Back In BlackRanked 73/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Back in Black is the seventh Australian and sixth internationally released studio album by the band.
Released on 25 July 1980, Back in Black was the first AC/DC album recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who died on 19 February 1980 at the age of 33, and was dedicated to him. The band considered disbanding following Scott's death, but they ultimately decided to continue, with encouragement from Scott's parents, and shortly thereafter hired Brian Johnson as their new lead singer and lyricist. Producer Robert John Mutt Lange, who had previously worked with AC/DC on Highway to Hell, was again brought in to produce. The album was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and Electric Lady Studios in New York, where the album was also mixed.Back In Black

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt CheapThere's a real sense of menace to Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, the title song of AC/DC's third album. More than most of their songs to date, it captured the seething malevolence of Bon Scott, the sense that he reveled in doing bad things, encouraged by the maniacal riffs of Angus and Malcolm Young who provided him with their most brutish rock & roll yet. But for as glorious as the title track was, the entire album served as a call to arms from a group that wanted nothing more than to celebrate the dirtiest, nastiest instincts humans could have, right down to the insurgent anti-authority vibe that runs throughout the record. Take Big Balls -- sure, it's a dirty joke, but it's a dirty joke with class overthrow in mind. There's a sense on Dirty Deeds that AC/DC is storming the gates -- they're problem children sick of waiting around to be a millionaire, so they're gonna make their own money, even if they take down others as they go. That's what gives Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap its supercharged, nervy pulse; there's a real sense of danger to this record, something that can't be hidden beneath the jokes. Maybe that's why the album wasn't released in the U.S. until 1981, after Bon's death, after AC/DC had become millionaires -- if it arrived any earlier, it would have been too insurrectionist for the common good.

LiveDespite the fact that the band's best days were obviously behind them, a live album for AC/DC was all but completely necessary. After all, the group's first live release, If You Want Blood You've Got It, was recorded at a time when AC/DC was nothing more than a cult act that had yet to produce many of its future rock staples. Though recorded well into their career on the Razor's Edge 1991 tour, AC/DC Live surprisingly captures the hype and excitement that made AC/DC such a hit in their heyday. The set list wisely overlooks the songs from the band's mid-'80s slump and concentrates on hard rock hits such as 'Hells Bells,' 'Back in Black,' 'Highway to Hell,' and 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.' Brian Johnson's voice may not be as strong as in the early '80s, but he still sounds competent in his role. All too often, a live album is a cheaply made, rushed recording that only serves as a testament to a band's decline. AC/DC Live, however, shows what makes this band different from their peers here they are still entirely capable of pulling off a great live show. This ranks among the best live metal albums of the '90s. [In February 2003, the American distribution rights to AC/DC's back catalog transferred over to Epic, their new label. Epic reissued the band's catalog as remastered digipacks containing lavish, expanded booklets with plenty of rare photographs, memorabilia, and notes. Although the digipacks may wear a little too easy, the sound is terrific clean and muscular, enhancing the raw qualities of the original record and the packaging is loving, making the reissues necessary for collectors.1. Of all the bands in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, Samson takes the woulda/coulda/shoulda been big stars prize.
The band's talent and theatricality were undeniable; guitarist and singer Paul Samson had replaced Bernie TormÉ (of Gillan fame) in the band Scrapyard before founding Samson, which soon enlisted the lead vocal talents of a certain Bruce Bruce a.k.a. Bruce Dickinson, soon to be of Iron Maiden. Throw in bassist Chris Aylmer and drummer Thunderstick, who performed inside a metal cage wearing a gimp style mask, and this was an outfit seemingly destined for big things.
But, constant promotional gaffes (e.g. booking them on tour with an ill-matched Robin Trower) led the band to terminate their contract with management, who promptly brought an injunction keeping them off the road. Then, their label(Gem) went bankrupt; as Dickinson says, they made every mistake in the business.
In the midst of all the turmoil, though, the band made its third and finest record, Shock Tactics, which was ably produced by AC/DC producer Tony Platt; but, as Iron Maiden was recording next door at Battery Studios in London, the two bands became friendly, and Dickinson left Samson for Iron Maiden just as Samson received big offers from A&M and RCA, which were instantly withdrawn upon his departure. So, classic music industry saga classic British Heavy Metal!

