    Sound & Color (180 Gram)

    2xLP On 180 Gram Vinyl

Alabama Shakes announced that they will be releasing the highly anticipated follow-up to their 2012 Grammy-nominated debut. The new album is titled Sound & Color.

"We took our time to write this record, and I'm really glad we did," says Brittany Howard, lead singer and guitarist of Alabama Shakes, about the band's new album Sound & Color. "We were able to sit down and think about what's exciting to us, explore all the things we wanted to on our first album. This record is full of genre-bending songs-it's even harder now when people ask, 'What kind of band are you?' I have no clue."

The album's twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of "Shoegaze" or the garage-rock freak-out on "The Greatest" give way to the psychedelic space jam "Gemini." The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album with what Howard calls "more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going on," then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of "Don't Wanna Fight." Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard's vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus.

Sweet Home Alabama Live At Rockpalast

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the ultimate Southern Rock band. Their signature three guitar attack coupled to superb
songwriting and massive on stage charisma has rightfully earned them a reputation as one of the greatest live
bands of all time. The original band infamously had their career cut short by a disastrous plane crash in 1977 which
took the lives of three members plus two of their road crew and seriously injured several others.

In 1987 the surviving members reformed the band with Johnny Van Zant taking the place of his brother Ronnie. This concert from 1996 captures the band on top form at Rockpalast's Loreley Festival on June 23, 1996.

    The Lost Cause Ministrels

Grayson Capps' fifth studio album, The Lost Cause Minstrels, finds the Mobile, Alabama-based singer/songwriter coming of age. That doesn't mean his oft-unholy tales of the Southern Gothic have lost any of their luster. Quite the contrary, Capps' Tao-tinged philosophical musings revealed inside songs shuddering with spit, stomp and snarl are as potent as ever.

Look no further than Highway 42, No Definitions and Rock N Roll to hear that Capps cedes no quarter. It's just that this time his bark and his bite is older, wiser and more accepting of the unanswered questions mucking up the universe. Occasionally, even a celebratory mood can prevail like the horn-fueled romp Ol' Slac, an ode to the rebirth of the Mobile, Alabama Mardi Gras, or Coconut Moonshine, a character sketch based on Mr. Jim who inhabits the hallowed roadside barbecue joint in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Two rare but classic American roots numbers are born again here, as well: Taj Mahal's country-blues paen Annie's Lover and Richard Rabbit Brown's jaunty Jane's Alley Blues, (the original recording preserved on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music). In less metaphorical terms, Capps' real life situation has evolved and it's reflected in the album's spirit.

Capps co-produced The Lost Cause Minstrels with his longtime partner and revered engineer/producer 12:46:12 AM (Queens of the Stone Age, Dylan Leblanc, Sheryl Crow) and it results in a highly anticipated next chapter from one of the finest Southern troubadours in modern times.

Taylor Hollingsworth and Kate Taylor singing together is a match made in heaven. You might know Taylor from previous solo albums or bands but most likely from Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. He was the guitar player who also wrote and sang Snake Hill and Air Mattress on the album Outer South. If youve seen Maria Taylor play then you have most likely seen Kate in her band either playing keys, drums, or bass, and most importantly, harmonizing the soft beautiful background melodies. Nowadays, Kate and Taylor have joined forces in the band Dead Fingers.

In a time when guy-girl duos are becoming quite popular, this one is not just some gimmick, however perfect the timing and package may be. In fact, this Alabama duo are recently married and the two just recorded their first self titled full-length with Bruce Watson (RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough , AA Bondy), and it is being released on Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum Records.

While showing a wide range of styles, ranging from duet styled songs like those of John Prine and Iris DeMent, X, or Lee Hazelwood and Ann Margaret, to straight up great classic rock bands like the Stones, Beatles, or even Traveling Wilburys, this band should find a nice home with fans of more current duos like She and Him, Jenny and Johnny and Civil Wars.

    Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawd

Warrior horse-woman of myth or chimerical beast of the late 1970s funk? It is simply Centaura, available here for what amounts to the first time. For Atlanta hillbilly impresario BOB RILEY, the "spiral Series" of 12"s was part put-on, part hustle- but for Birmingham, Alabama's Centaura, that spiral-in logo appeared as a long-shot leg up. Their record's two-color, one-idea cover was mass-produced for Riley's envisioned run of potential releases though nothing but the enigmatic Centaura ever filled the jacket - and just barely.

Recorded in 1978, LAWDY, LAWDY, LAWD is a long-playing Golden Fleece of funk, disco, boogie, and deep post-Muscle Shoals balladry that would've surely failed to exist without Riley's extreme penny-pinching tactics in service of a failed marketing ploy so ludicrous, it kept the LP out of stores, relegated to extreme scarcity forever.

On SIDE ONE, Jesse Daniel and Cedrich Rutledge trade energized beats and freaks, before the synth-washed slowdown of "One Of A Kind'. SIDE TWO features Riley's two textbook funk cuts and album-ender "Just Don't Love You' -a mysterious tack-on of the Carbon Copies' Git Down Inc - issued 45, plus a heaving "Distant Lover" that sexes Marvin Gaye's original into softcore porn territory.

For born-and-bred Nashvillian Chris Denney, it all began at age 9---Stealing pills from his Grandma's medicine cabinet, smoking 2 packs a day and eventually graduating to marijuana by the age of 13. It wasn't until about 5 years ago that Denney started channeling his life experiences into vivid tales of what he knows best - Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. Denney and The Jets' debut LP, Mexican Coke was recorded and mixed in just 5 days in East Nashville on to 2" tape by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes "Boys and Girls") and Chris Denney with help from friends Clear Plastic Masks (Serpents and Snakes/Dine Alone) who backed Denney in the studio and co-produced.

    You Won't Believe It

Formed in the early '50s under the watchful eye of
Tuskegee, Alabama, transplant Charles Chambliss, the
Sensational Saints were handpicked from a Cleveland
clothing store, a pool room, and from a group of friends
singing from a third story window. After years spent
rotating members and issuing stray singles for assorted
    non-denominational imprints, the group connected
with the vocally inclined Reverend Melvin Kenniebrew at
the close of the '60s, making good on their "Sensational"
boast. "With God in their hearts and singing on their
minds," the Sensational Saints mounted their crown
jewel in 1973 with "You Won't Believe It" (Try It You'll
Like Us). Pressed in conservative quantities by local
gospel magnate James Bullard on his King James label,
the group's lone long-player perfectly encapsulates the
intersection of funk and gospel as only the religious
conversion of a Bill Wither's tune can do.

The Magik Sounds of The Pine Hill Haints

The Magik Sounds of the Pine Hill Haints ventures
softly into the cool, dark whisper of the haunted south. Short,
tight spun rhymes about silver quarters and vampires come
from a late evening session in a small pink house in south
Alabama, located next to an old Native American mound of
shells and bones, recorded at low volume with red eyes and
open windows. This is the 4th Halloween dance party long
player the Haints have cut for K.

Mrs Pac-Man sets the theme...although this record is
quicker and faster, Buddy Holly pop driven than most other
Haint efforts, the opening track places your mind in the
smokey state needed to feel the Magik Sound vibe. The sad
Queen of all truck stops and late night greasy spoons, the
lovely Angel Mrs Pac-man hold her charm over the listener
and keeps every loner in tune with midnight feeling.

I used to work a lot of third shift jobs, serving crummy food to
sweethearts, the day finished, done, another one in the
books, and the great burden of living in a modern nightmare
almost, almost felt like it had been lifted...the sweet early
a.m. twilight hours, where all humans are brothers again, all
hatreds and vices and ill wills are temporarily forgiven, folks
smile and tell a little joke or two, and the haunted Mrs Pac-man winks eternal in the background...

    Good Grief

From collaborating with the likes of Tweedy and David Byrne, to becoming such a part of the Newport Folk Festival family that they were asked to back up Roger Waters during this year's incredible headlining performance, the last two years have been the best in the Lucius' career. Now, the Brooklyn band is prepping to keep the good times going with the release of their latest LP, Good Grief.

