 Whites Off Earth Now
Cowboy Junkies
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP sealed
|
Upon its release in 1986, the Cowboy Junkies’ riveting debut sounded like nothing else at the time. Gloriously, it still doesn’t. Haunting, harrowing, eerie, and gorgeous, the soft-toned album reinterprets eight classic blues in a ghostly manner that combines Delta traditions, European classical minimalism, roots country, and thoroughly understated ambience.
The album’s spare, hyper-realistic approach stood as a proud contrast (and still does) to the overly polished, studio-slick blues, pop, and rock efforts mainlined out of high-tech studios. Recorded in just seven hours with an ambisonic microphone, Whites Off Earth Now!! is one of the most acoustically resplendent and dynamically rich records ever cut. The Canadian band’s intentional attempt to reclaim purity has made WOEN a cult classic and audiophile favorite.
Comprised of three siblings and a bassist friend, Cowboy Junkies stuck to songs that they had been playing live since 1985 when it came time to solidify their existence with an actual album. They favored potent standards such as Robert Johnson’s “Me and the Devil Blues” and “Crossroads,” John Lee Hooker’s “Decoration Day” and “Forgive Me,” Bruce Springsteen’s “State Trooper,” and Big Joe Williams’ “Baby Please Don’t Go.” In the Junkies’ hands, these tunes take on newfound ethereal power and riveting danger. Sung in a hushed lullaby voice by singer Margo Timmins, lyrical meanings change and emotional chills increase. Subtle illusions of calmness hold steady, but droning guitars and short bursts of bruised feedback generate a tension that drives these songs into our subconscious.
Disgusted with what they rightly perceived as the contrived, overly processed sound of 80s recordings, the group agreed to let producer/engineer Peter Moore experiment with an unconventional recording technique. The decision proved a stroke of genius. Set up in an uncomfortably hot garage padded with carpets and materials to dampen echoes, the foursome gathered around a single Caltrec Ambisonic Microphone—the quartet recorded direct-to-two-track. The results are magical, the natural and unimpeded sound that audiophiles dream about.
Mastered from the original tapes by Mobile Fidelity, this numbered limited-edition 180-gram LP captures every last finite detail and note. Microdynamics and sonic cues abound. The sticking together of Timmins’ lips from the heat and sweat right before she begins to sing on both Johnson tunes; the sound of drummer Pete Timmins putting his sticks down at the end of “I’ll Never Get Out of These Blues Alive”; myriad creaks, shuffles, and vibrations. What was a stunning headphone record is now an unreal stereo experience. This is what in-the-room presence is all about; albums don’t get more realistic-sounding. The sense of space is staggering.

 Mountain Battles
The Breeders

This Spring sees the release of the first Breeders album since 2002's Title TK. By turns goofy, groovy, melancholy, strung-out, catchy, atmospheric and at times impossibly lovely, Mountain Battles underlines that Kim Deal is a songwriter and a musician of rare intuition. Her songs move from offhand charm to emotional truth with casual grace, balancing scuffed-up noise against fraught silence; timeless structures against strange new shapes. And throughout, of course, there's Kim's unique voice; languid, urgent, bruised and beautiful. In short, Mountain Battles captures all the bittersweet electricity of classic Breeders records like Pod and Last Splash, and still manages to break new ground. Mountain Battles was recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Erika Larson at Stagg Street, Manny Nieto at Manny's Studio, at Refraze in Dayton and by Ben Mumphrey in the Basement. The band are : Kelley Deal, Kim Deal and Title TK veterans Jose Medeles and Mando Lopez. Vinyl Version includes MP3 coupon and Deluxe print 28 page booklet.

Jesse Sykes

Jesse Sykes is hard to pin down--and that's a good thing indeed. She overlaps with current trends, but is completely her own artist. There are elements of alt-country, psych-folk, and singer-songwriter-troubadour, but also others that add alluring breadth to her sound, most notably in the band's penchant for drawing upon the best aspects of Haight-Ashbury ballroom sonics. "How Will We Know" swirls and builds with guitar tones that evoke John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Barry Melton (Country Joe & the Fish). Sykes has taken those sounds (which were often the best part of the era's rather feeble cowboy machismo) and added finesse, poetics, and a woman's vantage point. Her lyrics are rife with cold winds and loneliness, but never without hope, even if that element is handled by the warm glow of the music. The band is a sympathetically balanced entity with supple power and grace. They move between loud and soft without the now cliched extreme dramatics originally pioneered by the Pixies--another example of Sykes eschewing trends and forging her own path.