Ten Years of Pussy (Awaiting Repress)NASHVILLE PUSSY are a band who hail from Atlanta, deep in the heart of the BBQ NATION and sound like AC/DC slap boxing with LYNYRD SKYNYRD while MOTORHEAD watches. They were formed by a husband and wife team of Blaine Cartwright and Ruyter Suys and were born out of the ashes of Blaine's former band NINE POUND HAMMER back in 1997 (In fact Blaine met Ruyter and original bassist Corey Parks at Nine Pound Hammer gigs). Since then they have played over 1,000 gigs in 40 different countries, gathered a GRAMMY nomination, and have toured with, MOTORHEAD, ZZ TOP, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, SLAYER, and a host of other heroes who became instant fans. Ruyter was even voted one of the best female rock performers ever. They have weathered numerous labels, trends and bass players. And, when counted out, have consistently pulled off resurrections that make Jesus look like a rank amateur.
The 16 studio tracks from TEN YEARS OF PUSSY are taken from the band's 3 SPV releases. The most recent, last year's UP THE DOSAGE, has been called NASHVILLE PUSSY'S BACK IN BLACK and was pick of the week on THAT METAL SHOW. FROM HELL TO TEXAS, the band's 2009 cd, was recorded at WILLIE NELSON'S studio in Texas and features the band's strongest songwriting. And GET SOME from 2005, was the first SPV release and the first collaboration with DANIEL REY, and has more hooks than a hillbilly's tackle box. Put on TEN YEARS OF PUSSY and celebrate the band's recent past and while looking forward to rocking with them in the near future.LP 1

2CellosYoung Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, together known as 2CELLOS, have achieved sensational success by taking the cello to a new level. Their playing style has broken down the boundaries between different genres of music, from classical and film music to Pop and Rock. 2CELLOS have no limits when it comes to performing live and are equally as impressive when playing Bach and Vivaldi as they are when rocking out AC/DC. Their debut album is a thrilling collection of chart-topping Rock and Pop songs performed in their signature style.
2CELLOS rose to fame in 2011 when their version of Michael Jackson's ''Smooth Criminal'' took the world by storm. The YouTube video became a massive viral sensation leading to a record deal with Sony Masterworks and an invitation to join Sir Elton John on his worldwide tour. The song charted at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Digital Songs Chart and landed the 2CELLOS' debut album in the Top 100.
In addition to many sold out solo tours (US, Japan, Europe) and collaborations with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age and George Michael, the duo have also appeared on major TV shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Bachelor and many others. Together with the Chinese classical superstar pianist Lang Lang, they appeared at the CCTV New Year's Gala for more than 1 billion viewers.1. Where The Streets Have No Name

What Happens Next (Awaiting Repress)Joe Satriani's 16th studio album is What Happens Next, a high-energy album that takes the legendary guitarist's skills to exciting new heights.
The new instrumental album features a power trio of Satriani on guitar along with two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Deep Purple/Black Country Communion bassist Glenn Hughes and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, the latter reuniting with Satriani for the first time since their work in the supergroup Chickenfoot with former Van Halen vocalist and bassist Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. This unparalleled rock rhythm section gives What Happens Next a depth of groove that sets it apart from Satriani's other work.
Satriani once again teams up with producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser on What Happens Next. Fraser has recorded and mixed every AC/DC album since 1990's The Razors Edge and has been a frequent collaborator with Satriani since the release of Crystal Planet in 1998, producing, engineering or mixing Satriani's solo albums as well as both studio projects by Chickenfoot.
This 12-track album showcases Satriani's gift for constant evolution and reinvention as a bandleader and composer of intricate guitar-driven rock. ADAD-AST-9614xDots Will Echo
Drunk Is The New Sober/Stupid Is The New DumbDrunk Is The New Sober and Stupid Is The New Dumb are the twin subtitles of Drunk & Stupid, Dots Will Echo's debut album on Asthmatic Kitty, but those aren't just arch witticisms, they encapsulate the apparent contradictions that power the New Jersey duo's music. The warmly weird world created by multi-instrumentalist Nick Berry and drummer Kurt Biroc seems simultaneously sacred and profane, edgy and accessible, sad and transcendently silly. What else would you expect from a group that describes itself as "dour moralizers and drunken assholes" and identifies its key influences as "A little bit The Incredible String Band, a little bit AC/DC?"
