Ultimately Deerhoof is not about notes and rhythms, but about emotion. And while Offend Maggie sparkles with that inimitable something-or-other for which the band's become known, what this record wears on its sleeve so boldly and poignantly, is its stark humanness: of the characters in the lyrics, of the singer in front of the mic, of the band bashing it out in a room together. Deerhoof has that Brian Wilson gift for communicating, even with the barest of rock and roll provisions, every shading of their lyrics. On Offend Maggie a friction between tragic and comic, masculine and feminine, is played out in spectacularly dramatic fashion. This famously cheerful band can certainly summon the thunderclouds when needed. Like the traditional enka music of Japan that Satomi counts among her childhood influences, these songs are often haunted by heartbreak and frustration, but at the same time they're universal, and meant to give courage to the listener. "Chandelier Searchlight" is a genuine pop gem, somehow simultaneously light and brash, giddy and apprehensive. The protagonists of "My Purple Past" are sonically portrayed with a swaggering, but bruised, machismo. The bossa-noise skit "This Is God Speaking" cranks its self-aggrandizement to the point of absurdity. In the jazzy "Numina" we feel we are spiraling, bewitched, into a maze-like nightmare. Often the music adds its own ironic counterpoint to the lyrics: though innocent-looking enough on paper, "Basket Ball Get Your Groove Back" is performed with Deerhoofian black humor, Satomi sounding almost like a Japanese Kimya Dawson. "Buck and Judy" hints at an undertone of malevolence lurking beneath the ostensibly mundane. "Eaguru Guru" likens the USA to a blustering bully, even as the music seems to insinuate a different superpower.

After refaceting some old gems for greater illumination on Hibernaculum, Earth returns once again to it's continuing evolution. Where Hex reveled in dark satanic twang and austere american beauty, The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull finds Dylan Carlson and the band growing into a harder, more rock, american Gospel and impovisitory direction framed by truly psychedelic production and blazing guitar sounds. Earth shows it's affinity with a nod to the best elements of the more adventurous San Francisco bands of the late 60's and 70's, and the more spiritually aware and exciting forms of Jazz-Rock from the same era. This is no nostalgia trip but a thoroughly inspired and original metamorphosis. The album also features legendary and virtuoso guitarist Bill Frisell on three songs. Frisell adds a brilliant texture and counterpoint to the scintillating and inspired riffs of Dylan Carlson and the band. Adrienne Davies joins again on drums lending a classic and steady feel to the proceedings. Steve Moore also returns adding heavy hammond organ and his intense jazz inspired piano playing. Live bassist Don McGreevy also makes his full length Earth debut on this record.

Four Minute Mile Get Up Kids, The $13.99
Colored Vinyl LP - Sealed

In 1997, The Get Up Kids released the album that catapulted them to indie stardom, known as Four Minute Mile, the twelve song album combined with constant touring broke the band into a whole new level. Four Minute Mile created enormous buzz with a hooky immediacy and DIY aesthetic that was becoming the signature of midwest emo. Four Minute Mile is the album that put the Kansas City, MO band on the map as everyone's favorite emo-pop rockers. With catchy lyrics, unique and powerful pop/rock composition, and an overall sense of energy, The Get Up Kids quickly won over fans nation wide.
After nearly a decade of touring and a multitude of releases, the band members parted ways to pursue other projects. Singer Matt Pryor went on to form the New Amsterdams, and recently released a solo project. Bassist Rob Pope is now a member of the successful indie rock group Spoon. And brothers Rob and Ryan played in Doghouse indie rock band Koufax. The Get Up Kids contributions to the Emo Music scene are apparent with artists from Fallout Boy to HelloGoodBye citing the band as a major influence. Cat Stevens' introspective and personal Mona Bone Jakon, produced by former Yardbird Paul Samwell-Smith, offers one of the singer/songwriter's earliest displays of spiritual yearning and world-weariness in pop culture. The compositions deal with the trials of fame, ("Pop Star"), personal hardships, ("Trouble") and faith ("I Think I See the Light.") The release also marked the emergence of Stevens' rich, distinctive baritone and established his trademark sound. Reissued here on 180g Vinyl from Universal Records.

