 Couldn't Stand The Weather
Stevie Ray Vaughan
$44.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Stevie Ray and Double Trouble's follow up to Texas Flood, Couldn't Stand the Weather further explores Vaughan's ambitious goal of modernizing electric blues. Stevie is heard here at his absolute prime; playing with passion and conviction and the tracklist is just stellar highlighted by his rousing cover of Hendrix's classic 'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)'. 2LP 180g Set including 4 bonus tracks!
With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the ‘80’s. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters and rock & roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre. Vaughan bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late '60s. For the next seven years, Stevie Ray was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence in blues and American rock & roll.
From 1978 and for the next few years, Stevie Ray Vaughan and 'Double Trouble' played the Austin area, becoming one of the most popular bands in Texas. In 1982, the band played the Montreux Festival and their performance caught the attention of David Bowie and Jackson Browne. After 'Double Trouble's' performance, Bowie asked Vaughan to play on his forthcoming album, while Browne offered the group free recording time at his Los Angeles studio, 'Downtown'; both offers were accepted. Stevie Ray laid down the lead guitar tracks for what became Bowie's 'Let's Dance' album in late 1982. Shortly afterward, John Hammond, Sr. landed Vaughan and 'Double Trouble' a record contract with Epic, and the band recorded its debut album, 'Texas Flood', in less than a week at 'Downtown'. Bowie offered Vaughan the lead guitarist role for his 1983 stadium tour, but he turned him down, preferring to play with 'Double Trouble'. Vaughan and 'Double Trouble' set off on a successful tour and quickly recorded their second album, 'Couldn't Stand The Weather', which was released in May of 1984. The album was more successful than its predecessor, reaching number 31 on the charts; by the end of 1985, the album went gold. From the blistering licks of 'Scuttle Buttin' to the bitchin blues of 'Tin Pan Alley' and the cover classic that is 'Voodoo Chile' SRV really delivers on this 1984 recording.
This is classic Stevie Ray Vaughan, now lovingly remastered from the analog tapes by the maestro cutting engineer, Ray Staff, in his Alchemy Mastering Soho studio, with five more tracks not on the original vinyl LP.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's 1983 debut album, Texas Flood, was a phenomenal success, climbing into the Top 40 and spending over half a year on the charts, which was practically unheard of for a blues recording. US LP pressing includes a the CD as well! Along with producer Steve Osborne (New Order, Happy Mondays, Doves) the band have created an album as cutting edge, distinctive & danceable as their debut album in 1979. The B-52's influence cuts a wide path through much of so-called Modern Rock-- from the low-fi efforts of nouveau garage bands and the Retro-Hip of Ultra-Lounge to the very ascendance of Dance music itself. Twenty years and 20 million albums into a career that began as a low-rent lark in Athens, Georgia, the B-52's remain the most unlikely Pop superstars ever. The first band to glorify Pop culture with an almost Warholian sense of purpose, their absurd B-movie style and off-kilter sound celebrated the weirdness lurking just beneath the surface of Americana. Consolers of the Lonely
The Raconteurs
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed

"With this release, The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all important "first week sales". We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by it's first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it...
"Another purpose was to also allow people to have their own choice as to exactly which format they would like to hear the album in IMMEDIATELY, rather than having to wait for their favorite format to become available. The band are also not releasing any version of this record that contains bonus tracks. Musically this album will be the same as the band created it no matter what format it is purchased in (The sound quality of each format however, is a different story. The Raconteurs recommend hearing it on vinyl, but the choice is of course up to the listener)...
"We hope not to confuse anyone with too many options, or deny them the formats that they like best. The Raconteurs feel very strongly that music has worth and should be treated as such. Thank you to all those who respect music in this fashion, and thank you to our label partners for working with us to get this album to fans in as many formats as possible all at once..." - The Raconteurs