"I can see the carnival lights from here," sings Berry in a half-crazed, half-elated tone at the beginning of the opening track, "I Like It," sounding like either a psychotic infatuated with his own attractive fantasy world or a genius inventor marveling at the luminous landscape he's created. It's up to the listener to decide which, but either way it's 100% Dots Will Echo.
Everything on Drunk & Stupid was played by Berry and Biroc, with the basic tracks recorded in a single marathon, three-day session. "I meant this to be a very raw recording, capturing the way we sound live," says Berry, who plays everything from guitars and keyboards to Autoharp, glockenspiel, and Andean charango over the course of the album, as he and Biroc build their own beautifully ramshackle universe from the ground up before your very ears.
"A poorly played violin can sound better than a well played piano," says Berry half-jokingly of the organic, offhand feel of the tracks. From the first moment, Drunk & Stupid makes the listener a fly on the wall for a day in the life of Dots Will Echo, with snatches of goofy studio chatter interspersed between tunes. The bit that leads into the crooked campfire singalong "I'm a Monkey" is particularly telling, as Berry spontaneously announces, "I want to try a song I dreamt the other night," Biroc disapprovingly asks, "In the studio?" and Berry blithely counters, "Yeah, why not?"
In fact, Berry dreams a large percentage of his songs. "Some are stupid, but I let 'em fly anyway," he says self-deprecatingly, "but the really stupid ones, nobody's ever gonna hear." By the time they enter our waking world, Berry's tunes bear trace elements of psychedelia, power pop, field-recording folk, DIY post-punk, and tantalizingly trashy garage rock (the duo does in fact rehearse in Biroc's garage). "What You Tryin' To Do," for instance, comes off like Sister Lovers-era Big Star recording for Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, while the giddy blastoff of "Rocket Girl" evokes early XTC covered by Guided By Voices, and the fragile, almost-ominous beauty of the hushed, acoustic ballad "Gates of Eden" feels like the greatest song Neil Young never wrote for Galaxie 500.
The black humor that inhabits an impressive amount of real estate in the Dots Will Echo neighborhood isn't the whistling-through-the-graveyard variety, but rather the kind that finds all of creation to be a bit of a knee-slapper. Like the great writers in every medium, Berry finds the human dilemma a source of endless hilarity, even though you can always hear the big, gently bruised heart beating at the core of every song on Drunk & Stupid. Berry sounds like an amphetamine-fueled tour guide as he walks us through a field of mankind's folly on "Seven Deadly Sins," his loopy lyrics punctuated by Captain Beefheart-esque bursts of six-string cubism.
Even when things get apocalyptic, as on the minimalist stomp of the cautionary "Shitstorm," Berry exhibits so much obvious glee in announcing the impending arrival of the titular phenomenon that you can't help singing "there's a shitstorm coming" right along with him and bobbing your head randomly to the track's triumphantly spastic anti-groove. The deceptively mellow-sounding anthem of global dystopia "History's Grave" was written in early 2008, but Berry notes, "Since then many of the events mentioned or alluded to have come to pass. This made me feel a little bit like a character in a Stephen King novel."
At the same time, Drunk & Stupid sports songs like "Be a Friend" and "So Deep the Night," lambent, low-key ballads that balance between bittersweet and unabashedly sentimental without ever turning mawkish. On these tracks, the Lennon-like undertone in Berry's voice rises to the top of the mix, tapping into an almost spiritual vibe and making for some of the most undeniably poignant moments on the album.
Berry and Biroc, who also work together at the same day job (the drummer is Berry's boss), have been making music together since 2004, hashing out their ideas in Biroc's garage and documenting them in Berry's basement studio. Along the way, they've made unofficial micro-pressings of their work, mostly for passing around to friends and admirers in an ad hoc fashion, but Drunk & Stupid represents the first time the duo's freewheeling work has ever been properly presented to the public at large as a full-on album. With all the material the prolific pair has been stockpiling, they had a huge tally of tunes to haul along with them for this project, and hearing it is a little like stumbling for the first time into a lost world with a long legacy of its own rituals, relics, regalia, and history. But once you wander in, you can't imagine how you ever existed without it.
