    Breaking Silence (45 RPM)

Mastered For 45 RPM By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Analog Master Tapes!

200-Gram, 45 RPM Vinyl Pressing By Quality Record Pressings!

Tip-On Gatefold Jacket With Janis' Pure Voice And Personal Songs Spread Across Four Sides!

This album finds Janis' voice in its purest, most vital form ever. The tracks were recorded as live as possible without sounding retro. This 1992 all-analogue recording, praised as much for the artist's too infrequently heard talents as for its recorded dynamics, is now available on the medium that is a natural: 200-gram vinyl!

The audiophile LP version reflects what the two top bibles of high-end audio decree as an impeccable production that has come to be regarded as a high-fidelity reference. Matched with Ian's very personal songs, delivered in a voice that draws you in close in confidence, Breaking Silence is one of the very few recordings of recent years that by reproducing a pure analogue sound, has attained true audiophile status.

    Technical Data:

Tracks were recorded at Nightingale Studio on a Studer 820, 24-track machine, 30 IPS, non-dolby, at the elevation of +6/250 nu using Ampex 499 tape.

Included among the mics used on the recording dates were: Neumann M-49, AKG C-12, Telefunken 251, Sheffield C-9 and a custom built tube direct box on the bass. Janis' vocal was recorded using a Telefunken U-47 and a Mastering Lab mic preamp, linked with series-one Monster Cable direct to the back of the multi-track machine with no EQ or Limiting.

The album was mixed at Bill Schnee Studio to an Ampex ATR 1/2 machine, at 30 IPS, non-dolby, at the elevation of +3/250 nu on Ampex 499 tape. The reverb on the album was an EMT tube plate used along with natural room sounds captured in the recording. During the mixing of the album, Some People's Lives was recorded direct to two-track using the same vocal chain as above and Telefunken 251's on the piano. Take number two was used as the album cut. The album was mixed using Mastering Lab modified Tannoy SGM-10's powered by Sherwood-Sax mono-block tube amps.

Produced, engineered and mixed by Jeff Balding.

iFi Audio Pro iCAN Headphone Amplifier

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

iFi is proud to present its flagship Professional 'Pro' series. The first product in the range is the Pro iCAN - a studio-grade headphone amplifier AND audiophile line-stage. Inside beats 'two hearts' as there is are two individual Solid-State and Tube amplification sections - selectable on the go. There is nothing quite like the Pro iCAN; literally.

    Flagship, studio-grade headphone amplifier

The Pro iCAN will for many, be used as a top-of-the-line, headphone amplifier that drives anything and everything - from CIEMs through to the most difficult to drive headphone ever made, the AKG K-1000.

Further, Gain is adjustable from 0dB/9dB/18dB. The Pro iCAN can output >10V in Single-Ended mode and 20V in Balanced-mode. The 20V mode is equivalent 100W into a 4 Ohm speaker. So the Pro iCAN can drive almost any headphone into very hard-clipping (protection circuitry typically kicks in under such circumstances).

    and audiophile line-stage.

The Pro iCAN has at the core, a Japan Alps motorised rotary volume potentiometer. This is the '6-Track' version with 4 tracks used for a true balanced volume control. This is the litmus test for any amplifier to see if it is truly balanced, or operates internally in single-ended mode. Those using '2-Track' volume controls may offer balanced in and out, but are not true balanced designs. The Pro iCAN however is fully-balanced from beginning to end.

In terms of flexibility, 3 single-ended and 1 balanced inputs and 1 balanced and 1 single-ended output, the Pro iCAN is a full-function audiophile line-stage that is at home in many expensive hi-fi systems. Its user-selectable Solid-State/Tube amplifiers remain and so are 3D Holographic for Speakers and XBass for ultra-fidelity home audio systems.

    Way Out West (Awaiting Repress)

Mastered off the original 2-track tape recorded with a tube AKG-C12 microphone on a tube Ampex 350 machine. Features Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics.

The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: I'm hot now.

    Mastered by Doug Sax.

Way Out West is a piano-less trio - another va-va-vivid Roy DuNann production - with Rollins spinning quirky geometric patterns through odd standards like 'I'm an Old Cow Hand.' - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's Best-Sounding Jazz LPs)

    1. I'm An Old Cowhand

    2. Solitude

    3. Come, Gone

    4. Wagon Wheels

    5. There Is No Greater Love

    6. Way Out West
