One of the finest jazz soundtracks to come out of the ‘50s, “The Man With The Golden Arm” is taken from the Otto Preminger film of the same name. Preminger was always very jazz influenced, and on this film he took his chances with Elmer Bernstein. The 1955 movie is about a former heroin addict, Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra). For this movie, Elmer Bernstein composed perhaps the most brilliant jazz score. The drum, Frankie’s own instrument, provides the rhythmic basis of the score. In the film’s opening it’s beat is alternately steady and agitated, just like Frankie’s life; meanwhile, the brass screams and whirls out of control, mirroring Frankie’s desperation as he runs off in search of one “last” fix

Two Classic Everly Brothers Albums Pressed On A Single 180-Gram Vinyl LP
While the Everlys’ sound was diluted by more elaborate production in the ‘60s, that’s not at all true on this LP, which is one of their very best. Included are six stellar contributions by Boudleaux Bryant and Felice Bryant (particularly “Some Sweet Day,” “Sleepless Nights,” and “You Thrill Me (Through and Through)”), one of Don Everly’s best compositions (“So Sad”), and incredible harmony singing throughout. On ’A Date With The Everly Brothers’ there are some very fine songs. Particularly good are the smash hit “Cathy’s Clown,” their raucous cover of Little Richard’s “Lucille,” “Love Hurts” (which preceded Roy Orbison’s hit version), and “So How Come” (covered by the Beatles in 1963).

This is some of Garland’s finest work and shows a legendary talent at her best in a variety of song styles. Her voice is as close to perfection on these tracks as any performer could ever hope to achieve. Her voice is emotionally beautiful and powerfully charged. If you haven’t experienced Judy Garland, you’ll be amazed at the simultaneous power, softness, and even vulnerability in her voice, all displayed at the same time on many tracks such as, of course, “Over The Rainbow.” This album captures the songs of her career, and the careers of so many great stage singers from vaudeville and beyond. Definitely one of her best recordings available...especially on vinyl!

One of Fitzgerald’s most acclaimed live performances. At this concert in Berlin, Fitzgerald improvised lyrics for “Mack the Knife” after forgetting the original lyrics. In recognition of this, she received the Best Female Vocal Performance. This album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. During her Scat solo on ‘How High the Moon’, Fitzgerald quotes the Charlie Parker composition ’Ornithology’, which is in fact based on the chord changes for ’How High the Moon’, as a springboard for her own scat improvisation. This recording of ’How High the Moon’ is considered one of Fitzgerald’s best scat solos, if not one of the best in jazz. “Ella in Hollywood” features several songs that serve as starting points for Ella’s seemingly effortless scat solos, and a selection of beautiful ballads. This album features Ella at the height of her vocal powers