We Lost The Skyline: Live In Store In Orlando
Porcupine Tree

On the 4th of October, 2007 Porcupine Tree arrived for an in-store performance and signing session at Park Avenue CDs in Orlando, FL, with 200 fans in attendance. Although it was originally planned that the full band would play, lack of space dictated that it was only the 2 guitarists/singers Steven Wilson and John Wesley who delivered an impromptu performance, including many songs rarely (if ever) played by the band, making for a very special and intimate show. Fortunately this one-off performance was captured by Full Sail (with their remote recording facility) and the complete 8 song, 33 minute show is now being released in a digipak sleeve created by photographer Lasse Hoile and designer Carl Glover.
Porcupine Tree is unquestionably one of the most difficult-to-categorize and innovative bands working today. The music is breathtaking, ranging from psychedelic trip-hop to progressive metal, and a compendium of other sounds and genres in between. The band is fronted by Steven Wilson, who is well-known for his work producing other artists, from Swedish progressive death metal group Opeth, to Norwegian chanteuse Anja Garbarek. He also has several other projects, invcluding No-Man, Bass Communion, and the highly acclaimed collaboration with Israeli musician Aviv Geffen, Blackfield.
Porcupine Tree was founded as a self-indulgent creative outlet for Wilson, and the first major release was In the Sunday of Life in 1992, an album of psychedelia and studio experiments which bears little relation to the band's current sound. From there, Wilson expanded the sound, creating the progressive rock/ambient trance fusion on the 30-minute long single Voyage34. One of the only constants in Porcupine Tree music is how it continues to evolve and confront the expectations of the band's fans from album to album. In late 1993, the solo project became a band, as Colin Edwin (bass), Chris Maitland (drums), and Richard Barbieri (keyboards) wre recruited to enable Porcupine Tree to perform live. Richard had previously been a member of one of the most experimental '80s bands, Japan. The first real band album recorded was Dignify in 1996, which was followed by Stupid Dream (1999), a breakthrough album which saw the band move into a more song-oriented direction. Lightbulb Sun continued along that song-oriented track, but, never content to rest on their laurels, Porcupine Tree changed course again for their next release, shuffling their lineup for the first and only time to date. Chris Maitland departed and was replaced by Gavin Harrison in 2002, as the band signed a new international recording deal with Lava/Atlantic Records.
Their, two major label album releases In Absentia and Deadwing were heavier than previous releases and were able to find favor with older fans and introduced Porcupine Tree to a whole new audience. The band also firmly established itself as being on the cutting edge in the audiophile/surround world: In Absentia and Deadwing were both released as 5.1 DVD-audio editions by DTS Entertainment, and each won the Surround Music Award for Best 5.1 Mix in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
In late 2005, Porcupine Tree re-signed to Atlantic Records for the US, but moved to the highly successful independent rock label Roadrunner for Europe. In Sept. 2006, the band released its first DVD, the live Arriving Somewhere filmed in Chicago during the Deadwing world tour. The DVD was critically acclaimed for both its visual quality, as well as the 5.1 mix. Reviewing the DVD, Sound and Vision magazine concluded "When it comes to surround sound, Porcupine Tree is in a league by itself."

 Walk It Off

Walk It Off is the Minneapolis-based band’s first record since 2006’s widely lauded The Loon, which established the band; Josh Grier (guitar, vocals), Jeremy Hanson (drums), Matt Kretzman (keyboards), Erik Appelwick (bass guitar) as one to watch. Tapes ‘N Tapes’ signature sound is distinctly their own concoction; the shaky vocals, the bursts of low-fi guitars and the haunting keyboard refrains. Whether it is on the opening track, “Le Ruse,” where the first thing you hear is one guitar, crackling like the amp might short-circuit or the last, on the swaggering, “The Dirty Dirty,” with its driving guitar and unrelenting rhythm, the band continue to hone their own brand of jittery rock that has found the sweet spot where experimental song structure meets melodic accessibility. The London based rock duo known as The Kills subtly and organically fuses pop, glam, blues, art-punk and hip-hop in a manner that darts between light and dark, funny and morbid, experimental yet charming. Their third full length, Midnight Boom is a short, sharp twelve track album of sensual, fresh and atmospheric songs that reminds us that no one on earth makes rock 'n' roll quite like The Kills.
The band worked with Spank Rock producer Alex Epton (aka Armani XXXchange), to try and create a grittier, fuller sound. "We wanted to create modern playground songs, with really upbeat melodies and dark lyrics, like kids used to sing during recess," says guitarist Jamie Hince.