 Strangers Almanac
Whiskeytown
$24.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Whiskeytown, a highly acclaimed founding band of the alt-country/No Depression scene, launched the solo career of four-time Grammy®-nominated singer-songwriter-guitarist Ryan Adams as well as that of fiddler-singer-songwriter Caitlin Cary. Now the group’s 1997 major label debut album, an overlooked gem from a band considered one of the genre’s most promising, is being released for the first time ever on vinyl.
1997's Strangers Almanac was Whiskeytown's major-label debut and the album that first introduced Ryan Adams to a wide audience, but at the same time it marked the beginning of the end for the group. When Whiskeytown went into the studio to record Strangers Almanac, the band had undergone the first of what would become a long line of personnel shakeups, and in addition to Ryan Adams, the only proper members of the group on hand for the sessions were violinist and vocalist Caitlin Cary and guitarist Phil Wandscher; session musicians filled out the lineup, while the new rhythm section, Jeff Rice (bass) and Steve Terry (drums), was hired only two weeks before recording began. Despite its chaotic creation, Strangers Almanac sounds stronger and more cohesive than its ragged but forceful indie predecessor, Faithless Street, and there's a deeper resonance in Ryan Adams' tales of wasted nights and wasted lives, such as "Inn Town," "Losering," and "Dancing with the Women at the Bar." Strangers Almanac doesn't rock as hard as Whiskeytown's earlier material, but when the guitars kick into high gear on "Yesterday's News" and "Waiting to Derail," it reveals just how good a match Ryan Adams and Wandscher were, and "Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight" and "16 Days" are as strong and moving as their country gestures got. Strangers Almanac captures Whiskeytown when they still had some business calling themselves a band rather than just Ryan Adams' backing musicians, and the glorious world-weariness of its best moments makes it a far more satisfying listen than most of what would follow once Ryan Adams struck out on his own.

Nine Lives expands upon all of the many phases and turns of Steve Windwood's lustrous career. The new songs range from the inspiring "Fly," to the burning "Dirty City" (featuring a guest appearance by long-time friend Eric Clapton, hot on the heels of their acclaimed Madison Square Garden concerts together), to the shimmering "Hungry Man." The album really brings the many facets of Winwood's musical vision together as never before. His pioneering explorations of rock, R&B, African, Latin and jazz styles blend into unique concoctions with the musician's great gifts on guitar, keyboard, the Hammond B3 organ (on which he provides all of the album's bass parts) and a voice instantly recognizable for its power and emotion. Created through a vital new writing partnership with lyricist Peter Godwin, appearances by guitarist Jose Neto, and the great playing of his road-tested band, the album builds on some of the greatest music of his impressive past.

The Pious Bird of Good Omen
Fleetwood Mac
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Fleetwood Mac's first compilation is a hodgepodge of tracks from their first two albums, singles and sessions where Peter, John and Mick backed up Chicago piano legend Eddie Boyd. Standout tracks include The Sun Is Shining, Jigsaw Puzzle Blues, Albatross and Black Magic Woman.
With songs taken from Fleetwood Mac and Mr. Wonderful, Pious Bird of Good Omen serves as a worthy 12-track compilation of the band's early Peter Green days. Climbing to number 18 in the U.K., the album managed to catapult Fleetwood Mac's version of Little Willie John's Need Your Love So Bad into the English charts for the third time, resting at number 42. The album itself was released by Blue Horizon after the group's contract with them had expired, making it one of the best routes in which to explore their mingling of Chicago and British blues. Albatross, Black Magic Woman, and I Believe My Time Ain't Long are timeless Fleetwood Mac standards, representing some of the band's best pre-Rumours work. Anyone who isn't familiar with Fleetwood Mac's origins should use Pious Bird of Good Omen as a starting point in investigating the first wave of the band, which will almost certainly lead to further interests into albums such as English Rose, Then Play On, and Kiln House, and then into later albums like Bare Trees and Penguin, which reveal subtle yet effective changes in the band's blues sound. But even aside from its purpose as a collection, Pious Bird of Good Omen makes for a terrific laid-back stroll through some of the best British blues music ever made.

