Spherical 65um Diamond, true mono, for 78s

The 2M 78 Series - the true MONO from Ortofon!

2M are designed for precise and accurate retrieval of the information in the record groove. Our philosophy is to play the record sound as accurate as possible, without coloring the sound. We have optimized the design for ease of mounting the cartridge, weight and size to fit the most common turntables at the market today.

The name 2M was selected among several ideas. We wanted a modern name that would be easy to pronounce and to remember, and therefore an alpha numerical name was chosen. 2M means MM, which is the abbreviation for moving magnet.

Of course the 2M isn't just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with the unrelenting commitment of Ortofon to provide the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration.

The 2M series of cartridges feature Ortofon's trademark split pole pins, an invention that enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response, as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon, and were originally presented in the 500 series and Super OM series.

    The 2M 78 features a 65um diamond for playback of 78rpm records, and a true-mono engine.

    Easy Skanking In Boston '78

Easy Skanking is a definite reminder of exactly what made Bob Marley and The Wailers so popular, and with music fans that perhaps didn't own any other reggae LPs. Recorded at the very peak of their abilities, Bob & The Wailers turn in a performance that's as resonantly powerful today as it must have been 37 years ago. - Jon Gordon (Adequacy.net)

Turn Me Loose: Outsiders Of Old Time Music

Frank Fairfield curates another reissue of 78 RPM records - this time with the help of a few of his collector friends. The collection focuses on some of the most seldom acknowledged varieties of Anglo-American vernacular. You'll hear unusual, uncommon instrumentation and great fiddlers from California to Ohio, New Mexico to West Virginia. Forget Americana, this collection shows Anglo-American down-home music as it actually was and in many cases (although largely unrecognized) still is. Rust Never Sleeps

Never one to follow protocol, Neil's 1979 album featured new songs recorded live during his '78 tour with Crazy Horse. The now legendary record (with a title inspired by Devo and a sound invigorated by the punk movement), was originally split into separate acoustic and electric sides, and possibly best exemplifies two very different sides of Young. Includes Thrasher; Powderfinger; Hey Hey, My My (into the Black) , and more.

Jack White presents his new album Lazaretto, released on Third Man Records/Columbia. Lazaretto inhabits an exciting place in White's expansive discography as the follow-up to 2012's gold-certified international #1 Blunderbuss, and was preceded by first single and title track ''Lazaretto.''

The aforementioned Blunderbuss was the first U.S. #1 album of Jack's storied career, also debuting at #1 in the UK, Canada, and, naturally, Switzerland. Blunderbuss was supported by an ambitious world tour featuring two backing bands, the all-male Buzzards and all-female Peacocks, notched up five GRAMMY nominations including Album of the Year, and dominated Best of 2012 lists, including being named MOJO's #1 album of 2012.

    Live Rust

Mere months passed between the release of Neil Young's mid-career milestone Rust Never Sleeps and this 1979 tour recording, which documents a late-'78 San Francisco performance. Indeed, Live Rust boasts four songs from the album that gave it its name. It's also sequenced in the same spirit as its studio sibling. As with Rust Never Sleeps, Live Rust opens with steady-flowing acoustic numbers before swirling into an electric vortex. What was side 4 off the original two-record version--Like a Hurricane, Hey, Hey, My, My, and Tonight's the Night--is arguably Young and Crazy Horse at their peak as a live unit, with all due respect to 1991's estimable Weld and 1997's desultory Year of the Horse. Few rock bands rank with Young and his stalwart electric trio, and Live Rust presents them in all their raging glory. -Steven Stolder

    Rumor and Sigh (Awaiting Repress)

The Most Cohesive and Accessible Album of Richard Thompson's Career: Brilliantly Diverse, Savagely Witty Rumor and Sigh Includes All TIME 100 Song 1952 Vincent Black Lightning

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes, Pressed at RTI, and Strictly Limited to 3000 Numbered Copies: Rumor and Sigh on 180g Vinyl 2LP for the First Time, Features Dynamic Production

Richard Thompson manages all of his usual superhuman feats on Rumor and Sigh. Rippled, vibrant guitar lines that sound like they're coming from four guitars? Check. Lyrics that expose the delicate quirks of human behavior in witty, truthful manners? Here. Engaging vocals that arrive as if they are sung only to you, the words doubling as whispered thoughts in your own head? Yep. But Rumor and Sigh goes further by featuring astute, lively production and well-planned arrangements that turn the 1991 album into one of the - if not the - most cohesive and accessible efforts of Thompson's storied career. And now, courtesy of Mobile Fidelity, it's his best-sounding record.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, and on 180g vinyl 2LP for the first time ever to provide needed groove space, Mobile Fidelity's analog edition breathes with an effervescent openness that makes the music emerge with a livelier sheen, standout dynamics, and unstoppable energy. The dead-quiet pressing makes it immediately evident Rumor and Sigh endures as a very special album - a cohesive, varied, and fun set spiked with some of Thompson's finest compositions and an exoticism that extends to the modest use of the hurdy-gurdy, mandolin, concertina, and crumhorn.

