    Play It Strange (Discontinued)

In The Red is proud to announce the release of the new full-length from San Francisco's Fresh & Onlys, Play It Strange. After two albums (on Castle Face and Woodsist, respectively) and too many singles and EPs to count, The Fresh & Onlys deliver their most solid outing yet. Recorded by studio whiz Tim Green during an eight-day session, Play It Strange marks the band's first recording in an actual recording studio. On 2 analog tape! The results are nothing short of incredible. For those unfamiliar with The Fresh & Onlys, their sound draws from jangly psychedelia, Morricone-style Western twang, dark vibes a la Bad Seeds/Gun Club, melodic '60s sunshine pop and a hint of garage rock swagger.

2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage And Psychedelia From USA And Destination Records

Though the 60s garage band explosion was felt in every corner ofthe country, the local uprising of talent in Chicago thrived unlike anywhere else. The Windy City had the perfect infrastructure in place; from a booming population of teenagers, to hip music stores in every suburb, a proliferation of teen clubs willing to take their money, and a powerhouse radio station (WLS) equally up to promoting local bands. When it came to giving local groups a shot at 45 rpm fame, no Chicago labelnot even the hallowed Dunwich Recordswas more prolific than USA Records. USAs Jim Golden was such a strong supporter of Midwest talent that he started up a second label focused solely in this area, Destination Records.

A quarter century into the CD age, its hard to believe these pivotal labels have never been properly anthologized. Until now, that is! Sundazed once again arrives to the rescue with an exhaustive dive into the pure, undiluted garage side of USA and Destination Records; tapping into everything from priceless artifacts from the Lost Agency, the Foggy Notions, and Park Avenue Playground to label hitmakers the Buckinghams, the Cryan Shames, and the Flock at their most rockin. Theres so much impossibly great music on these labels, we had to expand this collection to 40 tracks.

The album artwork is stuffed with rare photos, band bios, and an interview with the legendary Jim Golden. For a full course of Chicago 66 garage at its finest, look no further than 2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60s Garage & Psychedelia from USA and Destination Records!

We're Gonna Change The World - The 60's Chicago Garage Sound Of Quill Records

Chicago was a great place to be if you were a member of a rock & roll combo in the mid-'60s -- there were plenty of teen clubs, radio stations were happy to play local product, and several Windy City labels were ready and willing to take hometown acts into the studio and get their music into stores. Dunwich Records and USA Records were the biggest labels in Chicago and both scored a handful of national hits, but they were far from the only game in town, and Peter Wright, a successful record promo man who went on to manage the New Colony Six, ran one of the city's most interesting small labels, Quill Records, which released top-notch sides on a number of fine groups and licensed a few of his masters to larger labels out of town.

While Quill only lasted a bit less than two years (from 1966 to 1967), their output was impressive stuff from an eclectic variety of acts, and the great reissue label Sundazed, only a few months after releasing a definitive two-disc overview of the USA Records catalog (2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage and Psychedelia from U.S.A. and Destination Records), have unearthed 19 highlights from Quill's archives on We're Gonna Change the World! The 60's Chicago Garage Sound of Quill Productions.

Many of Quill's acts followed the trends of the major British acts of the day, but hardly all of them; the Exterminators deliver a screed against long hair and take an America first position on rock with the over the top Declaration of Independence '65, Hot Pastrami by the Don Caron Orchestra is a high-powered instrumental dominated by honking saxophones and fuzzy guitars, and I'm Going to Change the World by the Commons Ltd. suggests the psychedelic revolution that was lurking around the corner while still maintaining a high degree of sneer and swagger.

And even the acts that were looking to the U.K. for inspiration were turning their eyes to unusual places; the Delights were clearly obsessed with the Zombies, so much so that their original tune Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Moment mimics their style just as well as their cover of Just Out of Reach, and the Skunks, who true to their name bleached stripes into their hair, also leaned to the moody side of British pop with Don't Ask Why and a fine cover of the Beatles' It's Only Love (though Do the Duck is a raw and fuzzy celebration of some would-be dance craze).

    2. Do The Duck - The Skunks
    3. Yes I Know - The Prophets

Don't Press Your Luck! The In Sound Of 60's Connecticut

Connecticut had a solid garage rock scene in the mid-'60s, and more than a few of the best bands in the region logged time at Wallingford's Trod Nossel Studios (aka Syncron Sound), a recording facility run by Thomas Doc Cavalier, truly an unlikely champion of local rock & roll. Cavalier was a successful dentist who gave up his practice to manage New England rockers the Bram Rigg Set and the Shags (not to be confused with the infamous Wiggin sisters), and when Syncron Sound (where both bands had recorded) fell on hard times, he bought the studio, changed the name, and turned it into a profitable business that's still running today.

