The second in a trilogy of Columbus, Ohio soul albums to be issued on Numero’s Asterisk imprint comes from the pen and mind of Norman Whiteside. His lone album, under the pseudonym Wee, is firmly ensconced in Innervisions-era Stevie Wonder, with nary a trace of his work as a writer for Bill Moss’ Capsoul label a few years prior. Smooth, sexy, and synthy, You Can Fly On My Aeroplane is a peerless sprawling psychedelic soul concept album. The original nine song LP has been expanded to nineteen, including seven previously unreleased tracks!

Robin Thicke is primed and ready on his appropriately titled new album, Something Else. "It was like everyone was saying the same things, worried about the same things and I just felt we needed something different right now." After his highly acclaimed 1.5 million selling album The Evolution of Robin Thicke which garnered the #1 smash hit "Lost Without U," constant touring and appearances, Robin needed to sit back, reflect on the last few years and start anew. The result is Something Else.

By 1967, East St. Louis, Illinois, once dubbed an All-American city by the U.S. Chamber Of Comerce, had become St Louis, Missouri's evil twin. Unemployment, drug addiction and vicious gang activity put a dark and heavy lid on a bi-state area that once birthed world-changing talent the likes of Chuck Berry, Josephine Baker and Miles Davis. But both cities still spawned their heroes, and Allan Merry was one of them. Something of a legend for his work with Ray Charles, Merry channeled his talent into teaching, forming the Young Disciples through the South End Community Center to keep the kids off the streets and out of the gangs. With nearly eighty local youths involved, from both sides of the Mississippi, the Young Disciples encompassed solo acts, duos, male and female vocal groups, a massive horn section, and a troupe of African dancers. Every sweat-drenched recording included here emerged from this grass-roots organization that changed, if not saved, lives. Former East St Louis Mayor Carl Officer had a slogan he liked to pitch: "There's A City Under Here." Here's the musical proof of that possibility. Deluxe 2LP set comes housed in a brick-thick gatefold sleeve with 21 re-mastered tracks and a pull out YoDi brochure.

Lyrics Born (a.k.a. Tom Shimura) has long been known for his innovative beats, creative collaborations and soulful vocals. Here he takes a giant leap forward in song craft, incorporating elements such as pop, reggaeton and R&B. It's the rare MC who can bridge the gap between hip-hop and alternative rock, owning the crowd at Bonnaroo and Bumbershoot as easily as he trades rhymes with Charlie 2na.
With beats courtesy of Jake One, Amp Live, Trackademics and Lyrics Born himself, Everywhere At Once dabbles in everything from old-school rap, electro, 1970s soul, and G-Funk to contemporary R&B, pop, and jazz. By refusing to assign himself to any specific style within the hip-hop genre, Lyrics Born is able to transcend it. The end result is a well-rounded effort that succeeds in its many endeavors, appealing to all kinds of music fans while never sounding derivative. Honest, introspective and eclectic, Everywhere At Once is among the best hip-hop albums of 2008.

Diana Ross Diana Ross $34.99

Diana Ross' 1970 self-titled release was her debut as a solo artist and it served as the ultimate test as to see if the former Supremes frontwoman could hold her own without the talents of her former group. With the help of the songwriting-production team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the exception being the song "These Things Will Keep Me Loving You" which was produced by Johnny Bristol, her eponymous release became a great success and arguably the best full-length album Ross ever released. Highlighted by Ross' legendary cover of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" which peaked at number one and garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Upon ABC's original 1970 release, The Jackson brothers were regarded as more of a singles act. ABC drastically changed that, and in addition to the radio classics "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I Found That Girl," the quintet produces fine versions of other Motown stars' hits and a tough version of Funkadelic's funny psychedelic-soul nugget "I'll Bet You." The preteen Michael emotes more than credibly on the likes of Stevie Wonder's "Don't Know Why I Love You" and Smokey's "(Come 'Round Here) I'm the One You Need."

