    Al Green Greatest Hits

Ranked 52/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Al Green was the first great soul singer of the '70s and arguably the last great Southern soul singer. With his seductive singles for Hi Records in the early '70s, Green bridged the gap between deep soul and smooth Philadelphia soul. He incorporated elements of gospel, interjecting his performances with wild moans and wails, but his records were stylish, boasting immaculate productions that rolled along with a tight beat, sexy backing vocals, and lush strings. The distinctive Hi Records sound that the vocalist and producer Willie Mitchell developed made Al Green the most popular and influential soul singer of the early '70s. Greatest Hits epitomizes that trademark sound with 10 of the R&B legends' all-time classics.

    The Greatest

Cat Power's (aka Chan Marshall) 2006 masterpiece The Greatest (not a greatest hits album, despite the title) features 12 dreamy country soul tracks recorded in Memphis at Ardent Studios under the supervision of Stuart Sikes. The sublime set finds Marshall wonderfully supported by the great Memphis session musicians Teenie Hodges on guitar and Leroy Hodges on bass (Al Green, Hi Rhythm Section), drummer Steve Potts, Jim Spake, Hubby Michell and other legends.

The combination of Marshall's superbly evocative and flexible voice, a soul voice even back when she played with indie rockers, with some of the greatest Southern soul players still alive, has produced a timeless release on par with Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis or Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline.

The songs, all original Marshall compositions, explore themes of Southern loss, longing and marginality. From the title track, a story about a boy who longs to become a boxer but struggles against his poverty-stricken background, to tales of other marginal figures, The Greatest is all about triumphing over the odds. Bill Withers' Greatest Hits (Awaiting Repress)

Bill Withers Bill Withers' Greatest Hits on Numbered Limited Edition 180g LP from Mobile Fidelity

Bill Withers' Smooth Soul Voice, Mellow Grooves, and Gospel Accents Inform Beloved Work: Booker T. Jones, Al Jackson, and Stephen Stills Among Guest Instrumentalists on Greatest Hits

Essential Bill Withers' Greatest Hits Compilation Includes Ubiquitous Classics Such as Ain't No Sunshine, Lean on Me, Lovely Day, Use Me, and Grandma's Hands

Mobile Fidelity 180g LP Pressed at RTI: Roots R&B Has Never Sounded Better on Any Format

Bill Withers created mellow, downhome-style soul for barely more than a decade before retreating from the industry to pursue craftsman interests. Yet over the course of the handful of albums he made for Sussex and CBS, the Appalachian native struck lasting emotional chords in legends ranging from Booker T. Jones to Stephen Stills - not to mention the millions of listeners that fell under the spell of now-standard tracks such as Lean on Me, Use Me, and Ain't No Sunshine. The antithesis of the sweaty R&B shouter that prowled the edge of stages, Withers dealt in calm and vulnerability, qualities that come to fore on the seminal Bill Withers' Greatest Hits.

Pressed on 180g LP at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's vinyl reissue of the 1981 compilation provides a transparent view of Withers' relaxing timbre and the subtle grooves underlining his arrangements. Characteristics ranging from the tension of the guitars, funky bends of the bass, whisper-soft coo of the formal strings, airiness of the backing harmonies, and sharpness of the snare drum emerge with utmost clarity and lifelike presence. Always prized for its naked honesty and pure conviction, Withers' music positively caresses the senses on this LP, the unadulterated production and beautiful soundscapes revealed anew with each listen.

Incredibly, Withers almost never got a shot at recording. After receiving a deal from Sussex while laboring as a toilet-seat manufacturer, he landed in the care of Stax bandleader Booker T. Jones, who gathered most of his fellow MG members - along with Stills and Jim Keltner - to assist in Withers' debut. Two takes from those sessions, the Grammy-winning Ain't No Sunshine and devotional Grandma's Hands, are included here, and showcase the vocalist's incredible breath control, folksy drawl, and restrained phrasing. They also indicate his penchant for converting biographical experience into eminently catchy combinations of pop, gospel, blues, and soul.

Evidence of Withers' crossover appeal is found not only via his chart successes on both the pop and R&B charts, but in the DNA of his best work. There's not one forgettable moment on Greatest Hits. Covered by the likes of Fiona Apple, Mick Jagger, Isaac Hayes, Alicia Keys, and dozens more, Use Me rides a riveting clarinet riff and urban tempo to express the double-edged feelings associated with an edgy relationship. On the loping Who Is He (And What Is He to You?), Withers again splits the bitter and sweet. For the Latin-tinged Lovely Day, Withers holds a single note for 18 seconds and composed a song that's been sampled and rerecorded countless times by artists spanning Diana Ross to R. Kelly. And with Lean on Me, the West Virginian devised a masterpiece that's been for more than four decades part of the classic American songbook, an updated hymn carried to immortality by members of the Charles Wright & 103rd Street Rhythm Band.

