Original Sun Singles 1956-60The incendiary singles Jerry Lee Lewis cut for Sun Records in the mid 1950s and early 1960s left a footprint on the face of popular music and forged the backbone of rock 'n' roll itself. Which means that when it comes to rock 'n' roll, it doesn't get any more essential than Sundazed's roundup of 28 of the Killer's rowdiest, raunchiest and most rollicking Sun sides such as Great Balls of Fire, Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On, Crazy Arms, Breathless and many more. Ricky Sings AgainRicky Nelson Ricky Sings Again on Numbered Limited Edition LP from Mobile Fidelity Silver Label
Foundation-Establishing Rock n' Roll Album Includes Eternal Hit Lonesome Town
A Late 1950s Vocal and Instrumental Touchstone: Nelson Comes Into His Own, Moving Away from Teen Pop and Towards Serious Rockabilly
Stellar Backing Band Includes Elvis Presley Sideman/Guitarist James Burton and Backing Vocalists the Jordanaires
Also Includes Top 10 Singles Believe What You Say, It's Late, and Never Be Anyone Else But You;
Superb Sound: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
Ricky Nelson will forever be identified with the ageless single Lonesome Town. The career-defining smash is included here, on a record that arguably remains the picturesque idol's peak moment, a 1959 set on which the singer moves away from teen pop and towards serious rock nl' roll and rockabilly on par with the likes of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Loaded with material expressly written for Nelson as well as tunes penned by Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, and featuring an all-star session musician band, Ricky Sings Again is a foundation-building 1950s album.
Exceeding the fidelity of any prior analog pressing and affording a warmth missing from Capitol's out-of-print digital reissues, this Silver Label LP, pressed at RTI and mastered on Mobile Fidelity's internationally acclaimed mastering system, teems with detail, presence, dynamics, and authority. With help from his legendary father, Ozzie, Nelson enjoyed superb studio production, heard here in the form of balanced instrumentation, natural tonalities, wide and deep soundstages, and you-are-there vocals. Studio dimensions, too, come across with palpable body and precision. Since the record is a collection, some of the tracks are in mono, others in early stereo.
Backed by a stellar band that includes Elvis Presley guitarist James Burton and in-demand studio bassist James Kirkland, Nelson delivers what remains a 1950s classic that stands up to everything recorded by his famous contemporaries. Burton mimics the sound of a train on One Of These Mornings, just one of the myriad tunes here on which the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member lays down fabulous lines and rockabilly licks that both shade and support the concise melodies. While largely recognized for the melancholy ballad Lonesome Town, one of four Top 10 singles on the set, Ricky Sings Again is as much about early rock n' roll and extraordinary singing. About that voice.
Simultaneously tender and rollicking, innocent and mature, Nelson conveys a rainbow of emotions, pouring over country-flavored weepers and beat-driven rockabilly numbers with equal parts sensitivity, smoothness, and sincerity. A surfeit of heavenly background harmonies and innovative guitar-led breaks make masterpieces out of upbeat offerings such as You Tear Me Up as well as slow-dance invitations like Old Enough to Love. Add the Jordanaires on back-up vocals, and there's something for everyone here.
No matter the performance, Nelson demonstrates time and again on Ricky Sings Again why he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the institution's second year of existence, and why, even more so than Elvis during 1958-59, he was the period's leading singles artist.

Wildcat ShakeoutWorshipped by rock gods such as Little Richard and Gene Vincent, flamboyant gospel pianist S Q Reeder Jr was tempted into the recording studio several times in 1958 to demonstrate his secular capabilities.
However, the resulting Wildcat Shakeouts, by the renamed Esquerita, were deemed far too extreme even for black radio... Judge for yourself!
At the very dawn of the UK's rock 'n' roll revival in the late 1960s, Jeffrey Kruger's Ember Records launched its Speciality subsidiary to concentrate on back catalogue rhythm & blues and rock 'n' roll. Unlike the vast majority of reissue labels from that time, however, Speciality made its name with left-field reissues from a variety of US labels, including compilations of Ella Mae Morse & Freddie Slack, The Johnny Otis Show, The Jodimars and, most startlingly, an LP collection of wild rock 'n' roll by the uniquely-named Esquerita titled Wildcat Shakeout.
Although enjoying a slew of singles, EPs and even an LP in the US, Esquerita had just one single release in the UK in the 1950s, which was so rare that most rock 'n' roll fans were unaware of him. From the Ember sleeve photo, collectors assumed he was a disciple of Little Richard and even a cursory sampling of the enclosed tracks seemed to bear this out, but the truth may have been the complete opposite; S Q Reeder Jr always insisted that it was he who had influenced both the music and fashion-sense of the then musically-directionless Little Richard when they met in the early 1950s, and even Richard has had to admit that our man taught him how to hammer the piano into submission!
Fantastic Voyage now resurrects the Wildcat Shakeout LP in all its glory, bolstered by a handful of additional tracks, thus gathering together all of his original 1958-1959 releases.
As his 1950s promo material declared, His sensational music, just like everything about him, is truly the farthest out that man has ever gone. Arguably, it still is...1. Rockin' The Joint