The Other Side of Abbey Road
George Benson
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

George Benson, influenced by Wes Montgomery, had only just gone from being a well kept secret to a bright star in the celestial jazz firmament. Despite his tender age!! His youthful, happy-go-lucky ways may well have led him and his producer Creed Taylor to turn to this important Beatles album and – without great pathos or standing in awe - they put the music through a mincer as it were, adding a large pinch of jazz spice and a good portion of strings and Latin percussion on the way, and serving up this tasty dish to jazz freaks and beatniks. Today, almost 25 years later, this compilation, which ranges from 'Come Together' to 'The End', has lost nothing of its freshness and certainly need not shy away from comparison with the originals. These are no mere copies but little masterpieces in which the Fab Four’s immortal ideas have been taken up and re-mixed. George Benson’s singing is unobtrusive and reserved, knowing full well that he cannot hope to compete with John and Paul - but as a guitarist he certainly can stand alongside George in every respect.

Songs from Africa: Just by reading this subtitle, one might well ask oneself whether an album with such an unpretentious title would ever manage to find its way to the charts. But as soon as the disc is placed on the turntable, all doubts are dispelled that this collection of songs was actually one of the top sellers of its genre in the Sixties. The melodies, all of which stem from South African tribal songs, are treated lovingly to sensitive new arrangements. It goes without saying that the producers only wanted a minimum of background instrumentalists for these two star singers in order to preserve the original character of the songs. A little bit of guitar here, a touch of mouth organ there, and the soft rhythm of drums are all that are needed for the soft springy sound. Central to the authentic sound is a mixed chorus that mostly uses the traditional art of antiphonal singing with the soloists.

With A Little Help From My Friends
Joe Cocker
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

This man is living proof that you can be born in Sheffied and still sing like a black man from Mississipi. His performance at the Woodstock Festival made him a cult star in the New World; and the New York Times called him the best singer of all times. His name? Joe Cocker! Joe always needed a little help from his friends to get him back on his feet after an exhausting tour or a drugs trip.It was this cover version of the classic Beatles song that made Joe Cocker and his first album famous, even though the title is the penultimate number on the B side. But no one minds that because all the foregoing songs are so powerful that waiting is sheer pleasure! Cocker’s own compositions are interpolated with dusky ballads such as Peter Dello’s 'Do I Still Figure In Your Life' or Bob Dylan’s 'I Shall Be Released' so that a wide range of emotions are interpreted. Without a doubt, many listeners would define this compilation as 'the very best' of Joe Cocker.
Fortunately, the sound on this VERVE recording is situated “on the sunny side of the street”. The immediate presence of the vocal part, a fresh instrumental timbre and a pleasantly dry playhouse atmosphere all guarantee sheer delight for listeners to this collector’s item.

 Johnny Cash At San Quentin
Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash was and will always remain a country music legend. When performing he chose to wear black as a symbol of solidarity with the oppressed and those who had no rights. His chosen outlaw image was just as convincing as the train-like boom-tiddy-boom sound of his rhythm group who lent their typical sound to many of his 500 songs. At the very zenith of his career, Cash (who himself had committed a few minor offenses) had the idea of singing and playing for the bad guys behind the prison walls for nothing. Initially his suggestion to market the live recording was rejected, but finally his record company decided to release the album At Folsom Prison. The surprise success of At Folsom Prison led Columbia Records to release At San Quentin shortly afterwards. The recording, in which Cash and his combo were frequently applauded more or less at the end of each verse, exceeded all expectations. Today it is still considered to be the "Man In Black's" best live recording.

By the time Cream formed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already fairly well known, having already performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. However, it was in Cream that Clapton became a global superstar. Breaking free of the traditional rock & roll song structure for a more improvisational / jazz influenced take, the band’s long jams gave birth to a whole new approach to rock music. When their debut album Fresh Cream was released in 1966 it immediately became the standard by which all other bands of the era were judged. Includes 5 bonus tracks.

