    Japan 3/11/11: A Benefit Album

In early March of 2011, Japan suffered one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, a tsunami which devastated its northern coast, and a nuclear disaster the scope of which is still not fully understood.

23 artists including of Montreal, St. Vincent, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, David Bazan, Joan of Arc, Owen, Casiokids, STRFKR, and many more spent the past several months entering the studio and going through their song archives to donate songs to this compilation in an effort to aid the victims of the tsunami and the negligence which led to the disaster that continues to affect Japan.

In addition, a handful of local bands from Champaign-Urbana (Polyvinyls hometown), Tulsa, and San Francisco agreed to be on the compilation and will be organizing benefit shows in their respective areas.

1993's Music is the official debut full-length album from the Omaha, NE-bred, rap/reggae/funk/metal quintet 311 featuring Nick Hexum (vocals/guitar/programming), Tim Mahoney (guitar), Chad Sexton (drums), P-Nut (bass) and SA Martinez (vocals/turntables). The album includes reworked versions of material from the group's previously self-released EPs Dammit! (1990), Unity (1991) and Hydroponic (1992) along with what were some brand new penned cuts. The diverse outing offers an early glimpse of the formula that the band would turn into mainstream success on subsequent releases ie raw energy, infectious grooves, catchy hooks and a positive, feel-good message. Includes the popular single Do You Right.

311, the eclectic musical quintet whose unique and hypnotic blend of reggae, funk, hard rock and hip-hop reached a world audience with the success of their self-titled 1995 album, return with Transistor, their fourth release for Capricorn Records and their most fully realized and ambitious recording yet. It's a heady blend of styles that makes the amalgam that is 311 work so wonderfully, and as guitarist-vocalist Nick Hexum has said, Transistor is our way of saying that all living things are connected, that we are all conductors of electricity -- that we're all part of the same massive energy source and in this way, we're all equal.

    From Chaos (Awaiting Repress)

Upon 311's vigorous return, vocalist S.A. Martinez declares, I'm on a new high with a pen and a pad, and for fun I attend a jam that's super bad. While the members of the Omaha-bred quintet aren't lyrical rocket scientists, these disciples of positivity have nonetheless re-emerged on a new high with a jam that's super bad. From Chaos astonishes and impresses with considerable energy and focus, proving itself as the album 311 has always been capable of making. With Tim Mahoney's razor-edged riffing and Nick Hexum and Martinez's super-charged vocals, their Volcano label debut rocks harder and rides smoother than each preceding effort.

Amidst their signature hip-hop/heavy rock/reggae hybrid, 311 additionally blends surf guitar over jungle beats, merges punk guitar with dancehall, and introduces ska, à la Hexum's autobiographical I'll Be Here Awhile, to their sonic repertoire. Tracks such as the carpe diem-inspired Wake Your Mind Up and the boastful Sick Tight prove the quintet hasn't forsaken their old-school formula, while the amorous Amber, perhaps their most charming composition, exhibits a melodic versatility and musical ambition unlike many of their pigeonholed contemporaries. Under the technical lead of veteran producer and engineer Ron Saint Germain (aka Saint), From Chaos effectively captures the energy of the live shows, per bassist P-Nut, and despite the band's growing musical complexity, each selection remains a perfect candidate for the well-traveled road ahead. Drummer Chad Sexton affirms it's our best-performed record, and despite the album's semi-ironic title, he couldn't be more right. Whether employing the computer or stereo for amusement, From Chaos is the sonic cornerstone for remarkably original rap-metal. ~ Jacob N. Lunders, Rovi

Jeff Mangum has always been Neutral Milk Hotel's central figure, and he's used that moniker for everything from his own solo excursions to marching band-like musical happenings. The group's debut album, On Avery Island, is a wonderfully dense hodgepodge of song and sound, an ambitious, eclectic work that reflects the nomadic lifestyle that Mangum and his friends shared at the time. VS: The Definitive Edition

Mission of Burma's second and final studio album Vs. was released in the fall of 1982, just months before they broke up when the band was at the pinnacle of their songwriting and performing skills. Vs. is a strange and exciting record, full of depth and harmonic color. Unlike its predecessor, it begins slowly, with a fever dream of guitar workouts, drone and tremelo, in Circles, Trem Two and Dead Pool. The album pivots around the central track, Mica, perhaps the band's finest moment about a woman's descent into unreality and madness. At the end, Vs. expands with the triumphant melodic anthems The Ballad Of Johnny Burma and That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate.

This Definitive Edition of Vs. now on a Deluxe Gatefold 180g Double LP looks and sounds better than ever and it includes four bonus tracks (previously on the Ryko CD); tracks 13-15 were unreleased studio outtakes from the Vs. sessions, and 16 was the B-side of the 1982 ôTrem Twoö 7″ single.

    Hell Awaits (Awaiting Repress)

With their second full length album and third overall, Slayer upped the ante in every way possible. Breakneck tempos, gruesome lyrics and proper production gave the band a progressive and distinct sound that was becoming all their own. Hell Awaits is where the band began to sound truly sinister and evil and Dave Lombardo's famous double bass drumming brilliantly propells the lightspeed riffing and twisted solos of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman here. Bassist Tom Araya's dark and demonic lyrics touched on everything from the mind of a serial killer in Kill Again to vampires on At Dawn They Sleep and the unhinged lust of Necrophiliac. Hell Awaits stands as one of best black and thrash metal documents of the '80s and its influence is vast and undeniable.

Remastered From Original Tapes by Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

By the time The Jesus Lizard released Down in 1994, alt-rock had long exploded and penetrated the commercial mainstream. Despite being a hair more subdued than the noise-rock band's previous releases, the still-manic Down didn't break through, but unlike most releases of the time, it didn't compromise either. The Jesus Lizard's final studio album for Touch & Go and last record produced by Steve Albini, it's also the last essential statement the band put down on tape. And it's never sounded better.

Part of Touch & Go's stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, Down has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Down in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. There's greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified midrange, and an incredible boost in energy. Benefiting from Albini's dry, spare, and no-frills production, indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, blunt, or fervent.

Vinyl packaged in deluxe gatefold album jacket with 12 x 24 double sided color insert including never before seen photos, and extensive liner notes by the band and by journalists who were there when it was all happening.

Citay's 2007 album Little Kingdom made reference to everything from Thin Lizzy and acoustic Led Zeppelin, to Popul Vuh and early Mike Oldfield. From the ambient textures of White Rainbows' Eye on Dollar remix to Cornershop's Anthony Saffery adding sitar and percussion to First Fantasy, these are anything but typical remix rave-ups.