 Living With War-In The Beginning
Neil Young
$29.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

A stripped-down, unpolished version of 2006's Living With War, with choir and overdubs having been jettisoned, delivers an even more powerful, jacked-up conduit of the message. Recorded live in the studio in only two weeks with sparse musical support, it's hardly subtle themes and lyrics (Let's Impeach The President) are Young's personal shock and awe, commenting, as he had swiftly done on the 1969 Kent State killings ("Ohio"), on the political turmoil in the U.S. and it's war on terrorism. The original version fanned the flames and both doves and hawks were glad when it faded from the news. This new version is bound to keep the heat up for some time. Mastered and cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood from the original demo mix master tapes gives this compendium edition a rawer, more edgy sound - similar to other recent NY releases. Additionally, all new gatefold artwork makes this package a natural, "must have" alternate version of the first release of "Living With War" in 2006. ALL Classic / Reprise Neil Young vinyl issues including LWW...In the Beginning, are pressed only on Classic's proprietary 200g Super Vinyl Profile. Don't even hesitate - just buy it!

Acclaimed Kiwi novelty band Flight of the Conchords follow the release of their six-track Grammy Award winning CD/EP The Distant Future with their full-length record album debut, the conveniently titled Flight of the Conchords (which, not at all coincidentally is also the name of their HBO television series). Produced by Mickey Petralia (Beck Midnight Vultures, Ladytron Light & Sound) in Los Angeles, New York and Wellington, the album features fully fleshed-out and professionally recorded versions of Flight of the Conchords concert and television favorites. And its release finally renders pointless all the inexpert fan-made audio transfers (the modern day equivalent of holding a microphone up to the television speaker and shouting at your mom to be quiet), which have bloated hard drives the world over. The songs are heard here in expanded but reverent arrangements. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement’s trademark acoustic guitars lead the blitz, backed by a diverse array of instrumentation and production technique. And, the album sounds legitimate and musically, it’s incredible, but, as Shakespeare said, “Does it funny?” Happily, yes. If amazing, delightful and hilarious is your idea of funny, then prepare for undisappointment! These 15 songs pay homage to Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments. To be blunt, if you can’t find a rire ou sourire in the FSL study guide of opening track, “Foux du Fafa”, then, please notice, vous êtes malade.

Monade's third album Monstre Cosmics is their most assured and distinct yet. What initially began as a Laetitia Sadier side project from her main outfit, Stereolab, has blossomed into a full-fledged unit that stands on its own post-rock legs. With its combination of French lounge, Krautrock, film music, retro-futuristic synths and lilting singing, Monade's sound bears no small resemblance to Stereolab's, but that's not a bad thing, and neither is the group's third full-length Monstre Cosmic. Whether on the gear-shifting psych-lounge excursion of "Regarde" or the burbling atmospheric rock of "Elle Topo" (complete with Ennio Morricone-influenced intro), Monade shows that it's not afraid to stick to the territory it knows best. But that territory is plenty adventurous as is, and Monstre Cosmic is brimming with skill, authority and a command of sonic beauty.

Newton Faulkner is a bona fide pop star in his native U.K. where radio presence, great press and a thrilling live show drove Hand Built By Robots to the top spot on the album-sales chart upon its release there last summer. The 23-year old singer/songwriter makes music full of serendipity and happenstance, coincidence and luck. As its title suggests, Hand Built By Robots contains acoustic music for the digital age. Faulkner croons in a voice shaped by years spent listening to Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Tom Waits and plays guitar with a distinctive tap-pick-and-strum technique that allows him to use the instrument as a guitar, bass and drums all at once. Call it folk-pop for the future, and get ready to hear quite a lot of it as Faulkner goes about spreading his success to these shores.