 Attack and Release
The Black Keys
$19.99 $18.99
Vinyl LP- Sealed
|
Until now, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney of the Black Keys took an extreme do-it-yourself approach to record making, hunkering down in a basement studio or setting up equipment in one of the abandoned factories of their native Akron, Ohio. Their modus operandi was more seance than session. With a minimal set of tools, they conjured up a big, swaggering blues-rock sound, seemingly drawn from some distant time and place yet too weirdly original to ever be called retro. As Rolling Stone put it in a review of their 2006 Nonesuch debut, Magic Potion, "Pure blues rock of this caliber is really timeless."
For this album, however, the Black Keys decided not to go it alone: Attack and Release is the result of one of the most audacious and eagerly awaited collaborations in alternative rock history. As producer, Auerbach and Carney chose Danger Mouse, the mega-eclectic sonic mastermind behind the Grammy Award-winning Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere and its multi-format hit, "Crazy", as well as the music-industry provocateur who created the mother of all mash-ups, The Grey Album. The Black Keys also deigned to work at an established studio, albeit one within driving distance of Akron. Suma Recording, a legendary spot in northeast Ohio renowned for its supply of great vintage gear, provided just the right ambience for the guys. As Carney put it, with genuine affection, Suma "smells like a moldy cabin and looks like a haunted house."
On Attack and Release, Danger Mouse is more creative co-conspirator than traditional figure behind the boards. He doesn't radically alter the duo's sound so much as coax out more of its inherent soulfulness, groove and bittersweet emotion. Two versions of "Remember When" illustrate how the duo can swing easily from smoldering ballad to thrashing rocker. "I'm more pleased with the sound of this record than any one we've ever made," says Carney, and Auerbach concurs: "We never let it all go like we did for this one, anything was game. It was just fun to make, and that's why I think it's so successful." The band adds more instrumentation to their mix, including piano, organ and moog synthesizer. Danger Mouse fashions subtle special effects, like the ghostly background choir that surfaces on the moody "I Got Mine", which sounds as if it were samples from some old Warner Bros. cartoon. The Black Keys also invited in a few special guests: guitarist Marc Ribot and clarinetist-flautist (and Pat's uncle) Ralph Carney, both veterans of Tom Waits' band and players on countless avant-rock/jazz/noise session. Jessica Lea Mayfield a/k/a Chittlin, an impressive 18 year-old bluegrass/country singer from Kent, Ohio, sings alongside a heart-breakingly plaintive Auerbauch on the slow-dance final cut, "Things Ain't Like They Used to Be"

 Transformer
Lou Reed
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Appearing just a few months after the somewhat unsuccessful release of Lou Reed’s fairly underground first album and rocketing straight into the charts, this production had two British guardian angels to help it on its way, namely David Bowie and Mick Ronson, both of whom obviously knew how to steer Reed’s songwriting qualities into safe waters, without watering down his biting sarcasm and humorous provocation. And that’s why grating guitar rock ('Vicious') is found alongside a bittersweet, tender ballad ('Perfect Day') and even an old-time jazz parody ('Goodnight Ladies') which is sung with a tongue a heavy as lead. Why then compare this highly original music mix with others, when it’s so much easier to hear this record for what it is - a truly cult album?

The Who’s legendary third album, The Who Sell Out, released in 1967, was a concept album of songs made into advertisements, with the cover art featuring members of the band pretending to endorse various products. The band actually was doing a few commercials at the time, so this album was intended to poke fun at that. This was the first pop album ever to not list the song titles on its cover. Featuring 10 bonus tracks from the deluxe edition plus the reproduction of the poster contained in the first 1000 copies.

 Days of Future Past
Moody Blues
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Compositions and arrangements for pop group and symphony orchestra belong to the British pop scene like the Queen to the Commonwealth. The Moody Blues, one of a seemingly never-ending number of groups which sprang up in the North of England, ventured early into new territory in that they undertook an ambitious project which sought to mediate between classical tradition and modern music and which might very well be described as real “crossover”.
Their very first long-playing record, made in 1967, was a smash hit right from the start. The album Days of Future Passed jumped into the US charts within a few weeks and remained there for almost two years, bringing the group their first Gold Disc. As the title suggests, the six individual recordings fit together within the programmatic framework of a passing day. This synthesis of orchestral music and original “flower power sound”, where the past melts with the future, results in Nights in White Satin, a timeless super-hit. What is more, the brilliant tonal definition of DECCA’s patented “Deramic Sound System” does not cease to amaze and certainly does justice to this extraordinary recording.

It isn't hard to make the case for Patti Smith as a punk rock progenitor based on her debut album, which anticipated the new wave by a year or so: the simple, crudely played rock & roll, featuring Lenny Kaye's rudimentary guitar work, the anarchic spirit of Smith's vocals, and the emotional and imaginative nature of her lyrics - all prefigure the coming movement as it evolved on both sides of the Atlantic.