Originally meant to be two separate discs (the vinyl version is a double LP with download codes for bonus tracks), Drunk & Stupid is a wild ride that clocks in at just under 80 minutes and boasts 19 songs overflowing with insanely catchy melodies, endearingly off-kilter arrangements, and a strangely satisfying blend of the divine and the absurd." As Berry says, "We try to allow for the will of the universe to have a large part in our music. There must be something sacred in mistakes. This is our explanation for being fuck-ups."1. Untitled

Tyler Bryant And The ShakedownA Band On The Verge Of Rock N Roll Greatness!
After carving out a fervent fan base and drawing widespread critical applause with their heady, high-voltage brand of guitar-driven rock, shooting from both hip and heart, Nashville's Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown find themselves at the epicenter of an advanced rock 'n' roll adventure that continues to take them around the world, appearing at some of the biggest venues along the way
Starting with a guest spot on AC/DC's 'Rock or Bust' World Tour in 2016, the quartet - Caleb Crosby on drums, Noah Denney on bass and backing vocals, Graham Whitford on guitar and Texas-born Tyler himself on vocals and guitar, a musician immersed in blues music from an early age - have continued to share events and stages with some of rock's most legendary names, including Guns N' Roses, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Aerosmith, Deep Purple and ZZ Top.
At the same time as projecting their music into stadiums, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown - The Shakedown to friends and fans - have continued to build their name and reputation as a headline act, and indeed it was backstage after a sold-out, bill-topping show in London (June 2017) that the band signed their new deal with Snakefarm Records - the most immediate and exciting result being an 11-track, self-titled studio album set to be the label's inaugural release, with November 3rd locked in as the day of the launch
"So many great things have happened over the past few months," exclaims Caleb, "and it's all just so surreal. I remember seeing that Guns N' Roses were playing two stadium shows in London on June 16th and 17th earlier this year, which are birthdays for Noah and myself, back to back, and I said wouldn't it be amazing if we appeared on both of those shows and we did!"
Rewinding back to 2008, Tyler moved to Nashville by himself at the ripe age of 17 to write songs and form a band. It was here he met Caleb, and together they put together what would become The Shakedown
"The instant we started playing, I knew there was something special," reflects Caleb. "We played our first show a week later and haven't stopped since!"
The next addition to the ranks was Graham Whitford, a young guitarist from Boston, Massachusetts. Introduced to Tyler as the guy who could put him out of a job, it was clear from the start that Whitford was a force to be reckoned with. As soon as Tyler heard him play, he asked him to uproot and move to Nashville to join the band.
All that was needed now was the right bassist: enter Noah Denney, who instantly added a whole new dimension to The Shakedown's sound. As Tyler recalls, "his bass sound scared me and he brought an edge and an attitude to the band that we didn't even know we needed."
2013's 'Wild Child' album announced the quartet's arrival with a bang as they logged time on the road with the likes of Aerosmith, Jeff Beck & ZZ Top, while receiving the endorsement of Guitar World, Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, Nylon, Interview Magazine and Paste. Taking over TV, they lit up the stage at both Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! and AXS Live.
Following the release of 'The Wayside' EP (2015, produced by Grammy Award winner Vance Powell), the boys crisscrossed the country alongside Billy Gibbons & AC/DC on that celebrated 2016 run. April 2017 found them without a label and only a month out from joining Guns N' Roses on a European tour
"We had just decided to self-produce a record completely on our own," says Tyler. "I'll never forget driving home that morning and getting a call from our manager saying, 'You wanna go back to Europe with Guns N Roses?' That was a great kick-start to the first day of tracking."
So they hunkered down and set about writing & recording their second full-length album, with John Fields (Soul Asylum, Paul Westerberg) coming on board to handle the mix. Blending a sense of history with a youthful, energetic heartbeat, this anticipated outing features a host of brand new tracks, some of which have become staples of the live set. It also stands as the start of a relationship with the newly-launched Snakefarm label.