2002 was a hell of a year for The Black Keys, the minimalist two-man blues-rock outfit from Akron, Ohio. They released their debut album The Big Come-Up on the tiny Alive label that year and garnered barely-contained raves in Rolling Stone, Spin, The Village Voice and MOJO. One listen to The Big Come Up, a startling raw slab of juke-joint blues, validates the band's rapid ascent from playing for no money on the bottom of the bill at Cleveland's Beachland Tavern to selling out blistering headline dates and being invited to open for the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and elder Ohio statesmen Guided By Voices. Their vintage concoction of Dan Auerbach's genuinely fine, powerful blues vocals and busy reverb soaked guitar riffing mixed with Patrick Carney's earthy drumming is what makes The Big Come Up a cool and raunchy electric blues record with a vigor and imagination that's way fresher than any standard bar band blues-rockers with slicker execution and pencient for blues cliches. "This lovely set of intimately arranged and meticulously recorded covers, originally issued in 2000, is precisely the kind of semi-obscure album in need of a quality all-analog reissue…The superbly natural sound produced by this record is what spending big bucks on an audio system is all about. Set the volume appropriately and Ms. Jones'll draw you into the studio for a personal song recital…This is one to savor." Music = 9/11; Sound = 10/11 – Michael Fremer, www.musicangle.com
"…this effort from 2000 shows Jones conjuring such magic with the material that she deserves as much attention for reworking standards as do Carly Simon or Linda Ronstadt. Kicking off with Steely Dan's 'Show Biz Kids,' and with appearances by Joe Jackson and Ben Folds, among the highpoints is the Beatles' 'For No One' that ranks as among the finest Beatles cover ever. And considering that they number in the tens of thousands, that's about as high as praise gets." Recording = 5/5; Performances = 5/5 Album of the Month – Ken Kessler, Hi-Fi News, April 2008
"The Rickie Lee Jones 45rpm is AWESOME UNREAL AMAZING!!! I have to get a backup copy. I'll play this one to death." – Danny Kaey, Positive-Feedback Online
Not since Billie Holiday has there been a vocalist who so completely transforms a song into her own. On It's Like This, eclectic folkie Rickie Lee Jones envelops standards, showtunes, '70s soul, and even slick jazz-rock, interpreting them with her familiar childlike, breathy shouts. In a very similar vein as 1991's Pop Pop, Jones pulls together a collection of diverse songs from throughout the 20th century and gives them a sparse, fragile spin, kind of like Diana Krall and Bjork sharing coffee at an all-night diner. Produced by Bruce Brody (who has also worked with Maria McKee and Bette Midler), this album is really a showcase for the dynamic vocalist - her voice pitching and yawing like a sloop far out at sea. Several notable artists scatter themselves unobtrusively throughout the album like Joe Jackson, Ben Folds, John Pizzarelli, and Taj Mahal; each lend a subtle bass line or harmony vocal, cautiously not stepping on any of Jones' delicate lines.

 Konk
The Kooks
$19.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Konk is the 2008 release of their second album. The Kooks are an English indie rock band from Brighton. A dynamic album where every song has its own little world. While 'Gap' is classic Kooks, a song like 'Shine On' finds Luke exploring hitherto unchartered lyrical territory over the loveliest of melodies. It's destined to become another lynchpin in The Kooks' live set. Then there's 'Always Where I Need To Be' a tumbling rocker with a refrain that might just be the catchiest thing they've ever done. 'Sway', meanwhile, provides an early album highlight. ''Sway' is one I always go back to,' says Luke. 'Hugh's guitar solo is genius! I don't even know how he did it, even though I was there.' Produced by Tony Hoffer, the album is named after the London studio where it was recorded, which is property of Ray Davies.

Do It! is the fifth album by the band Clinic. They are a Liverpool based indie rock band noted for their often fast-paced, eclectic sound. Their distinguishing sound can commonly be recognized by their prominent use of vintage keyboards/organs, most notably the Philips Philicorda, and peculiar off-scale chord progressions. The band's official website once stated they sound "like no other band". The band is made up of: Ade Blackburn - keyboard, melodica, vocals, Brian Campbell - bass, flute, vocals, Hartley - guitar, clarinet, keyboards and Carl Turney - drums, piano, backing vocals.

2008 studio album from the legendary goth rockers. It is virtually impossible to imagine the last 30 years of rock music without the influence of Bauhaus. They have inspired countless bands and have mesmerized the masses with their ability to be simultaneously sparse, dark, Anthemic, and Glam. With their final LP, entitled Go Away White, Daniel Ash, David J, Kevin Haskins, and Peter Murphy have created an album as exciting and relevant as their first releases that left a permanent mark on the face of music. Echoes of Bauhaus have been heard in the work of their heirs and imitators for the past few decades and 25 years after their last studio release the band have returned with one last undiluted glimpse into their world. These songs will inspire countless others and ensure that Bauhaus will never truly die.

