    Follow Me Down: Vanguard's Psychedelic Era 1966 - 1970

2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage And Psychedelia From USA And Destination Records

Though the 60s garage band explosion was felt in every corner ofthe country, the local uprising of talent in Chicago thrived unlike anywhere else. The Windy City had the perfect infrastructure in place; from a booming population of teenagers, to hip music stores in every suburb, a proliferation of teen clubs willing to take their money, and a powerhouse radio station (WLS) equally up to promoting local bands. When it came to giving local groups a shot at 45 rpm fame, no Chicago labelnot even the hallowed Dunwich Recordswas more prolific than USA Records. USAs Jim Golden was such a strong supporter of Midwest talent that he started up a second label focused solely in this area, Destination Records.

A quarter century into the CD age, its hard to believe these pivotal labels have never been properly anthologized. Until now, that is! Sundazed once again arrives to the rescue with an exhaustive dive into the pure, undiluted garage side of USA and Destination Records; tapping into everything from priceless artifacts from the Lost Agency, the Foggy Notions, and Park Avenue Playground to label hitmakers the Buckinghams, the Cryan Shames, and the Flock at their most rockin. Theres so much impossibly great music on these labels, we had to expand this collection to 40 tracks.

The album artwork is stuffed with rare photos, band bios, and an interview with the legendary Jim Golden. For a full course of Chicago 66 garage at its finest, look no further than 2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60s Garage & Psychedelia from USA and Destination Records!

One of the best albums of the late 60s and Tim Buckley's most underrated album, Happy Sad was a change-up pitch for the eclectic L.A. singer/songwriter. Sounding like a bit like Fred Neil's Capitol-era albums, Buckley and his small, acoustic-based ensemble create beautiful, jazz tinged folk-rock. On red vinyl.

Don't Press Your Luck! The In Sound Of 60's Connecticut

Connecticut had a solid garage rock scene in the mid-'60s, and more than a few of the best bands in the region logged time at Wallingford's Trod Nossel Studios (aka Syncron Sound), a recording facility run by Thomas Doc Cavalier, truly an unlikely champion of local rock & roll. Cavalier was a successful dentist who gave up his practice to manage New England rockers the Bram Rigg Set and the Shags (not to be confused with the infamous Wiggin sisters), and when Syncron Sound (where both bands had recorded) fell on hard times, he bought the studio, changed the name, and turned it into a profitable business that's still running today.

Don't Press Your Luck! collects material from a handful of New England acts who recorded at Trod Nossel and were overseen by Cavalier, and there's little arguing that the folks at the studio knew their stuff -- compared to many compilations of '60s garage rarities, these tracks sound lively and robust, crackling with teenage energy but recorded with a skill that didn't blunt the enthusiasm of the musicians. (Bob Irwin's superb remastering is also to be commended.) And the music is pretty great, too -- the Wildweeds' classic No Good to Cry (featuring a pre-NRBQ Al Anderson) is the standout here, but there's also some moody beat stuff from the Shags (Don't Press Your Luck, Hide Away), fuzztone-powered angst from the Bram Rigg Set (Sleepless Nights, You Don't Love Me, and a potent cover of Them's I Can Only Give You Everything), and intriguing weirdness from the misanthropic Fourth Ryke (Please Leave, You're Cutting Out).

While you'd expect high goofiness from a group called Uranus and the Five Moons, their material is actually smart and adventurous (Nothing Remains, SSS Happenin' Here). Some radio spots recorded at Trod Nossel also make the cut, as does a demonstration of the wonders of multi-track recorded based around a session by the Shags. Garage fanatics and folks with a taste for Connecticut history will both find this set to be well worth investigating.

The Beach Boy's Holland, the group's 19th studio album, was recorded in Baambrugge, Netherlands in the summer of 1972 and released in January 1973. Our Analogue Productions reissue also includes a bonus 12-inch EP: Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale). Plus the restoration of We Got Love, eliminated from original U.S. copies of the album!

By mid-1972, with Wilson's focus waning from the Beach Boys to other creative outlets, and his personal and health-related issues mounting, Wilson was producing less music for the band than ever before. They decamped for the Netherlands hoping to jump-start Brian's creative energies.

Wilson contributed little to the album, concentrating his musical efforts on Mount Vernon and Fairway, a 10-minute long musical fairy tale eventually included with the album as a bonus EP.

The title of the bonus EP was named after the intersection where the Love family lived in Los Angeles, and where the Wilsons and Loves would gather for family celebrations back in the 1940s and '50s when Brian, Mike, Carl and Dennis were all growing up. As a concept for a Beach Boys track, Mount Vernon and Fairway initially received a less than enthusiastic response from the other band members when Brian first presented the idea to the group, and this only fueled Brian's steadily worsening depression. Eventually, Carl stepped in to produce the recording for Brian, and the decision was made to include the fairy tale in the album package as a separate EP. Brian himself designed the EP's picture sleeve.