Drawing on the hardships and joys of their own lives and a musical history ranging from old world Celtic to modern day punk rock, the seven members of Flogging Molly have developed a charm and an ease over the years that makes them one of the most accessible bands performing today.
More mature yet retaining the immediacy that marks all of their work, the band's new album Float may find the widest audience acceptance of any Flogging Molly album to date. Hard charging tunes “Paddy’s Lament” and “You Won’t Make a Fool Out of Me” give way, as listeners have come to expect, to more sober ruminations on tracks like “Float.” The overall effect is a symphonic layering of sound that possesses a unique rhythmic flow from boisterous to bereaved and back again. Long time fans and new discoverers will be equally astounded.

 Caravanserai
Santana
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
To attempt to categorize Carlos Santana’s music is, for the prophets of rock music, rather like dancing on the edge of a volcano. While the New York Times acclaimed the band as a "reincarnation of Dizzy Gillespie’s Cuban-jazz big band from the end of the Forties," Rolling Stone spoke of a "methadrine trip without visions." Organ-player Gregg Rolie offered a very simple explanation of the origins of the highly differentiated sound colouring and the throb and chirp of the Afro-Cuban polyrhythms: he succinctly remarked that, "each member of the multi-cultural band just played the music which he had grown up with."
It's already evident from the first number on Caravanserai, with its sounds of nature, twisted rhythms, and little snatches of melody, which as in several other titles remains spellbinding even without the fascinating drive of Santana’s lead-sound. Of course there is plenty of solo material on the guitar which manifests itself in exuberant improvisations with a fusion of rock, salsa and jazz elements. When listening to this well-oiled rhythm machine, one gets the impression that this unique band has stretched itself to its limits, and it is not by mere coincidence that they split up shortly afterwards. What has remained is one of the most powerful Santana records ever made.

 Can't Buy A Thrill
Steely Dan
$34.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
Two names in particular spring to mind in connection with Steely Dan: Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The two men discovered while at college at the end of the Sixties that they shared musical tastes, although they played in different bands. They subsequently formed a songwriter duo before making their breakthrough in 1972 under the name Steely Dan (a name which came from William Burrough’s novel The Naked Lunch) with their debut album Can’t Buy A Thrill. This LP remained for over a year in the Billboard charts, and the single taken from the album, Do It Again, leapt into the Top Ten. This was just the beginning of an extraordinarily successful career which lasted until the temporary disbandment of the group in 1981 (a brand new album entitled Two Against Nature has appeared since then). Every one of their seven studio albums was crowned with a Gold or Platinum Disc. Can’t Buy A Thrill is not as “polished” as later albums, such as Aja or Gaucho for example, but their inimitable mixture of melodic rock, shot through with soul, jazzy rhythms and ambitious instrumental solos made Fagen and Becker stand out from all the others right from the very start (just compare them with the Eagles or the Doobie Brothers!). Apart from the now “classical” songs such as Dirty Work, Midnight Cruiser, Reelin’ The Years and of course the unforgettable Do It Again, it goes without saying that all the others titles are endowed with all those qualities which make Steely Dan so unique.

 Crime of the Century
Supertramp
$37.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Even before Pink Floyd’s thrust their musical message of protest, the mechano-hit The Wall, under the noses of the establishment and the established, the melancholic songs of the group Supertramp had long found their way into the hearts of the young who had been shaken by one crisis after the other.
The LP with its surrealistic, chilling cover and eye-raising title was a success all over the world and even the sternest critics showered it with praise. “Their music just floods the senses; it is as though someone has put on all the good pop records of the 60s and 70s at the same time”, lamented the music magazine SOUNDS helplessly – totally fascinated by their sound.Crime Of The Century provided plenty of fodder for the hit charts and radio DJs. And even today, the balladesque collage School with its bloodcurdling harmonica introduction, the pearl-like Rhodes piano chords in the rocking Bloody well right, and the childlike, mocking Dreamer are the epitome of the pop cult of the Seventies.
The recording quality of this disc is excellent, and what is more – it has been judged the very best album that the English quintet ever produced.
Celebrate the record’s 25th birthday with a fantastic vinyl re-release fresh from the press.