In Search Of The Lost Chord
The Moody Blues
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
In Search of the Lost Chord is the album on which the Moody Blues discovered drugs and mysticism as a basis for songwriting and came up with a compelling psychedelic creation, filled with songs about Timothy Leary and the astral plane and other psychedelic-era concerns. They dumped the orchestra this time out in favor of Mike Pinder's Mellotron, which was a more than adequate substitute, and the rest of the band joined in with flutes, sitar, tablas, and cellos, the playing of which was mostly learned on the spot. The whole album was one big experiment to see how far the group could go with any instruments they could find, thus making this album a rather close cousin to the Beatles' records of the same era. It is all beautiful and elegant, and 'Legend of a Mind''s chorus about 'Timothy Leary's dead/Oh, no — he's outside, looking in' ended up anticipating reality; upon his death in 1996, Leary was cremated and launched into space on a privately owned satellite, with the remains of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry (another '60s pop culture icon) and other well-heeled clients.

On The Threshold Of A Dream
The Moody Blues
$29.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl Import LP - Sealed
|
n the Threshold of a Dream was the first album that the Moody Blues had a chance to record and prepare in a situation of relative calm, without juggling tour schedules and stealing time in the studio between gigs — indeed, it was a product of what were almost ideal circumstances, though it might not have seemed that way to some observers. The Moody Blues had mostly exhausted the best parts of the song bag from which their two preceding albums, Days of Future Passed and In Search of the Lost Chord, had been drawn, and as it turned out, even the leftover tracks from those sessions wouldn't pass muster for their next long-player project — but those albums had both been hits, and charted well in America as well as England, and had overlapped with a pair of hit singles, 'Nights in White Satin' and 'Tuesday Afternoon,' on both sides of the Atlantic. Their success had earned them enough consideration from Decca Records that they could work at their leisure in the studio through all of January and most of February of 1969; what's more, with two LPs under their belt, they now had a much better idea of what they could accomplish in the studio, and write songs with that capability in mind. Equally important, they'd just come off of an extensive U.S. tour (opening for Cream) and had learned a lot in the course of concertizing over the previous year, achieving a much bolder yet tighter sound instrumentally as well as vocally, and they could now write to and for that sound as well. So this album is oozing with bright, splashy creative flourishes in two seemingly contradictory directions that somehow come together as a valid whole. On the original LP's first side (which was the more rock-oriented side), the songs 'Lovely to See You,' 'Send Me No Wine,' 'To Share Our Love,' and 'So Deep Within You' all featured killer guitar hooks (electric and acoustic) and fills by Justin Hayward; beautiful, muscular bass from John Lodge; and vocal hooks everywhere. It's also a surprisingly hard-rocking album considering the amount of overdubbing that went into perfecting the songs, including cellos, wind and reed instruments, and lots of vocal layers — yet it even found room to display a pop-soul edge on 'So Deep Within You' (a number that the Four Tops later recorded).

Tapes 'n Tapes have earned the love of music bloggers, music buyers, and fans across the country, selling over 10,000 copies in the US since the November 1st release of 'The Loon' on their self run record label. Their sound is the basement indie of Pavement, the eclecticism of Talking Heads, and the frenzied power of The Pixies, but with a vital, thrilling, and unique blast of energy and melody that has rarely been combined before. 'At SXSW, two of the most extraordinary bands defied categories and tore apart verse-chorus-verse forms. Tapes 'n Tapes were rhapsodic, with songs that metamorphosed from reticence to frenzy and back' - The NY Times.

 Odelay: Deluxe Edition
Beck
$79.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 4 LP Box Set Sealed
|
Originally released in June of 1996, Beck’s second major label album, Odelay, was his chance to prove that he was no one-hit wonder. His major label debut, Mellow Gold, had produced the hit single “Loser,” but there was a sense he hadn’t quite won over everyone and it was hard to tell exactly who Beck was. Was he joking? Was he serious? Was he simply some sort of beat-poet novelty act? With Odelay, he enlisted the Dust Brothers, most famous at this point for being behind the boards for the Beastie Boys’ 1989 sonic-collage opus Paul’s Boutique. Together they crafted a classic. In honor of it's 10th Anniversary it is now being released in this incredible Deluxe Edition 180g 4LP Box Set which includes a 24 page booklet! An absolute must have for any Beck fan!

 Pop Pop
Rickie Lee Jones
$39.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Pop Pop is an eclectic collection of covers from one of jazz-pop's most eclectic performers. Rickie Lee Jones cradles each of these songs with her pleading, gentle voice, backing them with subtle orchestration courtesy of notable performers including Robben Ford, Joe Henderson and Charlie Haden. Her attention to love songs of the '40s and '50s demonstrates almost a longing for simpler times and simpler love, and these qualities are echoed in the treatment of songs like "My One and Only Love" and "I'll Be Seeing You." Her subdued take on the psychedelic Jimi Hendrix screamer "Up From the Skies" is slowed to a bluesy acoustic number, while the bratty refrain from Peter Pan's "I Won't Grow Up" seems blushingly sweet. Pop Pop aptly displays Jones' ability to evolve and her unwillingness to be pinned down into one category.

