eminem's follow-up is both funnier and darker than his debut and the production is nearly as evocative as the raps, with liquid basslines, stuttering rhythms, slight sound effects and spacious soundscapes. Reissued here on Double Vinyl LP by Universal Records.

The weight of Notorious B.I.G.'s legacy is so profound that most major rap MCs and R&B singers alive — and some who are dead — are willing to be attached to it in whatever form possible. It could also be argued that anyone with the means is more than willing to profit from it in a monetary way. Here's Duets: The Final Chapter, released just before Christmas Day 2005, following 1999's Born Again, which was released just before Christmas Day 1999. Like Born Again, Duets takes bits of unused material from the late legend, and that can entail full-blown verses, looped declarations, or punctuative interjections.

Through candid, original interviews and exclusive details about the group's extraordinary rise to the top--and its mortal end brought on by the tragic murder in 2002 of Jam Master Jay-- 'Raising Hell' tells of Run D.M.C.'s epic story, including the rivalries with jealous peers, their mentoring of such legendary artists as the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, and the battles with producers, record executives, and one another. Ronin Ro delivers a meticulously researched, compellingly written, affecting behind-the-music tale of family, friendship, betrayal, murder, and the building of the culture and industry known as hip-hop.
The first time people heard The Streets’ Mercury Prize nominated debut Original Pirate Material, they couldn’t make their minds up whether the person making this music was black or white, from London or the Midlands, deadly serious or a total joker. With Everything Is Borrowed, Mike Skinner has another impressive achievement on his hands, one which surprises and delights the listener around every turn. The album finds The Streets not only rediscovering his old irrepressible buoyancy but sailing away on that trademark stop-start lyrical flow to waters no-one else has ever visited.

The Black Chord is a landmark depiction of the cultural cross-fertilization that is the foundation of today's pop. Following a circular path, music has traveled from its roots and extended its branches into popular music only to return and recreate itself: Senegalese rhythms survived slavery and flourished in New Orleans to become jazz and rhythm & blues which informed Jamaican reggae, which influenced New York hip-hop, which in turn--completing the circle--inspired young rap artists in Senegal. This is a centuries-long saga that continues to energize musicians in every genre.
Hip-hop is the biggest youth movement in the world today, and leading the way is the new sound of the South, exemplified by platinum and multi-platinum artists like OutKast, Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz, Ludacris, Ying Yang Twins, and 8Ball and MJG.
This fascinating book reveals where Dirty South hip-hop came from and where it's heading. It explores the hopes, struggles, and frustrations of performers and producers, and guides you to the best in Southern hip-hop on CD and DVD, in magazines, and on the web. If you want to know where the South is taking music, you need this book.
HIP-HOP, INC. reveals the strategies of success that can be applied to virtually any other business. It tells the stories of the most successful of the rap elite and, through extensive interviews, lets the advice flow from the millionaires themselves.
Some of the moguls featured in the book include Russell Simmons, Sean "P Diddy" Combs, Percy "Master P" Miller, Marion "Suge" Knight, Damon Dash, Jay Z, and Dr. Dre.
Known to his family as Christopher Wallace, to his friends as Biggie and to his fans around the world as a legend, there can be no doubt that this Brooklyn rapper changed music forever. And now the epic tale of this one of a kind MC comes to the big screen. The Notorious Soundtrack, the companion piece to the highly anticipated motion picture, tells the story of the late, great B.I.G. the way he would - through rhymes and beats. Filled with timeless classics like “Juicy” and “Hypnotize” plus new songs by some of hip hop’s biggest names and never-before-released demos from the rapper’s earliest days, this is a collection no hip hop fan should be miss.

The Beastie Boys' 8 song debut EP, Pollywog Stew was originally released in 1982. The then teenage hardcore punk band consisted of Adam “MCA” Yauch on bass guitar, Kate Schellenbach on drums, John Berry on guitar and singer Michael “Mike D” Diamond. Recorded at Jerry Williams' 171A, the same place as Bad Brains' legendary ROIR sessions, it was also the first ever release on Dave Parsons' Ratcage Records, a tiny hardcore label operated from an East Village storefront of the same name. Long out of print in its original form, it's now available here on Limited Edition Import Vinyl with bonus live tracks!
Stereophile magazine senior contributing editor and analog expert Michael Fremer presents his almost three hour long Practical Guide to Turntable Set-Up. Fremer sets up three popular turntables from Pro-Ject, Rega and VPI. Using the hands-on phono cartridge installation techniques, tips and basic principles demonstrated with close-ups and flash animation, any turntable from the popular Technics SL-1200 to the most esoteric can be set up to perfection. Also included: an interview with famed Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino, and a 20 page PDF file embedded in the disc's DVD-ROM section that includes even more detailed technical descriptions and an article on record cleaning no vinyl fan should be without. Despite the seemingly dry subject matter, the disc is entertaining. There are even some laughs as Fremer once did stand up comedy (he played legendary Max's Kansas City and even opened for bands like Television and The Jam).

An accessible combination of serious study and exciting pop reference, THE LATIN BEAT explains each of the wildly varied Latin Musical forms--bossa nova, cumbia, merengue, tango, ranchera, rumba, son, salsa--in the context of the countries in which they arose (Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Domincan Republic, Mexico). Morales then traces each of these forms as they migrated north, and explains how they were absorbed into the American mix. He travels from the Latin ballad to the cocktail-lounge bossa nova to Latin jazz, chronicles the development of the samba in Brazil and salsa in New York, explores the connection between the mambo craze of the '40s and '50s with the Cuban craze of today, and uncovers the hidden history of Latinos in '80s and '90s rock and hip hop. THE LATIN BEAT explores where the music has come from, and celebrates all of the directions it is going.
