The seventh volume of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series doubles as the soundtrack to No Direction Home, Martin Scorseses's feature-length documentary covering Dylan's career from its beginnings to 1966 (it was aired in two parts on PBS in September 2005 and released in expanded form on DVD that same month). Unlike the previous three installments of The Bootleg Series, which focused exclusively on live concerts, No Direction Home is assembled from a variety of sources, including home recordings, publishing demos, alternate studio takes, and live recordings, with the first disc devoted to early acoustic recordings and the second to electric music. In fact, No Direction Home proceeds chronologically, filling in gaps between the proper albums or, more often, providing a parallel history of the most productive era of Dylan's career. All of this material -- with the exception of "Song to Woody," taken from his debut, and a cataclysmic version of "Like a Rolling Stone" taken from the Royal Albert Hall show that was released as Bob Dylan Live '66 -- is previously unreleased, and much of it has not been widely bootlegged (and the cuts that have been bootlegged, such as "Dink's Song," have never been heard in such crystal-clear fidelity). Where the inaugural edition of The Bootleg Series had many previously unreleased Dylan originals, there is only one here, the tentative opener, "When I Got Troubles," a sweet, simple 1959 song that finds Dylanin his formative stage. In place of unheard songs are a slew of alternate versions of familiar tunes. On the first two LP's, these are largely live versions of such warhorses as "Blowin' in the Wind," "Masters of War," and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall," recorded when the songs were still fresh. These live performances have an immediacy and intimacy that not only illustrate what a powerful folksinger Dylan was, but also suggest how the songs might have sounded when they were new tunes. Toward the end of the second LP, alternate versions that are significantly different from the final versions begin to surface with an early take on "Mr. Tambourine Man" recorded at the Another Side of Bob Dylan sessions with Ramblin' Jack Elliott on second guitar and backing vocals. The third and fourth LP's contain several alternates that are similarly notably different, highlighted by a lively, careening "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" with a different final verse, a "Desolation Row" with electric guitar, "Highway 61 Revisited" without the siren whistle, a slower, heavier, blusier take on "Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat," a relaxed version of "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" that lacks the carnivalesque swirl of sound from the Blonde on Blonde version, and a lean, insistent "Visions of Johanna."
Everything here is uniformly excellent and worth hearing well more than once. That alone, of course, would make this yet another worthwhile addition to any serious Dylan collection, but what makes No Direction Home noteworthy as an album is that it is the first Dylan record to offer an aural biography of Dylan. This does a superb job of tracing the development of Dylan as a musician, taking him from a young folkie singing standards, through the rush of his early standards, and to the visionary music he made once he went electric. Put in this context, the electric music on the third and fourth LP's sounds as bracing and brilliant and surprising as it did in the '60s, while the acoustic folk on LP's one and two sounds vibrant, pure, and alive. After all these years, that's a hard accomplishment to pull off, and to the credit of everybody involved in this terrific release, they've been able to make even the most familiar Dylan tunes feel new again.
As usual, this deluxe edition comes from the original mix down masters and was transferred by Bernie Grundman to lacquer on on Classic's "all tube" analog cutting system. This deluxe 4-LP set includes two alternate cover art gatefold jackets (Blonde on Blonde and Bringing it all Back Home), a 60+ page 12" x12" booklet all housed in an a special outer box. Birdy Peter Gabriel $32.99
200 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed
Peter Gabriel's first foray into soundtracks was for Alan Parker's
contemplative film Birdy and is a successful companion piece, providing a
backdrop that is moody and evocative. Nearly half of the album's dozen
tracks incorporate threads from material found on Gabriel's 1982 Security
set, including "Close Up," which makes use of keyboard passages from "Family
Snapshot," and "The Heat," which is a reworking of "The Rhythm of the Heat"
and builds to a frenzied percussive crescendo. Material specially written
for this project includes the murky opening track, "At Night," the tribal
"Floating Dogs," and "Slow Marimbas," a track which would become part of
future live performances. The fact that Birdy is comprised of all
instrumentals and its meditative nature makes it fine, reflective listening
for the more adventurous. The transfer was from the original two track 1/2"
analog master tapes provided by Peter Gabriel's Real World for cutting the
master lacquers. The detail, clarity and bottom octave weight are superb!