Housed within the global infrastructure of Spinefarm Records (a UMG label), the Snakefarm brand will provide a targeted home for international artists, both established and new, from the increasingly buoyant roots rock world - music based on authenticity and emotion, under-pinned by core values and beliefs.
In this respect, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown - who can lay claim to a fast-growing international presence, with major UK festivals such as Download, Ramblin' Man and British Summer Time already under their belt, alongside headline shows plus guest appearances with Nashville neighbors The Cadillac Three - are a flagship representation; what's more, in 'Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown' they've delivered a genuine genre-defying labour of love, a varied and infectious statement shot through with passion, pride and a welcome dash of glamour.
"This is the definitive Shakedown record as of now, and that's why we decided it should be self-titled," explains a fired-up Tyler. "It's the definitive Shakedown record due to the fact there were no other cooks in the kitchen. We put so much energy into writing and recording each song. It's not just a guitar album; it's a song album, and I'm proud to hang my hat on this one."
The first single / video, 'Heartland', introduces Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown with a one-two punch of gritty guitars and soulful vocals before slipping into a hypnotic bridge punctuated by airy clean guitars. Tyler sings, "There's a slow beat in the heartland, going down in the quicksand, stack 'em up and watch the cards fall, if it happens to one, then it happens to all".
"It's no secret that there's crazy stuff going on all over the world right now. There's madness all around and people are constantly picking sides. Every night when the Shakedown takes the stage, I'm amazed that music brings people together. Nobody is thinking about what side they're on when they're singing at the top of their lungs next to a complete stranger. I thought maybe through music I could remind myself and our TBSD family that when one person falls, the rest of us do, too. I wanna get together with a bunch of folks and sing that sentiment because it's one I strongly believe in.
Elsewhere, 'Backfire' struts along on a stomping drum groove driven by thick distortion with lyrics "about pulling the short end of the straw and feeling vengeful". Then there's 'Aftershock'. Hinging on hummable riffing, the track simmers at a steady swamp crawl before the Sabbathian refrain.
"That's a tune about feeling the effects of a situation long after it's come and gone.
As Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown spend 2017 lighting up stages with the likes of Guns N' Roses (again), The Who & Alice Cooper - as well as making their first appearance at Rock In Rio - this new album sees them fully realize their vision with a sound that resounds above the bleachers, plus a collective desire to keep the entertainment flag fully unfurled
"I want people to put this on and literally escape," Tyler leaves off. "I hope they feel free. That's what rock 'n' roll makes me feel. You don't have to think about your bills or any of the other things that have the power to bring you down when you've got your fist up in the air, your eyes closed and you're lost in the music. Angus Young told me, 'You've got to make the audience think you're taking them on a journey, and they'll go with you. If you believe it, they will too'. I believe it with this record."1. Heartland

We're All Alright! (Deluxe)Cheap Trick has announced the release of a new album, We're All Alright. Named in tribute to the band's 1978 hit Surrender, the album is the follow-up to last year's Bang, Zoom, Crazy... Hello, voted the 12th best album of last year by Classic Rock.
The band has also released a new song, Long Time Coming. Its riff bears more than a passing resemblance to The Kinks' classic All Day And All Of The Night, and it features the kind of keyboard motif that underpinned so many of the band's classic hits. It's our interpretation of Slade and MC5 and AC/DC and Aerosmith, Rick Nielson tells Billboard, but they're not steals. It's just, like, all the bands we like.
Y'know, we always write, but it's more fun to write for a project and write for a reason, he says. We have a company (Big Machine Records) that believes in us and they like the work and they're letting us make more records, which is cool. Making records is one of the ambitions we've always had. I don't think the desire has ever gone away.
We're All Alright was co-produced by the band Julian Raymond, and will be available in Standard and Deluxe Editions. The latter including three additional bonus tracks, among them a cover of The Move's 1968 hit Blackberry Way.

