Groovin' With Jug Richard "Groove" Holmes $34.99

Ironically, Gene "Jug" Ammons tended to be critical of organists; he was quoted as saying that "organ players don't know any changes." However, as critical as the Chicago tenor saxman might have been of organists, he did some of his best work in their presence. When you united Ammons with Jack McDuff, Johnny "Hammond" Smith and other B-3 masters in the '60s, the sparks would fly. They certainly fly on this excellent album, which finds Gene Ammons and Richard "Groove" Holmes co-leading a soul-jazz/hard bop organ combo that also includes guitarist Gene Edwards and drummer Leroy Henderson. The quartet is heard in two settings on August 15, 1961; three of the eight selections were produced by Richard Bock in a Los Angeles studio in the afternoon, while the other five were recorded several hours later at an L.A. club called the Black Orchid. Ammons and Holmes prove to be a strong combination in both settings, although their playing is somewhat looser at the Orchid, where the delights include some slow blues (Ammons' "Hittin' the Jug"), a smoky ballad ("Willow Weep for Me") and a lightning-fast barnburner (Ammons' "Juggin' Around").

The '70s was a vibrant musical period universally and the scene in Nigeria was no exception. Bands sprang up all over the country, free to fuse their traditional music with genres such as soul, funk and pop. In the midst of this creative turmoil, an effervescent style innovator called Fred Fisher, famed trombonist, vocalist, composer, songwriter, hit the world with his high energy dance grooves and catchy melodies.
This fabulous compilation, African Carnival, collects the best songs from Fred Fisher's albums: Say The Truth (1979), No Way (1981), Wahala Dey For Town (1988) and Ogiza (1990), complete with liner notes by Nigerian specialist Samuel Kayode.

Like many gospel and R&B singers, Naomi Davis Shelton learned to sing at an early age in the church where she was baptized in Alabama. She began her professional career with a gig as the house singer at a little club called the Night Cap in Brooklyn, NY. It was there where she would meet the man who would become her producer, mentor, and friend for life.
Cliff Driver and his band were just off the road backing Baby Washington as part of the James Brown Revue, and had taken a job as the house band at the Night Cap. It would be a number of years before they would meet up again, but Cliff took an instant liking to Naomi's voice. "I liked her cause she had a different type voice, a raspy sound like Mavis Staples."
In 1999, Cliff and Naomi were doing a club set with legendary James Brown bassist Fred Thomas at Flannery's in Manhattan, when then Desco Records label man Gabriel Roth approached them about doing a recording. Naomi and Cliff cut "41st Street Breakdown." The record made some noise on the then budding deep funk scene, getting heavy rotation at overseas funk parties.
Over the next few years, Roth formed and developed Daptone Records with partner and saxophonist Neal Sugarman. It took three sets of sessions over three years before Roth and Driver finally found the right combination of singers, songs, and musicians to cut Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens' full length. The final result, What Have You Done, My Brother?, is a testament to the singular sound of gospel and soul music.

Victor Olaiya is certainly one of the legendary foundation stones of modern Nigerian music, yet he has never received much acknowledgment or really had his albums released or promoted in any quantity outside of Nigeria. So this Vampisoul release is a step in the right direction for the 77 year old who was probably Nigeria’s leading star of the 50's and early 60's. Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya, the evil genius of Highlife, is still sockin’ it to them after 60 years on stage. If you’re lucky you can catch him blowing that trumpet and singing his heart out at his own celebrated Stadium Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.
This album from 1970 is from Olaiya’s Highlife/Funk phase, but its worth taking a trawl through his back pages to see how he became the Evil Genius, before you roll back the rug and get down with the Highlife-Funk.

This Triple LP volume accounts for Fela Kuti's career between 1963 and 1969, drawing a line before we get to his Africa 70 days. Consequently, the compilation might be viewed as taking a less politicized approach to Kuti's career and deliberately sidestepping the music that coincided with his activism against the Nigerian military dictatorship during the '70s. The benefit of this is that it gives an insight into Kuti's purely musical innovations, this is afterall the musician behind what we now term as Afrobeat, and it was during this period in the '60s that his signature musical style developed from its roots in highlife, jazz and soul.

Between 1967 and 1981 Detroit’s downriver neighbor Ecorse, Michigan had its very own Harry Smith. Set up in a basement on 18th Avenue, Felton Williams chronicled the musical lives of Ecorse’s citizens and issued them on the Solid Rock, Compose, and Revival labels. Compiled here are 24 of Williams’ most fascinating recordings, covering gospel, group soul, garage-punk, northern, jazz, and funk.
Also included is a DVD with over 200 sound recordings pulled from his archives and compiled into a digital tape vault. This allows you to dig deep into the endless hours of jam sessions, demos, sermons, rehearsals and studio outtakes. The DVD also has an engaging 30 minute documentary on the making of Downriver Revival and gives you further insight into Felton and the artists he recorded at Double-U-Sound.

