The Dance Of Reality: Original Soundtrack
LP Album Jacket Includes a Number of Production Stills from the Film
Mastered by Joe Yannece
Lacquer Cutting on LP by Carl Rowatti at Trutone Mastering
The release in 2014 of The Dance of Reality marked the
triumphant return, after a 23-year hiatus, of Alejandro
Jodorowsky, the visionary Chilean filmmaker behind cult
classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain. In the radiantly
visceral autobiographical film, a young Jodorowsky (played by
his son, Brontis) is confronted by a collection of compelling
characters that contribute to his burgeoning surreal
consciousness. Adding to the autobiographical nature of the
work, the film was shot in Tocopilla, a coastal town on the
edge of the Chilean desert, where the filmmaker was born in
1929. Blending his personal history with metaphor,
mythology, and poetry, The Dance of Reality reflects Jodorowsky's
philosophy that reality is not objective but rather a "dance" created by our own imaginations.
Jodorowsky's films have always placed a special emphasis on music-his soundtracks rank as among
the most daring and fascinating in film history-and for The Dance of Reality, Jodorowsky tapped his own
son Adan Jodorowsky (a.k.a. "Adanowsky"), whose work as a composer and performer (with Devendra
Banhart among others) has won him an international following in his own right. Adanowsky's score is
alternately lush and comical, blending brooding string passages with hypnotically repeating piano figures
that create a mood that is at times foreboding, at times wistful and, as is always the case with a score to
a Jodorowsky film, surreal.
As part of its continuing association with ABKCO Music & Records, Inc., Real Gone Music is proud to
present the complete soundtrack to The Dance of Reality on LP, mastered by Joe Yannece and
with lacquer cutting by Carl Rowatti at Trutone Mastering. The album jacket includes a number of production stills from the film. Alejandro Jodorowsky's tradition of
remarkable film soundtracks lives on with The Dance of Reality.1. Ice-Cream

Casa de Trova - Cuba 50's (Pure Pleasure)
La Casa de Trova. The house of the troubadours. It's a place of almost mythical status in Cuban music, the home of so many of the glorious songs that have come out of the island. Even Paul McCartney has made his pilgrimage there. For Alejandro Almenares, it's a place he visits every single day, still carrying his guitar as he goes to play and talk with friends. And it's the inspiration behind his album Casa De Trova (Tumi Records: release: February 25, 2014).
For Almenares, the connection to the house is deep. His musician father, Angel Sanchez Almenares, was one of the founders of the Casa.
»I was there when it all began, too,« he recalls. »I grew up listening to them playing there, the trovas and soneros. I'm 76 now. I'm the last of the founders still alive.«
It's a house filled with memories of all the tunes that have filled the air over the years - and still do. As a child, Almenares took them all in as naturally as breathing. When he was 10 years old he began attending music school staying until he was 14, »when I had to quit in order to work and help my parents.«
Two years later he was a professional musician, playing the music his father had written and performed in groups like Los Taínos, Trio Oriente and Las Guitarras Internacionales. A lifetime of music, and, he adds with a smile, »so many bands that the number and names escape me now.«
If you're a fan of the Buena Vista Social Club, this guy's gonna make them seem like a bunch of posers. Composer, vocalist and tres guitarist, Alejandro Almenares delivers the real thing from Cuba here on this set. This double vinyl set contains the same songs (although in different order); the difference is that the first features his rich and full voice, while the second features his material as (mostly) instrumentals. Flutes, percussion, violin, soprano sax, guitars and intermittent vocal choruses accompany Almenares on the gentle and fragrant instrumental takes of "No Critiques Al Nene" and "La Nina Que Yo Ame", while vocalists Tony Rodon, Eva Grinan, Jose Cabrera and Ismael Borges deliver tales of passion on "Mujercita "Linda", A Tu Retrato", "Te Vi Y Te Contemple" and "De Lo Que Quiero Saber" respectively. The simplicity of the old world charms are on abundant display here. No gimmicks, no frills, just earnest notes and, like the best of cooks, letting the simple ingredients do all the work in creating the flavor that makes your mouth water. Essential listening!
About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.LP1 - Vocals

The successor to 2008's Oracular Spectacular and 2010's Congratulations, MGMT's self titled third album finds Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continuing to push themselves to expand the boundaries of modern pop music.
Returning to Tarbox Road Studios to work with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Co-producer and mixer of Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of "Introspection" by 1960's psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo's encompassing surrealist view of the everyday.1. White MountainHaving played in various bands including Swords of Chaos and in Jónsi's touring band, White Mountain is Úlfur Hansson's debut under his own name. With influences ranging from cult cinema, esoteric literature and contemporary music, Úlfur presents a unique twist on the supernatural. In his own words:
Every track is a collage of field-recordings made while travelling. I met so many interesting people on the road (for instance, Alexandra of Mountain Man who did amazing vocals for So Very Strange) and I always carry my tape recorder with me like a camera. Some tracks are composed of beats made from my cousin throwing rocks into a pond out in the sticks in Iceland, converging with some birds I met in Chigaco. It makes this album extremely personal to me, remembering things like that and helps me achieve greater depth with the programming aspect of it. I guess i'm searching for a more
living breathing sound for completely electronic music.
The title is an homage to Rene Daumal's Mount Analogue, as well as Alejandro Jodorowski's film Holy Mountain, but also something else Each individual sound has a very special memory attached to it, so the album creates these nostalgic nonexistent spaces, hidden places - an amalgamation of instances, situations that couldn't possibly exist. I imagine this White Mountain, an invisible imaginary place - a sacred place on the horizon. Maybe like a connection to the the universe above. An analogy of the journey of Man.1. Evoke Ewok