Whether it's Spinal Tap gloriously losing the plot, the escapades of Tenacious D getting them into trouble, or the phenomenon that is Dethklok tearing up the album charts, comedy and heavy music have long made for great bedfellows. Jim Breuer is a man who understands this, and with Songs From The Garage, his first full-length with longtime backing band The Regulators, he delivers both in his inimitable style. "I basically want the crowd to have a blast, and I write what I feel that I would love if I was in the crowd. So, going into the record the music had to be killer and have great hooks, that was most important, and I wanted to balance that with something that's funny," he enthuses. "I wanted to bring the smile back to hard rock that has a nice punch to it - and in doing so hopefully bridge the gap so my generation and their kids will come see this live together!"
In realizing this, Breuer has delivered a record that is pure, unadulterated fun, and yes, it rocks. From crunchy opening romp "Thrash" through the swaggering "Who Better Than Us?" to the gloriously deranged excitement suffusing "Sugar Rush", his exuberance is infectious, and he challenges you to keep your ass from shaking and the corners of your mouth twitching while it thunders from the speakers. Throughout, his influences bleed through, comfortably blurring the line between hard rock and metal while every anthemic chorus lodges irrevocably in the hippocampus. While a great many 'comedy rock' records are ultimately pretty throwaway and last as long as the joke stays funny, this is not the case with Songs From The Garage. True to his game plan, Breuer has made great songs, ones that persistently draw a smile and will fit comfortably when shuffled among the likes of Megadeth, AC/DC, Judas Priest and more contemporary bands, such as Avenged Sevenfold and Halestorm.
Having finally made the album that has been burning to get out of him since his teens, Breuer couldn't be happier with the result. Though he has fulfilled one rock and roll dream with its completion, it certainly does not mean he's about to kick back and leave it at that. "I plan on making great, funny videos for every song and have videos up during the concerts. I want pure entertainment when you come see this live, and now my rock and roll dream is to play this not only here in America, but anywhere else in the world that will accept it! I'm taking it one day at a time, living the dream."1. Thrash

The late Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined the ingredients of a great song as three chords and the truth. Every songwriter knows three chords, but laying bare the truth? Now that can be an altogether trickier affair. In January of 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock 'n' roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.
Brian Fallon was thirteen years old when he discovered The Clash's self-titled debut album in the racks of Sound Effects Records in Hackettstown, New Jersey: the owner of the store promised the young teenager that the record would change his life. He wasn't wrong. But there was a time, not so very long ago, when The Gaslight's Anthem frontman had grown weary of the sound of electric guitars. After three albums of soulful, impassioned, hearts-on-fire punk rock, Sink Or Swim (2007), The '59 Sound (2008) and American Slang (2010), Fallon needed a change of pace, a change of scenery.
And so, in January of 2011, together with TGA guitar tech Ian Perkins, he formed The Horrible Crowes, a darkly melancholic side-project inspired by his love of The Afghan Whigs, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. After the band's acclaimed debut album Elsie dropped in September, Fallon joined fellow punk rock troubadours Chuck Ragan, Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) on the acoustic Revival Tour, airing stripped-down versions of Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes songs to packed rooms across Europe. And then he returned home to New Jersey and Gaslight, re-energized, renewed and ready to make a full-tilt rock 'n' roll record again.
After six weeks of that there's nothing you want to hear more than a Marshall stack turned all the way up, he says with a laugh. The result is Handwritten, the most committed, affecting and compelling album of The Gaslight Anthem's career to date. Introduced by muscular lead-off single 45, which received it's world premiere on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World on April 30, it finds the Jersey boys in inspired form, decanting '60's soul, '70's stadium rock, '80s hardcore and '90's grunge into eleven white-knuckle, blue-collar everyman anthems. Fallon likens its incandescent electrical storms to Tom Petty songs (being) played by Pearl Jam. Put more simply, it's a supercharged American rock 'n' roll classic.
We've taken everything we do and gone to 10 with it, explains Fallon. This is definitely the Gaslight Anthem record I would want next, if I were a fan. American Slang was cool, but this sounds like a band who has plugged back into the electric socket again. I think these songs are the closest thing to what we should have always sounded like, adds guitarist Alex Rosamilia. We just hadn't figured out yet how to play it right.