Co-founders Tyson Ritter (vocals/bass) and Nick Wheeler (guitar/programming) hail from Stillwater, OK, where the pair first embraced music as an appealing diversion from the ho-hum life of small-town America. Citing such influences as AC/DC, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi, they formed The All-American Rejects in 2000, while both members were still in high school. Originally released on Doghouse in October 2002, the self-titled record was later reissued by DreamWorks. The band scored a hit with the effervescent "Swing, Swing," which attracted attention from Interscope Records and ultimately landed the All-American Rejects on the label's roster. Move Along, the band's sophomore album and first for Interscope, was released in July 2005; it also marked the official debut of Mike Kennerty (guitar) and Chris Gaylor (drums), both of whom had joined the band in 2002 after the completion of the Rejects' eponymous debut. Like its predecessor, Move Along was a huge success and went platinum, with three singles ("Dirty Little Secret," "Move Along," and "It Ends Tonight") enjoying chart success in the U.S. and abroad. Here on an Orange colored vinyl reissue. Long out of press and never available on orange.

GNV FLA Less Than Jake $39.99
Limited Edition 7" Vinyl LP - Sealed
Limited Edition 7" Box Set
This GNV FLA 7" Box Set is a companion piece to Less Than Jake's recently released seventh album. Consisting of live, acoustic or demo versions of the album tracks as well as B-side culled from the studio and stage, these three 7" singles offer exlusive content not available anywhere else. Included in the box will also be the full GNV FLA CD album, a poster of the band and a DVD of in-studio footage arranged and edited by LTJ trombonist Louis "Buddy" Schaub from the GNV FLA recording sessions and live performances from concerts and in-stores.
With their ninth album GNV FLA, named in honor of their hometown of Gainesville, Florida, Less Than Jake reverts back to the roots of what has made them ska-punk icons. Musically, GNV FLA is a return to form and it revisits the traditional Less Than Jake trademark sound of horn driven, bouncy ska grooves. Produced by Matt Allison (Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, The Falcon) at Atlas Studios in Chicago. The record is due out on the band's own Sleep It Off Records and it's their first non-major label album since 2000's Borders and Boundaries.
Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Metallica's debut album, and in anticipation of the release of the band's ninth studio album Death Magnetic, Warner Bros., under direct supervision from the band, are reissuing their early genre defining albums, Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets,...And Justice For All and Metallica (aka The Black Album) as both standard and deluxe vinyl editions.
The self-titled Metallica (aka The Black Album), the bands fifth studio album, became one of the biggest selling albums in history. The 1991 album has sold more than 15 million copies in the U.S. (the rare diamond certification) and 22 million worldwide. With some of the groups most popular and radiofriendly songs, Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters, Metallica peaked at #1 and brought the band solidly into a league all their own. Though a step away from the thrash metal the band pioneered, the album was nevertheless heavier than anything the band had yet recorded. Included in Rolling Stones Essential Recordings Of The 90s and Spins 90 Greatest Albums Of The 90s, The Black Album was also honored as one of the Best Metal Albums Of All Time by Q Magazine, which noted that Metallica elevated the band from cult metalheroes into global superstars.
This standard vinyl package contains two regular-weight 33-1/3 rpm vinyl discs in a single-pocket Stoughton jacket with insert.

In Ear Park Department Of Eagles $15.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
Department of Eagles began in 2000, when Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen became roommates at New York University. The two began making music together, collecting samples and turning them into songs using pirated software and a microphone borrowed from their neighbor Chris Taylor (who, years later, would become Daniels bandmate in Grizzly Bear and DoEs producer/engineer). In 2004 Daniel joined the group Grizzly Bear as a singer, guitarist and songwriter. He began touring with the band, and brought a number of songs to their critically acclaimed sophomore album Yellow House and follow-up EP Friend. Over the years, stealing time on weekends and between tours, they slowly accumulated bits and pieces, and by late 2007 an album had begun taking shape. In December, Department of Eagles began work on its second album, In Ear Park. Chris Taylor acted as producer/engineer and also played electric bass and horns. Chris Bear, Grizzly Bears drummer, also contributed heavily to the album. In Ear Park is a colorful and expansive album, an intimate and personal collection of songs; much of the material that Daniel Rossen brought to In Ear Park draws on memories from his childhood, especially those relating to his father, who passed away in 2007 and to whom the album is dedicated. Many of Freds contributions relate to similar themes of nostalgia and mortality, giving the album at times an elegiac feel. Ear Park is full of intimate moments, lush production and concise songwriting.