Stereophile magazine senior contributing editor and analog expert Michael Fremer presents his almost three hour long Practical Guide to Turntable Set-Up. Fremer sets up three popular turntables from Pro-Ject, Rega and VPI. Using the hands-on phono cartridge installation techniques, tips and basic principles demonstrated with close-ups and flash animation, any turntable from the popular Technics SL-1200 to the most esoteric can be set up to perfection. Also included: an interview with famed Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino, and a 20 page PDF file embedded in the disc's DVD-ROM section that includes even more detailed technical descriptions and an article on record cleaning no vinyl fan should be without. Despite the seemingly dry subject matter, the disc is entertaining. There are even some laughs as Fremer once did stand up comedy (he played legendary Max's Kansas City and even opened for bands like Television and The Jam).

Without a doubt, soundtracks have been the field of experimention for innovative musicians around the world; France is no exception, but definitly has its own unique certain sound to offer: somewhere between French-Pop and Blaxploitation-reminiscences. On this compilation of French Soundtracks from mainly the '60s and '70s (only exception: "Grand théme Malko" from 1982), we cover the whole spectrum; from pulsating thriller-beats to relaxed sexy grooves. The line-up of first class composers reads as follows: Jean Yanne, Francis Lai, Georges Garvarentz, Michel Magne, Claude Bolling and many more pump the "French touch" out of your speakers! Mysterious, sexy, or just plain funky (thank god for various disco scenes) are the tracks featured on this compilation. Percussive rhythms, wild organs, psychedelic flutes, sitars and various electronic sounds will do the rest to spoil the advanced listener. The result is this explosive cocktail of casual grooves and orchestral thriller-themes!

The directorial debut of Drew Barrymore stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Pollock) plays Bliss’ disapproving mother, while Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) and Juliette Lewis (Old School) play roller-derby stars. Also starring Eve, Jimmy Fallon, and Daniel Stern.
The girl-power-meets-punk-rock spirit of the music featured in Whip It! plays an integral role in telling the story, from setting the film's rebellious tone to celebrating the characters' wild individuality. The soundtrack's 19 songs reflect the film's outsider ethos with music from underground artists, including Belgian electro-rockers Goose ("Black Gloves"), Mercury Prize nominees The Go! Team ("Doing It Right"), L.A. beat-punks The Ettes ("Crown Of Age"), Rolling Stone Artist To Watch Apollo Sunshine ("Breeze"), Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman, and Nebraska indie-pop quintet Tilly and the Wall ("Pot Kettle Black").
Among the collection's well-known artists are The Ramones ("Sheena Is A Punk Rocker"), The Breeders ("Bang On"), Dolly Parton ("Jolene"), The Raveonettes ("Dead Sound"), and .38 Special ("Caught Up In You"). Best known for his immortal work with Frank Sinatra, Nelson Riddle was also a much sough-after film composer. His 1962 original score for Stanley Kubrick's 'Lolita' is among his best film work. It contains "Lolita Ya YA" a maddeningly vapid and catchy instrumental with nonsense vocals that comes across as a simultaneously vicious and good-humored parody of the kitschiest elements of early '60s rock 'n roll.
Most recently heard with the score to The Day The Earth Stood Still, award winning film composer Tyler Bates offers a powerful, orchestral Original Motion Picture Score for his next blockbuster Watchmen. Having scored two earlier films from Watchmen’s Zack Snyder (300 and Dawn Of The Dead) as well as Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween, Bates is rapidly gaining notice as the favorite composer of a new generation of directors. One of the most anticipated movies of 2009, Watchman is an adaptation of the landmark Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons graphic novel series set in an alternative 1985 in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society and the world is on the brink of nuclear war.