Don't Press Your Luck! collects material from a handful of New England acts who recorded at Trod Nossel and were overseen by Cavalier, and there's little arguing that the folks at the studio knew their stuff -- compared to many compilations of '60s garage rarities, these tracks sound lively and robust, crackling with teenage energy but recorded with a skill that didn't blunt the enthusiasm of the musicians. (Bob Irwin's superb remastering is also to be commended.) And the music is pretty great, too -- the Wildweeds' classic No Good to Cry (featuring a pre-NRBQ Al Anderson) is the standout here, but there's also some moody beat stuff from the Shags (Don't Press Your Luck, Hide Away), fuzztone-powered angst from the Bram Rigg Set (Sleepless Nights, You Don't Love Me, and a potent cover of Them's I Can Only Give You Everything), and intriguing weirdness from the misanthropic Fourth Ryke (Please Leave, You're Cutting Out).

While you'd expect high goofiness from a group called Uranus and the Five Moons, their material is actually smart and adventurous (Nothing Remains, SSS Happenin' Here). Some radio spots recorded at Trod Nossel also make the cut, as does a demonstration of the wonders of multi-track recorded based around a session by the Shags. Garage fanatics and folks with a taste for Connecticut history will both find this set to be well worth investigating.

    Will The Guns Come Out

Hanni El-Khatib, touted as one of the most talented acts in L.A. right now is a a one-man band, singing, songwriting and producing all on his own. His debut album, Will The Guns Come Out features a synthesized mix of '50s and '60s garage rock, soul, blues and even a bit of folk. His attitude is his greatest attribute, claiming to strive to write songs about anyone whos ever been shot or hit by a train and he brings with him the rawness of Phil Spector, Jack White, the Shangri-Las and the Black Keys all at once.

    Cassette

In late 2013, Preoccupations (then known as Viet Cong) released a small-run cassette EP only available on tour. Over the course of a year, Matt Flegel and Scott Munro worked in their basement studio with a mess of old and run down equipment to build a set of fresh material.Joined by bandmates Daniel Christiansen and Michael Wallace, the band completed work on a debut cassette. What emerged from the studio was a mixture of sharply-angled rhythm workouts and euphoric '60s garage pop-esque melodies, balanced with a penchant for drone-y,VU-styled downer moments, and became a hard-to-find classic.

"The best garage band in America since the '60s. Very primitive they made
people with Les Pauls and Marshall amps look like idiots."
    - Jack White

Recorded at a party in a Detroit storefront in 1988, this live recording of the
Gories captures the band at their apex. The ferocity, intensity and grit that come
through this record is a testament to why the Gories oeuvre has been heavily
mined for the past two decades by hundreds of poseurs, pretenders and johnny-come-latelys
The dual-guitar attack of Dan Kroha's smooth Fender Jaguar and
Mick Collins screechy Kent Videocaster, coupled with the snare-less, cymbal-less,
bass drum-less primitive drumming of Peggy O'Neill forms a perfect meld of
40's blues, 50's R&B, 60's garage and 70's punk. Dare we say it, but in terms of
in uence and reach, the Gories were the Velvet Underground of their day

    Big Smoke London Town

The Dustaphonics occupy the space where the talented few, committed and bright, stick to their guns'. Some groups are capable of doing things more intensely than others. The Dustaphonics is a group that knows how to grab your attention and get people dancing. The music is a fantastic mash-up that details their musical influences, from booze-soaked 1950s rhythm and blues, vintage stomping 'buttshaker' soul, '60s garage rock and british beat / r&b, Vegas lounge, sleazy grind instrumentals and surf guitar. And the whole deal is sealed and delivered with the spirit of '70s punk. Although the influences are vintage, there is something remarkably and distinctively fresh and progressive about their songs that takes the music beyond simple imitation and infuses it with tremendous energy and passion.

    No Chance Baby

For anyone with an overindulged appetite for '60s garage compilations, Oscar & the Majestics must seem like old friends. In Sundazeds exhaustive dig through the prized USA & Destination Records catalogs, no other act and that includes hit makers like the Buckinghams and Cryin Shames, came close to the coverage afforded Oscar Hamod & the Majestics. If the group had left more than five tracks in the USA vaults, no doubt Sundazed would have included more.

Well, that was before Oscar opened up his vast personal archives, undisturbed for over 40 years, allowing for this first-ever collection of his complete 60s output. This includes the bands best known USA sides, like the impossibly cool, fuzzed-out Soul Finger, as well as ultra-rare, Oscar-pressed singles (including the first official reissue of House of the Rising Sun 1969; an over the top rearrangement that suffers no shortage of Oscar-fuzz/Oscar-attitude.

Most rewarding of all, this set unleashes the unreleased Baby Under My Skin and I Feel Good; both seriously Kinky krunchers from the USA era. As a bonus, Sundazed blows the lid off the untold history of Mr. Hamod and his rockin crew in a package also crammed with vintage photos and rare 45 label scans.