Arriving via Mom + Pop Music, Good Grief was produced by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Weezer) and Bob Ezrin, along with the band themselves. The 11 tracks see the singer-songwriter duo of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig exploring the emotions of "loneliness, sadness and exhaustion alongside excitement, fulfillment and some of the most joyful moments in our lives" that they experienced while touring behind their last record. "Whenever one of us had an idea or a feeling," Wolfe said in a press release, "the other was already a witness to it and could help navigate through it - for the two of us, this usually came in song form."

    Something About Knowing

    A wonderfully warm presence." -NPR

Maria Taylor's Something About Knowing beckons with the opening track "Folk Song Melody," a
mesmerizing acoustic-with-celestial-atmospherics composition crafted around a wordless singsong
passage that's instantly familiar. "That section says everything without words and the rest of the record
fills in the emotions," she says. And the emotions brimming on the album are bliss and contentment.
On the title track, with a molasses flow, Maria names her blessings from the diurnal to the divine. Here
she sings: "I got you/I got me/I heard the sweetest voice call me mommy/got my old 5 string/I've got
everything." The music is balmy with a sweetly swaying groove, angelic backup vocals, gospel organs,
and a shooting star guitar melody. The stunning "Tunnel Vision" is expansive and chiming pop with a
    lose-yourself-on-the-dance-floor beat.

    Something About Knowing's
    spirit of "coming home with
    confidence" extends from
    Maria's personal and artistic
    peacefulness to the team she
    picked to surround herself
    with while making this album.
    She enlisted producer Mike
    Mogis, an essential creative
foil on her first two records.
    Her brother Macey Taylor
played bass on every song as
    well as keyboards and piano.
And her old high school music
    pal Brad Armstrong co-wrote,
    played on, and recorded two
tracks in his garage. "There we
were back in his garage, only
now we both had kids running
    around, it was really special,"
Maria says. Longtime friend and collaborator Andy LeMaster mixed these two songs. Additionally,
Maria recorded the track "This Is It" with Lester Nuby, and Daniel Farris-two trusted companions
she worked with on her last two records-at home in Birmingham, Alabama.

    Lies & Wishes

Edward David Anderson is an artist as ancient as he is modern. In a time when the music business desperately flails about, grasping at any new trend that will save its sinking ship, he exists far beyond its confines. Best known for his work with the revered Midwestern rock band Backyard Tire Fire who released a string of acclaimed albums in the previous decade, Anderson returns to the national stage with his highly anticipated solo debut, Lies & Wishes. Produced by Los Lobos' Steve Berlin, it finds Anderson creating his own mythology through a collection of songs that embrace vulnerability, while remaining grounded in his working class roots. Anderson sings, I'm the son of a plumber, from a God fearing mother. The lyric says much about where his story begins as an artist. He was born and raised just west of Chicago and lives a simple life, spending winters in an RV alongside the Gulf of Mexico in lower Alabama. Anderson's an American songwriter on an existential quest who seeks and who searches through song.

I feel like every experience, every mile, every interaction, every tune, sort of got me to where I am at this moment, Anderson recounts while shedding light on the over-arching theme that ties together the 10-track collection. The songs on the record are confessional by nature. They are songs about loss and love and living and hope. Halfway through my life, it's an honest look in the mirror.

Anderson's journey over the last five years and his response to the challenges he faced is what sets the lifers apart from those that concede the artistic pursuit. The dissolution of Backyard Tire in 2011 was the first obstacle to overcome. The band had built a devout cult following around the U.S., counting Cracker, Reverend Horton Heat and Clutch among their fans, all of whom took BTF on the road exposing them to a wider audience. It was around this time that Steve Berlin of Los Lobos was first drawn to Anderson's songwriting.

"Backyard Tire Fire opened a show for us and I remember being backstage and listening to their music and I was like, 'Wow, that song sounds really familiar. Whose cover is that? It's a classic tune,'" says Berlin. "It turns out that they were all Ed's originals. They just had that instantly memorable quality to them. So, I introduced myself at the show and we became buddies and then collaborators. Ed's music is so evocative, so well written. I honestly think he is as talented as anyone in the songwriting world and it is important that he be heard."