Inside Karen O is a Wild Thing, as singer for the Grammy-nominated Yeah Yeah Yeahs, her wild thing is in your face, vulnerable, obnoxious, tender, exciting... a self-proclaimed "spazoid." To Oscar-nominated Where the Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze, however, Karen O and her music possess something of a child-like innocence, a guileless charm that put her exactly on the right emotional wavelength to sonically capture the film, be it a tender moment or a wild rumpus.
To compose the music, O enlisted friends and fellow musicians she believed had a musical intuition that would bolster her intent to marry sound to vision. Dubbed Karen O and the Kids, these include Tristan Bechet (Services), Tom Biller (co-producer with Karen O and member of Afternoons), Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee), Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), Oscar Michel (Gris Gris), Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska), Nick Zinner, (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and an untrained children's choir.
"I didn't want to make music that was hammering you over the head or go for some kind of pushbutton emotion," O says. "What I initially wanted to do was close to Cat Stevens in Harold & Maude, really simple, but memorably and seamlessly woven into the movie.
"Working with all these highly-empathetic musicians over of a couple of years on this soundtrack was a lesson in the power of collaboration," says O.
Together, Karen O and the Kids created songs that are at times gargantuan and at others stripped-down and bittersweet. Jonze pushed O to pour as much heart and soul as she could muster into the songs, reminding her that the music would play a heavy role in the film. That's saying a lot, considering it's based on the Maurice Sendak classic, one of the most beloved books of all time, with a screenplay co-written by Jonze and author and McSweeney's publisher Dave Eggers. Where the Wild Things Are is ultimately a story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in.

One of the most debated over and sought after audiophile titles, Casino Royale has graced many "Top Ten" lists for decades. This quirky soundtrack, to the equally zany James Bond spoof, features music and arrangements by the prolific and very hip Burt Bacharach. The highlight of the set is a breathy rendition of "The Look of Love," by the late Dusty Springfield. The main theme and supporting incidental music are by Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass. The sound captured by the young engineer (but soon-to-be Super Producer, Phil Ramone) is still stunning, more than 30 years later. This Four Disc 45RPM Box Set is now available for the first time on Classic Records Clarity Quiex SV-P 200g Vinyl.

Pal Joey was a Rodgers and Hart musical debuting on Broadway in 1941 and featuring Gene Kelly as Lounge Lizard Joey Evans. For the 1957 film adaptation Frank Sinatra plays the male lead and Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak play his love interests. The soundtrack features Sinatra singing many of his best Rodgers and Hart material such as, "The Lady Is A Tramp," "There's A Small Hotel" and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," however, the female voices heard on several of the tracks are not the voices of Rita Hayworth or Kim Novak. Rita Hayworth almost never did her own singing in her films, and the voice on this soundtrack is actually the voice of Jo Ann Greer, while the voice of Kim Novak is actually the voice of Trudy Erwin. In 1957 Sinatra's singing and performing was at its peak and this film and its soundtrack, the best Sinatra ever did, is an essential document of that.

200 Gram Clarity Vinyl LP - Single 33/45
"The Look Of Love," everyone's favorite track from Casino Royale," takes center stage here on this highly-collectible 2 side/2 speed set featuring the silky and sultry vocal dalliances of the great Dusty Springfield. This is a comparison disc cut at 33 1/3 RPM on one side and at 45 RPM on the other. The amount of information and level on both sides is the same with the only differences being the speed at which the lathe was traveling during cutting and that a cartridge can better track the 45 RPM side compared with the 33 RPM side. At 33 Dusty sounds alive, at 45 she is in the room with you! Available now on Classic Records Clarity Vinyl SVP-II 200g.
Clarity Vinyl represents the ultimate in vinyl formulations because it is comprised of over 90% of the highest quality co-polymer available, a key component in vinyl pellets used for manufacturing vinyl records. Further, Clarity Vinyl has no carbon black additive, common in vinyl formulas for LPs. Carbon Black contains trace metals that become magnetized and cause electrical distortions in cartridges during playback that smears the sound. By taking out the Carbon Black, Classic Records is able to dramatically reduce the electrical distortions and thus bring more clarity to the playback process, providing a more realistic musical experience to the listener and LP enthusiast.