Cloud Nine The Temptations $34.99

PRE-ORDER
A masterpiece in psychedelic soul from The Temptations and perhaps the most perfectly realized album from their years working with Norman Whitfield! The set's awash in that bottom-heavy, rumbling funk mode that Whitfield brought to the group at the end of the 60s, served up in bold tracks that push the group's vocals to a whole new level, and which bring in a more righteous sound than anyone might have expected previously from Motown! The centerpiece here is the amazing "Runaway Child," a really extended number that has all the political soul of a Curtis Mayfield tune. Other titles include "Cloud Nine," "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me," "Love Is A Hurtin Thing," "I Gotta Find A Way," "I Need Your Lovin" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."

In The Jungle Groove James Brown $19.99
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
In the Jungle Groove was the first James Brown reissue to provide full-length and unedited versions of his classic funk vamps of the late-'60s and early '70s. The original nine-track set featured the hippest sampled hits and extended DJ b-boy grooves, especially “Funky Drummer,” the most widely heard JB snippet in hip-hop and pop. Super-funky and hard-edged, In the Jungle Groove also included the unreleased “I Got To Move.” This new, remastered edition recreates the original album lineup with a key bonus track: a freshly mixed, extended version of “Blind Man Can See It,” another heavily-sampled track from the early ’70s that first appeared only as a two-minute LP track.

Janet Jackson describes her new album Discipline this way; "It's the idea that unifies the songs on this record. As a concept, and even a lifestyle, discipline goes extremely deep. It can be applied to so much about ourselves. In my case, I see it as one of defining aspects of my character. Discipline was there for me from the start. But it was not until this record that I began to understand its full meaning. In putting Discipline out front as both the title of the album and title of a song about sexual surrender I wanted to announce that I was venturing into new creative waters. That meant working with producers like Jermaine Dupri, Rodney Jerkins and Ne-Yo, whose songs spoke to the immediacy of my emotions. Like all my records, this one, whether intentional or not, has autobiographical roots. It's difficult for me to work any other way. I don't feel it, if I don't believe it, I can't sing it. So Discipline, as a storyline, begins in my childhood which someone could see as a classic study in discipline. Discipline was part of a family culture that I absorbed. I was born with it. I also believe that discipline has given me the confidence to jump out of the nest. When L.A. Reid, Chairman of Island Def Jam, and I discussed co-executive producing this record, we both agreed that the feeling had to adventuresome and fresh. I was interested in exploring musical scenarios, some exotic, many erotic, but all deeply emotional. I wanted to push the envelope. And I'm glad that Discipline, both as a song and an album, does just that."

Two LP set of Nigeria Rock Special shines a light on the flipside of the sounds of Psychedelic Afro-Rock & Fuzz Funk coming out of Nigeria in the 1970s. Kids all over the world were picking up guitars. Spurred on by Cream drummer Ginger Baker's visits to Lagos and his band Airforce (featuring many Nigerian musicians), the rock reverberated around the universities and the craze that followed hit the youth population of Nigeria hard -- mixing fuzz guitar and heavy African rhythms with elements of Led Zeppelin, Traffic and The Chambers Bros. Here are 15 of the best for the 1st time in 30 years and include Ofege, The Action 13, The Hygrades, The Wings, Mono Mono, Tabukah "X", The Funkees, Joe King Kologbo & His Black Sound, Tunji Oyelana and more.