Anderson adds: I was just starting to get back on the road again after Tire Fire split, touring with my friend Johnny Hickman and I got inspired to get back in the studio. I had these songs and had something pretty interesting to say based on the experiences I just went through. I knew if I could get Steve Berlin involved, who is an old friend that I've worked with in the past, it could be something special."

It was just prior to this that Anderson's mother passed away, while the previous winter his wife lost her mother, both to extended illnesses. It was a defining moment for the 40-year old artist and culminated in a torrent of songwriting. Indeed, songs like Lies & Wishes Lost & Found and Chain Reaction delve deep into the human condition, asking difficult questions of both himself and his loved ones.

"A lot of the subject matter on this record came from reflecting on these painful experiences" says Anderson. After losing my mom, I decided I've got to make a record and dedicate it to her and make a statement here on my own.

Musically speaking, the core of Lies & Wishes is built around refined melodies, acoustic guitars and sparse arrangements, yet Berlin's production colors the tracks with squalls of electric guitar, affected vocals, drum loops and assorted analog keyboard flourishes. It should also be noted that fans of Anderson's vintage rock and roll songwriting from his Backyard Tire Fire days will find plenty to love on tunes like "Nothing Lasts Forever," "Taking It Out On You" and "The Next Melody," which deliver the big hooks and classic refrains on which he so effortlessly hangs his hat.

This is where we find Edward David Anderson today. His heart's on his sleeve and it's that of an artist. Nobody ever said it was going to be easy, but as the songs on Lies & Wishes bare out, when the muse calls, he will be there to answer.

I needed to make this album, he concludes. I feel like it's undoubtedly my finest work to date, the beginning of the next chapter for me.

    Boys And Girls

Alabama Shakes' debut release Boys & Girls marks the arrival of a major new rock 'n' roll band. Due out on ATO Records, the album was recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN and was produced and mixed by the band. Boys & Girls is a vibrant fusion of swampy, dirty Southern rock, blues and soul delivered with punk rock fervor. From the heartrending title song to such stompers as Rise to the Sun, the album demonstrates the sense of groove and space the band learned from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply can't be learned.

Originally released in 1976, Night Moves was Bob Seger's first studio album with the Silver Bullet Band. Much of the album was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with the incomparable Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. This
breakthrough album, powerful and personal, went on to garner overwhelming critical praise, as well as the hit
singles "Night Moves," "Mainstreet" and "Rock and Roll Never Forgets." This new reissue of our GRAMMY® Award winning rocker's classic album marks its debut on 180g vinyl.

    Second Helping

Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote the book on Southern rock with their first album, so it only made sense that they followed it for their second album, aptly titled Second Helping. Released in 1974, the group turned out a record that replicated all the strengths of the original, but was a little tighter and a little more professional. This album featured the bands biggest hit single, Sweet Home Alabama and reached #12 on the Billboard album charts.

    Sound & Color

    2xLP On Clear Vinyl

    Live From Alabama

In August of 2012, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit assembled in their home state of Alabama in front of a couple of sold-out concert halls to record their first live album, Live From Alabama. After years of hard touring, the critically-lauded band has gelled into a versatile rock and roll squad that is equally at ease performing Muscle Shoals soul to hardcore country to balls-out rock. Live From Alabama's tracklist mines some of Isbell's most popular songs and includes a pair of inspired covers in Neil Young's Like a Hurricane and Candi Staton's Heart on a String.

Special Reissue of This Long Out Of Print Live Album From 2000

A live recording featuring a great collection of punk-based country rock. This is some stomping, driving music, with an urgency not heard in most alt-country. Patterson Hood's raspy vox perfectly fit the music, and the warm guitar sound dominates. Since this is a live album, the songs incorporate some extended bluesy jams. The performance is staggering enough to elicit the drunken shouts for More! at the end of the album.