Although Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) was narrated by Jack Rieley, the voice of the Pied Piper was supplied by Brian in a slightly grainier-sounding cartoon voice.

The instrumental tracks for Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) were later released on Good Vibrations: Thirty years of The Beach Boys as Fairy Tale Music.

Upon the band's return from the Netherlands in the fall, Holland was rejected by Reprise Records for not having a potential hit single. Added to the track list was an unfinished Brian Wilson song Sail On, Sailor, that he'd originally co-written with Ray Kennedy, and finally completed with the help of Van Dyke Parks, Jack Reiley and Tandyn Almer. It would ultimately become Holland's most famous track. A casualty of the album's tracklist reshuffling was another Fataar/Chaplin tune, written with Mike Love, called We Got Love. A live version was included on the group's 1973 release The Beach Boys In Concert.

Early test pressings of Holland, made in the U.S. and U.K. featured We Got Love, as did a few hundred copies pressed and sold in Germany. Early French and Canadian pressings of Holland mention We Got Love on the jacket, but the song is not on those albums. For this Holland reissue Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions has brought back We Got Love as a bonus track!

The highlights (of Holland are) Carl's 'The Trader,' Brian's 'Sail on, Sailor' and 'Funky Pretty' ... Al Jardine and Mike Love's three-part 'California Saga' shows the effects of their environmentalist spirituality ...(the conclusion, 'California,' is a solid return to the harmony-laden sun-and-surf '60s). 'Only with You' is yet another tender Dennis Wilson ballad, (a rare songwriting collaboration with Mike Love), given an excellent reading by Carl. - AllMusic.com

    BBC The Radiophonic Workshop

    180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Remastered

Available On Vinyl For The 1st Time

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, set up in 1958, was originally created as a sound effects unit for BBC Radio and TV programs. Pioneering new forms of drama during the late 1950s and early 60s demanded innovative and original use ofmusic and sound. The art of what became known as sounddesign began in the cramped undergroundstudiosof the Radiophonic Workshop at the BBC Maida Vale complex in London. Their early explorations into sound drew on the principles of musique concrete, early tape manipulation techniques and primitive oscillators and tone circuits built by technicians at the workshop. As technology developed and the synthesizer, tape technology, computers and early digital sampling emerged the Radiophonic Workshop maintained an their position at the leading edge of electronic music and sound design.

The vast body of work that emerged between 1960 and 1997 has influenced generations of musicians both within electronica and more widely in the Rock, Progressive and Pop field. Groundbreaking work such as Delia' Darbyshire's 1963 Doctor Who Theme (still the high water mark of experimental music), sound effects albums, works of early electronica and popular favourites such as Blake's 7 and The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy have ensured the RWS a place at electronica's top table. From the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Vangelis to Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and beyond, their legacy lives on in the sounds and textures of so much contemporary music. But it isn't just musicians who have drawn on their work.

The technical development of the studio and modern recording techniques owes them a great debt too. Sound engineer Roger Mayer, who supplied effects pedals to Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, is just one of many engineers for whom their work proved inspirational. He described the Workshop as, ''the great unsung heroes of British electronica.''

These two records, recorded in 1968 and 1975 respectively, were released at the height of The Radiophonic Workshop's influence. They showcase the dawning of processed sound, treated sounds and sound design.

Quirky and irreverent BBC Radiophonic Music was originally put out as a specialist demonstration library disc for BBC drama producers. In 1971 the BBC released it commercially. This is the first time it has been made available on vinyl in its first and original form.

The Radiophonic Workshop from 1975 was a compilation of the best-known of the Radiophonic Workshop's output to date. This is the first time it has seen a vinyl reissue in its original form.

Both albums have been remastered for vinyl from the original tapes by the Radiophonic Workshop's archivist Mark Ayres. Pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

We're Gonna Change The World - The 60's Chicago Garage Sound Of Quill Records

Chicago was a great place to be if you were a member of a rock & roll combo in the mid-'60s -- there were plenty of teen clubs, radio stations were happy to play local product, and several Windy City labels were ready and willing to take hometown acts into the studio and get their music into stores. Dunwich Records and USA Records were the biggest labels in Chicago and both scored a handful of national hits, but they were far from the only game in town, and Peter Wright, a successful record promo man who went on to manage the New Colony Six, ran one of the city's most interesting small labels, Quill Records, which released top-notch sides on a number of fine groups and licensed a few of his masters to larger labels out of town.

While Quill only lasted a bit less than two years (from 1966 to 1967), their output was impressive stuff from an eclectic variety of acts, and the great reissue label Sundazed, only a few months after releasing a definitive two-disc overview of the USA Records catalog (2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage and Psychedelia from U.S.A. and Destination Records), have unearthed 19 highlights from Quill's archives on We're Gonna Change the World! The 60's Chicago Garage Sound of Quill Productions.