It was due or die for Toto on the group's fourth album, and they rose to the challenge. Largely dispensing with anonymous studio rock that had characterized their first three releases, the band worked harder on its melodies, made sure its simple lyrics treated romantic subjects, augmented Bobby Kimball's vocals by having other group members sing, brought in ringers like Timothy B. Schmit, and slowed down the tempo to what came to be known as 'power ballad' pace. Most of all, they wrote some hit songs.

The album incorporates a lot of samples and synthesizers and drum tracks meld seamlessly with violins and pianos. Haunting, emotional, moody, raw and modern, Third is an incredible record.
Portishead was formed in Bristol, U.K. in 1991 by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. After releasing a short film entitled To Kill A Dead Man and its accompanying music, they were signed to a record deal with Go! Beat Records.
Portishead’s first album, Dummy, was released in 1994 and the first single was “Numb”. The album was successful in both Europe and the United States (where it sold more than 150,000 copies even before the band toured there). Dummy spawned two hit singles, “Glory Box” and “Sour Times,” and went on to win the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 1995. After their initial success, Portishead withdrew from the spotlight for three years until their second and self titled album, Portishead, was released in 1997. The album’s sound differed from Dummy, the main differences being that much of the music was composed and played by the band, not sampled from records, and had a grainy, harsher sound. Three singles, “Cowboys,” “Over” and “All Mine” were released, the latter achieving a Top 10 placing in the U.K. In 1997, the band performed a one-off show with strings by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Roseland Ballroom in New York. A live album primarily featuring these new orchestral arrangements of the group’s songs was released in 1998. For the next few years, the band members concentrated on solo and other pursuits, until in February 2005, the band appeared live for the first time in seven years at the Tsunami Benefit Concert in Bristol.

"Violence begins to mend what was broken," is not only a lyric taken from Lamb of God's song "Omerta," it's a theme that's emblazoned throughout Ashes of the Wake both in message and music, inspired as much by personal trial as by world politics. Lamb of God showcases their 80's thrash roots on Ashes of the Wake by featuring solos from both Testament and Megadeth. At the same time the band plows forward here sampling from the new, the old and adding their own menacing footprint.

The highly anticipated sophomore album from the Sword has arrived. With Gods Of The Earth, the band prepare to build upon the foundation they laid with their critically acclaimed debut Age Of Winters and continue to lead modern day metal's forward change. They are back here with another dose of their stoner tainted metal wall of groove and from the moment the album’s lead track “The Sundering” explodes, it is immediately apparent that they've upped the ante on a sound all their own. More ambitious, more accomplished and simply bigger, Gods of the Earth’s huge, mountaintop-friendly hooks, thunderous drumming and oceanic bass lines cut through the air like a scythe, while the ominous vocals of frontman J.D. Cronise weave fantastical tales rife with myth and mythology. Waves of powerful riffs and low-end thunder dominate songs such as the immediate “Maiden, Mother & Crone,” “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians,” “Under the Boughs” and the paralyzing “The Black River." You can tell the band is from Texas because their sound is as big as the state!

So popular was CCR worldwide that by 1970 the group was consistently scoring hits on both the A and B sides of its singles, a feat previously accomplished by Elvis Presley and the Beatles. This LP, released in November 1969, proved no exception, containing "Fortunate Son" and "Down On The Corner," the latter becoming one of CCR's biggest hits to date. Fogerty's fine gritty voice and his tight vocal overdubbing are standouts, along with his excellent renditions of "Cotton Fields" and "Midnight Special." Willy And The Poorboys remained on the Billboard charts for 60 weeks, scoring as high as No. 3 and garnering the group's third platinum LP.

One of the defining albums of thrash metal, the 1986 album Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton. Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. The striding "Battery," the darkly lit "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," as well as the complex instrumental, "Orion," all gave powerful testament to the band's ever-developing skill and vision. An album with lengthly arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes) and an overall eight song onslaught that clocks in at over an hour was unheard of in metal at the time and it confirmed that Metallica was at a different level, a legendary one! In all its glory here on 180g Vinyl LP!