Sir Thomas Sanders and his one-man act Tap Tap deliver a gloriously messy, ebullient, shiny pop album here filled with joyfully noisy guitars, crashy drums and lovely harmonies. The songs feel like they are held together just by the skin of their teeth as if they could fall apart or maybe just explode around every corner. Lanzafame is just about everything it needs to be; quick, enjoyable and a fine twist on the continuing late-'70s/early-'80s revival.

 Exploded Drawing
Polvo
$16.99
Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
Originally released in April of 1996, Exploded Drawing was generally received as Polvo’s White Album, the moment when the band finally kicked off its shoes, cracked the studio windows and unleashed a long suite of songs showcasing the band’s true range. This double LP gives it all up: paranoid blues rants, Delhi-via-the Ozarks hoedowns, spaghetti western lopers, carnivalesque boogie, a blazing finale and as always, that guitar sound. It’s just a little off, twisted, tweaked, coming at us from some realm we still haven’t located yet and probably never will.

After a brief interruption, Polvo reconvened to record Shapes, their final album, released in September of 1997. The record continues in the vein of Exploded Drawing, weaving plaintive vibes, eastern passages and rip roarin’ freakouts in a pastiche eluding basic classification. The opening track “Enemy Insects” is a subterranean lurker; shimmering stabs of guitar competing with discordant chugs. “Downtown Dedication” is a dazed panoptic of old soul, farfisa leads, wahwah washes and a touch of Jimi. “El Rocio” serves as an epilogue of sorts for the band; a somber, chilling instrumental that wanders curiously as it showcases Polvo’s full palette, every ringing tone and chiming string.

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP + DVD-V - Sealed

Recorded live in concert on July 9, 2007, Gossip - Live In Liverpool brilliantly captures and brings into focus the stunning ferocity, energy and intensity at the heart of the band's groundbreaking meld of sound and politics. This incendiary concert showcase breaks out definitive performances of Gossip's signature tunes including the band's UK #1 Indie chart-topping smash, "Standing In The Way Of Control"; the UK Top 40 hit, "Listen Up"; and the #3 UK Indie track, "Jealous Girls" in addition to delightfully provocative covers of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper" and Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody?"
Gossip - Live In Liverpool includes a DVD-V of the concert, lensed by documentary filmmaker and music video director Lance Bangs (Sonic Youth, Green Day, R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, Kanye West, Pavement, Mike Watt and more). Also includes a limited edition 18’’ x 24’’ poster.
Gossip released its first full-length collection of songs, That's Not What I Heard, in January of 2001 and its successor, Arkansas Heat, in 2002 after touring with the White Stripes and Sleater-Kinney. Gossip reached a threshold of transcendence with its last studio collection, 2006's Standing In The Way Of Control, which shot to #1 on the UK indie albums chart. The album's title track became a UK hit in its own right after becoming the unofficial theme music for the popular British television teen drama, Skins. Standing In The Way Of Control charted on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums and European Hot 100 Singles charts. The single has sold more than 150,000 copies in the UK.

 Live In Holland 1971

7" Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed

When the Byrds cut the two songs featured on Live In Holland 1971 they may have been nearing the end of the trail, but this totally revamped Byrds lineup had plenty of firepower left in their mighty arsenal. Byrds founding member/vocalist/12-string legend Roger McGuinn—along with guitar whiz Clarence White, bassist Skip Battin and drummer Gene Parsons—sound better than ever sailing through muscular renditions of new Byrds fave (and Dr. John tribute) “Lover Of The Bayou” and Dylan country-rock staple “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.” McGuinn admits he kept the name of the legendary Los Angeles combo intact for the sake of his old pal (and new fretboard foil). “Clarence White always wanted to be in the Byrds ... and now he had his chance.” says McGuinn.

12" Vinyl LP Single -- Sealed

"Machine Gun" is the first single to be lifted off Portishead's long awaited upcoming album Third and it's an absolute stunner. The track is built from heavy stabs and a compressed, distorted drum machine and is magnificantly supported here by Beth Gibbon's ghostly vocals. "Machine Gun" really is unbelievably good and this must have 12" single is packaged in a clear plastic sleeve with an etched art B-side.