Fallon credits Brendan O'Brien for capturing the raw, live-off-the-floor feel of Handwritten. Fine-tuned in the living room of the small rental house the band shared in Nashville, its eleven tracks were recorded with the whole band eyeball-to-eyeball in one room at Blackbird, vibing off one another's energy. The electricity in the recordings is tangible. Brendan taught us a ton about songwriting and recording as a band, Fallon notes. The whole experience was amazing. That's the guy that recorded Pearl Jam, that's the guy that recorded Bruce Springsteen, that's the guy that did Rage Against The Machine; and that's the guy you want to say 'It's good', because when he says it's good, that's when it's good.
The purity of O'Brien's stark, unadorned recording process served to inspire Fallon's approach to the lyrical themes on Handwritten too. Where previous Gaslight Anthem albums evoked deathless images of Americana, all Cadillacs, jukeboxes, Ferris wheels and wistful, romanticized vignettes of star-struck lovers disappearing into the great wide open, Handwritten is rooted in Fallon's own experiences, lending the record a more immediate, emotional edge. Now I am no angel but I got nothing to hide, the singer rasps on the brooding grunge-noir of Too Much Blood. Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?
It's supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening, says Fallon. Like, this is what we got beat up by and maybe you did too. There's so many things that I just never wrote about, real personal stuff that I just wasn't ready to talk about yet. Now I think being an adult I have some reflection on it. We wanted to look back on the music that we first found when we were in high school. The truth is, if you're my age, you were listening to Peal Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden. When that music came out these were guys that we could relate to. They weren't the biggest bands in the world by accident.
And it's no accident either that with Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem themselves sound built to take on the world. After years paying their dues in the punk rock underground, their major label debut is assuredly the work of a young band who know their time is now. And their laidback, charismatic frontman is ready. I've always been ready for arenas, Fallon smiles. I've just been waiting for them to catch up to me. I want to play Giant Stadium, I always wanted to be a major label, major league band. If I can be the kid that's on the cover of Time magazine, I'll take it. And I'll buy you a drink while I'm at it.1. 45

Old RamonOld Ramon, the sixth Red House Painters album, recorded in the
fall of 1997 through the spring of 1998, was intended for release
that summer. But the mega-major label merger catastrophe that
left hundreds of bands homeless spared few. Red House Painters
looked for a brief moment like survivors, but subsequent delays
eventually turned into permanent layoff. Old Ramon sat in limbo
and grew into legend as another great, lost album only the
privileged few would ever properly hear. They've unintentionally
put the wait back into the term "long-awaited."
Singer Mark Kozelek kept busy with a series of other projects. He
served as producer for Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver.
As archivist for the 4AD Red House Painters Retrospective album,
assembling rarities and live tracks. As solo artist with several
tracks on the Shanti Project album, and two albums Rock 'n' Roll
Singer and What's Next to the Moon, a collection of AC/DC songs
reinterpreted. As live performer, touring the United States, United
Kingdom, Spain, Sweden and his first ever shows in South Korea.
As film scorer for the independent film Last Ball. And, finally, as
actor in Cameron Crowe's critically acclaimed Almost Famous.
But while playing a musician in a movie-Kozelek appears as the
bassist of Stillwater in Almost Famous-was an exciting diversion,
it also pointed out the absurdity and irony of the situation. He'd
been writing and performing his own music since the 1980s, with
Red House Painters since the early 1990s. He was a musician, not
just someone who might play one on TV.
With Old Ramon sitting on the shelf, it was like reading a book
with a chapter missing. Kozelek had written most of the album
throughout 1996 and 1997. There were "Between Days" and
"Wop-a-din-din," written during the months he stayed in Oaxaca,
Mexico about his time there and his cat waiting at home in San
Francisco; "Cruiser" written on an airplane ride from Los Angeles
to San Francisco about a friend he'd met during the John Cale
tour; and "Golden," a song in tribute to John Denver, written and
recorded in a single day during December of 1997, just a few
months after Denver's tragic death. "Michigan" and "River" had
been road-tested on the band's previous tour.
The album, in fact, had come together with a good feeling, reuniting
the band with their old friend and engineer Billy Anderson,
who'd worked on their earlier records Down Colorful Hill and the
two self-titled releases (Rollercoaster and Bridge by their covers).