A veritable template for British soul contemporaries like Sam Smith and an extension of the timeless fare explored by Van Morrison, Curtis Mayfield, and Al Green, Bill Withers' Greatest Hits belongs in every music lover's library.

The Best Of Sade (Awaiting Repress)

By the time this was released in 1994, something unexpected happened. Sade's early work became classic and the later additions boasted even better vocals and songs that nicely improved on the theme. The timeless sound and class always exhibited makes Sade Adu and her band a no-brainer for an appealing compilation.

Like Al Green's Greatest Hits, The Best of Sade doesn't detract from the original albums and is a marker of time, not the end of the act. The ice-princess demeanor and detached vocals worked perfectly for the mid-'80s singles and radio samples Smooth Operator and Your Love Is King. The tracks from the make-or-break second album, Promise, seem less dolorous propped up and sequenced for a compilation. The sensual-to-a-fault The Sweetest Taboo and Never As Good As the First Time both retain their strength here. This set also includes tracks from Sade's comeback CD, Love Deluxe, including Kiss of Life and No Ordinary Love.

As a bonus, The Best of Sade also includes a rare cover of Please Send Me Someone to Love from the Philadelphia soundtrack.

I'm Still In Love With You

Ranked 285/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

By the time I'm Still In Love With You was released in 1972, the Al Green/Willie Mitchell Hi Records team was a well-oiled hit-making machine. With a #1 hit under his belt with Let's Stay Together, I'm Still In Love With You put Green right back at the top of the charts with hits like Look What You Done For Me and Love And Happiness. Green also began exploring country music here with his fine interpretations of Kris Kristofferson's For the Good Times and Roy Orbison's Oh Pretty Woman.

The Best Of Booker T. And The M.G.'s

The Original Atlantic Soul Masters 180g Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues..

As a young teenager growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, Booker T. Jones had the amazing talent to play a number of instruments and he played them well. Mastering them well enough to land him work at the famous Stax Records label as a sideman, while still attending high school. It was during this time he met up with future guitar legend Steve Cropper and drummer great Al Jackson and later formed the Stax wrecking crew known as Booker T. & The M.G.s.

This amazing quartet, whom later added the amazing Donald Duck Dunn on bass went on to record a treasure trove of funk, soul and rock masterpieces, which have gone on to become some of the greatest sides ever waxed in modern soul history! With chart topping soul rockers like Green Onions, Red Beans And Rice and Hip Hug-Her, the good folks at Atlantic honored this famed quartet with their own greatest hits album, the magnificent The Best Of Booker T. & The M.G.s in 1968. This original album has been out of print for many years, and for several decades in the vinyl format...that is until now.

Friday Music is proud to offer the original Atlantic Records masterpiece The Best Of Booker T. & The M.G.s for the first time on 180g Audiophile Vinyl. Mastered impeccably from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray.

This best of album features all of their original hit recordings mentioned above, as well as more killer funk like Mo Onions, Slim Jenkins Place and Soul Dressing. Plus, super soul interpretations of The Rascals Groovin and George Gershwins Summertime.

They have also included the original rare album cover elements featuring the hip Baron Wolman/Rolling Stone photo and the excellent packaging design of Haig Adishian. This is one collection just made for the audiophile vinyl domain and will be a perfect companion to our recent Atlantic Records soul offerings from Wilson PickettThe Best Of Wilson Pickett and Solomon BurkeThe Best Of Solomon Burke.

    Voodoo (Awaiting Repress)

First Vinyl Release Since its Original Release in 2000!

With Original Artwork and New Liner Notes Featuring Interviews with ?uestlove, Pino Palladino, and More!

Ranked 488/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Voodoo hit store shelves on January 25th 2000. But the first great album of the new millennium was born in the 1990s, and its muggy grooves capture the sound of premillennial anxiety. The album is the product of perfectionism, obsession and paranoia. 1995's debut Brown Sugar had already strategically positioned D'Angelo-born Michael Eugene Archer and Virginia-raised to a Pentecostal preacher father-as the next Hendrix-like deity in black music, after Prince and maybe Lenny Kravitz.

Though inspired by the birth of his children and trips back to Virginia, Voodoo's roots are in 1960s, '70s and '80s funk and soul; a nostalgic nod to the ideas and inventions of black music trailblazers powered by avant-garde hip-hop and jazzinfluenced rhythms. D'Angleo's aim, he said, was to reclaim R&B. He wanted to be like Sly Stone, George Clinton and Al Green. And most of all, he wanted to be like Jimi Hendrix.

The concept behind Voodoo was simple. Put together a brilliant ensemble of R&B musicians bent on grooving together. Record them live, in real-time, jamming face-to-face in an effort to capture their conviviality and chemistry. For Voodoo's core rhythm trio, D'Angelo recruited his friend and colleague, The Roots' visionary drummer Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson, plus Welsh journeyman Pino Palladino to hold down the bass. It was a combination that gelled immediately.