The Best Songs From Green River
Creedence Clearwater Revival
$20.99
45 RPM Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
By the summer of 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival was firmly ensconced as the American dance band, continuing to churn out hugely-successful hit singles, four of which are on this album, and cut here at 45 RPM. The title cut "Green River," along with "Commotion," "Bad Moon Rising" and "Lodi," were Top Ten singles in the classic rockabilly/R&B tradition and together made this LP the group’s first No. 1 album on the Billboard charts. Because of a penchant for developing tight, carefully crafted material before entering the studio, CCR recorded Green River in an astounding two-and-a-half days, after which the LP remained on the charts for 88 weeks, earning the group its second platinum LP.

180 Gram 45 RPM Vinyl LP - Sealed

After four years of nearly nonstop performing, CCR sounds as polished and tight as ever on this album. Of the two hit singles from the LP, "Hey Tonight" and "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?," the latter’s slower ballad format clearly suggests the band was exploring new areas of its music, including a developing emphasis on instrumentals. With this swing of the pendulum, the creative tasks would in the future be shared by all members of the group.

Everest is a group of Los Angeles music community alumni and friends who decided to create music together. The result is the album Ghost Notes, a release of Vapor Records. Everest was formed by Russell Pollard (vocals, guitar, drums), J. Soda (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Rob Douglas (bass, vocals) and Joel Graves (guitar, keyboards, vocals), with the help of friend and drummer Davey Latter. Kevin Bronson of the Los Angeles Times observed that the band members “sport resumes longer than the intro to ‘Cortez The Killer’ and it's true, these guys have spent time in bands such as Sebadoh, the Folk Implosion, Earlimart, Mike Stinson, Slydell, John Vanderslice, and the Watson Twins. Four Tet
$15.99
Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed

The Ringer mini album is a 32 minute, four-track excursion into the kind of wide-open spaces you might find if you set out to make techno with an afrobeat/ krautrock sensibility. Ringer locks together gloriously rich synthesizer arpeggios; “Wing Body Wing” slips from crisp clusters of disco percussion to Steve Reich polyrhythms; and in between are another two euphoric ripples of sound, “Ribbons” and “Swimmer.” The techno heartbeat comes from Kieran Hebden’s regular DJ residences over the last couple of years as well as his ongoing collaborations with legendary jazz drummer Steve Reid. Whether in the studio or live, Kieran and Steve often click into the kind of deep 4/4 grooves that can depart in any direction with a little adjustment. Ringer carries that minimal pulse over into Four Tet, and while Kieran’s trademark recuttings of jazz breaks may be less in evidence, his feel for harmony and melody is, as always, unmistakable.

 Supreme Balloon
Matmos
$22.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
The new album from Matmos finds them taking a holiday from conceptual responsibility, skipping the outré sampling antics in favor of a lighthearted "cosmic pop" record made entirely out of synthesizers. Leave it to Matmos to invent a hard and fast rule that they have to follow even when they're just having fun: the creative restriction this time around is that Supreme Balloon is an ALL synthesizer album and no microphones were used at any point. Gear fetishists take note: the exotic and antiquated synths used on the record heavily spotlight the classic 60s/70s/80s consumer electronic rigs of Arp, Korg, Roland, Waldorf and Moog. But there are also one-of-a-kind curios present, such as the "Coupigny" modular synthesizer housed in the INA/GRM studios at Radio France in Paris and used extensively by some of the titans of musique-concrete. Double LP in heavy-duty Stoughton gatefold, pressed in HQ-180 gram vinyl at RTI plus MP3 coupon. Vinyl includes 4 extra tracks, including a collaboration with Terry Riley.

 Sun Down
Nik Freitas
$15.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
Nik Freitas' Team Love debut, Sun Down, equal parts wry, warm and sonorous, is the end product of several years of life’s ups and downs. Freitas writes, plays, engineers and produces every note on his records. Not that he's got a lot of expensive gear. A visit to his Poppy Peak studio/shed reveals that Nik is working low-budget minor miracles, the kind of miracles one receives via hundreds of hours on Craigslist. One listen to Sun Down and you know you're hearing a certain hard-won grace. The record takes you from Paul Simon's Graceland to David Bowie's Hunky Dory all in the span of forty effortless minutes. Sun Down is endowed with a sort of gravity and self-possession; no reaching, no going for the gold, just perfect, four minute thesis statements. It all began several years ago for Freitas, when a co-worker sold him an antique piano that was "used by a street musician before the dawn of Casio." Nik taught himself how to play the thing, and it became the cornerstone of three earlier records, Here's Laughing at You, Heavy Mellow and Voicing the Hammers. Other people began to take notice. He's opened for Jason Lytle of Granddaddy, played guitar for Jim Fairchild of All Smiles and recorded with Miles Kurosky of Beulah. Lately, he's been opening shows for Bright Eyes which led him to his current resting place at Team Love. The end of the imaginary side one features "Sophie" with live horns punctuating the tale of a girl who seems to have made some rather unfortunate choices. It's a perfect signpost of a song, and it clears the decks for what's to come in the second half, where Nik's orchestra of one builds the final five songs into an Abbey Road type suite that fans of Jon Brion will hearken to. Sun Down is imbued with a sort of indie grandeur that is both unexpected and totally natural.