Originally issued back in 1997, Von was the first full album release from Icelandic drifters Sigur Ros and it's now available here on Limited Edition Direct Metal Master 200g Import LP. The sound across these 12 tracks is reassuringly primitive, though often daring, drifting from 4AD-inspired quasi-shoegazing atmospherics at one moment, and John-Cage inspired silence the next. The band was quite obviously at this stage not only looking at the reverberating echoes of the British Indie scene of the late 80s, but also in its more ambitious forefather, Prog rock.

On the Eve of Absolute Getdown is a concept album in four phases about the struggle against succumbing to self-destruction. Over the course of the 13 songs on Player/Kommander's debut, a protagonist with a serious social anxiety disorder and various chemical dependencies embarks on a one-night rollercoaster ride. The journey is conveyed through a potent blend of hard rock, soul, boogie, disco and pop courtesty of guitarists Jim Troglen and John Fuller, drummer Robbie Stephens, bassist Roman Glick and cult hero frontman James Hall. With producer Jeff Tomei (Smashing Pumpkins, Matchbox Twenty) at the helm, Player/Kommander concoct infectious jams like the trippy "White-Out of the Mind," the piano-bolstered "You've Had Your Fun" and the harmony-resplendent first single "Be This Way," recalling equal parts Kings of Leon, Replacements and the Bee Gees.

Waylon Jennings career spanned for more than 40 years. During his lifetime he released over 50 studio albums which generated 16 number one singles and four Country Music Awards. Waylon Forever is the final recording of this country music legend. This eight-song collection of cover songs and originals features the vocals of Waylon Jennings backed by his son Shooter Jennings & the .357s.
The inception of Waylon Forever began in 1995 when Waylon asked Shooter to collaborate on an album with him. "With 20 or so songs we went into the studio to cut vocals and overdubs. He was so excited for us doing a record together, constantly pushing himself and coming up with new ideas. I was so nervous but he was calm as a gunslinger, says Shooter. Final recording sessions for the album began in 2006 after Shooter transferred the original tapes to Pro Tools. Shooter then brought the .357s into the studio in Los Angeles to cut tracks to his fathers vocals and complete the record. The tracks I originally made were a little young and messy, but they were still really wild. Now I feel like I've been given the chance to take my years of experience and match them to his, confesses Shooter. Either way, we did it and we now have a record that reflects his huge creative drive and the boundlessness of his own artistic mind."

Originally released in 1992, Peng! is the second full-length album by sonic experimentalists Stereolab. Sometimes jam-packed with thundering keyboards and driving drums, at other times ethereal, airy and light, Peng! captures this thinking man's band at the early stages of its prolific career. Emulating aspects of the Velvet Underground's rhythms as well as the Moog-happy keyboard euphonies of the early 1970s, Stereolab's far left-of-center pop vision has always been something of a love-'em-or-hate-'em proposition. Longtime fans familiar with the band's later work will find interest in this early recording as it includes the moody, cafe-styled "K-Stars" sung fetchingly in French by Leatitia Sadier. There's also the dry, rub-a-dub guitar of "Perversion," which is a dissertation over post-modern music.

Nashville's Be Your Own Pets debut album won praise, admiration and the acclaim of critics and fans around the world. They continue to give us what we want regardless, crazy fun shows and and a new album that has, in the words of Pitchfork, graduated from high-school sass to world-conquering. BYOP still reference house parties, getting in fights and the typical teenage apathy but musically the band has matured, applying tempo changes and dynamics that are more than just loud and louder.
While the follow-up, Get Awkward, is gearing up to rival the attention bestowed on their self titled debut, even more attention is now being paid to this EP of songs missing from the U.S. version of the album. Get Damaged contains three tracks banned from release in the U.S. by their major record label after being deemed offensive. Here they are in all their punk rock glory!
Burning From The Inside is the fourth release from this legendary British gothic rock outfit. Bloc Party's newest studio effort, Intimacy is a fittingly up-close title for an album that is, immediately, in-your-face and in-your-ear. The group's third album is a thrillingly radical record, bristling with percussive innovation, scorching riffs, orchestral sampledelia, and biting emotional candor. Adjudging that first ideas are often the best ideas, Bloc Party decided to record the first ten songs they wrote. What seems on paper a restrictive brief, paradoxically, proved a spur to creativity. Intimacy was produced by Paul Epworth, who produced Bloc Partys 2005 debut Silent Alarm, and by Garrett Jacknife Lee, who produced the follow-up, 2007s A Weekend In The City. The producers were at the controls for five tracks each. We felt we had unfinished business with both Garrett and Paul, says Lead singer Kele Okereke by way of explaining the splitting in half of production duties. So here they are, quicksmart, gung-ho and restless. Intimacy is the sound of a band invigorated by success but also challenged by it.