"I’ll Take You There" (Side 1)
A beautiful and now instantly-recognizable call-and-response chorus that scored a smash Number One hit on the Billboard charts of 1972. The backing instrumentation is simple with almost no changes. Atop that rock-solid foundation, we’re taken "there" with, "I know a place/Ain't nobody crying/Ain't nobody worried/Ain't no smiling faces/Lying to the races/Help me (backing vocals: "I'll take you there)."
"Respect Yourself" (Side 2)
The Staple Singers' 1972 hit that rose to Number Two on the Billboard charts, and, along with "I'll Take You There," affirmed this Chicago group as stars of the soul and pop worlds. The song begins with a blues-tinged electric piano introduction and then builds to a crescendo full of inspiration. Pops Staples begins the lyrics with, "If you disrespect anyone that you're running to/How in the world do you think anybody's supposed to respect you/If you don't give a heck about the man with the Bible in his hand/Just get out the way and let the gentleman do his thing." Pops' daughter Mavis, an absolute vocal giant, then takes over the vocals with, "If you're walking 'round thinking that the world owes you something 'cause you're here/You're going out the world backwards like you did when you first come here/You curse around women but you don't even know their name/Then you’re dumb enough to think it'll make you a big ol' man."
Analogue Productions introduced test pressings from their Stax Records reissue at the June 2003 Home Entertainment Expo in San Francisco. Among the exhibitors to show off their wares using these yet-to-be-released 45s was Richard Vandersteen of Vandersteen Audio.
"It was a big hit. The visitors packed the room every time we put it on. For once at one of these shows, there was some music that people wanted to hear. I mean, famous, classic music sounding incredible. It's just great old music that sounds much better than it ever had before. The people just loved it, and we loved playing it." - Richard Vandersteen, Vandersteen Audio

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs Sealed + 7"
Originally released in 1976, the prolific Songs in the Key of Life is a milestone in the career of Stevie Wonder and the last of five consecutive albums widely hailed as his 'classic period'. From his sharp commentaries on American social history and pro-peace supplications to some of his most intimate professions of love, Songs In The Key of Life casted Wonder's music further beyond R&B, funk and disco than ever before. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, the highly ambitious and experimental double LP became the best-selling and most critically acclaimed albums of his career and it went on to win Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal and Album of the Year. Limited edition vinyl LP pressing of the uber-successful album from this UK vocalist. 'Back To Black' is the second album from London-based chanteuse Amy Winehouse. Although her 2003 debut was a success, her rowdy offstage behavior became the focus of tabloids and critics instead of the music. Because of this, Winehouse stepped out of the spotlight and concentrated on putting the focus back on her music. Three years later, her sophomore release has surprised critics and excited her fanbase. Combining a strong, Jazzy vocal style with often frank lyrical content recounting tales of love and loss, Winehouse is a truly talented songwriter with a good ear for melody, making this album an essential purchase. Includes the single 'Rehab'. Island.

The Black Chord is a landmark depiction of the cultural cross-fertilization that is the foundation of today's pop. Following a circular path, music has traveled from its roots and extended its branches into popular music only to return and recreate itself: Senegalese rhythms survived slavery and flourished in New Orleans to become jazz and rhythm & blues which informed Jamaican reggae, which influenced New York hip-hop, which in turn--completing the circle--inspired young rap artists in Senegal. This is a centuries-long saga that continues to energize musicians in every genre.
This new book reveals the work of nine key singer-songwriters of the 1960s: David Ackles; David Blue; Tim Buckley; Tim Hardin; Fred Neil; Phil Ochs; Tom Rapp; Tim Rose; and Tom Rush. Here are individual tales of creativity and class songs including If I Were A Carpenter, Everybody's Talkin', Song To The Sire, Hey Joe, and No Regrets. The book shows how these nine talented artists each expanded the standard pop blueprint of the day and made a significant contribution to rock music's coming of age. A 32-page colour section features rare and revealing photographs, and a fully annotated and illustrated discography details the recorded output of the nine.
Stereophile magazine senior contributing editor and analog expert Michael Fremer presents his almost three hour long Practical Guide to Turntable Set-Up. Fremer sets up three popular turntables from Pro-Ject, Rega and VPI. Using the hands-on phono cartridge installation techniques, tips and basic principles demonstrated with close-ups and flash animation, any turntable from the popular Technics SL-1200 to the most esoteric can be set up to perfection. Also included: an interview with famed Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino, and a 20 page PDF file embedded in the disc's DVD-ROM section that includes even more detailed technical descriptions and an article on record cleaning no vinyl fan should be without. Despite the seemingly dry subject matter, the disc is entertaining. There are even some laughs as Fremer once did stand up comedy (he played legendary Max's Kansas City and even opened for bands like Television and The Jam).