 Nouns
No Age
$13.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
The Los Angeles duo consisting of drummer/vocalist Dean Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall is many things at once even as it embraces its minimalism. No Age issued a slew of singles on a variety of indie labels in 2007, resulting in the tellingly cohesive compendium, Weirdo Rippers on Fat Cat Records later that year. That widely heralded release inspired such mainstream press as The New Yorker and the L.A. Times to feature the band’s ties to the underground scene surrounding the Los Angeles all-ages club The Smell. Recorded by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Los Angeles from October to December of 2007, Nouns, the band's Sub Pop debut, is succinctly all-encompassing, from the faux-simplicity of the title to the beautiful distortion of its sound, to the packaging that includes a 68-page full-color book packed with photos and art pieces. The record opens with a symphony of noise (both Dean and Randy use samples alongside their main instruments) and sometimes creeps, sometimes smashes through a sonic headlock befitting Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth, Kiwi pop, My Bloody Valentine, and experimental noise. "No Age is a band,” says Dean. "Bands should be fun and exciting and they should push all the buttons at the same time. They should make you feel like you are going to explode and make you utterly confused and inspired at the same time.” And sometimes they do.

 Miles Of Styles
Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra
$19.99
Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed
|
The seventh release in the Ping Pong Orchestra album series see’s multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee go global. This is the soundtrack to places Lee has been, would like to visit and it was made using instruments he’s picked-up along the way. Miles of Styles is inspired by the multi-cultural mix of people in his hometown of London, the awe inspiring metropolis that is New York City and by the mysterious uber-stylish vibe of Tokyo. Not to mention Jamaica, Finland, Greece, China, France and beyond.
Lee’s sound, which started as a take on old-school library albums and has grown into a sound of his own, is made possible by his inability to stop making music in an insanely overpopulated studio. “I've always collected traditional folk instruments from around the world. I love taking them out of their traditional element and putting them into a different context. Mixing and creating interesting doubles such as steel drum with Balafone or Sitar with Banjo,” explains Lee, “I love when sounds become mysterious and are hard to decipher."

The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll
Simon Joyner
$15.99
Vinyl LP - Sealed

Team Love honorably releases the reissue of the long out-of-print seminal LP, The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll by the Omaha, Nebraska native and singer/songwriter Simon Joyner. The vinyl-only classic was originally released in 1994 on Sing, Eunuchs! and it marked the first major critical mile-stone in Joyners lauded career. John Peel famously played it in its entirety on his BBC radio program upon its release and Joyner's underground cult status was solidified. This event became know as “The Peel Incident” in Europe because in all of John Peel’s years in radio he had only played a record in its entirety one other time.

 Color Voice
Sinkane
$15.99
Limited Edition Picture Vinyl LP - Sealed
|
The son of a freedom fighter journalist/politician, Ahmed Gallab and his family fled to the United States from the Sudan when he was only six years old, due to current President Omar El Bashir's successful coup of the former democratic government. Ahmed learned the ropes by playing drums in smelly basements with hardcore bands; wear and tear tours that have included having to converse with neo-Nazis, walking through desolate streets and a near death experience. His debut solo record under the moniker Sinkane, aptly entitled Color Voice is a hypnotic affair that ebbs and flows shoegaze, jazz and psychedelic themes; an ethereal soundscape full of delay and drones contrasted by cascading dueling drum kits. Multi-instrumentalist Ahmed Gallab composes, arranges and plays virtually all the instruments on Color Voice which is divided into four movements. Limited Edition, hand numbered pressing of 500 picture discs.

The Last Shadow Puppets are Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (The Rascals). Firm friends ever since the Arctic Monkeys toured with Kane’s previous group, The Little Flames, the pair were so inspired by listening to the likes of Scott Walker, early Bowie and David Axelrod, that they hatched a plan. The result, The Age of the Understatement, is an album of 12 full-blooded songs, bold and brassy, full of drama, wit and melody, that source the past but avoid falling into pa | | | |