Casual fans will likely even recognize the Mitchell Froom-produced release includes the incomparable 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, a motorcycle-based tale of desire, love, and death rightly recognized by TIME magazine as one of its All TIME 100 songs. It, and the other 13 tracks, takes on newfound radiance that showcases the brilliant range of Thompson's instrumentation and tone. You could plug in a guitar amplifier right next to you, connect a Fender, and strum. Yet you still wouldn't have the depth, intimacy, and detail afforded by this audiophile edition. It's that remarkable.

So is the diversity of the album's sonic signatures and themes. Opener Read About Love provides an electric-start jolt, its upbeat tempos, shimmering accents, and massive hooks framing Thompson's amusing story of an inexperienced introvert that applies pop-culture ideas of romance to the real thing. The master wordsmith finds similar ironies in the mischievous intent of I Feel So Good, a Celtic-flavored tune whose uplifting emotions contrast with the character's out-of-control desires. Humor further wriggles in the jaunty Psycho Street and spirited Don't Sit on My Jimmy Shands, an enduring tribute to the Scottish accordionist and the pursuit of collecting rare 78 records.

The singer-songwriter's knack for accentuating biting contrast - and for delving into darker regions where jealousy, bitterness, and self-deprecation reside - pervades Rumor and Sigh in the same manner his band shades his every move with narrative skill. Just listen to the faint keyboard cues on I Misunderstood or Jim Keltner's crisp, hi-hat cracks on You Dream Too Much. Of course, everyone stands aside for the folk-leaning 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, a solo tour de force of musicianship and lyricism that confirms Rumor and Sigh survives not only as one of the finest records of the 1990s - but one of the best platters of the last three decades.

Merritone Rock Steady 2: This Music Got Soul 1966-1967 (Awaiting Repress)

American rhythm & blues fervor, boosted by a multitude of sound systems playing 78rpm records on increasingly larger sets, gripped Jamaica from the late forties onwards but, towards the end of the decade, the American audience began to move towards a somewhat softer sound. The driving rhythm & blues discs became increasingly hard to find and the more progressive Jamaican sound system operators, realizing that they now needed to make their own music, turned to Kingston's jazz and big band musicians to record one-off custom cut discs. These were not initially intended for commercial release but designed solely for sound system play on acetate or 'dub plates' as they would later be termed. These 'specials' soon began to eclipse the popularity of American rhythm & blues and the demand for their locally produced music proved so great that the sound system operators began to release their music commercially on vinyl and became record producers. Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, Duke Reid 'The Trojan' and Prince Buster, who operated his Voice Of The People Sound System, were among the first to establish themselves in this new role and the nascent Jamaican recording industry now went into overdrive.

In 1954 Ken Khouri had numbered among the first far-sighted entrepreneurs to produce mento records with local musicians (mento is Jamaica's original indigenous music) before progressing to opening Jamaica's first record manufacturing plant. Three years later he moved his operation to Foreshore Road (later renamed Marcus Garvey Drive) where, with the assistance of the inestimable Graeme Goodall, he updated and upgraded his recording studio. The importance of this enterprising move was critical to the development of Jamaican music and its influence both profound and far-reaching.

"It was Ken Khouri's Federal Recording Studio, the womb that gave birth to the talented writers, artists and musicians that gave Jamaica its musical identity." Prince Buster

Federal Records was not only the place for the sound system men to record their music but it was also where they had their records manufactured and, consequently, the company enjoyed a near-total monopoly on recording and record pressing in Kingston. In 1963 Ken Khouri sold his one track board to Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, who established Studio One, and Ken imported the first stereo equipment to Jamaica and Federal began making stereo records. The following year WIRL (West Indies Records Limited) opened but the competition served to drive the company on to higher heights. Ken Khouri continued to work on his own productions and, in 1966, the seven-inch release of Hopeton Lewis' 'Take It Easy', recorded under the guidance of Trinidadian guitarist Lynn Taitt, ushered in the rock steady era.

These two essential albums showcase a stunning selection of well-known hits, and not so well-known rarities, from the vast Federal catalog. All tracks have been transferred direct from the master tapes and assembled with the invaluable assistance of Ken Khouri's son, Paul Khouri, who generously gave Dub Store unlimited access to the Federal tape vaults. The extensive liner notes feature extracts from extensive interviews with Paul Khouri whose knowledgeable recollections of working on Marcus Garvey Drive, not only as a producer but as an engineer and musician, are illuminating and educational. Both sets present an insight into the birth and growth of Federal Records and the Jamaican recording industry and are essential to an understanding of the real roots of reggae music.

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Presentation Of His Groundbreaking, Earth Shattering, Iconic 1963 Masterpiece

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso From The Original ATCO Records Tapes

John Lee Hooker was absolutely one of the most prolific and rhythmic pioneers of the blues scene for most of his life. Recording his first 78's in the forties and rapidly becoming one of the most in demand bluesmen of his time, Hooker was truly an American legend of our modern times.