Released in 1993, The Groop Played Space Age Bachelor Pad EP is Stereolab's most experimental work, featuring the band's twin obsessions, krautrock-derived electronic minimalism and lush pop owing much to both Brian Wilson and Ray Conniff. The two styles are presented separately, in relatively short pieces, rather than combined into the lengthy sonic melanges of their other albums. Most of the brief pieces, such as the two title tracks, each subtitled "Mellow" and "Foamy," work best in the context of the whole, but some of the longer songs, particularly the sarcastic "Ronco Symphony" and "We're Not Adult-Orientated," are among the prolific band's best.

Spacegirl and Other Favorites is a collection of the Brian Jonestown Massacre's first recordings originally released only on LP in 1996. The band as it existed in 1993, just two years after forming, was already a vehicle for the twisted artistic sense of Anton Alfred Newcombe. Recorded (mostly) around the time of the group's official debut, Methodrone, most of these songs actually feature only the work of Newcombe himself, dating from a series of all-night studio experiments that proved to be his immersion in the recording process. Remastered at Abbey Road, the album is now being reissued on "a records", Anton Newcombe's own record label, on Limited Edition 180g Green vinyl of only 1,000 copies.

"Hurray for Santa Clause" opens the set with a speaker busting ode to the guy in the big red suit and "Champagne of Christmas" looks back to The Fleshtones' classic R&B roots while extolling the virtues of more than a little yuletide bubbly. Stocking Stuffer is festive enough to get you into the holiday spirit but rocks hard enough to keep the eggnog flowing through mistletoe make-out sessions and drunken sing-a-longs. If Santa is cool enough to leave this little gem in your stocking this year, then you'll finally have some Christmas music you can actually look forward to!

Julian Cope's album You Gotta Problem With Me is another protest album in the tradition of his previous releases Peggy Suicide, Jehovahkill, Autogeddon, Citizen Cain and Dark Orgasm. Unlike most records by Cope's head in the sand punk rock contemporaries, You Gotta Problem With Me deals primarily with such controversial issues as religion, xenophobia and self doubt brought on by a combination of the war in Iraq, the 9/11 bombings and the EEC's latest huge wave of migrants from former Communist countries. The album also addresses all of Cope's other long term gripes: corporate greed and the destruction of Mother Earth, misogyny and homophobia, and our apparent inability to address such essential matters due to cultural ignorance and the glaring faults in our education system. Yes, Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks are dead, but Cope's still pissed off enough to fly the flag for all three!

Never failing to intrigue, the title is a good representation of some of the wacky hijinx that will ensue when the album hits your stereo system. Vocalist Robbie explains, "The whole album is really about having a good time. We're always out to just do what we enjoy, go out on the road and make weird music. The album is just a bunch of jokes about all of the random enjoyment we have had on tour."

Anne Briggs Anne Briggs $19.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Anne Briggs' 1971 self-titled release was the first full length album from the legendary folk singer. She was a huge influence on the entire British folk-rock movement, especially on other female singers such as Sandy Denny, Jacqui McShee and Maddy Prior. This album features a strong collection of traditional folk songs and original material and it remains one of the most important releases of the British folk revival. Despite the fact that Briggs had been on the folk scene since the early '60s, this album wasn't released until 1971 due to Briggs' erratic behavior and studio fears and she would record only two more records before dropping off the scene entirely. Thankfully we have this, her first and strongest record, reissued here on 180g Vinyl LP with the original artwork.