Limited Edition Of 3000 On Pearlescent Colored Vinyl
Following the success of 2014's Birdman (Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director), director Alejandro G. Iñárritu pushes the limits of film making with the survival epic The Revenant. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises) and shot in the frozen Canadian wilderness with only natural lighting, The Revenant is a story of loss, revenge and resilience in the face of impossible odds against the furies of man and nature itself. The film is heavily favored to be a critical darling as awards season gets under way. Director Iñárritu has chosen to forgo almost all dialogue in favor of a gorgeous soundscape and a sweeping score. A film of this magnitude deserves a composer who understands creative artistry and unbridled passion. Japanese master and Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor) fits the bill perfectly. Along with fellow Yellow Magic Orchestra member and frequent collaborator Alva Noto, Sakamoto has created a gripping soundtrack that is sure to be a treat for the winter crowds. Bryce Dessner (writer for Kronos Quartet and the LA Phil) also supplies additional music.

Shrink DustCalgary, Alberta's Chad VanGaalen's blood flows by unrestrained creative
impulses. He has never worked in a commercial recording studio. By
his hands alone, one line, sound, shape or word leads organically to the
next. Over the last ten to fifteen years, Chad has been producing living
maps in songs, drawings, modified instruments, animations and
performances--shifting forms pointing to another world, infinitely more
liveable, maybe hidden just under the surface of our own
In Shrink Dust, Chad's fifth full-length album under his own name, we
have a new window into his world. The album is, in Chad's view, a country
record. It is also partially a score to Chad's soon-to-be released, animated,
sci-fi feature, Translated Log of Inhabitants ("It's like Bob and Doug
McKenzie in space," says Chad).
Always a fan of esoteric instruments, Chad taught himself to play an
aluminum pedal steel guitar. His experiments with this instrument unify
the album, along with themes of death, transformation, fear, benign evil,
and the eccentricity of love. A newfound affection for The Flying Burrito
Brothers, and the sci-fi mysticism of the 1980s graphic novel The Incal
by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius, also drove the album.
Somehow, with all of its disparate influences and components, Shrink
Dust might be one of the most accessible moments in CVG's creative
life, simply because it is more apparent than ever how much fun he is
having blurring the lines between the vivid worlds of his creation, and
the world his audience inhabits. For those who are open to it, Chad's
adventures in music and art illuminate a path that is more colorful,
playful, and sustainable than those commonly available to us. A path
that is, most importantly, always changeable.1. Cut Off My Hands

I Love You, HoneybearI Love You, Honeybear was recorded intermittently from 2013 to 2014 in Echo Park, Los Angeles and produced with Jonathan Wilson, whom I also recorded and produced 2012's Fairly Fun with. There's a case to be made that it sounds and acts a bit like solo-era John Lennon, Scott Walker, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, and Dory Previn, while taking more than a few cues from Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Muhammad Ali. Blammo.
It has a decidedly more soulful presence than Fear Fun, due in no small part to the fact that I am truly singing my ass off all over this motherfucker. The album is really characterized by the scope and ambition of the arrangements. Nearly every tune is augmented by something special, be it orchestral strings, a mariachi band, questionable electronic drum solos, ragtime jazz combos, soul singers, or what have you. I'm pretty sure there's a sitar in there somewhere. Blammo. My ambition, aside from making an indulgent, soulful, and epic sound worthy of the subject matter, was to address the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love,
the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons in my own voice. Blammo.
This material demanded a new way of being made, and it took a lot of time before the process revealed itself. The massive, deranged shmaltz I heard in my head, and knew had to be the sound of this record, originated a few years ago while Emma and I were hallucinating in Joshua Tree; the same week I wrote the title track. I chased that sound for the entire year and half we were recording. The means by which it was achieved bore a striking resemblance to the travails, abandon and transformation of loving someone. There: I said it. Blammo.