    Distortions

Minneapolis was their home turf. But in the decades that followed, appreciation for Distortions swelled to tidal wave proportions among fans of amped-up, ramped-up, balls-to-the-wall rock'n'roll. Headlined by two red-hot, stone-cold killers, "Action Woman" and "Soul Searchin'"-both penned by producer Warren Kendrick-Distortions is arguably the greatest private-press garage band album of the era.

The Litter formed in 1966 as a merger between two popular Twin Cities combos, the Victors and the Tabs. They quickly established a reputation as the wildest, loudest band on the scene. Bill Strandlof was responsible for the incendiary, feedback-laced guitar work on "Action Woman"-a local hit for the band when released as a single in January 1967-but by the summer he'd been replaced by another fast-fingered guitar slinger, Zippy Caplan. Caplan's fiery leads helped ignite the remainder of Distortions, including smoking interpretations of the Who's "Substitute," the Small Faces' "Whatcha Gonna Do About It," an intense reading of "Codine," and a comprehensive reconstruction-destruction of "I'm A Man."

Sundazed is thrilled to present the first-ever from-the-masters vinyl reissue of Distortions, housed in the dead-cool original artwork and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Pure, unfiltered '60s garage rock excitement is just a needle-drop away.

    Uniquely Yours

A decade before he was topping the country charts, Joe Stampley fronted one of the deep souths most legendary and rockin 60s combos, the Uniques. Once signed to Shreveport, Louisiana-based Paula Records, the Uniques made waves nationally on their very first release, Not Too Long Ago. That pop classic (faithfully/recently covered by Nick Lowe) is just one of many highlights of their 66 debut LP, Uniquely Yours. According to the master tape, this record was originally going to be tagged The Uniques in Action; a shelved album title that could not have been more apt.

Finally reissued (and in fabulous mono, to boot), this is southern rock n soul at its finest; a real mÉlange of styles that swings wildly from deep-fried garage rock, frenzied frat-beat, infectious Stampley-penned pop, and gorgeously soulful ballads. From Presley and Gene Vincent to any Justice label 60s garage band worth mentioning, southerners have always littered their LPs with this latter fare. But when it comes to delivering a soulful ballad, Joe Stampley is up there with the very best of em. Uniquely Yours includes the groups all-time biggest regional hit, a cover of Art Nevilles All These Things (in its original mix, unadorned by string overdubs) and a Georgia (On My Mind) that simply blows away all other white boy soul renditions. But make no mistake, this is a largely uptempo set marked by the ferocious punk pace of You Aint Tuff, updated rockabilly funkiness of Fast Way of Living, blistering guitar workouts like Strange, plus some of the best damned covers ever waxed. For a positively unique album experience, Sundazed includes the classy period sleeve design from the original Paula release.

    Take It All In

Austin's own The Steps will release Take It All In, produced by Chris 'Frenchie' Smith (JET, Dandy Warhols, Explosions in the Sky). The EP distills the band's '60s influenced garage rock to its most potent and frenetic form.

Formed in 2005 while still in high school, The Steps first achieved international success with releases and tours in the U.K. and Japan. Launched by a strong Texas following, the band has shared the stage with Bob Dylan, The Raconteurs, and the Black Keys.

Born under the influence of classic rock in the Live Music Capital of the World, The Steps chisel through modern rock with '60s sensibilities. The band made their recording debut with a 7 vinyl single brought by Young and Lost Club Records (U.K.), followed by a tour of London. Their eponymous full length, produced by Chris 'Frenchie' Smith (Jet, Dandy Warhols) set up a short tour of Japan, where the band made several television and radio appearances.

    The Indestructible Sounds Of

This raw rhythm''n''beat garage-rock''n''roll combo, headed up by the ubiquitous veteran rocker, Sir Bald Diddley (aka Hipbone Slim), delivers super rough, tough and wild mid-'60's inspired sounds that are just about as frantic as a pack of dogs in a lamp post factory. It's British beat at its best, loaded with grab-your-throat guitar riffs, snarling vocals, wailing harp and much maraca shaking -- proper raw-as-you-like freakbeat, inspired by the likes of the Pretty Things, Kinks, Downliners Sect, Them, Birds, Stones, Yardbirds, Jimmy Reed, Sonics ...

    In This Mess

Jack Dalrymple has cultivated a near legendary status with his involvement in One Man Army, Swingin Utters, Dead To Me, and The Revolts. Of course, few musicians in punk rock possess a calling card like Jack's velvety vocals, but his song writing and guitar work are just as renowned. All three talents are on full display in Jack's ultra-stylized fuzz-punk and garage sound, which even incorporates elements of surf, '60s soul, and power-pop.