The punk roots of the band are evident, most explicitly in the Jim Carroll cover on track 11. Steve McQueen is a rousing tribute to a childhood hero, which segues into Gimme Three Steps and back again. The Avon Lady is an improvised tale of a neighbor who's a tad overzealous in the pushing of make-up products. Margo & Harold, a song about how people grow weirder with each passing year, also does the service of explaining the title. The most powerful track on the disc is The Living Bubba, a plaintive cry from a musician dying of AIDS, needing just a little more time to live as he's got another show.

The drunken pyschobilly is what gives the compositions their energy and momentum, but it is songs like this one which gives the album its power. Great stuff.

    La Peste

Alabama 3's second album shows off their trademark uplifting quality, albeit in a "Screamadelica"-style fusion of euphoria and melancholy. Songs like SAD EYED LADY OF THE LOWLIFE and recent single TOO SICK TO PRAY have a gospel-like hugeness about them, while WADE INTO THE WATER and MANSION ON THE HILL twang with countrified swagger.

The album runs the gamut of emotions in the face of adversity: from the incandescent beauty of the shimmering WALKING IN MY SLEEP and the closing SINKING " to the claustrophobic beats of COCAINE (KILLED MY COMMUNITY) and the energy rush of STRANGE, adding a sense of dope-fuelled urban paranoia.Of particular note are a twisted beat-heavy cover of the Eagles' HOTEL CALIFORNIA, throwing a totally new slant on the song as the last cocaine-addled stop on the country musician's road to oblivion, and THE THRILLS HAVE GONE, whose spoken word contribution from Birmingham 6 survivor Paddy Hill brings into focus exactly what the band mean when they talk about injustice.
LA PESTE (THE PLAGUE) may well be HIV, computer viruses or simply a global decline in justice and morality, but Alabama 3 are imploring us to come together and get loaded anyway. After all, we all have to die sometime. -PHASE9.tv

    I'll Find A Way

Features Special Guests: Casey Dienel of White Hinterland, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Patty Grifn, Sam Amidon, And Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond

Produced by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Kathleen Edwards), I'll Find a Way is a unique collaboration between one of popular music's longest-running acts and one of its fastest-rising stars. Known primarily for his work in the indie and folk realms, the Bon Iver frontman proved a perfect fit to work with the Blind Boys, exhibiting a deep knowledge and
appreciation of gospel music. Vernon, and old friend and band mate Phil Cook (Megafaun, The Shouting Matches) corralled a lively backing band for the album and hand-picked a range of songs for the Blind Boys to sing. I'll Find a Way features some of the Blind Boys' most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys
fans - Sam Amidon, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Casey Dienel of White Hinterland, Patty Grifn and Justin Vernon himself. The result is a rousing collection of gospel songs, new and old, that address life's most desperate hours but also savor the triumphs and reassurances of faith.

I'll Find a Way represents a strong new chapter for the Blind Boys of Alabama, whose career stretches back more than seventy years. Formed in the late 1930s at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in Talladega, the group has harmonized throughout
the turbulent twentieth century and well into the twenty-rst: from Jim Crow through Civil Rights and into the Obama era. They have, however, enjoyed some of their biggest and most rousing successes in the last ten years, during which they've won ve Grammys, four Gospel Music Awards and multiple invitations to sing at the White House.

For I'll Find a Way, their ninth studio album of the twenty-rst century, the Blind Boys of Alabama - which includes Jimmy Carter, Eric "Ricky" McKinnie, Joey Williams, Tracy Pierce, Ben Moore and newest addition Paul Beasley - decamped to the wintry wild of rural Wisconsin to record at Vernon's April Base studio. Known primarily for his work in the indie and folk realms, the Bon Iver frontman proved a perfect t to work with the Blind Boys, exhibiting a deep knowledge and appreciation of gospel
    music.

"It's not just singing," explains the 82-year-old Carter. "We're bringing the message to the people, and that message is the good news of God. We sing from the heart, and what comes from the heart reaches the heart. If you have any feeling in you,
you will feel the Blind Boys."