New York Before The WarJesse Malin returns in the New Year with a brand new album: New York Before The War, preceded by a single, Addicted.
Arriving almost five years on from his last record (2010's Love It to Life), Jesse's artistic ambitions for New York Before the War, were high: he knew he had to make it count. "I wanted to make a record that encompassed everything I've done, since I started with my hardcore band, Heart Attack, when I was twelve or or thirteen through bands like D Generation and then my solo career, but I also wanted to challenge the listeners who have been with me - and challenge myself."
Pared down from close to forty songs, New York Before the War album more than matches that ambition: A soundtrack to a life lived with meaning. "This is an era when music is so disposable," Malin worries. "People talk about the death of the album and even the death of rock & roll. But this is not just a shuffle of songs. There is a cinematic thread, a story."
Sessions for the album began in Virginia, Nashville before moving on to New York, finishing up at the Magic Shop in Soho. Players include such downtown New York all-stars as guitarist Derek Cruz, bassist Catherine Popper and drummer Randy Schrager. Don Dilego produced early sessions for the album in Virginia, and Malin and Cruz co-produced in New York. Brian Thorn, who worked on David Bowie's The Next Day, engineered and mixed the album.
Opening with The Dreamers, a haunting ballad that evokes both the alienation and the sense of deep connection that travel can bring (and very nearly became the album's title track), the album moves on through darker meditations like She's So Dangerous and Bar Life. Elsewhere, taut, upbeat rockers like Freeway (which features a blistering solo by the MC5's Wayne Kramer) and Turn Up the Mains (with Alejandro Escovedo on backing vocals) dictate the pace and Peter Buck contributes a vintage R.E.M.-style guitar part to I Would Do It For You, a tale of personal loyalty filled with longing and an aching sense of conviction.1. You and the Night Soundtrack
"This score is really for lovers and ghosts." -Anthony Gonzalez
M83 is excited to announce their latest collaboration: the soundtrack to Yann Gonzalez's first feature film, You And The Night. Anthony warns that You And The Night is not a typical M83 release. "People who only like "Midnight City" are going to be disappointed. Mellow and romantic, this soundtrack pays tribute to French soundtracks from the 70s and is much more intimate than Hurry Up, We're Dreaming and the Oblivion Soundtrack. This score is really for lovers and ghosts."
Growing up together in Antibes, France, Anthony and his brother Yann were both inspired from an early age by European filmmakers such as Luis Bunuel, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Similar themes underline each of their individual artistic expressions, via both film and music: an appreciation for the majesty of hope and an overall embrace of humanity. Describing his career up until now, Yann explains "if all of my films are put together they form a kind of ensemble, a sort of community. And that is precisely what You And The Night is about: an emotional community, the utopia of a community." For the Gonzalez brothers community and family allowed them to grow into their roles as filmmakers and musicians, so when the time came to chose someone to create a soundtrack for his first feature film it was obvious that Yann would look to work with his brother. "Music is an organic part of the films I make." "M83's compositions bring together the most diverse kinds of music that can only communicate in the end through the logic of emotion and the faith you place in them."
For Anthony You And The Night is a film about love, loss, new love and melancholia. He comments "The movie is very emotional and it's the movie of my brother, so it was a very important project for me. Yet as we share the same values, have the same artistic influences, it was also a very natural and uncomplicated process."
In creating this sultry and luminous soundtrack Anthony reunited with several of his previous collaborators. Joe Trapanese (Oblivion, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming) returned to assist with the orchestral arrangements, whilst long-term M83 collaborator Morgan Kibby (M83, White Sea) and Susanne Sundfør (Oblivion) performed vocals on several tracks on the album. Evolving from their time working together on Oblivion's title track, it seemed a natural step for Sundfør to become involved in the recording sessions for You And The Night. Susanne comments "It was very inspiring to see how Anthony works and how his perfectionism and high ambitions brought out the best in everyone around him. It's something I'm grateful to have been a part of, and I think the soundtrack ended up sounding beautiful and mystical, just like the movie."
Once again You And The Night highlights the musical richness of M83 and adds an impressive chapter to the growing repertoire of work that Gonzalez has produced since his initial, self-titled release. M83, in 2001, right through to the 2011 Grammy Nominated release Nominated Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, which included the platinum selling hit-single "Midnight City".

Signs & SignifiersNamed as an artist you should know in 2011 by NPR, singer/songwriter JD McPherson makes his Rounder Records debut with the release of Signs & Signifiers which All Music calls a rockin', bluesy, forward-thinking album that subtly breaks the conventions of most vintage rock projects. McPherson is an artist with an unaffected take on vital American music and a voice that channels the spirit of Little Richard and James Brown.
The seductively kickass 12-song set finds this renaissance man/hepcat seamlessly meshing the old and the new, the primal and the sophisticated, on a work that will satisfy traditional American rock 'n' roll and R&B purists while also exhibiting McPherson's rarified gift for mixing and matching disparate stylistic shapes and textures. Recorded on analog equipment through vintage microphones and a 1960s Berlant 1/4 inch tape machine, Signs & Signifiers marks the arrival of an authentic, gutsy American artist.
Featuring JD McPherson (lead and backing vocals, guitar), Jimmy Sutton (bass), and Alex Hall (drums, piano, organ), the album also hosts an array of guest musicians, including Scott Ligon on piano (NRBQ's Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet); Jonathan Doyle (Nick Curran & the Lowlifes, White Ghost Shivers); Chicago's Josh Bell (The Del Moroccos) on tenor and baritone saxophones; Susan Voelz (Alejandro Escovedo, Poi Dog Pondering) on violin; Allison Chesley (Helen Money) on cello; and Joel Paterson (The Modern Sounds) lends choice guitar work to the Joey Simone classic Your Love (All That I'm Missing).1.