Originally released in 1957 on the Bethlehem label, this obscure album shows Charles Mingus exploring new territory with his sextet while incorporating vocals into his work. On the opening track, Scenes In The City, Mel Stewart performs a spoken word piece written by actor and playwright Lonne Elder III and the legendary Langston Hughes. The track is a snapshot of Harlem and NYC in the 1950s and for that alone this album stands out in the Mingus repertoire. The Essential Dave BrubeckAn amazingly comprehensive anthology-thanks to Brubeck, who personally selected the tracks!
In the 1950s and '60s, few American jazz artists were as influential, and fewer still were as popular, as Dave Brubeck. At a time when the cooler sounds of West Coast jazz began to dominate the public face of the music, Brubeck proved there was an audience for the style far beyond the confines of the in-crowd, and with his emphasis on unusual time signatures and adventurous tonalities, Brubeck showed that ambitious and challenging music could still be accessible.LP 1

Jazz Goes To CollegeImport
In the spring of 1954 Jazz-great Dave Brubeck did a tour of North American college campuses. Paul Desmond (alto sax), Bob Bates (bass), and Joe Dodge (drums) joined him and their support of Brubeck is uniformly flawless, ultimately producing what many consider as the most memorable music in the artist's cannon.
Indeed the genre gets schooled as the quartet leans in with striking energy and finesse. Enjoyed among college students in the 1950s and early 1960s both the tour and album brought Jazz to a whole new generation.1. Balcony Rock

Studio One Story'Studio One Story' is a documentary this is both a staggering slice of musical history and a definitive guide to Studio One, Jamaica's greatest ever record company, and its legendary founder, Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd.
Often described as the Motown of Jamaica, or 'The University Of Reggae', Studio One is where the careers of literally hundreds of reggae artists began: Bob Marley And The Wailers, Alton Ellis, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, The Skatalites, Burning Spear and Sugar Minott, to name but a few. Studio One is the 'foundation' label of Jamaican Reggae.
One and a half years in the making, 'Studio One Story' is a truly unique documentary in which the late Clement Dodd gave unprecedented personal access to tell the previously untold story of how Studio One literally shaped the rise of reggae music from the 1950s onwards through to the late 1970s.
This is the true story of reggae music and its Jamaican roots told from the inside: From the rise of Kington's sound systems in the 1940s and 1950s, through to the evolution of a Jamaican music industry (and Studio One's dominance) in the 1960s and the worldwide success of reggae in the 1970s.LP 1

UNIM-OJC-451xHoward Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars
In The Solo SpotlightWhen the earliest of these pieces were recorded in 1954, the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach had become one of Southern California's busiest clubs and a thriving center of West Coast jazz. A regiment of bright young musicians tired of life on the road had settled in the Los Angeles area, where it was possible for a lucky few to make a daytime living in the studios and satisfy their artistic needs by playing jazz. Howard Rumsey gathered some of the most talented of these young men as the Lighthouse All-Stars. Many of Rumsey's sidemen have survived as durable jazz stars, among them Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Conte Candoli and the late Frank Rosolino. Half of the charts in this collection are by Bill Holman, already established in the early 1950s as one of the finest jazz arrangers.1. Funny Frank

Featuring a forty-member orchestra and fifteen-piece backing band, the album contains a series of cover versions of 1950s and 1960s Italian pop music. Patton conceived of the album while living in Bologna, and became attracted to music he heard on the radio featuring pop singers backed by orchestras. Released on May 4, 2010, through Patton's record label Ipecac Recordings, Mondo Cane has been met with favorable responses from music critics. Big Smoke London TownThe Dustaphonics occupy the space where the talented few, committed and bright, stick to their guns'. Some groups are capable of doing things more intensely than others. The Dustaphonics is a group that knows how to grab your attention and get people dancing. The music is a fantastic mash-up that details their musical influences, from booze-soaked 1950s rhythm and blues, vintage stomping 'buttshaker' soul, '60s garage rock and british beat / r&b, Vegas lounge, sleazy grind instrumentals and surf guitar. And the whole deal is sealed and delivered with the spirit of '70s punk. Settin' The PaceThis is John Coltrane from the period when he was a member of Miles Davis' legendary 1950s quintet, accompanied by fellow quintet members Red Garland and Paul Chambers. This is Coltrane in a relaxed bop mode, making some swinging, relaxed jazz in the vein of Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz (the latter in his more boppish mode). This is not the fire-breathing saxophonist of the mid-'60s, but a player who was beginning to push against the boundaries, all the while playing with thoughtful, imaginative lyricism. It's a set of little-known pop tunes of the era, with the exception of Jackie McLean's Little Melonae. Anyone who likes the mainstream jazz of the '50s, or Miles' music of that time, or Coltrane fans who want to hear their idol in an easygoing context, should pick this up.