Many of Quill's acts followed the trends of the major British acts of the day, but hardly all of them; the Exterminators deliver a screed against long hair and take an America first position on rock with the over the top Declaration of Independence '65, Hot Pastrami by the Don Caron Orchestra is a high-powered instrumental dominated by honking saxophones and fuzzy guitars, and I'm Going to Change the World by the Commons Ltd. suggests the psychedelic revolution that was lurking around the corner while still maintaining a high degree of sneer and swagger.

And even the acts that were looking to the U.K. for inspiration were turning their eyes to unusual places; the Delights were clearly obsessed with the Zombies, so much so that their original tune Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Moment mimics their style just as well as their cover of Just Out of Reach, and the Skunks, who true to their name bleached stripes into their hair, also leaned to the moody side of British pop with Don't Ask Why and a fine cover of the Beatles' It's Only Love (though Do the Duck is a raw and fuzzy celebration of some would-be dance craze).

    2. Do The Duck - The Skunks
    3. Yes I Know - The Prophets
    4. I'll Have You Cryin' - Chances R

Saravah Soul Cultura Impura On 2 x Vinyl LP + CD

Cultura Impura is the second album from the half Brazilian, half British, London based purveyors of Afro-meets-Brazilian funk, Saravah Soul. This vibrant record sees the band channelling '60s Brazil via 21st Century East London. Cultura Impura is built on digging: hunting through old West African recordings from the 60s and 70s, sifting through Brazilian folklore and delving into Afro-Brazilian religious music, along with a deep love for 60s funk and Afro-beat. And lots of gigging: constantly touring their intensely vibrant live show, from festival to festival and across continents.

    Happy Sad

One of the best albums of the late 60s and Tim Buckley's most underrated album, Happy Sad was a change-up pitch for the eclectic L.A. singer/songwriter. Sounding like a bit like Fred Neil's Capitol-era albums, Buckley and his small, acoustic-based ensemble create beautiful, jazz tinged folk-rock.

The follow-up to their debut Noumena. Though the music on this release is familiar, there's a depth to both the performance and production that feels new. The direct-to-analog tape mix is used as another instrument to help shape each song, channeling the mythos of late 60s jazz and late 70s dub classics. They've also expanded their influences with shades of afro-beat and disco-soul.

    Orange Sunshine Soundtrack

Orange Sunshine was one of the most anticipated films at the SXSW festival this year. The film is the never-before-told story of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love - a spiritual group of surfers and hippies in California, which became the largest supplier of LSD during the 60s and 70s. The soundtrack features music in the style of the era, composed by singer-songwriter Matt Costa.

    Bookends

Ranked 233/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Simon and Garfunkel's classic album Bookends, released in 1968, marked the duo's emergence as both a brilliant creative force and one of their era's biggest-selling recording acts.

Bookends, which arrived on the heels of Simon and Garfunkel's high-profile role on the soundtrack of the film The Graduate, is a brilliantly realized tour de force that captures the pleasures, tensions and fears of its era as vividly as any '60s album. Simon's literate, emotionally complex songwriting is matched by the ambitious production, which elevates the fiery folk-rockers A Hazy Shade of Winter and Save the Life of My Child, the cinematic flights America and Fakin' It, the intimate ballads Old Friends and Bookends Theme, and the deceptively whimsical Mrs. Robinson and At the Zoo.

Sundazeds exact vinyl replica of this harmony-rich classic is sourced from the original stereo master tapes, making this release an essential component of any 60s pop/rock collection.

    Ultraviolet

On Ultraviolet, Sadistik closes his eyes tight and reaches out towards the peripheries of perception through introspection and psychedelic escapism, transcribing the vivid images crawling on the dark purple walls of his Seattle studio. The day after he finished recording 2013's critically acclaimed Flowers For My Father, Sadistik (nÉe Cody Foster) began writing the new record with a head full of acid, left field 60s & 70s cinema and palpable frustration with the world around him.

The return of a classic, complete with original artwork and new photos. Written by The Sherman Brothers with a cast which included Dick Van Dyke, the famous songwriters put it thusly when asked about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; 'Mary Poppins' was the most successful thing we ever did, (it earned them a fortune and two Oscars). This is better. We're much more pleased with our music for Chitty.' A must have for fans of 60s era musicals.

    Broken Record Prayer (Awaiting Repress)

Comet Gain is a beloved British indie rock band, formed in 1993. Over five full-lengths and twenty or so 7-inches, their music has evolved into a culmination of sounds that range from Northern soul, the riot grrrl movement, and 60s girl groups. They're often considered contemporaries to the likes of Huggy Bear, The Clean, Bikini Kill, Heavenly, Television Personalities, and The Pastels, and they've been cited as a major influence on the rising jangly underground featuring Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Crystal Stilts, and caUSE co-MOTION! This release is a collection of Comet Gain's lost, hidden, and cherished singles, unreleased songs, and their historic John Peel session.