    Crossroads

The first-ever reissue of the private-press country-rock rarity by Colorado auto body painter, Marine,
and garage band lifer Kenny Knight-he played in the original `60s Black Flag-Crossroads recalls
a homebrew American Beauty-era Grateful Dead in its world-weary, low-key mood and indelible
songwriting. Faded, anxious, melancholy, and beautifully woozy, this out-of-time document belies its
1980 release date. Produced in collaboration with Numero Group, it features liner notes by writer
and collector Michael Klausman and Kenny himself.

    Lobby Star

Kitty has a playfulness and humour in her lyrics that I envy very much, and I know it won't be long until the rest of the world discovers many other things to love about her too. Finn Andrews (The Veils) // Lobby Star is Kitty Finer's debut EP, recorded at Bark studio, London and engineered/co-produced by Brian O'Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine). Guest musicians on the EP include Kitty's father Jem Finer alongside his own band mates Andrew Ranken and Darryl Hunt of The Pogues, Debsey Wykes (Dolly Mixture, Coming Up Roses and St Etienne) Finn Andrews (The Veils) and brass provided by Kitty's old school friends The JJ Horns. LOBBY STAR is an introduction to the worldly Londoner, Kitty Finer. These six tracks set the tone and welcome you to her sound which crosses genres, spans time, travels the world and lands on your decks today. Influenced by her mother's records (Wreckless Eric, The Ramones, The Nips, Kirsty MacColl, The Ronettes, DollyMixture, John Cooper Clarke, Blondie, Pulp, Peaches and Bongwater) Kitty Finer arrives at a sound that combines the soul, pop, punk, garage rock and 60s Girl band influences.

    Smith Westerns

Rummaging through 1970s glam, Phil Spector teen-pop, and Nuggets garage-punk with the youthful abandon of kids finding new toys in the attic, the Smith Westerns' self-titled debut exudes an earnestness almost as pure as its recording levels are deafening. Their simple, sweet choruses about boys and girls in love could spike the punch at a 1970s TV show school dance.

When singing guitarist Cullen Omori, his bassist brother Cameron, second guitarist Max Kakacek, and a drummer known as Hal have the tunes to make themselves heard over their vintage aesthetic, The Smith Westerns' teenage kicks are hard to beat. Take string-swept glam ballad Be My Girl. which softly punctuates one of the year's most wrenchingly innocent hooks with somewhat risque pick-up lines. There's less lyrical subtext, but no less raunchy production, on the glam-rock boogie of Girl in Love, a come-on cursorily addressing the fleetingness of youth. It's only fitting that the Smith Westerns both look and sound like the Black Lips' good-bad not-evil twins.

These guys are sort of literally true to their school, garage-rocker Miss Alex White is a fellow Northside College Prep magnet-school alum, and their time on the road with the likes of Jay Reatard and Nobunny is evident on fine 60s-style frat-rocker Gimme Some Time. With fuzzed-out xylophone, frenetic opener Dreams suggests the group's most recent tour with Girls and Los Campesinos! might serve them better for a follow-up. Diamond Boys almost earns its piano on the strength of its adolescent grandiosity, but We Stay Out lets lo-fi become the end rather than the means, with a guitar line that sounds like a bee buzzing underwater.

    The Mono Singles '68 - '72

Texas-bred singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Doug Sahm was one of the most important musicians ever to emerge from the Lone Star state, and an inspiration to multiple generations of roots-conscious rock 'n' rollers. Sahm did much of his most beloved work as leader of the seminal Sir Douglas Quintet, the audaciously eclectic band that first burst onto the national scene in 1965. With trusty sidekick Augie Meyers providing distinctive support on the Vox organ, the Quintet delivered an infectious, eclectic mix that encompassed Tex-Mex border pop, raw garage-rock, hipster honky-tonk, horn-driven R&B and more.

The Sir Douglas Quintet's most productive and influential period was its late-'60s/early-'70s stint with Mercury Records and its sister labels Smash and Philips. That period saw the SDQ relocate from Texas to San Francisco and record some of their most enduring and adventurous music. And that music never sounded better than on the mono mixes that graced the singles that the band released during that period, which are collected on this deluxe set.

The Mono Singles' 22 songs include the band's 1969 signature smash Mendocino, along with such Sahm standards as At the Crossroads, Dynamite Woman, Nuevo Laredo, Texas Me, And It Didn't Even Bring Me Down, Michoacan and his heartfelt rendition of Freddy Fender's Wasted Days, Wasted Nights, plus a selection of rare non-album B-sides. The collection also features Sahm's historic Nashville recording Be Real, which he released under the pseudonym Wayne Douglas in an attempt to break into the conservative mainstream country market.

This unique collection has been sourced from the original analog mono masters. The high-definition vinyl 2-LP set comes with extensive liner notes and lavish artwork.