Stray Cats is the first album from Rockabilly band Stray Cats, first released in the UK by Arista in 1981. It was successful in Britain, peaking at No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart, and produced the UK Top 40 hits Runaway Boys (No. 9), Stray Cat Strut (No. 11) and Rock This Town (No. 9). The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later listed Rock This Town as one of the songs that shaped rock and roll.
Stray Cats debut album came hot on the heels of the two hit singles Runaway Boys and Rock This Town, both energy filled rockabilly songs that hearkened back to the 1950s era of pure rock & roll with an updated, clean '80s sound highlighted by the prominent double bass playing of Lee Rocker and drumming of Slim Jim Phantom.

Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, 1928 - August 8, 1975) was a jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. Adderley is remembered for his work with trumpeter Miles Davis, including the album "Somethin' Else" (1958). This was recorded during Adderley's membership in the Miles Davis Sextet and is one of the few post 1955 appearances of Miles Davis as a sideman. Indeed, Davis plays several of the first solos, composed the bluesy title track and, according to the liner notes, chose most of the material. She was the sultry film starlet-turned-torch singer-come-TV actress whose dusky alto captivated a generation. Julie London was discovered while running a department store elevator in Hollywood.
Just three years earlier the bountiful 15 year old, born Julie Peck to her parents, a song-and-dance duo of the vaudeville era, was singing on her parents' radio show. When she started working in the movies in the 1940s, she changed her name to London. During the course of a celebrated career in acting and music, she made more than 30 albums.
The sultry-voiced actress, who was once married to Dragnet producer-star Jack Webb, had a hit record with the 1950s single Cry Me a River. The single debuted in 1955, sold three million copies and remained in demand into the 1960s.
Analogue Productions has brought back Julie London sings Latin In A Satin Mood in damatic, deserving fashion. Remastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, and plated and pressed on 200-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, the crispness and vibrancy of this recording is spectacular.
Exotic and Latin albums were big deals in the 1950s and early '60s, and singers as diverse as Dean Martin, Lena Horne, and Peggy Lee were recording with castanets and bongo drums. Like Peggy Lee, London combines a restrained vocal approach with jazz phrasing and a cool attitude with icy sex appeal on this album of relaxing Latin standards. Julie does look beautiful on the cover, and the backup male mariachi-esque serenade ads to the romantic ambiance.
And as to the cover, expect only top-notch reproduction for our Analogue Productions reissue. Originally a single LP jacket, we've upgraded to a gatefold incorporating more original photographs provided by Universal.
London appeared in nearly two dozen motion pictures during the 1940s and '50s; she was best known to TV audiences as nurse Dixie McCall on the 1970s hospital drama Emergency! She was hired on Emergency! by Webb, her then-former spouse, to co-star with her second husband, jazz musician Bobby Troup. Troup, who composed the iconic musical hit Route 66 played a doctor on the show and it was he who helped sign Julie to the Liberty record label.
Describing her smoky vocal style, London once said, It's only a thimbleful of a voice, and I have to use it close to a microphone. But it is a kind of over-smoked voice, and it automatically sounds intimate. A style inimitable, in our estimation.

Violent HeartsShimmering Stars is a three-piece dream pop act from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Their music embodies an attempt at drawing out and illuminating the subtle darkness inherent in the seemingly wholesome, innocent music of the 1950s and '60s. The result filters older influences like the Everly Brothers, Del Shannon, Phil Spector and Bo Diddley through a contemporary indie lens. Songs about being in love, not being in love, the painfully modern condition of floating in a state of suspended adolescence, all tinted with the slight self-deprication of knowing how trite it is to be writing songs about these things at all.
Shimmering Stars create reverb-soaked pop songs, full of arching harmonies, pulsing rhythms, and exquisite melodies, often with dark undertones, all while adhering to the timeless structural qualities of the seminal songs that inspired them. The songs are haunting and sublime, at times blissful, and at others heart breaking.
The band began as a recording project in the Spring of 2010. After stumbling upon some old live footage of the Everly Brothers, Rory McClure holed up in his parents garage in Kamloops, British Columbia to record the first demos. That first recording environment rendered Shimmering Stars distinctly dusty atmospheric sound and established a conscious insertion into the garage music continuum. Violent Hearts is the debut LP from Shimmering Stars, released by Hardly Art and Almost Musique.1. Believe