One of the most anticipated blockbusters of 2009, Watchmen is an adaptation of the landmark Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons graphic novel series. Set in an alternative 1985 in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society and the world is on the brink of nuclear war, Music From The Motion Picture Watchmen is as wildly adventurous as the film; from My Chemical Romance covering Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row” and 1960s classics from Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin to unforgettable gems from Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.
Music From The Motion Picture Watchman Track Listing

3. The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan
4. The Sound Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel

6. I'm Your Boogie Man - KC & The Sunshine Band
7. You're My Thrill - Billie Holiday

Premiér™ Vinyl Record Cleaner is a mild precision cleaner formulated to clean, preserve and protect precious audio recordings. New DuPont solvent technology -- just invented in 2000 --enables Premiér™ to easily out-perform any other old-style LP cleaning system on the market today. In fact, it’s as good or even better than the old Freon® solvent cleaners which everybody used thirty years ago.
The solvent at the heart of this extraordinary cleaner has three characteristics which make it the best vinyl cleaner on the market today.
First, the solvent has a very low surface tension and very low viscosity. This means that Premiér™ is much, much 'wetter' than water. Unlike water, Premiér™ won’t bead-up on the waxy surface of an LP but instead it will spread out, flowing into the grooves and dissolving light oils and fingerprints. (We know you never touch the surface of your LPs, but there’s just no telling some folks.)
Secondly, Premiér™ is very heavy -- nearly twice as heavy as water, and much heavier than dust or the little bits of mold release compounds left on the LP by the stamping machine. This enables Premiér™ to get under the contamination on the record and displace it -- it literally 'floats' the contamination away, just like a ship floats in the ocean.
But it gets even better. One little-known fact about LPs is that they accumulate static, just like that cheap shag carpeting your parents put in the family room when you were a kid. Remember the jolt of electricity you got when you walked across the room and touched a doorknob? Well, the same thing happens to LPs as you slide them in and out of their sleeves or even just walk across a room with one in your hand (although obviously at much lower voltages). At the microscopic scale of a record groove and a dust particle, that tiny voltage acts like a powerful magnet and locks the dust particles onto the surface of the record. But Premiér™ features a special additive which breaks those 'static' bonds, freeing the dust to float off the LP. This unleashes the 'like new' sound that’s trapped in your LPs -- getting rid of the static means you get rid of the dust, along with the snaps and pops and cracks which drive you nuts.
Does it work? You bet. A skeptical Tom Lyle wrote in The $ensible Sound that "The results are impressive… I was amazed how silent the vinyl was." More recently, in Stereophile Michael Fremer wrote "Most importantly, after that first play the stylus remained clean, with no residue or dirt stuck to it.' No dust, no noise, just pure sound"
Here’s a couple of other useful features about Premiér™:
* Premiér™ dries briskly, so it can be used in conjunction with other LP cleaning systems.
* Premiér™ can clean LPs, CDs and DVDs, plus all the recording heads, motors, relays, dials, connectors and cables found on modern stereo systems. It also is safe for keyboards, test gear and even the screens on laptop computers and PDAs.
* Premiér™ is nonflammable so it’s safe to have around the house.
* Premiér™ has almost no aroma so it’s inconspicuous to use.
* Premiér™ is completely ozone-safe, is generally non-toxic and is considered very safe for people and the planet. Although we know people who use Premiér™ on operating electronics, it is neither approved nor recommended by Micro Care for that use.
