OK Computer Quick View
xRadioheadOK Computer
Ranked 162/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Granted classic album status almost immediately upon its release in 1997, OK Computer transformed Radiohead from a highly promising rock act into The Most Important Band in the World, a label the band has been burdened by ever since. Combining elements of bombastic prog rock with alternating time signatures and traditional pop songwriting, OK Computer was an artistic departure from the sound of the band's previous efforts and it was the first true sign of the band's restless ambition.1. Sweet Bird of Youth Quick View
xThe Rock*A*TeensSweet Bird of Youth
An epic collection of garagey, fuzzed-out, indie rock tunes. There are a lot of strange, grandiose pop songs on here, featuring plenty of reverbed and bombastic distorted guitar, some of it even sounding like Bob Mould's Flying V on a couple of tracks. The songs are very layered, with several different things going on over the course of the song. It's quite an achievement that only four bandmembers were able to pull this off. An analog keyboard at one also brought into play, and the interesting aspect is the layers of distortion that blanket the sound it generates, resulting in an almost orchestral feel to the songs it presides over. With this Rock*A*Teens record, Merge Records has yet another great album to feature on its already magnificent roster.

The Darkening Plain Quick View
xTransmaniaconThe Darkening Plain
Transmaniacon take the blueprint and soundworld laid down by Bloodrock, Mountain, Steppen-wolf, Blue Oyster Cult and Alice Cooper, and add a hefty slab of dark doom, hard riffs, punk atti-tude and stoner metal to ramp it up for the 21st century. The vibe is steeped in 70's rock, but the sound is definitely 'NOW' From the Sabbathian sludge of 'City Of Chaos' to the Dead Kennedy-esque 'An Eye For An Eye' and the stoner moves of 'Chasing The Insane' the album is shot through with twists and chock full of riffs. This is hard rock at its hardest and heaviest set against an expansive post apocalyptic backdrop. Nothing encapsulates the cinematic darkness more than the album opener, which grafts a progressive approach to hard rock and doom. 'Quintessence of Dust' is a 24 minute monolithic mindfuck of epic proportions, the now completed score to the still-born science fiction horror story possibly. An intense listen that features the spoken word talents of punk poet Lydia Lunch. 'Quintessence Of Dust' is a grim eco warning, a tale of alien invasion and payback time for a future Earth's corpulent consumer-ism, rampant waste and self centred greed. A hideous flesh and metal robot army, hybrid humans inadvertently created by man himself, invade, take over and consume the Earth Sleeve is by one of the real legends of horror, sci-fi and fantasy illustration, Ian Miller.1. Last year, for the first time since 1980, guitarist Pat Metheny recorded with a band that highlighted tenor saxophone. Unity Band, which went on to win Metheny his 20th Grammy Award, featured Chris Potter on sax and bass clarinet, longtime collaborator Antonio Sanchez on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Now, Metheny has added another musician, multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi, and christened the ensemble Pat Metheny Unity Group. The Group's first record, Kin (<-->), will be released in 2014 on Nonesuch.
Metheny says of this new Group, The core quartet of Chris, Ben, Antonio, and me played more than 100 concerts over the year that followed the release of our Unity Band record. Over the course of that period, the band became one of those rare combinations of players where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; it gelled in every way, and that just seemed to beg for expansion and further research. He continues, Simultaneously, I had been itching to write using more of a lush and orchestrated kind of concept that went beyond the sonic limits of what a straight-ahead quartet might invoke. But I really didn't want to lose the energy, focus, and intensity of what this band had developed. I wanted to take it further. If the first Unity Band record was a thoughtful, black and white documentary of four musicians in a recording studio playing, this record is more like the Technicolor, IMAX version of what a band like this could be-but with that hardcore thing still sitting right in the middle of it all.
Musicians:
Pat Metheny (electric and acoustic guitars, guitar synth, electronics, orchestrionics, synths)
Chris Potter (tenor sax, bass clarinet, soprano sax, clarinet, alto flute, bass flute)