The mid-sixties were the era of the girl group: the Supremes, the Ronettes, the Marvelettes, the Shirelles, the Shangri-Las…the girls ruled the charts like never before, but while the Supremes, dressed in shimmering evening gowns, breathlessly wooed listeners to the tune of “Baby Love”, the Shangri-Las stormed stages across the USA in tight pants and leather biker boots, singing about motorcycles and runaways. They were the voice of teens living on the margins of society…the original bad girls, and according to legend, they lived up to their status off stage as well as on. Rumours of the Shangs potty mouths, extreme pranks, drinking, drug use and gun toting, not surprisingly, soon ruffled the feathers of finger-wagging moralists on both sides of the Atlantic (who, as usual, tried to end all the fun by calling them “depraved” and getting them banned), but most teens, present and future, could not get enough! In fact, punk rockers for decades to come would cite them as a major source of inspiration.
But it was not only their bad girl image that turned these four teenagers from the wrong side of town (Cambria Heights, Queens) into major pop icons overnight, their lyrics and lyrical delivery were a work of pure genius. Their songs, produced by the legendary Shadow Morton (who, a decade later, was producing the New York Dolls), were melodramatic teen epics of love lost, social alienation, and death, a bit heavy for the pop charts, perhaps, but for two short years, from 1964 to 1966, they were the “Sophisticated Boom Boom” on your dial. Lines like, “When I say I’m in Love, you best believe I’m in love L-U-V!” and “He’s good bad, but he’s not evil” are now remembered as classic moments in pop history, and the Shangri-Las as one of the greatest girl groups of all time. This extensive retrospective brings back the essential work of these proto-riot grrrls, including all their superb hits: tunes like, “Leader Of The Pack,” “Give Him A Great Big Kiss,” “Right Now And Not Later,” “Out In The Streets” and more!

Premiér™ Vinyl Record Cleaner is a mild precision cleaner formulated to clean, preserve and protect precious audio recordings. New DuPont solvent technology -- just invented in 2000 --enables Premiér™ to easily out-perform any other old-style LP cleaning system on the market today. In fact, it’s as good or even better than the old Freon® solvent cleaners which everybody used thirty years ago.
The solvent at the heart of this extraordinary cleaner has three characteristics which make it the best vinyl cleaner on the market today.
First, the solvent has a very low surface tension and very low viscosity. This means that Premiér™ is much, much 'wetter' than water. Unlike water, Premiér™ won’t bead-up on the waxy surface of an LP but instead it will spread out, flowing into the grooves and dissolving light oils and fingerprints. (We know you never touch the surface of your LPs, but there’s just no telling some folks.)
Secondly, Premiér™ is very heavy -- nearly twice as heavy as water, and much heavier than dust or the little bits of mold release compounds left on the LP by the stamping machine. This enables Premiér™ to get under the contamination on the record and displace it -- it literally 'floats' the contamination away, just like a ship floats in the ocean.
But it gets even better. One little-known fact about LPs is that they accumulate static, just like that cheap shag carpeting your parents put in the family room when you were a kid. Remember the jolt of electricity you got when you walked across the room and touched a doorknob? Well, the same thing happens to LPs as you slide them in and out of their sleeves or even just walk across a room with one in your hand (although obviously at much lower voltages). At the microscopic scale of a record groove and a dust particle, that tiny voltage acts like a powerful magnet and locks the dust particles onto the surface of the record. But Premiér™ features a special additive which breaks those 'static' bonds, freeing the dust to float off the LP. This unleashes the 'like new' sound that’s trapped in your LPs -- getting rid of the static means you get rid of the dust, along with the snaps and pops and cracks which drive you nuts.
Does it work? You bet. A skeptical Tom Lyle wrote in The $ensible Sound that "The results are impressive… I was amazed how silent the vinyl was." More recently, in Stereophile Michael Fremer wrote "Most importantly, after that first play the stylus remained clean, with no residue or dirt stuck to it.' No dust, no noise, just pure sound"
Here’s a couple of other useful features about Premiér™:
* Premiér™ dries briskly, so it can be used in conjunction with other LP cleaning systems.
* Premiér™ can clean LPs, CDs and DVDs, plus all the recording heads, motors, relays, dials, connectors and cables found on modern stereo systems. It also is safe for keyboards, test gear and even the screens on laptop computers and PDAs.
* Premiér™ is nonflammable so it’s safe to have around the house.
* Premiér™ has almost no aroma so it’s inconspicuous to use.
* Premiér™ is completely ozone-safe, is generally non-toxic and is considered very safe for people and the planet. Although we know people who use Premiér™ on operating electronics, it is neither approved nor recommended by Micro Care for that use.