Sessions in San Francisco, Mendocino, California and Austin,
Texas resulted in several hours' worth of music being recorded.
The band had spread out and worked up various arrangements for
a majority of the tunes. Sadly, a twenty-minute version of "Michigan"
fell to the cutting room floor.
But the ten songs packed onto Old Ramon (the title comes from a
Spanish children's book that caught Kozelek's fancy) well
represent the band that will take to the road for the first time in
several years with extensive touring throughout the United States
and Europe. Once freed from their major label commitments,
reputable independent labels bid for the band's services. This,
however, is the album exactly as it was intended-untouched-three
years to the month of its completion. Good news:

The White Tape (Awaiting Repress)Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, Phish (aka The White Tape) was created from four-track recordings which the band and band members mixed, dubbed and circulated as a demo. It consists of an assortment of four-track recordings from 1984-1985 including four songs recorded by
all the existing members of Phish as a band: Alumni Blues, AC/DC Bag, Slave To The Traffic Light and Dog Gone Dog (a/k/a Dog Log). The
balance was recorded separately by the band members and blended together from 4-track cassettes to create the album as we know it. Trey
has said The White Tape exemplifies, perhaps more than any other studio effort, the band's unbridled creative freedom of the day. The
White Tape highlights Phish's early development with ethereal soundscapes and interesting sketches on Phish's classics-to-be such as an
acoustic The Divided Sky as it existed then and even an acapella rendering of You Enjoy Myself.
In 1998, The White Tape was re-mastered from the 2-track cassette master and sold as the first CD from the band's extensive archives.
The original art for the cassette demo was created by Trey himself and was updated for the CD and LP release by artist Jim Pollock. A snapshot

You Can't Stop MeMany of the greatest works of art throughout history were
fashioned from grief, anger and overwhelming despair descending on its creators in the aftermath of tragedy and SUICIDE SILENCE's appropriately titled You Can't Stop Me is no exception. Plenty of bands trumpet the idea of strength through adversity, but few have lived it like this one.
Like the once unthinkable creative and commercial reemergence of ALICE IN CHAINS or the classic, legendary and timeless touchstone that is AC/DC's Back in Black, Suicide Silence's fourth album features a new frontman on the heels of earthshaking tragedy. You Can't Stop Me serves as a simultaneous introduction to vocalist Hernan "Eddie" Hermida, as well as a celebration of the brotherhood the band shared with Hermida's fallen predecessor. The group chose the album's title from a collection of lyrics left behind by the late Mitch Lucker, while their formidable revamped sound makes it clear that Suicide Silence's resurrection is complete. Ever since Suicide Silence went public with their plans to continue as a band, they've put all of the emotions from the last two years into these songs. "Inherit the Crown" name checks The Black Crown, as Hermida demands the chance to honor his friend's legacy and carve out a place of his own.
Mark Heylmun and Chris Garza (guitars), Dan Kenny (bass) and Alex Lopez (drums) sound more driven than ever, force-feeding their mashup of death metal, black metal, grind and time-signature bending dissonance into structured, focused and often groove-oriented missives of anger and perseverance. Just as the surviving members of JOY DIVISION were able to remake themselves as NEW ORDER, and as a post-plane crash LYNYRD SKYNYRD was reborn with Johnny Van Zant stepping in for his late brother, You Can't Stop Me is equal parts mournful tribute and statement of renewed purpose.
Death metal legend George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (CANNIBAL CORPSE) and Greg Puciato (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, KILLER BE KILLED) make guest appearances, but make no mistake: Suicide Silence is as bonded, as cohesive, as ever. You Can't Stop Me was produced and mixed by Steve Evetts (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, GLASSJAW, SEPULTURA), the band's longtime friend and collaborator. Evetts was set to begin working with Lucker on new material just days after the singer's passing.
Most bands will declare their most recent album the "best" they've ever done. Suicide Silence have declared You Can't Stop Me as their most impassioned, most committed, and most important release thus far. It's a record they fought, bled, sweated and even cried to make happen.
If a rising heavy metal band can overcome a tragedy this triumphantly, this definitively, this absolutely, then surely there's hope for us all.1. M.A.L.