With hundreds of songs and an untold amount of recordings and live performances throughout his
lifetime, John Lee Hooker was also one of the most revered and interpreted songwriters. Major recording acts like Canned Heat, Johnny Winter, Van Morrison, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Thorogood were all champions of this sorely missed icon.

Fifty years ago, ATCO Records released one of the most important albums of his career with Don't Turn Me From Your Door - John Lee Hooker Sings His Blues. The dozen gems that make up this rural blues event would go on to become some of his most famous tunes including the title track which was covered by numerous rock and blues artists over the years like Savoy Brown and the terrific blues wailing of Drifting Blues, the rockin' Real Real Gone and of course another brilliant standard with My Baby Don't Love Me.

The award winning giant of the blues continues with even more hard rockin' blues like Guitar Lovin' Man,
Wobbling Baby and his fan favorite Stuttering Blues.

Friday Music is no stranger to the artistry of the late great John Lee Hooker, and it is with much honor to announce the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl 50th Anniversary release of his masterpiece Don't Turn Me From Your Door.

Impeccably mastered by Joe "Bluesman" Reagoso (John Lee Hooker/Canned Heat/Johnny Winter) from
the original ATCO Records tapes, John Lee Hooker's classic Don't Turn Me From Your Door will truly be one of the most anticipated blues releases of the year.

To make your limited edition listening experience all the more entertaining, we are also including the very rare album cover graphics for the first time in fifty years, which will truly enhance the wonderful blues within by the legendary John Lee Hooker.

    The Diet

Diets? Who needs 'em? Well, if you're like Buddy Hackett, or us you do. A few years ago, I came across a 45-second monologue about trying to lose weight, performed by the comedian Buddy Hackett. It was on a 78 RPM record on the Coral Records imprint. It occurred to me that it could make an interesting dance recording given the right situation and circumstance. Equally inspirational was the book Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture 1970-1979 by Tim Lawrence. In reading it, I saw parallels between the dance culture of that era and the indie-rock/punk/experimental music culture. It unlocked in my mind a genre of music long dormant in memory yet an influence so prevailing in a variety of current musical genres. Woe be it unto the man whose tastes are frozen forever, for given time, space, and understanding, such things become reborn and reimagined as we search for a creative kernel of truth. I went about the realization of this idea with fellow Lambchops and electronic-minded musicians Ryan Norris (Coupler) and Scott Martin (Hobbledeions). Together we became HeCTA.

Using the idea of combining the notion of "song" and elements from stand-up comedy, and electronic music and a shared love of the electronic form and its many permutations, we respectfully, playfully explored and experimented. It was to be an equal sharing of ideas, influences, and missteps. We were looking for a new way of making songs incorporating these things, to make something concise on beat. The form is not such a surprise when you consider other electronic collaborations I've been involved with: Zero 7's remix of Lambchop's "Up With People" and co-writing X-Press2's "Give It." The results became The Diet, and those songs are with us now. As HeCTA, we take our approach seriously and are respectfully aware of the great electronic music created throughout its history continuing into the present-so much so that when it came time to mix these recordings, we reached out to some of the central figures of the genre. Such greats as Morgan Geist, John McEntire, and Q all had a hand in shaping the refined sound we present to you. With invaluable creativity and engineering by Jeremy Ferguson at Battle Tapes in Nashville, we together created what we consider to be a collection of songs that move and move through you, from the dashboard to the dance floor, from Decatur to Dornburg, from Dorchester to Detroit. Suck it up, hippies. This music is our attempt to extend the boundaries of our expression and have some fun. It's not Americana, house, techno, trap, juke, or blaze. Why would it be? And like any good diet, it will be reviled then ultimately loved by all who give it a chance to work its way into their lives. We love you for trying, and we're trying to love you back. -kurtx

Queen Of The Flat Top Guitar

This is a collection of impossibly rare recordings from legendary finger-picker Lena Hughes. A musical amateur that best exemplified true artistry, Lena Hughes was born in Grape Grove Township, Missouri, in 1904. Though she never recorded any 78s and only one LP, Hughes was most influential through her steady performances at various fiddler conventions and folk festivals throughout the Ozarks. She was an excellent fiddler, banjoist and guitar picker who retained the largely extinct repertoire of parlor pieces and the variety of specialized tunings that were necessary to play them.

Lena Hughes' repertoire can be devided roughly in half: finger-picked numbers adapted from fiddle tunes and recast parlor guitar pieces gleaned from popular sentimental songs, hymns and 19th century airs. As a faithful attendee at folk festivals, Hughes was accompanied by her guitar-playing husband, Jake. Her most mesmerizing performances, such as Pearly Dew, Spanish Fandango and Kentucky Moon Waltz depend heavily upon resonance of the open chord as it relates to the picking of the melodic line, primarily on one string. This ethereal harmonic technique, which seems so natural in Hughes' playing, is the holy grail for most finger-picking guitarists. Her lack of pretense and her mastery of this repertoire are what define her legendary status.
